PUISSANT, Louis
|
Chez Courcier, 1807- Paris, 1810.. Quarto, two works bound in one, in total seven folding plates and one folding table, some pages age-toned but overall very good, neatly bound in modern quarter calf, Ingleton bookplate and manuscript note.. A fine volume containing rare first editions of two French works of surveying, said to be from Phillip Parker King's library. Present here are both Puissant's original Traite of 1807, and the rarer supplement from 1810. Louis Puissant (1768-1843), was born in the Champagne region of France, and learnt geometry as part of his early training as a land-surveyor. First employed in the French war department in 1790, his ability meant that he worked in difficult regions like the Pyrenees and the island of Elba. Early in his career he wrote and published a book on the subject of the shape of the earth, and from 1809 directed the Ecole de Geographes in Paris. He is best remembered for his invention of a new map projection of France, which was produced with considerable detail, using spherical trigonometry, truncated power series and differential geometry. The belief that this is Phillip Parker's King's copy is derived from a note in the hand of the important Australiana collector, Geoffrey C. Ingleton explaining how he bought this work "from a descendant of Phillip Parker King, who owned this book." Given King's renown as a naval officer and hydrographer, his ownership of Puissant's significant study is eminently possible, and certainly the date of its publication tailors neatly with the details of his early career. King, family tradition attests, had been encouraged to pursue a career in hydrography by Matthew Flinders. King had first met Flinders as a child, but the two were reaquainted in 1810, shortly after Flinders return from imprisonment under the French. In turn, in 1811 Flinders introduced him to Sir Joseph Banks. Of course, King's own survey of parts of the Australian coast began in 1817. Ingleton's note also comments that he had the book rebound in 1980. Nonetheless, no copy of either of these important works is recorded on the Libraries Australia Gateway. A second enlarged edition was produced in 1820. Brunet, V, 962 (1820 second edition only).

MALTHUS, T(homas) R(obert),
Menger 484; Kress B. 5222; Blaug 561; not in Goldsmiths' Library. [Attributes: First Edition]

Tucker, Abraham
Light of Nature Pursued (An abridgement of the.)
|
T Bensley 1807 - Abridgement of the Light of Nature Pursued, by Abraham Tucker Esq. Originally published in Seven Volumes, under the name of Edward Search Esq. Printed for J Johnson, St Paul's Church-Yard, by T Bensley, Bolt Court. 1807. A rare copy of this book, which is the abridgement. In very good condition for it's age. There is slight ageing and discolouration of the paper, but really remarkably little all things considered. Contents are: Book 1 - Of the Human Mind; Book II - Principles of Human Conduct; Book III - Natural Religion; Book IV - Established Doctrines; Book V - Miscellaneous Subjects. There is also "some account of the life of the author", and a quote from Archdeacon Paley from his "Principles of Moral and Political Philosophy". The binding is tight, with no loose pages or rips / tears etc. The only blemish is that on pages 161/162, and pages 187 -194 there have been some penned notes in the margins of the pages, which have been cut out (the text is still fully legible). There is some underlining, but this is minimal. The binding is very good and tight, with no damage to the spine, although the grey brown boards are mottled and bumped (not severely) round the edges. The book has very possibly been rebound some time in the past, using the original boards, but with new headband (I believe). There is very little foxing to the paper, which is rough cut. I am happy to supply more photos which I can e mail to you - also the book can be viewed at my premises in York. As always, prompt despatch to you from York. Needless to say, this will be sent with insurance and tracking. There may be additional charges for overseas dispatch - please ask, thanks. ; 004428. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[ANTRAIGUES
(Louis de Launay, 1753-1812, Comte d!, French publicist and political adventurer)] Group of 16 Autograph Letter Signed, in French with checklist and translations,
|
addressed to d!Antraigues, by James Tyrrell ROSS (Private secretary, 1807-1809, to George CANNING , the Foreign Secretary, later Prime Minister), written in increasingly familiar terms, but in very guarded language, Ross is acting as d!Antraigues! main contact with Canning and with !Il!, !l!Ami! or !votre Ami!, whom he meets at Gloucester Lodge (Old Brompton, bought by Canning in 1809), thanking him for information, arranging for copies of leaflets to be distributed on the coast of France, referring to !le General! (probably Puisaye, see below), setting up meetings at dinner, and asking him to use an ordinary seal (!cachet!) rather than his personal one, together 30 sides mostly 8vo, written from Spring Garden, St. James! Street, Gloucester Lodge, or the Foreign Office, 6th February - 18th December 1809 and no place, no date, but London c. 1809 The Count, a Gascon of the Cevennes, had been a Republican in 1788, a member of the Assembly of 1789, a Monarchist in 1790 and had then emigrated to Venice, Vienna, Dresden and finally London (1806), his love of intrigue being stronger than his ambition. He was the confidant and correspondent of the Comte de Provence (Louis XVIII), Maria Carolina of Naples, the Tsar, and, once in England, of Canning. His credibility, it was rumoured, was increased by revealing secret terms of the treaties of Tilsit, June 1807, between Napoleon and the Tsar, which Canning forestalled by ordering the attack on the Danish fleet in Copenhagen. At the end of his career he lost credibility and he and his wife, the singer Saint-Huberty, were assassinated in mysterious circumstances, by a servant dismissed the previous day, outside their cottage in Barnes Terrace. See, for example, !The D!Antraigues phenomenon: the making and breaking of a revolutionary royalist espionage agent!, 1985, by Colin Duckworth, also d!Antraigues! unpublished !Mes Soliloques! (Bibliotheque Nationale, Achat no. 23055).#11;After Tilsit, Louis XVIII deemed it prudent to leave Mittau in the Tsar!s dominions and planned to settle in England. Canning was unhappy and insisted that he live at least 50 miles from London. By this time d!Antraigues had no great love for Louis XVIII, who preferred the counsels of the Comte d!Avaray. d!Antraigues joined General Puisaye, then one of the chief emigres in London, in attacking d!Avaray in Vol. VI of Puisaye!s memoirs (January 1809), in all probability the !matter of the General! referred to in the present letter of 11th February. d!Avaray and his friends tried to provoke Puisaye to a duel, and Puisaye retired to Devon. The present letters show Canning!s continued support for d!Antraigues. A main source for d!Antraigues! correspondence from 1807 to early 1809 is his many letters to Puisaye (see the BL MSS ) and the present letters take up where the latter cease.#11;Checklist:#11;1. St. James Street. Wednesday [perhaps early in 1809]. About the number of copies of a document, and a letter for Canning.#11;2. Foreign Office, 6th February 1809. St. James Street, 18th December 1809. Forwarding two letters [not present] from !your Friend!.#11;12. St. James! Street. Sunday. ACTS PASSED AT THE SECOND SESSION OF THE NINTH CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES
|
Washington City 1807. 8vo, 6" x 9". Bound in the original blue wrps, (219)-352, i-iv, Index 1-29. Of significant importance because of the inclusion of the first printing of a law abolishing the importantion of slaves, effective in 1808. The law had teeth in it, and, if enforced, would ended the slave trade. However, adequate funding was not provided until the time of the Civil War. Further, the fate of the confiscated, or illegally imported slaves was left to the individual states. In the South they were sold into slavery. Covers heavily stained and worn, small damp stain in the center of the first few leaves, the remainder a little browned but generally good. The slave law begins on page 262 and runs to 272. Not a pretty copy, but still an important piece of American slavery history. . First Edition.

Dalton, John.
Autograph letter signed to Abraham Bosquet.
|
1807. Dalton, John (1766-1844). A.L.s. to Abraham Bosquet. N.p., June 15, 1807. 3pp. plus address, on single sheet measuring 202 x 323 mm. Tears where seal was broken mended at an early date, another small hole minimally affecting one word, light wear along creases, minor foxing, but very good otherwise. Docketed by recipient. An excellent letter from one of the founders of modern chemistry, discussing both scientific and social matters, and ending with a somewhat risqué bit of political verse, revealing an ease and sense of humor in marked contrast to Dalton's "quiet and reserved" public manner. Dalton is best known for his chemical atomic theory, "which for the first time gave significance to and provided a technique for calculating the relative weights of the ultimate particles of all known chemicals" (DSB); he also, early in his career, made significant contributions in physics, discovering the law of gaseous expansion at constant pressure (also known as Charles's law), and the law of partial pressures in gaseous systems. The letter we are offering here dates from the year that Dalton's interests shifted from physics to chemistry: in April 1807 (three months before the date of this letter) Dalton gave a lecture course in Edinburgh in which he made the first direct mention of "indivisible particles" or atoms, and set forth the groundbreaking ideas that he would begin to publish the following year in his New System of Chemical Philosophy (1808-27). Dalton's letter reveals his interest in medicine and anatomy: he prescribes a regimen of diet and exercise to a friend he thinks is "making fat too fast," and boasts of having acquired "a very fine arm & leg most famously & scientifically dissected" on which he could practice dissection. Dalton's postscript verse, lampooning the "bad luck" of "Bonapart," may refer to the Battle of Eylau (February 7-8, 1807), which ended in bloody stalemate and marked the first significant check to the advance of Napoleon's Grande Armée. Ironically, Dalton wrote the present letter one day after Napoleon's decisive victory in the Battle of Friedland (June 14, 1807), an event of which Dalton could not yet have been informed. The text of Dalton's letter is as follows: 15th June 1807 My Dr. Bosquet On the night I wrote you, I went to Sadlers Wells, and on driving myself home from that place the night being extremely dark, and turning on the pavement out of the road to Fitzroy Square, I fell from my box and met with so bad a contusion on my right side, that I was not able to quit my room before last Saturday. I assure you I was more grieved at being prevented the pleasure of accompanying you to my friend David than I was at the pain I felt from the accident, particularly so as I then had the means, of making ourselves very comfortable for two or three days. I beg you will do me the kindness to make the above known to your son, at the same time with my best wishes remembering me to him. You may recollect I some time since, mentioned to you, I held some two or three hundred manuscript sermons of a Divine of celebrity. I have now twenty or more of them in my possession, which I will one night this week bring over to you, the residue I can procure when necessary, weigh in your mind whether an immediate purchaser may not be got for them. I saw [Hanyer?] the other day I am afraid he is making fat too fast, if so he should resort to cold bathing a milk & vegetable regimen with very little animal food gentle exercise with no other beverage but port wine, or port wine & water. If the constitution is clear of minerals the happiest & most lasting effects have been derived from cold bathing and the before mentioned mode of living. Doctor Cheyney informs us, of a man's living to a hundred & six years of age, that is 46 years after two violent attacks of an epilepsy by resorting to cold bathing a milk & vegetable diet &c. So much from Doctor Dalton & if you wish me to prescribe for the Gent. I do assure you I can & will, most effectually with pleasure. I have just purchased (really you may believe me) a very fine arm & leg most famously & scientifically dissected, upon which I am most attentively studying dissection, that I may with dexterous art, be ready to use my Clunabulum [literally "small sword"] by way of friendship, upon the carcass of any Joltering Gl[...] who after being convicted, may miss being suspended in the Darby's-Give my love to Charlotte and believe me with great esteem & regard, Yours very sincerely, J. Dalton a momentary sketch of accidents: They say the Bonapart has lost his Prick (had bad luck) That politics are confounded, That the Queen de Prusse, has playd the trick (with Europe & Russia) And the messenger, been drown'ed (Pn. mess'r lately drown'd) JD Damnation bad I suppose you'll say, or I shall go on in this here vay Dalton's letter was written to Dr. Abraham Bosquet, author of treatises on marine technology and on dueling. It is not cited in Smyth's bibliography of Dalton's works, which includes a section on Dalton's correspondence. DSB.

. . . 4to. [8] 86 [2, incl. errata]pp. Paris: Courcier, 1807. 268 x 206 mm. Modern quarter morocco, marbled boards in period style. Light soiling, a few edges frayed, but very good. 19th cent. stamp of Stonyhurst College on half-title. /p#11;p First Edition. Announces Budan's independent discovery of what is now known as the rule of Budan and Fourier, which gives necessary conditions for a polynomial equation to have n real roots between two given real numbers. "The need for such a rule as his was suggested to Budan by Lagrange's Traite de la resolution des equations numeriques (1767). . . . Budan's goal was to solve Lagrange's problem-between which real numbers do real roots lie?-purely by means of elementary arithmetic. Accordingly, the chief concern of Budan's Nouvelle mEthode was to give the reader a mechanical process for calculating the coefficients of the transformed equation in (x - p). He did not appeal to the theory of finite differences or to the calculus for these coefficients, preferring to give them 'by means of simple additions and subtractions.' . . . Budan's rule remains the most convenient for computation" (DSB). /p

Dennis Jasper. [Pseudonym Charles Robert Maturin] Murphy
Fatal Revenge; or, the Family of Montorio. A Romance
|
The author's first book. From his beginnings as a Gothic novelist, Maturin was addicted to ultra-complicated plots whose dramatic commotion rivals the tangled tragedies of blood of the Elizabethan playwrights, and Jacobean melodramatists - Marlowe, Tourneur, Webster, and Chapman. The infinitely elaborate trappings of the Elizabethan revenge play seem to serve Maturin as a model for Montorio... To supplement the revenge plot, there is also plenty of monastic and inquisitional atrocity and a shrill style of poetic horror that will later become central in Melmoth the Wanderer. - Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 1-242. A remarkable novel, superior even to Melmoth the Wanderer in atmosphere and color, though very difficult to follow. - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1133. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 1-62. Bleiler (ed), Supernatural Fiction Writers: Fantasy and Horror, p. 164. Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 285. XX, 534 pp. First Dutch edition of a popular manual for the young farmer, especially on cattle breeding, by the German author Albrecht Thaer (1752-1828). The book was adapted into Dutch by J.F. Serrurier (1771-1844), with a letter of recommendation by Jan Kops (1765-1849). Both Serrurier and Kops greatly contributed to the education of Dutch farmers in the 19th century. Thaer on his part had based his book on the latest developments in English agricultural science, which at the time served as a model for Europe in this field. Travels Through The Canadas, Containing A Description Of The Picturesque Scenery On Some Of The Rivers And Lakes; With An Account Of The Productions, Commerce, And Inhabitants Of Those Provinces. To Which Is Subjoined A Comparative View Of The Manners And Customs Of Several Of The Indian Nations Of North And South America.
|
4to. pp. xii, 602, [2]plate list & ads. folding hand-coloured engraved map of the St. Lawrence & 27plates: 26 aquatints (6 folding) & 1 line engraving. 19th century half chagrin (bit rubbed, front joint cracked, plates offset as always, short tear in 1 plate repaired). London: Printed For Richard Phillips, 1807. First Edition. This is a variant issue, with the plates printed in black and white on thin paper, rather than in sepia on thick paper. Heriot’s position as deputy post-master general of British North America (1800-16) required that he travel extensively throughout the Canadas. As Spendlove remarks, the appointment was a fortunate one for posterity, for it was on these numerous journeys that he produced his many exquisitely fine watercolour and ink sketches, some of which form the basis of the present work. Like the majority of the topographical artists of his day, Heriot had studied under Paul Sandby at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and was certainly one of his most accomplished pupils. Spendlove considered him to be the finest watercolourist working in Canada at the time. “Illustrated books on North America are curiously few in the period with which we deal. By far the most interesting is Heriot’s Travels Through the Canadas...interesting for its aquatints by Stadler and Lewis after Heriot.” (Prideaux) The charming plates include views of Quebec from Port Levi, the Azores, St. Paul’s Bay, Quebec from the Citadel, Quebec from Beauport, Falls of Montmorenci (two), Jeune Lorette, Falls of Chaudière, Falls of La Puce (two), Ruins of Château Richer, Lake St. Charles, River Etchemin, Bridge on the Jacques Cartier, Montreal from the Mountain, Cascades of the St. Lawrence, Fort of Niagara, Whirlpool of the Saint Lawrence, Falls of Niagara (two), Grande Chaudière on the Outaouais River, and depictions of French Canadian dancing (two), an Indian encampment, and Indian costume. Besides being “the earliest and the most important aquatint book published on Canada” (Hill), Heriot’s book provides one of the best contemporary accounts of the Loyalist settlements in Canada as well as much interesting information on the fur trade, travels in the North, the cod fisheries, &c. The second part of the work contains a detailed description of American Indian cultures, largely derived from the works of Lafitau, Lahontan, and others, as well as from Jesuit manuscripts at Montreal. Included is Father Rasle’s vocabulary of the Algonquin languages. Dionne II 934. Field 687 (24 plates). Gagnon I 1657. Hill pp. 142-43. Lande 433. Morgan p. 184. Pilling, Algonquian, p. 229. Prideaux pp. 254-55. Sabin 31489 (29 plates). Streeter VI 3658. TPL 805. Vlach 390. cfAbbey, Travel, 618 (describing a coloured folio atlas issue of the plates, without the text).

It is commended to the general reader no less by an impartial admiration for the heroes on both sides than by the spontaneity of its style. Its accuracy was the more firmly established by the inevitable attacks of actors in the scenes described, who thought the parts they had played undervalued." (D.N.B.). As a military historian Sir William Napier is incomparably superior to any other English writer [He] always wrote as if he was burning with an inextinguishable desire to express what he was feeling, which gives his style a peculiar spontaneity, and yet he rewrote the first volume of his History no less than six times. His descriptions of sieges and of battles are admirable by themselves, and his analyses of the peculiarly intricate Spanish intrigues are even more remarkable, while the descriptions and analyses are both lit up by flashes of political wisdom and military insight. It is to be noted that he displays the spirit of the partisan, even when most impartial, and defends his opinions, even when most undoubtedly true, as if he were arguing some controverted question The portraits of Sir John Moore and Colonel M?Leod, and the last paragraphs descriptive of the storming of Badajoz, may be taken as examples of his great natural eloquence."
Marmorierte Pappbde d. Z. (berieben, Ecken bestoßen) mit türkisfarb. RSchild und etwas Filetenvergoldung. Buntpapiervorsätze.
|
Berlin, Johann Friedrich Unger, 1807. Goed. VI 28, 4 und VII 679, 310, 7a. Fromm VI 24662 (Titel ungenau zitiert). Borst 1062.

"HEGEL, G. W. F."
"Wissenschaft der Logik."
|
"Octavo, 3 volumes: 334pp, 282pp, 403 pp. Rare complete set of the first edition of Hegel's Scienceof Logic. First two volumes (which together make up ""die objektive Logik"") are in contemporary paper-covered boards, with handwritten paper labels on the spines. The third volume (""Wissenschaft der subjectiven Logik, oder die Lehre vom Begriff"") is in a later 19th Century binding of marbled paper over boards and embossed leather label on the spine, bound to a slightly smaller height than the others. The Science of Logic is the first statement of Hegel's mature systematic philosophy, building on the 1807 publication of the Phaenomenologie des Geistes. The delights of Hegel’s Logic will come as a surprise to most readers who wouldn’t normally consider reading a book containing the ""L"" word in its title – an intellectual tour de force on the order of another great and utterly gratifying read the same class of reader would typically eschew for a similar reason: Spinoza’s Ethica ordine geometrica demonstrata. The set is lightly edgeworn, but otherwise quite lovely. Housed in custom half-morocco clamshell box."

CERATI, Gregorio.
Poetry by the bishop of Piecenza La genesi. Versione di Monsignor D. Gregorio Cerati gia Vescovo di Piacenza.
|
Parma, Tipi Bodoniani, 1807.. 8vo. Original boards covered with yellow sprinkled paper; red sprinkled edges. (2), LX, (2), 260, (3) pp.. Original, only and elegant edition of this posthumously published poetical work by the bishop of Piacenza. The book opens with an extensive dedicatory letter by the editor, the bishop's nephew Antonio Cerati to Giambatista Bodoni (p. I-LIX), also containing a description of the life of Gregorio Cerati. Antonio was professor and later president of the University of Parma and therefore Bodoni was hardly in the position that he could refuse to print these poems.Cerati (Parma 1730-Piazenza 1807) who was created bishop of Piacenza by Ferdinando di Bordone in 1783, composed his work on the origin of the world in Italian 'terze rime', at the instigation of the poet Prospero Manara and although the poems were eulogized very much by famous Italian poets as Frugione and A. Mazza, Cerati didn't want to have them printed before his death. Very good copy. Ed. The Rev. Timothy Priestley
The New Evangelical Family Bible: Vol. 2
|
Alexander Hogg, London 1807 - Lovely early 19th century large-format Bible, originally published c.1792. This is the very rarely available second volume, containing Isaiah to Revelation, together with the Index and Concordance, as well as the List of Subscribers and the Directions to the Binders. This last-mentioned section directs that the engraving of Isaiah's Commission to Hezekiah be bound as a frontispiece, whereas in fact it is bound within Isaiah. Book is in quarter leather finish with marbled boards; both boards are worn and the front board is detached but present; the remainder is soundly held, the whole being a typical early 19th century tight-binding. Inside is printed in what looks like a Baskerville-style font on the inevitable hand-made paper and surprisingly clean throughout, with no obvious marking or damage; all edges neatly ploughed. Book is not formally paginated but is almost three inches thick between boards. This copy is numbered 153. Further details are available on request from the bookseller. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
