Theodori Bezae
JESU CHRISTI DOMINI NOSTRI NOVUM TESTAMENTUM. CAMBRIDGE EDITION 1642.
|
1642 - Apparently this edition was published in Cambridge in 1642. It contains Bezae's translation and interpretation, the Latin Vulgate, the Greek version, and commentary by Bezae. In addition there appears to be a dedication to Queen Elizabeth. The book is bound (rebound?) in black leather with seven ribs. The front appears to be hand painted in blue, gold and red with the title "Jesu Christi Domini Nostri Novum Testamentum." Photos are available. The book measures approximately 14" x 9" x 2 & 3/4". The pages may have been moist at one time. At the top of the title page is a handwritten name that appears to be "James Macnair" and under the name is written "Slamanan." Records indicate that there was a Scotish minister by the name of James Macnair at the Presbytery of Lauder in 1844. The title page and the following page are missing small portions at the lower right corners. The text is not effected. Portions of some pages are turning brown and there are some small stains. The endpapers are marbled. The front and rear hinges are slightly stressed. Edges of pages are dark. The main body of the book consists of 766 pages plus an index.

CHARLES I, king of England, Scotland, and Ireland.
His Majesties Answer to a book, entituled, The Declaration, or Remonstrance of the Lords and Commons, of the 19th of May, 1642.
|
Publisher: London: by Robert Barker; and by the assignes of John Bill, 1642Small quarto (183 × 143 mm), pp. [ii], 30. Modern paper wrappers. Short closed tear to last leaf not affecting text, a good copy. First London edition (there were reprints at York and Cambridge). A response to A declaration or remonstrance of the state of the kingdome, agreed on by the Lords and Commons assembled in Parliament, May 19, 1642. This is one of a series of pamphlets designed to explain openly to Charles's subjects why what was demanded of him by parliament could not be justified by law, by custom, or by prudence. He almost certainly won the argument, and persuaded more people than did his opponents that they and not he represented the greater threat of tyranny and a greater hazard of unleashing anarchy. In reality the pamphlets were written principally by men whom he would have numbered among his critics in the 1630s, opponents of the personal rule who now feared that parliament would overturn the constitution: Lucius Cary, Viscount Falkland; Sir John Colepeper; and Edward Hyde (ODNB). John Vaux
A New Almanacke and Prognostication for the Yeare of Our Lord God 1642. Being the Second from the Leape-Yeare. Calculated for the Meridian of the Ancient City of Durham. Composed By John Vaux of St Hellen Awckland - Almanac - Almanack -
|
John Dawson, London 1642 - [39] A rare mid-seventeenth century Almanac by John Vaux - only one other copy of this almanac is recorded which is in the Bodleian library in Oxford. Vaux who was a Northumbrian clergyman produced a series of almanacs 'calculated' for the 'Meridian of the ancient City of Durham' and was apparently suspended from his position at St Helen's in Auckland and imprisoned for selling the books at his altar table. This almanac is printed in red and black and is partly interleaved with blank sheets that have been used as a writing book by its first owner for notes and jottings. Thus the blank sheet opposite 'September' has manuscript records of two dozen debts to the book's owner, including: 'This for a pigge - 0 - 1 - 4' and 'This more money at Candlemas - 0 - 1 - 0'. Elsewhere the owner of the book has written names - presumably of friends and family - beside the birthday dates in the almanac. The printed text falls into two sections. The first section which lasts for eight leaves includes the 'Computation of Time' and days of the year and begins with a small, elegant, woodcut 'Anatomie of Man's Body'. A new title page opens the second section which casts a 'Prognostication for the yeare of your Lord God 1642'. The text is remarkably clean and fresh with only minor discolouration to the last blank page. There are no page numbers or signatures but the book is duodecimo sized. It is bound in modern dark paper wrappers and housed in an atractive custom-made tree calf book-box with gilt decorations. ESTC R34338. Amsterdam, Crispijn de Passe, 1642.. Folio. Loose lvs. in half vellum cover, sides covered with marbled paper. The lvs. have been provisionally bound together: traces of binding in the left margins. Together 31 large engraved architectural plates of classical columns, wooden furniture, ornaments, fountains, doorways, designs of Dutch houses of ca. 300 x 200 mm. by Crispijn II de Passe and Paulus van Vianen; added are 2 smaller plates of ornamented fire-places (ca. 220 x 150 mm.).. This work apparently was also sold as the third part of a larger work consisting of three parts, evidently printed at the same time (the parts could also be sold separately):- Part 1: Jacob Barozzio de Vignola, Regola de'cinque ordini d'architettura ... Con la nuova aggionta di Michel-Angelo Buonaroti (together with title in Dutch, French and German; Amsterdam, (Crispijn de Passe) for Jan Jansz. & Jan van Hilten, 1642). Here not present.- Part 2: La ii parte dell architettura dell Vignola e'altri famossi architetti ... (14 plates present, see below).- Part 3: our Oficina arcularia . From Part 3 which originally contains 19 (or 20) large engraved plates, we have here 17 plates of this second very enlarged edition of this series of architectonical plates by Crispijn II de Passe. The first edition of this series, consisting of only 14 plates (numbered A (title), and A-N) of expensive and fashionable pieces of furniture of French and Dutch design, was published by Crispijn I de Passe in Utrecht in 1621 (see reproduction of the title in Veldman, fig. 139). The title of this series Oficina arcularia (The cabinetmaker's shop ...), with the translation of the title in French, German and Dutch, shows that the publisher was aiming at an international market. The plates also demonstrate that Crispijn II not only had a thorough knowledge of the latest developments in furniture-making and styles of ornament, but also that he was well acquainted with the work of his predecessor Hans Vredeman de Vries's Differents pourtraicts de menuiserie which was published by Philips Galle in Antwerp around 1583, containing 16 plates with furniture designs which are very similar to Crispijn's plates (see Hollstein XLVIII, part 2, 491-507).In the present enlarged second 1642-edition there are 6 more plates, while one of the first edition is missing (A third edition appeared in 1651):- A: Title within an asymmetrical Corinthian frame (see Veldman, fig. 139).- A[bis] - B: 2 plates with measured elevations and details of the five orders.- C: decoration for furniture (mantelpieces?).- D: a half symmetry view of designs for an ornate bed.- E-I, L-M: 7 plates with further furniture designs, often half-symmetry. Plate G is called 'G2'. As the BAL copy has only plate 'G1', this is possibly an unrecorded variant (altered for the third edition of 1651?). Plate K is lacking.- N: six chairs and three tables.- O: a half of a pulpit, attributed to Hendrick de Keyser. The 'O'-plate was probably added for the 1651 edition and was originally plate XXIII in section 1 of part 2 (see below). Plate P is lacking.- Q: three grotesque cartouches ('O' in the BAL copy!)- R: swags and grotesque masks.- S: six herms and other supporters.(T: there is no plate T in this copy, but it is suggested that most copies don't have that plate at all). The present collection of plates includes also the following 14 large engraved and etched plates from part 2 (containing a total of 83 plates, divided in 2 sections: (1) plates I-XXVI and (2) 5 series of resp. 6, 6, 10, 6 and 29 plates). Here are present all the plates designed by Dutch architects ; they are engraved by Crispijn II de Passe (and 2 by Paulus van Vianen):- from section 1 : all the 4 plates ( 3 plates ; plate XXIII: a half of a pulpit, attributed to Hendrick de Keyser, transferred as plate 'O' to part 3 (see above)) of designs by Dutch architects and artists (the other 22 plates are by Italian architects): - plate XXIIII: a font or fountain signed 'M.M. Keyser inventor'. - plate XXIIII [= XXVI] (partly erased): a fountain signed 'Paulus van Vianen inven:'. This state not in Hollstein : the engraved Roman number in upper right corner differs from the copy listed by Hollstein, where the number is almost completely erased and altered in a newly engraved "XXVI" (just below the location of the erased number). - plate XXV (partly erased): a fountain signed 'Paulus van Vianen delin: F.'. Plates XXIIII XXV are engraved by the famous silversmith Paulus Paulusz van Vianen (ca. 1607-1652) and are probably published here for the first time .- from section 2 : - the complete second series of 6 plates , numbered I-VI: six elevations of Dutch houses. Plates II-IV are signed as drawn by P. Vingboons. Plates I and V may not be by Vingboons, and were not among the designs published in his Afbeelsels der voornaemste gebouwen (with plates by Johannes Vingboons after Philp Vingboons) which included versions in reverse of plates II-IV and VI. - plates II-VI of the 4th series, consisting of 5 plate s : five elevations and plans for doorways and porticos. Plate II has the title: " Porta del inventione de Joan de Santen Archite (sic) Romano. Poort naer de inventie van Joan van Santen Architeckt tot Roomen" .So this additional collection of 14 beautiful large architectural plates are all the plates designed by Dutch architects and engraved by Crispijn II de Passe (and 2 by Paulus Paulusz van Vianen) from the second part of the 1642 edition of the famous Regola delli cinque ordini d'architectura by Vignola. Added are 2 smaller engraved plates of ornamented fire-places, numbered 18 and 21, from an unidentified edition. Prevenance: From the collection of the Antwerp architect August Sschoy (1838-1885). Schoy was professor at the royal academy of arts in Antwerp and author of the reward-winning Histoire de l'influence italienne sur l'architecture dans les Pays Bas (1879). The plates are in fair condition, all with the small collector's stamp of the Antwerp architect Auguste Schoy (1838-1885).- (Fronthinge weak; some staining and tears (repaired), some margins strengthened or repaired, 4 plates without margins mounted on fitting leaves). Ilja Veldman, Crispijn de Passe and his progeny (2001), p. 263, 337 and figs. 139 and 140; Hollstein XVI, 174; Hollstein Paulus Paulusz. Van Vianen 1 and 2; cf. Cm.30x21,5. Pg.30,304. Legatura in tela editoriale.

Homer. 1642 - 4to., (7) + 1pp. (verso of last leaf blank), title-page a little dustmarked, a good wide-margined copy with the exception of the second leaf which is a little cropped at head with partial loss of a few letters on verso, preserved in later plain wrappers with printed label on upper cover. First edition: rare. Wing B.5120. Thomason E 200(a). ESTC & OCLC together locate copies at 6 libraries in Brit. Isles + 8 elsewhere (i.e. all in US). Although this purports to be a speech actually delivered in the Commons by the Dorset M.P. John Browne (1580-1659), an annotation in the Thomason copy suggests that it was 'not spoken in ye House'. It is, in any event, a strongly worded warning to Parliament, little more than eight months before the commencement of the Civil War and barely two weeks after the attempted arrest of the five Members, that Dorset and particularly those elements in the Digby camp, was a potential powder keg, fully armed and ready to blow. Browne gives a particularly gloomy picture. Dorset was 'never in so much danger as now, never so dejected, nor ever so oppressed as at this present time'. He refers to the 'treacherous confederacy betwixt the Lord Digby and Lunsford' and warns that Digby was particularly dangerous because of 'the greatnesse of his authoritie with us, his larg revenues and multiplicity of tenants, who are for the most part Recusants, and impetuous resisters of the Protestant religion: and not only so, but also by their multiplicity of armor, muskets, and other ammunition every particular man exceeding, having greater and larger store, than any neighboring Protestant thereunto adjoyning, their being within ten miles distance of the said Lord Digbies house, at Sherborn, Evill, Brunswicke, Bedminster, and other villages within the compendium of his Lordships demeans, above seventy housholds of Roman Catholicks, weil provided to make resistance against any that shall oppose them .'. Browne later concludes by suggesting that Digby's Dorset set should be 'disarmed of their store of pernicious provision' and 'those which are suspicious persons may have their houses searched, for fear of conspiracie'. FIRST EDITION of this important reference work of "whos who" of Parma with emphasis on the author's lifetime; "Del Dottore Ranuccio Pico [1568-1644] Secretario dell'Altezza Sereniss. di Parma." The work is divided in four parts: the first is a collection of biographical accounts of important citizens; the second is a catalogue of the bishops of Parma; the third part consists of biographies of those who received doctorates at the University including accounts of their published works--the present author gives himself two and a half pages; the last part is a supplement to the first three parts. An important source book for the history of the city and university with a detailed and useful index. The work is rare and apparently never reprinted with OCLC locating only two microfilm copies (LC & Univ. of Illinois). These fourteen important works by Erasmus - the edition of his most important letters after a 'Vita', edited by Petrus Scriverius, his famous 'Laus stultitiae', and three of his linguistic works in the first volume, and nine theological works in volume 2 - belong to a project of the Leiden publisher, printer and bookseller Joannes Maire (1603-1657). This project that can be seen as a series of editions of Erasmus's collected works, ensured Maire's reputation through the ages. 23 different volumes appeared between 1641 and 1652. It has long been thought that Petrus Scriverius was the editor, but now there is proof that in fact Willem Henricus Vorstius, a learned Remonstrant minister in the village of Warmond (near Leiden), did the job (Breugelmans, p. 24).Eleven violumes came out in 1641 (5 of which in the present collection); two in 1642 (one present), three in 1643 (2 present), one in 1644 (present), three in 1645 (one present), one in 1648 (present), one in 1649 (present), one in 1650 (present), and two in 1652 (present). Den sesten druck. Leeuwarden, Gijsbert Sybes, 1642.. 4to. Contemp. vellum. With title within richly engraved allegorical borders, by J. van Meurs, and full-page engraved portrait of the author by W. de Geest after Jonas Suyderhoef. (32), 498, (22, 2 blank) pp.. Sixth revised and enlarged edition, in the rare quarto format, of one of the most popular Dutch 17th century schoolbooks on classical history, and at the same time intended for the general public too. The book is divided into 43 chapters, and each chapter again into about 30 lessons, devoted to the best and most glorious acts of great men from classical history, not only of emperors and marshals, but also of philosophers and artists, each lesson always including 10 or 12 proverbs or wise sayings to be learned by heart. Thus, the book combined the two elements most valued at the time to educate children, examples of great men and proverbs. Franciscus Heerman (1610-ca.1670), was born in Friesland, studied at Wittenberg in Germany, and afterwards worked as a lawyer in Amsterdam. His book, the only one known from his hand, was first published at Amsterdam in 12mo in 1634, and was numerous times republished, a 30th edition still being published in 1715. Mainly published in small octavo, the present quarto edition, with its fine engraved title and the large engraved portrait is the most rare. Anna Roemer Visscher in one of her poems praised Heerman for his erudition and wisdom. Good copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed; old owner's ms. entries on endpapers, library stamp on half-title; few small imperfections). Muller 383: "Weinig Nederlandsche boeken zijn zoo populair geweest"; Scheepers II, 755: "De 4o-uitgaaf is zeldzaam"; Sale Cat. J.L. Beijers, Jan. 1959 (Coll. Decorative double hemisphere map of the World, richly embellished with Celestial models of the northern and southern hemispheres and other natural phenomenon. The map includes many famous cartographic inaccuracies. Very incomplete Australia, although with place names and notes of the early discoverers included. The east coast of New Zealand is shown, along with the Tracts of Tasman's 1642 voyage and Magellan's Voyage. The detail in SE Asia is very interesting for the period, as is the treatment of Japan and the NW Coast of America. The allegorical scenes around the map are a rich combination of science, fantasy and artwork, including two celestial hemispheres, Mt. Etna erupting, numerous natural phenonmena of land and sea, and representations of movements of the sun. Numerous cherubs and windheads, representations of the stars, sun and moon and other decorative features are shown. (Nuremberg, 1720) [color: Hand Colored, size: 22 x 19 inches, condition: VG]
