Greg Gorman: Volume 1
CPC 1989 - With 89 black and white plates include 2 three-page fold-out nudes. Internally clean and tight, light shelfwear to boards, dusting to top edge, Near Fine in a Very Good dust jacket that is lightly edgeworn, soiled and unevenly sunned. ~ These photos were taken between 1982-89 and appear to have been hand-picked by the photographer, Greg Gorman. You've seen many of them before, they are often the defining portrait of an actor from that era. Gorman carves his subject out of light and turns their trademark faces into his own art. It almost makes one believe that a photograph can steal a soul. (Which would go a long way toward explaining the behavior of Charlie Sheen, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Winona Ryder, and many of the other celebrities whose portraits are included here.) Survival in Sarajevo: Jews, Bosnia and the Lessons of the Past [SIGNED]
Berlin: Central Europe Center. 1/20. Portfolio of 13 silver gelatin prints, matted, captioned by hand and signed. Images 12 x 16 inches. B/W photographs documenting buildings and people in Sarajevo 1989 and 1993-1994, including a Muslim boy evacuating out of Bosnia to Israel with the help of Jewish-sponsored rescue convoys. Evocative images include Jacob Finci, President of LA Benevolencija in the Jewish Museum of Bosnia; Zayneba Hardaga, the first Muslim to receive a righteous gentile award; keys taken by Jews leaving Spain in 1492 from the collection of the Jewish Museum of Bosnia; Sarajevo University Library, and the Sarajevo Jewish Cemetery, which was the front line of the Bosnian War. The project was underwritten by The Doron Foundation (Tel Aviv) Mordechai Mevorach (director) and The Righteous Persons Foundation (Santa Monica) Steven Spielberg (chairman). Fine condition. Housed in original gray linen clamshell box, bumped with some cloth separation along rear hinge. As a documentary photographer specializing in contemporary Jewish life in Central Europe, when Sarajevo was besieged I wanted to see how a post-Holocaust Jewish community would react to war and "ethnic cleansing'" for the second time in fifty years. I wondered; would all the Jews leave? would those remaining lock their doors, letting their neighbors fight it out among themselves? After all, this was a war between Serbs, Croats and Muslims, in which the Jews play no contentious part. and while the majority of Jews fled the city, a vital core remained to stand with their friends and neighbors. Working together, they have turned history on its head, because for the first time during a modern European war, Jews are saving and protecting Christians and Muslims, wherever, whenever they can." Edward Serotta.

Henri Crouzel (Translated By A.S. Worrall)
Origen
T.& T. Clark Ltd., Edinburgh 1989 - Book Description : 1989, 1st Edition cloth hardback with original dustjacket; 278 pages with 3 indices; G/G+. Born in around 185 AD, Origen of Alexandria was one of the early fathers of the Eastern Christian Church, and a theologian who was a prolific Christian writer. A controversial figure, Origen was proclaimed a heretic in 533 but later inspired the great humanists Pico della Mirandella and Erasmus. One of Origen's central beliefs was that the Bible should not be interpreted too literally, that if its text did not speak to you about how you might advance towards Christ-like perfection, you had misunderstood it. It was also his desire for others to see and hear Christ through the Bible. Professor Crouzel is one of the foremost scholar's of Origen. His book provides an orderly exposition of this early theologian's life, works, and achievements. Part 1 of the book entitled "Personality" gives a biographical account of Origen. In Part 2, Crouzel examine Origen's exegesis of scripture and his spirituality. The final part of the book deals with Origen's often controversial theology - his conception of the beginnings of mankind, the "Three Persons", and his doctrines of Purgatory, Resurrection and Apocatastasis. Professor Crouzel's principal concern has been to demonstrate Origen's orthodoxy, and to show how rewarding to the modern reader Origen's speculative theology can be. Book Condition : Good : some bumping to head and foot of cloth at spine; minor denting of corner tips; minor shelfwear to edges and minor fade around top edge; otherwise cloth in very good shape, and gilding intact and bright; top face a bit dusty with minor flecking not affecting inside pages; inside pages with only minor toning and otherwise in very good order and crisp; the bindings is good and secure. DJ Condition : G+ : occasional very minor crease at edges of jacket; a hint of fading at spine area; minor rubbing generally; otherwise jacket with its colours well preserved; not clipped. Goodman, Allegra
TOTAL IMMERSION - Scarce Signed Copy of The First Hardcover Edition
New York City, NY: Harper & Row - 1st Printing. Signed. 260 pages. Published in 1989. The author's breakthrough debut collection of short stories. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Written when she was still a student at Harvard University, the eleven stories in this collection received lavish praise from such established writers as Cynthia Ozick, Max Apple, and Chaim Potok. Among other things, Goodman seems to have pulled off two major feats: Capture the unique culture of Hawaii, where many of the stories take place, and evoke the claustrophobic atmosphere of the Jewish community there, a microcosm of Jewish communities everywhere in America. "Allegra Goodman is brilliant, knowing, alive: A marvel. All the muse-fairies were present at her birth!" (Cynthia Ozick). A "must-have" title for Allegra Goodman collectors. This copy is neatly and beautifully signed in blue pen on the title page by Allegra Goodman. It is the most scarce and most collectible title in the author's now considerable body of work. This copy is clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A scarce signed copy thus. Selected by The New Yorker Magazine as one of "Twenty Writers for the 21st Century". One of the finest living American writers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ALLEGRA GOODMAN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0060159987. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
