Cette édition est en outre augmentée du Recueil des édicts et articles accordez par le Roy Henry IIII pour la réunion de ses Sujets. Ces quatre parties ont toutes un titre et une pagination spécifiques. Cette seconde édition (qui est en fait au moins la cinquième) est la plus complète et c'est sur le texte de celle-ci que furent imprimées les éditions suivantes. Cette compilation historique très habilement construite nous renseigne sur la période des guerres de religion et des premiers temps de la Ligue, de 1576 à 1589. L'ouvrage eut beaucoup de succès comme en témoignent les nombreuses réimpressions exécutées au début du XVIIe s. Pierre Matthieu (1563-1621), installé à Lyon depuis 1586 où il était avocat au présidial fut l'un des députés qui prêta serment d'allégeance au roi (1594) au nom de Lyon. Brescia, Vicenzo Sabbio, 1600. FIRST EDITION, Folio. Pp (xviii) 412 (iv). Italic letter within printed double-line border,numerous printed mathematical calculations in text. Title within elegant architectural border, large medallion portrait of the author aged 48 at foot, contemp ms '40' beneath. Fine engraved portrait of the dedicatee Christopher Papa of Nuremberg with woodcut initial and ornamental headpiece in next, further woodcut initials and ornaments. Contemp. printed correction slip pasted to contents table, very occasional early ink marginalia and corrections, prob of Antonio Orsetti, his contemp. autograph on fly. Slight age yellowing, prelim blank with oil marks, a very good, clean, well-margined copy in contemp. vellum over boards. Rare first and only early edition of this handsomely produced, important, arithmetical textbook devoted to practical and commercial arithmetic and a leader in its field. Although described as 'Prima Parte' it is in fact the only part ever printed. Zuchetta was a mathematician from Genoa; in his preface he apologizes to the reader for writing in his provincial 'Genoese' rather than the by now general Tuscan. "The 'Prologo' is a curious dissertation on the 'Arti Scienze, & altro,' with some ninety-eight arguments to show the need for arithmetic on the part of all classes of humanity. The farmer, the musician, the thief, the cook, the prelate, all are shown to have need of number; and Nature, Intelligence and even God himself make use of it. The book presupposes a knowledge of the arithmetic of integers, and opens with a treatment of fractions. The rule of three, in all of its forms, and with the most unbusinesslike numbers, is then discussed at great length and this is followed by various complications of the Regoladel Cattaino, 'cosi detta da gli Arabi inventori di quello, ch'in lingua nostra significa falso posizione'. The latter part of the book [everything after p. 175] treats of such topics as partnership, barter and alligation."(Smith, cit. infra) Much of the text deals with mercantile transactions, especially those involving more than one currency and tables of exchange rates are given for all the major trading centres likely to be of interest to Italian merchants - a full page is given of the currency rates in London, 'sterlini' against the principal Italian currencies. Apart from its obvious mathematical interest (though it produced or developed no new theories) the work is obviously of considerable interest to the social, economic and legal historian. Antonio Orsetti evidently had a significant library, particularly of scientific and mathematical works, as an appreciable number can still be traced. He was clearly acquiring quite systematically in the first part of the 17th C, regrettably however we have discovered nothing more about him. BM STC It. p. 745. Brunet V 1544 "seule partie publiée". Verscheen eerder in het Frans en in Nederlandse vertaling in Brussel. Pulton (1536-1618), Elizabethan legal author, who spent his life compiling the statute laws of England."Pulton's chief occupation was producing an edition of the statutes for publication. Robert Bowyer, clerk of parliament, and Henry Elsing, keeper of the records in the Tower of London, contracted him as the first private person to research the records of parliament. His patrons Sir William Cordell and Ellesmere gave him further assistance. Bowyer and Elsing were unhappy at seeing an outsider producing a comprehensive edition that gave the full text of statutes still in force and an abridged text of the remainder, pointing out that these had been published in their original language before. They did not believe he had the technical skill to read the old documents without their assistance and were concerned that he could disclose deficiencies in the state of the archive, including the fact that some important statutes were no longer extant. Both men were also concerned that Pulton would make money, while they went without. The situation was resolved when it was agreed that the proceeds be shared. His is the earliest instance of the exertions of any individual, without the sanction of Parliament, towards making a collection of Statutes. Ex Officina Noetheniana - This, Lacroix's great work, is a commentary on the Medulla theologiae moralis of Hermann Busenbaum (1600-1668). Busenbaum was a Jesuit moral theologian whose Medulla became a classic type of manual for moral theology as taught in seminaries. Lacroix's commentary on the work became one of the outstanding theological works of the 18th century. It went through 25 editions in 50 years and won for Lacroix the reputation of being one of the finest moralists of his age. Folio, [750pp.] + [678pp. + 183pp.]. Bound in contemporary calf, six raised bands. Publisher: [?Rome], Hieronymus Wierx inuentor Henricus van Schoel excudit, c. 1600Small 12mo-size volume, 146 x 100 mms., consisting of title-page and 20 full-page engraved plates, engraved on recto only, the leaves measuring 137 x 91 mms., and the plate area, 94 x 60 mms., including Latin captions underneath the illustration, with three blank leaves before title-age and three after last engraved plate, bound in full contemporary stiff vellum; plate 1 slightly defective with some loss of text under illustration, but repaired with contemporary paper, neat paper repair on verso of plate 14, another paper repair to verso of plate 17, small repair to lower corners of plates 18 and 19, short tears in fore-margins of plates 12 and 15, but a fine copy with very clear impressions of the plates. The plates were engraved by Hieronymus Wierx (or Wierix; 1533 - 1619), one of the greatest Flemish artists of the 16th and early 17th century, who with his brothers Antoine and Johann made a significant contribution to Flemish art history in that period. The printer and publisher Hendrick van Schoel (d. 1624), also Flemish, had a printing shop in Rome, and he is probably best-known for his maps. The plates depict the birth of Mary, the mother of Christ, mentioning her putative mother, Anna, in plate 2. The first five plates cover her life until the visitation of the angel Gabriel in plate 6. The subsequent plates depict the birth of Christ and his life and death, concluding with two plates about Mary's death and assumption into heaven. This pictorial representation of Mary's life possibly derives from the biography by Fancois Coster (1532 - 1619), De vita et laudibus Deiparae Mariae Virginis (1587). No copies traced in any library.

According to Sweet & Maxwell, this is the first English book devoted exclusively to equity statutes and statutory interpretation. Possibly modeled on Pulton's Abstract of All the Penal Statutes (c. 1560), it is a table of the statutes equitably interpreted by the courts followed by abstracts of cases. "It is a curious book. It begins with a learned introduction upon equity in general, and then groups the cases under twenty heads. The statutes are placed in chronological order under each head; and after each statute are given references to the cases. It involved a great deal of labour, and can hardly have been of much practical value" (Holdsworth). Mit einer farbigen Wappengouache am ersten Blatt (Auerhahn im Wappenschild, darüber Helm und Harnisch) und zahlreichen kalligraphischen Initialen. Zeitgenössischer Lederband mit Resten der ursprünglichen Vergoldung und Schließenhaften. Um das ornamentale Mittelstück die goldgeprägte Datierung 1604 sowie das Besitzermonogramm A[nna] A[uerin] G[eborene] M[agenstreiterin] von T[eising]. Dreiseitiger punzierter Goldschnitt. 8vo (115:160:70 mm). Reizendes Taschengebetbuch des späten 16. Jahrhunderts, entstanden im Auftrag und für den täglichen Gebrauch der 1570 geborenen Anna Auerin aus Teising im Landkreis Altötting (Oberbayern). Die Niederschrift erfolgte offensichtlich in einem Zug von der Hand eines professionellen Schreibers, der Buchschmuck beschränkt sich auf die Wappengouache der Auftraggeberin am ersten Blatt. Auf den ursprünglich unbeschrieben Blättern nach dem "Ennde dieses Biechels" wenige spätere Zusätze, darunter auch der eigenh. Eintrag der Vorbesitzerin: "Im Jar 1570 den 25 Aprillis bin ich Anna Auerin geborne Magenstreitterin von Diesburg geboren. Gott verleich mir seine gettliche genadt dass Ich In dem waren christlichen Glauben und gutten weegen mein leben zubringe und nach dem selbigen die Ewige freidt mitt allen außerwelten Erlangen mege Amen." Eine Anne Auerin war für uns in den Passauer Taufmatrikeln zweimal als Patin nachweisbar (Sankt Stephan, Bd. I, S. 45 bzw. S. 51), das Wappen der Auer auch abgebildet bei O. Neubecker S. 374 (= Siebmacher Tf. 21). - Die Vergoldung größtenteils abgerieben, der intakte Einband an den Ecken und und Kapitalen bestoßen, innen sauber und fleckenfrei. Seltenes Beispiel eines volkssprachlichen, bürgerlichen Stundenbuchs um 1600, vollständig und im originalen Einband.

Edition originale très rare, complète de toutes les parties requises. Les Mémoires de Philippe Duplessis Mornay furent publiés en deux fois. Le tome II porte l'adresse A La Forest, par J. Bureau, 1625 : après le siège de Montauban (1621), le gouvernement de Saumur fut retiré à Duplessis-Mornay ; il se retira en Poitou au château de la Forest (La Forêt-sur-Sèvre) où il mourut en 1623. C'est là que peu après furent imprimés les deux premiers volumes de ses mémoires. Hauser : Ce ne sont pas des « mémoires », au sens moderne du mot, mais plutôt, suivant la division adoptée par Daillé, des Traités, discours, mémoires et advis. En un mot, ce sont les papiers de Mornay, papiers parmi lesquels figurent I°, des écrits de Mornay antérieurement publiés sous le voile du pseudonyme ou de l'anonyme ; 2° des écrits inédits ; 3° des lettres de et à Mornay ; 4° des instructions remises à Mornay lors de ses diverses missions, ou rédigées pour d'autres négociateurs sous son inspiration ; 5° des pièces officielles (Déclarations ou protestations du roi de Navarre, etc.) dont Mornay est sans doute l'auteur réel. « On gagne plus qu'on ne perd à ce que ce titre de Mémoires indique mal le caractère d'un recueil où l'on trouve presque toute entière l'histoire des guerres civiles et religieuses sous les règnes de Charles IX, Henri III et Henri IV » (Larousse). Très bon exemplaire. Les 2 premiers volumes sont aux armes de Louis-Hyacinthe Boyer de Crémilles (1700-1768), Maréchal général des logis de l'armée de Flandres en 1746, grand-croix de l'ordre de Saint-Louis en 1757, gouverneur d'Aire et commandant en chef dans la province d'Artois en 1758. Some staining and uneven fading but a very good copy. Inscribed by the translator to the actor Charles Macready, "with the Translator's Respects." Also signed on the same page for Macready and dated 1858. This translation of Calderón is done in blank verse which successfully summarizes the facts of the play with added imagery in a way that made it "eminently readable." (Cambridge/ English Vol XIII). The great actor William Macready had retired from the stage in 1851, but his friendship with Edward FitzGerald goes back a generation. FitzGerald had written several reviews of Macready's acting and often attended the performances in London. Edward FitzGerald (b. March 31, 1809, Bredfield, near Woodbridge, Suffolk, Eng.--d. June 14, 1883, Merton, Norfolk), English writer, best known for his Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. He translated Six Dramas of Calderón (1853) before turning to Oriental studies and mastering Persian.)
