Sudan: The Land and the People
|
Superb colour photograps of the Sudan on every page, some full-page. Excellent photographic reference. The dustwrappe of this copy differs from the one pictured, but this is the exactly the same book/edition (336 pages, same photographer. same writer of commentary. This edition published by Marquand Books (Seattle) in association with the University of Washington Press. The fact it was also published by Thames and Hudson indicates a quality production as opposed to a coffee-table travel book. Nice copy in dustwrapper. . [Publisher: Acadia Editions]

Perspectives on Variation Sociolinguistic, Historical, Comparative Herausgegeben von Delbecque, Nicole / Auwera, Johan van der / Geeraerts, Dirk

de Gruyter Verlag - Perspectives on Variation Sociolinguistic, Historical, Comparative Herausgegeben von Delbecque, Nicole / Auwera, Johan van der / Geeraerts, Dirk Verlag : de Gruyter ISBN : 3-11-018284-X Einband : Leinen Seiten/Umfang : VI, 345 Seiten, Abbildung(en) und Tabellen - 23 × 15,5 cm Erschienen : 1. Auflage 18.04.2005 Gewicht : 635 g Preisinfo : 118,00 Eur[D] Aus der Reihe : Trends in Linguistics, Studies and Monographs 163 The significant advances witnessed over the last years in the broad field of linguistic variation testify to a growing convergence between sociolinguistic approaches and the somewhat older historical and comparative research traditions. Particularly within cognitive and functional linguistics, the evolution towards a maximally dynamic approach to language goes hand in hand with a renewed interest in corpus research and quantitative methods of analysis. Many researchers feel that only in this way one can do justice to the complex interaction of forces and factors involved in linguistic variability, both synchronically and diachronically. The contributions to this volume illustrate the ongoing evolution of the field. By bringing together a series of analyses that rely on extensive corpuses to shed light on sociolinguistic, historical, and comparative forms of variation, the volume highlights the interaction between these subfields.

(München), C. Hanser Verlag, (2003 2005. Zus.

320p(Franz Steiner 2005). 9783515086998. Corpus der barocken Deckenmalerei in Deutschland - Bayern: Bauer, Hermann; Rupprecht, Bernhard; Büttner, Frank, Bd.11 : Freistaat Bayern, ... Berchtesgadener Land, Landkreis Ebersberg
|
Jahrhundert praktisch exempt. ISBN 3777426954 Mit zahlr. auch farb. Abb. CONDITION: New in New dust jacket and sealed New Kodak enclosure bag. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006). ] From the publisher: "In 1972, Stephen Shore left New York City and set out with a friend to Amarillo, Texas. He didn't drive, so his first view of America was framed by the passenger's window frame. He was taken aback by the fact that his experience of life as a New Yorker had very little in common with the character and aspirations of Middle America. Later that year he set out again, this time on his own, with a driver's license and a Rollei 35--a point-and-shoot camera--to explore the country through the eyes of an everyday tourist. The project was entitled American Surfaces--referring to the superficial nature of his brief encounters with places and people and the underlying character of the images that he hoped to produce. With such an easy-to-use camera, he photographed relentlessly. 'In American Surfaces, I was photographing almost every meal I ate, every person I met, every waiter or waitress who served me, every bed I slept in, every toilet I peed in. But also, I was photographing streets I was driving through, buildings I would see. ' Shore returned to New York triumphant, with hundreds of rolls of film spilling from his bags. In order to remain faithful to the conceptual foundations of the project, he followed the lead of most tourists of the time and sent his film to be developed and printed in Kodak's labs in New Jersey. The result was hundreds and hundreds of exquisitely composed colour pictures, whose subject became the benchmark for documenting of our fast-living, consumer-orientated world--a body of work that followed on from Walker Evans and Robert Frank's experiences of crossing America and that influenced reams of photographers such as Martin Parr and Bernd & Hilla Becher, who introduced a generation of students to Shore's work. |
Cambridge University Press, New York, New York, U.S.A. 2005 - "Performance is the central focus of every organization, and yet for many how this can be achieved is an unanswered question. This book takes the case of Formula 1 motorsport, where the connection between performance and all elements of the organization is fundamental success. Can you imagine your organization as a Ferrari or a Jaguar, a Williams or a Minardi? Your management team as a pit crew? Your sales force as the race team and your marketing and research people as the design studio creating a Formula 1 car? The case histories and examples which feature in this book provide both inspirational and instructional guidance to those seeking to achieve levels of performance-at the limit of possibility." This book has 225 pages and is illustrated throughout. The book is a SIGNED copy from all three authors, Mark Jenkins, Ken Pasternak, and Richard West. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

BOND, George:
A Brief Account of the Colony of Port Jackson in New South Wales; its Native Inhabitants, Productions
|
Melbourne, Edition Renard, 2005 [facsimile edition]/ [circa 1810, the eighth edition]/ 1803. Octavo, [vi], 42 pages. Papered boards with a printed title-label and translucent dustwrapper; a fine copy. One of only 212 numbered copies, of which 200 are for sale (including this deluxe limited edition of 75 copies). Now first published since about 1810; all the original editions are of great rarity. No copies of the second or third editions have been recorded and the first edition (Southampton, 1803) is extremely rare, while the fourth (Oxford, 1806), fifth (London, 1809), 'fifth' (actually the sixth, Cork, undated) and 'sixth' (actually the seventh, Dublin, also undated) editions are all very rare. The work is of considerable importance as one of the few accounts of Hunter's period as Governor. Hunter was dissatisfied with Bond's behaviour in the colony and complained of him in dispatches. Hunter was instructed to return him to England and Bond left the colony under a cloud in 1800, but his narrative was evidently very popular. He gives an account of the operation of the convict system and the economic corruption in the colony, and describes early efforts to encourage free settlers. He also includes comments on the Aborigines and on the natural history of the colony, including much from first-hand experience. See Ferguson 480 and Wantrup (pages 91-3). (The standard limited edition of 100 numbered copies, bound in stiffened wrappers with a printed paper label, is available from us for $75 a copy).

Photophysics of Molecular Materials - From Single Molecules to Single Crystals
|
Wiley VCH 2005 - Carbon based pi-conjugated materials offer a broad range of applications, going from molecular electronics and single molecule devices to nanotechnology, plastic electronics and optoelectronics. The proper physical description of such materials is in between that of molecular solids and that of low-dimensional covalent semiconductors. This book is a comprehensive review of their elementary excitations processes and dynamics, which merges the two viewpoints, sometimes very different if not contrasting. In each chapter, a broad tutorial introduction provides a solid physical background to the topic, which is further discussed based on recent experimental results obtained via state-of-the-art techniques. Both the molecular, intra-chain character and the solid state, inter-molecular physics is addressed. Reports on single molecule and single polymer chain spectroscopy introduce the on-site phenomena. Several chapters are dedicated to nano-probes, steady state and transient spectroscopies. The highly ordered state, occurring in single crystals, is also discussed thoroughly. Finally, less conventional tools such as THz spectroscopy are discussed in detail. The book provides a useful introduction to the field for newcomers, and a valid reference for experienced researchers in the field. Edition 1 (Hardback) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

2005. Langbein, John H. Prosecuting Crime in the Renaissance: England, Germany, France. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1974. ix, 321 pp. Illustrations. Reprinted 2005 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. LCCN. ISBN-13: 978-1-58477-577-5. ISBN-10: 1-58477-577-7. Cloth. New. * Our present system of criminal prosecution originated in England in the sixteenth century. Langbein traces its development, which was at its most intense during the reign of Queen Mary. He shows how the common law developed a system of official investigation and prosecution that incorporated the medieval institution of the jury trial. He places equal emphasis on the role of the justices of the peace as public prosecutors. The second half of the book compares the English system with those of the Holy Roman Empire (Germany) and France. He concludes by refuting the popular opinion that the English were strongly indebted to continental models. This work was awarded Cambridge University's Yorke Prize.

Evangelium Iohannis Aethiopicum Aeth. 109 (Text) (Corpus Scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium)
|
Peeters Publishers, 2005-01-01. New 9042916486 In this volume is presented, for the first time, a critical edition of the earliest retrievable text (i.e., the «Versio Antiqua») of the Gospel of John in Classical Ethiopic (Ge'ez). Altogether 21 manuscripts have been collated, representing four different text types and, for the first two of these, three and four sub-types respectively. The «Versio Antiqua» is represented by the first text type, of which, for the most part, the important Mss Abba Garima I and III, dated to 1270 or earlier, have been employed for the basic text. Five appendices are also included, in the last of which is supplied a collation of the «Versio Antiqua» with the critical apparatus of the 27th edition of «Novum Testamentum Graece». This volume, consequently, should prove useful to anyone interested in textual criticism of the New Testament, the textual history of the Ethiopic Gospel of John, or Ge'ez literature generally. 214p (Peeters 2005). 9789042916487.
