Paris, Jean Houzé, 1636 In-4 de (7) ff., 388 pp., mal num. 390, (2) ff., vélin ivoire de l'époque. Edition originale. Cockle, A Bibliography of Military Books up to 1642, 645. - Haag, La France protestante, VIII, 496.

Album I: title + engraved introduction text (non numbered plate) + portrait of Vincenzo (numbered plate 2) + 150 plates numbered 3 - 152 + 8 plates (by Bloemaert, interpretations of paintings by Titian, Del Sarto a.o.). Album II: title + engraved introduction text (n.n.p.) + portrait of Iosephus G. (plate numbered 3) + 165 plates numbered 4-168 (some folding). Complete. Contemporary half leather with eggshell marbled boards. Binding worn but technically sound. Title pages a bit soiled and foxed, all other plates fine, untrimmed copy. Fine copy of an extraordinary important book in the history of European art. It is a collection of engraved plates illustrating the art collection of the Giustiniani family kept in their still extant palace in Rome. They amassed over 600 Roman & Greek statues, bas reliefs etc. It was the foremost collection in early baroque Europe and it was Vincenzo's idea to illustrate this collection with this ''catalogue'' - the first illustrated art collection catalogue ever . The German artist Sandrart was commissioned to supervise the undertaking for which he engaged the foremost artists of his time, many of them non-Italian (see those mentioned in the title). When in 1983 a large part of the original plates were rediscovered in Genoa it was decided to place them in a purposely founded institute in Rome . This gave an enormous impulse to the study of t his collection whose remains were dispersed in the 18th and 19th century and found a place in all the main art collections of the world. §.

Blank first leaf is here missing, neat pencil note on back of titlepage Sandell & Smith 7/6/73, minor edge browning, bottom margin of Ff2 torn off with no loss of text, marginal ink stain to last 8 leaves. *Wither's translation of Nemisius' 4th century AD work on the Nature of Man. Here he explains the classical Greek view of nature, of philosopy, of mental processes & physiology. In an early passage on the circulation of blood he describes on pp409-10 the veins & arteries: "These. accompany one another, and receive profit and assistance each from the other. therefore it is not possible to finde either an artery altogether voide of a thin kinde of blood; or a veine without spirits", going on to the pumping of the heart and the opening and contracting of the arteries "it sucks and draws a thin kinde of blood, from the veines that are neare unto it." He tries to map mental faculties, feelings & sensory perception to parts of the ventricles of the human brain, the third being the region of man's intellect. An interesting fusion of Hellenistic thought & medical theory bent to integrate with Christian theology. 1 volume.

BÖHME, Jakob
Hooge ende diepe Gronden van't drievoudigh leven des Menschen] Het derde Boeck des Auterus Zynde Hooge ende diepe Gronden van't drievoudigh leven des Menschen. Door Iacob Böhmen, anders Teutonicus genaemt, beschreven anno 1620
|
[Nicolaes van Ravesteyn] [ca 1636], [Amsterdam] - Contemporary vellum over boards (some soiling; minor cracking to front hinge but very sound) 4to . FIRST DUTCH EDITION of "Von dem dreifachen Leben des Menschen" dealing with the will and soul which is considered one of Jakob Böhme's major works (cf. New Schaff-Herzog, II, p. 210). The German edition first appeared in 1620. An important and rare edition of this work by the famous German mystic, Jakob Böhme (1575-1624), who lived as a master shoemaker while writing about his visions and spiritual revelations. Later in life he published a series of mystical works which had a great influence on later writers on free will, the human soul and division of mind and body. His influece on later English visionary writers is especially noteworthy. The present work, whose uniform Dutch title is "Hooge ende diepe Gronden van't drievoudigh leven des Menschen", was published without an imprint but Buddecke suggests that the work was printed in 1636 at Amsterdam by Nicolaes Ravesteyn. Cui accessit De prisca danorum poesi dissertatio. Köpenhamn,, Melchior Martzan, 1636. 4:o. (20),+ 185, 185-249,+ (6) s. Fjärde bladet med delförlust av kustod. Fuktrand inledningsvis.

Hayward, John.:
The Life and Raigne of King Edward the Sixt. With the beginning of the Raigne of Queene Elizabeth
|
Partridge, London 1636 2nd edition. 12mo, bound in full plain calf, of indeterminate age - I would estimate this to be early 18thc but it is quite possibly 17thc. [24], 431. [3], 433-494, [8]. A complete copy with the engraved portrait and engraved title page, the latter one being untrimmed and with the margins folded inwards to tuck inside the book. Some slight marginal worming to the last half of the book, on a doezen or so leaves occurring in the text. The pastedown leaves have become unattached from the boards but are intact. This is a Good unsophisticated complete copy of a scarce work. Superior to the first edition which which contained less than half the content of this edition.

Paulus Aertsz Van Ravensteyn, Leyden. 1636 - N B the book is being offered in a restored condition, but this will not happen until I receive a firm order with a deposit of R5000. The binding is loose and will have to be re-sewn, most of the fore-edges have been trimmed and in some instances the text of the marginal notes have been trimmed slightly. Other pages especially the prelims are frittered and torn as are the fore-edges where un-trimmed. There are no maps/ illustrations in this edition. At the rear, the Appocrypha is water stained at the top margin affecting text. In the rest of the book most pages are unfoxed but browning with age. There were no brass cnr pieces nor clasps. The spine is missing a piece 25x116mm and the covers are very tender. All dust and dead bodies have been removed. There are some pencil annotations in a very old hand on the first title p. Barens' signature is placed on the "Acte van Authorisatie" and dated 1637 so as to make it clear that this was an official signature. MISSING FROM "Het I I I Boek der Machabeen is text from vj Capittel verse 33 onwards to the end. My other Staten Bijbel goes to vij Capitel verse 19 so it is unlikely that more than a single sheet is missing in spite of the fact that modern English Appocryphae continue to Chap XV verse 39, which I surmise is a change in versification. There is a little geneaology on some blank pages from the 1800s. Please ask for a quote to a) preserve the annotarions & strip and wash the pages b) re-size the tattered pages.c) re-sew the book, e) insert new end-papers f) restore the missing leather and treat. Since no-one is likely to read the book, it seems to me that an exterior restoration would be fine, but someone else might like a complete interior cleaning and restoration, which would be impossible once the book has been re-bound. Expect extra postage - probably 4 kgs. Please feel free to ask an independant expert to evaluate the book since photographs will give you no idea of what needs to be done.
|
Adventures de Thyrsis. Tragi-comédie pastorale par l'incogneu. Paris: Pierre Des-Hayes, 1636. Five acts in verse. Priv. 25 July, Achevé 31 October 1636. Original edition. Soleinne 1179 citing the 1639 edition "Très-rare." 12mo. Blue morocco by M. Godillot. Clean copy, a few faded dampstains. 1f title; 2p extrait; 2p Av lecteur; 6p argument; 96p text. Collation: á4, [l] é1; A-M4. [é1 Av lecteur bound before Argument]. Set near the Ladon in Arcadia, this pastoral finds three sets of lovers, each confronting unrequited love. Their states are ultimately corrected through a beneficent force, the kindly magician Philandre. The first lovers, Thyrsis and Sylvie, are separated by Thrysis' desire to go to Paris to become part of Court. Rejected, Sylvie in the meantime is pursued by Amyntor at the urging of his avaricious uncle. Thyrsis and Sylvie are re-united. Amyntor, through the magic of Philandre, is restored to his former love, Doris, whom he had rejected. Finally, the third action finds Daphnis, who does not seem to like girls at all, falling in love with Daphnide who is finally persuaded by Philandre to have her suitor. Tragi-comédie pastorale is a rare genre which shows a synthesis of two forms on their way to becoming opera. Magic springs and a farcical satyr figure appear in this play. Lancaster, citing the 1639 Rouen edition, and who did not know of a Paris edition, seems to feel that the anonymous author is a provincial whose only strength is a natural and "pleasing type of primitivism." Cesar based its data on a reference in Maupoint (1733) p302, which has the play written in 1638 and published in Rouen by Jacques Cailloüe, 1639. Not in BnF; not in OCLC.
