SAINT-LAMBERT (Jean Francois de);
Bel exemplaire. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Edwards, Bryan (1743-1800)
The History, Civil and Commercial of the British Colonies in the West Indies
|
Printied for John Stockdale, London 1798 - 2 volumes: liv+494 pages with 3 plates, including frontispiece, 10 maps of which 3 are large fold out maps, tables and appendix; 520 pages plus 1 page errata bound in at back with 4 pages including frontispiece, tables and appendix. Quarto (10 3/4" x 8 1/2") bound in full leather with marbled boards and gilt lettering to spine. 2d edition. Bryan Edwards, was an English politician and historian born in Westbury, Wiltshire. Edwards supported the slave trade, and was described by abolitionist William Wilberforce as a powerful opponent. Edwards' father died in 1756, and his maintenance and education were undertaken by his maternal uncle, Zachary Bayly, a wealthy merchant in Jamaica. About 1759 Edwards joined his uncle there and Bayly engaged a private tutor to complete the boy's education. When Bayly died Edwards inherited his wealth, and in 1773 also succeeded to the estate of another Jamaica resident named Efume. Edwards soon became a leading member of the colonial assembly of Jamaica, but in a few years returned to England. In 1782 he tried and failed to secure a seat in parliament as member for Chichester. He was in Jamaica again from 1787 to 1792. He then settled in England as a West India merchant, making another futile attempt to enter parliament in 1795, this time standing in Southampton. In 1796, however, he became member of parliament for Grampound, a notoriously corrupt Cornish borough. Edwards retained this seat until his death at Southampton in July 1800. He left an only son, Hume, by his wife, Martha, daughter of Thomas Phipps of Westbury. Description: Titles age darkened, recased with original spine laid on, new period labels, book plates of Newton Carles Ogle and Edward Chaloner Ogle on front paste downs else a very good set. [UTAMARO, Kitagawa.]
UTAMARO MANUSCRIPT SHUNGA HAND SCROLL.
|
A STUNNING UTAMARO EROTIC MANUSCRIPT HAND-SCROLL Japan n.d. ca. 1798. A hand-scroll, exceptionallyclean and bright, 30 x 340 cm. long in all, 6 fine hand drawn & color- ed views, each 37 x 27 cm. preliminary portion protected by a 29 cm. long striped cloth covers, white bone ends. R A R E Utamaro [1754-1806] was influenced by Kitao Masanogu & Torii Kiyonaga. A famous painter and illustrator, who was impriso- ned in 1804 for violating the Shogunate's ban on the publis- hing of erotic prints. He was one of the first Japanese artists to be known in Europe and had considerable influence on Western artists like Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1788 two of his most important works appeared: MUSHI ERABI [INSECT BOOK] and his erotic classic: UTA MAKURA [PILLOW OF POEMS]. This hand scroll is an elegant work showing the grace and refinement of Japanese women, even in erotic art. While most other Jap- anese erotic works depict women as common harlots, Utamaro was known for his distinctive, attractive and elegant style of portraying features generally small, and the figures tall and graceful in all of his painting & prints. See L. Roberts DICTIONARY OF JAPANESE ARTISTS, p.193 for other details. The hand-scroll consists of suite six erotic paintings, each is about 37 x 26.5 cm., and mounted on a stiff white paper bac- king, with nice carved bone ends, internal gilt paper at the beginning, and a silk tie. The exterior beginning portion is done with a striped cloth, the whole mounting is relatively recent, probably done in the 1960's, is quite clean and with out flaw. Each painting is done in black Sumi brush outline, with light pink or red pastel colors for accent on the lips, tongue, genitals & flowing inner Kimono. As usual this is not signed, but is clearly Utamaro's style, thus the title is shown with his name. Surely done by a fine & steady hand, the work reflects the details and skill of Utamaro. It must be done before 1804, the date he was imprisoned for allowing an erotic triptych to be published. We have ruled out the work being painted by his disciple, Utamaro II, who was in Roberts words: "a minor figure, feebly imitating the great master" see p.193, as this work is a strong and solid set of paintings. Instructions to Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, John Marshall and Elbridge Gerry, Envoys Extraordinary and Ministers Plenipotentiary to the French republic, referred to in the Message of the President of the United States of the third instant
|
Philadelphia:: Pr. by Way & Groff,, 1798.. Sewn, edges untrimmed, now in a Mylar folder. Title-page with a little bug-spotting, edges darkened, aterstained throughout.. 8vo. 20 pp. . As Europe was engulfed in war, the American electorate became deeply divided over the issue of whether to side with their ally in their war of independence or with Great Britain in their effort to prevent French domination over the continent. By 1795, however, Franco-American relations had become severely strained, owing primarily to Jay's Treaty which failed to protect America's trading agreements with France. The treaty, together with the subsequent election of John Adams as President of the United States (the French minister to the U. S. had openly supported Jefferson), was viewed by the Directory with hostility. In response, the French conducted a maritime war against the United States, with privateers seizing hundreds of vessels flying the American flag. The Directory also refused to accept Charles Pinckney as James Monroe's replacement as foreign minister to France (Monroe had opposed Jay's Treaty), essentially breaking off all diplomatic ties. Promising "a fresh attempt at negotiation" in his message to Congress of 16 May 1797, John Adams appointed John Marshall and Elbridge Gerry to join Pinckney as part of a peace commission charged with negotiating a new treaty with France. Unfortunately for the commissioners, Secretary of State Thomas Pickering's instructions asked for much and gave away little, thus giving them a weak hand with which to bargain. In addition, they were later approached by three agents of the French foreign minister Talleyrand, identified in their dispatches as X, Y, and Z, who demanded a bribe as a precondition to negotiation. Pinckney refused and news of the XYZ Affair, released to Congress by the President on 3 April 1797, led the more extreme Federalists to press for an immediate declaration of war.#11; This is Secretary of State Thomas Pickering's instructions, dated July 15, 1797, to the peace commission to France.

Standrede am Grabe der Madame Schuwitz [und ihr Testament]. Ein Neujahrsgeschenk für Incroyables.
|
Rastadt [d.i. (S. 44). Da hieß es also: erzittere, (männliches) Berlin! Einband leicht fleckig, Vorsatz mit Signaturschild. Altersbedingt leicht gedunkelt und etwas knittrig, sonst innen gutes Exemplar. Goed. Hayn-Got. I, 316. Zu Schuwitz s. Bilderlex.
Holzmann/Bohatta I, 10607 und VII, 2591. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Berlin, 1798. Twenty linen backed sheets, very good or better, each with early hand color and each segment individuall labelled (includes an index sheet and 9a and b). Very uncommon set, with above date approximate. This map is apparently of some significance, as the KVK catalogue online indicates a facsimile production was done based on an 1802 version, and published in 1981 by Kiepert. Each of the images here is about 6.75x9inches (17x23cm). This includes a colorful custom case (5x8 inches) in very good condition, with the label reading "Prussian States. Coll. Gordon. Private). Sotzmann was made geographer of the Berlin Academy of Sciences in 1786, then eventually the head of the military section. He was responsible for a proliferation of late 18th century regional manuscript maps, as this information became less of a state security concern after the death of Frederic II (Frederic the Great). Other contemporary cartographers of the time included Schirmeister, Oesfeld, and Schultze. This map has enormous detail, and is in exceptionally nice condition..

1. BENJAMIN STODDERT
Benjamin Stoddert, the First Secretary of the Navy, Writes to John Nicholson, Robert Morris's Business Partner;/i;
|
Stoddert was the first Secretary of the Navy. He fought in the Revolution, and later became a merchant. In May 1798, President Adams appointed him Secretary of the Navy. In his first two years, Stoddert acquired fifty ships to fight the undeclared naval war with France. After the end of fighting with France, he acquired for the Navy thirteen frigates and twelve 74 gun boats. He was also instrumental in starting the Marine Corps. He resigned in April 1801. P BJOHN NICHOLSON/B. Nicholson was a Revolutionary-era Pennsylvania state official. He partnered with Robert Morris in western land speculation that bankrupted both. He was sent to debtor's prison in 1800 and died there shortly thereafter. P ALS. 1pg. 8" x 9 !!". 7 Jany 97. No place. An autograph letter signed I"BBen Stoddert/B"/I to John Nicholson. Stoddert wrote I"I am sorry to refuse your request but I must decline complying with it... BBen Stoddert/B Mr. /I[Uriah] IForrest to whom I have spoken says he cannot engage in this business."/I Nicholson docketed the letter. Stoddert, after the American Revolution, established Forrest, Stoddert and Murdock, an international trading firm. Much like Nicholson, Stoddert engaged in western land speculation but did not fail as spectacularly as Nicholson. This letter may very well have been a reply to an invitation from Nicholson to buy western lands. The letter has a seal tear on the first page and the last words are a bit light, but it is in fine condition

Wallace, Thomas:
AN ESSAY ON THE MANUFACTURES OF IRELAND: IN WHICH IS CONSIDERED, TO WHATMANUFACTURES HER NATURAL ADVANTAGES ARE BEST SUITED; AND WHAT ARE THE BESTMEANS OF IMPROVING SUCH MANUFACTURES.
|
Dublin: Printed by Campbell and Shea..., 1798. "xix" [ie. xviii],[errata leaf],[xix]-xx,340pp. Octavo. Recent cloth and boards, gilt label, many lower edges untrimmed. Faint old stamps of a defunct mercantile library, some occasional isolated spots, modest tanning, last two leaves neatly reinforced at gutter, old mends to blank lower margins of two other leaves, old natural paper flaw in fore-margin of one leaf, with no loss of text; still, a good, solid copy. First edition of what is, evidently, the author's only substantial publication, dedicated to Francis, Earl of Moira. Wallace, "of the King's Inn, Dublin," submitted this essay to the competition held by the Royal Irish Academy as a consequence of the Cunningham bequest, and it was one of two finalists, along with Preston's better known essay. Wallace includes a long, occasionally caustic, preface detailing substantial delays in making the award and what he perceived as irregularities in the judging process, most notably the fact that Preston sat on the committee that selected the winner. Not in Bradshaw, Kress (or Supplement). The NUC locates five copies. GOLDSMITHS 17276. BLACK 2035.

|
For references on Utamaro, or other illustrated erotic Japanese works, please request our current list. English Text: In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, German-speaking scholars played a decisive role in founding and shaping the study of medieval and early modern English language and culture. During this process, aesthetic and literary enthusiasms were gradually replaced, first by broadly comparative and then by increasingly narrow scientistic practices, all confusingly subsumed under the term 'philology'. Towards 1871, German and Austrian Anglicists were successful at imposing-- for about 30 years -- many of their philological discoursive practices on their English-speaking counterparts by focusing on strict textual criticism, chronology, historical linguistics, prosody, and literary history. After World War I, these philological practices were rejected in the U.K. and the United States because they were 'Made in Germany', but have remained essential features of German medieval scholarship until the present day. This book offers a case study of these foundational developments by investigating the reception of Geoffrey Chaucer by eminent scholars such as V.A. Huber, W. Hertzberg, B. ten Brink, J. Zupitza, E. Fluegel, and J. Koch. The narrative of their nationalist, scientist, and self-fashioning efforts is complemented by a comprehensive annotated bibliography of German Chaucer criticism between 1793 and 1948.

Jomini, Roger & Gladys
Jomini 1779-1869 [Signed]
|
Self-Published. - Text in French. Inscribed and signed by author Roger Jomini. This is the story of a Swiss general, advisor to two French emperors, Napoleon the 1st and Napoleon III, and three czars, Alexander 1, Nicolas I, and Alexander II. In several instances, he rescued these rulers from desperate situations. He created the discipline of military prospective and was the paramount authority in this field for over a century, first in Europe and later in the United States. Jomini crisscrossed Europe, in wartime during sixteen campaigns and thirty battles, from Portugal to the Ural; then in peacetime, as an humanist trying to alleviate the evils of war. His longevity coupled with his exceptional capacity for work allowed him to be a military man, a banker, an aesthete, a secret agent, the friend of Musiclans and writers. He was the object of jealousy and intrigue, and was frequently bypassed for honors and recognition - Not only because he was a foreigner, but because of his unyielding personality and his legendary outspokenness, which spared no one, not even the monarchs. Roger and Gladys Jomini are members of numerous international historical Societies, and have authored several publications which received high distinctions: Bankers from Babylon to Wall Street", "Sister Republics: the USA, Switzerland and their Constitutions", "Interaction of Jomini, Clausewitz and Mahan on American Strategic Thinking" and "1798 - late of Invasion" 288 pages. Stubbs, George (1724-1806).
The Anatomy of the Horse. Including: a Particular Description of the Bones, Cartilages, Muscles, Fascias, Ligaments, Nerves, Arteries, Veins and Glands. in 18 Tables All Done From Nature
|
London: J. Purser for the author, 1766 [watermarked 1798]. Oblong broadsheet (17 4/8 x 22 4/8 inches). 24 etched plates by and after Stubbs, including 6 key plates (title-page, "To the Reader", and last page of text laid-down on archival paper and with lower corners renewed, first plate with minor marginal repairs and lower corner renewed not affecting the image, one or two other expert repairs to marginal tears). Half modern calf antique over contemporary marbled paper boards. "REVOLUTIONISED MEN'S UNDERSTANDING OF THE NATURAL WORLD" (Lennox-Boyd). First edition, later issue, with all text leaves printed on laid paper and all plates on wove paper watermarked 1798. Lennox-Boyd reports in his celebrated biography "Stubbs" that "Between 1756 and 1759, Stubbs lived...in a farmhouse at Horkstow in Lincolnshire...During this time he undertook the work that was to serve as the basis of 'The Anatomy of the Horse', dissecting 'a great number of horses' and making a series of fine detailed drawings, forty-two of which survive in the library of the Royal Academy. Stubbs's subsequent approaches to engravers, including Charles Grignion, the most experienced anatomical interpreter of the period, were unsuccessful however, since, as Humphry noted, 'the engravers...had been unaccustomed to such studies, and, not understanding them, were fearful of being bewildered and therefore they wished to decline undertaking the commission. This compell'd our artist to engage to engrave the whole of his designs himself?' This task occupied Stubbs for the next six years...The preparation of 'The Anatomy of the Horse' marked a decisive stage in his career. Not only did preparation of the eighteen intricate plates, each with an accompanying key, offer ample opportunity for him to perfect his previously somewhat rudimentary engraving techniques, but, as he later maintained, 'The Anatomy of the Horse' caused him henceforth to be regarded primarily as an animal painter, whereas his provincial reputation had been based on portraits.
