THOMAS, Homer G. (pseud.).
THE PRODIGAL VIRGIN. Illustrated by Jacques Merd [Wm. Bernhardt].
Dijon [New York or Chicago]: n.p. [Percy Shostac], 1935. 4to, 176pp, illus. t-p, 7 plates, head- tailpieces. Original illus. wrappers, glassine dust jacket, black slipcase as issued, fine in very good wrappers and dj, good slipcase. ¶ First Edition, limited to 700 copies, with cover illustration, head and tail pieces by Emile Ganzo (1895-1941, German expatriate painter who was part of the Woodstock [N.Y.] School of art) and all of Merd/ Bernhardt’s plates present; an excellent production by Shostac, who, in contrast to most American publishers of clandestine erotica during the era, took great care with the quality of his printing and paper stock. According to Frank Hoffman, Ph.D., author of An Analytical Survey of Anglo-American Traditional Erotica, the present volume is one of at least twenty-three - perhaps thirty-four - erotic novels, including the excellent The Abduction of Edith Martin, written by a pseudonymous Chicagoan, “an author of greater than average ability and industry…one of the most prolific writers of fiction of the period of the 1920s-1930s” (Hoffman, Introduction, The Prodigal Virgin, 1968 ed.), this fictional view of the younger married set vacationing in a fashionable colony on the Dunes of Lake Michigan concerns the seduction into sexual excess of an ingénue by her sister and brother-in-law. Amongst the finer clandestine American erotic novels published between the world wars, an intimate view of American sexual mores of a bygone era, and scarcer than its limitation would suggest.

Moisil, Gr. C. [Grigore C. Moisil, 1906 - 1973] [from the library of Alonzo Church]
Recherches sur l!algebre de la logique (in) Annales scientifiques de l'universite de Jassy, Tome XXII; Fasc. 1-4, 1935
[Iasi, Romania?]: [University of Iasi?], 1935 16.5 cm x 24 cm. A solid copy -- square and reasonably tight. This book does NOT have a separate outer cover. The text (pages 1-128) however is complete. There is a small piece of tape on the spine. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are clean. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Algebraic Logic. Text in French. Subtitle: Hommage a M. V. Volterra pour son 75e anniversaire. Bibliographical references. This is quite possibly the very copy used by Garrett Birkhoff for his review published in Alonzo Church's JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC, Volume 1, Issue 2 (1936), 63. This is one of several dozen books and periodicals from Alonzo Church's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction here in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his signature, or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately, this copy does not have those signs of his ownership. [But please check our inventory for several others that do]. Alonzo Church (1903 - 1995) was professor of mathematics at Princeton University (1929-1967) and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA (1967-1990). He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem, Church's Thesis, the Church-Turing Thesis, and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic, recursion theory, theoretical computer science, and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. Church was first to demonstrate that David Hilbert's Entscheidungsproblem was unsolvable. It was Church who coined the phrase "Turing machine" for Alan Turing's hypothetical universal computing machine. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, British Academy, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Church is regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century. [For more on Church's contributions, see items 250, 251, 321, 394, and 533 in Hook and Norman's ORIGINS OF CYBERSPACE, A LIBRARY ON THE HISTORY OF COMPUTING...] First Edition (premiere edition) . Vogel, Lucien
Autograph Note Signed to Alfred Eisenstaedt in French. 24, November, 1935. [With two further inscriptions]
[Paris, november ] 1935 - From the influential French publisher and photographer Lucien Vogel, "En toute jalousie un confrre admiratif Lucien Vogel. 24 Novembre 1935 La Faisanderie [Acheis?]" Vogel (1886-1954) is renowned as founder of the Gazette du Bon Ton (in 1912) and the pioneering large-format weekly photojournal Vu (in 1928), as well as countless art and illustrated books. It was Vogel who discovered Robert Capa (Andr Friedmann) and sent him on assignment to Spain, where Capa earned his reputation as a war photographer. And it was, of course, the American counterpart to Vu, LIFE magazine, where Eisenstaedt was to make his name not long after this meeting. An important association in the history of photojournalism. With the signature of "Robert Pisuet(?), Paris, 26 novembre 1935," and, on verso, an inscription, "Toute mon admiration pour les si belles photos Agns 1935 Paris novembre" 5 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. D'Annunzio, G,. ; pseud. Cocles, A.
Cento e cento e cento e cento pagine del Libro segreto di Gabriele D'Annunzio tentato di morire. [ Firmato dall'autore / Signed by the author ]
Arnoldo Mondadori, Verona, 1935. - Printed wrappers within glassine wrappers, original cream box with leather spine-label, 8vo, 25 cm, A-I, [4], CXV, [1], 446, [1] pp. From the Encyclopedia of Italian literary studies, Volume 1 by Gaetana Marrone and others: "[D'Annunzio's] last work of note, published three years before his death, is 'Cento e cento e cento e cento pagine dei libro segreto di Gabriele D'Annunzio tentato di morire', better known as the Libro segreto (A Hundred and a Hundred and a Hundred and a Hundred Pages from the Secret Book of Gabriele D'Annunzio Tempted to Die. 1935) which continues in the memorialistic vein of the two previous collections. Fragments of recollections, dreams and reflections in prose and poetry on different autobiographical topics alternate with pieces of deep introspection in which the aged poet ponders on the meaning of life and the elusive quality of all that matters most, which makes it impossible even for the greatest artist to fully express it and transpose it ino art form. One of the last thoughts with which this most skillful and brilliant master of artistic expression leaves his readers regards the painful awareness of the limits of language. In the author's own words: "Le più arcane comunicanze dell'anima con le cose.sono le parole del silenzio" (The soul's most secret communication with things.are the words of silence! With a full-page inscription signed by the author, Gabriele D'Annunzio, on the half-title. An excellent, unopened copy, virtually as new in a slightly yellowed box.

SALAR THE SALMON
London: Faber and Faber Limited,. [1935]. original brown cloth, spine stamped in gold, top edge stained red, bottom edge untrimmed, map endpapers.. Some very faint ghosting to cloth (perhaps from the jacket) else near. fine in near fine dust jacket (wraparound water color illustration by. C. F. Tunnicliffe) with light wear along top edges and clipped price.. An attractive copy. (#119501). First edition, first issue with top edge stained red. The story of a five- year-old salmon called Salar ("the leaper") and his friends, a sea-trout and a maiden fish, which begins when they come into the estuary from the Atlantic feeding banks in the early spring, and ends between winter and spring of the following year. Williamson was one of the premier writers of animal fiction in the early-to-mid 1900s, an heir to the school of writing pioneered by C. G. D. Roberts in the 1890s, who brought psychological realism to the description of animals, the result being something very far from the sentimental anthropomorphism usually associated with such subjects. Williamson wrote several other similar works, including TARKA THE OTTER (1927).

JOHN LILLIBUD
[New York: Claude Kendall & Willougby Sharp, Inc.,. 1935]. original two-part green and red cloth, spine panel stamped in black, top edge stained black.. Cloth rubbed at lower spine end, a near fine copy in very good. pictorial dust jacket with considerable internal strengthening with. brown paper tape. Externally the jacket is attractive. (#110235). First U.S. edition. "John Lillibud, a struggling writer in London, becomes a successful inventor and marketer of novelties. One day a substance is brought to him that provides a kind of instant plastic surgery -- a putty that molds itself to look like the flesh it is applied to. If left on too long it becomes permanent. This leads Lillibud to have an artificial nose created, to put on over his own, which he has always considered too small and crooked. The mere wearing of the nose leads to the creation of a new personality: Richard Whittington, a strong self-confident author from Bloomsbury. He proceeds to recruit a French female personal secretary named Anna and installs her in the flat (keeping all this from Lillibud's wife, Clarissa). Lillibud, which has become the successful brand name of his inventions, goes back and forth between these two personalities, which gradually become further and further divorced from each other. Whittington writes The Man With the Crooked Nose, a roman a clef novel satirizing Lillibud, which leads to the threat of a lawsuit -- against himself. One evening, a man named Strapkin (originally Strapotkin) comes to the Bloomsbury flat and tells Whittington that he is the Master Mind of a group of deaf-mutes living nearby who have organized themselves into a secret society called The Voice, which is telepathically broadcasting Marxist-Leninist propaganda. Their current project is to bring down the capitalist enterprise of Lillibud's Novelties, Ltd. But Strapkin confesses that he himself is leading a hypocritical double life, having come to rely on the Lillibud cerebral vibrator. Further convolutions and duplicities ensue.#11; An intriguing novel, mingling psychological, occult and science fictional thrills with black comedy, very much of a piece with other offerings from this publisher in the 1930s, such as The Torture Garden by Octave Mirbeau and Twisted Clay by Frank Walford. The modest starting point and straightforward style of the writing make a good foil for its increasingly fantastic story. The principal motif is that of the double, harkening back inevitably to Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde; but the image of the nose recalls Gogol's surrealistic novella about a detachable nose; and the protagonist's name, in conjunction with his status as a budding author, calls up the iconic image of Oscar Wilde holding a lily; Richard Whittington, a popular 15th century lord mayor of London, gave rise to Dick Whittington, a figure of English legend and pantomime. Stevenson's tale has the apparent simplicity of a fable or allegory, whereas Hurrell's has the arabesques of a faintly surreal extravaganza, spinning off doubles within doubles and duplicities within duplicities. An unusual book that should be better known. The dust jacket has a striking pictorial design." - Robert Eldridge. Bleiler (1948), p. 156. Reginald 07644. Not in Bleiler (1978).

Nice Going, Red: the Story of a Boy Who "Couldn't Take It" [By the Author of "Brass Knuckles" and "Midget"]
New York: Benziger Brothers, 1935. TRUE FIRST EDITION with "1935" on the title page! Bound in green cloth, 7 1/2" x 5 1/8", 281 pages. Frontispiece illustration. CONDITION: The book is in Good condition in a Near Very Good dust jacket (Fine is our highest grade, then Very Good, then Good). The spine of the book is starting to roll (see top edge photo), but the book is tight with solid hinges. The book also has soiling to the edges (mostly to the top edge and fore-edge--see photos) and to some of the pages. Most of the soiling on the pages is due to fine black particles (soot? ) which are, for the most part, erasable (as I did to the ones on the title page). That said, the binding cloth is bright due to the presence of a dust jacket. The dust jacket has some soiling and some wear to the bottom edge including three small closed tears (and accompanying creases) along the bottom edge of the back panel (7/8", 1/4" and 1/4"), but all text and illustrations on the jacket are present and legible. See photographs--nine photographs of this book are available upon request. Catholic juvenile novel.
