"Questa esposizione è la prima delle manifestazioni in programma per le celebrazioni del IV Centenario della fondazione dell'Accademia dei Lincei. Curata dal Socio Antonio Cadei, la mostra alla quale il Presidente della Repubblica ha concesso l'Alto Patronato, costituisce l'occasione di presentare a un vasto pubblico il ricchissimo patrimonio librario conservato nella biblioteca, con l'esposizione di 176 volumi presso la sede dell'Istituto Nazionale della Grafica (Palazzo Fontana di Trevi, Piazza Poli a Roma), nel periodo compreso tra il 27 novembre 2002 e il 26 gennaio 2003. La mostra, che è dedicata alla memoria della Prof.ssa Angiola Maria Romanini, principale promotrice dell'iniziativa, prima della sua scomparsa (18 gennaio 2002) è stata organizzata da una Commissione Scientifica composta dai Soci Proff. Oreste Ferrari (presidente), Ignazio Baldelli, Vittore Branca, Antonio Cadei e Angelo Falzea. La Biblioteca dell'Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei e Corsiniana ha origine dall'unione di due nuclei storici distinti: la biblioteca fondata dal Cardinale Neri Corsini, nipote di papa Clemente XII, inaugurata come biblioteca pubblica fin dal 1754, e quella dell'Accademia dei Lincei, trasferita nell'attuale sede di Palazzo Corsini, nel 1883. Il progetto della mostra intende sottolineare la vastità di interessi rivelata dal materiale conservato nella biblioteca, successivamente accresciuta anche da particolarissimi lasciti, come il Fondo Caetani, che comprende rari manoscritti arabi, persiani, etiopici, indiani o come il Fondo Verginelli Rota, composto esclusivamente da esoterici testi di Alchimia. Il materiale prescelto comprende preziosi manoscritti in pergamena e in carta, scritti e illustrati tra il XII e il XVIII secolo, sia in ambito occidentale, con un'ampia selezione di codici prodotti nelle diverse regioni italiane oltreché in Francia, Spagna, Germania e nelle Fiandre, sia in ambito orientale, con un notevole numero di codici persiani ed arabi, greci, ebraici, indiani e provenienti dall'estremo oriente. I 156 codici posseduti dall'Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, affiancati da 20 volumi richiesti in prestito a biblioteche italiane e francesi, sono suddivisi in sezioni tematiche. La mostra è articolata in due parti: I PRIMI LINCEI e LA BIBLIOTECA. La prima parte sarà dedicata alla storia dell'Accademia dei Lincei, fondata, il 17 agosto 1603, dal diciottenne Federico Cesi, a Roma, nel palazzo di famiglia. Il giovane marchese condivideva con tre amici fraterni - l'olandese Johannes Van Heeck e gli umbri Anastasio de Filiis e Francesco Stelluti - l'ideale di un'intensa collaborazione scientifica "per cui ciascuno doveva essere nello stesso tempo maestro e discepolo degli altri". I primi quattro Lincei, come molti altri dopo di loro, sottoscrissero un albo e assunsero un impegno preciso: coltivare la Sapienza, indagando tutte le scienze della natura con libera osservazione sperimentale. Scelsero come emblema la lince, animale cui era attribuita eccezionale acutezza di vista e che presto divenne il simbolo del metodo scientifico adottato dalla nuova Accademia. La regola lincea fu stesa da Cesi nel Linceografo: il manoscritto è esposto accanto ai Gesta Lynceorum, che contengono i verbali delle prime riunioni accademiche e il celebre oroscopo linceo. Completano questa prima parte gli splendidi codici di botanica realizzati per l'opera enciclopedica sulla natura ideata da Federico Cesi, costituiti da 1365 tavole dipinte, i taccuini di viaggio di Johannes Van Heeck e numerosi manoscritti tuttora conservati nell'Archivio Linceo, contenenti fra l'altro le prescrizioni per i primi soci e le loro firme autografe, tra le quali quella di Galileo Galilei. La seconda parte della mostra, LA BIBLIOTECA, è divisa in sette sezioni. Nella I sezione, dedicata all'Araldica, sono esposti preziosi manoscritti con pagine di incipit dai margini decorati con ricche bordure vegetali con fiori, frutti, animali e putti, nelle quali lo stemma del committente compare come chiaro segno del possesso; accanto a questi sono codici come le Aedes Barberinae, la cui funzione precipua è la celebrazione dinastica di solito riservata a stemmi e imprese, genealogie legate alla glorificazione dei casati e raccolte di stemmi cittadini con i nomi e i blasoni dei notabili locali. Nella sezione II, dal titolo Ozi dilettevoli ed eruditi, si espone una raccolta di cento scenari teatrali, un canzoniere con testi illustrati da eleganti figure in costume, un trattato sulla scherma, una collezione di gemme antiche figurate e resoconti di viaggio, che testimoniano, con le loro immagini, il tempo dedicato allo svago, al divertimento erudito e al gusto per l'antiquaria. I due volumi con gli Scenari Corsini, animati dalle raffigurazioni di maschere come Pantalone, Zanni e Graziano, costituiscono fonte preziosissima per la conoscenza del repertorio della commedia dell'arte; mentre informazioni curiose sul modo di viaggiare nel Seicento e sui paesi esotici visitati vengono fornite dal diario manoscritto di François de la Boullaye le Gouz, riccamente illustrato con scene di vita orientale e raffigurazioni di miti indiani. La sezione III, intitolata Le Lettere, è suddivisa in tre parti: Antichi, Moderni, Islam. Specchio fedele degli interessi letterari dei "toscanissimi" Corsini, i libri umanistici qui esposti, per la maggior parte fiorentini, furono scelti dai fondatori della biblioteca più per il contenuto e per le qualità editoriali che ne rendevano gradevole la lettura che per la raffinatezza delle decorazioni. La bianchissima e raffinata pergamena, vergata con l'elegante nuova scrittura umanistica e decorata con la bordura "a bianchi girari", accomuna i codici che figurano nelle due parti di questa sezione dedicate agli autori Antichi e Moderni. In quest'ultima sottosezione è inoltre esposto un gruppo di codici di argomento letterario databili al XIV secolo: una Divina Commedia, probabilmente realizzata ad Arezzo, un elegante Roman de la Rose parigino, un romanzo cavalleresco, il Roman de Tristan, realizzato in area veneta. A conclusione della sezione sono i manoscritti appartenenti alla letteratura medievale e rinascimentale dell'Islam; appaiono di particolare pregio artistico i codici persiani che contengono opere tra le più significative di quella letteratura, quali il Quintetto di Nizami di Ganja, per secoli uno dei soggetti prediletti dell'arte libraria islamica. La IV sezione, I Templari, ruota intorno a un famoso e autorevole testimone della Regle du Temple, probabilmente eseguito in Francia nella seconda metà del XIII secolo, uno dei soli dieci esemplari noti della Regola dei Templari approvata a Troyes nel 1129. Nel 1119 un gruppo di cavalieri aveva prestato solenne giuramento davanti al patriarca di Gerusalemme: l'impegno era quello di scortare i pellegrini che giungevano in Terrasanta, osservando i voti di povertà, castità e obbedienza. Due stili di vita apparentemente inconciliabili, quello monastico e quello militare, si fusero, per la prima volta nel mondo cristiano, nella Regola dell'Ordine del Tempio. In quasi duecento anni di storia i Templari, tra i principali protagonisti della lotta contro i musulmani, accumularono enormi ricchezze, grazie anche a bottini di guerra, lasciti e abili operazioni finanziarie; costruirono imponenti fortezze e ricche commende, in Palestina e in Europa, diffondendosi capillarmente sul territorio. Fu Filippo il Bello, re di Francia, che, ritenendosi minacciato dal potere politico-economico dei Templari, persuase il pontefice a istruire un processo che si concluse nel 1312 con la condanna e la soppressione dell'ordine. Al codice corsiniano della Règle, sono affiancati tre codici della Biblioteca Casanatense, probabilmente provenienti da una casa templare francese, come attesta la nota di possesso presente in un esemplare del gruppo (non esposta). Una delle sezioni più ampie della mostra è la V, intitolata Dal testo sacro al libro di preghiera, suddivisa in quattro sottosezioni: la Bibbia e il Corano, Il Commento e l'interpretazione, La Liturgia, La Devozione. Testi sacri del mondo occidentale e orientale, La Bibbia e il Corano rappresentano il libro per eccellenza. I raffinati corani, realizzati con materiali pregiati, riprendono nei frontespizi, nelle sontuose legature e soprattutto nella calligrafia alcuni dei principali motivi ornamentali dell'Islam antico. Minutamente copiato su pergamena sottilissima è il testo biblico nel nuovo modello elaborato dal mercato librario parigino nel Duecento: la bibbia tascabile, destinata alla consultazione da parte degli studenti dell'Università. Ad illustrare Il Commento e l'Interpretazione del testo biblico sono testi dei Padri della Chiesa e degli esegeti medievali, tra le altre tre testi dell'abate Gioacchino da Fiore, un piccolo codice con il De mysterio cymbalorum di Arnaldo da Villanova e un codice con le opere di Raimondo Lullo in catalano. Spicca fra tutti un piccolo codice giunto in Italia da un monastero della penisola iberica: si tratta di un rarissimo esemplare del Commentario all'Apocalisse del monaco Beato di Liébana, in parte copiato nella caratteristica scrittura visigotica; unico esemplare di piccole dimensioni tra le 25 copie superstiti, il codice corsiniano è illuminato dalle miniature visionarie che caratterizzano i più noti codici del Beato. Gli altri manoscritti non contengono illustrazioni, ma in tutti le iniziali dei testi sono decorate con motivi floreali o animali per facilitare la lettura e impreziosire libri destinati all'uso quotidiano, alla liturgia o allo studio. La produzione di epoca romanica è rappresentata, per l'Italia, da un volumetto con le Epistole di Agostino ornate in elegante stile "geometrico" e da un'importante raccolta di leggende di santi napoletani trascritte in grafia beneventana; un Evangeliario greco proveniente dalla Calabria testimonia invece la presenza della cultura monastica orientale nella penisola. A small plexiglass box containing a collection of images of ten Gehry projects which offer insight into the working process of the architect. Images of drawings and process models, detail images, etc are included. Some of the projects illustrated include the Venice Gateway in Italy, the Ohr-O'Keefe Museums in Biloxi, Mississippi, the proposed New York Times headquarters, the Museo Puente de Vida in Panama City, Panama, the Center for Human Dignity/Jerusalem Museum of Tolerance, the MIT/Stata Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and New York's Astor Place amongst others. Each project has one information card and five cards of images, all laid into a plexiglass box with numbered colophon card and a few other cards, with printed wrap-around band. A fine clean unmarked piece in near fine slipcase with a single scratch, and near fine wrap-around with light abrasion/shadow from former price sticker.
