In Roma, appresso Giacomo Facciotti, 1636, in-4, leg. coeva in pieno marocchino rosso-bruno, piattiinquadrati da due cornici in oro a doppio filo congiunte agli angoli, piccolo stemma (sempre in oro, sbiadito) al centro dello specchio del piatto anteriore (a secco su quello psteriore), dorso a 5 nervi con titolo e filetti dorati (manca gran parte dello scomparto inferiore, qualche forellino di tarlo, consunzioni alle punte dei piatti), tagli dorati, pp. [10], 676, [32]. Con marca tipografica sul front. ed in fine. Qualche brunitura. Manca il frontespizio calcografico (è presente quello tipografico). Prima edizione.

Frontespizio stampato a due colori: rosso e nero (Titlepage printed in red and black). Le prime 24 pagine sono, per errore di legatura, seguite dalle 61 invece che dalle 504 (rare pagination version. For the most part the copies are bound in the follow order: 61, 1, 24, 504; this copy is bound 24, 61, 1, 504. Obviously the work is absolutely complete). Numerosi capilettera xilografati nel testo (many initial letters in woodcut). Diverse incisioni a piena pagina, nel testo, più alcune incisioni raffiguranti monete (Full page engravings and any little prints representing coins). Interessante edizione non comune di questa opera del Selden, il quale influenzò la cultura inglese del suo tempo e la sua fortuna fu registrata anche in America. J. Locke lo definì "dotto e giudizioso" e nel Settecento le opere di Selden furono lette dagli studiosi francesi Leclerc e Barbeyrac, dagli enciclopedisti Diderot e d’Alembert; in Germania da Pufendorf; in Italia da Vico, Maffei, Ansaldi e Finetti. Nel 1617 egli scrive Mare clausum pubblicato solo nel 1635 dopo ampie modifiche, in risposta al libro di Grozio Mare liberum. Mare clausum rappresentava un’astuta miscela di giusnaturalismo e storia, di ragione ed erudizione, di analisi etico-giuridiche e di realismo politico. Ottimo lo stato di conservazione (very good copy).

Le volume contient notamment ses importants écrits historiques sur le règne de Henri VII en Italie, dans lesquels apparaît particulièrement la pensée pré-humaniste de l’auteur. "This work represents an important advance toward the developments in humanist historiography of the following century" (Bondanella). Mussato, qui occupa d’importantes fonctions publiques au cours de sa carrière, fut récompensé pour l’ensemble de son œuvre par la ville de Padoue qui le consacra lauréat en 1315. “Première édition de cet ouvrage intéressant. FIRST EDITION of this collection of biographies of famous members of the Augustian order illustrated with thirty beautiful full-page portraits engraved by Cornelius Galle after the drawings of Jacque Francquart. The splendid title-page was designed Peter Paul Rubes (see: Corpus Rubiniarum p. 68, ill, 23). The portraits include Aurelius Augustinus, Thomas de Villanova, Bonaventura Patavinus, Albertus Patavinus, Paulus Venetus, Onophrius Panvinius, Cornelius de Bye, Joannes Puteanus and others. The author, Corneille de Corte (Curtius: 1590?-1638), was an Augustinian monk. The present example of Rubens title-page production is among the "almost one third of his total output in this category of works" that wasn't found for Julius S. Helds extensive exhibition catalogue. (24), 496, (8) pp. First edition of a book of proverbs by the well-known humanist author and poet Jan de Brune (1588-1658), a lawyer at Middelburg, and from 1649 "Raadspensionaris" van Zeeland. Proverbs were considered to contain in a nutshell all the wisdom of the human past, and therefore seen as an important means for education. In the present work De Brune collected thousands of proverbs, apart from the Dutch also from other languages, and added his own lines of verse to each of them, printed in Italics. Edition originale. Cette histoire, qui est essentiellement une histoire des saadiens, leur ascension, fondation de Taroudant, est reconnue depuis longtemps comme source de premier ordre. Non seulement pour sa valeur documentaire et narrative, car elle correspond au séjour de l'auteur pendant huit ans à Marrakech, Taroudant et Fez, mais aussi par ses descriptons. Elle fut écrite dit-il non pas tant sur les mémoires d'autrui que parce que j'aurai vu ce que je dirai". L'illustration comprend un beau titre-frontispice et un plan de campement de l'armée romaine, le tout gravé sur cuivre. La pensée et l'art militaire au XVIIe siècle. C'est l'ouvrage majeur du plus grand tacticien français de son temps. Le livre connut un très grand succès et fut maintes fois réédité jusqu'au milieu du XVIIIe siècle. Henri de Rohan, Huguenot de plume et d’épée (1570-1638), fut compagnon d’Henri IV, puis champion de la cause protestante et chef des armées de Venise avant de rentrer au service du roi et de Richelieu. Il acheva sa carrière militaire par une éclatante campagne dans la Valteline, qui servira longtemps de modèle pour la guerre en montagne, mais également par un désastre politique, puisque le traité qu’il avait conclu avec les Grisons sera désavoué par le roi. Neuer Ppbd (gleichmäßig leicht gebräunt, teilw. mit schwacher Nässespur u. unaufgeschnitten, letztes Bl. mit kl. Fehlstelle u. Verlust einzelner Buchstaben). Erste (einzige) Ausgabe.- Der aus dem sächsischen Erzgebirge stammende Sigismund Scherertz war zunächst evangelischer Pastor in Prag gewesen. Nach dem Ausbruch des 30jährigen Krieges und der Niederlage des "Winterkönigs" in der Schlacht am Weißen Berg kam er als Flüchtling nach Lüneburg. Von Herzog August hoch geschätzt, wurde er Pastor an St. Lamberti, später auch Superintendent. Für die von schweren Kriegsprüfungen und privatem Leid heimgesuchten Menschen - ihm selbst starben sieben Kinder an der Pest - verfasste er zahlreiche Trost- und Erbauungsschriften.- Vgl. A guide to princely behavior, first issued by Elzevier the year before. The Dutch family of Elzevier (Elzevir; Elsevier) were the foremost printers of their time. They produced a vast variety of well printed scholarly and popular books; many in a very small handy format. Louis Elzevier, the founder of the firm, produced his first book in Leiden in 1583. Plaquette inconnue relatant la victoire des Français sur les Espagnols à Tornavento sur la rivière Tessin près de Milan le 22 juin 1636 pendant la guerre de Trente Ans. Charles, duc de Créquy (1578-1638), à la tête de l'armée franco-savoyarde, avait franchi le Pô en 1635 pour tenter d'envahir le Milanais. Contrairement au récit cocardier de ce bulletin de propagande la bataille, très meurtrière, fut longtemps indécise et les Franco-Savoyards ne remportèrent à Tornavento qu'une victoire tactique. Les opérations piétinèrent ensuite et les Espagnols purent reprendre l'initiative avec succès dès 1637. Seul exemplaire connu de ce bulletin

FIRST DUTCH EDITION of "Von dem dreifachen Leben des Menschen" dealing with the will and soul which is considered one of Jakob Böhme's major works (cf. New Schaff-Herzog, II, p. 210). The German edition first appeared in 1620. An important and rare edition of this work by the famous German mystic, Jakob Böhme (1575-1624), who lived as a master shoemaker while writing about his visions and spiritual revelations. Later in life he published a series of mystical works which had a great influence on later writers on free will, the human soul and division of mind and body. His influece on later English visionary writers is especially noteworthy. The present work, whose uniform Dutch title is "Hooge ende diepe Gronden van't drievoudigh leven des Menschen", was published without an imprint but Buddecke suggests that the work was printed in 1636 at Amsterdam by Nicolaes Ravesteyn. The OCLC locates only a copy at Yale and the present copy (Crozier-Colgate Library) in the United States and four additional copies in the Netherlands [8], 424 pp. With engraved title-page by S. Savery after P.v. Bon. Full-page woodcut diagram in text. Book plate of Crozer Theological Seminary (at Colgate: deaccessioned). He died in 1638 from a wound received at Rheinfelden while serving under Bernard of Saxe-Weimar. Bound in period full vellum. A wide margin copy. Light damp stains to a few leaves. Very good.

The splendid title-page was designed Peter Paul Rubes (see: Corpus Rubiniarum p. 68, ill, 23). The portraits include Aurelius Augustinus, Thomas de Villanova, Bonaventura Patavinus, Albertus Patavinus, Paulus Venetus, Onophrius Panvinius, Cornelius de Bye, Joannes Puteanus and others. The author, Corneille de Corte (Curtius: 1590?-1638), was an Augustinian monk. The present example of Rubens title-page production is among the "almost one third of his total output in this category of works" that wasn't found for Julius S. Helds extensive exhibition catalogue. A complete copy with the engraved portrait and engraved title page, the latter one being untrimmed and with the margins folded inwards to tuck inside the book. Some slight marginal worming to the last half of the book, on a doezen or so leaves occurring in the text. The pastedown leaves have become unattached from the boards but are intact. Un'opera invero monumentale, di altissimo interesse, purtroppo mancante del quinto ed ultimo tomo ma di tale importanza da dover essere presentata. Ogni volume e' ovviamente completo in se stesso ed afferente l'epoca riportata al frontespizio. In piu' che bello stato, scevro da mancanze e mende appariscenti e da bruniture tipiche del periodo. Sempre disponibile ad acquisire il volume mancante. Insieme raro a reperirsi.

(40), 411, (43) pp.. First edition by Daniel Heinsius of Virgil's works, beautiful produced by the Elzevirs in their famous duodecimo format, and here bound in finely gilt red morocco. A real masterpiece of typography the book was eagerly sought after by collectors and bibliographers from an early date. Reprinted twice under the same date, the first edition, first issue, is the only one to have two pages printed in red, one with a fragment of a letter to August, preceeding the Bucolics, and the other page with a dedication in verse to the Aeneid. Daniel Heinsius dedicated his Virgil-edition to his son Nicolas, and although his son later, as well as other scholars, like Harles and Heyne, found much to criticize in Heinsius' edition, the book still is highly valued for its rarity and beauty. "Gerard is perhaps the best remembered of all the English herbalists." (Garrison & Morton). A barber surgeon, he supervised the gardens of Lord Burleigh and Theobolds and kept his own famous garden in Holborn for twenty years, for which he issued a list of plants cultivated, the first complete catalogue ever published of the contents of a single garden. According to Arber and the Osler catalogue, Gerard used as the basis of his herbal a translation of Dodoens begun by Robert Priest, but without any acknowledgment, while according to William T.Stearn (DSB), "to what extent Gerard was indebted to Priest's work is quite uncertain..the Herball as published..was on the whole so massive a task that it seems charitable to credit [Gerard] with the whole. It remains a valuable source of information about the plants available in western European gardens at the end of the sixteenth century and about the Latin and vernacular names then applied to them." The 1597 edition was illustrated mainly with woodblocks obtained by the publisher Norton from Nikolaus Bassée of Frankfurt, who had used them in the German herbal of Tabernaemontanus (Theodorus of Bergzabern), 1588-91. Several other cuts were added by Gerard, notably one which is considered to be the earliest depiction of the potato, which Gerard believed was native to Virginia. In his revised edition, Johnson enlarged the text to include a total of 2850 plants, added a comprehensive historical introduction, "corrected many of Gerard's more gullible errors, and improved the accuracy of the illustrations by using Plantin's woodcuts." (Hunt). Gerard's herbal is listed in European Americana because it includes numerous descriptions and illustrations of American plants, including the previously mentioned potato. STC 11752.
