It is published by Zakgiz (Zakavkazskoe gosudarstvennoe izdatelstvo), the Trans-Caucasian State Publishing House.Vazha-Pshavela (18611915) is regarded as perhaps the greatest of Georgian poets, his work deeply rooted in the Caucasus (his pseudonym means a lad from Pshavia, the highlands of north-eastern Georgia). Donald Rayfield writes: Vazha-Pshavela is qualitatively of a greater magnitude than any other Georgian writer, and the roots of his creation lie elsewhere, partly in a hitherto unknown aboriginal Caucasian folk culture, partly in pre-Christian, Hellenic beliefs, and partly in an intuition of other nations cultures all as inexplicable in nineteenth-century Pshavia as Shakespeares learning and philosophy were in sixteenth-century Warwickshire By 1950 four major Russian poets had translated Vazha; his influence began to spread. Pasternaks reading of The Snake-Eater affects his own Faustian Dr Zhivago (The Literature of Georgia, Clarendon Press, 1994, pp. 2078, 216).Tarasenkov p. 295. Searches in COPAC, KVK, and OCLC result in only 2 copies, at Amherst College and the Brotherton Library, Leeds. Not in the British Library.

Prima edizione. Formato in centrimetri 19,4x13 211 (5)pagine [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Illustrated with folding charts and numerous plates, one of which is in 3-D, to be viewed with lenses contained in a pocket on the rear pastedown. Original blue cloth, a fine copy. FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE DUKE OF WINDSOR. Neate 260 . A book of exceptional interest, being the account by Air Commodore Fellowes of the first airplane flights over Mount Everest, on April 3 and April 19, 1933. The flight project--an extensive one--was underwritten by Dame Lucy Houston, and the book is dedicated to her. SHE INSCRIBED THIS COPY FOR THE PRINCE OF WALES: Oo!Our Prince of Wales / Whatever ails / Through storms & gales / Loves us with a love that / Never fails! / Christmas 1934 / Lucy HoustonOo!. The flights were made in a Westland P.V.3, an experimental biplane with the ability to fold its wings for ship's stowage; the various cameras were state of the art, and the results, displayed in this book, are exceptional

SERJEANT T. WELLS, 1st BATTALION OXFORDSHIRE & BUCKINGHAMSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY
1934 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT INSTRUCTION MANUAL IN THE ART OF FENCING USING THE FOIL, SABRE AND EPEE
|
Borden, Hants, Hampshire, England, 1934. On offer is a handwritten notebook-style instruction manual, as titled on the cover "Fencing Lessons Foil - Sabre - Epee". The inside front cover has a pastedown fully identifying the writer: "Serjeant T. Wells of the 1st BATTALION OXFORDSHIRE & BUCKINGHAMSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. 19th Sept. to 13th Dec. 1934. Instructors Gartzen and Harkinson". An Index of the 67 page book shows that besides the lessons in the three sword types there are chapters on the Army Fencing Union, Pitches and Arenas and Bayonet Team Competitions. We are led to believe that this book is also a manual for the Instructor trainee as most pages have three columns headed: Pupil, Master, Remarks. The remarks appear to be helpful hints for the Instructor in dealing with the pupil. There are a number of hand drawn illustrations, including charts, tables, graphs and such plus there are quite a few little. 1.5" x 1", photographs which were cut from elsewhere and glued in as part of the lesson. In addition to the identification on the cover and inside front cover the back cover has Sjt. Wells handwritten address being we believe, Bordon, Hants [Hampshire]. Boards are cracked in the hinges and the netting shows but otherwise in very good shape. Provenance: From the library of a famed Hungarian fencing master, instructor, Olympian and coach. Superb fencing collectible.. Original Wraps. Good. 4to - over 9!" - 12" tall. Manuscript.

PICTORIAL REVIEW FROM SINO-JAP
PICTORIAL REVIEW FROM SINO-JAPANESE CONFLICT IN SHANGHAI.
|
A SPECTACULAR PHOTOGRAPHIC LOOK AT THE JAPANESE IN SHANGHAI [Shanghai 1934], Wen Hwa Fine Arts Press. Blue cloth, tall folio, 27 x 37.5 cm., profusely b.w. photo illustrated, most text in Chinese, some English captions, complete in one vol. many color folding maps, about 150 pages in all, 60% photos. This is a major Chinese reference & perspective of just what the Japanese army was doing in China. A graphic & true look at what the world barely knew and seldom saw. Beginning with large b.w. photographs of Sun Yat-sen [president], Lin Sen [chairman of the National Government],Wang Ching-wei [Presi- dent of Executive Yuan], General Chiang Kai-shek [Chairman of the Military Council], General Ho Ying-chin [Minister of War] & General Chen Ming-chu [former Commander-in-Chief of the 19th Route Army]. Color photos of General Chiang Kwang- nai [Commander-in-Chief of the 19th Route Army] & other mil- itary commanders & officers of the various divisions & brig- ades &c. Color & b.w. photos of Shanghai city coming under Japanese attack on Chapei, and other districts, views and photos of the Japanese war ships, landing of Japanese naval forces, enemy bombing planes over Shanghai, shelling of uni- versities, hospitals, iron works, factories, houses, air- ports, villages, color photos of the damage and great fires. Japanese marines searching & seizing Chinese civilians, some are executed on the spot, Chinese being shot with Japanese "dum-dum" bullets, the bayoneting of Chinese civilians, with many photos of the wounds. Shanghai Volunteers on Cunningham Road. Hospital work with the wounded, photos of the Japanese military leaders, war tropies taken from the Japanese milit- ary, photos of the mamed & wounded Chinese, photos and names of Chinese solders. Large section Chinese text, color maps &c. About 75% of the work is the color & b.w. photo section. A very frank & shocking view of the true story of the Japan- ese rape, murder & plunder of Shanghai. This is a most obsc- ure work, in large format. Books on the Chinese perspective of the war are quite unique. * Tall format, 26.5 x 38 cm., very good copy, some wear to the spine and corners, but a very clean, solid copy. The color photo paste-one has some chipping, else alright, blind- stamped covers, nicely done, * OBSCURE ITEM.Images displayed may not be the actual copy in stock for sale at any given time; if you want to see the exact image of the book or edition in stock, please request this by email and an image will be returned to you by attachment. !! A." {{The Original}} Published in 1934 by Obelisk Press with originals currently selling in excess of $30,000. {{Synopsis}} Miller's mixture of memoir and fiction chronicles the adventures of a young expatriate writer and his friends in Paris in the 1930s. {{Receiption}} Now hailed as an American classic, the author's masterpiece was banned as obscene in the United States for 27 years, routinely seized by US customs for sexually explicit content and vulgarity. {The Facsimile} The First Edition Library is noted for it's precise replication of expensive 'Original First Editions'. Every published work is identical to the original edition even down to the minor printing errors. Meticulously reproduced, their facsimiles have the same weight, size, typeface, art, dustjacket, finish and texture as the originals. Sydney, Sunnybrook Press, 1934 - Royal quarto, [vi], 121 pages with 49 mounted plates (48 hand-printed collotypes and an original three-colour print - a linocut? - captioned and signed in pencil by Rayner Hoff). Two-colour pictorial cloth lightly mottled and very slightly bumped on the bottom corners; endpapers offset and with the merest hint of foxing; an excellent copy with the dustwrapper (repeating the cover illustration) very slightly marked and chipped. Number 43 of only 100 copies published (and the list of subscribers at the rear accounts for 98 of them). All copies were signed by the four contributors, the sculptor and the printer, Ernest Shea. 'A reviewer had written, in 1934, "Shea lives for printing of the sort that aims at perfect harmony of type, paper, layout, and illustration"' (Australian Dictionary of Biography, Volume 11). Given the date, the reviewer was probably referring to this magnificent publication. Use [Ask Bookseller a Question] option below to confirm availability.

The Big Snake of Harwich Swamps: original two-page spread illustration forthis story in The Sportsman. Graphite and white ink on paper, signed anddated
|
Boston: The Sportsman Magazine, 1934 This work, by an artist who did covers and some other work forthe magazine, consists of two full-page drawings with mortised rectangles for the text. It was used to illustrate Gordon Basssett's angling tall tale, “The Big Snake of Harwich Swamps”, pp. 50-51 of the April 1934 issue of The Sportsman. In the magazine, the drawing was poorly reproduced and appears faint and washed out, with much loss of detail--the original is clear, bold, and handsome. This is a particularly interesting item for two reasons: it illustrates a rare piece of original fiction--or near fiction--of which The Sportsman printed very little, and it represents the relatively rare use of a drawing. Most of the magazine's illustrations, with the exception of little editorial vignettes (many done by Smith) and the occasional reproduction of a work of sporting art, were photographs Two sheets, each 14 x 10 inches. Slight marginal soiling, else fine
