GRILLOT, Jean
---- [Attributes: Hard Cover]

William Camden, Thomas Browne [translator]
Tomus Alter, & Idem: Or the Historie of the Life and Reigne of that Famous Princesse Elizabeth: containing a briefe Memoriall of the chiefest Affaires of State .
Tho Harper (printer) and William Web (bookseller), London and Oxford 1629 - A good copy of the first edition in English of William Camden's famous contemporary history of Queen Elizabeth I. In 1597 Lord Burleigh asked Camden to write a history of Elizabeth. He started the first part in 1607, and completed it in 1615. The second part - from 1589 to her death in 1603 - was begun in 1617 and published posthumously in 1625 in Leiden and 1627 in London. It was translated from the Latin by Thomas Browne, a student of Christ Church, who dedicated his work to King Charles I. This copy is the first edition of that translation - published in 1629. It is in a contemporary full leather binding which is, understandably, worn with splitting at the spine joints - particularly at the front where the board is beginning to detach, and much wear to corners and edges, particularly the back board. The book measures 8.75 x 6.75 inches. The preliminaries are browned with some wrinkling at page edges, a small ink signature and a couple of lines of writing (which look to be 1800's). With frontispiece engraving of Elizabeth's tomb; title page; portrait of Elizabeth; dedication to King Charles I; address to the reader; contents listing; text taking her reign year by year (384 pp); index; and appendix 'containing animadversions upon severall passages, corrections of sundry errours, and Additions of some remarkable matters of the History'. With decorative initial capitals and head and tailpieces. Overall the text is very clean, bar occasional browning and spotting and there is no text loss. There is some fraying at the bottom front edge of the preliminaries, frontispiece and title page. The final page of the appendix has some browning and fraying and the endpapers are browned and damp spotted. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
