Printed by I.L. [i.e.John Legat] for Richard Thrale, and are to be sold at his Shop at Pauls-Gate at the signe of the Crosse-Keyes, London. 1640 First edition. 4to. 6.75 x 9 inches. [xvi] + 516 + [12] pp. [8], A-3U4. Illustrated by three folding plates, including The Mapp of Canterbury [engraved by Hollar] and on verso of title, full page coat of arms of the See and vignettes, including royal devices, at heads of sections. Bound in recent full speckled calf, gilt; spine with raised bands in compartments and gilt tooling; early ink ownership inscription in Latin above title, 'Gul. Betham 1806, repeated in Greek. Some light pencil annotations and marks in text and small missing area to foot of one page, not affecting text. A fine copy of the first published history and topography of Canterbury. First edition of the earliest printed history and topography of Canterbury. It is based on original sources and some of these records are printed in the appendix, said to be the first published book to provide this. It describes both the city (according to its six wards) including the wall and gates, castle, river and cathedral, and its churches and suburbs and includes a list of mayors. William Somner (1598-1669) was born and educated in Canterbury, the son of the registrar of the court. His patron, Archbishop Laud, to whom the book is dedicated, appointed him registrar of the ecclesiastical courts and the lengthy description of the cathedral is thoroughly Laudian in tone. As an ardent royalist, Somner attempted to protect the cathedral and its muniments from the ravages of parliamentary soldiers. He published works in praise of Charles I after his execution and was briefly imprisoned in Deal Castle in 1659. After the Restoration, he was made Master of St John's Hospital in the city and the office of auditor of the cathedral. The first edition of the Antiquities provided the frame work for Battely (an equally famous antiquarian) to make additions and revisions for the second edition of 1703, which remains a cornerstone for the Canterbury collector, much used by all later historians. The William Betham of the inscription is possibly Sir William Betham (1779-1853), the antiquary, who may have used it for his research; he revised part of Camden's Britannia for a new edition of 1806, the year of the inscription. Betham spent much of his career in Dublin, working on the Irish records, and was appointed Ulster King of Arms in 1820. ESTC 121902 Smith DNB

Stefan Halikowski Smith
Creolization and Diaspora in the Portuguese Indies. Brill. 2011
|
BRILL, 2011. NEAR FINE Hardback, xiv, 456 pp. (32 illustrtions), This listing is a new book, a title currently in-print which we order directly and immediately from the publisher. Hardback-This book provides an original study of the sizeable Portuguese community in Ayutthaya, the chief river-state in Siam, during a period of apparent decline (1640-1720). Portuguese populations were displaced from their chief settlements like Melaka and Makassar, and attracted to the river-states of mainland South-East Asia by a protective model of kingship, hopes of international trade and the opportunity to harvest souls. A variety of sources will be used to shed light on the fortunes and make-up of this displaced, mixed-race 'tribe', which was largely independent of the matrices of Portuguese colonial power, and fared poorly alongside other foreign communities in this remarkably open, dynamic environment. Circumstances changed for the better after the National Revolution of 1688, when Portuguese started to fill many of the jobs at court and in commerce previously occupied by Frenchmen and northern Europeans. -The Social World of Ayutthaya, 1640-1720-8.

Parkinson, John
Theatrum Botanicum - The Theater of Plants or an Universall and Compleate Herball
|
Tho. Coates, London 1640 - [20], 1755pp, [3]. Full calf, raised bands, spine divided into seven panels, modern morocco title label to second panel. Re backed, re cornered and re edged, original blindstamped panelled calf covers retained, but heavily worn. Internally the engraved title has been laid down with some loss towards gutter affecting the image, the letterpress title has also been laid down, closing a couple of large tears, but with no loss. Light staining throughout, mainly to fore-edge, occasionally to top-edge, by Nnnn there is heavier staining to top corners until Hhhhh where it becomes lighter again, sporadic light spotting, a few small burn holes (not affecting text). A few small nicks and tears, slight loss to a few corners, tear to foot of C2, catching text but no loss, chip to head of Cc6, tear from foot of Hh2, catching text with no loss, tear and chip to margin of Ll6, Kkkk marginal repair with no loss, Ffffff3 tear to foot of page catching text but no loss, 7H has lost its bottom corner, repaired with lost part of index in neat manuscript, a few marginal repairs to index (not affecting text), final errata leaf also repaired to fore-edge margin (again not affecting text). Smith in Henrey notes that "This work and the herbal of Gerarde were the two main pillars of botany in England till the time of Ray, who indeed gave them fresh importance by his continual reference to their contents" (Henrey Pg 79). "Parkinson, John (1566/7-1650), apothecary and herbalist . Parkinson became so well respected in his profession that he was one of the five apothecaries who were consulted by the College of Physicians during the compilation of the first Pharmacopoeia Londinensis . Parkinson's second work, which occupied him for many years, was Theatrum botanicum (1640), with more than 1700 pages. This described some 3800 plants and showed his extensive reading of the period's authorities; of particular value was the almost entire incorporation of Caspar Bauhin's Pinax, for its synonyms. Parkinson divided plants into seventeen 'tribes', based partly on their medicinal qualities and partly on habitat. William How in 1655 roundly accused him of plagiarizing the work of Matthias L'Obel, but Parkinson had acknowledged his debt to him, and as one historian wrote, 'He has taken very little, for the simple reason that very little was worth taking' (Raven, 268). Certainly John Ray did not despise the work, for he termed it 'the most full and comprehensive book of that subject extant' (Raven, 272), and frequently quoted from it" (ODNB). Additional engraved title, circa 2714 woodcuts to the text, the largest of the English herbals. Henrey 286, Pritzel 6934, Arents 212, Wellcome I:4833 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Epictetus, Arrian and] Simplicius of Cilicia
Commentarius In Enchiridion Epictetus, Ex Libris veteribus emandatus. Cum Versione Hieronymi Wolfii Animadversionibus, et Notis Quibus Philosophia Stoica passim explicatur, & illustratur [TOGETHER WITH] Cl. Salmasii. Notae et Animadversiones in Epictetum et Simplicium [TOGETHER WITH] Johanne Elichmanno. Tabula Cebetis Graece, Arabice, Latine. Item [and] Aurea Carmina Pythagorae, Cum paraphrasi Arabica
|
Four works bound as one (Simplicius Commentary on Epictetus Enchiridion, or compilation of practical precepts; Claude Saumaise, Commentary on Epictetus and Simplicius; parallel Greek, Latin, and Arabic texts arranged by Johan Elichman of the Tabula of Cebes (Anon.) together with the Aurea Carmina of Pythagorus). Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden]: Johannis Maire, 1640 ([xviii], 332, index; 329, indices; [xxxii], 88; 15). Quarto (20 cm.) in modern calf, titles to spine, five raised bands; new endpapers, headbands. Epictetus (c. 55- 135) was the Stoic philosopher and teacher concerned with questions of ethics (as in, how to live ones life), and the Enchiridion, a collection of his teachings and sayings, was compiled and preserved by his student Arrian. Simplicius of Cilicia (c. 490- 560), said to be one of the last neo-Platonists, also wrote commentaries on Aristotle. Claude Saumaise (1588- 1653) was professor at Leiden and something of an academic controversialist for hire, as witness his duel with Milton over the rights of monarchs (and Charles II in particular). He evidently never was at a loss for words (in any of several languages) and as another description, citing Brunet, notes much given to commentaire prolixe. An attractive copy bound in suitably plain seventeenth century fashion, a few period ms. notes in Greek.

Jansson
Le Maine
|
1640 - This is an excellent example of cartography, from the premier lineage of map makers. Janson was an articulate engraver and cartographer with a fine aesthetic appeal. Looking at the manner in which mountains and forests were portrayed, we see the hand of a master. Here we see fine crisp lines, as well as softer curving detail. This map shows a northern section of France, giving us towns, rivers, as well as topography. An attractive and rare map
