This is one of Burmeister's earlier major publlications and went through seven editions up to 1867 as well as a French translation in 1870: Histoire de la Création. FLAXMAN.
Compositions from The Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise of Dante Alighieri by John Flaxman, sculptor.
London. Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme. 1807. Oblong Engraved title page and 110 engravings. Contemporary morocco-backed boards, slightly rubbed. Some foxing to plates, mainly light and in the margins. In 1792 Thomas Hope commissioned from Flaxman 109 drawings to illustrate The Divine Comedy. He then had them engraved by Piroli for a small private edition which not even the artist's friends were allowed to subscribe to. But enough copies were in circulation for both Goethe and A.W. von Schlegel to have seen them by the time they wrote their enthusiastic assessments of Flaxman in 1799. Probably because a pirated French edition appeared in 1802, a public English one was issued in 1807 at four guineas.

ROMAGNOSI GIANDOMENICO
GENESI DEL DIRITTO PENALE. EDIZIONE SECONDA. MILANO, AGNELLO NOBILE, 1807. 4 VOLL. IN-8 PICCOLO (23 X 13), DI PP. (8)+142; PP. (2)+131; PP. (4)+182+(2); PP. 156+(16). NEL PRIMO VOLUME ANTIPORTA ALLEGORICA INCISA SU RAME. BROSSURA ORIG. MUTA IN CARTA AZZURRINA, CUSTODIA CARTONATA PROTETTIVA. FIORITURE PER LA QUALITA' POVERA DELLA CARTA, MA BUON ES. (5827)
Cfr. Mistrali,Gian Domenico Romagnosi, pp. 59-60; e E. Sestan, Opere di Romagnosi Cattaneo e Ferrari, nelle note introduttive.

SAINT HELENA.
Appropriation of Ordnance to the Defence of St. Helena.
London: Printed by J. Gold, Shoe Lane, 1807. - First Edition, 12mo, iv, [5]-27, [1] pp., original printed wrappers, stitched as issued, a good copy. This book gives a detailed explanation of the defences that Colonel Patton, governor of St. Helena, took to improve the island from attack. The island has shear cliffs on all sides which rise from 400 to 1,000 feet, and are inaccessible to an enemy from the sea. Guns and Canons were placed at the top of these heights and were able to fire directly down on any debarking troops and command the approach by sea. He had the advantage of employing the invention of Colonel Shrapnell's exploding 'round case shot' with fuses to explode them over the enemy. These are the shells that soon earned the name shrapnel. "Every piece of ordnance intended for the defence of the interior of St. Helena, whether mounted upon garrison or field carriages. ought to depress as far as fifty degrees. and the landing places in many situations requires this depression." Patton devised traversing and horizontal platforms for garrison guns and field ordnance at strategic elevated positions on the cliffs. The perpendicular height of every maritime post from sea level was measured and a table formed for each of the stations, that gave in yards the distances which corresponded to the degrees and minutes of the angle of depression. Of these tables three were completed, one for Ladderhill, one for Rupert's Point, and one for Goat-pound Ridge. The advantages derived from the platforms mostly depended on high situations, and therefore were most exclusively appropriated to St. Helena. **** The notes for this book were written on board his Majesty's ship Sir Edward Hughes, on Patton's homeward journey to England. He hoped that "his suggestions might possibly be found of some advantage to the service of his sovereign. [and] for these purposes he brought models with him of the carriages and platforms which he had adopted at St. Helena." - Preface. Not in the NSTC; COPAC; OCLC or RLIN.

Robinia Viscosa
Stipple engravings, printed in color and finished by Hand, Large paper edition, Paris, 1807-35 - These undeniably lovely engravings of fruit and flowers by Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau are superb examples of the lauded eighteenth-century polymath’s work. Du Monceau lived a duel life as a French naval engineer and botanist, and published several books on both subjects. He was an instrumental member in the foundation of the "Académie de marine de Brest" in 1752. While he is remembered for his long and checkered career as an engineer, it is his contribution to botany and horticulture that has left a lasting impression in the world of botanical illustration. Du Monceau began his career as a botanist when he was requested by the Academy of Sciences to investigate a disease which was destroying the saffron plant in Gâtinais. As a result of his studies he discovered the cause in a parasitic fungus which attached itself to the roots. This achievement gained him admission to the French Academy of Sciences in 1728. For the next half century he would occupy himself with experiments in plant physiology. Similar to other botanical illustrators such as Georg Dionisis Ehret and Redoute, Du Monceau’s oeuvre was most likely created out of a desire to showcase new plant species with scientific accuracy. Their beauty is an unintended, though pleasant, consequence.

Leichte Alters- u. Dislokations-, wenig eigentliche Gebrauchsspuren. Gesamthaft weitestgehend sauberes, recht gutes und attraktives Exemplar.. Antike. (A. Leski, Geschichte der griechischen Literatur. 2. Aufl. 1963, p. 532).

JUNOT, Andoche, duc

Pennsylvania. Laws, statutes,
An act for the regulation of the militia of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. [with] Steuben, Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin, Baron von. Regulations for the order and discipline of the troops of the United States.
Lancaster (PA) John R. Mathews 1807 12mo (17.2 cm, 6.75"). 64, 5-85 (lacking prelim. ff., pp. 1-4 &81/82), [1 (blank)] pp. (lacking plts.). Developing state and private militia companies proved to be a troublesome issue for Pennsylvania well into the 18th century, largely because of Quaker influence; the first Militia Act was not passed until 1755, and the first document in this 1807 volume implies that the system was still in flux, at least to some degree. The militia regulations passed by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1807, here in a Lancaster, Pennsylvania, imprint of the same year, update and in some particulars supercede the Act of 1802; they are here bound as issued with Baron von Steuben's classic military treatise printed in the same year by the same publisher. Commonly referred to as the "Blue Book" (for the color of its original wrappers), the Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops was written by Von Steuben, the first Inspector General of the United States Army, based on his experience training Washington's troops at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. First printed in 1779, it remains in use, in modified form, even today-and its combination here with another contemporary document of obvious importance for soldiers and officers, with a Pennsylvania provenance and in an original binding, provides a very pleasing artifact of military history Provenance: Among several early ownership inscriptions on the front pastedown and title-page is one reading "John Ebling Captain." Several different John Eblings, most hailing from Berks County, PA, are recorded as having served in Pennsylvania companies. Act: Shaw & Shoemaker 13330/13331 (second listing giving this pagination but not identifying second work). Regulations: Shaw & Shoemaker 13649. Both: Sabin 91457. Contemporary mottled sheep, showing expectable damage from acid binding treatment, wear, and a few pin-type wormholes. Early inked ownership inscriptions as described above, one dated 1828. Many corners dog-eared; pages gently age-toned with some darker spotting. Second work with plates, preliminary leaves, title-page, and pp. 81/82 lacking; some leaves loosening. With faults but still fascinating.

CHAPONE, MRS. [HESTER]
The Posthumous Works of Mrs. Chapone. Containing Her Correspondence with Mr. Richardson; A Series of Letters to Mrs. Carter, and Some Fugitive Pieces, Never Before Published.
London: Printed for John Murray and A. Constable, 1807. First edition NCBEL II, 1598. 2 vols in 1, contemporary marbled paper boards recently rebacked in quarter calf period style, red morocco label, gilt rules and lettering. Bound without the half-titles. ¶ An important edition of Mrs. Chapone's works, which publishes for the first time some of her earliest writings including her interesting letters to her friend Samuel Richardson: “It was her widely circulated letters to Richardson (written in 1750–51) concerning a woman's right to exercise her judgment and consult her emotions in refusing an arranged marriage, which made [Chapone] something of a cause célèbre in her youth. The letters, published posthumously argue passionately, but in the abstract, for romantic love and companionate marriage. [She] treats with high seriousness the contradiction in acknowledging women's rationality and abstract equality while denying them moral agency, but deals with the problem by maintaining a complaisant if teasing voice—she cajoles her obstinate opponent” - DNB online. Chapone uses Richardson's character Clarissa as an example throughout her letters. Binding a little tight; some light foxing; contemporary bookplate on the front paste-down; modern bookplate on the front free endpaper; very good copy.

MacGowan, John
Internal Conference: or, Dialogues With Devils
Halifax, [Nova Scotia]: Printed at the Office of J. & J. Nicholson, 1807 - Macgowan (1726-1780) was a Baptist minister in London whose Calvinist preaching won a considerable following in North America.Ò [He] É was probably more effective with his pen than in the pulpit, certainly if the number of titles authored and the frequency of their reprinting be any criteria. He had a considerable following in America as well as in Britain, and his works were translated into Welsh and Gaelic. His publications, some of them published under the pseudonym the Shaver or Pasquin Shaveblock, included most significantly The Arians and Socinians Monitor (1761), Priestcraft Defended (1768), and Dialogues of Devils (1772). His style could be ironic and caustic, even menacing and censorious, effecting a dogmatism, that not all shared, in passing sentence on the doctrinal deviance of others beyond the scope of that allocated to humankind, who must always be ignorant of belated reformation and repentance. In his devotional writings he was criticized for being too fanciful ÉÓ Ñ ODNB 8vo. . Contemporary quarter calf and marbled boards. Spine defective and disintegrating, text dampstained. "Since I had last the pleasure we have received news of importance and as I am sure you will be anxious to know every thing in our favour I have the pleasure of as[s]uring[g] you that Urquisa has been obliged to retire from Corrientes. Yesterday we have had two of his men passed over to us from Entre Rios and they have informed us, that Urquisa with his army of five thousand and odd men marched up into the province of Corrientes as far as a place called Tranquera de Loreto, and from this place he has c[o]untermarched and two days ago was in the Puntas de Unqueri, he has maid [!] this c[o]untermarch with the greatest presipitation [!] having a great number of horses in his way besides some other of the best that the Correntinos took from them in Mocoreta [...]" (a. d. Br. v. 10. Salto, Guabillu, Yaguari, Montevideo, Mercedes u. a., 1846 und 1846.

Travels in the Year 1806 from Italy to England...Containing the Particulars of the Liberation of Mrs. Spencer Smith.
Portrait frontispiece of de Salvo, lx and 296 pp. 12mo, full calf, expertly rebacked many years ago. London: Printed for Richard Phillips, 1807. One of several London editions, no priority established. The Dedication is signed by W. Fraser who stated that he translated the narrative from a manuscript of the Marquis de Salvo. Mrs. Constance Spencer Smith was one of the daughters of Baron Herbert (for many years Austrian Internuncio at Constantinople) who was the wife of Spencer Smith, English Minister at Stuttgard, and sister-in-law of Admiral Sir Sidney Smith. Mrs. Smith, while staying in Venice with her sister, the Countess Attems, on account of her health was arrested in 1806 by the order of Napoleon, who planned, it was said, on sending her as a state prisoner to Valenciennes. The Marquis de Salvo, a young Sicilian was a friend of the Countess Attems, and a profound admirer of her sister. He determined to rescue her from the French police. This is the account of his successful venture. Set against the turbulent and ever-changing times of the Napoleonic Wars. Byron, a few years after this narrative was written had a brief affair with Mrs. Smith. TRAVEL NAPOLEONIC WARS

HOPE, Thomas
Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, executed from designs by Thomas Hope.
      T. Bensley London, 1807. Folio, half title, engraved title and 59 full page engravings, early owner's inscription dated 1868, some scattered foxing and a little dusted at the margins; otherwise a fresh copy in recent paper boards, retaining engraved large section of descriptive wrapper pasted to front board. A very good copy of the first edition of one of the first major works to document the Regency style, and an important sourcebook for many nineteenth-century painters: William Michael Rossetti's copy.Thomas Hope (1769-1830), the Regency collector, writer and decorator, was from a family of influential merchant bankers known. Supported by enormous private wealth, his family was renowned for their estate at Groenendaal Park, the extensive public gardens of which were opened to the public by Hope's father. Hope himself was interested in the arts from a very young age, and his taste encouraged during his Grand Tour of Europe, Greece, Turkey and Egypt. He bought his London home in Duchess Street in 1799 and early decided to make it a showpiece for his new design aesthetic. The attractive perspective and plan engravings here actually illustrate the furniture and interiors of the house. The interiors, which depict not only classical styles but also the modern taste for Egypt, India, and Moorish Spain, were intended to influence public taste. One of the plates depicts Hope's famous Regency Egyptian Revival style armchairs: the actual chairs have been since 1984 been a centrepiece for the collection of the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. This copy has an early ownership inscription by William Michael Rossetti, the English writer and critic. Rossetti, the brother of Dante Gabriel and Christina Georgina, was one of the seven founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848, and became the movement's unofficial organizer and bibliographer. It is interesting to note that Dante Gabriel Rossetti was known to have drawn widely from Hope, underlining just how this was a core work for the Pre-Raphaelites (see Frances van Keuren, 'Thomas Hope's costume of the Ancients and the painters George Cooke and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Magazine Antiques, July 2008, online). It is known that Dante Gabriel Rossetti had the work in an 1841 reprint, and that he borrowed a copy of the original edition from Algernon Charles Swinburne (who complained how about how long Rossetti was in returning it).

GRANT ( Sir John Peter )
Some observations on the constitution and forms of proceeding of the court of session in Scotland ; with remarks on the bill now depending in the House of Lords for its reform
Printed for W. Clarke and Sons, Portugal-Street, Lincoln's Inn, 1807. FIRST EDITION, pages vi, 135, with half-title, 8vo, recent wrapper : a very good copy. His first published work. Grant (1774!1848), chief justice of Calcutta, succeeded to the entailed estate of Rothiemurchus, on the death of his uncle, Patrick Grant, called the !White Laird,! in 1790. He studied law first at Edinburgh then at Lincoln's Inn. He sat in the parliament of 1812 for Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire, and in the two subsequent parliaments for Tavistock. In 1827 he went to India as puisne judge, first at Bombay then at Calcutta, where he was afterwards chief justice. He died at sea on his passage home. Ambitious and energetic, a man of the ancien regime and its Old Corruption, Grant was unreliable, evasive, and sometimes dishonest. The Times described him as !wayward, extravagant and, though not without shining parts, impracticable and unsuccessful in life! Blackwood's Magazine claimed he was !one of those brilliant men who are not born to succeed! (DNB).

Paris, 1807- 1808 Two volumes, quarto, with 32 folding engraved plates in volume I, with Atlas, imperial folio, containing 39 charts and maps (29 double folding); a remarkably fine, uncut copy bound in later, French, red straight-grained morocco-backed boards, blue marbled sides with vellum tips, small stamp on text titles: "Service des Vaisseaux de l'Empereur". A remarkably handsome set of this famous voyage account, completely uncut on thick paper and substantially larger in all dimensions than copies normally seen.

This is the official commander's account of the search for La Pérouse, published posthumously eight years after Labillardière's narrative of the same expedition. The twelve magnificent maps of Western Australia and Tasmania in the Atlas record much of these coasts accurately for the first time and are among the most significant ever made. Of prime importance to Tasmania, it was D'Entrecasteaux's explorations of 1792 and 1793 which focused attention on the Derwent River area (now Hobart) as a suitable place for settlement.

This is a very scarce voyage account, of great relevance to Australia and the Pacific; the Atlas volume is in its correct first edition form, with the charts all present in their original issues. Copies are sometimes found with later issues.

SEWARD (Anna, 1742-1809).
Autograph Letter Signed ('A. Seward')
      - to the Revd. Robert Fellowes, telling him that 'on the 1st. of this month I sent Mr. Crabbe's volume with an accompanying letter to you, by a Capt. Bullstrode.' She hopes that he received it. In a postscript, she seeks to forestall a possible, if unlikely, misunderstanding: 'You saw my young Cousin's marriage in the papers. Since I was so many years exclusively Miss Seward of Lichfield I am afraid that the omission of the Bride's christian name, Susanna, shou'd occasion some ridiculous mistakes. She has lived chiefly with me during the last 3 years.' 2 pages 8vo. autograph address-leaf ('Revd. Robt. Fellowes, No 17 Featherstone Buildings, Gray's Inn, London'), paper loss at corners where seal removed, Lichfield, November 10, [n.y., 1807 postmark], note in ink in an unidentified hand at end, reading: 'Miss Seward's handwriting, given me by Mr. Fellowes, July 14, 1812.' Anna Seward: 'the Swan of Lichfield'; poet, critic, & correspondent (her Letters publ. in 6 vols., 1811); in Lichfield, where she spent her entire adult life, she was at the centre of an important local literary circle; she supplied Boswell with much information about Dr. Johnson, Lichfield's most famous son (her grandfather had been Johnson's headmaster at Lichfield Grammar School); but, while admiring Johnson's literary ability, she objected to his perceived despotism & misanthropy, & her reservations about his character eventually led to an acrimonious public falling-out with Boswell. Robert Fellowes (1770-1847): philanthropist, who edited the Critical Review, 1804-11.
