Diatribae. Discourses on Divers Texts of Scripture: Delivered upon Severall Occasions. Bound with Diatribae. Or, a Continuation of Certain Discourses on Sundry Texts of Scripture: Delivered upon Severall Occasions.
|
London, John Clark. 1642 1648, 1st editions. (Leatherbound) Very good. (8), 1-335, (4), 241-527p. Early full leather binding with a few bruises, 3" tear upper front joint / hinge, shelf wear. Contents quite tight and clean with a few signatures starting. With the errata page. Wing 1596 & 1597. Wing 1597 identifies the second part as a second edition, when in fact it is a different publication with a largely similar title. Pagination of the second (1648) publication starts with page 241 and stops at page 527. Within these pages is found at 469 an additional title page also dated 1648 and titled "The Christian Sacrifice, or, the Solemne Worship in the Eucharist: Foretold by the Prophet Malachi, Taught by our blessed Savior, and Practised by the Primitive Church". The table of contents for the second volume agrees with the contents, but offers no explanation why pagination starts with page 241. Both volumes complete. See the Dictionary of National Biograpy for an extensive article on Mede (using the alternative spelling of Mead).

Editio Nova, cum Annotatis Auctoris. Accesserunt & Annotata in Epistolam Pauli ad Philemonem, 1 vol. in-8 rel. d'epoque plein velin a rabats, Apud Ioh. & Cornelium Blaeu, Amsterdami [Amsterdam], 1642, 2 ff. blancs, 12 ff. n. ch. Grotius, Hugo, philosopher and jurist (1583-1645).
ALS ("H. de Groot").
|
Paris, 28 March 1642. 4to. ½ p. on folded double leaf. With autogr. address and traces of a seal. To the Swabian military leader Christoph Martin von Degenfeld (1599-1653), under whom Grotius's son had served in the Swedish army and to whom Grotius pledges his allegiance: "Nous touts qui sommes icy, moi, les Dames, le filz et la fille remercions vostre Illustrete de la souvenance qu'elle a de nous: et la prions de croire que ce qui a manque au traittement deu a ses qualitez est supple par l'affection qui a este, est, et sera toujours tres sincere [...]". - Degenfeld, who had distinguished himself in Wallenstein's force, later fought for the Swedish side; after the Emperor's victory in 1634, he had to flee to Strasbourg. He became High General of foreign cavalry in French services, but fell out with Cardinal Richelieu in the year of this letter and entered Venetian service as Governor-General of Dalmatia and Albania. This is probably Degenfeld's new "lieu de repos" to which Grotius refers in his present letter. Grotius himself was at the time serving as Swedish ambassador in Paris; his principal work, "De jure belli ac pacis" (1625), laid the foundations for international law. - Letters from Grotius's hand are of the utmost rarity; the present one is the only one established at German auctions since 1950 (Robert Amman collection, Stargardt, 16 Nov. 1961, no. 353).

Macerata, Agostino Grisei, 1642. - 2 Teile in 1 Bd. 4to (210 x 148 mm). [6] Bl., 85 S., 1 leeres Bl.; 140 S., 1 Bl. Errata. Etwas späterer flexibler Pergamentband mit hs. Rückentitel. Erstausgabe. When Grant Morden died in 1934 the estate was purchased by Charles Boot who transformed Heatherden Hall into the office building for a new movie complex which occupied the grounds and named it Pinewood Film Studios after seeing the large number of pine trees that surrounded the area. Powell, Robert
A Treatise of the Antiquity, Authority, Uses and Jurisdiction of the Ancient Courts of Leet ...
|
Robert Powell First The volume is continuously paginated, but the second portion, entitled An Explanation of the Old Oath of Legeance, has a divisional title page dated 1641. Both title pages give Richard Badger as the printer. The title page is somewhat creased and browned, and is cropped on the bottom edge but with no loss of printed matter. Generally the book is in clean state, though inevitably for a book of this age there is occasional spotting, staining and creases to the upper corners of text leaves. Very Good

LABBE (Pierre).
Ludovico justo et victori Lugdunum.
|
Lugduni, ex typographia Claudii Cayne, 1642. in-4. 11pp. Demi-toile postérieure à la Bradel. Edition Originale (?).

Quelques rousseurs.

MORE, Henry.
Psychodia [graece] Platonica: or a Platonicall Song of the Soul, consisting of foure severall Poems … Hereto is added a paraphrasticall Interpretation of the answer of Apollo consulted by Amelius, about Plotinus soul departed this life ...
|
Cambridge, Printed by Roger Daniel ... 1642. First edition of an attractive volume of poetry by ‘one of the leading philosophers of his time’ and ‘the most prolific of the group of philosophical divines known now as the Cambridge Platonists’ (Oxford DNB). The four poems are about the life of the soul, the immortality of the soul, the wakefulness of the soul after death, and the plurality of souls. ‘Psychozoia’ in particular ‘has the first spontaneous glow of the satisfying revelation the author’s passionately hungry soul had sought and found’ (OHEL). The Spenserian stanza, long out of fashion by this date, while not perfectly handled throughout is peculiarly suited to the persistent trajectory of More’s thought from lucidity towards mysticism.Mindful of the obscurity of neo-Platonic vocabulary, More has seen fit to append an ‘interpretation of the more unusuall names or words that occurre in the foregoing Poems’, a glossary, in effect, of neo-Platonism. The expanded and revised text of 1647 brings with it an even greater supply of explanatory material, and the verses are smoother, but this first edition communicates an appealing freshness, and is much less common. A LETTER SENT TO HIS MAJESTIE, from the Lords Justices, and Councell in Ireland, April 23. 1642. Concerning his Majesties resolution to go into Ireland .
|
London: printed by Robert Barker, printer to the Kings most excellent majestie: and by the assignes of John Bill. 1642 - Small 4to, pp. [ii], 5, [1]; disbound. A very good copy. A letter ?From Your Majesties Castle of Dublin, 23 April 1642? signed by the Earl of Ossory, Lord Digby and nine others. Replying to the King?s stated intention of coming to Ireland, ?out of a just sense of the great miseries and afflictions of your distressed subjects in this your kingdom of Ireland, occasioned by the inhumane cruelties of the Rebells here. And out of your tender and gracious care of your good subjects on this side, hath firmly resolved . with all possible speed to make a journey hither, in your royall person, for the full and finall suppressing of this rebellion?. Wing L1619; not in Sweeney, Ireland and the Printed Word. ESTC reveals that there are in fact two very similar editions, one with the imprint date in roman numerals (as here) and one with it in arabic numerals (the rarer version). Assuming that both editions were indeed printed by Robert Barker, it seems probable that he had both printed concurrently, to speed the production of enough copies to feed his market.
|
4to. [22 x 17.5 cm], (8) ff. including engraved frontispiece and title page, 150 pp. (verso), 150 engraved plates (recto), (5) pp., with five half-title pages not in pagination. Bound in early mottled quarter-calf with blue paper over boards. Handwritten notes on front blank. Light fingersoiling on corner of frontispiece, title and scattered leaves, occasional foxing or spotting. Overall very good, with clear impressions of the plates. First German-language edition and well-preserved copy of the Jesuit's five-part book on the uses of "practical perspective." First published in French in 1642 in response to Girard Desargues' 1636 Maniere universelle, in which Desargues advanced a new !double-scale' method of calculating perspective, Dubreuil's much longer work appeals to the "painters, engravers, architects, goldsmiths, sculptors, embroiderers, tapestry-workers and all others" for whom an understanding of perspective is necessary, emphasizing practicality over what he sees as Desargues' uselessly theoretical and heterodox approach. His remarks in the introduction that he intends to use clear language and to avoid confusing diagrams are clearly passing shots at the technical complexity of his rival's work. Along with Pozzo's treatise, the present work was among the most widely employed by Jesuit (and not just Jesuit) German architects in the early 18th century. Most of the 150 full-page plates provide simple geometrical exercises for rendering columns, entablatures and room interiors, as well as curved surfaces such as casement arches, spiral staircases, and groin-vault ceilings. Similar lessons follow for smaller objects-beds, chairs, swinging cupboard doors-in addition to shadows and human figures. Numerous reissues and translations of the Perspectiva -in France in 1651 and 1663, in England in 1672 and 1698, and the present translation by the Bavarian Jesuit Johann Rembold, a full 70 years after its first printing-suggest that its facility as a reference far outlived its relevance as a polemic. Jean Dubreuil (1602-1670), a Jesuit, lived and worked in Paris. OCLC: Michigan, NYPL, Getty, Penn; also in Vagnetti (EIIIb32).

[Attributes: First Edition]

Obra rara, desconocida a Nicolás Antonio. Procedencia: 1.
