(dont prologue et table), 403 ff.(mal chiffré 303), (1) ff. avec au verso la marque de Pierre Vidoue (1) f. bl. ,page de titre manuscrite, dos à 4 faux-nerfs orné à la roulette, filets dorés et filets à froid encré, titre et date dorés, fleurons et décor géométrique à froid, filet doré, jeu de trèfles à 5 feuilles, motifs géométrique à l¿encre avec étoiles dorées aux angles et fleurons poussés à froid en encadrement des plats. Roulette dorée sur les coupes, dentelle intérieure, toutes tranches dorées et antiquées. Garde de papier à la planche tricolore (blanc, vert, rouge) avec motifs floraux. Belle impression en caractères gothiques, réglée et accompagnée de 49 petites vignettes de 2 suites gravées sur bois attribuéess à Geoffroy Tory. Ces vignettes qiui avaient été dessinées pour l¿édition précédente de 1529 présentent l¿intérêt d¿illuster de très près le texte et de manifester un réel effet de renouvellement. En effet, les éditions antérieures se contentaient d¿employer des bois très archaïque utilisés maintes fois depuis les premières éditions incunables. Exemplaire à grandes marges et édition rare de ce long poème qui ne fut pas réimprimé avant1735.post-incunable; Traduction en prose du Roman de la rose dans sa version moralisée par Jean Molinet. Le Roman de la Rose est le seul des grands ouvrages littéraires du Moyen-âge français, dont le souvenir et l'influence se perpétuèrent jusqu'en pleine Renaissance ; il constitue l'une des formes où s'exprime le plus typiquement la sensibilité du XIIIe siècle, et où se retrouve avec prédilection celle des XIVe et XV siècles. Pierre Vidoue fut l¿imprimeur de cette édition et fut partagée avec neuf autres libraires dont entre autres (SDenys, Longis, Morin, Les Angeliers, André, Masse, Regnault, Poncelet Le Preux) permettant de modifier les feuillets de prologue indépendamment du texte. Les 2 exemplaires à la BNF ont également cette particularité (prologue et table non signés et insérés le texte, le premier feuillet de texte [i] étant signé [a]. (Hieronymus Froben and Nicolaus Episcopius). 1538 (colophon 1539), Basel - A scarce early edition of the "Apophthegmatum," a collection of proverbs and pithy sayings harvested from classical Greek and Roman authors (the first edition was printed in 1531 by Froben in Basel). This work found a contemporary English audience and demonstrates the popularity of Erasmus' text in the original Latin throughout Europe. It was translated into English in 1540, French in 1543, Italian in 1546, and Spanish in 1549. Provenance: 1. Unidentified early inscription at head of title-page. 2. Jacob La(tus?), contemporary signature to verso of the final leaf. VD 16 E2038. 8vo. (16),864,(28)pp. Index. Title & final verso with Froben's woodcut device. Cont. English calf over wooden boards (with manuscript waste from a medieval liturgical manuscript), skillfully rebacked, lacking clasps. Covers with a single roll border within double blind rules. The roll, with alternating Janus and floral patterns, remains unidentified. Top edge of book block has the title and author written in cont. manuscript. Title page lightly soiled, very light marginal water staining to the blank fore- edge of the first gathering and the lower blank margin of the final two gatherings. Rare édition bâloise des petits essais historiques de l'humaniste napolitain Michele Riccio (1455-1515) sur les royaumes de France, Espagne, Jérusalem, Naples, Sicile et Hongrie. Ils avaient d'abord été tous imprimés séparément à Rome et à Milan en 1505 et 1506, et Josse Bade les avait rassemblés pour la première fois en un seul volume en 1507. Froben en avait donné une édition antérieurement en 1517. Michele Riccio fut conseiller et avocat fiscal à Naples pour le roi de France Louis XII et rejoignit la France où il devint membre du Grand Conseil. Première édition de la traduction latine des Geoponica, par l'humaniste et médecin allemand Janus Cornarius (1500-1558), de son vrai nom Johannes Hainpol, ancien élève de Melanchthon à l'université de Wittemberg. Les Geoponica, divisés en vingt livres, sont un recueil célèbre d'extraits d'ouvrages sur l'agriculture d'auteurs grecs du IIe au IVe s. que Cassianus Bassus avait rédigé au Xe siècle, probablement par ordre de l'empereur Constantin VI Porphyrogénète. Cet ouvrage est une véritable encyclopédie sur l'agriculture qui regroupe l'ensemble des connaissances acquises dans l'Antiquité. Chacune des divisions de l'ouvrage traite d'un sujet particulier. Les thèmes abordés concernent la météorologie, la culture des céréales, les travaux de la vigne et l'élaboration du vin, la culture de l'olivier et la fabrication de l'huile, les cultures potagères et fruitières, les fleurs, les abeilles, l'élevage des chevaux, des chiens et des ruminants, les poissons etc. L'édition princeps grecque de cet ouvrage ne fut donnée que l'année suivante (1539) à Bâle, chez Winter. Bel exemplaire dans une intéressante et rare reliure nomminative vraisemblablement bâloise au décor doré, argenté et estampé à froid, faite pour le médecin originaire de Bari, Jacopo Ferdinando, qui avait suivi Bona Sforza en Pologne et fut le médecin particulier des rois Sigismond I et II. Il publia notamment un traité sur les moyens de se préserver de la peste (De regimine a peste preservativo tractatus, Cracovie, 1542). On trouve quelques annotations marginales de sa main dans le traité de Riccio sur le royaume de Sicile et de Naples dont il était originaire, et il a biffé le nom de Cornarius à chaque occurence dans sa traduction des Geoponica, probablement à cause de sa proximité avec Erasme et ses idées proches de celles de la Réforme. Petit in 8 de 432pp., reliure en plein vélin ivoire rigide de l'époque, en partie remonté et très bien restauré avec un vélin plus récent, dos à 4 petits nerfs, nom de l'auteur et titre manuscrits sur la tête du dos, intérieur frais, bon et bel exemplaire de cette élégante impression de Denis de Harsy pour les héritiers de Simon Vincent. Troisième édition de la collection des Brefs de Léon X rédigés par Pietro Bembo (la première à Venise, 1515). Bembo fut secrétaire intime de Jean de Médicis (le fils de Laurent le Magnifique) durant tout son pontificat (1513-1521). Ce grand protecteur des arts et des lettres marqua profondément son siècle par sa munificence et ses libéralités à l'égard des plus grands savants de son temps, et favorisa par ses largesses l'essor de la Renaissance. Et s'il fut moins habile politique, s'il ne sut pas non plus correctement envisager la naissance de la Réforme et l'importance des contestations de Luther; son pontificat est d'une importance capitale et marque un tournant dans l'histoire politique et religieuse de l'Europe tout entière. On comprend le choix qu'il fit de Pietro Bembo comme secrétaire, ancien correcteur des éditions d'Aldo Manuzio (d'Alde Manuce), et déjà célèbre pour sa parfaite connaissance du latin et du grec comme pour l'élégance cicéronienne de son style. À la fin du volume, figurent également quelques lettres de Bembo à plusieurs éminents humanistes: Longolius, Guillaume Budé et Erasme. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Fabrizio Frizzi Baccioni, sul titolo timbro del principe letterato Pietro Odescalchi (1789-1856) e varie firme di appartenenza divenute illeggibili, nella pagina di dedica altra nota di possesso («ad usum fratris Antonini de chr.° or.min. reg. proe calabrie 1546»). Segni di tarlo restaurati nel margine bianco delle carte finali, arrossamenti e fioriture, ma nel omplesso copia più che buona.PRIMA EDIZIONE, dedicata dal traduttore a Girolamo Querini, del volgarizzamento di Antonio Brucioli della celebre Rhetorica ad Herennium (opera di incerto autore, variamente attribuita a Marco Tullio Cicerone o a Cornificius, retore vissuto nel I secolo a.C.). La traduzione venne ristampata nel 1542 da Gabriele Giolito.Antonio Brucioli si formò culturalmente nel circolo platonico degli Orti Oricellari di Firenze, sua città natale, e dimostrò ben presto malcelate simpatie verso le dottrine luterane, sviluppatesi in seguito a suoi viaggi a Lione e in Germania. Pur essendo filorepubblicano, dopo la cacciata dei Medici nel 1527, fu messo in esilio dalle autorità cittadine per le sue idee religiose. Si trasferì quindi a Venezia, dove insieme ai fratelli Francesco e Alessandro dopo alcuni anni avrebbe impiantato una tipografia. Tra il 1530 e il 1532 pubblicò la sua versione in lingua italiana del Nuovo e del Vecchio Testamento. La fama acquisita con questa sua fatica gli valse la protezione della duchessa di Ferrara Renata di Francia e della duchessa di Urbino Eleonora Gonzaga. A Venezia Brucioli esercitava anche il mestiere di libraio, e, in questa funzione, poté diffondere le opere dei più importanti riformatori tedeschi. Nel 1547 fu più volte sottoposto ad interrogatori da parte dell?Inquisizione. Nonostante egli avesse adottato un rigoroso nicodemismo e formalmente non avesse mai abbandonato il cattolicesimo, nel 1558 fu costretto all?abiura pubblica delle sue idee. Brucioli morì nel 1566 a Venezia (cfr. É. Boillet, a cura di, Antonio Brucioli. Georg Rhau (1488-1548) était Kantor à la Thomasschule de Leipzig. Il devint imprimeur à Wittenberg, publiant de nombreux livres, dont plusieurs premières éditions de Luther, et aussi des ouvrages de musique, dont les siens. Le premier ouvrage est illustré de deux bois gravés, dont le célèbre Vénus et Cupidon voleur de miel de Cranach. Bois gravé à pleine page à la fin du deuxième ouvrage. Les titres des deux ouvrages sont dans des encadrements gravés. Nombreuses pages de musique gravées sur bois. "Cet ouvrage très pédagogique contient un exposé fort clair de la solmisation et du système modal. Quelques passages font preuve d'un point de vue assez moderne. Rhau distingue la scala cantus bduralis et la scala cantus bmollis. Il donne une règle quasi mécanique des muances, où le changement vers le nouvel hexacorde se fait toujours sur re en montant, sur la en descendant. "$ §§§ A very rare music teaching manual. Tres rare troisieme edition revisee, "l'edition definitive", de l'un des principaux traites que l'humaniste espagnol consacra aux questions d'instruction des femmes, de leur acces a la culture et de leur place dans la famille et dans la societe. Precepteur de Marie Tudor, la future reine d'Angleterre, Vives fut fortement ebranle par son emprisonnement a Londres pour avoir blame le projet de divorce de Henry VIII. Banni d'Angleterre, il trouva refuge a Bruges ou il composa cet ouvrage. "Le ton s'est profondement modifie. Non seulement le propos s'est durci contre les abus masculins, mais la defense de la condition feminine s'est faite plus eloquente et plus ferme. L'injustice dont souffrait celle qu'il considerait comme 'sa souveraine' y est sans doute pour quelque chose. Sa reflexion se deplace alors de la question des contenus d'instruction a celle de choix moraux" (B. Jolivet, 'Peut-on, selon Vives, eduquer la femme sans eduquer le mari?', texte en ligne, Universite de la Reunion, 2011). Polygraphe de genie, Vives est l'une des trois principales figures de l'humanisme europeen (avec Bude et Erasme) et l'un des philosophes espagnols les plus profonds et les plus engages de la Renaissance. 1538 - in Latin with English summary, in a fine clear script, allowing Giovanni Battista CASTELLI , (d. 1583), to hold united the parish of St. Bartolomeo della Beveraria, worth not more than 6 gold ducats p.a., free by the resignation of Dionisio Castelli, with the parish of St. Nicholas and St. Agata at Zola Predosa (8 miles west of Bologna), during the life of the applicant, and referring to the Constitutions of Boniface VIII (Pope, 1294-1303) on unions of this kind, vellum, 12½" x 21½", Bologna, 4th August lacks seal, with a few small holes just touching a few letters Count Giovanni Battista CASTELLI, probably an illegitimate son of the family settled at Bologna since the 12th century, was a Canon of Bologna 1540-1575, when he gave up his preferments having been made Bishop of Rimini. Castelli took his doctorate in 1546 and taught civil law at the University till May 1551, when he attended the Council of Trent in the suite of Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi. Many of the Commissions applied to him for advice and draughting, for example concerning the safe conducts for the Protestant delegates, and the eternal question of referring matters direct to the Pope (which he strongly supported) instead of to the local superior. In the spring of 1563 he was at the resumed council at Innsbruck. In 1566 he was 'poached' by Cardinal Borromeo to Milan, as Vicar-General, to help with his Tridentine reforms. Castelli's bishop, Gabriele Paleotti, was reluctant to let him go, as being his right hand man in similar work, and pointed out that his preferments at Bologna included the cure of 600 souls. On 29th March 1574 Castelli became Bishop of Rimini, and made minute pastoral visitations in Borromeo's manner. There followed appointments as Papal visitor to dioceses in Tuscany and the Northern Papal states, again to enforce the Tridentine decrees. He seems to have shared the outlook of Pius V - an intense desire for pastoral work, coupled with undue severity - and in fact was recalled from Tuscany in 1576 after the clergy had complained to the Pope about the 'earthquake' he had caused. In 1580 Castelli was appointed Nuncio (ambassador) to France. He worked to avoid the suggested marriage of the Duke of Anjou - the 'little frog' - to Elizabeth I, which would have made her Queen of France on the death of Henri III. But his biggest struggle was with the French Parliament and the Protestant party, who had approved the strongly 'gallican' Ordinances of Blois (1579) in opposition to many provisions of the Council of Trent. Castelli, more a diocesan bishop than an ambassador, fell ill from exhaustion, and died at the Hôtel de Sens on 27th August 1583.

Stemma imperiale in xilografia al frontespizio; cc. 84 nn., di cui l'ultima b. Stemma imperiale in xilografia al frontespizio, caratteri corsivi. L'opera contiene le "Rime" di Antonio Brocardo, in prima edizione, postuma, quelle di Niccolò Delfino e di Francesco Maria Molza, di cui si trova il poema "La Nimpha Tiberina", qui pubblicato per la prima volta, in cui è riconoscibile la figura di Lucia Faustina Mancini. Intervento a penna, di mano coeva, alla c. 18, nella quale, sopra i versi del Brocardo "Quelle conte bellezze; ove natura." è posta la scritta "di M. Lodovico Dolce", segue la correzione di due parole. Antonio Brocardo morì, giovanissimo, nel 1531, nel pieno di una disputa letteraria che lo vedeva in contrasto con Pietro Bembo e, per questo, sotto gli attacchi letterari di Pietro Aretino. Bell'esemplare. Gamba, 1518, in nota a Molza: "Di non poca rarità e da tenersi care sono le edizioni seguenti. Rime. 1538. Per Agostino de Bindoni, Venice 1538 - Hardcover. Small 8vo. 344pp. Signatures: A-X8 Y4. Old (eighteenth century?) quarter leather, with varnished paper covered boards, and leather spine with leather title label between gilt rules. Edged speckled. Large woodcut vignettes on title-page, verso of title page, and at colophon. Imprint and year of publication in colophon. As with all recorded copies of this edition, the year of publication at the end of the author's Foreword is misprinted as 1635 whereas it should be 1535, the year of the first Italian edition of this title (see for example the listing in the Brit. Mus. cat.). 78 large (generally 3/4 page) woodcuts of hands. Brunet V 945; Caillet 10830. An early Italian language edition of "Epitoma Chyromantico," a book which gained renown as one of the most influential works on chiromancy (palmistry) to come out of the 16th century. The author, Tricasso (1491-c.1550), was a disciple of the famous physiognomist Barthélemy Coclès, although he disagreed with his mentor on a number of matters, not least Coclès uncharitable comments about other palmists, and also some of his astrological attributions. After several introductory chapters, Tricasso's books offers a detailed survey of the different marks to be found on hands, with accompanying illustrations. The interpretations are sometimes at odds with those of later palmistry - the art was in its infancy at the time and there was no general agreement on many of the principles - but give interesting insight into chyromancy as it was first conceived. Boards rounded at points, and spine rubbed and with a couple of worm holes. Small, modern bookplate on front pastedown, crack between front end-paper and title page, but binding still solid. Title page darkened and a little chipped at edges, occasional light discoloration of the pages throughout. One or two small worm holes running through the upper margin of twenty or so leaves, with a few neat, early paper repairs. Small ink stamped number repeated a number of times on last blank and rear pastedown. No other markings. Over all a tight, clean VG copy, of a rare early work. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Contemp. limp vellum (new flyleaves). From the collection of Hendrik D. L. Vervliet. Venice, n. pr. (Aurelio Pincio), 1538. First edition of a fine Venetian woodcut book, main text in Italics with notes in Roman type. The title-border is a reduced copy of that in Luc' Antonio Giunta's 1532 edition of Brucioli's translation of the Bible. The events of the Old and New Testaments are told in neo-Latin verse, but employing the classical epic metre of dactylic hexameter. The woodcut illustrations show scenes from the Bible such as the expulsion from Paradise, Kain slaying Abel, Babel, and from the New Testament nativity, crucifixion, and resurrection. The cut on f. 113 of Ovid, Virgil and Dido represents a further combination of the sacred and profane. The Harvard copy has a manuscript correction of "disertum" for "desertum" in the "Excusatio" on f. 6, whereas the BL copy (according to Mortimer) has a printed correction, presumably representing a later state. The printer was identified from the ornamental capitals as Aurelio Pincio by Dennis Rhodes. - Lacking leaf a8, title somewhat dusty, edges a bit frayed, with stamps on recto and verso, some old ms. insc., several other small stamps in margins, waterstain to outer lower corner of a few leaves, some traces of worming. Otherwise an interesting example of a 16th-century Venetian illustrated book, printed in an attractive Italic type. - Mortimer 522; Sander 7506. Gryphium, 1538. 2 parties en 1 volume in 8 de 607pp.-[12] ff.-247pp., reliure en plein daim beige de l'époque, dos à 4 nerfs avec une étiquette en papier contenant le nom de l'auteur et le titre manuscrits à l'encre noire contrecollée sur la tête du dos, plats et dos frottés avec de petites taches noires, mors du plat supérieur fendu dans sa partie supérieure et en son centre et dans sa partie inférieure, mors du deuxième plat légèrement fendu en bas de ce dernier, reliure robuste, manque les lacets, manque la première page de garde, quelques passages soulignés et notes manuscrites dans les marges à l'encre noire de l'epoque notamment aux livres VI, VII, VIII, IX, croix à l'encre noire et une rature noire sur un passage sans altérer la lecture et la compréhension du texte, un trou de ver dans la marge supérieure externe des feuillets 165 et 167 sans toucher le texte, mouillures dans la partie supérieure de la marge externe du livre IV, sans gravité, un trou de ver à la tête du dos et un trou de ver au centre du deuxième plat, lettrines historiées, deux frontispices ornés de la marque de l'éditeur représentant un griffon, belle marque de l'éditeur représentant une gravure différente d'un griffon au dernier feuillet de la première partie, rousseurs éparses, bon exemplaire. 500 € Quintilien naquit vers 35 ou 30 avant Jésus-Christ dans une petite ville près de Logroño dans l'actuelle Espagne. Il était le fils d'un avocat et orateur. Il poursuivit des études dans cette voie. Il fut l'ami de Pline l'ancien et le professeur du neveu de celui-ci, Pline le jeune, et peut-être même de Tacite, mais sans certitude. "De Institutione oratoria'' son oeuvre considérée comme la plus importante, nous est intégralement parvenue sous la forme de deux livres divisés en deux parties. Elle est souvent traduite par: ''Institution oratoire’' au sens humaniste du terme. Enfin l'auteur serait aussi à l'origine de "l'éxamètre mnémonique de Quintilien" ou "QQOQCP": "Quel est le coupable?, Quel est le crime?, Où l'a-t-on commis? Par quel moyen ou avec quel complice? Pourquoi?, De quelle manière?, A quel moment?'', principe qui est encore d'usage de nos jours, servant de principe au fonctionnement de l'investigation journalistique, de l'enquête policière, et de la procédure judiciaire. Besonders bekannt wurde er durch seinen "Spiegel der Artzney". In vorliegendem Werk beschreibt er einige Heilbäder, darunter Baden bei Zürich, Ems, Baden-Baden, Göppingen und Überlingen. Muy buen estado, limpio sin manchas ni óxido. Nombre del propietario en s. XVIII en portada. Encuadernado en plena piel de época con tejuelo y bellos hierros en lomera. (Aulus Cornelius Celsus, fue un enciclopedista romano, y tal vez médico nacido en la Galia Narbonense. Su único trabajo conservado, los ocho libros "De Medicina", es la única sección que se conserva de una enciclopedia mucho más extensa (llamada Artes), fuente primaria de temas como dieta, farmacia, cirugía y temas relacionados. El "De Medicina" es uno de los mejores registros del saber de los médicos alejandrinos. Fue la primera obra médca antigua en ser impresa (Venecia 1478) y se convirtió en objeto de veneración de los médicos (y no médicos) humanistas del Renacimiento, quienes valoraron sobre todo la pureza de su estilo latino y la precisión de sus doctrinas médicas.
