Nürnberg, W. Endter 1642 - Kl.-4to. 1 Bl., 58 S. Neuer Ppbd (etwas braunfleckig). John Vaux
A New Almanacke and Prognostication for the Yeare of Our Lord God 1642. Being the Second from the Leape-Yeare. Calculated for the Meridian of the Ancient City of Durham. Composed By John Vaux of St Hellen Awckland - Almanac - Almanack -
|
John Dawson, London 1642 - [39] A rare mid-seventeenth century Almanac by the John Vaux - only one other copy of this almanac is recorded which is in the Bodleian library in Oxford. Vaux who was a Northumbrian clergyman produced a series of almanacs 'calculated' for the 'Meridian of the ancient City of Durham' and was apparently suspended from his position at St Helen's in Auckland and imprisoned for selling the books at his altar table. This almanac is printed in red and black and is partly interleaved with blank sheets that have been used as a writing book by its first owner for notes and jottings. Thus the blank sheet opposite 'September' has manuscript records of two dozen debts to the book's owner, including: 'This for a pigge - 0 - 1 - 4' and 'This more money at Candlemas - 0 - 1 - 0'. Elsewhere the owner of the book has written names - presumably of friends and family - beside the birthday dates in the almanac. The printed text falls into two sections. The first section which lasts for eight leaves includes the 'Computation of Time' and days of the year and begins with a small, elegant, woodcut 'Anatomie of Man's Body'. A new title page opens the second section which casts a 'Prognostication for the yeare of your Lord God 1642'. The text is remarkably clean and fresh with only minor discolouration to the last blank page. There are no page numbers or signatures but the book is duodecimo sized. It is bound in modern dark paper wrappers and housed in an atractive custom-made tree calf book-box with gilt decorations. ESTC R34338. Amsterdam, Crispijn de Passe, 1642.. Large folio. Loose lvs. in half vellum cover, sides covered with marbled paper. The lvs. have been provisionally bound together: traces of binding in the left margins. Together 31 large engraved architectural plates of classical columns, wooden furniture, ornaments, fountains, doorways, designs of Dutch houses of ca. 300 x 200 mm. by Crispijn II de Passe and Paulus van Vianen; added are 2 smaller plates of ornamented fire-places (ca. 220 x 150 mm.).. This work apparently was also sold as the third part of a larger work consisting of three parts, evidently printed at the same time (the parts could also be sold separately):- Part 1: Jacob Barozzio de Vignola, Regola de'cinque ordini d'architettura ... Con la nuova aggionta di Michel-Angelo Buonaroti (together with title in Dutch, French and German; Amsterdam, (Crispijn de Passe) for Jan Jansz. & Jan van Hilten, 1642). Here not present.- Part 2: La ii parte dell architettura dell Vignola e'altri famossi architetti ... (14 plates present, see below).- Part 3: our Oficina arcularia . From Part 3 which originally contains 19 (or 20) large engraved plates, we have here 17 plates of this second very enlarged edition of this series of architectonical plates by Crispijn II de Passe. The first edition of this series, consisting of only 14 plates (numbered A (title), and A-N) of expensive and fashionable pieces of furniture of French and Dutch design, was published by Crispijn I de Passe in Utrecht in 1621 (see reproduction of the title in Veldman, fig. 139). The title of this series Oficina arcularia (The cabinetmaker's shop ...), with the translation of the title in French, German and Dutch, shows that the publisher was aiming at an international market. The plates also demonstrate that Crispijn II not only had a thorough knowledge of the latest developments in furniture-making and styles of ornament, but also that he was well acquainted with the work of his predecessor Hans Vredeman de Vries's Differents pourtraicts de menuiserie which was published by Philips Galle in Antwerp around 1583, containing 16 plates with furniture designs which are very similar to Crispijn's plates (see Hollstein XLVIII, part 2, 491-507).In the present enlarged second 1642-edition there are 6 more plates, while one of the first edition is missing (A third edition appeared in 1651):- A: Title within an asymmetrical Corinthian frame (see Veldman, fig. 139).- A[bis] - B: 2 plates with measured elevations and details of the five orders.- C: decoration for furniture (mantelpieces?).- D: a half symmetry view of designs for an ornate bed.- E-I, L-M: 7 plates with further furniture designs, often half-symmetry. Plate G is called 'G2'. As the BAL copy has only plate 'G1', this is possibly an unrecorded variant (altered for the third edition of 1651?). Plate K is lacking.- N: six chairs and three tables.- O: a half of a pulpit, attributed to Hendrick de Keyser. The 'O'-plate was probably added for the 1651 edition and was originally plate XXIII in section 1 of part 2 (see below). Plate P is lacking.- Q: three grotesque cartouches ('O' in the BAL copy!)- R: swags and grotesque masks.- S: six herms and other supporters.(T: there is no plate T in this copy, but it is suggested that most copies don't have that plate at all). The present collection of plates includes also the following 14 large engraved and etched plates from part 2 (containing a total of 83 plates, divided in 2 sections: (1) plates I-XXVI and (2) 5 series of resp. 6, 6, 10, 6 and 29 plates). Here are present all the plates designed by Dutch architects ; they are engraved by Crispijn II de Passe (and 2 by Paulus van Vianen):- from section 1 : all the 4 plates ( 3 plates ; plate XXIII: a half of a pulpit, attributed to Hendrick de Keyser, transferred as plate 'O' to part 3 (see above)) of designs by Dutch architects and artists (the other 22 plates are by Italian architects): - plate XXIIII: a font or fountain signed 'M.M. Keyser inventor'. - plate XXIIIII (partly erased): a fountain signed 'Paulus van Vianen inven:'. - plate XXVI (partly erased): a fountain signed 'Paulus van Vianen delin: F.'. Plates XXIIIII-XXVI are etched by the famous silversmith Paulus van Vianen and are probably published here for the first time .- from section 2 : - the complete second series of 6 plates , numbered I-VI: six elevations of Dutch houses. Plates II-IV are signed as drawn by P. (Philips or Pieter) and Pieter Vingboons. Plates I and V may not be by Vingboons, and were not among the designs published in his Afbeelsels der voornaemste gebouwen , which included re-engraved versions of plates II-IV and VI. - plates II-VI of the 4th series, consisting of 5 plates : five elevations and plans for doorways and porticos. Plate II has the title: " Porta del inventione de Joan de Santen Archite (sic) Romano. Poort naer de inventie van Joan van Santen Architeckt tot Roomen" .So this additional collection of 14 beautiful large architectural plates are all the plates designed by Dutch architects and engraved by Crispijn II de Passe (and 2 by Paulus van Vianen) from the second part of the 1642 edition of the famous Regola delli cinque ordini d'architectura by Vignola. Added are 2 smaller engraved plates of ornamented fire-places, numbered 18 and 21, from an unidentified edition. The plates are in fair condition all with a small blue stamp (with the monogram 'AA'?).- (Fronthinge weak; some staining and tears (repaired), some margins strengthened or repaired, 4 plates without margins mounted on fitting leaves). Ilja Veldman, Crispijn de Passe and his progeny (2001), p. 263, 337 and figs. 139 and 140; Hollstein XVI, 174; Jervis, Printed furniture designs (1974), p. 41 and figs. 291-308; BAL 3452 (s.v. King Charles I
His Maiesties Declaration to all His Loving Subjects Upon Occasion of a Late Printed Paper Entitled, A Declaration and Protestation of the Lords and Commons in Parliament of theis Kingdome and the whole world of the 22nd October
|
Leonard Lichfield Printer to the University, Oxford 1642 - Bound in three quarter black leather over marbled boards with gilt titles on spine, corners and spine ends rubbed, upper joint just starting from top edge, teg. The pamphlet itself is in very good condition, there is a little wear to the title page which looks as if it may once have been folded, the contents are clean and bright although the quality of the printing could be better. This pamphlet is the kings reply to a pamphlet issued by Parliament on the eve of the Battle of Edgehill (see item 4785). In it he claims to have done all he could to ensure peace and that it is Parliament who had rejected his offers of a treaty. He also rejects claims of favouring papists - here the dispute probably lies in the different interpretations that the King and those in Parliament would put on that word. Later the pamphlet touches on the "Oath and Covenant", stating that those "who take such a voluntary Oath against us" will "render him uncapable of our pardon." This it seems is a hardening of the positions in the war, an attempt not just to ensure support but perhaps also a way to make it harder for those who wished to remain neutral to do so. , 8vo 8" - 9" tall, 8 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Censorinus Grammaticus. De Die Natali.
|
Heinric Lindenbrog, ed. & comm. Leiden: Johann Maire, 1642. 8vo. (?)8,A-S8. [16],250.[38]pp. Contemp. limp vellum, old library stamps on t.p., bookplate of " Le Bibliophobe Bechtel" One folding diagram, 8 text cuts. Censorinus (3rd c. A.D.), Roman grammarian and author of this work on Natal days. "The first part deals with human life, particularly its origins, the second with time and its divisions." OCD."...De die natali, which is extant, is dedicated as a birhday present to a little-known patron, Quintus Caerellius; according to Censorinus' own statements,i it was written in 238. The content of this comprehensive work can be divided into three parts... The first part, which is based on the Roman savant Varro, deals chiefly with human procreation and pregnancy, with excursuses on the influence of the stars and on music. In the second part, which is based on a lost work by Varro, Censorinus treats the different divisions of time (age, year, month, day, etc.). As in the first part, he mentions the doctrines of Greek philosophers. Not all of the De die natali has survived; the manuscript of the conclusion has been lost, as are its author and title. This work, now entitled Fragmentum Censorini, is a more important for the history of science...It contains a series of short tractates from an encyclopedic work on astronomy, geometry, music, and metrics. The chapter on geometry, which deals with the definitions, postulates, and axioms of book I of Euclid's Elements, differs greatly from the other known translations of Euclid. The chapters on metrics are very detailed. This part contains the oldest known information on Roman metrics and may be based on a work by Varro. Thus De die natali and Fragmentum Censorini enrich our view of Greek and Roman science..." DNB STCN 164208. Caillet 2135. Gardiner, Astrologica, 734. Schweiger I,101. Houzeau-Lancaster I,1046. "The history of the study of the "Sefer Yetzirah" is one of the most interesting in the records of Jewish literature. With the exception of the Bible, scarcely any other book has been the subject of so much annotation. Aristotelians, Neoplatonists, Talmudists, and cabalists have used the book as a source, or at least thought they did so. Two points must be taken into consideration in judging the importance of the work: the influence which it exerted on the development of Jewish philosophy, especially on its mystic side, and the reputation which it enjoyed for more than a thousand years in most Jewish circles... a thaumaturgical work that was popular in the Talmudic period. " [EJ]"... small in size but enormous in influence, the sefer Yetzirah ('Book of Creation), the earliest extant Hebrew text of systematic, speculative thought. Its brevity -- less than 2,000 words altogether even in its longer version-- allied to its obscure and at the same time laconic and enigmatic style, as well as its terminology, have no parallel in other works on related subjects... The central subject of Sefer Yetzirah is a compact discourse on cosmology and cosmogony... outstanding for its clearly mystical character." [Scholem, Kabbalah, 1974.]Rittangel (606?-1652) was professor-extraordinary of Oriental languages in the University of Konigsburg. He changed his religious affiliation several times and there is some question if he was an apostate Jew. His translation of the Sepher Yetzirah is the first bi-lingual edition of the work. The commentary ascribed to RABaD of Posquieres was known to have been by another author even in the sixteenth century as noted by Rabbi Hayim Vital. Latter research has ascribed it to Joseph ben Shalom Ashkenazi, a 14th century rabbi in Barcelona. [See: Gershom Scholem, Major Trends, 407, n137.]This was the edition used by 19th century students of the kabbalah. STCN 164204 [not reporting errata leaf]. Scholem, Bibl. Kabbalistica, 943. Lutetiae Parisiorum [Paris], Sumptibus Sebastiani Cramoisy et Gabrielis Cramoisy; Viduae Edmundi Martini & Joannis Boudot, 1642, 1684. Folio (35 x 23cm). Newly rebound in black cloth, gilt-lettered red morocco labels to spines. Previous owner's signatures and library stamps to title-pages. Greek and Latin text in parallel columns. Title-pages in black and red, with engraved printer's device. Chipping and some tears to original front and rear endpapers, v.3 lacks original ffep, piece torn off from ffep of v.2. Few worm holes. Volumes 1-4 were edited by Jacques Sirmond, S.J. published in 1642, and contain the works of Theodoret; volume 5 was edited by Jean Garnier, S.J. published in 1684, and contains supplements to the first 4 volumes, a biography of Theodoret and a dissertation "De libris Theodoreti" (both by Garnier), additional dialogues of Theodoret, a collation by Fulvius Ursinus (1529-1600) of citations used by Theodoret, several dissertations by Garnier: "De fide Theodoreti", "Critica de V. Synodo Generali", "De Theodoreti & orientalium causa"; and "Eutherii Tyanorum Episcopi Sermones", the sermons of Bishop Eutherius of Tyana, from the first complete edition of the works of Marius Mercator, edited by Garnier in 1673. These Sermons, says Garnier, had been falsely attributed to Theodoret by the Nestorians. Theodoret was an advocate of Nestorius, who was deposed and exiled at Ephesus in 431. He urged Nestorius not to reject the expression Theotokos and, to the end of his life, held that Nestorius never taught two persons in Christ. For this stance, Theodoret found much trouble with Cyril and the Alexandrines, though he appears to have been in good standing with Rome. At the Council of Chalcedon (451) he signed the anathema against Nestorius, though probably only in the sense of condemning the heresy imputed to him. Jacques Sirmond, S.J. (1559-1651) was one of the greatest scholars of the 17th century. He published several editions of Greek and Latin Christian writings. Jean Garnier, S.J. (1612-1681) was a noted patristic scholar and moral theologian. He is known particularly for his publication of the works of Marius Mercator, the 5th century ecclesiastical writer.

Mark C. Pilkinton
Bristol
|
University of Toronto Press. Located on the Avon Which Drains Into the Severn estuary on the West Coast of England, Bristol was, from its very early days, a trading, manufacturing, and religious centre. Made an independent county in 1373 by Edward III, Bristol maintained a high and prosperous profile throughout the Middle Ages and for much of the Renaissance, being a seaport from which such explorers as John Cabot set out to discover the New World. Bristol's surviving medieval and Renaissance theatrical documents span a period of time from 1279 to 1642. In the introduction to the volume, Mark Pilkinton surveys the social, economic, and religious history of Bristol, and provides a commentary on the major kinds of entertainments found there. They include local and professional drama, guild performances, and Corpus Christi pageants, as well as recorded performances of acrobats, musicians, tumblers, and a company of child performers. Of special interest is the unique, purpose-built indoor playhouse in Wine Street, which operated between 1605 and 1625. The Records of Early English Drama series establishes the context of early English drama by examining the historical manuscripts that provide evidence of drama, secular music, communal entertainment, and ceremony from the Middle Ages to 1642, when the Puritans closed the public theatres in London. The volumes make available these historical transcripts together with the necessary interpretative introductions and critical apparatus to explicate the materials for the reader. Bristol is the thirteenth publication in the series. These records are an invaluable addition to the scholarship of early drama, establishing as they do part of the total context of the greatdrama of Shakespeare, his predecessors, and his contemporaries. These fourteen important works by Erasmus - the edition of his most important letters after a 'Vita', edited by Petrus Scriverius, his famous 'Laus stultitiae', and three of his linguistic works in the first volume, and nine theological works in volume 2 - belong to a project of the Leiden publisher, printer and bookseller Joannes Maire (1603-1657). This project that can be seen as a series of editions of Erasmus's collected works, ensured Maire's reputation through the ages. 23 different volumes appeared between 1641 and 1652. It has long been thought that Petrus Scriverius was the editor, but now there is proof that in fact Willem Henricus Vorstius, a learned Remonstrant minister in the village of Warmond (near Leiden), did the job (Breugelmans, p. 24).Eleven violumes came out in 1641 (5 of which in the present collection); two in 1642 (one present), three in 1643 (2 present), one in 1644 (present), three in 1645 (one present), one in 1648 (present), one in 1649 (present), one in 1650 (present), and two in 1652 (present). |
Obra rara, desconocida a Nicolás Antonio. Procedencia: 1. London, printed for S.H. 1642 - 4to., (8)pp., including blank verso of last leaf A4, all four leaves affected by light dampstain, preserved in modern wrappers with printed title label on upper cover. First edition: variant issue. Wing P.1065. Thomason I, p.93. Gillett (Burned Books) p.675. 'At the general assizes for the county of Kent, held at Maidstone, a petition was framed which was reported to the Commons on March 28, 1642. On account of its source it became known as the Kentish Petition. It was, in its printed form, addressed to the Commons, and it asked for a 'favourable reception' on account of its 'good, peaceable, and pious purposes'. After thanking the Parliament for 'those excellent Lawes' which had been enacted, it prayed for the execution of the statutes against papists; also that the Liturgy of the Church should be 'injoyed quiet and free from interruptions, scornes, prophanesesse, threats and force'; for the preservation of the episcopal government; for the calling of a 'generall Synod' to be elected by the clergy, to which should be referred 'all Differences concerning Religion and Cerimonies'; for the suppression of 'the odious and abominable scandall of schismaticall and seditious Sermons and Pamphlets,' and also of those men who without license preached 'their impious and discontented Doctrine . to the advancing of Heresie, Schisme, Prophanenesse, Libertinisme, Anabaptisme, and Atheisme'; for the establishment of some agency to take the place of the ecclesiastical courts with their former power of excommunication. Other points in the petition concerned the militia, the administration of the law, accommodation with the King, and several economic questions'. [Gillett, op. cit., pp.371-2]. The Petition caused consternation all round, not least its political content and its references to the militia. It was later ordered that all copies of the Petition should be seized whenever found, and burned next day, April 9, between ten and twelve o'clock at Westminster, Cheapside, and Smithfield, by the hand of the common hangman. The printer was brought to the bar, but the punishment awarded to him was not recorded. [See a much fuller commentary in Gillett pp.367, 371-375]. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
