[Pike, Zebulon]:
REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE APPOINTED THE TWENTY SECOND ULTIMO, TO INQUIRE IF ANY, AND WHAT COMPENSATION OUGHT TO BE MADE TO CAPTAIN PIKE AND HIS COMPANIONS, FOR THEIR SERVICES IN EXPLORING THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER, AND OF THE OSAGE, ARKENSAW, AND LA PLATE RIVER
|
Washington: A. & G. Way, 1808.. 3,[1]pp. Dbd. Minor age-toning and dampstaining. A very good copy. A report made on March 9, 1808 regarding if and how to compensate Zebulon Pike for his explorations of the Mississippi River. The document prints a letter of praise from Henry Dearborn to Pike congratulating him on his endeavors, and includes the curious mention of one Joseph Ballenger. Ballenger was a sometime companion of Pike who left the expedition to pursue a "Spanish project," but the committee purposefully omits who hired Ballenger and what his task was. Given that Gen. Wilkinson had written Pike's instructions himself, and given Wilkinson's association with Aaron Burr's own Spanish project, Ballenger's errand into the wilderness is doubly suspect. An attractive Pike item, and quite rare. GOODSPEED 417- 432. BRAISLIN 1472. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 16557.

Sir John Froissart's Chronicles of England, France, Spain, and the Adjoining Countries, from the Latter Part of the Reign of Edward II. to the Coronation of Henry IV & The Chronicles of Enguerrand de Monstrelet [COMPLETE IN 26 VOLUMES]
|
#11;1) Froissart, Jean; Thomas Johnes; Sir John Froissart's Chronicles of England, France, Spain, and the Adjoining Countries, from the Latter Part of the Reign of Edward II. to the Coronation of Henry IV. London, 1808. Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, Paternoster-Row, and J. White, Fleet Street. The Third Edition to which is prefixed, a life of the author, an essay on his works, a criticism on his history, and a dissertation on his poetry. 12 text volumes (8vo) & 1 plate volume (4to). Gold-lined leather with gold-decorated spine. Dentelles. Marbled page edges and endpapers. Ex-libris of The Hon. Rev. L. Barrington, Watton on inside of front board. Frontispiece in vol. I, offsetting & some foxing to title-page of same volume. Fascinating chronicles by Sir John Froissart, starting from the latter part of the reign of Edward II. to the coronation of Henry IV. John Froissart (ca. 1338-1410?) was a priest, canon, and treasurer of the Collegiate Church of Chimay. He is considered by many as perhaps the most entertaining and important historian of the Middle Ages. The wars between England and France, as well as the interior manners of the courts of England form the majority of his chronicles but his visits to Spain, Ireland, Italy and Scotland diversify his narrative with many passages from the history of those countries. Translated from the French by Thomas Johnes. Some age wear and minor staining on bindings. Minor chipping to head of spines on few volumes. Sporadic foxing throughout. Slightly heavier foxing on title-page and first few pages in some volumes. Plate volume in quarto but matching binding. Dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Unpaginated. Illustrated with 56 b/w line engravings & a b/w map showing Edward III's march through France from Barfleur to Calais, A.D. 1300. Some staining and age wear on plates volume. Verso of one plate expertly repaired. A complete set, tight copies in overall very good condition. #11;WITH#11;2) Monstrelet, Enguerrand de; Thomas Johnes; Baron Joseph Bonaventure Dacier; The Chronicles of Enguerrand de Monstrelet. London, 1810. Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees Orme, and Brown, Paternoster-Row; and J. White and Co. Fleet-Street. 12 text volumes (8vo) & 1 plate volume (4to). Gold-lined leather with gold-decorated spine. Dentelles. Marbled page edges and endpapers. Ex-libris of The Hon. Rev. L. Barrington, Watton on inside of front board. From title-page: "The Chronicles of Enguerrand de Monstrelet; containing an account of the cruel civil wars between the houses Orleans and Burgundy; of the possession of Paris and Normandy by the English; their expulsion thence; and of other memorable events that happened in the kingdom of France, as well as in other countries. A history of fair example, and of great profit to the French, beginning at the year MCCCC. where that of Sir John Froissart finishes, and ending at the year MCCCCLXVII. and continued by others to the year MDXVI." Important work by Enguerrand de Monstrelet (ca. 1400-1453) on European history from 1400-1467. Monstrelet's writings, dealing with the latter part of the Hundred Years' War, are historically important since they contain a large number of documents which are certainly, as well as speeches which are probably, authentic. Translated from the French by Thomas Johnes. Some age wear and minor staining on bindings. Slight chipping to head of spine on a few volumes. 2" x 1" piece of bottom corner on page 373 in vol. Imissing. Sporadic foxing throughout, some rippling to pages in a few volumes. Plate volume in quarto but matching binding. Dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Unpaginated. Frontispiece. Pulling on bottom edge of title-page, 5 mm of bottom edge on page 5 missing, not affecting text. Tiny puncture on margin of plate 40. Illustrated with 51 (incl. frontispiece) full-page b/w line engravings, one of them being a fold-out. Complete set, tight copies in overall very good condition. #11;Scarce complete set of chronicles by Froissart and Monstrelet in matching bindings. Fascinating work covering English and French history from the end of Edward II. reign up until the early 16th century.

DENON, Domique Vivant
Viaggio nel Basso ed Alto Egitto
|
DENON, Baron Dominique Vivant. Tavole Spettanti al Viaggio nel Basso ed Alto Egitto, Illustrato. Florence: Giuseppe Tofani, 1808. Thick atlas folio (measures 15 by 21-1/2 inches, 3 inches thick), contemporary three-quarter calf gilt rebacked with original spine laid down, raised bands, renewed spine label, marbled boards, renewed endpapers. $10,000. First edition in Italian of Denon's collection of 147 lovely engraved plates, including 71 aquatints with a sepia wash, and three double-page maps. Denon "was one of the train of artists and literary and scientific men who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte to Egypt, where he wielded alternately the pen and the sword, it is said with equal dexterity. His great work on the Egyptian expedition, Voyage de la Haute et Basse Egypte, the numerous drawings for which were made by himself, is alone sufficient to immortalize his name. Napoleon was warmly attached to him, made him Director-General of the Museums, and consulted with him on all matters connected with the Fine Arts" (Bryan's Dictionary). After accompanying Napoleon to Egypt in 1798, Denon returned to France with the first drawings of views and monuments along the Nile, "having worked in extremely difficult circumstances during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign" (Blackmer). Included are three large double-page maps, scenic views, battle scenes, monuments, antiquities, hieroglyphics, plans and spectacular plates of the pyramids and sphinx. Text in Italian. Denon's full account was originally published in 1802 in French, accompanied by 141 plates, and then the following year in English, with 61 plates. Cicognara 2520. See Blackmer 471. Faint marginal dampstain to lower corner of last few plates only, not affecting images. Plates generally quite clean and crisp. Light edge-wear to contemporary calf binding. A very good copy. Quite scarce.

The proceedings of a General Court Martial, held at Chelsea Hospital, on Thursday, January 28, 1808, and continued, by adjournment, till Tuesday, March 15, for the trial of Lieut. Gen. Whitelocke, late Commander-in-Chief of the forces in South America. Taken in Short-hand by Mr. Gurney. With the defence, copied from the original, by permission of General Whitelocke; also all the documents produced on the trial. Vol.I. [ - Vol.II].
|
London: printed for J.C. Mottley, Portsmouth; published by Longman (&c.). 1808 Two vols., 8vo., twofolding engraved maps, (8) + 438 + xxxix + (1) and (8) + 439-830pp., contemporary half calf over marbled boards, skilfully rebacked and labelled. A very good copy. First edition. General Whitelocke's court-martial was the inevitable consequence of his enormous and disastrous ill-judged, and ill-directed, campaign against Spanish forces in Buenos Aires and the Plate region of South America in May - July 1807. 'Whitelocke returned to England on 7 November 1807, and in January 1808 he was court-martialled at Chelsea. ..... The court martial took seven weeks, and Whitelocke faced four charges covering poor diplomacy, military incompetence, and negotiation of a shameful surrender, each barely relevant to what had happened. He was found guilty and was cashiered. His fault lay in taking on a task beyond his capacity, for which those who appointed him should have shared the blame'. [John D. Grainger in ODNB].

GRAVE, A Poem
|
London: T. Bensley, for the proprietor, et al., 1808. The First Edition with BlakeOs plates, a subscriberOs copy as indicated on the engraved title. John QuinnOs copy. Illustrated with twelve etchings [including the engraved titlepage] executed by Louis Schiavonetti, from the original inventions of William Blake. 4to, untrimmed and in the publisherOs original paper boards. Sometime rebacked in matching cloth. 1 p.l., xiv, 36, [4] Rare in such a fine state of preservation.. The Grave was the most popular of all BlakeOs books, and the images are among his most fantastic and well-known. Originally written in 1743 and the only published poem of the Presbyterian minister Robert Blair (1699-1746), The Grave was an immediate success. With the publication of this edition, BlakeOs name became inseparably linked with BlairOs. Commissioned in 1806, BlakeOs illustrations to OThe GraveO constitute a logical suite of designs with rich allegorical meaning. They depict the SoulOs progression from a descent into the Vale of Death up to its admission unto Eternal Life. Forty designs were originally commissioned but only twelve were actually engraved. (Recently however watercolour illustrations of 9 other designs were rediscovered). The actual images were engraved by Schiavanetti, whose smooth engraving style was thought more conductive of commercial success. Blake in fact only realized 20 Pounds from these engravings, and Schiavanetti by comparison nearly 600. Blake also supplied the frontispiece and dedicatory poem for the work. John Quinn was a highly noted early 20th century collector of English and Irish literature. He owned many original and important manuscripts and proofs by Joyce, Yeats, Pound and others.

ADDISON, Joseph
Spectator
|
1808. (ADDISON and STEELE, et al.). The Spectator; A New Edition: Corrected from the Originals, with a Preface, Historical and Biographical, by Alexander Chalmers. London: J. Johnson et al., 1808. Eight volumes. 12mo, contemporary full diced brown calf gilt, mottled spines, marbled endpapers and edges. $1600. Early 19th-century edition, handsomely bound. Presenting essays by Addison, Richard Steele, Alexander Pope, Thomas Tickell and others, The Spectator, originally published 1711-14, "appeared daily, and was immensely popular, particularly with the new growing middle-class readership! The papers are mainly concerned with manners, morals, and literature. Their object is 'to enliven morality with wit, and to temper wit with morality'" (Drabble, 925-6). Addison helped set the pattern and establish the vogue for the periodical in the 18th-century, and cultivated a receptive audience for the emerging art form of the novel. "The Spectator made a mark in English literature, and fixed a form which was adopted with servile fidelity by many succeeding periodicals till the end of the century" (DNB). Bookplate. Scattered foxing to first few pages in each volume, interiors otherwise fine. Contemporary diced calf with only light wear. A very handsome set.

BLAKE, William
Grave
|
1808. FIRST EDITION. (BLAKE, William) BLAIR, Robert. The Grave. London: T. Bensley for R.H. Cromek, 1808. Folio, original gray-brown boards with paper label, sympathetically rebacked, new endpapers, uncut. Housed in custom clamshell box. $7500. First edition to be illustrated by William Blake of Blair's singular poetic achievement, with 12 wonderful plates by Blake and engraved frontispiece portrait of Blake. One of only 589 copies published by subscription. In October 1805, Blake was commissioned by the engraver and would-be publisher Robert H. Cromek to prepare 40 drawings for Robert Blair's Grave, from which Cromek planned to select twenty for this deluxe edition of the poem. While The Grave had originally appeared in 1743, this 1808 edition was to become famous for its illustrations, demonstrating "the rare imaginative power of William Blake" (Magnusson, 162). During the initial stages, Blake and Cromek argued over one of Blake's preliminary "white-line" etchings called "Death's Door," which Cromek finally rejected. But the dispute resulted in Cromek's engaging Louis Schiavonetti, rather than Blake himself, to engrave the 12 drawings eventually chosen. These were rendered by Schiavonetti "with a mingled grace and grandeur which won for them a wider popularity! Never has the theme of death been handled in pictorial art with more elevation and beauty" (DNB). "No great artist has ever been more completely committed to illustration! The Grave became by far the most popular of Blake's works among his contemporaries" (Ray). This 1808 first edition was printed in 589 copies on Whatman paper for subscribers only. It contains the famous Phillips portrait of Blake, Blake's dedicatory poem "To the Queen," a prefatory comment on the designs by Henry Fuseli, and a concluding section "Of the Designs." Also present is the four-page prospectus for Stothard's Canterbury Pilgrims at the rear, often lacking. Keynes 81. Bentley, Blake Books 435B. Ray 6. Lowndes, 215. Moderate soiling to fore-edge margins, small closed tear and crease to page [vii], marginal minor dampstaining to a few plates (not affecting image). A wonderful about-fine large, uncut copy in about-fine condition.

M'NEMAR, Richard
Kentucky Revival, or a Short History of the Late Extraordinary Out-Pouring of the Spirit of God
|
1808. M'NEMAR, Richard. The Kentucky Revival, or, A Short History of the Late Extraordinary Out-Pouring of the Spirit of God, in the Western States of America! With a Brief Account of the Entrance and Progress of What the World Call Shakerism. Albany: E. and E. Hosford, 1808. Octavo, contemporary half sheep, original boards. $2600. Second edition (same year as the first) of "the basic source on Shaker expansion to the West," in original boards and with many early Shaker inscriptions. "M'Nemar is characterized by MacLean as 'the father of Shaker literature' and his account of the sect here is perhaps, next to Benjamin Seth Youngs's The Testimony of Christ's Second Appearing, the most important statement of Shaker doctrine. Bestor, in Backwoods Utopias calls this 'the basic source on Shaker expansion to the West' (Streeter VII: 2940). "Very scarce! Most of the recorded copies are reprint editions" (Eberstadt 132:585). This edition also includes Observations on Church Government, by the Presbytery of Springfield. To Which is Added, The Last Will and Testament of that Reverend Body, one of the most important documents of the Restoration Movement. It marked a step away from a denominational government and a move toward each Protestant congregation functioning as an independent entity, a wholly radical idea at the time. The first edition of The Kentucky Revival was published in Cincinnati in the same year. Sabin 43605. Howes M177. Evans 15474. Several contemporary owner inscriptions, one small sketch, and signatures of Isaac Coffin, Jeremiah Hibbart, Joseph Hibbart/d, and Richard Marden, all early Shakers. Scattered foxing to text, sheep worn off original boards leaving leather on spine only, fully intact. An exceptionally desirable copy of a rare work.
