MERCATOR, Gerard

Duisberg Jodocus Hondius 1636 Map. Black and white engraving. Image measures 14" x 15.75". unbound very good Map of the Danish island of Fyn, as well as Langeland and Ærø. English text on back describes the area. From the "Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas sive Cosmographicae" (Mercator-Hondius Atlas). Plate was originally made by Mercator and later added to by Hondius. Some aging around margins and minor chipping to left edge and corners.Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Although this requires some distortion, it was of great use for navigators, and is historically important, as it is still the most commonly used projection today.

Lievi fioriture e ingiallimenti. Dedicatoria dell'Edit. a Toldo Constantino. Lione, 1634].

Cockle, A Bibliography of Military Books up to 1642, 645. - Haag, La France protestante, VIII, 496.

- London (recte Amsterdam?), iuxta exemplar W. Stanesbeii pro R. Meighen, 1636. 12 Bl., 61 S., 1 Bl. weiß, 504 S. mit 2 ganzseitigen gestochenen Karten, 2 ganzseitigen Holzschnitten u. einigen Münzabbildungen. Cat. |
[Nicolaes van Ravesteyn] [ca 1636], [Amsterdam] - Contemporary vellum over boards (some soiling; minor cracking to front hinge but very sound) 4to . FIRST DUTCH EDITION of "Von dem dreifachen Leben des Menschen" dealing with the will and soul which is considered one of Jakob Böhme's major works (cf. New Schaff-Herzog, II, p. 210). The German edition first appeared in 1620. An important and rare edition of this work by the famous German mystic, Jakob Böhme (1575-1624), who lived as a master shoemaker while writing about his visions and spiritual revelations. Later in life he published a series of mystical works which had a great influence on later writers on free will, the human soul and division of mind and body. His influece on later English visionary writers is especially noteworthy. The present work, whose uniform Dutch title is "Hooge ende diepe Gronden van't drievoudigh leven des Menschen", was published without an imprint but Buddecke suggests that the work was printed in 1636 at Amsterdam by Nicolaes Ravesteyn. The OCLC locates only a copy at Yale and the present copy (Crozier-Colgate Library) in the United States and four additional copies in the Netherlands [8], 424 pp. With engraved title-page by S. Savery after P.v. Bon. Full-page woodcut diagram in text. Book plate of Crozer Theological Seminary (at Colgate: deaccessioned). Several gift inscriptions from the Wetherill family on front paste-down. Some light dampstains, minor handsoiling and foxing. § Buddecke 2, 17. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

First edition of this illuminating perspective on an early 17th-century study of divination, witchcraft, sorcery and Celtic legends-with one of the age's earliest arguments for admitting Jews into England. "One of the best learned" ministers of his time, Scottish cleric John Weemes (also Weemse or Wemyss) authored of a number of distinguished works (DNB). In this Treatise of the Foure Degenerate Sonnes, Weemes' final work, he offers valuable insight into early 17th century beliefs such as Christian views on Judaism, atheism, medieval humours, Celtic legends, fear of the devil, idolatry, sorcery, divination and witchcraft. In addition, with Jews then forbidden to settle in England, "the prominence Weemes gave to Hebrew and to Jewish writings. made him one of the pioneers in Scotland of the study of Jewish life and learning" (Dictionary of the Scottish Church, 861). By suggesting herein that "it is not part of religion to compell a man to religion" (339), Weemes is seen as one of the first Christian writers of the age to present a careful, if highly qualified, argument "in favor of Jews being allowed to settle in a Christian country. [that] did in some measure at least influence those in favor of the return of Jews to England in 1655-6" (Bowman, Jewish Quarterly). With engraved initials, head- and tailpieces. Errata leaf at rear. STC 25218. Also found included as volume IV of Weemes' Works, but stands alone as a separate study (see STC 25208 or 25209). OCLC lists seven copies. Early owner inscription. Minor occasional wormholing, one leaf with tiny holes slightly affecting text (B8b2), faint marginal dampstaining to "Table" leaf, mild edge-wear to preliminary leaves, title page fore-edge trimmed; slight edge-wear to contemporary calf. An extremely good copy of this scarce, important work. [Attributes: First Edition]

AUVRAY (Jean)
Le Banquet des Muses ou les Divers Satires du Sieur Auvray.
|
Rouen, David Ferrand, 1636. Frère I, 56; Arbour, 15722; Viollet-Le-Duc I, 411; Nourry, Poètes français (1929), n°215; Lachèvre, Poésies libres, 82.

MEIGHEN LONDRA 1636 - In 8°, pp. 24, 61, 1, 504. Legatura in mezza pergamena, con angoli ('900s bound in half vellum, covers in marbled paper). Piatti in carta marmorata. Frontespizio stampato a due colori: rosso e nero (Titlepage printed in red and black). For the most part the copies are bound in the follow order: 61, 1, 24, 504; this copy is bound 24, 61, 1, 504. Obviously the work is absolutely complete). Numerosi capilettera xilografati nel testo (many initial letters in woodcut). Diverse incisioni a piena pagina, nel testo, più alcune incisioni raffiguranti monete (Full page engravings and any little prints representing coins).
