POST, EMIL LEON.
Finite Combinatory Processes-Formulation 1.
1936 Royal8vo. Without wrappers as extracted from "The Journal of Symbolic Logic", Vol. 11, Number 3, Sept. 1936. ¶ First printing, Journal issue. "The Polish-American mathematician Emil Post made notable contributions to the theory of recursive functions. In the 1930s, independly of Turing, Post came up with the concept of a logic automation similar to a Turing machine, which he described in the present paper (the paper offered). Post's paper was intended to fill a conceptual gap in Alonzo Churchs' paper on "An unsolvable problem of elementary number theory" (Americ. Journ. of Math. 58, 1936). Church's paper had answered in the negative Hilbert's question as to whether a definite method existed for proving the truth or falsity of any mathematical statement (the Entscheidungsproblem), but failed to provide the assertion that any such definite method could be expressed as a formula in Church's lambda-calculus. Post proposed that a definite method would be on written in the form of instructions to a mindless worker operating on an infinite line of "boxes" (equivalent to Turing's machine's "tape"..."(Hook & Norman, Origins of Cyberspace No. 356).

HUNTER, Dard (1883-1966)
Papermaking in Southern Siam
      - Chillicothe, OH: Mountain House Press, 1936. Quarto. (11 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches). Title in red and black, half title. Colourd woodblock frontispiece, 17 photogrvure plates, 1 mounted Khoi tree bark sample, 1 mounted specimen of Siamese mould cloth, 3 double-page paper samples (two natural-toned, one "sacred black temple paper"), 4pp. publisher's prospectus loosely inserted. Original black morocco-backed decorated paper-covered boards by Peter Franck of Gaylordsville, Ct., the black hand-made paper covering the boards printed in gold and red from old Siamese woodblocks. One of 115 copies numbered and signed by Hunter, this being copy 41 -- the rarest of the Dard Hunter monographs on primitive papermaking. "This book is an account of a sojourn with Tym, Piung, Pyn, and Luolin Niltongkum at their paper mill in Bangsom. The old Niltongkum family has been making paper by hand along the small canals of Southern Siam for more than two hundred years, and their unique establishment is probably the most interesting primitive paper manufactory in Asia. The compiler of this book was the first Occidental traveller to visit this little-known remote mill . The book not only describes in detail the making of the various kinds of Siamese paper from the bark of the khoi tree (Steblus asper), but also an account is given of the journey from Singapore to Bangkok through the rubber plantations and jungles of the Malay Peninsula, a distance of over a thousand miles . Only 115 copies of this volume have been made and of this number only 99 offered for sale. This is the smallest edition ever made of a Dard Hunter book" (Prospectus). Schlosser 37. ELIOT, T.S.
Murder in the Cathedral
ELIOT, T.S. Murder in the Cathedral. New York: Harcourt, Brace, [1936]. Slim octavo, original blackcloth, original dust jacket. $250. Second American edition of Eliot's best and most successful play, with text corrected to match the Mercury Theater production. Widely regarded as Eliot's best play—and certainly his most successful—Murder in the Cathedral is his dramatization of the 12th-century murder of Thomas à Becket. Eliot's plays "are in a blank verse of his own invention, in which the metrical effect is not apprehended apart from the sense; thus he brought 'poetic drama' back to the popular stage" (Britannica). "In this second edition," Eliot writes in his Preface, "I have substituted, for the dialogue of the three Priests at the beginning of Part II, a speech by the Chorus. The text is now in conformity with the recent production at the Mercury Theatre, London." With the Preface dated "January 1936," this second American edition was published in June 1936 from the second English edition. Gallup A29g. Stamp of ownership on pastedown. Top corners lightly bumped, minor edge-wear to original dust jacket. A near-fine copy.

ISRAEL
Photograph Collection. Israel
1936. (ISRAEL). Archive of original news photographs chronicling the establishment of the state of Israel. Associated Press, circa 1912-51. Hundreds of original photographs, most 8 by 10 inches, housed in three slipcased cloth portfolios. $29,000. Extraordinary archive of almost 400 original press photographs (most 8 by 10 inches) depicting Jewish immigration to Palestine during the early 1940s, World War II Palestine, the bloody battles of the War of Independence, and Israeli settlers following World War II. Every photograph is accompanied by its original press description, attached when originally taken. This massive, unique archive of photographs begins chronologically in the early part of the 20th century, with photographs of the founding of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, including one of General Allenby and Chaim Weizmann as they help to lay the foundation stones of the school. It continues with photographs of Jewish soldiers fighting Nazi troops in the Middle East during World War II. Numerous photographs feature Jewish settlers' efforts to "make the desert bloom," and create viable industries in Palestine. There are photographs documenting illegal immigration into Palestine by Jewish refugees from the Nazis, as well as of street scenes after the 1947 UN partition plan for Palestine was announced. The settling of recent immigrants is well documented with a large number of photographs of refugee camps. A young Moshe Dayan is featured in one photograph. There are rare contemporary photographs of both David Ben-Gurion and Chaim Weizmann voting in Israel's first elections, Weizmann being sworn in as Israel's first president, and Israel's first cabinet, including Ben-Gurion, Golda Meir, and Moshe Sharett. The Israeli War of Independence is featured through photographs of troops, street scenes, destruction, and refugees. Operation Magic Carpet, in which Yemen's Jewish population was evacuated to Israel in 1949, is documented as well. Many of the photographs were featured in appeals for donations from the United Palestine Appeal (and its later name, the United Jewish Appeal). All aspects of Israeli life are featured, from political and military to agricultural, industrial, religious, and family life, in cities and on kibbutzim. Almost all of the photographs are accompanied by their original descriptions, which had been attached after they were taken. Tipped to the versos of some photographs are accompanying newspaper clippings of the text used by newspapers. Many of the photographs are marked for publication. An extraordinary, fine, unique collection of some of the most dramatic and important times in Jewish and Israeli history.

Steinbeck, John
SAINT KATY THE VIRGIN (Signed, Limited Edition)
Covici Friede, 1936 - Signed/limited edition of 199 copies. An obviously scarce Steinbeck item. This is copy number 141 of 199 copies signed by John Steinbeck at the back of the book on the colophon page. Wear to edges and corners of the orange decorated paper and gray-brown cloth binding. Foxing mostly on the front and end paste-down endpapers and first and last free blank endpapers, with just light sporadic foxing on some of the pages of text. There are two blank free endpapers at the front and also at the back of the book. Following the front endpapers is a half title page with the title in red type. Title and author on first page of text also in red type. Title in red on spine is still quite bold. This copy has no name written inside it and no bookplate. The binding is square and tight. Steinbeck signed in black pen under the limitation statement on the last page, and above the number which is also written in black pen. This edition of only 199 copies was distributed as a 1936 Christmas season gift by Covici and Friede who were Steinbeck's publisher. Although this was just a little allegorical story featuring animals as the characters (Katy is a pig), it was well received by critics and the story became one of the short stories in "The Long Valley" when that book came out in 1938. This limited printing is dated 1936 on the colophon page. Printed on Perusia handmade paper by The Golden Eagle Press of Mount Vernon, New York. This copy has a thin clear acetate dust-jacket like covering but it is uncertain if this originally came with the book. It is somewhat shorter than the book itself, which itself is not a large book. The acetate looks old and fragile, and it has a couple of short tears. It is removable. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

STEINBECK, JOHN
Nothing So Monstrous
New York: The Pynson Printers, 1936. First Separate Edition (originally published in The Pastures of Heaven, 1932); Goldstone A2f; noting that the paper supply allowed only 370 copies to be printed. Published for subscribers to use as Christmas gifts, the colophon was customized with the subscriber's name following "made by the Pynson Printers of New York at the request of____ for presentation to [blank]." Goldstone notes 50 copies were so designated for Elmer Adler, 100 for Frederick B. Adams, Jr., 150 for Ben Abramson, 50 for Edwin J. Beinecke and 20 for antiquarian bookseller Howard Mott (although evidently fewer were issued with his name; only one is known). Unknown to Goldstone, this is one of apparently only six copies with Steinbeck's name in the colophon. In a letter to Frederick B. Adams, Jr., one of the publishers, Steinbeck requested six copies as he couldn't "...afford any more..." We have only heard of one other copy of the Steinbeck issue. Steinbeck has filled in the colophon with the name of Elsie and Martin Ray, and has inscribed upside-down on the rear free endpaper, "For Rusty and Elsie, Whose back rubbing has made me a little less monstrous than I [small cross-out] have been. John Steinbeck." In the proper place, right side up on the front free endpaper, the author has inscribed "I am a dope (see last page) John Steinbeck." Steinbeck was a guest at Martin (Rusty) and Elsie Ray's Mt. Eden Winery in Saratoga, California, where he is said to have written a portion of The Grapes of Wrath. Very light rubbing; about a fine copy..

Kalmar, Bert & Harry Ruby
The Kalmar-Ruby Songbook With Reasonably Accurate Dissertations By Franklin P. Adams, Robert Benchley, Irving Berlin, Marc Connelly, Moss Hart, Ben Hecht, Nunnally Johnson, Groucho Marx and James K. McGuinness
Random House, 1936. First Edition. Signed presentation copy from Harry Ruby to Dave Kapp, the former head of A&R at Victor Records. Inscribed by the author: “ To Dave Kapp, On page 19 you'll find the famous ‘ Captain' Spaulding, who, but for Groucho Marx, might have passed away an unsung hero. Sincerely, Harry Ruby. ” The inscription refers to the song “ Hooray for Captain Spaulding” which served as Groucho Marx's theme song and has an amusing essay by him. Additionally, laid in is a typed contract signed by Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby, dated June 4, 1937, with a notary's signature and blindstamp, indicating that Kalmar and Ruby have received an undisclosed amount of money from Samuel Goldwyn, Inc. for a work referred to as “ Goldwyn Follies” . A collection of the team's best songs in words & music, accompanied by humorous tributes from such noted personalities as Robert Benchley, Moss Hart, Irving Berlin, Nunnally Johnson, and Groucho Marx. Harry Ruby was a writer for the Ziegfeld Follies, the classic Marx Brothers movie Animal Crackers, and many comedic tunes for vaudeville. Edges are slightly rubbed, otherwise very good plus without dust jacket.

Guthrie-Smith, H.
Sorrows and Joys of a New Zealand Naturalist
      - New Zealand: Dunedin and Wellington (1936). Octavo, original cloth. 253 pages, illustrated with photographs. First Edition. Limited to 1,000 copies, signed by the author. Ink inscription on front endleaf reads: "Lucy M. Cranwell, from the author, H. Guthrie-Smith, 1936." Also, there is a small pink card laid in with the ink inscription, "With the Author's Compliments." A very good to fine copy. "In this volume these alterations (i.e., biological changes resulting from foreign importation) will be considered from the point of view of one who has lived his life in the back country and a considerable part of whose time has been spent on unpeopled coasts, islands difficult of access, and barren river-beds.Under canvas, in shepherds' huts, in grimy gold-washers' shanties, in the oily wigwams of mutton-birders, the writer has enjoyed opportunities at first hand." Herbert Guthrie-Smith emigrated to New Zealand from Scotland in 1880, and farmed a 40,000 acre tract of land in Hawke's Bay. He was a passionate amateur naturalist nature as well, and one of the earliest voices on behalf of ecology. He was also a talented photographer (as this book's illustrations will testify) who did wonders in primitive conditions with primitive equipment, and photographed several bird species now gone.
