Michaud XXXIX, 1-5 ; Brunet V, 267.

BHME, Jakob
Hooge ende diepe Gronden van't drievoudigh leven des Menschen] Het derde Boeck des Auterus Zynde Hooge ende diepe Gronden van't drievoudigh leven des Menschen. Door Iacob Bhmen, anders Teutonicus genaemt, beschreven anno 1620
|
[Nicolaes van Ravesteyn] [ca 1636], [Amsterdam] - Contemporary vellum over boards (some soiling; minor cracking to front hinge but very sound) 4to . FIRST DUTCH EDITION of "Von dem dreifachen Leben des Menschen" dealing with the will and soul which is considered one of Jakob Bhme's major works (cf. New Schaff-Herzog, II, p. 210). The German edition first appeared in 1620. An important and rare edition of this work by the famous German mystic, Jakob Bhme (1575-1624), who lived as a master shoemaker while writing about his visions and spiritual revelations. Later in life he published a series of mystical works which had a great influence on later writers on free will, the human soul and division of mind and body. His influece on later English visionary writers is especially noteworthy. The present work, whose uniform Dutch title is "Hooge ende diepe Gronden van't drievoudigh leven des Menschen", was published without an imprint but Buddecke suggests that the work was printed in 1636 at Amsterdam by Nicolaes Ravesteyn. The OCLC locates only a copy at Yale and the present copy (Crozier-Colgate Library) in the United States and four additional copies in the Netherlands [8], 424 pp. With engraved title-page by S. Savery after P.v. Bon. Full-page woodcut diagram in text. Book plate of Crozer Theological Seminary (at Colgate: deaccessioned). Several gift inscriptions from the Wetherill family on front paste-down. Some light dampstains, minor handsoiling and foxing. Buddecke 2, 17. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

PALISSY, Bernard
Le Moyen de devenir Riche, et la Maniere Veritable, par laquelle tous les hommes de la France pourront apprendre a multiplier & augmenter leurs thresors & possessions
|
8 p.l., 255 pp.; 8 p.l., 526 pp. Thickish 8vo, 19th cent. calf-backed marbled boards. Paris: R. Fouet, 1636. First collected edition of Palissy's two major books: the La Recepte Veritable (1st ed.: 1563) and Discours Admirables (1st ed.: 1580); the first editions are very rare and our 1636 edition is extremely uncommon. This is a book full of interest. In Recepte Veritable, "Palissy discussed a wide variety of topics, including agriculture (for which he proposed better methods for farming and for the use of fertilizers), geology (in which he touched upon the origin of salts, springs, precious stones, and rock formations), mines, and forestry. He also suggested plans for an ideal garden, to be decorated with his earthenware and with biblical quotations... "The second book, Discours admirables, probably incorporates Palissy's Paris lectures. It, like the earlier work, deals with an impressive array of subjects: agriculture, alchemy, botany, ceramics, embalming, engineering, geology, hydrology, medicine, metallurgy, meteorology, mineralogy, paleontology, philosophy, physics, toxicology, and zoology. The book is divided into several chapters, the first and longest of which is concerned with water. The others take up metals and their nature and generation; drugs; ice; different types of salts and their nature, effects, and methods of generation; characteristics of common and precious stones; clay and marl; and the potter's art... "Palissy's views on hydrology and paleontology, as expressed in the Discours, are of particular interest. He was one of the few men of his century to have a correct notion of the origins of rivers and streams, and he stated it forcefully, denying categorically that rivers can have any source other than rainfall... "Palissy discussed fossils extensively...Palissy was probably one of the first men in France to teach natural sciences from facts, specimens and demonstrations rather than hypotheses."-D.S.B., X, pp. 280-81. Fine copy. Adams, The Birth and Development of the Geological Sciences, pp. 90, 261, & 446-48. Duveen, p. 446-"A book of great importance in the history of chemistry and science generally"-(referring to the 1st ed. of the Discours). Geikie, The Founders of Geology, pp. 104 & 118. Partington, II, pp. 69-77. Zittel, pp. 18 & 132. .

MACHIAVELLI, Niccol.
Machiavels Discourses upon the first decade of T. Livius, translated out of the Italian. To which is added his Prince: with some marginal animadversions noting and taxing his errors. By E[dward]. D[acres]. The second edition much corrected & amended.
|
Dacress translation of the Discourses was first published in 1636, of the Prince in 1640. Among the political writings concernerning Machiavel these are both considered by far the most important translations into English at this time (Raab, English face of Machiavelli p. 96). In this combined edition the Prince follows the Discourses, beginning on p. [509] with its own title-page, Nicholas Machiavels Prince, London, Charles Harper & John Amery, 1673. Rightly or wrongly, both books have been read as articulating a doctrine of reason of state, and for that reason are considered classics of political realism (Brown, International relations in political thought p. 257).On a host of contested issues, [Machiavellis] works have invited diverse interpretations. At one extreme, Machiavelli is a teacher of evil, the originator of Machiavellism, an ethic of unscrupulous egoism in individual conduct. At the other, he is a moralist who satirizes this ethic from an essentially Christian standpoint. Between these extremes we find readings of Machiavelli as a theorist of the principles of practical wisdom required to establish, maintain, and strengthen a state. It is this last Machiavelli whose writings inspired both the tradition of reason of state connected with the rise of absolutism in Italy, France, and Germany and the anti-absolutist civic republican tradition in England and America. It is also this Machiavelli who, along with Hobbes, helped to generate the tradition of political realism in foreign policy. According to the realists, because each state must defend its own interests, there can be no moral limits on the competition of states for power. Reason of state, here, means that international relations is a realm in which the rules of civil society do not apply: rules guiding personal conduct or domestic politics are irrelevant to foreign policy (Brown p. 245).Bertelli & Innocenti XVII/68; Wing M135A. There is a more common variant with the names of the booksellers Thomas Burrell and William Hensman included in the imprint. London, Charles Harper & John Amery, 1674.

The Herball or General Historie of Plantes

Adam Islip, Joyce Norton and Richard Whitakers, London:: Adam Islip, Joyce Norton and Richard Whitakers,, 1636.. Handsome modern antique-style paneled calf, title on red morocco label; opening (!2-8) and final signatures (6y1-7b5), & 4L 3 &4 from another, slightly smaller copy; t.p. laid-down corner repair to last leaf with some text loss, occ. light dampstains, a few inner margins restored, lacks initial and final blanks (as usual).. Folio.. Engraved t.p. by John Payne (d.1647?), c2766 woodcuts in text, most HAND-COLORED. Third Edition (first: 1597), in effect a reissue or reprint of the preferred second edition of 1633, edited by London apothecary and botanist, Thomas Johnson.#11; "Gerard is perhaps the best remembered of all the English herbalists." (Garrison & Morton). A barber surgeon, he supervised the gardens of Lord Burleigh and Theobolds and kept his own famous garden in Holborn for twenty years, for which he issued a list of plants cultivated, the first complete catalogue ever published of the contents of a single garden. According to Arber and the Osler catalogue, Gerard used as the basis of his herbal a translation of Dodoens begun by Robert Priest, but without any acknowledgment, while according to William T.Stearn (DSB), "to what extent Gerard was indebted to Priest's work is quite uncertain..the Herball as published..was on the whole so massive a task that it seems charitable to credit [Gerard] with the whole. It remains a valuable source of information about the plants available in western European gardens at the end of the sixteenth century and about the Latin and vernacular names then applied to them." The 1597 edition was illustrated mainly with woodblocks obtained by the publisher Norton from Nikolaus Bass!e of Frankfurt, who had used them in the German herbal of Tabernaemontanus (Theodorus of Bergzabern), 1588-91. Several other cuts were added by Gerard, notably one which is considered to be the earliest depiction of the potato, which Gerard believed was native to Virginia. In his revised edition, Johnson enlarged the text to include a total of 2850 plants, added a comprehensive historical introduction, "corrected many of Gerard's more gullible errors, and improved the accuracy of the illustrations by using Plantin's woodcuts." (Hunt). Gerard's herbal is listed in European Americana because it includes numerous descriptions and illustrations of American plants, including the previously mentioned potato. #11; STC 11752. PALISSY, Bernard
Le Moyen de devenir Riche, et la Maniere Veritable, par laquelle tous les hommes de la France pourront apprendre a multiplier & augmenter leurs thresors & possessions
|
8 p.l., 255 pp.; 8 p.l., 526 pp. Thickish 8vo, 19th cent. calf-backed marbled boards. Paris: R. Fouet, 1636.pFirst collected edition of Palissy's two major books: the La Recepte Veritable (1st ed.: 1563) and Discours Admirables (1st ed.: 1580); the first editions are very rare and our 1636 edition is extremely uncommon. 69-77. Zittel, pp. 18 & 132.. First Edition. Hard cover.

|
Jodocus Hondius, 1636. Very good Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 14" x 15.75". Map of the Danish island of Fyn, as well as Langeland and r. English text on back describes the area. From the "Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas sive Cosmographicae" (Mercator-Hondius Atlas). Plate was originally made by Mercator and later added to by Hondius. Some aging around margins and minor chipping to left edge and corners. Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Although this requires some distortion, it was of great use for navigators, and is historically important, as it is still the most commonly used projection today.

Mitelli, Agostino
All'Ill. Sig. Francesco Maria Zambeccari Come a Suo Singolar. Mo Padrone Agostino Mitelli D.D.D.
|
Bologna (Ag. o Parisini For, 1636. 24 unnumbered etched plates, loose as issued, printed on buff-colored paper (watermarked with a paschal lamb in a circle surmounted by the initial A). 250 x 170 mm. (ca. 9 7/8 x 6 5/8 inches). Sm. 4to. Portfolio (modern gilt boards, 1/4 red morocco). This untitled suite of exuberant, often fantastical, decorative cartouches and other ornaments is one of four sets of prints by Agostino Mitelli (1606-1660), the renowned Bolognese quadratura painter, father of Giuseppe Maria Mitelli. Dated 1636, dedicated to Count Zambeccari, and printed and/or published by Agostino Parisini, it is known in several editions or issues. In one, the title-page was reworked with the ?inscription Rousel exc. ?; in another, with the name of Giovan Batista Paganelli, D.D. and a new dedication to Francesco Bandini. In the present copy, as in the set in the Victoria and Albert, one plate was reworked as a title-page in honor of the marriage of the Duke Paolo Spinola to the Princes Anna Colonna, and bears the date Perugia 1653; the arms of the two families are engraved on the tilted cartouches at top. The title-page also carries the credit, in the architrave below the dedication, ?Gio. Jacomo Rossi formis Romae alla Pace, all insegna di Parigi. ? The watermark is not in Briquet. Intermittent foxing and occasional light soiling; one plate with a clean tear at one corner, with old mend; a few light touches in pencil; nice impressions.
