Unobtrusive perforated stamp of the Franklin Institute Library on titles of vols. 1-3 & on 2 or 3 other leaves, ink stamp of the library on title of vol. 1 & a few other leaves. Very good set. Paris: Baudouin, 1806-10; veuve Courcier, 1821. First Edition of the complete series establishing the metric system, from the library of one of its co-authors, François Arago who was responsible for completing the project, and who endured remarkable hardships to preserve the data. This is the most historically significant set of this famous work that has been on the market during the past 50 years! Printing and the Mind of Man 260. In 1788 the French Academy of Sciences, at the suggestion of Talleyrand, proposed the establishment of a new universal decimal system of measurement founded upon some "natural and invariable base" to replace Europe's diverse regional systems. This project was approved by the National Assembly in 1790 and a basic unit or "meter" of measurement proposed, which was to be one ten-millionth of the distance between the terrestrial pole and the Equator. In 1792 Méchain and Delambre were appointed to make the necessary geodetic measurements of the meridian passing through Dunkirk and Barcelona, from which the meter would be derived. The project was hampered by France's political revolution, by the death of Méchain in 1804, and by the tedious calculations involved in converting one system to another; it was not until 1810 that Delambre was able to complete the final volume of the Base du systeme metrique decimal. Méchain and Delambre had determined the length of the meter by taking measurements over a meridian arc of 10 degrees. After Mechain's death in 1804, the Bureau des Longitudes proposed that the meter's length be redetermined more accurately by extending measurement of the arc of the meridian south to the Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. François Arago and Jean Baptiste Biot were assigned to this task. Arago, who later became famous for his work in physics and astronomy, was twenty years old at the start of this project. In 1806 he and Biot journeyed to Spain and began triangulating the Spanish coast. Their work was disrupted by the political unrest that developed after Napoleon's invasion of Spain in 1807. Biot returned to Paris after they had determined the latitude of Formentera, the southernmost point to which they were to carry the survey. Arago continued the work until 1808, his purpose being to measure a meridian arc in order to determine the exact length of a meter. After Biot's departure, the political ferment caused by the entrance of the French into Spain extended to the Balearic Islands, and the population suspected Arago's movements and his lighting of fires on the top of mola de l'Esclop as the activities of a spy for the invading army. Their reaction was such that he was obliged to give himself up for imprisonment in the fortress of Bellver in June 1808. On July 28 Arago escaped from the island in a fishing-boat, and after an adventurous voyage he reached Algiers on August 3. From there he obtained a passage in a vessel bound for Marseille, but on 16 August, just as the vessel was nearing Marseille, it fell into the hands of a Spanish corsair. With the rest the crew, Arago was taken to Roses in Catalonia, and imprisoned first in a windmill, and afterwards in a fortress, until the town fell into the hands of the French, and the prisoners were transferred to Palamos. After three months' imprisonment, Arago and the others were released on the demand of the dey (ruler) of Algiers, and again set sail for Marseilles on the November 28, but when within sight of their port they were driven back by a northerly wind to Bougie on the coast of Africa. Transport to Algiers by sea from this place would have required a delay of three months. Arago, therefore, set out over land, on what had to be a strenuous journey, guided by a Muslim imam, and reached Algiers on Christmas Day. After six months in Algiers, on June 21, 1809, Arago set sail for Marseille, where he had to undergo a monotonous and inhospitable quarantine in the lazaretto before his difficulties were over, more than one year after he first was imprisoned. The first letter he received, while in the lazaretto, was from Alexander von Humboldt--the origin of a connection which, in Arago's words, lasted over forty years. In spite of the successive imprisonments, voyages, and other hardships he endured, Arago had succeeded in preserving the records of his survey; and his first act on his return home was to deposit them in the Bureau des Longitudes in Paris. As a reward for his heroic conduct in the cause of science, he was elected a member of the Académie des sciences at the remarkably early age of twenty-three, and before the close of 1809 he was chosen by the council of the Ecole Polytechnique to succeed Gaspard Monge in the chair of analytic geometry. At the same time he was named by the emperor one of the astronomers of the Obsérvatoire royale, which remained his residence till his death, and in this capacity he delivered his remarkably successful series of popular lectures on astronomy from 1812 to 1845. Most of his later scientific contributions were in physics, particularly optics and magnetism: he discovered the phenomena of rotary magnetism (the greater sensitivity for light in the periphery of the eye) and rotary polarization, invented the first polariscope, and performed important experiments supporting the undulatory theory of light. In his capacity as secretary of the Académie des Sciences, he championed the photographic process invented by Louis Daguerre, announcing its discovery to the Académie in 1839, and using his influence to obtain publicity and funding for its inventor. Arago's results, together with geodetic data obtained in France, England and Scotland, were published in the Recueil d'observations géodésiques, issued as a supplement to Méchain and Delambre's work 11 years after he carried the data back to France, in 1821. Political opposition to the new system of measurement may have contributed to the unusually long delay in publication. As a tribute to Arago's contribution, in 1994 the Arago Association and the city of Paris commissioned a Dutch conceptual artist, Jan Dibbets to create a memorial to Arago. Dibbets came up with the idea of setting 135 bronze medallions (although only 121 are documented in the official guide to the medallions) into the ground along the Paris Meridian between the northern and southern limits of Paris: a total distance of 9.2 kilometres/5.7 miles. Each medallion is 12 cm in diameter and marked with the name ARAGO plus N and S pointers. One of these was shown in the film, The Da Vinci Code. Dictionary of Scientific Biography under Biot. IV. Norman 1481. Alder, The Measure of the World (2003).

Über die Ladronen oder Marien Insel Gruppe in dem Nördlichen Stillen Meere. [On the Ladrones, or Mariana Island Group in the Northern Pacific Ocean.]
|
Publisher: Industrie-Comptoirs 1806 8vo. This is two complete consecutive issues of the 'Geographische Ephemeriden', 45 pages of which pertain to the above mentioned title, as published in two parts. Text is in German. A scarce primary resource. Attractively bound together booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. Contained in these issues is a two-part description of the Marianas (Mariann), covering geography, fauna, flora, indigenous people and their indutsry, compiled from the accounts of several explorers until the year 1800. Of particular interest is a discussion of the naming of the Marianas. A list of introduced animal species is also given, highlighting the importation of deer from the Philippines and import of horses, donkeys and mules from the Americas. Plant species are listed with an emphasis on edible plants and the introduction of agricultural industries. Remarks on population indicates that the indigenous Chamorro poeple may once have numbered 50,000 though at the author's time comprised only 1,500 people living on Guam, Rota and Saipan combined. Features a thorough description of Guam and succinct sketch of other islands. The second part of the paper deals predominantly with the history of discovery, with mention of the first European discoverer of the islands, Ferdinand Magellan, and the history of the Spanish administration and missionisation. These are the original pages printed in 1806, and NOT a reprint. This narrative is from a rare multi-volume geographical and scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy. Adam Christian Gaspari and Franz Xaver von Zach were editors of this important scientific journal.

Unrecorded Senate slip bill printing of the bill that would become law in April, 1806, intending to solve the ongoing land grant conflict between Tennessee and North Carolina. In the first years of the 19th century, Tennessee and North Carolina, who had originally held claim to Tennessee's lands, were issuing overlapping grants of "vacant" lands, creating conflicts with each other, the local Cherokees and Chickasaws, and the federal government. The present bill fixes the boundaries of the public lands, establishing the Congressional Reservation, and naming the lands available for North Carolina to grant to its Revolutionary War veterans and designating areas for Tennessee townships and university and school lands. This is a slip bill printing, done for the use of members on the floor of the Senate while the bill is under consideration, and triple spaced to allow room for changes and annotations. No record of this bill has been found in Shaw & Shoemaker, Sabin, or OCLC; slip bills were usually printed in very small numbers and discarded quickly. DAH IV, pp.144-45; V, pp.242-43.

TACHIBANA, Morikuni.
EHON NOYAMA GUSA: PICTURE BOOK OF MOUNTAIN & FIELD PLANTS. Alternate Japanese Title: EHON YAZAN SOH.
|
AN EARLY CATALOGUE OF JAPAN'S WILD MOUNTAIN PLANTS & FLOWERS Osaka 1806, Yanagiwara. Stitched brown/black stiff wrs., 5 vol. set, very good, profuselly illustrated, woodblock prin- ted on hand-made Masa paper, blue cloth folding Chitsu case, ivory pegs,26+19+23+17+20 double folded leaves [210p] total. This is a famous work, by the celebrated botanical artist Tachibana Morikuni [ca. 1670?-1748]. This superb work has often been confused with the author's son, Tachibana Yasuku- ni and his book due to its similar format and content, with the same title. The fact that Morikuni's book was also re- published posthumously as late as 1760 adds to the biblio- graphic confusion. This work is one of Japanese botany's most interesting & charming works of old times. See H. Bart- lett & H. Shohara: JAPANESE BOTANY DURING THE PERIOD OF WOOD BLOCK PRINTING pages 126-7, & a full page illustration, fig. 14 for an example. Each of the multitude of very good illus- trations show 190 different varieties of wild flowers & na- tive plants, each named & labeled in shown in natural situ. A virtual dictionary of Japanese mountain plants. One of the more valuable reference points of this book is that is also a major pharmacopoeia & cross reference for other Japanese medical books, which refer to many of these plants, for the making of prescriptions, this being an illustrated diction- ary of those [& all other plants] that graphically show just what they looked like. Books of this subject nature, which show and name exceptionally large amounts of plants must be considered as historic botanical treasure. They record fait- hfully what the plant looked like from hundreds of years ago in their various seasons. Kenji Toda in his DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF THE JAPANESE & CHINESE ILLUSTRATED BOOKS IN THE RYERSON LIBRARY OF THE A.I.C. cites this book on p.319 but gives the more common reading of the title as: EHON NOYAMA GUSA, with a secondary attribution to the artist [author] as Hokkyoo Yasukuni [same author but using his "studio" name. But mistakenly cites the author/artist as Tachibana Yasukuni, the son. His collation matches exactly with our copy, which was first published in 1755, thus, this is the 1806 reprint of that edition and is so noted in the colophon at the back of vol.5. See also: E. Merrill & E. Walker: A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF EASTERN ASIATIC BOTANY, p.561 for their ent- ry which attributes this work to Yasukuni. A marvelous bot- anical ! . viii, 175 pp. including engr. title. Landwehr, Colour Plates 354 (6 copies); Saakes 4 (1806), p. 200; Picarta (7 copies). An illustrated literary celebration of the natural and man-made beauty of South Holland, in the form of an excursion by a group of young friends (men and women), beginning at the Mediaeval fortress in Leiden, reaching its high point at the 22 July 1805 ceremony in Katwijk, where they witnessed the laying of the first stone for the sluice for the new Katwijk canal, and ending at the seventeenth-century Marepoort city gate back in Leiden. En route they admire the sights of Voorschoten, Voorburg, The Hague (the "Haagse Bos" woods), the "Huis ten D(e)ijl" inn, Valkenburg, Rijnsburg, Oegstgeest, Katwijk (including the site of the sunken Brittenburg Roman ruins that had not been seen since 1752), Noordwijk (including the rose garden and herb garden), Voorhout and Warmond. The conversation that forms the main text is interspersed with poems that they recite to each other. The rose on the title-page represents the garden in Noordwijk, while the bouquet of wildflowers (6 sorts, all named on page 24) was picked by the travellers. The folding plate of the sluice at Katwijk was drawn from life and engraved by Franciscus Andreas Milatz (1764-1808), while the map of the canal was engraveed by Daniel Veelwaard (1776-1851).The book, dated 1805 on the title-page and appearing in Saakes in 1806, is especially interesting for the paper of the engraved title-page and illustration plates. Jan Aggesz. Kool (1742-1816) famously produced the first Dutch wove paper, having learned the secrets of its manufacture in England. The 9 October 1807 contract in which he agreed to share the secret with the other papermakers in the Zaan region of North Holland mentions various kinds of equipment that he "has already made or is still to be made," so one may suppose that he had already produced a few samples, though apparently not on a large scale. Voorn, was unable to find an example earlier than 1811, though he searched the archives of the Zaan region (see Papiermolens in de Provincie Noord-Holland , pp. 59-60 & 333). The present illustration plates therefore show by far the earliest example known, made already before the 1807 contract. The 8vo title-page and oblong 4to folding view show only the first half of the watermark ("J K[ool]", apparently centred along at least one long edge of the sheet, which was probably of Mediaan size, about 44 x 57 cm) and the 8vo bouquet plate does not show the watermark, but there is no doubt all three came from Kool's mill, "De Bonsem" at Koog aan Zaan, about 10 or 15 kilometers from Haarlem, where Loosjes published the book.In very good condition and nearly untrimmed, with most deckles and point holes still present, with only a marginal tear repared at the fold of the view and a faint marginal water stain in a few text leaves. The binding is slightly rubbed but also very good. An illustrated literary tribute to South Holland and the earliest known example of Dutch wove paper..

Third edition, the first to be published in 2 volumes and the first published after the Great Quarto edition of 1803, of one of the most important and influential books in the history of economic thought. The third edition contained numerous revisions among which a text entitled A Reply to the Chief Objections which have been urged against the Essay on the Principle of Population which was also published separately so that it might be bound with earlier ones.-In fine condition lists for over 9,000, this is a set with worn joints needing re hinging and some repair to the spines, but suitable for re hinging or re casing with full nice calf boards and handsome spines, I figure the cost of restoration at 500 and well worth it. He became a well-known painter of birds, flowers and landscapes in Edo toward the close of the 18th century. Among his books containing illustrations by him were the YOMO-NO HARU, HENSHI GAFU and two variants to the current title we offer: GENTAI SENSEI GAFU signed Henyei in 5 volumes 1806 with black & white art work. Gentai was one of Tani Bucho's teachers. * Gentai was survived by a son, Watanabe Sekisui [1775-1833] who was also known as Hakuga, again an artist. Saint-Memin, Charles B.J.F. de:
[FRAMED PROFILE PORTRAIT ENGRAVINGS OF JOHN DAVENPORT AND HENRY ROGERS]
|
[Washington, D.C. 1806].. Two engravings, matted and framed under glass. Images are circular, with a diameter of approximately 2 1/4 inches. Matting overleaf black with gold trim around each image. Wood frame, 6 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches. Engravings in fine condition. A framed pair of profile portrait engravings by the celebrated French-American portraitist, Charles B.J.F. de Saint-Memin. The subjects, John Davenport and Henry Rogers, both sat for Saint-Memin in Washington in 1806. Davenport was educated at Yale and practiced law in Connecticut before being elected to the Sixth and to the eight succeeding Congresses (1799-1817). In his 1862 catalogue of Saint-Memin's portraits, Elias Dexter identifies the second subject only as Henry Rogers from Delaware. Charles Balthazar Julien Fevret de Saint- Memin was a young, aristocratic military officer when he fled France during the Revolution in 1790. In 1793 he arrived in New York with his father and soon began pursuing a career in the arts. Applying early training he had received in drawing and an eye for precision, Saint-Memin quickly taught himself the techniques of engraving and printing, and began producing plans and landscapes of New York. In 1796 he co- founded a business creating profile portraits with the aid of a physiognotrace, a recently invented drafting device that allowed portraitists to capture their sitters' profiles with extreme accuracy. After tracing a subject's profile with the physiognotrace, Saint-Memin would complete a portrait in chalk, reduce and copy it to a copper plate using a pantograph, and finally engrave the plate and produce a series of prints. Each patron would receive the original drawing, the plate, and, typically, a dozen engravings. Saint- Memin's business was wildly successful, and for fourteen years it sustained him as he traveled through the eastern U.S. capturing the likenesses of many leading American figures of the day. Ellen G. Miles' extensive work on Saint-Memin, published by the National Portrait Gallery, describes every aspect of his career and lists nearly a thousand of his known portraits. The present pair of Saint-Memin portraits comes from the noted collection of Richard Townley Haines Halsey. Halsey, a Princeton graduate and stockbroker by trade, was an intense Americanist. He believed that by promoting the history of American craftsmanship, modern American industry would be better protected against the intrusion of foreign-made goods. Halsey began collecting in the 1890s and continued through the 1920s. His mission to advance modern scholarship on American decorative arts reached its zenith in 1924 with the opening of the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Halsey gave liberally of his expertise and his money to the project, the successful completion of which cemented his reputation as America's leading authority on the subject. Afterwards, he pioneered a course at St. John's College in Maryland that explored the marriage between American arts and crafts, and American history which became the model for a similar course taught by John Marshall Phillips at Yale University. Halsey ended his professional career as a research assistant with the Franklin Papers at Yale University. Miles, SAINT-MEMIN (Washington, 1994) 223, 711.

Shaw & Shoemaker 10562 . The author (1773-1849) was born in Bethlehem, Conn., and worked as a farmer and cobbler most of his life, writing these poems under unusually straitened circumstances. These three poems -- Oo!The Shade of Plato,Oo! Oo!Knight and Quack,Oo! and Oo!The Subtlety of FoxesOo! -- appeared the previous year. LYSONS, Daniel, and Samuel LYSONS
Magna Britannia: being a concise topographical account of the several counties of Great Britain
|
- London: Strahan & Preston for T. Cadell & W. Davies, 1806-1822. 6 volumes in ten, large quarto. (12 5/8 x 9 3/4 inches). 9 engraved folding or double page maps, hand-coloured in outline, 267 plates, some folding or double-page. Extra-illustrated with 1392 original watercolours, drawings or prints (comprising 30 original watercolours or drawings, 7 maps, 1355 prints). (Some plates shaved, others cut-down and mounted to size). Mid-19th century red morocco by J. Wright, covers with wide elaborate gilt border built up from fillets, and various decorative rolls, spines in six compartments with raised bands, olive morocco lettering-pieces in the second and third compartments, the others with elaborate overall repeat decoration made up from numerous small tools, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges. A spectacular pictorial record of the architecture and scenery of nine British counties, assembled in the late 1840s by C.D. Halford and his family: a very fine set of the large paper issue profusely extra-illustrated, and in a sumptuous binding by one of the best London binders of the time. The thirty pieces of original artwork, together with the bookplates, are an indicator that this was a family project: half of them are signed or initialled by various members of the Halford family - including Eleanor and Fanny Holford (probably Charles Douglas Halford's daughters). The family evidently spent time (and perhaps had family in) the West Country as 19 are of subjects in Devon, including Clovelly, Porlock, Lympstone, Tiverton, and Torbay. The subjects include churches, great houses and town/village scenes. The extra prints include a large proportion of views, including hand-coloured aquatints extracted from Ackermann'sCambridge; hand-coloured plates of Cornwall by Thomas Rowlandson; a fine series of coloured aquatint views of the Lake District, and others. The uncoloured views are mostly 19th-century, including the text and plates of J. Britton History and Antiquities of the Cathedral Church of Exeter, and works by Thomas Fisher of Bedfordshire; views by William Byrne, Joseph Farrington and others from Britannia Depicta; views of Cambridgeshire by John Sell Cotman; George Cuitt's etchings of Chester, William Spreat's lithographs of Devon Churches. Earlier series include a number from Richard Polwhele of Devon, and a selection from Samuel and Nathaniel Buck's Antiquities. 1774. The Lysons intention was to describe and picture every county in alphabetical order, but the project foundered before reaching the end of the letter 'D'. The set, therefore, covers the following counties: Bedfordshire. [Magna Britannia vol.I part 1]. 1806; Berkshire. [Magna Britannia vol.I part 2]. 1813; Buckinghamshire. [Magna Britannia vol.I part 3]. 1813; Cambridgeshire. [Magna Britannia vol.II part 1]. 1808; Cheshire. [Magna Britannia vol II part 2]. 1810; Cornwall. [Magna Britannia vol.III]. 1814; Cumberland. [Magna Britannia vol.IV]. 1816; Derbyshire. [Magna Britannia vol.V]. 1817; Devonshire. [Magna Britannia vol.VI]. 1822. 2 vols. The work was issued in both quarto and large quarto form - according to Lowndes the large paper issue sold originally for £46 10s, as opposed to the regular issue at £27 4s. Lowndes II, p.1424. Heiliges Römisches Reich Deutscher Nation 962 bis 1806.
|

QUAKERS, SOCIETY OF FRIENDS
A COLLECTION OF THE EPISTLES FROM THE YEARLY MEETING OF FRIENDS IN LONDON TO THE QUARTERLY AND MONTHLY MEETINGS IN GREAT-BRITAIN, IRELAND AND ELSEWHERE, FROM 1675 TO 1805; BEING FROM THE FIRST ESTABLISHMENT OF THAT MEETING TO PRESENT TIME
|
Cole and Hewes, Baltimore 1806 - An excellent record or "Epistle" from the early Quaker movement, presented at their 'quarterly' and 'monthly' meetings. An important original recording of the 'Society of Friends' struggles, triumphs, growth and developments during the 'Reformation' period. "Collectively they will be found more clear and full exposition of the 'principles' and various 'testimonies' of Friends, than, perhaps any other work extant; as well as full account of the rise and establishment of the different branches of their church discipline and the reasons which have led to the adoption of the several parts thereof". As religious persecution in England continued the Society of Friends continued to spread and support there fellowship. The notes of the Quarterly and Annual Meetings contained spiritual encouragement, Scripture, news of imprisoned, and released people; "Epistle VII - 1684: two letters sent from Friends of Dantzick, dated the 20th of the Second Month 1684, were read; signifying their strait confinement; being prisoners in the house of correction there, under extreme hard usage and cruelty; forced to lie upon straw, in this late extreme winter. They have been shackled or chained together, two, by two, by their hands; and by the magistrates (the senate of that place) sentenced to be kept and fed with bread and water only for their sustenance." Various names of Quaker clerks of the meetings: Ellis Hookes, Benjamin Bealing, John Fothergill, Thomas Beaven, Joseph Birkbeck, and others. This book has quite a bit of interesting old 'marginalia' to the first 160 pages; rear paste-down lists four deaths during the early 19th century, previous owners name above title. Full calf, green leather title panel with gilt title to spine. Leather well rubbed, two small chips to joint of spine end. End papers foxed, mild toning of text. Very bright font, text clean, solid in covers. Very nice condition. In protective archival film. Index, Appendix, 412 pp. 8 vo. Please click for image. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Middleton and Dobbs Controversy - Scarce Letters
[Contribution to the History of Christopher Middleton's Voyage to the North West Passage.]
|
Publisher: Industrie-Comptoirs 1806 8vo. 8 pages. Text is in German. A scarce resource. This is a complete monthly issue, containing the above mentioned account. Attractively bound booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. A scarce publication comprising two letters written by Christopher Middleton while at his quarters at Churchill, on the shore of Hudson Bay, dated June 1741 and September 1741 respectively, illuminating details of the long-standing disagreement between Middleton and Dobbs. Christopher Middleton (late 1600s-1770), English naval officer and navigator, was appointed on 5 March 1741 to the command of the Royal Navy's sloop 'Furnace'. He was encouraged by the theories of Arthur Dobbs who was convinced that tide differences pointed to the Passage's entry being near Wager Bay. In May 1741 he left England in the Furnace, accompanied by a smaller vessel, the purchased pink HMS Discovery under the command of Commander William Moor, and sailed to North America in search of a Northwest Passage to the East Indies. He spent the winter at the entrance of the Churchill River in Hudson Bay, then proceeded as far north as Repulse Bay, but was prevented by extreme ice conditions from going any further. Middleton returned to England in 1742, where he was presented with the Copley Medal and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society to whom he presented a paper on "The extraordinary degrees and surprising effects of Cold in Hudson's Bay". Dobbs however accused Middleton of falsification, and the two engaged in a pamphlet controversy for years. In 1744 Dobbs produced 'An Account of the Countries Adjoining to Hudson’s Bay,' which extolled the virtues of the region and criticized the HBC for its stewardship of it.

Tenon, M. [Jacques Rene]
|
Chez madame la veuve NYON, Paris 1806 - xxiv, 496 with 7 plates. This book contains the first adequate description of Tenon's Capsule - a structure that Tenon did not discover but did sufficient descriptive and investigative work to warrant the resulting recognition. It contains "A collection of twenty-five memoirs by a celebrated Parisian anatomist, surgeon, and ophthalmologist [Tenon]. The first eleven essays deal with ophthalmological subjects and include his "Observations anatomiques sur quelques parties de l'oeil et des paupieres" (p. [193]-207) which presents his famous description of the fibrous capsule and the interfascial space of the orbit. Known to anatomists since Galen as the 'tunica adnata,' details of the fascia surrounding the eyeball were first discovered and adequately described by Tenon in this work. His investigations were largely forgotten until the strabismus operation, introduced by Dieffenbach (110) and Bonnet (54) and Dalrymple (90), revived anatomical investigations of the orbit. Tenon's observations and descriptions are eponymously recognized in "Tenon's capsule" and "Tenon's space." It is interesting to note that Tenon was an octogenarian when his major ophthalmological writings were published." (Becker Collection 373) Albert et al (Sourcebook of Ophthalmology) notes further that the article on Tenon's capsule was originally read before the Institute de France (successor to the Academie des Sciences) in 1805. ½ leather (calf over marbled boards). Spine with simple gold ruling and title lettering. Removed label at base of spine, and gold lettered "41328" at head of spine as well as written on title page. An exlibrary copy, with top 1/3 of half title page excised, leaving lettering "Memoires sur l'Anatomie" (complete?). Library stamp (?) on title page. Although marked Tome Premier, this was the only volume published. 7 folding plates in rear, beautifully illustrated (1 in color). One plate has 2 separations at one fold. Goed. V 419, 12. Stephan 15. Borst 1042.
