Meditationes de prima Philosophia, in quibus Dei existentia, & animæ humanæ à corpore distinctio, demonstrantur Cum Responsionibus Authoris Secunda editio septimis objectionibus antehac non visis aucta (Meditations on First Philosophy, in which the existence of God and the distinction between the human spirit and the body are demonstrated), [two works in one volume - as issued]

Ludovicus Elzevirium, Amsterdam 1642 - 2 blank leaves + TP + verso of TP = Errata + [i]-[xi] = Epistola + [xii]-[xviii] = Præfatio ad Lectorem + 1-496 [bound with] Objectiones Septimæ in Meditationes de Prima Philosophia cum notis Authoris, Amsterdam: Ludovicus Elzevirium. 1642. TP + 3-212 + 4 blank leaved. 12 mo. The first edition of Descartes' Meditations was published in Paris in 1641 - presenting the most detailed explanation of his metaphysical system. The six meditations follow Descartes as he categorically doubts everything he knows and then tries to discover a method whereby he can establish what, if anything, can be known with certainty. This book - along with the earlier presentation (Discours, 1637) of roughly the same ideas - was the foundational moment in Modern Philosophy and a seismic event in the history of Western ideas. That first edition also contained the famous objections that Descartes had received from six commentators who had been sent the text of this work before it was published. Objections came from the Dutch theologian Johannes Caterus, various "theologians and philosophers" gathered by Descartes' friend and principal correspondent, Friar Marin Mersenne, the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes, the theologian and logician Antoine Arnauld along with the philosopher, Pierre Gassendi. This second edition - issued a year later - included an additional 'Seventh Set of Objections' that had been sent to Descartes by the Jesuit, Pierre Bourdin - primarily attacking his method of doubt. Descartes presents these objections and responds to them (rather scathingly) in the first 138 pages of this second volume while the following 74 pages is taken up with a letter addressed to the Jesuit, Father Dinet - revisiting and rebutting the accusations that had formerly been made against Descartes by his virulent Dutch enemy, the Calvinist theologian, Gisbertus Voetius. The Meditations are still an enjoyable and easy read and their accessibility added greatly to the impact which they had upon the 17th century - which can accurately be compared to the explosion of a nuclear device. After the Discourse and the Meditations, nothing was ever the same again in Western philosophy, psychology or science. Bound in 19th century vellum over boards with black double-line borders on sides, spine in six compartments. There are also black borders and black lettering in the second compartment and the imprint in the sixth. Gilt edges with inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, small collection stamp on front end paper and coloured bookplate of the Bibliotheque de Mr Jules du Moulin on the inside of the rear board. Contemporary owner's signature on title page. Slightly rubbed and soiled, but, overall, a lovely copy. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. ""Elzevir (or Elsevier): a famous Dutch family of booksellers, printers and publishers, active from about 1585 to 1712. ... Printing at Leyden was begun in 1618 by Isaac (1596-1651), grandson of Louis, but it was Bonaventurea (1583-1652)and his nephew Abraham (1592-1652) who expanded the family business, initiating in 1629 their famed pocket editions of Latin classics and French literature, a series which continued until 1665. The aim was to ensure a wide circulation of accurate texts for every day use. The books were given engraved title-pages, narrow margins and solid setting... An influencing factor in the original decision to published in such small format may have been the cessation of paper imports from France, due to war, at a time when there were few Dutch paper mills. The distinctive type face used in these books, cut by Christoffel van Dijck, has a great influence, and deprivations of both face and format were revived in France during the 19th century..."" Fuller, Thomas
The Holy State. [Inculding: the Profane State]
|
London:: Roger Daniel for John Williams, 1642. Small folio. A-P4, Q6, R-3G4, 3H6, 3I-3K4 [-3K4, balnk] [8], 122, 119-436, 436-441p. Contemp. panelled morocco, rebacked, title on red leather label, old owner's name and stamp on endpapers "William Pye, 1730, " signature of "Johnathan Mann, 1729, " in margins, calligraphic owner'sname on t.p. "? Pagani? "; minor dampstains, stains, soiling, penciled notes; port. of Joan of Naples mounted on old paper. Extra engraved t.p. by William Marshall, royal arms by William Marshall, Cambridge arms on t.p., head-and tail-pieces, decorated initials, 17 ports. in text, 2 ports. inserted all by William Marshall. First Edition. Thomas Fuller (1608-61), historian and Anglican clergyman, was noted for his staunch position against the innovations of the Presbyterians of his day. He was well known as an able preacher but was hesitant to committ to the patronage of one individual, and so spent his life travelling about England and collecting information for his various histories. "his actions and writings show that he was a person of firm political and religious convictions who took considerable risks to support the institutions he most cherished: a balanced constitution of monarch and parliament and a tolerant established church under episcopal leadership. His major historical writings were erudite, original in scope, and written with verve in a style distinctively his own....One of Fuller's most important and popular literary works, The Holy State, was published in London in May or June 1642. It was a rich collection of characters illustrating professions and states of life, along with short biographies of historical figures. " [Illustrated DNB on-line] There are biograhies of Paracelsus, Sir Francis Drake, Queen Elizabeth, and Joan of Arc among many others. It might seem curious at first to us, but Joan of Arc is given as the prototype of the evil witch, but not so curious if we remember that it was the English who burnt her at the stake. Wing F2443. |
Daventriae (=Deventer), N.Cost, 1642.. Two works in one volume. 8vo. Contemporary vellum; overlapping boards; goldstamped title lable on spine; traces of ms. title on spine. Woodcut printer's device on title; woodcut endpiece on last page. (8), 189 pp. HORNIUS, Georgius. De originibus Americanis. Libri quatuor. (No place), Adrianus Vlacq, 1652. Two works in 1 volume. 8vo. Title in black and red; woodcut printer's device on title; some woodcut headpieces. (9), (11), 282 pp.. Ad 1: Rare, first and one of the most famous works by Nicolaas Blesdijk (1520-?) son-in-law and dedicated follower of David Joris of Delft. Although this work was first published in 1642, parts of it had already been written in 1559 or 1560. This "Historia vitae" was part of a more extensive work about the history of the baptists. When the work was finally published almost a hundred years later, it served as an important source for the description of the life of David Joris and of his doctrine throughout the 17th and 19th century. Jacob Revius, the famous Dutch scholar and writer, found this manuscript and "just" edited it, without any adaptation of the text. By doing this he preserved an important document of being lost forever. Ad 2: First edition of work by Gregorius Horn (1627-1670), a very productive and well-known writer of the 17th century. Most of his works are of historical or geographical nature. Because of his extensive oeuvre he was often accused of writing without properly consulting other works about the same subjects. He was very famous and wanted for his knowledge and was asked for several chairs. By the and of his life he became more and more under the influence of supersticion and he was then an easy victim of proposters, who took all his money. Beautiful copy.

He was a schoolmaster in Speyer, but also worked in the archives of the city, thus acquiring a solid knowledge of legal affairs.

Obra rara, desconocida a Nicolás Antonio. Procedencia: 1. Livraria Fernin Liboa, etiqueta en guarda. 2. Bernardino Ribeiro de Carvalho, supra-libris.Referencias: Palau 218680; Salvá 860; Maggs, Spanish Books 1927, 736; Monteverde 4049; Fernando Palha, 1123
