[Wilson, Carroll A. ( compiler)]:
FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT OF SOME FOUR HUNDRED FAMILIAR QUOTATIONS.
Middletown, CT: Olin Memorial Library Wesleyan University, 1935. Folded and gathered unbound sheets. Outer leaves a bit tanned and faintly dusty, otherwise very good, in somewhat dusty folding chemise. First edition. An interesting association copy of this substantial annotated exhibition catalogue, with the pencil ownership signature of Laurance Thompson, who was then on faculty at Wesleyan and was instrumental in advising about the exhibition and is prominently thanked in the acknowledgements. Laid in is a 1 1/2 page t.l.s. from Wilson to Thompson, New York, 5 October 1934, outlining his plans for the exhibition, stating specifically it was a joint brainchild with "Eddie" (i.e. A. Edward Newton), and outlining plans for a visit to Middletown to undertake the first steps of organization. Also laid in is a 3pp. carbon, forwarded by Wilson to Thompson, 28 February 1935, to L.L. Mackail, defending some of the terminology in the catalogue, correcting some errors, and attributing others to the University's deadline and budget. On a blank prelim, A. Edward Newton has inscribed and signed this copy: "This is Carroll Wilson's show - not mine. Why the devil should I be asked to sign his damned book? ...." There are a number of small pencil check marks in the text. The published edition consisted of six hundred copies.

Berlin, Zeitgeschichte Verlag Wilhelm Andermann, 1935-1938. - Leinen mit Goldprägung, gr.8°. Hitler wie ihn keiner kennt. 100 Bilddokumente aus dem Leben des Führers. Geleitwort von Baldur von Schirach, 311. bis 336. Tausend, 1935. Jugend um Hitler. 120 Bilddokumente aus der Umgebung des Führers. Geleitwort von Baldur von Schirach, 141. bis 165. Tausend, 1935. Hitler abseits vom Alltag. 100 Bilddokumente aus der Umgebung des Führers. Geleitwort von Wilhelm Brückner, 81. bis 105. Tausend, 1937. Heinrich Hoffmann (* 12. September 1885 in Fürth; 16. POPPER, KARL.
Logik der Forschung. Zur Erkenntnistheorie der modernen Naturwissenschaft.
- Wien, Julius Springer, 1935 (recte: 1934). 8vo. Uncut in the original printed wrappers. A minor tear to upper capital. A very clean copy. VI, 248, (2, -advertisement leaf) pp. Extremely scarce first edition of Popper's debut, his epistemological main work, which is accepted as "one of the most important documents of the twentieth century."The work was printed for the first time, as it is here, in volume 9 of "Schriften zur Wissenschaftlichen Weltauffassung", published by Philipp Frank and Moritz Schlick in 1935 (impressum) (recte 1934); later it appeared in several altered editions (Popper changed it as late as 1994, a few months before his death), and in 1959 he issued a much enlarged version of the work in English under the title "The Logic of Scientific Discovery". This seminal main work, Popper's earliest work, sets out to characterize empirical science with the aid of the demarcation-criteria of falsification, and in it Popper defends the use of falsification as a methodology. The notion that no number of experiments will ever be able to prove a theory, but that, on the contrary, one single experiment will be able to refute one, has changed 20th century philosophy decisively. "Falsificatonism" replaces psychologism, naturalism, inductionism, and logical positivism in one stroke, and only hypotheses that are able to clash with observation reports are regarded as scientific.Other thinkers had written about the importance of refutations before Popper issued this work, but it is important to stress the fact that he is the very first to argue that they are sufficient.Karl Popper (1902 - 1994) has been called "the most important philosopher of science since Francis Bacon", and he is credited with having solved the puzzle of scientific method. By being the first to explicitly state that science advances by deductive falsification, he comes to state that, as opposed to theories of Aristotle and later scientific philosophers, it is not induction that comes to generate real scientific theories, but imagination and creativity. By experimenting we will be able to conclude nothing positive and for sure, we will only be able to test theories and thereby possibly falsify them. This theory also applies to the discoveries of Einstein, he says, who was able to conclude all of his theories with a piece of chalk. According to Popper himself, Einstein was the main influence on his philosophy, though they did not actually meet each other until 1950. After having studied the attacks on Einstein's relativity theory of gravitation and heard Einstein's statement that he would regard his theory as untenable should it fail certain tests, Popper came to develop his falsificationist philosophy of science, which is the central theory of his philosophy of science. Einstein's statement had sparked something in Popper, and made him aware of an attitude that was totally different from that of the Marxians, Freudians, and Adlerians. According to Popper's interpretation of Einstein's statement, Einstein was not looking for experiments that would establish his theory, - they wouldn't be able to do that - the only crucial experiments would be the ones where disagreement with his predictions would prove them wrong. Thus, in this seminal work Popper heavily criticizes the logical empiricists and their method based on the collection of facts formulated in logical protocol sentences. He opposed himself to the Neopositivists of the Vienna Circle and especially to the doctrine of the early Wittgenstein. With the spreading of the idea of falsification to the idea of criticism, Popper, with his "Logik der Forschung", is responsible for the Critical Rationalism that sprung from Neoempiricism. London, Flight Publishing Co. Ltd., n.d [1935] - Their work in war and peace. First edition. A publication of Flight magazine, drawing illustrations from their superb photographic archive overseen by John Yoxall, their chief photographer from 1919-39. This copy has the ownership inscription of George L. Pickard, one of the pioneers of oceanography, director of the University of British Columbias Institute of Oceanography from 1958-78. The inscription dates 1936 during his time at Hertford College, Oxford (gilt college stamp to the lower board) reading for his PhD in Physics. During the war he worked with R. V. Jones at the Clarendon Laboratory on infra-red aircraft detection, and then at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, developing the two-spotlight beam altimeter which was adapted for use in the Dam Buster raids. Combining his interest in flying and his later love of the sea, he qualified for membership of the "Goldfish Club" when in 1942 he was on a test flight that ditched in the Channel. He received an MBE for his war work. A superb copy with an intriguing provenance. Quarto, original RAF blue cloth, title gilt to spine and to the upper board together with RAF wings. The Song of Songs Which is Solomon's
New York: The Heritage Press. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1935. Limited Signed Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. Color Illustrations; Full pressed leather. This is the second book issued by the Heritage Press (First Series - following the dual Nonesuch Press / Heritage Press titles) This copy is one of 1500 of the collector's editions (only volumes 1-6 so issued) which included, in this case, a full page lithograph signed by the illustrator Valenti Angelo. (According to Bussacco these limited editions used the handpainted artwork as frontispieces, but this particular lithograph is at the end of the text. ) According to Bussacco: "These novels were for sale ascollectors items and offered to subscribers of the Limited Editions Club first, and then sold to the general public." Red "pressed " leather covered boards have embossed illustrations and rules (by Valenti Angelo as well). The spine on this copy has been expertly restored and shows virtually no wear (If you look very closely, you can see a hint of where the color red has been matched, but the repair itself is nearly seamless). The text pages are french fold and illustrated on every page around, and including the text. The endpapers are fully illustrated. All initials are illuminated with pure gold by hand. The lithograph is at the rear of the text and includes a (very tiny) penciled signature by Valenti Angelo. This edition includes a red paper covered slipcase. Again, this particular slipcase has been expertly repaired and appears, upon all but the most intense scrutiny, to be in near fine condition. "Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine. Because of the savor of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee. Draw me, we will run after thee" .

DAVEY, Martin L. (1884-1946).
Typed Manuscript Signed.
- Two-term Ohio governor (1935-39). TMS, 4pp (onion skion sheets), 8½" X 13 3/4", n.p., 1935 March 9. Very good. Small paper clip rust mark at upper left of first page. Original single-spaced typescript of the Ohio governor's irate speech, titled "Radio Speech of Martin L. Davey, Governor, March 9th, 1935," on the Federal Emergency Relief Administration programs within Ohio and his inability to exert any control over it. In part: "Many of you will recall that I made an issue of this relief situation in the campaign last year. I made a solemn promise to the people of Ohio to correct the abuses and to eliminate the waste and inefficiency. / .neither myself as Governor, nor any agent of the State of Ohio, has the slightest possibility of correcting any of the evils and waste and inefficiency that give rise to such wide-spread complaints. I am wholly unable to keep an earnest campaign promise to clean up this situation. / It is not my purpose to evade responsibility. I was perfectly willing to take all the blame that goes with executive power, but when there is not the slightest power lodged in the Governor to correct the abuse and waste, I am not willing to assume public responsibility for what is going on." A lengthy denunciation of the way in which New Deal programs were being carried out on the state level. Interestingly, Davey's pre-gubernatorial business, the Davey Tree Expert Company, was one of the earliest to sponsor network radio programs -- thus Davey was well versed in the power of radio waves to influence constituents. Within weeks of taking office, Davey -- whose tenure has been described as "one of the most extraordinary and bizarre periods in the annals of the Ohio governorship" -- began feuding with President Roosevelt. He accused the federal administration of relief in Ohio with being "cruel, inhuman and wasteful" -- to which FDR accused Davey with corrupting relief efforts in Ohio. Roosevelt quoted federal relief administrator Harry L. Hopkins, who maintained that Davey's campaign committee had solicited contributions to finance his inaugural ball from persons working with the Federal Relief Administration. Davey sought to have Hopkins arrested for criminal libel. Before the Ohio legislature, Davey called Hopkins a coward and a liar and dared him to enter Ohio. This typescript clearly precedes this name-calling brouhaha, for in it Davey discusses Hopkins and his agency in civil if not cordial terms. Chronologically, this speech likely falls some time shortly after the beginning of the Davey-FDR feud and the FDR countercharges. Boldly signed by Davey at the conclusion. Fascinating and most unusual -- an important relic from this memorable Ohio political squabble. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[Tokyo 1935], Hokuseido. FIRST & ONLY EDITION. Blue cloth, 96p., very good, edited with preface by Albert Mordell. BAL 8033. Q U I T E R A R E These excellent translations are of Zola's works, including essays and translations of Emile Zola: A Note. The Fight at the Mill. A Peasant's Death. A Rich Man's Death. Superb! Hearn had sympathy and admiration for Zola, and made quite a number of translations from journalistic work and fiction by the French writer. He also wrote book reviews of Zola's novels often and even did a biographical sketch of the man. The present volume contains the biographical sketch & the famous fascinating story "Fighting at the Mill," probably the most important translation from Zola that Hearn did. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: * BAL 8033 * Not in: P.D & Ione Perkins: LAFCADIO HEARN A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HIS WRITINGS. * Color scans can be sent by email. Marks, Edward B., as told to Abbott J. Liebling
They All Sang: From Tony Pastor to Rudy Vallée
New York: The Viking Press , 1935. Hardcover Near Fine in Good dj [solid copy, very light shelfwear, a touch of foxing to fore-edge; jacket moderately edgeworn, marred by a rather serious triangular pull-tear in the middle of the front panel (no paper loss but considerable associated creasing/scrunching), and another much smaller triangular pull-tear where the paper has been lost (resulting in a small hole in the jacket, but fortunately in an uncritical spot); original price on jacket scratched out with new price inked over; see additional note about jacket pull-tear]. "A musical record of America through half a century, told in the lively memoirs of an old timer who knew them all -- the people who wrote our songs, the singers and performers, the places where they were heard from Bowery to Broadway, the minstrels, burlesque queens, vaudeville stars, musical showfolk, movie and radio singers -- the all the songs they sang. Illustrated with over 200 photographs, playbills, song covers, words and music of famous songs." [Additional note about large pull-tear in front jacket panel: although the paper has been moved back into place, there has been no tape-repair, which means it would be possible for a paper conservationist/restorer to do quite a decent job of fixing it up, should you care to take the trouble. Considering the rarity of the jacket, it might just be worth it.] Near Fine in Good dj
