In conclusion the final stanza is, "So long as Boston shall Boston be, and her bay-tides rise and fall, Shall freedom stand in the Old South Church And plead for the rights of all!" It is signed and dated, "John G. Whittier". This Church was founded in 1678, and is still in operation. Between 1872 and 1875 it was rebuilt on Boylston St. This poem was used as a dedication some 22 years later. It is boldly penned On four vellum pages.          Le soleil

Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1877. Second Edition. Half vellum. Very good. Second Edition. Half vellum. Three vols., 8vo (248 × 160 mm), pp. xx, 428; viii, 484; 19 plates (1 uncoloured, 12 coloured and 6 folding), and numerous engravings; occasional foxing, mostly affecting text; bound in half vellum with red lettering pieces; some rubbing, a split to joint of lower board at the the base of the first volume (c. 55 mm), still intact; otherwise very good. Second, augmented, edition.Pietro Angelo Secchi, SJ (1818-1878), Director of the Observatory of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome for 28 years, was a pioneer in astronomical spectroscopy and among the first scientists to prove that the sun was a star. The Sun remained an interest for Secchi throughout his career; he made drawings of solar eruptions and sunspots and compiled a record of sunspot activity, and in observing solar eclipses proved that the solar corona observed during these events were part of the sun and not a phenomenon resulting from the eclipse itself. An accomplished inventor, he developed the heliospectograph, the star-spectroscope and the telespectroscope, and from 1863 began collecting the spectra of stars, accumulating some 4000 stellar spectrograms. From this information Secchi was able to produce a system for categorising stars according to type, the five Secchi classes, a classification eventually superseded by the Harvard system, developed by Edward C. Pickering in the 1880s, and which became the norm by the end of the 1890s.The present work on the Sun uses this knowledge of stellar spectroscopy to demonstrate the similarities between the Sun and other stars, as well as showing that certain absorption lines in the spectrum of the Sun are caused by aborption in the Earth's atmosphere. It contains beautiful early colour images of the surface of the Sun, solar eruptions and other phenomena, detailed spectroscopic charts, and engravings (with descriptions) of many of the scientific instruments employed by Secchi for his work, making it also a useful source on the history of astronomical measuring instruments, many of which he designed and built himself. It is unusual in being published in French (and in France), unlike Secchi's other works, in Italian.COPAC records six copies of this second, augmented, edition in UK institutions.

Porträt Marie Grünewald, Ganzfigur auf einem Stuhl sitzend.

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, 1877. Two volumes complete - Volume One - xxxii, 352pp and Volume Two - xix, [1], 399pp, [1]. Slightly later half-calf and marbled paper over boards, semi-raised bands, spines in six panels, morocco title label to second panel, volume to fourth, remaining panels with central flower head and volute device, with volute corner pieces making up a frame, edges sprinkled red. Slightly rubbed to extremities, one or two small scuffs, but generally a bright set. Internally some light foxing to endpapers, folding map to volume two with old repair to reverse and is folded poorly, otherwise bright and clean. Previous owner's circular bookplate to front pastedowns. With a photographic frontispiece, and three folding maps. The Sixth edition (published in the same year as the first) of Burnaby's second work. "At the time of controversy in Britain over the Eastern question, in the winter of 1876-7, Burnaby, on leave, travelled in Turkish-ruled Asia Minor. With his faithful soldier-servant George Radford, he went from Constantinople via Angora to Kars and Batumi. He was welcomed by Turkish officials and others, hoping for British support against Russia. He wrote On Horseback through Asia Minor (2 vols., 1877). Another proudly British travelogue, its message was pro-Turkish and anti-Russian, asserting that, despite faults, Turkish rule was better than Russian, and that Russia was a threat to India. While he was writing the book the Russo-Turkish War began, and he demanded British support for Turkey. The publisher paid him £2500 plus further royalties and, despite radical criticism, his ‘panegyric upon the pashas’ (Alexander, 93) sold well" (ODNB). Howgego IV:B94. Reprint. Half Calf and Boards.          Street Life in London

Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, London 1877 - Publisher's pictorial red cloth, decoratively stamped in gilt, red and black, gilt edges "The first photographic social documentation of any kind" (Gernsheim). Thomson's photographs in Street Life in London and the commentary upon the images by Thomson and Adolphe Smith, depict a London in which life is a harsh and continuous struggle. The characters on view here are familiar to us more from Dickens' novels or from an idea of the Whitechapel of Jack the Ripper than from any nostalgic image of a strait-laced or patrician Victorianism. Thomson and Smith are, however, sympathetic to the objects of their study and seem intent on cataloguing the variety of types to be found rather than attempting any Barnum-like freakshow. As Thomson himself writes: "The precision and accuracy of photography enables us to present true types of the London poor and shield us from the accusation of either underrating or exaggerating individual peculiarities of appearance." Hasselblad 42; Gernsheim, p. 447; Truthful Lens 169. 4to. (10 5/8 x 8 inches). [4], 100pp. 37 woodburytypes on 36 leaves, each with printed caption and red ruled border. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Charbon et septicemie. Offprint in printed wrappers

      Paris: Masson, 1877. 1st edition.

Discovery of the First Anaerobic Pathogen

Pasteur, Louis (1822-95) & Joubert, Jules Francois (1834-1910). Charbon et septicemie. Offprint from: Comptes rendus de l'Academie des Sciences 85 (1877). 8vo. 24pp. Paris: G. Masson, 1877. 223 x 142 mm. Original gray printed wrappers. Fine apart from insignificant staining.

First Edition. Garrison-Morton 1932.1; 2490. Pasteur and Joubert's paper on anthrax marked Pasteur's full-fledged entry into the domain of medical research. Pasteur and Joubert challenged the experiments performed by Paul Bert, with which Bert claimed to have shown that blood from a diseased animal could produce death even after the anthrax bacteria had been killed with compressed oxygen. Pasteur demonstrated that Bert, using old blood, had confused anthrax with a form of septicemia caused by the previously unknown putrefactive microorganism Cl. septicum -- the first anaerobic pathogen discovered-- which becomes active approximately eighteen hours after death. Pasteur sought to clarify the relationship between anthrax and septicemia, and to demonstrate that Cl. septicum, like the anthrax bacterium, had a dormant spore phase resistant to environmental assault. He also noted the antagonism of Bacillus anthracis to other aerobic microorganisms, thus foreshadowing the development of antibiosis. DSB. Norman 1659.

Abby Smith and Her Cows, with a report of the law case decided contrary to law

Hartford, Conn: [American Publishing Co.]. 1877. First Edition. 8vo, 94pp; buff printed wrappers. Frontispiece engraving of Miss Smith and her cows. The delicate wrappers are worn, but generally intact, spine starting to split with about 1" lost at each end, small hole at center of front wrapper at hinge about 1/2" x 1/4", closed tear about 1" at bottom, small hole on rear cover about 1/4" x 1/4", bottom corner of back wrapper chipped, ownership stamp on front wrapper along with "property of" in ink, repeated on page v of front matter, rear cover with two closed tears professionally restored, about very good. Inside front wrapper with ad for Julia Smith's translation of the Holy Bible, inside back wrapper with ads for other publications of American Publishing Company, back wrapper with ad for American Publishing Company soliciting agents, noting "Women who can devote time to the work, often make the best of canvassers." Abby (1797-1878) and Julia Smith (1792-1886) were two of five daughters born to Zephaniah Hollister Smith, a minister, lawyer and farmer, and his wife Hannah Hadassah Smith, an accomplished astronomer. While the five daughters had little formal education, their home education was formidable including a number of languages (Latin, Greek and Hebrew, in the case of Julia, for instance, who became the first woman to translate the Bible into English in 1876). In 1873 the two elderly sisters, then in their 80s, lived on the family farm in Glastonbury, Connecticut tending their Alderney cows from which they made their own cheese and butter. They received notice from the tax collector that taxes for their farm as well as property owned by two widows in town had been increased. Curiously, only properties owned by women had been assessed higher taxes. The Smith sisters decided to attend the next town meeting; though Abby was allowed to speak, her pleas regarding the unfair tax increase were ignored. The sisters decided to refuse to pay the taxes. The town promptly auctioned off their beloved Alderney cows, though the sisters persuaded a friend to bid for them so the cows soon returned home. Abby and Julia continued to resist the unjust assessment against their farm, however. At the next town meeting, the sisters were not allowed to speak and this time the tax collector foreclosed on their farm for non- payment of taxes and auctioned it off. The sisters sued the tax collector and as their suits were being adjudicated, Samuel Bowles of the Springfield, Massachusetts REPUBLICAN (the editor who first published Emily Dickinson's poetry) learned of their plight and took up their cause. Soon newspapers across the country were publishing accounts of how the Glastonbury town fathers first singled out two little old ladies for special taxes and then persecuted them when they raised the cry of 'No taxation without representation'. Suffrage leaders such as Abby Foster Kelley, Isabella Beecher Hooker, Lucy stone and others weighed in on their behalf and the sisters found themselves invited to speak at suffrage gatherings and elsewhere. In January, 1878 Julia addressed the Senate Committee on Privileges and Elections while in March Abby testified in Hartford before a committee of the Connecticut legislature. Eventually the sisters won their case, but not before the cows went up for auction two more times, making them national celebrities in their own right. Here Julia compiled everything related to the case: letters, speeches and newspaper accounts. A women's rights cause celebre that garnered national sympathy for the sisters and for the suffrage movement. NAW III, pp, 302- 304. Timelines, p. 29. See an Image.
