Random House, New York 1937 - Illustrated with eight photographs by Carl Van Vechten. New York: Random House, 1937. First edition. Billed as a sequel to The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, this darker and more complex work was long misunderstood and neglected. An account of her experiences as a result of writing a bestseller, Everybody's Autobiography is as funny and engaging as its predecessor, but it is also a searing meditation on the meaning of success and identity in America. Original cloth binding, with a gilt title strip. Some offsetting to the front endpaper. The dust jacket is a bit rubbed and edgeworn; otherwise a very good copy. Circle - International Survey of Constructive Art
Faber, London 1937 - First edition, first printing hardback. Bound in the original cloth with red lettering to front and spine. Illustrated throughout with black & white plates. The publication of Circle was a keystone in the development of the modern movement in Britain. It expressed the connections between art, design and architecture that were at the heart of debates between artists and designers and the creative alliances of the period, incorporating written contributions from such notable figures as Mondrian, Herbert Read, Ben Nicholson, Le Corbusier, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Maxwell Fry, Breuer, Neutra, Sartoris, Giedion, Gropius, Massine, Moholy-Nagy, Jan Tschichold and Lewis Mumford. The accompanying plates illustrate recent work both by some of these individuals and by other eminent contemporaries, including John Piper, Giacometti, Brancusi, Aalto and Lubetkin. Condition: A good copy. The title page is fairly heavily creased vertically to the outer edge with a very small tear to the bottom edge, and the cloth is lightly dulled, particularly to the psine. There is a little wear to the head and tale of the spine. The text pages and plates are lightly browned/ yellowed to the edges but having said all that, this remains a decent and attractive copy of this scarce book. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Die Li-Stämme der Insel Hainan. Ein Beitrag zur Volkskunde Südchinas.
Berlin, Klinkhardt & Biermann, 1937.. EA.

Aluminium foil sample books.
Kluge & Winter GmbH. Two patterned aluminium foil catalogues. The first sample book is entitled "Neuheiten Kollektion 41". Hamburg, 1937. Oblong 8vo (25 x 15.5 cm), 42 leaves showing 190 (of 200) overlapping samples of colour patterned aluminium foil. Stapled original thick wrappers printed in red and black. The second sample book is entitled "Aluminium-Folien. Weiss dreifarbig bedruckt". Also published in Hamburg, no date given (ca. 1950). Oblong 12mo (13 x 8 cm). 20 leaves of colour patterned aluminium foil sheets, complete. Stapled original thick wrappers printed in green.* A spectacular example and a most unusual survival. The 8vo volume is an especially early source on the use of aluminium foil (commercial production in the US started in 1913). The samples are by nature extremely fragile, which makes books like these exceptionally scarce. The sample books show how foil design developed. These samples do not yet have any lettering but contain abstract pattern designs. The first sample book shows many typical 30s designs; the second booklet is quite different and clearly dates from the late 1940s or early 50s. Very good condition. Staples in the 8vo volume rusted, covers somewhat worn and stained, old ink stamp partly erased to upper cover. The majority of the fragile samples with some degree of wear or loss, but never really distracting. The 12mo booklet in fine condition with all samples intact.

New York: Donald A. Wollheim,. January 1937 (volume 5, number 4). printed from typeset copy, self wrappers, stapled.. Early issues of THE PHANTAGRAPH were printed on wood pulp paper and. extant issues are generally brittle. Aside from age-darkening of the. paper stock, this is a fine copy. Early issues of the magazine are. rare, especially in nice condition. (#110518). A legendary amateur magazine of the 1930s. This issue includes an article on the fiction of William Hope Hodgson by H. C. Koenig, Wollheim's "Phantascope" column, the anonymous "A Writer Comments on the Anger-Wright Controversy," and other material. "Encouraged by the excellent material being received from Smith, Lovecraft and others, Wollheim decided to pattern the publication after the now-defunct FANTASY FAN... The quality of material used was very high, and in this respect the magazine easily equaled its ideal... Sullivan, Harry Stack (1892-1949)
Typed Letter Signed ("Harry S Sullivan"), on his printed quarto New York City stationary, dated 24 Nov 1937, to Saul Rosenfeld at Worcester State Hospital
NY 1937 NY. Two horizontal folds, else near fine. Because he published no books in his relatively short lifetime and wasn't emotionally close to many people, Sullivan's signature is in our experience extremely hard to come by. Sullivan letters are much rarer than Freud's -- we have had exactly two in 37 years, both of which we've just bought in the past year. A good letter with serious content. Rosenzweig (1907-2004), a clinical psychologist who from 1948 on was Professor of Psychology at Washington University in St. Louis, had written Sullivan asking him to serve as consulting editor for a journal Rosenzweig was trying to found. Sullivan replies: "IN Re: Journal of Experimental Psychopathology ... My immediate reaction to your letter of October 20th was interest in your project but a feeling that I could not take on any responsibility for the realization of your project. After some thought I have concluded that, if the work of Consulting Editor takes but very little time, I would be glad to give the project support to that extent. You may, therefore, count on me, at least ['s' omitted & inserted by hand] for the present, although I am rather well supplied with activities that consume time." Weight: 0.2 ounces = 5 grams. Size: 11.2 x 8.6 inches = 28 x 21.5cm. Probably the most influential native American psychiatric theorist of the 20th century, Sullivan originally made his reputation from the papers he published reporting his work with schizophrenics at the Sheppard & Enoch Pratt Hospital in Towson, Maryland between 1925 & 1929. Doctors, nurses, and authority figures were banned from the ward. Instead, specially trained ward attendants were the persons with whom the patients were in daily contact. In the 1930s Sullivan co-founded the William Alanson White Institute, still probably the leading independent analytic institute, and in 1937 the journal Psychiatry: Journal of the Biology and Pathology of Interpersonal Relations. Most of his important ideas were introduced in lectures and in papers published in the journal. Sullivan melded ideas from social science (especially from the anthropologist Edward Sapir) with psychiatry and psychoanalysis to forge a genuinely interpersonal psychiatry in which the central concepts were anxiety as the principal threat to self-esteem, and the individual's defenses against it. His concepts of proto-, para-, and syntaxis bear a remarkable, though rarely noted, resemblance to ideas later developed in France by Jacques Lacan. Sullivan also introduced the term "significant other." Very Good
