Now We Are Six. Signed Copy
|
London: Methuen, 1927. Very Good in Very Good jacket Signed by Author A very good copy and SIGNED in full by A A MILNE to the title page. Ex Library copy with the usual lib labels and bookplates. Previous owners name. 103 delightful pages and drawings all intact and well bound. No tears. No foxing. The original unrestored dust-wrapper has minor loss to the top of the spine join and a chip to the bottom of the spine. A further small chip to the top of the front edge, Still extremely attractive and shows a price of 7/6 net on the darkened spine panel. Outer boards are in the publishers maroon cloth with gold stamped illustrations and lettering-showing Christopher Robin on the front and Winnie The Pooh and Piglet on the rear. This book was a gift to an orphanage in the Southern States of America. It appears as if the young girl who owned this book(Florence Candler Cobb) may have been related to the inventor and creator of the Coca Cola Empire (Asa Candler). The book was eventually given to the Library of St. Mary's-Of-The-Barrens, Perryville, Missouri, which was founded in 1818. The inscription on the book plate is in Latin "Sua fata habent libelli" and translated means "Every book has it's own destiny" This is a wonderful book and a great addition to any collection and is in such good condition for a book of this age. True UK first edition with the extremely rare original dust-wrapper. Scans available.

Lindberghiana].
|
New York u. a. O., zumeist 16. VI. 1927. Batterby, "On the Town in New York", S. 228). Diese "andere Verpflichtung", die Lindbergh kurioserweise dem Festmahl Orteigs vorzog, war das von der "Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America" veranstaltete "Banquet in Honor of Charles Lindbergh", welches diesen Abend im Waldorf-Astoria Hotel stattfand und von dem die hier vorliegenden Erinnerungsstücke stammen. Die Messing-Gedenkplakette zeigt ein Relief der "Spirit of St. Louis" und Legende "Per Aspera Ad Astra", revers die Legende: "Commemorating First Nonstop New York To Paris Flight By Capt. Charles A. Lindbergh May 20-21, 1927. Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America" (in maßgefertigter Samt-Präsentationsunterlage).

Featuring Ununterbrochen Jazz and Bewegtes Licht, this invitation card for a Sturm-sponsored artists ball at the Berlin zoo illustrates a group of marvelous futuristic marionettes by Alexandra Exter, who had settled in Paris in 1924 and focused much of her energies on work in the theatre, and marionettes in particular; Der Sturm gave her a solo exhibition the year of this event. The originality of Exters puppets, although they do belong to a tradition, is total. These Dadaist sculptures combining various 20th-century representational systems and betraying an irresistible sense of humor contain the seed of forms of expression which did not see the light of day again till after the Second World War... (Jean-Claude Marcadé, in Gmurzynska). Small gluestain on verso. Extremely rare.

Eighteen Oyster Lease Field Books of Beds Surveyed by James McConnell, Director of the Oyster Subdivision, Conservation Department of New Orleans. 1927-1929.
|
- For a fee of $16 McConnell surveyed oyster beds leased in the coastal waters south and east of New Orleans. There are literally hundreds of these surveys, drawn in pencil, at scales between 1 inch = 100 feet to 1 inch = 1000 feet, with coordinates, names, locations and dates of leases. What it all amounts to is a highly detailed survey of these waters, pre-Katrina and Betsy, and before many of the improvements that altered these inshore waters. A unique lot of original source material. With four blueprint charts of beds, two newspaper broadsides advertising plans of the Orleans Levee Board, and a letter and photographs from McConnells school days in Canada.

"THE DIARY OF HENRY TEONGE, CHAPLAIN ON BOARD H.M.'S SHIPS ASSISTANCE, BRISTOL, AND ROYAL OAK, 1675-1679. TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT AND EDITED WITH AN INTRODUCTION AND NOTES."
|
"1st. thus, 1927. X + 318 + 4 (advt) pp., frontis + 7 other plates. Maroon cloth; gilt. 23 x 14cm. Spine sunned and with a light stain o/w V.G. With signature of David Woodward's father, 1927. The diary of Henry Teonge, Chaplain, R.N. (1621-1690), written onboard three of the King's ships - ASSISTANCE, BRISTOL and ROYAL OAK between 1675 and 1679. Teonge first went to sea as chaplain to the ASSISTANCE, sent to the Mediterranean from May to November 1675. When the ship was paid off at Deptford the following year he lingered in London to indulge in his fondness for punch and good living before returning to his living at Spernall in Warwickshire. In March 1678 he left his parishioners once more and returned to London where he was presented to the King and eventually gained a warrant appointing him to the BRISTOL at Gravesend. On his arrival on board he and the officers ""did much rejoice in punch and brandy"" to celebrate his safe coming. Teonge's diary is not only entertaining but it also contains many valuable references and observations of shipboard life and customs including the number of shots fired in salute, the excessive amount of drinking, the nature of naval punishments, sanitary conditions, and the causes of death at sea. Aboard the BRISTOL he saw over the side 20 men including the captain between 7 February and 16 May 1679. At Port Mahon Teonge joins the ROYAL OAK until the ship paid off at Black Stakes in the Medway. For all Pepys's reforms, Teonge had to wait a long time before being paid off himself. Pepys had gone to the Tower accused of being involved in a Popish plot and the Navy suffered neglect until he was restored in 1684. The original manuscript of Teonge's diary was first published in 1825 but as Manwaring points out that version omitted several passages and contained many faulty transcriptions, whereas this version of 1927 prints the diary in full for the first time. Manwaring also provides an interesting introduction, notes, and eight illustrations. DIARY OF A 17TH CENTURY NAVAL CHAPLAIN. FIRST FULL & CORRECT TRANSCRIPTION."

Mental Life 2 volumes, 557 + 660 pages, 8vo (220 x 150 mm), illustrated throughout with photographs and sketches, pictorial green cloth, remnants of the dust jackets loosely inserted, a very good set of the second and best edition. Second Edition Revised and Enlarged London 1927 Schapera (I.) Select Bibliography of South African Native Life and Problems, Ethnology 683 (page 106), 'Deservedly ranked as one of the greatest monographs on the ethnography of Africa. Under the headings 'life of the individual; family and village life; national life; agricultural and industrial life; literary and artistic life; religious life and superstitions,' it gives wellnigh exhaustive account of Tonga culture, distinguished especially by its many concrete illustrations of individual variation and of the changes due to the impact of Western civilization. The book is not altogether beyond criticism, and the section on political life is by no means as full as could have been wished, but as a whole it is a magnificent piece of work'.

The brother of noted pianists Sally (a master pupil of Liszt) and Emil was a noted German-American composer and pianist. Superb IPS, 8" X 10", n.p., 1927 November 22. Near fine. A choice, almost sepia tone head-and-shoulders of the balding mustachioed musician. A facsimile "signature" appears in white at lower left (on top of his shoulder), and Liebling signs here large and bold on top of (in effect obscuring) this, dating it beneath his signature and above it adding: "To / Mr. John L. / Leiser / with best / wishes / and / in kind / remembrance / of." Quite handsome and interesting -- and rather scarce as well.

Old Plantation Houses in Louisiana
|
New York: William Helburn Inc., 1927 This is a hardcover copy in a very nice pink dust jacket, that is not price-clipped ($5.00) that is also printed with a woodcut illustration of the fabled "Oak Alley". The book itself is in very good condition, as the light brown cloth covers are very clean and unmarked, even the tipped-on title on pink paper (the same paper as the jacket) looks as fresh as the day it was published. Inside the book there is some offsetting on the printed pink paper paste-down, some foxing to about 10 pages at the beginning and 15 pages or so at the end, otherwise very nice. The dust jacket is almost all there: the back panel is fine, the front panel and spine are present, but there is a small piece missing from the top of the spine which just extends onto the edge of the front panel, not affecting the image or text on the front cover. 10" high X 7 1/2" wide, 162 pages. Text by Natalie Scott. Introduction by N.C.Curtis. About 37 wonderful woodcut illustrations of Louisiana plantation houses by William Spratling, as well as headpiece and tailpiece decorations and other small vignettes for each of the 8 chapters. Index of old houses mentioned or illustrated in the text lists 73 properties. All in all, a beautiful copy in the rare dust jacket. . Cloth. Very Good/Very Good.
