Dionysius Longinus: (Langbaine, G., Ed. : )
[...] Liber De Grandiloquentia Sive Sublimi Dicendi Genere [...]
G.T. Academiae Typographus impensis Guil: Webb. Biblio, 1636. First edition thus. 12mo., pp. [xxxx], 176, [ii] 118. Missing folding table and index, as with many copies (cf. Madan). Edges speckled red, pages lightly browned, margins cut close but not affecting text, one or two spots of ink or light soil. Bound in contemporary speckled brown calf, later rebacked, gilt border to boards, blind-stamped decorations and red label with gilt to spine, edges a bit rubbed. Bookplate of Watkin Williams Esq. to upper pastedown. The text is an uncredited copy of Gabriel de Petra's 1612 edition, but with a new preface and extensive notes (the ?Notarum Auctarium'), which were the first published work of Gerard Langbaine (1609-1658). Dibdin mentions only the 1638 second edition, but calls Langbaine's ?Notarum Auctarium' ?a very acceptable acquisition? that ?has been always welcomed by lovers of Longinus. ? Langbaine was provost of Queen's College, Oxford from 1646. STC 16788. Madan I 192. Dibdin (4th edn. ) II 176. ESTC S103095.

Johannes Janssonius (1588-1664)
ÆTHIOPIA INFERIOR, vel EXTERIOR. Partes magis Septentrionales, quæ bic desiderantur, vide in tabula Ætiopiæ Superioris.
Johannes Janssonius, Amsterdam, after 1636 - This, Janssonius' first map of Southern Africa was first printed for his 1636 German edition of his Apendix Atlantis. Though it shows considerable knowledge of the coast of Africa it also shows how little was truly known of the interior. This copy was printed without the text or page number on the back of the map. Therefore it can be assumed that it was printed as a special order. Finely applied wash color. Slight spotting and discoloration of margin not encroaching on image. (Van der Krogt vol. I 8800:1,)

MERCATOR, Gerard
Fionia
Jodocus Hondius, Amsterdam 1636 - Map of the Danish island of Fyn, as well as Langeland and Ærø. English text on back describes the area. From the "Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas sive Cosmographicae" (Mercator-Hondius Atlas). Plate was originally made by Mercator and later added to by Hondius. Some aging around margins and minor chipping to left edge and corners.Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Although this requires some distortion, it was of great use for navigators, and is historically important, as it is still the most commonly used projection today. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 14" x 15.75".

BÖHME, Jakob
Hooge ende diepe Gronden van't drievoudigh leven des Menschen] Het derde Boeck des Auterus Zynde Hooge ende diepe Gronden van't drievoudigh leven des Menschen. Door Iacob Böhmen, anders Teutonicus genaemt, beschreven anno 1620
[Nicolaes van Ravesteyn] [ca 1636], [Amsterdam] - Contemporary vellum over boards (some soiling; minor cracking to front hinge but very sound) 4to . FIRST DUTCH EDITION of "Von dem dreifachen Leben des Menschen" dealing with the will and soul which is considered one of Jakob Böhme's major works (cf. New Schaff-Herzog, II, p. 210). The German edition first appeared in 1620. An important and rare edition of this work by the famous German mystic, Jakob Böhme (1575-1624), who lived as a master shoemaker while writing about his visions and spiritual revelations. Later in life he published a series of mystical works which had a great influence on later writers on free will, the human soul and division of mind and body. His influece on later English visionary writers is especially noteworthy. The present work, whose uniform Dutch title is "Hooge ende diepe Gronden van't drievoudigh leven des Menschen", was published without an imprint but Buddecke suggests that the work was printed in 1636 at Amsterdam by Nicolaes Ravesteyn. The OCLC locates only a copy at Yale and the present copy (Crozier-Colgate Library) in the United States and four additional copies in the Netherlands [8], 424 pp. With engraved title-page by S. Savery after P.v. Bon. Full-page woodcut diagram in text. Book plate of Crozer Theological Seminary (at Colgate: deaccessioned). Several gift inscriptions from the Wetherill family on front paste-down. Some light dampstains, minor handsoiling and foxing. § Buddecke 2, 17. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

En Madrid, Con Licencia por la viuda de Iuan Goncalez, 1636. - 4°. Mit kl. Titelhzschn. u. 1 Hzschn.-Init. 8 num. Bll. Mod. Pp. Nicht bei Halle Katalog 70, Newe Zeitungen (1929). Vgl. Hamann, Die Habsburger, S. 115 f.- Ausserordentlich seltene Flugschrift mit Berichten über Siegesfeiern in Brüssel zur Zeit des Dreissigjährigen Krieges. Über KVK kein Exemplar nachweisbar. Kardinalinfant Ferdinand (geb. 1609 in Madrid, gest. 1599 in Florenz, gest. Gerard Valk and Petrus Schenk
Nova Belgica Et Anglia Nova
Amsterdam: , (1636) c. 1694. This is an influential map showing Dutch holdings between New England and Virginia. Of particular importance, is the inclusion of the place names of "N. Amsterdam" and "Manbattes" (Manhattan), and, after De Laet’s rare map of 1630, is among the earliest appearances of these names on a map, according to Burden (p. 313). The Great Lakes area is represented by "Grand Lac". Details from New France south to present day North Carolina are shown and place names such as Pleymouth, Briston (Boston), Fort Orange, and Jamestown are identified. The map is attractively decorated: animals (bears, beavers, etc.) are on the map with ships in the Ocean, two compass roses, and a very attractive title cartouche flanked by two Indians. Upon the death of Janssonius' heirs, Jansson van Waesberge, the copperplate that produced this map along with others were acquired at auction by Schenk and Valk. The Janssonius' imprint on bottom right was then changed to "Amstelodami Apud G. Valk et P. Schenk". A latitude and longitude grid was also added as well. There is no text on the verso on the map. This is a gorgeous example in especially thick, rich original color.

The scope, detail and organization of this four-volume set is truly remarkable. The editor provides the reader with a limitless supply of reference material for teaching purposes, research, or historical perspective. This encyclopedia is an all-encompassing reference to meet the needs of the diverse number of disciplines dealing with microorganisms, including public health and agricultural and industrial microbiology, to name a few. To this end, the text is a huge success as the editor has provided a balanced compendium of topics in which no discipline is short-changed. The organization of this book is a strong feature. . The list of contributors is a veritable who's who in the field of microbiology, truly reflecting a world-wide consortium of authors. The complexity and array of subject matter covered in this book is (in the current vernacular) awesome Once the secret is out, this text should find itself on the office shelves of all professional microbiologists and in the library of every academic microbiology department throughout the world. Wm. Michael Dunner, Jr.m PhD, Case Western University in CHOICE As was noted in ARBA 94, entry 1636, about the 1st edition of the Encyclopedia of Microbiology, there really is nothing else comparable in either coverage or currency on the market. Now with an updated 2nd edition, this scholarly source of information on microorganisms continues to stand as the major survey of the field for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. . The 2nd edition appears to meet the basic criteria of an excellent encyclopedia in design, organization, usability and accuracy of data. CAMPANELLA, Tommaso (1568-1639).
      - 3 parts in 1 vol. 4to. With engraved vignette on title. [12] leaves, 273 p.; [2] leaves, 63 p., [4] leaves, p. 65-344, [2] p. Contemporary vellum with flaps (small stain on front cover). Paris, Dubray, 1636. First edition of this collective work with three tracts by Tommaso Campanella, best known for his utopian novel Città del Sole (1623). The first of the three works (Atheismus triumphatus) had been published heavily censored first at Rome in 1631. It is most important for Campanella's religious and philosophical beliefs. This second edition - although censored as well - attracted ibertines such as Gabriel Naudé and François de La Mothe le Vayer. Campanella was a disciple of the Greek sceptics, this school taught him that metaphysics is built on sand unless it rests on a theory of knowledge. In De gentilismo non retinendo Campanella criticizes a.o. Aristotle's philosophy of nature arguing that man has to discover nature by himself. His books were all placed on the Index after his death in 1639. - Ms. notes on first fly-leaf, first title lightly browned and dust-soiled, else a very good copy. - Contemporary vellum with flaps (small stain on front cover).
