SERAFIMOVICH, A
THE IRON FLOOD
1935. SERAFIMOVICH, A. THE IRON FLOOD. Translated From The Russian. Moscow- Leningrad: Co-operative Publishing Society of Foreign Workers in the U.S.S.R., 1935. 12mo., tan cloth stamped in black. First Edition. Signed presentation from Serafimovich on the front endpaper, mentioning "Revolutionary Struggle." Aleksandr Serafimovich's most famous novel, originally published in Russian in 1924, deals with the breakout of the Red Army from the White encirclement. The depiction of a Communist hero won praise from Soviet critics; but when the prototype of the hero was arrested and shot in connection with the Tukhachevsky affair, sales of the book were temporarily suspended. The novel soon returned to favor and Serafimovich won the Stalin Prize in 1943 for his services to Soviet Literature. Signed copies of this title are scarce. Good (spine cocked, some browning and numerous small abrasions to covers).

We piled all our stuff in duffel bags and full-field packs and lined them up in platoon formation in the usual falling-out area. Around 1000 hrs. we picked up our packs, rifles, steel helmets and took off for the train. An unforgettable sight during that long march was the long train of cars carrying the wives of some of the men. They edged along with the men and the tears flowed as they got that one last look at their soldier-husbands. They waved and threw kisses until we finally started moving to the tune of "Don't Fence Me In" played by the Fort Lewis military band. We completed the 50 mile trip to Fort Lawton, Washington, our Port of Embarkation. This was IT. Remaining 8 pages speak of his time aboard ship, Seattle to Honolulu. 2) Gene's Personal IE SHIMA DAIRY - Manually typed 27 pages ( each page is typed front and back). Beginning January 24th ending Sept. 2. This diary is rich in very detailed historical encounters with the enemy! TRAVEN, B
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
1935. FIRST EDITION. TRAVEN, B. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1935. Octavo, original black cloth, uncut, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6000. Scarce first American edition of Traven's best and most popular novel!"one of the most gripping and uncompromising books ever written"!considered far superior to any preceding edition. Once described as an author who wrote for "people left at the outer edges of the glittering but anguished American dream," the true identity of B. Traven remains one of the 20th century's greatest literary mysteries (Charles Miller, Proletarian Writers of the Thirties). The writer's popular novels and stories have been translated into more than 30 languages, but Traven's true name and nationality remain unknown. He seems to have lived most of his life in Mexico and many of his manuscripts, typed in German, came from there, yet Traven once told his German publishers that his early novels were originally written in English. This novel!"one of the most gripping and uncompromising books ever written! [and] among the great works of modern literature" (Smiley, 249)!was first published in Germany in 1927 as Der Schatze der Sierra Madre. The first English translation saw print in London in 1934, translated by Basil Creighton. This first American edition "is not a translation: Traven wrote it in English, and it shows. The language is richer than in the stilted British edition, and the text runs much longer. Only in the American version will the English-language reader get the story's full impact" (Smiley, 249). John Huston's 1948 film adaptation won three Oscars and critical acclaim for star Humphrey Bogart. Johnson, 324. Sanders, 34. Book with mild foxing; very bright and clean dust jacket expertly restored. A handsome copy.

Modest paper remnant on the front fly from a private rental library, glue remnants where the jacket flaps were removed from the pastedowns, else an about fine copy in a bright and fresh dustwrapper that appears fine, but which has been rebacked with brown paper at an earlier date. Mollie finds real love after several false starts. Godwin's racy novels have become extremely scarce, especially in jacket -- OCLC references no copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

KARLOFF, BORIS (1887-1969) British actor who emigrated to Canada in the 1910s. He is best remembered for his roles in horror films and his portrayal of Frankenstein's monster in the 1931 film Frankenstein. He also made an impression as Mord the Executioner in Tower of London.
Original Photograph Signed, being a publicity portrait as Mord in Tower of London., 4to, n.p., n.d. (circa 1939).
      - This is an incredibly haunting image, bust length wearing a black high neck jacket and wide chain around his neck. A wonderfully bizarre image. Signed, Boris Karloff.Ó. While the long, creative partnership between Karloff and Lugosi never led to a close mutual friendship, it produced some of each actor's most revered and enduring productions, beginning with The Black Cat. Follow-ups included The Raven (1935), The Invisible Ray (1936), Black Friday (1940), You'll Find Out (also 1940), and The Body Snatcher (1945). During this period he also starred with Basil Rathbone in Tower of London (1939). Gregynog Press.) BRIDGES (Robert)
Eros and Psyche, a Poem in XII Measures.
Newtown, Powys. , 1935 - ONE OF 285 NUMBERED COPIES (of an edition of 300 copies) this marked ‘Out of Series’, printed in black and red on Batchelor handmade paper, 24 wood-engravings by Loyd Haberly and John Beedham from original designs by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, the large initial letters designed by Graily Hewitt and printed in green, pp. [iv] (blanks), [viii], 143, [5] (blanks), lge. 4to., orig. white pigskin, backstrip gilt lettered and the four flat raised bands outlined in gilt, the gilt circle at the centre of the front cover enclosing a complex butterfly and floral design, some very minor offsetting to the covers from the fleece-lined box and slipcase as is usual, t.e.g., others untrimmed, matching white buckram fleece-lined box with cotton pull and the slipcase with printed label, near fine The engravings were selected by Loyd Haberly from a group of about seventy drawings executed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones and originally intended to illuminate Morris's poem ‘Cupid and Psyche’. Haberly redrew them and engraved five, John Beedham engraved the others. The book contains the first use of the Gregynog typeface, which met with mixed reactions; Newdigate praised the type and thought it magnificent, but his view appeared to be in a minority, and Hornby suggested it be used no more. Haberly was allowed to keep some of the type when he left Gregynog, and used it to better effect (some think) in his book ‘The Crowning Year’. (Harrop 33) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SASSOON
Siegfried L., 1886-1967, Poet) Unsigned but complete Autograph Letter to "My Dear Edward"
      - starting "Coming upstairs after reading a couple of chapters of Martin Chuzzlewit, I feel dissatisfied with being just a poet. O to sit down at one’s table & get going with Part XLVII of that enormous novel - for that enormous Public - instead of staring at a sonnet about something irridescent & insubstantial! Thus might a secondary schoolmaster (assistant) envy the driver of the Scotch express - did Dickens describe St Pancras at midnight on Xmas Eve? - with a page and a half of moralisations about the express engine of life rushing through the darkness and snowflakes - (human souls every one of them) . ‘If he didn’t he ought to have done’ (Arnold Bennett). I see Dickens fit plainly as the driver . (in a posthumous Punch cartoon by Tenniel . ‘Driving his characters to the Terminus’ ." then he gives a pastiche of how Dickens would have described driving the train "now there is a stupendous hissing of steam and a tremendous trawling of trolly-loads of turkeys along the rumbling platform. Now Jasper Cram [?] leans with one intense last look to whisper in Lilian’s acquiescent ear those few and fondest syllables which it would be sacrilege to commit to print, even for thee - O gentlest of readers’ . Oh to be Dickens - or apparently, to be even Priestley! ." 2 sides 8vo., Heytesbury House, Wiltshire headed paper, 27th April 1935 Having started his writing career as a poet, in 1928 Sassoon turned to prose & published Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, anonymously, though his name appeared in the second impression. His fictionalized autobiography of his early years in Kent, was an immediate success. He continued the story in Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (1930) and Sherston's Progress (1936). From the estate of  Juliette HUXLEY , wife of Julian.
