London 1642 - The Wing listing, W691A, shows the item as a pamphlet executed in quarto, which certainly seems correct for this sixteen page unbound item whose actual size measures a scant 7 inches by 5 1/2 inches. The title page, in addition to some fairly trivial staining, has a pencilled note saying "1642," and notes of the item's institutional placements. No severe foxing, dogearing, chips or tears are present, and I surmise that the small text's edges are natural and as-made. The previous Wing listing appears to have been a misattribution as S4495. This listing is cancelled. The balance of the title page after "&C." reads "Being a Neccesary Discourse for the Present Times, Concerning the Unseasonable Difference between the Protestant and the Puritan." *We feel that books offered for internet sale should be described thoroughly and accurately. Books listed by Brass Dolphin are so described, and graded, using the strict, traditional standards. For this reason, we have virtually zero returns.* [Attributes: First Edition]

1642. FIRST EDITION. COKE, Edward. The First Part of the Institutes of the Lawes of England. or, a Commentarie upon Littleton, not the name of a Lawyer onely, but of the Law itself. London: Printed for the Societie of Stationers, 1628. Folio, contemporary full blind-stamped brown calf beautifully rebacked in calf-gilt, raised bands, red morocco spine label. $8500. First edition of Coke's First Institutes, among the greatest of British legal texts and a fundamental influence on America's founding fathers and American revolutionary principles. With black letter type in English, Latin and French throughout, bound with scarce Table (1630) omitted from the first edition, in handsome contemporary calf. "What Shakespeare has been to literature, what Bacon has been to philosophy, what the translators of the authorized version of the Bible have been to religion, Coke has been to the public and private law of England" (Reams, Some Makers of English Law, 132). Edward Coke devoted years "in compiling the works which have secured his immortality. If Bracton first began the codification of the Common Law, it was Coke who completed it. Ranging over the whole field of law, in comment, report, argument, and decision, the Institutes is a disorderly, pedantic, masterful work! [Here] the tradition of the common law from Bracton and Littleton, whose name Coke's Commentarie!the first part of the Institutes!made famous, firmly established itself as the basis of the constitution of the realm" (PMM 126). "The First Institute! was the only part of the Institutes published in the author's lifetime. It is clearly a book upon which he had been engaged in all his life! He made the supremacy of the law a cardinal doctrine of our constitutional law, and! determined the course of the development of our modern law" (Reams, 141-143, 147). When the Mayflower landed in North America in 1620, Coke's writings were aboard and ultimately laid the foundation for all legal training in the colonies. "Before the Revolution, Coke's Littleton was, as Jefferson reminded Madison!'the universal elementary textbook of law students'" (Randall, Thomas Jefferson, 52-3). Jefferson noted that Coke's Institutes "may still be considered as the fundamental code of the English law" (Sowerby II:1781). Coke's Institutes were "also prominent and in certain ways powerfully influential" on the revolutionary fervor of colonists: "Sir Edward Coke is everywhere in the literature! the citations are almost as frequent as, and occasionally even less precise than those to Locke, Montesquieu and Voltaire" (Bailyn, 30). First edition, with 1628 on title page, folding Gradus Parentele & Consanguinitatis leaf, and page 158 bound between 159 and 160 (as in Sweet & Maxwell I:449); bound with second edition, second printing of Coke's Table (with 1630 on title page), which "probably was intended to supplement copies" of the 1628 edition that were issued without it (STC 15789). Occasional mispagination without loss of text. Text generally fresh, light margin dampstaining, one leaf with slight margin loss not affecting text (276). Il fut pour cela l'un des auteurs les plus constamment reedites pendant l'Ancien Regime. L'hommage que lui adressa Boileau (« Enfin Malherbe vinta, » ) exprime cette dette des ecrivains classiques. A humourous pamphlet on the recess of the Long Parliament in 1641/1642, during the dark period of the Plague and the political unrest, at the height of the English Revolution at which time, in addition to all other troubles, English society suffered the social and economic costs of militarisation. 8 pages of text, fine, held in a folded marbled paper wrapper and encased in a larger hardback chemise of grey boards with a green cloth spine, the whole made-up for protective purpose.

FIRST EDITION of this important reference work of "whos who" of Parma with emphasis on the author's lifetime;. "Del Dottore Ranuccio Pico [1568-1644] Secretario dell'Altezza Sereniss. di Parma." The work is divided in four parts: the first is a collection of biographical accounts of important citizens; the second is a catalogue of the bishops of Parma; the third part consists of biographies of those who received doctorates at the University including accounts of their published works--the present author gives himself two and a half pages; the last part is a supplement to the first three parts. An important source book for the history of the city and university with a detailed and useful index. The work is rare and apparently never reprinted with OCLC locating only two microfilm copies (LC & Univ. of Illinois). It is interesting to note that there were several last minute corrections made with canceled leaves that also appear in the copy used for the microfilm Four parts in 1 vol.: [10], 3-246; 97, [24]; [2], 81-173, [68] pp. With cancelled leaves (complete with same cancels as in the Folger microform copy); Woodcut printer's devices on each of the four title- pages and printed within ornate typographic borders; several contemporary ownership inscriptions on title-page as well as an early illegible ownership stamp; H.P. Reunion tres rare de 3 ouvrages importants pour l'histoire de la Catalogne, traduits en Francais. Ils concernent le conflit connu sous le nom de "Guerra dels Segadors", qui opposa les Catalans au Roi d'Espagne entre 1640 et 1652, date a laquelle la capitulation de Barcelone apres un long siege, mit fin au conflit. Ces traductions francaises, imprimees dans la ville normande de Rouen, sont tres rares. Palau ne connaissait, des deux premiers textes, que les exemplaires de la Biblioteca de Catalunya. Ces ouvrages ont ete publies separement mais ils se trouvent ici reunis par l'editeur qui a fait imprimer le titre collectif suivant: "Histoire de tout ce qui s'est passe en la Catalogne depuis qu'elle a secoue le joug de l'Espagnola.". Palau ne connaissait pas ce tirage particulier. Quelques traces d'usure a la reliure, des rousseurs. Bon exemplaire. Palau, 285728.

One of the most influential works of the 17th and 18th centuries on perspective. Originally published at Paris in 1642-49 and remained a standard text for over a hundred years. This edition is translated by Ephraim Chambers, the encyclopaedist.

In 1572 he was made bishop of Volturra where he was recognized for his wisdom and learning. He published several historical and religious works the most famous of which was this massive encyclopedia of miscellaneous knowledge. It was first printed in Paris in 1610 but later printings kept adding more sections to it, until it reached the massive seven volumes in this edition.#11;There is too much to cover in a brief listing but he covers science, plants & herbs,oracles, dwarves, dragons, the perfidy of the jews, law, angels and spirits, devils, demonology,women, pigmees, posession, apparitions, etc. VD 17 :109663T. "Trois volumes in folio sur cinq, comprenant au Tome I : de Berold de Saxe, premier Comte de Savoie a Amedee Septieme. 214 pages avec une preface de l'auteur. Tome IV : Charles Emmanuel Premier. 190 pages. Tomes V : de Victor Amede Premier a Charles Emmanuel Second. 139 pages. Histoire finissant en 1642 et se terminant par ""Fin des memoires de Savoie composees par le C.R."". Cet ensemble est une copie tout debut XVIIIe du manuscrit jamais publie du Chanoine Rambert de la Sainte Chapelle de Chambery, mort en 1728. On fait reference a cet ouvrage dans ""Manno"" biblio tome 1, ""Foras"" Tome 5, pages 57 a 60, ""Grillet"" Tome 2, page 143, ""SSHA"" Tome 28, pages XXXIII a XXXVII. Deux exemplaires complets existent a la bibliotheque Royale de Turin, et un exemplaire chamberien est passe dans les mains de Mr Mugnier qui le considere, quoique criticable, d'une agreable ecriture. En effet on y trouve Berold de Saxe, totalement invente afin de creer une filiation honorable a la famille de Savoie, mais aussi de multiples anecdotes forts curieuses, jamais justifiees dans leur provenance. Le Chanoine Rambert fut Eveque d'Aoste en 1727 juste avant sa mort lors de son voyage a Chambery en 1728. Il fait partie de la famille charge de la Baronnie de Chatillon et des Seigneurs de Chautagne. Les 3 volumes manuscrits sont relies dans un carton d'epoque avec dos devenu muet avec les marges frottes. Le tome IV a des traces d'humidite et le tome V une trace de vers. Aucun manque de texte, bien lisible d'une belle ecriture large. Document exceptionnellement rare malgre le manque des tomes II et III."

Seul le nom du librairie Le Petit permet de la classer apres celle de 1637. Tres bel exemplaire. Il provient des bibliotheques Ruble et Lurde avec ex-libris et chiffre dore au dos. Rückentitel.Der Jurist Hippolyt von Colli (auch: Colle 1561-1612) stammte aus einer italienischen Familie, sein Vater war aus religiösen Gründen nach Zürich geflüchtet. Er selbst studierte Rechtswissenschaft, wurde 1583 in Basel zum Doktor der Rechte promoviert und erhielt dort 1584 eine Professur, wechselte aber schon 1586 nach Heidelberg. 1589 kehrte er als Syndikus nach Basel zurück und war seit 1591 für Christian I. von Anhalt-Bernburg tätig, erst als Kanzler, dann als Gesandter an verschiedenen europäischen Höfen. 1593 trat er erneut in kurpfälzische Dienste und wurde Präsident des Hofgerichts und kurfürstlicher Rat, 1597 Wirklicher Geheimer Rat und 1603 Oberamtmann. Auch für die Kurpfalz war er in zahlreichen diplomatischen Missionen in ganz Europa unterwegs. - Der zweite Band wurde von dem hessischen Pfarrer Georg Draut herausgegeben. - Einband etw. berieben, bestoßen u. fleckig. 1642 Paris, Sebastien Picquet, 1642 ; in-8 ; plein velin ivoire de l'epoque, titre manuscrit au dos ; (38), 1026 pp., 1 tableau depliant "L'Arbre des choses..." entre les pages 26 et 27. EDITION ORIGINALE RARE. Fils d'un autre Andre qui fut conseiller (1607), maire (1609) puis echevin (1610) de Niort, Andre Dabillon est ne en 1606, tres probablement a Niort. Apres ses etudes a Poitiers, il entra dans l'ordre des jesuites ou il subit l'influence de Jean de Labadie qui, sombrant dans un mysticisme curieux, se prit pour une sorte de nouveau Jean-Baptiste ; en 1639, ils quitterent tous deux la Compagnie de Jesus. Dabillon l'accompagna chez l'eveque d'Amiens, Francois Le Febvre de Caumartin qui fit de lui un grand-vicaire ; ayant recu la permission de l'eveque, Andre Dabillon et Jean de Labadie allerent precher dans le diocese, mais ils y semerent de graves erreurs en matiere dogmatique et, en raison du scandale provoque, ils furent chasses de Picardie. Refusant de suivre Jean de Labadie dans ses erreurs et son apostasie, Dabillon accepta la cure de Magne, pres de Niort, situee dans le Marais poitevin et y mourut en 1664. Ses ecrits theologiques sont fondes sur la pensee d'un moine celebre du XIVe siecle, Guillaume d'Ockam, cordelier et dialecticien de premier ordre. Chasse de l'universite d'Oxford a l'occasion de disputes theologique, il se refugia a Paris ou Philippe Le Bel lui confia le soin de demontrer que les rois, au temporel, sont independants du Saint Siege. Ayant entrepris de denoncer les vices prives des papes, il fut excommunie en 1330, se sauva en Allemagne ou Louis de Baviere l'utilisa dans sa guerre contre le Saint Siege ; il mourut a Munich en 1347. Velin dechire le long de la charniere et en bas du dos, sans perte, ouvrage en bon etat general. La librairie sera fermee du 2 au 30 aout inclus. Reouverture le lundi 31 aout a 14 heures. (titre), cxlvi pp., (4) ff., 39 pp., (4) ff., 132 pp. Impression grecque et latine sur 2 colonnes avec certains passages imprimes en rouge. Rousseurs assez fortes sur certains ff. Cachet du grand seminaire de Tulle sur le 1er titre et ex-libris Savary repete plusieurs fois. Edition capitale pour l'etablissement du texte. Ignace, eveque d'Antioche vivait au Ier siecle de notre ere. Il s'offrit en martyre pendant les persecutions afin d'epargner ses fideles. Il ecrivit peu avant sa mort un certain nombre d'epitres a differentes communautes chretiennes. Jusqu'au XVIIe siecle, on admettait qu'elles etaient au nombre de 12, bien que certains ecrivains protestants missent en doute leur authenticite. Dans cette edition, l'archeveque Usher etablit le texte de 6 d'entre elles sur de nouveaux manuscrits, mettant en exergue (en rouge) les interpolations douteuses, avec des notes d'une prodigieuse erudition. On a relie a la suite l'Appendix Ignatiana du meme auteur, publie a Londres en 1647, qui contient des complements etablis apres l'edition de Vossius et des documents sur la vie et le martyre d'Ignace et de Polycarpe. FIRST EDITION of this important reference work of "whos who" of Parma with emphasis on the author's lifetime; "Del Dottore Ranuccio Pico [1568-1644] Secretario dell'Altezza Sereniss. di Parma." The work is divided in four parts: the first is a collection of biographical accounts of important citizens; the second is a catalogue of the bishops of Parma; the third part consists of biographies of those who received doctorates at the University including accounts of their published works--the present author gives himself two and a half pages; the last part is a supplement to the first three parts. An important source book for the history of the city and university with a detailed and useful index. The work is rare and apparently never reprinted with OCLC locating only two microfilm copies (LC & Univ. of Illinois). It is interesting to note that there were several last minute corrections made with canceled leaves that also appear in the copy used for the microfilm Four parts in 1 vol.: [10], 3-246; 97, [24]; [2], 81-173, [68] pp. With cancelled leaves (complete with same cancels as in the Folger microform copy); Woodcut printer's devices on each of the four title- pages and printed within ornate typographic borders; several contemporary ownership inscriptions on title-page as well as an early illegible ownership stamp; H.P. (Reliure de l'epoque). 2 feuillets blancs, 1 page de titre, 1 gravure frontispice, 12 pages non numerotees (2 epitres, table, approbation), 330 pages, 1 feuillet blanc. La gravure sur cuivre est de Claude Mellan. Bandeaux graves, lettrines & culs-de-lampe graves. Ouvrage compose de 28 lecons. La plus belle des editions de cet ouvrage, la seule in folio. Le plus important des traites ecrits par Richelieu, celui auquel il tenait le plus. Le cardinal mourut la meme annee, le 4 decembre 1642. Cet ouvrage est un des tout premiers edites par l'Imprimerie royale, creee justement par Richelieu, en 1640. Tres belle typographie en caracteres Garamond gros corps ; dans les tres grandes marges, quelques commentaires en petites italiques. Notre exemplaire a subi de fortes mouillures qui ont atteint la partie inferieure sur 1/4, 1/3 ou plus, des pages ; les derniers feuillets sont egalement taches ; manquent 4 feuillets (correspondant aux pages 179-180, 181-182, 297-298 & 299-300) remplaces par 4 feuillets en photocopies du meme format. Premiers & derniers feuillets restaures anciennement ; la reliure a ete habilement & anciennement restauree sur les coiffes & les coupes. Malgre ces defauts, l'ouvrage reste tres attachant, grace a sa rarissime & tres seduisante reliure fleurdelysee. (Photographie sur demande).

Paris, 28 March 1642. - 4to. ½ p. on folded double leaf. With autogr. address and traces of a seal. To the Swabian military leader Christoph Martin von Degenfeld (1599-1653), under whom Grotius's son had served in the Swedish army and to whom Grotius pledges his allegiance: "Nous touts qui sommes icy, moi, les Dames, le filz et la fille remercions vostre Illustrete de la souvenance qu'elle a de nous: et la prions de croire que ce qui a manque au traittement deu a ses qualitez est supple par l'affection qui a este, est, et sera toujours tres sincere [.]". - Degenfeld, who had distinguished himself in Wallenstein's force, later fought for the Swedish side; after the Emperor's victory in 1634, he had to flee to Strasbourg. He became High General of foreign cavalry in French services, but fell out with Cardinal Richelieu in the year of this letter and entered Venetian service as Governor-General of Dalmatia and Albania. This is probably Degenfeld's new "lieu de repos" to which Grotius refers in his present letter. Grotius himself was at the time serving as Swedish ambassador in Paris; his principal work, "De jure belli ac pacis" (1625), laid the foundations for international law. - Letters from Grotius's hand are of the utmost rarity; the present one is the only one established at German auctions since 1950 (Robert Amman collection, Stargardt, 16 Nov. 1961, no. 353).

London: by Robert Barker; and by the assignes of John Bill, Small quarto (183 × 143 mm), pp. [ii], 30. Modern paper wrappers. Short closed tear to last leaf not affecting text, a good copy. First London edition (there were reprints at York and Cambridge). A response to A declaration or remonstrance of the state of the kingdome, agreed on by the Lords and Commons assembled in Parliament, May 19, 1642. This is one of a series of pamphlets designed to explain openly to Charles's subjects why what was demanded of him by parliament could not be justified by law, by custom, or by prudence. He almost certainly won the argument, and persuaded more people than did his opponents that they and not he represented the greater threat of tyranny and a greater hazard of unleashing anarchy. In reality the pamphlets were written principally by men whom he would have numbered among his critics in the 1630s, opponents of the personal rule who now feared that parliament would overturn the constitution: Lucius Cary, Viscount Falkland; Sir John Colepeper; and Edward Hyde (ODNB). Tres rare recueil de poesies protestantes, dont seule cette premiere partie a ete publiee. L'auteur, Charles de Bouques etait avocat, "Seigneur de Pons, du Diocese de Montpellier". D'autres editions de ce livre ont ete publiees a Charenton, par Louis Vendosme, l'un des principaux imprimeurs de livres protestants de cette periode. Marges de certains feuillets courtes, avec legere atteinte au texte a deux endroits. Bon exemplaire. 1 seul exemplaire au NUC (ed. de Charenton, 1642).

Paris de l'Impression de Mariette rue St Jacques a l'Esperance 1642 [1643] 378 x 553 mm. Publiee par Pierre Mariette en 1643 dans le Theatre geographique de France, cette tres rare mappemonde est basee sur la carte de Hondius de 1617. Seulement deux etats de cette edition de Mariette sont connus. Notre exemplaire, en etat 1, est date de 1642 et porte la mention "de l'impression de Mariette". Elle est ornee de deux cartes celestes, de diagrammes circulaires contenant les tables des vents, les mouvements des planetes et un calendrier perpetuel commencant en 1637. Des vignettes de monstres marins, de vaisseaux et d'un Neptune s'ajoutent a la decoration de cette carte magnifiquement gravee. Pliure centrale restauree, sinon tres bel exemplaire, de la plus grande rarete. This rare and beautiful world map was based on the map by Hondius of 1617. It was published by Pierre Mariette in 1643 in his Theatre geographique de France. Only two states of this map are known. Our copy is in state 1, dated 1642 with the imprint of Pierre Mariette. It is superbly engraved and decorated with two celestial maps, circular diagrams containing tables of the winds and movements of the planets, and a perpetual calendar starting in 1637. The map is also embellished with vignettes of sea monsters, sailing ships and a Neptune. Centerfold restored, otherwise an excellent copy. Shirley, 358.
