(SHAKESPEARE). DOUCE FRANCIS.

| ILLUSTRATIONS OF SHAKESPEARE.
|
London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1807 222 x 140 mm. (8 3/4 x 5 1/2""). Each volume with half title. Two volumes. FIRST EDITION. VERY PLEASING CONTEMPORARY SPECKLED CALF covers bordered with gilt foliate rope roll spines gilt in compartments featuring scalloped roll at top and bottom small ring cornerpieces and floral lozenge centerpiece red and black morocco labels. An eclectic assortment of woodcut tailpieces music staves and illustrations (seven full-page) and seven engraved plates (one tinted and folding). Front pastedowns with engraved armorial bookplate and verso of title pages with the circular stamp of the honorable Marmaduke Dawnay. Title pages printed in red and black. One cover with a short narrow abrasion another cover with a small area of lost patina one opening with a dark shadow from a (now gone) satin ribbon another opening with a similar but faint shadow minor offsetting from illustrations the paper generally not of high quality (no doubt as in all copies) but still an attractive set the original appealing bindings lustrous and scarcely worn and the text showing few signs of use. These two volumes give information sometimes recondite and always intriguing about Shakespeare’s plays. For each work a number of lines are singled out for interpretation the commentary ranging from brief elucidations of meaning to lengthy disquisitions on for example Shakespeare’s sources for “The Merchant of Venice” or on dress in the Elizabethan age. A number of separate essays are included: “On the Anachronisms and Other Incongruities of Shakespeare” “On the Clowns and Fools of Shakespeare” “On the Collection of Popular Tales entitled Gesta Romanorum” and “On the English Morris Dance.” DNB describes this as an “interesting and valuable” book; it certainly contains a number of items very useful for enlivening the reading of Shakespeare. Douce (1757-1834) was a learned antiquary an active author on antiquarian subjects Keeper of Manuscripts in the British Museum and member of the Roxburghe Club. He built up a very substantial personal collection of books which he used as here in his writing and editing before bequeathing them to the Bodleian Library. He was perhaps a trifle eccentric as can be seen in the first clause of his will (as quoted by DNB): “ I give to Sir Anthony Carlisle £200 requesting him either to sever my head or extract the heart from my body so as to prevent any possibility of the return of vitality.” (DNB does not disclose the precise actions taken by Sir Anthony.)

Berlin, Maurer, 1802 und 1807. Erste illustrierte Ausgabe.

Bij A. Loosjes, Te Haarlem, 1807. 3 parts in 1 volume, in-8 (23 x 13.5 cm/9 x 5.3 inches), contemporary half-brown calf (wears on spine-ends and corners, teae on 7 and 3 cm (2.8 x 1.2 inches) on the upper and lower part of the first joint), flat spine decorated with three gilt fillets, gilt lettered beige morocco label. First edition. Very rare work which is the account of his journey to Paris by the Dutch writer Adriaan van der Willigen (Rotterdam 1766 - 1841). The first 21 pages include the half title, the foreword dated of 1806, the contents of the first part and the description of the cities passed by the author and visited before his arriving to Paris, namely Antwerp, Brussels, Valenciennes, Peronne and Roye. The 665 pages which follow are entirely devoted to Paris with many details and humour and from a physical, sociological and anthropological point of view. Van Willigen speak about the city in general and describe the streets, the inhabitants, the dwellings, the customs and habits, the various religions of the inhabitants, the government, the sciences and the arts, the embellishments and the improvements made to the city. The 187 last pages contain a description of the Pont-Neuf, the gardens of the Tuiileries and the Elysees, the Palais Royal, the Meteorology of the city, the fair of Saint-Cloud, the Prez St Gervais, Charenton, Alfort etc. and Montmorency. The work is full complete of the 10 plates which it must contains. In 1811, the work was confiscated by the French authorities and pulped. This last point explains the rarety of this work. The bookbinder did not find useful to intercalate the title pages and content of the 2 last parts. Some foxings. Rousseurs.

Printed By J. Addlard for the Proprietor and Sold By Champante and Withrow, London 1807 1130p., 28 illus. on leaves. A good to very good copy, the leather binding is somewhat worn. there is a bookplate on the front free endpaper of each volume and someone else's printed name with some obliteration of another's name on the first blank page following the free front endpaper of each volume. All of the illustrations are present and are in black-and-white. The bindings are sound and the pages are clean. In volume 1 the next page after page 70 is incorrectly numbered p. 61 and subsequent pagination is all "incorrect." However, the signatures are continuous and correct. There is nothing missing nor is anything misbound at this point. In other words, there are really 1140p. in this set, not 1130 as cited on the last page. In volume 2 page 1071 is misbound. It follows p. 1073-4, but should of course precede.

DANIELL, Thomas and William
|
|

|
London: Published as the Act Directs by Thos. Daniell R. A., Howland Street, Fitzroy Square, May 1807. Colour printed aquatint with hand-finishing by Thomas Daniell. Printed on wove Whatman paper dated 1805. 18 x 23 3/4 inches. 21 5/8 x 30 inches. A stunning view of the Shivagiri temple in Southern India, from Thomas and William Daniell's celebrated book "Oriental Scenery". The Daniells' Oriental Scenery is considered one of the finest illustrated works on India. Thomas Daniell and his nephew William spent nine years in India making studies, sketches and drawings of the scenery, architecture, and antiquities that graced the countryside. They then devoted a further thirteen years to publishing their remarkably accurate aquatints. In Britain, the impact was explosive. A cult of Indian architecture, landscaping and interior decoration arose, with the Royal Pavilion at Brighton as its centerpiece. The Daniells gave the English public their first accurate look at the exotic sub-continent. Their great achievement still lies in their ability to blend the picturesque with the real, resulting in images that capture the European taste for the sublime landscape, while still remaining faithful to their subjects. The Daniells brought the romance of the English landscape to the antiquities of India and provided England with an accurate vision of this wondrous country. Consisting of one hundred and forty-four views, published in six parts, the work was issued in seven stages: three sets of twenty-four plates titled Oriental Scenery with title dates of 1795, 1797, and 1801; twelve plates titled Antiquities of India dated 1799; twenty-four plates titled Hindoo Excavations dated 1803; twenty-four plates titled Views in Hindoostan dated 1807; and twelve further plates of Antiquities of India published without a title page in 1808. All plates were engraved by the Daniells and all are taken from their drawings save the twenty-four plates of Hindoo Excavations, which are after drawings by James Wales. The Daniells began their tour of Southern India on the 9th of April, 1791, and followed the route taken by the British Army when they defeated Sultan Tipu the previous year. They set off from Madras with a large retinue including two palanquins, two horses with grooms, a bullock cart, three pack-bullocks to carry tents and baggage, seven bearers to carry provisions, and two porters to carry the drawing tables. This image captures the small Balasubrahmanya temple in the Western Ghats of Southern India. The image is almost identical except that the Daniells have situated the shrine on top of a small hill rather than a low shelf of rock. They must have visited this remote temple during the monsoon season since the lake surrounding the shrine only occurs in the rainy season. Explaining that as the rehearsal had finished early he had gone to see Pleyel to try out some pianos. The firm of Pleyel was the most renowned French piano manufacturer of its day. It was founded by Ignace Pleyel in Paris in 1807, and by the 1830s claimed to be producing a thousand instruments a year. It was Ignace Pleyel's son Camille who gave Chopin his first public appearance at the 'Salon Pleyel', where Chopin was to give all his Paris recitals. Pleyel pianos are still made today.

A good copy of an early 19th-century edition of this important military manual written expressly for the use of American troops during the Revolutionary War, one of seven editions printed in 1807. The German-born Steuben, well-trained in the highly disciplined military system developed under Frederick the Great, served as inspector general of the Continental Army. In this capacity, he wrote his REGULATIONS FOR THE ORDER AND DISCIPLINE OF THE TROOPS OF THE UNITED STATES on orders from the Continental Congress. First published in 1779, the work became the standard text for the Continental Army and the United States Army into the early 19th century. Fifty editions, abridgements, extracts, and adaptations were printed before 1800. Steuben's contribution to American independence can not be underestimated. "He was unrivaled among the citizens of the new nation as an expert on military affairs. His introduction of European military concepts to the Continental army marks the beginning of a truly professional military tradition in the United States" - ANB. Bound, as issued with this edition of the REGULATIONS, is the New York 1805 pri.

| The Annual Register, or a View of the History, Politics, and Literature for the Year 1805

London: J. Wright. Good. 1807. First Edition. Hardcover. B0017RFTA6 . Iv, 1073, [18] pages, marbled boards, leather back-strip, back-strip frayed, hinges loose, ex-library with usual library markings otherwise very good. 1st edition. Volume 47 only. From the preface: The year, of which we are the historians has been marked by the most important events, the results of which must bear very materially upon the condition and views of a great portion of mankind. To the fresh aggressions of France, which raised a new coalition against her; to the different negociations (sic) which preceded the war on the continent; and to the details of the disastrous campaign, which terminated in the plains of Moravia, a more than ordinary care has been applied, and we trust the detail will well repay the curiosity of the reader. If to record the successes of the French upon the continent have proved a task equally irksome and disagreeable, it has been far otherwise when the exploits of the British navy, within the present year, have passed us in review. By them, the proud threatenings of our bitterest and most powerful enemy have been proved as vain as impotent; and we exulted in retracing the steps which led to the most splendid victory, ever obtained upon the ocean. The investigation of Indian affairs, the importance of which his every hour becoming more obvious, has employed our best exertions, and will, we are convinced, be found well worthy of perusal. Articles and State Papers include Dispatches from Lord Lake, containing an Account of the Siege of Bhurtpore; and from General Smith, communicating his Success over Ameer Khan, in Indostan, Interesting Account of Lieut. Yeo's gallant Action at Muros Bay, Further Particulars of the Battle of Trafalgar, Letter from Napoleon to the Landamman of Switzerland, Capitulation of Ulm to the Army of his Majesty the Emperor of France, American President's Speech - Washington, March 4th, An Account of the Life and Writings of Father Boscovich, Account of the double Boats built by the Direction of Sir Sydney Smith, Account of Submarine Mines in Cornwall, Account of Sir Philip Monckton, Some Transactions of the Civil Wars. Account of Books covers three books including Letters from Paraguay &c by John Constance Davie and Narrative of a Voyage to Brasil &c, by Thomas Lindley. ; 1073 pages .

(the two volumes of text) and [1807]-1811 (the two-part atlas AUGMENTED, 1807, 1816. Quarto, [iv], xvi, 496, [2] (errata) and xxxii, 472 pages plus a frontispiece and 2 folding tables (the text volumes) and [vi, pictorial title page, verso blank, and list of contents] pages plus 40 plates (numbered II to XLI-two of them are folding panoramas and 23 have original hand-colouring), 25 unnumbered plates (9 hand-coloured) and [vi, pictorial title page to the second part of the atlas, verso blank, and list of contents, last page blank] pages plus 14 maps, including 2 very large folding maps (the two-part atlas bound as one volume, with additional plates-see below). Early half calf and speckled papered boards with contrasting titling-labels on the spines; all corners recently (and expertly) renewed, all volumes rebacked, retaining the early backstrips (with a little loss, mainly to the ends); papered boards a little scuffed, with minor surface loss near the bottom corner of the front cover of the atlas; minimal foxing to a few leaves and plates; an excellent set. An interesting variant of Ferguson 449 and Wantrup 78a and 79a (the standard issue of his 'general reader's set'-basically without the uncommon technical volumes of hydrography). Wantrup (pages 366-67) makes easy work of a complex issue (although a few trifling errors crept into the title of 79a in the checklist). 'It is not generally known that the 1824 second edition of the "Partie Historique" contains some significant changes and additions to the first edition. The maps and charts of the first edition atlas, which bore the nationalistic and ambitious name of Terre Napoleon and included imperial French names for many parts of the coast, were omitted or greatly altered for the second edition atlas. This atlas also includes twenty-five new plates, many of which are coloured' (Wantrup). Accordingly, the atlas with this set would appear to be a hybrid of the two parts of the first edition plus the 25 plates new to the second edition. Each volume contains the pictorial bookplate ['Gang forward']...
