Premier roman de l'exile tcheque a avoir ete ecrit en francais, L'Immortalite apparait telle une oeuvre charniere ou, veritablement, s'affirme le style de Kundera. Oeuvre singuliere, qui, en une construction complexe et ingenieuse, est avant tout le recit d'une quete tant esthetique qu'existentielle. En tant que genre litteraire, le Roman se fait ici presque manifeste, appartenant a la memoire collective, dans un monde cependant regi par l'instantaneite, et son corollaire : l'oubli. Apres la mort accidentelle d'Agnes, sa soeur prendra sa place. Ainsi lui confere t'elle une part d'immortalite. Mais, par concomitance, l'etre ne devient plus que representation ; l'image, plus reelle alors que l'objet. Cet abandon de soi en vue d'incarner un autre, ces additions successives d'attributs et d'oripeaux pour finir par faire de son unicite une convention, fut une deviance que Lacan - a la suite de Freud - avait observe puis synthetise sous l'expression "stade du miroir". Sous l'oeil de "Dieu-photographe", Kundera denonce les egarements de cette societe occidentale, dominee par l'image, le reflet, les erreurs de jugement, la perception qui devient dogme. Et son desir presque symptomatique de la perpetuation, ici etudiee au regard de faits historiques. A quoi bon ? L'etre, inmanquablement, retournera au neant de son immortalite.

Orion Books, New York 1990 - Book has light bumps to the upper corners but is otherwise in excellent condition. The dust jacket is only very lightly worn, not price clipped. Inscribed on the front free endpaper with several lines by the author, Glines. What makes this book very special is the presence of a large bookplate on the front pastedown which reads, "Special Book Plate for C. V. Glines book ATTACK ON YAMAMOTO. Autographed by pilots who flew the mission on 18 April, 1943." It is then signed below by the author, Glines, as well as by Louis R. Kittel, Besby F. Holmes, Lawrence Graebner, Doug Canning, and Julius Jacobson. There is what appears to be a limitation number at the lower, left of the plate which reads, 42/46. Portrait du peintre qui fut l’une des figures inspiratrices de cette remarquable artiste d’ici, trop tôt disparue, hélas jamais rencontrée et dont l’oeuvre crystallise cette notion de “littérArture” qui nous est chère. Fascinée par les écrivains, en sus de quelques peintres (Giacometti en restera la référence spirituelle en raison d’une certaine proximité graphique dans les dessins et les sculptures), elle en portraitisa plus d’un avec qui nous partageons quelque affinité de lecteur, dont Gustave Roud. Le dessin est présenté sous ingénieux étui-boîte de jacques Menétrey , accompagné par l’ouvrage collectif consacré au sujet, tiré de la bibliothèque de l’auteur, ce qu’atteste sa signature sur la garde: - A Bram van Velde/Celui qui ne peut se servir de mots, Fata Morgana 1975. Broché 29 x 23, couverture or-ange à rabats avec titre imprimé en blanc. Le faux-titre précise “Celui qui ne peut se servir de mots”, recense les contributions de Alechinsky, Asse, Beckett (plusieurs fois portraitisé par Loul), Blanchot, Bonnefoy, Butor, Coutin, Dotremont, Dupin, Esteban, Frémon, Gaspar, Hebey, Horovitz, Jabès, Juliet, Kurz, Laporte, Levinas, Mason, Mathieu, Messagier, Micha, Noël, Putman, Schneider, Starobinsky, Toreilles. First edition, inscribed by Ness on the title page "To Arnold and Mrs Gates / in appreciation of your advice, support and friendship." Gates is among those thanked in the book's acknowledgments, as he should be, for the accompanying sheaf of letters from Ness (mostly TLsS, about 45 in number, or 59 pages, between 1953 and 1968) attest to Gates' crucial role in the publication of this book. "The Regular Army" was a long time in coming; in one letter of August 6, 1955, Ness first suggests "The Army on the Eve of the Civil War" as a title! There is considerable discussion of his progress on the manuscript (Gates critiqued different drafts of each chapter), general Civil War talk, Round Table gossip, Lincoln lore, and so forth -- even a formal 1960 agreement between Ness and Gates authorizing Gates to act as his agent for this book. Also present are rather harsh rejection letters from Holt, Rinehart and Winston and Harcourt, Brace & World. A fascinating archive of letters, showing in detail the long-term gestation of this book. White rag paper broadside, approximate dimensions H 25.5 inches x L 14 inches, with black, green, and silver traffic stoplight style illustration; text at bottom of broadside provided as FULL MOON BY REYNOLDS PRICE | A WORLD PREMIER IN THE EDUORA WELTY NEW PLAY SERIES | DIRECTED BY JANE REID PETTY | NEW STAGE THEATRE 1990. Broadside bordered with black paper as background and handsomely presented in an aluminum frame, total dimensions H 29 inches x L 17 inches. Eudora Welty enjoyed a long friendship with Reynolds Price since his student days at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Price contributed the Foreword to Welty's 1989 book PHOTOGRAPHS. Additionally Welty sat on the board of directors of the New Stage Theatre and lent her name to a long-running new play series. Birken -Sigmund von Birken (* 25. April 1626 in Wildstein bei Eger, 21. Juni 1681 in Nürnberg), Mitglied unter anderem des Pegnesischen Blumenordens zu Nürnberg, war ein bedeutender Dichter des Pegnesischen Blumenordens in Nürnberg und der einzige freie Schriftsteller des Barock. Birken war der Sohn von Daniel Betulius, dem Ortspfarrer von Wildstein bei Eger in Böhmen. 1629 wurde die protestantische Familie von dort aus Glaubensgründen vertrieben und flüchtete nach Nürnberg, der Heimatstadt der Mutter. Bis zu seiner Nobilitierung 1654 trug der Dichter den Namen Sigmund (oder Sigismundus) Betulius. Nach dem Besuch der Lateinschule des Heilig-Geist-Spitals in Nürnberg studierte Birken 1643 bis 1644 die Rechtswissenschaften in Jena. Zur Jahreswende 1644/45 brach er sein Studium ohne Abschluss ab und ging nach Nürnberg zurück. Dort verfasste er im Frühjahr 1645 sein erstes größeres Werk, die Fortsetzung der Pegnitzschäferei und wurde unter dem Pseudonym "Floridan" Mitglied des Pegnesischen Blumenordens. Vom Ende des Jahres bis Oktober 1646 wirkte er als Hofmeister (Lehrer und Erzieher) der Prinzen Anton Ulrich von Braunschweig und Lüneburg-Wolfenbüttel und Ferdinand Albrecht von Braunschweig und Lüneburg-Wolfenbüttel am Hof in Wolfenbüttel. Nachdem er dort - wohl unfreiwillig - entlassen worden war, folgte eine zweijährige Wanderung durch Norddeutschland, wo er u.a. Johann Rist kennenlernte und die ihn bis nach Rostock führte. Sein Geld verdiente Birken erneut als Hofmeister. Im November 1648 kehrte er nach Nürnberg zurück. In den folgenden beiden Jahren wurde er über die Grenzen seiner Heimat hinaus als Dichter bekannt: 1649 und 1650 tagten in Nürnberg Gesandte aus ganz Deutschland und Schweden, die über die Bestimmungen zur Ausführung des Westfälischen Friedens verhandelten. Birken machte sich als Poet einen Namen mit Lobesversen auf den Leiter der kaiserlichen Delegation, Octavio Piccolomini, und führte mit Nürnberger Schülern sein Friedensspiel Teutscher Kriegs Ab- und Friedens-Einzug auf. Auch in den folgenden Jahren wirkte Birken als Dichter und Erzieher. Er versuchte, sich als freier Schriftsteller zu etablieren, konnte aber von dieser Tätigkeit nicht leben. In Gottlieb von Windischgrätz, mit dem er in Nürnberg Freundschaft geschlossen hatte, fand er einen einflussreichen Förderer am Hof in Wien. Im Mai 1654 wurde er mit dessen Unterstützung von Kaiser Ferdinand III. in den Adelsstand erhoben und zum kaiserlichen Hofpfalzgrafen ernannt. Seitdem nannte er sich "von Birken". Die Bekanntschaft mit Windischgrätz führte 1658 dahin, dass Birken durch Herzog Wilhelm IV. von Sachsen-Weimar in die Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft aufgenommen wurde. Birken wurde der Gesellschaftsname "der Erwachsene" und das Motto "zu größern Ehren" verliehen. Als Emblem ist ihm das "Weiße duppelte Veilchen" zugedacht worden. Im Köthener Gesellschaftsbuch der Fruchtbringenden Gesellschaft findet sich Birken als 681. Mitglied eingetragen. Schon 1644 war Birken von Philipp von Zesen in die Deutschgesinnte Genossenschaft aufgenommen worden - wahrscheinlich ohne dass er davon etwas wusste. 1662 wurde er Präsident des "Pegnesischen Blumenordens". Die Dichtergesellschaft war 1644 von Georg Philipp Harsdörffer und Johann Klaj ins Leben gerufen worden, beide waren in der Zwischenzeit verstorben. Unter Birken als dem "Oberhirten" vermehrte sich die Mitgliederzahl um ein Vielfaches. Sein Verdienst ist es, als erster auch Frauen in eine Dichtergruppe aufgenommen zu haben. Bis zu Birkens Tod verfassten die Ordensmitglieder gemeinsam unter seiner Federführung hunderte von Schäfergedichten zu Geburten, Hochzeiten und Todesfällen, die in kleinen Schriften als so genannte Gelegenheitsdichtung veröffentlicht wurden. Birken, einer der vielfältigsten und produktivsten Autoren des 17. Jahrhunderts, trat außer als Schäferdichter auch als Verfasser von Andachtsliedern, Geschichtsschriften und Historiendramen hervor. Mit dem Donaustrand, einer 1664 anlässlich der Türkenkriege veröffentlichten Beschreibung historischer Stätten am Donaulauf, landete er einen echten Bestseller auf dem Buchmarkt: Alle 2.000 Exemplare des Werks waren innerhalb weniger Wochen ausverkauft, es folgten über 20 weitere Auflagen. Seine umfangreichste Schrift ist der mit hunderten von Kupferstichen bebilderte Spiegel der Ehren des Erzhauses Österreich von 1668, in dem auf 1.500 Seiten die Geschichte der Habsburger vom Mittelalter bis zu Kaiser Maximilian I. nacherzählt wird. In ähnlichen Schriften verherrlichte Birken das Welfenhaus (Guelfis, 1669) und die sächsischen Kurfürsten (Sächsischer Heldensaal, 1677). In seinem Vorwort zur Aramena Anton Ulrichs von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel setzte er sich als erster Autor in deutscher Sprache theoretisch mit der Literaturgattung des Romans auseinander. Weniger bekannt ist Birken als Übersetzer lateinischer und französischer Texte und anonymer "ghostwriter" für andere Autoren und Verleger. Ein gutes Beispiel für diese Tätigkeit ist der Orbis sensualium pictus von Johann Amos Comenius, ein bis in das 19. Jahrhundert gebrauchtes Schulbuch zum Erlernen von Fremdsprachen, das Birken nicht nur bearbeitet, sondern vollständig neu konzipiert hat. Der deutsche Wortschatz wurde so maßgeblich durch Birken geprägt! Birken spannte im Lauf der Jahre ein engmaschiges Netz von Kontakten und hatte Verbindungen zu prominenten Schriftstellern des Barock wie Johann Wilhelm von Stubenberg, Catharina Regina von Greiffenberg, Georg Neumark und Justus Georg Schottel. Er wirkte als Anlaufstelle für alle möglichen literarischen Dienstleistungen und wurde dafür von den Zeitgenossen hoch geachtet. Gemeinsam mit dem Nürnberger Theologen Johann Michael Dilherr schuf er einige emblematische Erbauungsbücher, gemeinsam mit Komponisten wie Johann Erasmus Kindermann viele geistliche Lieder. Außerdem arbeitete Birken mit den besten Künstlern seiner Zeit zusammen, so mit Jacob und Joachim von Sandrart. Diesen unterstützte er als im Hintergrund wirkender Autor bei dessen kunsttheoretischem Werk Teutsche Akademie der edlen Bau-, Bild- und Malereikünste (1675 und 1679) und bei dessen Übersetzung von Vincenzo Cartaris Le imagini colla sposizione degli dei degli antichi (Deutscher Titel: Iconologia Deorum oder Abbildung der Götter welche von den Alten verehret wurden) (1680). Gegen Ende seines Lebens veröffentlichte Birken als Summe seiner Erfahrungen die Teutsche Rede-bind- und Dicht-Kunst. In diesem Werk, einer der letzten typischen Barock-Poetiken, zitiert er hunderte seiner eigenen Gedichte als vorbildlich für den Schüler der Dichtkunst. Diese wurde im 17. Jahrhundert nicht wie heute als Sache der Genies betrachtet, sondern als erlernbares Handwerk.Dementsprechend werden Hunderte von Regeln vorgeführt, die der Schüler der Poesie erlernen soll, um "gute" Gedichte schreiben zu können. Sigmund von Birken verstarb am 12. Juni 1681 in Nürnberg und wurde auf dem Johannisfriedhof beigesetzt. Nach seinem Tod ging es mit dem Pegnesischen Blumenorden bald bergab. Er existiert heute noch als Verein von Nürnberger Bürgern, die stolz auf ihre literarische Vergangenheit verweisen. Einmalig und von unschätzbarem Wert für die weitere Erforschung der Barockliteratur ist das Erbe Birkens: Er hat der Nachwelt ca. 10.000 Manuskriptseiten und ca. 2.000 Briefe von 400 Korrespondenten hinterlassen. Er wird heute im Germanischen Nationalmuseum in Nürnberg aufbewahrt. An den Manuskripten kann man studieren, dass Birken auch ein begabter Zeichner war und komponieren konnte. Auf dieser bislang noch nicht ausgeschöpften Grundlage wird man zu einer Neubewertung von Birkens zentraler Rolle in der Literatur des 17. Jahrhunderts kommen müssen. Der riesengroße literarische Nachlass Birkens wurde bis zum heutigen Tag nicht annähernd gewürdigt. Obwohl man seine zentrale Rolle für die Entwicklung der Barockliteratur im engeren und der nationalen deutschen Literatur im weiteren Sinne oft hervorgekehrt hat, blieb es bei relativ allgemeinen Wertungen und oft auch Unverständnis. Bis dato gibt es keine vernünftige Ausgabe seiner Werke, woran auch die oft dilettantisch kommentierende Edition seiner Werke und Korrespondenz nichts geändert hat. Die Tagebücher, von denen es eine Ausgabe in den 1970er Jahren gab, sind durchweg schlecht kommentiert und können dem Benutzer nicht wirklich helfen. Die Edition der Autobiographie stellt ein nur ansatzweise brauchbares, in der Darstellung leider völlig schiefes Produkt dar, und der Briefwechsel mit Catharina von Greiffenberg bringt, außer einem alles überwuchernden Lesartenverzeichnis und oberlehrerhaften Erläuterungen, keine Erkenntnisse, die nicht schon lange der Forschung bekannt wären. Leider scheint nach so vielen Jahren hier die einmalige Chance vergeben worden zu sein, eine die Editionsregeln der Germanistik beachtende und die Sachverhalte wirklich erläuternde Ausgabe zu veranstalten. Auch ein solides Werkverzeichnis fehlt bis heute; die beiden existierenden Bibliographien sind stark lückenhaft und insbesondere Dünnhaupts Verzeichnis strotzt so vor Fehlern, dass es praktisch unbrauchbar ist. Alles in allem verdient Birken endlich eine auf klaren Regeln aufbauende Erschließung seines Schaffens, das für Generationen von literarisch interessierten Menschen ein Vorbild war.

Book Description Caravaggio's Roman altarpiece, Death of the Virgin, in the Louvre, is often considered shockingly realistic and radically secular in content. Pamela Askew reveals its imagery to be as rich in metaphor and allusion as it is salient in its dramatic immediacy. The painting, notorious for its rejection by the fathers of the church of the Discalced Carmelites in Rome, S. Maria della Scala, was nevertheless praised by Caravaggio's contemporaries. Askew's analysis of the interdependency of formal and iconographical elements stresses Caravaggio's emphasis upon the body of the Virgin and offers new suggestions of why the image, despite its theological orthodoxy, may not have accorded with the Marian ideals of the reformed order. An earlier dating for the work is also proposed and its historical background enriched by new information on the hitherto obscure patron, Laerzio Cherubini. Caravaggio is shown to allude to Cherubini's active interest in a philanthropic institution for women with which the church of S. Maria della Scala was allied, through his exceptional inclusion of the figure of the Magdalen in a scene of the Dormition. Askew seeks to place the Death of the Virgin within the artistic and literary as well as social, theological, and spiritual contexts that contributed to its pictorial shaping. The Roman congregation of the Discalced Carmelites is investigated as is the tenor of its spirituality, and Caravaggio's formulation of the theme is interpreted in relation to his own pictorial synthesis of time passed and time future in time present. .

They were all issued in very small (under 100 copies usually) chapbooks ,signed by the authors. This issue is 16 pages plus stapled covers .There were 126 copies of which 100 copies were freely distributed and 26 were for presentation.All copies are signed Forrest J. Ackerman on the limitation page.It contains the poems and graduation speech of the author ,taken from his #101 Blue Bond Composition Book which were written between the ages of 10 to 12 ( 1927 - 1929 ).Needless to say this is their first publication.and probably only. This classic work, first published in 1952, covers in detail the history of books from Caxton down to the incorporation of the Stationers’ Company, discussing the evidence for public literacy, the regulation of the book trade, the demand for books, the authors, translators, and printers of early books, and their methods. It is a history of society at the opening of the Art of Printing, without which civilization as we know it could hardly have taken shape at all - a chapter in the human story, unique in its significance and remarkably obscure before this book was first published. In the second volume of his classic English Books and Readers, first published in 1965, H. S. Bennett continues the story down to the end of the reign of Elizabeth I. His purpose is to give an account of the total output of books and pamphlets in this period, irrespective of their qualities as literature. He reveals a picture of astonishing variety and fertility. The part of it which concerns the production of imaginative, philosophical and religious books is fairly well known; but by far the larger proportion of the output of the printing presses consisted of such diverse products as histories and geographies, moral treatises, translations from the Classics, legal and medical text-books, writings on sports and pastimes, seamanship, primers of instruction in languages and music, the great and famous corpus of travel books, volumes of ballads and verses, and cheap and sensational pamphlets on such topics as monstrous births, strange creatures, the evil practices of witches and the diabolical objectives of traitors. Besides showing how the printers, booksellers and their allies made this enormously diverse mass of material readily available to the Elizabethan reading public, the author examines as well the relations between writers and readers. The third volume of English Books and Readers, first published in 1970, carries the story of the English book trade down to the eve of the Civil War. The author gives an account of the total output of books and pamphlets in the period, irrespective of their qualities as literature.
