"Quand il se croit suffisamment informé, il rédige, soit en français soit en latin, l'un des traités de cette somme volumineuse, et parfois il l'édite à part, se réservant le droit d'y ajouter des variantes dans les exemplaires ultérieurs.(.) L'Harmonie Universelle répudie la physique de la qualité et affirme que le son n'est que mouvement." (Lenoble, p. 44). FIRST EDITION of this collection of biographies of famous members of the Augustian order illustrated with thirty beautiful full-page portraits engraved by Cornelius Galle after the drawings of Jacque Francquart. The splendid title-page was designed Peter Paul Rubes (see: Corpus Rubiniarum p. 68, ill, 23). The portraits include Aurelius Augustinus, Thomas de Villanova, Bonaventura Patavinus, Albertus Patavinus, Paulus Venetus, Onophrius Panvinius, Cornelius de Bye, Joannes Puteanus and others. The author, Corneille de Corte (Curtius: 1590?-1638), was an Augustinian monk. The present example of Rubens title-page production is among the "almost one third of his total output in this category of works" that wasn't found for Julius S. Helds extensive exhibition catalogue. Rubens and the Book, Title Pages by Peter Paul Rubens (Williamstown, MA: 1977) [16], 288 pp. With engraved title-page after Peter Paul Rubens design and 30 full-page engraved portraits by Cornelius Galle after Francquart. A superb facsimile. One of only 125 copies issued as part of a highly important set along with 49 similar works. [ Never before sold separately - only previously sold as part of complete sets to major world libraries ]. * the texts in the series HISTORIC ACCOUNTING LITERATURE expound and develop the art of book-keeping in the 350 years after Pacioli's seminal Summa de Arithmetica. They show how patterns and conventions were established, and how the following generations built on them in turn. As this body of knowledge accumulated, it became the framework for commercial dealings. Most of these works were intended for the instruction of students and apprentices, or for the use of book-keepers and merchants. The original copies are in the library of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in London, whose holdings in the fields of book-keeping and accountancy are the finest in the world. This is the first so-called Cloppenburgh editions which was a competive edition with new engraved maps in a larger format. Most of the maps were engraved by Pieter van den Keere. The Cloppenburgh edition was continued for a couple of years but seems to have been suppressed after 1636 ... . This is another Cloppenburgh edition, now with Latin text. The maps from the Appendix have been incorporated. The title-page is followed by a dedication to Prince Frederik Hendrik, dated 1632 and signed by Johannes Cloppenburgh. The previous binding had wooden boards which were attacked by a wood boring insect. As a result the front edge of the first and last few pages have four bore marks going into the book half a centimetre. The edges of the pages have been darkened from wood or coal soot. (64) lvs. Rare early edition of a mystic chapbook, teaching how to reach, by abstinence and the forsaking of all wordly longings, the ultimate love of God and men, and finally true Saintliness. The chapbook was based on "Spill de la vida religiosa" by Miguel Comolado, first published in Spanish, in 1515. The undated privilege on verso title here is granted to Jan van Waesbergen, who had printed the book at Antwerp in 1566 and 1588, and also at Rotterdam in 1590, and 1597. Very popular in the Catholic Southern Netherlands, the book also is found in the Protestant Northern Netherlands, both Waller and Muller listing an edition at Dordrecht by Symon onder de Linden, from about 1675. The book is mainly printed in Gothic type. Good copy.- (First lvs. sl. frayed at outer margin caused by the shortness of the vellum wrappers; sl. waterst.). This edition not found recorded cf. Plaquette inconnue relatant la victoire des Français sur les Espagnols à Tornavento sur la rivière Tessin près de Milan le 22 juin 1636 pendant la guerre de Trente Ans. Charles, duc de Créquy (1578-1638), à la tête de l'armée franco-savoyarde, avait franchi le Pô en 1635 pour tenter d'envahir le Milanais. Contrairement au récit cocardier de ce bulletin de propagande la bataille, très meurtrière, fut longtemps indécise et les Franco-Savoyards ne remportèrent à Tornavento qu'une victoire tactique. Les opérations piétinèrent ensuite et les Espagnols purent reprendre l'initiative avec succès dès 1637. Seul exemplaire connu de ce bulletin

Elenca inoltre vari artisti fiorentini da Giotto a Leonardo con con rilevanti note e in questa seconda edizione vi è aggiunto il catalogo di 500 famiglie nobili. A pag. 48 parla della "bontà del vino detto trebbiano". Quelques corrections à l'encre remplaçant "Floris" par "Page" et supprimant une indication de scène où l'on prend le menton d'une jeune personne… Sommarville partage le privilège avec Toussaint Quinet. Impressa en Valanson (Madrid?), por Jacome Corifio, 1636. - in-4. 99ff. (dont 98 numérotés). (1f.blanc). Plein vélin souple de l'époque. Edition Originale de cet ouvrage curieux de Juan de Quiñones, magistrat madrilène de la cour de Philippe IV. Ce violent réquisitoire contre les Français est présenté sous la forme d'un traité historique qui disserte sur les m?urs françaises, les relations de l'Espagne et de la France depuis le 14e siècle, ainsi que sur la supposée alliance des Français avec les Turcs pendant le siècle d'or. C'est un livre obscur à plusieurs égards. D'une part, le lieu d'impression et le nom de l'imprimeur ne sont répertoriés nulle part et paraissent avoir été inventés. D'autre part, certaines sources attribuent l'ouvrage au médecin hollandais Guillaume Van Den Bossche, mais cette hypothèse semble être erronée et le nom de Vandevoy indiqué au titre paraît n'être qu'une fantaisie. L'ouvrage contient deux curieuses gravures à l'eau forte de Francisco Navarro, graveur espagnol au sujet duquel Bénézit indique qu'on connaît de lui "des planches d'armoiries parues en 1632 à Madrid et le titre pour un ouvrage militaire publié en 1642. Il a également gravé des titres pour divers ouvrages d'architecture et des portraits d'Horace, Perse et Juvénal". Juan de Quiñones a laissé plusieurs ouvrages remarquables, tous écrits en espagnol, parmi lesquels un traité sur les sauterelles (1620), un discours contre les gitans (1631), une relation des éruptions du Vésuve (1632) et un curieux traité de minéralogie sur le charbon (1634). Le présent volume est une véritable rareté. Nous n'avons pu en localiser qu'un seul exemplaire dans les collections américaines (à l'Hispanic Society of America de New York, cf. N.U.C.) et seulement deux exemplaires dans les bibliothèques publiques espagnoles (Biblioteca Nacional et Biblioteca de Oviedo). Très bon exemplaire dans son vélin d'origine. Palau, 245389. Light soiling, spine somewhat darkened, corners and spine ends bumped, vellum just beginiing to crack through pastedowns, text block just beginning to detach, but still quite secure, a few gatherings slightly loose. Title page printed in red and black. Large woodcut printer device to title page, woodcut head-pieces, tail-pieces and decorated initials. Ex-library. Bookplate to front pastedown, small stamps and markings to endleaves and verso of title page. A solid copy. * Third edition, and the final authorial edition. With indexes. Huber was a well-known Dutch jurist and professor at the Universities of Franeker, Utrecht and Leyden. He was also a judge in Friesland and the author of numerous legal works on Roman and Roman-Dutch law. He was as important in his day as Grotius, and it remains influential in South African law. First published in 1664, Digressiones Justinianeae went through eight editions, the final in 1721. More an essay collection than a treatise, it collects his thoughts on a variety of Roman law topics. He also discusses legal pedagogy and the work of his contemporaries and near-contemporaries, such as Grotius and Hobbes. These latter sections are especially interesting because they show what a learned contemporary thought of their work when it was new. They are similar in many regards to reviews in learned journals or publications like the New York Review of Books. Dekkers, Bibliotheca Belgica Juridica 86 (4).

The Cloppenburgh edition was continued for a couple of years but seems to have been suppressed after 1636 ... . This is another Cloppenburgh edition, now with Latin text. The maps from the Appendix have been incorporated. The title-page is followed by a dedication to Prince Frederik Hendrik, dated 1632 and signed by Johannes Cloppenburgh. Francesco Barberini; seguono alcuni componimenti poetici dedicati a Kircher scritti in siriaco, arabo, samaritano, armeno, copto, ebraico, etiopico, tutti tradotti in latino. Prima edizione della prima grammatica copta scritta in Occidente e primo libro in cui compaiono caratteri copti. Opera prima del padre gesuita A. Kircher (1601-1680), mente di grandissima erudizione, rimasta per secoli lo strumento base per gli studiosi di questa lingua e civiltà. Egli fu un precursore degli studi di Champollion sui geroglifici egizi e giustamente considerò essere il Copto una delle tarde vestigia dell'antico Egitto. E' suddivisa in 9 dissertazioni, seguite da una piccola grammatica (divisa in 6 parti) e termina con il "Pater Noster" e "L'Ave Maria" in copto ed in latino. Nel volume vi sono varie piccole fig. silogr. ed una grande (a pag. 270), ma soprattutto quasi ad ogni pagina s'incontrano e si mischiano i caratteri di lingue differenti, dando origine ad uno spécimen poliglotta della tipografia della "Congregatio de Propaganda Fide" (greco, ebraico, armeno, siriaco, arabo…). Curioso studio, ricco di iscrizioni siro-cinesi, di Si-Ngan Fou, di notizie riguardanti il viaggio dei Copti in Estremo Oriente etc. Opera di grande importanza filologica, assai rara. Rear wrapper lacking, [later] front blank defective at the upper front corner, sheets foxed and stained, a good copy. Rare. The imprint for the _Sentence_, which is bound first, is A Paris: Par P. Mettayer, A. Estiene, & P. Rocolet, Imprimeurs ordinaires du Roy, 1636. Page 7 of the _Sentence_ has the printed signature "Musnier," possibly either Francois or Andre Musnier, both of whom were writing on political subjects in the 1630s. Neither OCLC nor the BN ascribe an author to either pamphlet. OCLC records only 2 copies of _Le Nonce_, at Syracuse and the Newberry Library, and none of the _Sentence_. The Bibliotheque National Nr. for the _Sentence_ is FRBNF33734096; the BN has a number of copies of _Le Nonce_. 1.0 ounces = 28 grams. 6.5 x 4.2 x 0.1 inches = 16.3 x 10.5 x 0.2cm. .
