With an engraved, illustrated leaf from an extremely rare two-volume picture-Bible, printed in The Hague by Daniel Langeweg, circa 1750. The original leaf is tipped-in and contains a full-page wood engraving, executed by Jan Besoet. Includes a brief essay by Ruth Adomeit on the history of this Bible. Pall Bohne has added a note explaining how he made the endpapers using a technique called "Dutch Gilt," which is contemporary with Langeweg's "Bybel." Jacket is unclipped and protected with a fold-on sleeve. Typical for this edition, the jacketed book fits tightly in the slipcase (I recommend storing the jacket separate; the book is more attractive without it). Excellent presentation of Matheson's popular romantic fantasies SOMEWHERE IN TIME (originally titled BID TIME RETURN) and WHAT DREAMS MAY COME. Both novels are complete in one sturdy, clothbound volume with a special foreword by the author. Exclusive to the deluxe issue is a haunting James Hagopian photograph showing a pocket watch and cameo portrait. The photograph originally appeared in a botched version on the jacket of the 1975 first edition of BID TIME RETURN. Restored here to its original beauty, the photo is included as a frontispiece in the book and again on the outside of the slipcase. Both novels have been adapted successfully for film. SOMEWHERE IN TIME was brought to the screen in 1980, with a screenplay by Matheson and a cast featuring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour, and Christopher Plummer. A good quality reprint of the two "Travel" volumes from the 4 -volume catalogue of Major J. R. Abbey's sumptuous collection of English books that were illustrated in aquatint or lithography and issued between 1770 and 1860. From a contemporary review of the first edition: " In the first of the two Travel volumes Abbey begins with the World and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, then passes on to Europe and Africa, each continent having subdivisions by country. The next (and final) volume opens with Asia (over 200 pages with many subdivisions), and passes on to Oceania, Antarctica, and lastly the Americas (with three main, considerably subdivided, sections).The collations of the individual books are full and detailed, very good features being that each individual plate is listed by title and the exact form quoted in which the draughtsman and engraver have signed it. When this is related to the fact that all artists and engravers names are indexed, one of the great values of this series of catalogues at once becomes apparent. It forms, from this particular aspect, a list of artists, and of identifiable engravings by or after them, which richly supplements the books of artistic reference previously available.[These are] spaciously conceived, informative, and beautifully produced catalogues. He served as the book conservator at Southern Methodist University, during which time he completed this miniature edition. The shaped book is housed in a pigskin box edged with marbled paper. Accompanied by a rare 7.25” X 9.25” black and white studio photograph of Hepburn taken by famed photographer George Platt Lynes, circa 1938. Letter has one center fold, else very fine condition. Photograph has light edge wear. Glue remnants on the verso do not affect visibility of the backstamp, “George Platt Lynes / 440 Madison Avenue, New York”. Fine condition. From 1932 to the mid 1940s, the New York studio of George Platt Lynes led the U.S. fashion photography industry. In his book, “Intimate Companions”, author David Leddick describes a photo session with Katharine Hepburn in February 1938, that might have produced this photograph. “Katharine Hepburn must have wandered in during this period (February 1938) because there is an unlikely photograph of her in a Gone with the Wind-style ruffled ballgown, with branches behind her and the stuffed raccoon at her feet. She also consented to have deer antlers attached to her head in one shot...Hepburn evidently did not find the proofs of these pictures amusing, though there are prints in private collections.” (Intimate Companions, by David Leddick, Macmillan: 2001, page 101) Lynes closed his New York studio in 1946 and left for Hollywood to be the chief photographer for Vogue Studios. When he returned to New York in 1948, he had lost his place in the fashion world and never regained his financial success. Katharine Hepburn holds the record for winning the most Academy Awards for Best Actress. She won four times from a total of twelve nominations during her sixty-two year film career.
