Whitman, Walt
November boughs
|
Philadelphia 1888 - Whitman, Walt. November boughs. Philadelphia: David McKay, 1888. 140 pp. + a final leaf of publisher's advertisements. 8vo, original dark green cloth (a few small spots along the upper joint). First edition, third printing. Whitman's penultimate book, a miscellany of poems, essays, sketches, and reminiscences of the Civil War. This volume was first printed in a run of something over 1000 copies, and bound in maroon cloth, either stiff or flexible, with a frontispiece portrait. Shortly afterwards, a second printing was done as the final part of Whitman's Complete Poems & Prose; of this printing there was no separate issue. This third printing was done three years later, and bound in green cloth without a portrait, as is explained in BAL: "These sheets are probably the 400 copies printed in May, 1891. Whitman originally intended to publish these sheets with Good-Bye My Fancy, 1891, but his illness prevented him from realizing this plan. It seems probably, however, that after Whitman's death his executors had these sheets and the remainder of Good-Bye My Fancy bound in uniform but separate bindings." A couple of old bookseller's descriptions tipped to the front pastedown; a very good copy. BAL 21430. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Yeats, W. B. and Edwin Sidney Hartland
FAIRY AND FOLK TALES OF THE IRISH PEASANTRY together with ENGLISH FAIRY AND OTHER FOLK TALES.
|
London: Walter Scott. 1888 - First edition. Two volumes. Original burgundy cloth with elaborate gilt to the spine and illustrated gold cloth boards. Housed in the original cloth covered card slipcase. All edges gilt. Irish Fairy Tales is the first edition of Yeats second book being selected, edited and with an introduction by him. English Fairy tales is selected, edited and with an introduction by Edwin Sidney Hartland. Both volumes are tight with a little rubbing and light bumping to the board extremities. One page of English Fairy Tales has been carelessly opened resulting in two closed tears (without loss) and some creasing otherwise both volumes and in VERY GOOD condition with no inscriptions or stamps. The slipcase is rubbed and worn to the extremities but is complete and without repair. This would appear to be the most elaborate of the five bindings known for Irish Fairy Tales and the first time we have encountered them in this complete form. Possibly this binding was withdrawn due to the misspelling of Yeats name to the spine. (Wade 212). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

|
London: Printed At The War Office By Harrison And Sons, 1888., 1888. folio. pp. 44. 15 lithographed plates. numerous text diagrams. original printed wrs. (spine chipped, tear to front wr. repaired). Apparently, only 100 copies of this confidential report on the military capabilities of the United States were printed. Major Clarke's paper describes American weaponry, the principal government establishments and private manufactories, including the Naval Academy at Annapolis, the Naval War College, Torpedo Station at Newport, West Point, United States Cartridge Works at Lowell, the National Armoury at Springfield &c. "The general impression I derived was that, thanks to the high technical training provided at Annapolis and at West Point, the United States possess, both in the Naval and Military Service, a quite exceptional number of experts. The results of the knowledge thus diffused would, without doubt, be very marked in the event of war."..

Ward, Humphrey
Robert Elsmere..
|
London: Smith, Elder, 1888. First edition. 3 volumes. Pp, [4], 371, 374, [2] adverts, 410. Bound in original green blind stamped cloth with gilt titles. The original owner Sir James Knowles has written his own library class mark on the spine, 22B. There is a more recent bookplate of T.J. Hardy. An important book. Sir James Knowles wasa famous architect who assisted Tennyson in his business matters and designed his house. He started the Metaphysical Society whose members included Martineau, Huxley, Bagehot, Russell and particularly W.E. Gladstone. James Knowles has written in his own hand in pencil on a free end paper ' This copy of "Robert Elsmere" was lent by me to Mr. Gladstone for the purposes of his review of it published in the XIX Century and contains his own personal notes in his own handwriting" James Knowles. (See also vols 2-& 3)' The marginalia of Gladstone includes the highlighting of paragraphs and especially in volume three his notes, including the use of his well known but enigmatic 'MA'. The book describes how a young clergyman renounces his faith because of intellectual doubts. It was widely read but after Gladstone's review in the Nineteenth Century in May 1888, Robert Elsmere became a best seller. A correspondence of some 9 letters between Gladstone and Ward exist which manifest the interest and respect that Gladstone showed to Mrs. Ward. The book created a sensation at the time in advocating Christianity based on social concern. It was recommending a theology in practice. It had such a powerful effect on Gladstone that it was said that her novel had done that which all other books and all other events had failed to effect. From December 1885 to March 1888 Mr. Gladstone has been able to think of nothing but Ireland and Home Rule. Mrs. Humphrey Ward changed all that. " Although Gladstone was conservative in his theology in his political and social views he can be seen as a liberal, to which Mrs. Humphry Ward had some considerable influence. He met her on a number of occasions to discuss their respective views. A Very Good Copy.

This edition was nicely printed with Sumi or black ink agai- nst white paper. This fine reference gives the exact contents of each book as well as color examples & bibliographic data. * It is quite difficult to find this work in its complete state, as most have been separated and many illustration framed. This work has been used by students since 1679 as a lesson & guide book on the art of Chinese brush painting, and is still now, some 300 years later know as the Classic on Chinese Painting. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: K. While a number of partial and complete Old English translations had been made from the seventh century onward, and Middle English translations particularly during the 14th century, Tyndale's was the first English translation to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, and the first to take advantage of the new medium of print, which allowed for its wide distribution. In 1535, Tyndale was arrested on the orders of King Henry VIII, jailed in the castle of Vilvoorde outside Brussels for over a year, tried for heresy and burned at the stake. He was strangled before his body was burnt. **Will be well-packed for shipping** [ Rosley Books for Antiquarian Theology and Church History. ] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

DUJARDIN, Edouard.
Les Lauriers sont coupés.
|
Paris: Librarie de la Revue Indépendante, 1888 - First edition. From an edition of 420 copies, this is copy number 7 of twenty on 'grand vèlin', with the portrait of the author by Jacques-Emile Blanche in two states. Inscribed by the author, "à M. Phillippe Gille en hommage Edouard Dujardin", and with a minor correction to the text. Original overlapping wrappers, entirely uncut, measuring 21.5 cm. x 17.5 cm. Some of the overlapping leaves are a little dusty, and there is very slight crumpling to the overlapping wrappers, but a lovely, fresh and unworn copy. Edouard Dujardin's life richly resembles that of the prototypical modernist artist yet his career has been overshadowed by a slim volume that announced a revolutionary literary technique. Dujardin was France's 'Perfect Wagnerite', a vocation that began shortly after his enrolment at the Conservatoire in 1879 and that would continue, undiminished, up until the radio broadcast of the 'Liebestod' from Tristan and Isolde that he listened to, a few hours before his death. Les Lauriers sont coupés is popularly known as the first 'stream of consciousness' novel but it was also a work formulated upon Wagner's musical technique and use of leitmotif, and drenched in Wagnerian references, patterns and symbolism. Paradoxically, the particularity of the book has almost been eclipsed by the story of Joyce picking up a copy at a railway kiosk in 1903 and his later championing of it as a precurser to Ulysses. It was partly at Joyce's prompting that Stuart Gilbert, who had collaborated on the translation of Ulysses into French, translated Dujardin's book into English under the title of We'll to the Woods No More, with Joyce himself taking some hand in the work. In James Joyce and the making of 'Ulysses', Frank Budgen quotes a conversation he had with Joyce: ' "I try to give the unspoken, unacted thoughts of people in the way they occur. I took it from Dujardin. You don't know Dujardin? You should." It was not until until 1923 or '24 that Joyce met Dujardin. By that time Joyce's acknowledgement of his debt to the French writer was everywhere known. M. Dujardin presented Joyce with a copy of his book, Les Lauriers sont coupés, reprinted after thirty-five years of oblivion, containing the inscription: 'A James Joyce, maitre illustre, mais surtout à celui qui a dit à l'homme mort et enseveli: Lazare lève-toi' (To James Joyce, renowned master, but above all the one who said to a man dead and buried: Lazarus, come forth.') Some years later I called at Joyce's flat while he was writing on the flyleaf of the French Ulysse. He showed me the flyleaf. On it stood: 'A Edouard Dujardin, annonciateur de la parole intérieure. Le larron impenitént, James Joyce' (To Edouard Dujardin, herald of interior speech. The unrepentant thief, James Joyce').'Sylvia Beach described the Joyce of the 1920s as a 'Wagnerian' and, as Timothy Martin remarks in Joyce and Wagner: a study of influence, "Since Gilbert's book [James Joyce's 'Ulysses': A Study], Wagner's leitmotifs have been conceded an important place in Joyce's work, particularly Ulysses and Finnegans Wake." Dujardin, in a letter to Joyce after his first reading of Ulysses in French, expressed his pleasure in suitably Wagnerian terms: "The sentiment of swimming in an ocean of spirituality, the very one I experienced at twenty when I first heard (without knowing German) the four days of The Ring of the Nibelungs, something, in fact, which makes understandable what the mystics call the vision in God."It is perhaps particularly appropriate that the recipient of this copy of Les Lauriers sont coupés was an artist whose work literally married literature and music. Poet and critic, Phillippe Gille (1831-1901) was also the co-librettist of Delibes' Lakme and Massenet's Manon, as well supplying lyrics for, amongst others, Debussy - whom, coincidentally, Dujardin had met during his time at the Conservatoire when the seeds of this work were first being sown. In Le Monologue Interieur, Dujardin recalled that very few cop [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Kaye's and Malleson's History of the Indian Mutiny of 1857-8
|
London, W.H.Allen & Co. 1888 - Three volumes. Includes e.g.: The Sipahi Army, The Outbreak of the Mutiny, Feebleness in Bengal and strength in Bihar, Durand and Holkar, The North-Western Provinces, Central India, Rajputana, Oudh, The Official Report of the Defence of Lakhnac, The Rising in the North-West, The Dehli History, Progress in Upper India, The Panjab and Dehli, etc. etc. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began as a mutiny of sepoys of the British East India Company's army on 10 May, 1857, in the town of Meerut, and soon erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, with the major hostilities confined to present-day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northern Madhya Pradesh, and the Delhi region. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to Company power in that region, and it was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also known as India's First War of Independence, the Great Rebellion, the Indian Mutiny, the Revolt of 1857, the Uprising of 1857 and the Sepoy Mutiny. Other regions of Company controlled IndiaBengal province, the Bombay Presidency, and the Madras Presidencyremained largely calm. In Punjab, the Sikh princes backed the Company by providing both soldiers and support. The large princely states, Hyderabad, Mysore, Travancore, and Kashmir, as well as the smaller ones of Rajputana did not join the rebellion. In some regions, such as Oudh, the rebellion took on the attributes of a patriotic revolt against European presence. Rebel leaders, such as the Rani of Jhansi, became folk heroes in the nationalist movement in India half a century later, however, they themselves "generated no coherent ideology" for a new order. The rebellion led to the dissolution of the East India Company in 1858, and forced the British to reorganize the army, the financial system, and the administration in India. India was thereafter directly governed by the Crown in the new British Raj. (Wikipedia) 8°. Original red cloth. The boards slightly cracked. Hinges bumped. Still in good condition but may need some repair. Complete with all maps. Rare with the third volume.

His Grace The Duke of Beaufort and Mowbray Morris
Hunting
|
London - Longmans, Green, and Co 1888 - Hardbound volume in brown cloth covered boards, with pictorial front board, and lots of illustrations. The Badminton Library, called in full The Badminton Library of Sports and Pastimes, was a sporting and publishing project conceived and founded by Henry Somerset, 8th Duke of Beaufort (18241899). Between 1885 and 1902 it developed into a series of sporting books which aimed to cover comprehensively all major sports and pastimes. Captain Henry Charles FitzRoy Somerset, 8th Duke of Beaufort KG PC (February 1, 1824 April 30, 1899), styled Marquess of Worcester from 1835 to 1853, was a British peer, soldier and politician, the son of Henry Somerset, 7th Duke of Beaufort. He conceived and planned the Badminton Library series of sporting books, the publication of which began in 1885 with a volume on Hunting, and acted as its overseeing editor. John Sturgess (fl. 1864-1903), was a hunting and racing artist and lithographer who worked mainly for the Illustrated London News between 1875 and 1885, and also exhibited widely in the London galleries, in particular at the Royal Society of British Artists and also at the Royal Hibernian Society in Dublin. He was known for being an accomplished illustrator of books and magazines, but is probably best remembered for his portrait of Blair Athol, the winner of the Derby in 1864. This book previously belonged to Lieutenant General Sir Lewis Stratford Tollemache Halliday VC, KCB (14 May 1870 9 March 1966). He was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. The volume contains Halliday's bookplate on the front pastedown and his signature in pencil on the title page and first page of the volume. On 24 June 1900 at Peking, China, an attack was made on the British Legation by the Boxers who set fire to the stables and occupied some of the other buildings. It being imperative to drive the enemy out, a hole was knocked in the Legation wall and 20 men of the RMLI went in. Captain Halliday, leading a party of six men, was involved in desperate fighting and was severely wounded but despite his injuries, he killed four of the enemy. Finally, unable to carry on any further, he ordered his men to go on without him, after which he was taken to hospital. Condition: The binding is tight and firm with both boards and all pages attached. There is some wear to the extremities including slight bumping to the corners and top and tail of the spine, and some rubbing to the boards and hinges. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and odd spot. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown and two pencil signatures to the title page and first page. Overall the volume is in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

GOEVERNEUR, J.J.A.
Fabelen en Gedichtjes.- Hoe langer hoe Liever.- Vertelseltjes op Moeders Schoot.- Het Laatste Boekje.
|
Hugo Suringar,, Leeuwarden, 1888 - 4 vols. Sm.4to. Contemp. half cloth, with chromo-lithographed plate by Otto Eerelman on front covers. With 98 full-page chromo-lithographed plates by Otto Eerelman, 24, 26, 24 and 24 in the four vols. respectively. 72; 64, (2); 66, (6); 72 pp. Complete set of Goeverneur's fable books, now all published with a series title, Fabelboek, facing the volume title. The number of the editions is no longer mentioned. In the first volume a preface by J.J.A. Goeverneur is present, dated at Groningen, September 27, 1888. In it the author looks back to more than half a century of publication of his fable books. He is pleased that the Leeuwarden publisher, Suringar, took over his fable books from Van Boekeren in Groningen at an early date, and he is also much pleased that the illustrations now are newly made by the famous Dutch animal artist Otto Eerelman (1839-1926). Eerelman was especially famous for his horse portraits, which he both painted and produced in luxurious chromo-lithographs. Eerelman was born in Groningen, but also worked at Paris, Brussels, and in The Hague. For the present chromo-lithographs he made almost one hundred beautiful designs of all kinds of birds and animals, mostly in the company of small children. All volumes still have at the end some educational nursery rhymes for the children to learn by heart. At the end of our second and third volume publisher's advertisements are added. Fine set, rarely found complete. Coll. Tak p. 260 (the 2nd and 4th volume); Cf. Cat. De Koning 603 (ed. of 1882, published in one vol.). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
