Davies, Hugh Sykes
Petron
|
London: Dent, 1935. A near Fine unmarked copy with dustjacket which has a 2cm tear to front with no loss, a small chip to spine head and some age darkening. viii + 79 pages. Hugh Sykes Davies (1909-1984) was the author of the English Surrealist manifesto of 1936 and co-curator of the 1936 London International Surrealist Exhibition. 'Petron' is a Surrealist prose poem and regarded as the first ''novel' produced by the Surrealist Group in England. The picaresque wanderings of its eponymous hero are influenced by the poems of Ariosto but its method of construction are primarily surreal. Davies was a University Lecturer, Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge, and among his numerous friends were C.S. Lewis, T. S. Eliot, I. A. Richards, Anthony Blunt, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Conrad Aiken and Salvador Dali. Davies made the young Malcolm Lowry his ward in an attempt to stop him drinking. **** A SCARCE AND IMPORTANT WORK **** . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7!" - 9!" tall.

Marlowe, G. S.
I Am Your Brother
|
Collins, 1935. Light wear, slight spotting, neat name on front endpaper, eps and prelims a little foxed otherwise very good. 8vo. pp 286. Curious modern Gothic psychological novel, in its time both bestseller and cult. The first book of an enigmatic figure on the margins of the Fitzrovian set. Much admired by J Maclaren Ross, among others, the author was later to vanish, presumed dead (see J Maclaren Ross ëMemoirs of the Fortiesí pp 38-45. ) The British edition, the true first is an inexplicably elusive title. The printed dedicatee of the book is the author Enid Bagnold. It is said that Marlowe informed Maclaren Ross that he had written it to entertain her children while staying at her country house.

Marlowe, Gabriel.
I Am Your Brother.
|
New York:: Harcourt Brace, 1935. Black cloth with lavender diagonal stripes, spine titles in yellow. 289 pages. A rather scarce book which is surprising given its cult status in the 1930's, this was apparently one of only three books written by Marlowe, the other two even less common than this one. He is credited in some places with the script for the 1934 motion picture, "David Copperfield", although the official credit went to Hugh Walpole. Both Marlowe, who was Jewish and disappeared in Norway in 1940, and this book deserve a better audience today. The Time Magazine review suggested it was the literary equivalent of the then avant garde Surrealism of Dali. For exposing the seediest and sadest grotesques, it rivals West's "Miss Lonelyhearts", but it fascinates more than it repels. The book is soundly bound, clean and unmarked with barely a hint of edge wear; the paper is ever so slightly toned. The jacket is largely intact with minor loss of material at tips, less than a square inch missing adjacent to the bottom of the rear flap fold, a much smaller chip at top of that fold, a small triangular piece missing at top rear panel, and a tiny chip at the middle of the spine. The rear flap fold has a largely closed tear of about 3 + inches.. Near Fine in Very Good - Dustjacket

This is copy of 40 of 100 printed on Bruce Rogers 100% rag paper at The Wayside Press in Topsfield, Massachusetts. The covers are covered with a very attractive patterned paper and the endpapers are beautifully marbled. A very presentable copy of a notable and noble book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ROBERTSON, F. A. de V.; C. N. Colson &
Squadrons of the Royal Air Force and other units.
|
Publisher: London, Flight Publishing Co. Ltd., n.d [1935] Their work in war and peace. Quarto, original RAF blue cloth, title gilt to spine and to the upper board together with RAF wings. In the dustjacket. Profusely illustrated from photographs, many full-page images. Boards slightly spotted on the bottom edge, but overall very good indeed in the handsome photographic jacket. First edition. A publication of Flight magazine, drawing illustrations from their superb photographic archive overseen by John Yoxall, their chief photographer from 1919-39. This copy has the ownership inscription of George L. Pickard, one of the pioneers of oceanography, director of the University of British Columbia’s Institute of Oceanography from 1958-78. The inscription dates 1936 during his time at Hertford College, Oxford (gilt college stamp to the lower board) reading for his PhD in Physics. During the war he worked with R. V. Jones at the Clarendon Laboratory on infra-red aircraft detection, and then at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, developing the two-spotlight beam altimeter which was adapted for use in the Dam Buster raids. Combining his interest in flying and his later love of the sea, he qualified for membership of the “Goldfish Club” when in 1942 he was on a test flight that ditched in the Channel. He received an MBE for his war work. A superb copy with an intriguing provenance.

|
New York: Benjamin DeCasseres, (1935-1945). 23 vols, 8vo. Printed wrappers, edgewear w/ closed tears, some spotting/toning to wrappers, otherwise very good. ¶ First Editions, a near complete run of The DeCasseres Books, lacking only volumes two, twenty-three, and twenty-four, with the addition of two other titles. The copies of Paul Jordan Smith, originally, we presume, those of the author and his wife, Bio; Finis has Bio’s name and address in her hand to the upper wrapper. Laid in to volume one is an autograph post card with a warm note from the DeCasseres’ to Smith. ¶ Social philosopher, literary critic, journalist and artist of the iconoclastic school Benjamin DeCasseres (1893-1961) moved in a circle that included Edgar Saltus, James Huneker, and H.L. Mencken, and whose pithy observations remain quite quotable.

MORGENSTERN, OSKAR
Vollkommene Voraussicht und wirtschaftliches Gleichgewicht.
|
Sonderabdruck aus, 'Zeitschrift für Nationalökonomie', Band VI, Heft 3 1935. Seite 337 bis 357, Original-Broschur (hintere Umschlagseite fehlt), gr. 8vo. Morgenstern "became Professor at the University of Vienna in 1935, and in the same year published in the 'Zeitschrift für Nationalökonomie' (of which he was managing editor) an article on fundamental difficulties with the assumption of perfect foresight in the study of economic equilibrium. It was then, that the mathematician Edward Czech noted that the problems raised by Morgenstern were related to those treated by von Neumann in his article 'Zur Theorie der Gesellschaftsspiele' published in 1928. " (Martin Shubik in : The New Palgrave III, p. 556).

OPPENHEIM, E. Phillips.
The Battle of Basinghall Street.
|
London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited, 1935. First Edition; thick 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth with black titles to faded spine and upper, blue end papers; in its original pictorial dustwrapper by Bip Pares, rubbed to extremities, chip to back cover and corners, frayed at spine ends, torn at head of spine with the top bar of the 'T' in the 'The' of the title missing; some small tape repairs visible from the inside of the jacket. A tight copy in a still bright and striking dust jacket. E. Phillips Oppenheim, 1866 - 1946, was the earliest writer of spy fiction as understood today, and invented the "Rogue Male" school of adventure thrillers that was later exploited by John Buchan and Geoffrey Household. Much of Oppenheim's work possesses a unique escapist charm, featuring protagonists who delight in Epicurean meals, surroundings of intense luxury, and the relaxed pursuit of criminal practice, on either side of the law.
