To stimulate student discussion and comparison, For reference, Lincoln's address at Gettysburg is included in an appendix. Translations are in English, including introduction and notes, as well as literary and historical commentary. -- AUTHOR: Jud Herrman is Assistant Professor of Classical Studies at Allegheny College. -- FROM THE INTRODUCTION: "Throughout the fifth and fourth centuries BC, at the close of each campaign season the Athenian state honored its war-dead in a public burial ceremony, choosing a prominent orator to give the keynote address. This volume collects all of the surviving state funeral orations from classical Athens. Like tragedy, these speeches present an image of an idealized Athens. The narratives of past Athenian glories found in these speeches feature many of the same mythical tales that were also presented on stage. Like many of the plays, the funeral orations emphasize important themes such as Athenian unity, their aid to suppliants, and their willingness to drive away foreign invaders to protect the other Greeks. The selective version of more recent history found in the funeral orations also highlights these same qualities by focusing on the role of Athens during the Persian Wars (490-479), when the city helped save the other Greeks from invading foreigners, and by passing over other events, such as the Peloponnesian War (431-404), in which Athens opposed fellow Greeks. Although nearly all of the surviving Greek tragedies are set in the distant mythical past (the significant exception is Aeschylus' Persians), the audience in the theater would recognize aspects of contemporary Athens in the depiction of ancient Athenian heroes such as Theseus. The funeral orations draw similar connections more explicitly by presenting a continuous narrative tying the present generation with the great heroes of long ago." Moore, Suzanne. Orr, Gregory.
| Proof. A Trio of Glass Scrolls.
Vashon, WA 2008. - Artist's book, one of a kind book object with text by Gregory Orr, completed for the Scripps College exhibition, "Performing the Book" curated by Kitty Maryatt, Ruth Chandler Williamson Art Gallery, Claremont, CA. The piece is a series of three scrolls wrapped around glass spools each 5-1/4 inches high and 3-7/8 inches in diameter. The first is on Amatl bark "paper" and vellum randomly stitched together with red thread and painted string, lettered and painted in black with the black "letters" or marks becoming increasingly insistent, intense, dense and black as the scroll unfurls. The second is on paper painted and lettered in red, white and black with gold, with various pieces of Japanese papers painted and added with sewing thread stitched in random patterns with loose threads visible - as deconstructed as any Yohji Yamamoto garment. The third scroll is on "museline" fabric. This contains the text of Gregory Orr's poem, machine-stitched in black thread in cursive letters. The zig-zag stitch reflects the swells and finer lines of 19th and early 20th century stylized cursive writing as well as a simultaneously structured and personal style, produced by the attentive pressure and release rhythm of a pointed dip pen. The paper scroll is 33 feet long; the vellum scroll is 18.5 feet; the museline scroll is 30 feet. The three scrolls are housed in a specially made hand-painted gold fabric box, 10 inches high, 12-5/8 inches long and 6-1/4 inches deep. At the bottom of this box is a gold- leafed "floor" with the dividers separating the three scrolls. It is topped with another gilded four-panel board that is removed and laid flat and on which the scrolls are displayed, board 24 x 12 inches, signed and dated by the artist, Suzanne Moore. When initially opening the box, you see the gold as you look down into the glass centers of the scrolls as if the inside of each scroll were gilded. Gregory Orr, professor of English at the University of Virginia, has published nine collections of poetry as well as his well-received memoir, THE BLESSING. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and two poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2003 he was presented the Award in Literature by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and was a Rockefeller Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Culture and Violence. Suzanne Moore has created a unique visualization of Orr's verse. His words would be irresistible to one who makes "black marks on paper." and the reader / viewer is at once introduced or re-introduced to the beauty of the written word. The artist answers Orr's poetical question. She has given exquisite proof of the power of written language with the physical expressions of Orr's words. Moreover, this beautiful work extends the thoughts to a divine level hinted at in the verse. Magic indeed! Text Black marks On paper Or parchment, Painted On bark. What magic At work here? Are these words? Are these A silent saying Of all We hold dear? Are these proof Of our being, Of our being here?. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Greek epigraphy has far more than an incidental role in our understanding of the history of the medical profession in Antiquity. These 525 translated and annotated inscriptions give witness to the daily life of medical practitioners, such as the practice of medicine by a woman in Athens in the fourth century BC; the conscientiousness of public doctors in Hellenistic cities; the tributes paid by the assemblies to deserving practitioners; the career of a doctor in Cos in the second century BC; thanks given by grateful patients; and the organization of competitions between doctors in second-century Ephesus. It is clear from these inscriptions that the training, statutes and working conditions of these men and women varied considerably, until doctors gradually ceased to be itinerant and organized themselves into a professional body with a common code of ethics.

| GOTTA HAVE 'EM: PORTRAITS OF WOMEN BY R. CRUMB - DELUXE LIMITED SIGNED EDITION WITH A COLOR SERIGRAPHIC PRINT
Greybull Press, Los Angeles 2003 - np (224pp), profusely illustrated in b&w. "For the first time ever, R. Crumb's drawings of women are collected in one volume, in chronological order, spanning the 38 years since his pen-and-ink beginnings. The usual fetishes are on display the "built from the ground up" body type, the loving fixation on solid thighs and buttocks but so is Crumb's heart, on his sleeve, in the great tenderness with which he renders the women in his life. They're all here: his high-school crushes, his paramours, the girls and women who tormented him - and to whom he gave it right back - or who caught his eye on the street, and, of course, his wife and fiery sometimes collaborator Aline, and their daughter Sophie. Add to this his mistress of fifteen years and you have not only a catalogue raisonné of Crumb's portraits of women but also a revealing record of a passionate life. Crumb calls it "an autobiography of sorts" and it is these aren't just portraits of women but the most intimate portrait of Crumb's life in love". Limited to one hundred hardbound, clamshell boxed copies, each containing a SIGNED AND NUMBERED 10 x 7 1/2 inch color serigraph print, this deluxe version of "Gotta Have 'Em" illuminates Crumb's lifelong fascination/obsession with the fairer sex. A pristine copy. The photographs in the previously unpublished series Atmos were made in En Camarque, Fos-sure Mer in 2003, and are beautifully represented in this important new artist's book. Hatakeyama photographed this industrial area from two distinct perspectives: from inside the mill located within the town's borders, and from the outskirts of the town itself. The former document the terrifying power of machines man builds to produce goods; the latter reveal the dream-like variations in the surrounding landscape: salt fields, calm waters and pastures. | Novartis Foundation Symposium 251 - Autism - Neural Basis and Treatment Possibilities
Wiley Chichester 2003 - This book draws together contributions from some of the leading investigators in the field of autism to consider specific problem areas in current research. Each contributor brings expertise from a different field, providing a balanced view of the whole spectrum of study of this disorder. It covers four main areas: * Twin and family studies indicate that the heritabilityof the underlying liability to autism exceeds 90% and point to a multifactorial causation, involving a relatively small number of susceptibility genes. The book discusses this issue in detail, along with the problem of why some additional symptoms are associated with autism while others are not. * New techniques are available for examining the neurobiology of autism. The book contains results from imaging studies showing the contributions of different brain regions to autism. It includes neuropathological data and examines the neuropharmacology of autism. * There is considerable discussionconcerning the fundamental psychological deficit in children with autism. There is good evidence that Theory of Mind deficits are associated with autism and this issue is discussed in the book, as are other competing possibilities. * The most important practical question facing medical and psychological practitioners is how to help children with autism. The evidence relating to possible psychological or psychiatric interventions for rehabilitation of children with autismis examined in detail. Drug treatments have generally been disappointing in this field and there is one chapter devoted specifically to this problem. The book focusses ultimately on intervention studies and so is of practical relevance to people interested in helping autistic children. In addition, it provides a very convenient summary of the principal controversies which currently exist in research on autism. (Hardback) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

| Schooling Sex: Libertine Literature and Erotic Education in Italy, France and England 1534-1685
Oxford University Press (United Kingdom), 2003. BRAND NEW HARDBACK 234 High by 156 Wide by deep in mm. (436) how did casanova learn the theory of sex? why did male pornographers write in the characters of women? what happens when philosophers take sexuality seriously and the sex-writers present their outrageous fantasies as an educational, philosophical quest? schooling sex is the first full history of early modern libertine literature and its reception, from aretino and tullia d'aragona in 16th century italy to pepys, rochester, and behn in late 17th century england. james turner explores the idea of sexual education, from the simple instructional dialogue to the advanced experiments of the philosophical libertine, analysing the hard-core curiculum that defined sexuality centuries before the marquis de sade. he shows how close, nuanced readings of neglected but compelling texts-like the searingly explicit alcibiade fanciullo, l'escole des filles, and aloisia sigea-link them to larger issues of gender politics, aesthetics, literary criticism, sexual history, medical science, mind-body philosophy, and the educational revolution. | The Death of God and the Meaning of Life
Taylor & Francis(Routledge), 2003. BRAND NEW HARDBACK 5.433 by 8.504 inches. This book is printed on demand. this question 'what is the meaning of life? ' is a preoccupying question in this post-modern, post-religious scientific world. young presents a historical overview, from plato to foucault, of the many major figures in philosophy that have hadwhat is the meaning of life? in the post-modern, post-religious scientific world, this question is becoming a preoccupation. but it also has a long history: many major figures in philosophy had something to say on the subject, as julian young so vividly illustrates in this thought-provoking book. part one of the book presents an historical overview of philosophers from plato to hegel and marx who have believed in some sort of meaning of life, either in some supposed 'other' world or in the future of this world. part two looks at what happened when the traditional structures that provided life with meaning ceased to be believed. with nothing to take their place, these structures gave way to the threat of nihilism, to the appearance that life is meaningless. julian young looks at the responses to this threat in the work of nietzsche, heidegger, sartre, camus, foucault and derrida. this compelling and highly engaging exploration of fundamental values will captivate anyone who's ever asked themselves where life's meaning (if there is one) really lies. it also makes a perfect historical introduction to philosophy.
