Hegel, G. W. F.
System Der Wissenschaft. Erster Theil, Die Phaenomenologie Des Geistes
|
bey Joseph Anton Goebhardt, 1807. Octavo, 765pp. First edition of Hegel's majestic Phenomenology of Spirit, the inaugural text for nothing less than a reinvention of Western philosophy. The influence of the Phenomenology on subsequent thought has been both profound and pervasive--in fact it is sometimes difficult to imagine a philosopher writing in the wake of Hegel. Although it has often served as the whipping boy for host of philosophers who have mastered only ordinary language, it has remained the single most potent source of philosophical inspiration for the vast majority of the world's greatest thinkers since its publication. A fresh, attractive very good or better copy in a slightly later (1830s) binding of coated paper-covered boards.

|
London: vol. I: printed by J. Shaw, published under the direction of Mrs. Fiske...; vol. II: printed and published for the Proprietor: by J. Shaw..., [1807-]1808-1809. 2 volumes, quarto. (9 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches). Vol. I with a stipple-engraved portrait frontispiece of the Princess Elizabeth, printed in colours and finished by hand, vol. II with a hand-coloured stipple-engraved emblematic frontispiece in vol. II, 45 (of 46) fine hand-coloured stipple-engraved plates, after W.M. Craig, Charles Heyter and others, 2 sheets of engraved music. (Lacking "figure II" facing p.126 in the first volume). Contemporary half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, spines tooled in gilt and blind. VERY RARE, NO COPIES ARE LISTED AS HAVING SOLD AT AUCTION FOR THE PAST THIRTY FIVE YEARS. The true history of the publication of this highly attractive and informative work can only be guessed at: the first volume is very much the work of Mrs. Fiske. The plates are all of her designs, the text apparently from her pen: the work essentially amounts to an extended advertisement for her business as a Milliner and Dress Maker at 81 New Bond Street. The beautiful costume plates are accompanied by detailed descriptions, and the whole volume is padded out with a somewhat cursory history of fashion worldwide. The second volume is a very different work as the title indicates: the scope of the work is much expanded: the fashion plates record the creations of numerous designers/dress makers other than Mrs. Fisk (Mrs. Millard; Mrs. Marchante; Winn & Hutchins, Miss Bealby; Miss Collins; Mrs. Nixon; etc), in addition to the descriptions of three plates, the text also includes reports of high society social gatherings (King's birthday, etc. ), as well as poetry and some extracts from current novels. Colas II, 2493 (calls for "3 parties in-8" in error, and plate total corresponds to the present set). Some occasional damp markings.

The Man of Feeling. A new edition.
|
Printed for Theophilus Barrois,, Paris, 1807 - In-8°, pp. XI, 167, (2) di catalogo editoriale. brossura coeva color rosa pallido. Bell'esemplare in barbe. Bompiani d. Opere, VII, 609). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Bowditch, Nathaniel.
The New American Practical Navigator: being an Epitome of Navigation.
|
Edmund M. Blunt, Newburyport, MA 1807 - Tall octavo. Eleven engraved plates including a folding frontispiece map of the Atlantic Ocean. Contemporary and possibly original calf with red label. Map with mends to fold tears, front joint with very subtle repair, a very handsome and attractive copy. The second edition, with considerable additions to the First published in 1802. A quite appealing copy with little or no evidence of open-water use of a title renowned for being found in well worn or damaged condition. This edition followed the first by five years, and contains several more plates and over 100 additional pages of text. "Often termed the greatest book in all the history of navigation . an intellectual achievement of our early culture . indispensable to the maritime and commercial expansion of the nineteenth century" - Grolier 100 American, concerning the 1802 edition, also published by Blunt. In 1799, Blunt published "A New American Navigator", based on Hamilton Moore's "The New Practical Navigator", published in London in 1772. Bowditch had taken five long sea voyages beginning in 1795 and made extensive use of Moore's work which he found to be replete with errors. What he initially intended to be a revision of Moore's work instead became an entirely new volume, and Bowditch's legacy. Noted by Howes as the "First accurate navigator's guide." A very appealing copy of a book which, due to it's practical use, is generally encountered in poor condition.

J. Allart, 1807., Amsterdam, - Contemporary half calf, spine gilt. With illustrations on 5 folding engraved plates. - London: W. and T. Darton, 1807. Darton H790 (4), one year after the first editions of 1806. 16mo. Printed paper wrappers with soiling and some surface wear affecting only a little bit of printed text, mainly on rear cover. The first plate has the revised text The Pretty Books in the corner Belong to Little Jack Horner which is revised from the initial self-promotional DartonÕs Books in this Corner Belong to Little Jack Horner (See Appendix I of Childhood Re-Collected). Beneath the six lines of text on each page we have a single word that reflects the emotion or lesson that is represented by this page, e. g. Joy and Concern. An important book whose earlier editions are generally known only in incomplete versions. The hand-coloring is vibrant and lively and this young fellow had a good time, especially with his plum. Najadaceae -
Potamogeton marinus. From: Flora batava by Jan Kops and others.
|
- Amsterdam, J.C. Sepp, 1807, volume 2, plate 152. Hand-coloured engraving (sheet 225 x 278 mm). Text enclosed. Note: The Flora batava, a monumental work forming a beautifully illustrated survey of all indigenous plants in the Netherlands. It was started in 1800 by Jan Kops, a Dutch agronomist and professor of botany at Utrecht. The first 10 volumes constitute all that was prepared and issued under his supervision. When finished at last in 1934, Willem Jan Lütjeharms was the editor for volume 28, in which he concludes that this work has ended now and that publication took longer than any comparable foreign flora: "De Flora Batava heeft langer geleefd dan een der met dit werk vergelijkbare buitenlandsche plaatwerken." The long publication period reflects the change in the technique of its illustrations. Initially copper-engravings were used, followed by lithographs, all coloured by hand, but from volume 25 colour-printing was gradually introduced. Also several artists were involved, but the plates are not signed, nor much information is given about them. Most plates in the first 3 volumes were illustrated by Georg Jacob Johann van Os. He was born in 1782 in The Hague and settled in Paris in 1826, where he worked for the Sèvres porcelain factory and was a painter of flower and fruit pieces, still lifes, etc. These early, finely engraved plates are exquisitely coloured by hand. Each plate is accompanied by a text in Dutch and French. The first publisher, J.C. Sepp en Zoon, was renowned for its scientific colour-plate books. The work was issued in 8vo and 4to. This plate is in the most desirable 4to format. Varrentrapp und Wenner, Frankfurt am Main 1807. XIV+104+74 pages of examples of bills of exchange +one extendable plate. Nice, clean copy in a contemporary half calf binding. * Scarce economic-legal work on bills of exchange, showing plenty of examples of how to make them right and legally binding. Typograhically, it is rather a showcase, as one page of bills can have printing in two different directions.** The copy has belonged to the Danish professor in Mathmatics Henrik Gerner v. Schmidten, who has written his name on the flyleaf. He had brought the book with him to St. Croix, where he died in 1831. His gravestone can still be seen at The Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, Frederiksted, St. Croix.

Code récréatif des Francs-Maçons. Poésies, cantiques et discours à leur usage. Par le F:. Grenier, R:.
NCBEL III, 1274. 5 vols in 1, 8vo, modern calf period style, marbled boards, gilt lettering. ! CoplestonOs first five works and a complete set of his famous pamphlets parodying criticism of the day and in particular the methods of the Edinburgh Review. The editors of the Review replied to CoplestonOs first pamphlet, Advice to a Young Reviewer, with their own attack on Oxford, and a war of words ensued with four more replies from Copleston (all present here), defending the Oxford system. Copleston (1776-1849) was the Bishop of Llandaff and a prominent Oxonian. Advice to a Young Reviewer is considered a classic of literary parody and has been reprinted well into the 20th century.

A Letter to W. Manning, Esq. M.P. on the Proposition Submitted to the Consideration of Government, for taking the Duties on Muscovado Sugar ad valorem
|
Printed by S. & C. McDowall. [1807]. First Edition, [ii],46pp., title and last leaf a little dusty, recent marbled boards, morocco label to spine. !The quality of sugar formed no just basis for taxation. Such a system was inexpedient because it would encourage the production of low-grade product, particularly in the newly conquered colonies which were capable of supplying an almost unlimited quantity of the superior article. It would be impossible to grade sugars properly into the several classes according to which they would be taxed in the proposal under consideration. There would be much fraud to secure the benefit of low rates. Completely side-steps the great fact that it was not equitable to exact the same duty as formerly when sugar had declined to one-third of its one-time value.!!Ragatz, p.281. THE TRIALS OF WILLIAM S. SMITH, AND SAMUEL G. OGDEN, FOR MISDEMEANOURS,HAD IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE UNITED STATES FOR THE NEW-YORK DISTRICT,IN JULY, 1806....

New York. 1807. xxxiii,[3],287pp. Contemporary calf, maroon gilt morocco label. Contemporary ownership and bookplate on front pastedown, same signature also at head of second leaf. Rubbed, joints a bit worn, scattered foxing. Very good. "Colonel Smith, the son-in-law of John Adams, who had been surveyor of the customs at New York, was tried on the charge of initiating the Miranda expedition of 1806. Ogden, a merchant who had furnished ships and supplies for the expedition, was also tried on this charge. The counsel for the defense attempted to show that Smith and Ogden, though they had taken part in the affair, had not actually begun it, that members of the government, including even Jefferson, were cognizant of Miranda's plans, and that moreover Spain and the United States were at the time practically in a state of war. Secretaries Madison and Robert Smith, and others in Washington, who were subpoenaed as witnesses for the defense, refused to appear, but the defendants were finally acquitted. The Trials of William S. Smith, and Samuel G. Ogden, for Misdemeanours, Had in the Circuit Court of the United States for the New York District, in July, 1806. With a Preliminary Account of the Proceedings of the Same Court...
|
New York J. Riley and Co. 1807, First edition. Octavo. xxxiii, [3], 287pp. Contemporary calf, gilt-lettered red leather spine label. Light wear to corners, slight darkening to leaves. Overall, a fine copy without the usual foxing. "Colonel Smith, the son-in-law of John Adams, who had been a surveyor of the customs of New York, was tried on the charge of initiating the Miranda expedition of 1806. In spite of the acquittal Colonel Smith was removed from his position" (Sabin). Miranda had a passion for becoming the Washington of South America and gathered every ruined adventurer in society, including a number of Aaron Burr's friends like Smith for an unsuccessful invasion of Venezuela. Smith and Ogden attracted great public sympathy at the time of their trial because they were fighting for the freedom of all people under "Spanish Tyranny." [Sabin: 84904].

Legendary Island of Antillia - With Scarce Map
[Studies on Antillia Island and America in the Age of Discovery.]
|
Publisher: Industrie-Comptoirs 1807 8vo. 43 pages. Text is in German. A scarce primary resource. This is a complete monthly issue, containing the above mentioned account. Attractively bound booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. This issue contains a fascinating treatise on early theories and subsequent navigations leading to discoveries and colonization of America. Features the legendary island of Antillia (Antilia), which was reputed during the age of exploration to lie in the Atlantic Ocean far to the west of Portugal and Spain. The author dissects assumptions surrounding Antillia with the discoveries of historic voyages by Christopher Columbus and Marco Polo, as well as early charts by Picigano & Bianco, and Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli. With a scarce map to illustrate early concepts of the world, drawing from two ancient manuscript maps, by Picigano and Bianco, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries respectively. An unusual comparative representation together on one engraving. The charmingly illustrated chart by Francesco Picigano was produced in 1367 and shows the northwest coasts of Spain and Africa, as well as the Canary Islands. Also vividly illustrates Viking ships en route for Ireland. Equally fascinating is the chart by Andrea Bianco, originally produced in 1436, with the mysterious landmass he named ‘Antillia’, perhaps a primitive early representation of America. On both charts, the name ‘Infierno’ is given to Tenerife because the Guanches believed the peak to be the entrance into hell. These are the original pages printed in 1807, and NOT a reprint. This narrative is from a rare multi-volume geographical and scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy. Adam Christian Gaspari and Franz Xaver von Zach were editors of this important scientific journal.

Merlo, 2 volumi, copertine originali incise, 8°(cm.23), pagg. Bazin, Antoine Pierre Ernes.
600 pages of autograph manuscripts, with 12 watercolors and drawings on lung anatomy and physiology.
|
circa18361842., Paris: - Circa 600 Pages of Unpublished Autograph Manuscripts on the Anatomy and Physiology of the Lungs and the Physiology of Respiration, with Twelve Watercolor Paintings by Albert Jacquemart, from an Almost Completely Undocumented Period in Bazin's LifeBazin, Antoine-Pierre-Ernest (1807-78). A collection of autograph manuscripts, drawings and watercolor paintings on the anatomy and physiology of the lungs and the physiology of respiration, as listed below. [Paris, 1836-c. 1842] Various sizes. 1 ms. in original wrappers, torn & chipped; the remaining mss. in original unbound state, some soiling and browning, edges of some leaves a little frayed, a few marginal tears. 5 of the watercolors mounted; the remainder loose. Enclosed in two cloth drop-back boxes. Bazin, the son and grandson of physicians, was born in 1807 in the small town of St. Brice-sous-Bois. He studied medicine in Paris, where he impressed everyone with his brilliance: "named successively a hospital extern and intern, he was taught by Dupuytren, Honore, Rostan, Bricheteau, Delarocque, Maury, Biett, and crowned his internship by obtaining the gold medal at the end of a remarkable examination" (Baudot, p. 176). He received his doctorate in medicine in 1834 with a thesis entitled Recherches sur les lesions de poumon dans les fievres dites essentielles (Researches on lesions of the lung in "essential" fevers), and might then have begun on a career commensurate with his remarkable abilities. However, Bazin was unfortunately possessed of a difficult and overbearing personality, and his "utter lack of tact in dealing with influential colleagues" (Besnier, quoted in Crissy & Parrish, p. 150) caused him to passed over in the agrege examinations of 1835 and 1838, which prevented him from obtaining a teaching post in a university or lycee. To Bazin these failures were so discouraging that he abandoned all further efforts toward obtaining a teaching position, instead spending the next several years in relative poverty and obscurity, struggling to advance his medical career both in private practice and at various hospitals. Bazin also attempted during this time to found two medical periodicals-- l'Institut medical (first issue 1839) and Repertoire des etudes medicales (first issue 1848); however, both of these ventures were almost immediate failures, due largely to Bazin's lack of capital. This difficult period in Bazin's life ended in 1847, when he was prevailed upon to accept a post at the Hopital St. Louis; he remained there until his retirement at age 65, and it is there that he began the brilliant and influential dermatological studies for which he is now known. He constructed an elaborate "diathetic" system of dermatologic thought based on the idea that skin disorders were not diseases as such but only the visible manifestations of a few underlying pathological states; this theory enjoyed wide acceptance in France and Great Britain prior to the rise of the germ theory of disease in the 1870s. Bazin published over a dozen books on dermatological subjects, the most important being his influential Lecons theoriques et cliniques sur les affections cutanees de nature arthritique et dartreuse (1860); these, coupled with his great skills as a clinician and teacher, made him one of the great dermatological authorities of his age. His name survives today in the term "Bazin's disease," an alternative name for erythema induratum (see G-M 4051). Although quite prolific in the years after 1850, when his fortunes were secure, Bazin published almost nothing in the unsettled and virtually undocumented period of his life between 1835 and 1847. A search of the sources available to us, including the online databases, NUC and contemporary obituaries (see below), has turned up references only to the two failed periodicals, his agrege theses (Quels sont les caracteres distinctifs de la contagion et de l'infection [1835] and Determiner ce qu'il faut entendre par maladies lymphatiques [1838]), and tw [Attributes: Hard Cover]
