Fierro 1105. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

COBBETT, William. (writing As Peter Porcupine & Humphrey Hedgehog.)
A BONE TO GNAW FOR THE DEMOCRATS BY PETER PORCUPINE.TO WHICH IS PREFIXED A ROD FOR THE BACKS OF CRITICS.BY HUMPHREY HEDGEHOG. (BOUND WITH) : THE LIFE OF THOMAS PAINE INTERSPERSED WITH REMARKS AND REFLECTIONS BY PETER PORCUPINE.
      J. Wright, London, 1797 First British Editions. - Small 8vo. Half title, [1] title page [1] i - v [1] 7 - 175, 3 pp ads (Rod for the Backs of Critics is then i - xcv.) This is followed by a contents page for 'A Bone to Gnaw etc.,' and the text 'The Life of Thomas Paine' pp 1 - 60 (complete.) 'The Life of Thomas Paine' states that it is 'Philadelphia, Printed' but it is demonstrably printed and published in London and refers to its appearance in Philadelphia the previous year. Modern quite plain half leather binding, gilt lettered at spine with marbled boards. The latter book is a scathing and brutal attack on Paine by Cobbett who later came to revere Paine and was responsible for having his bones shipped back from America to England in 1819. It is (according to the British Library catalogue) basically an abridgment by Henry Mackenzie of "The Life of Thomas Pain" by Francis Oldys, edited with the scabrous additions by Cobbett - it had appeared in 1796 in Cobbett's Philadelphia - published Political Censor as No.5. Cobbett did not return to England until 1800. Both books are highly uncommon. Very good indeed. Texts clean with some slight foxing at prelims. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

STAUNTON, George.
AN AUTHENTIC ACCOUNT OF AN EMBASSY FROM THE KING OF GREAT BRITAIN TO THE EMPEROR OF CHINA: Undertaken By Order of The King of Great Britain; Including the Manners & Customs of the Inhabitants & Preceded by an Account of the Causes of...
DOCUMENTING THE FIRST ENGLISH EMBASSY TO CHINA, MACAO &c... London 1797, Stockdale. Full new calf, spine gilt, 1 volume edition, 33 copper engravings, 13 x 21.5 cm., abridged from the Papers of Earl Macartney, contents clean. R A R E * The official account of Earl McCartney's informative but un- successful mission to establish formal diplomatic & commer- cial relations with China. Staunton accompanied the Embassy as Secretary & compiled his book chiefly from the papers of the Ambassador & his fellow envoys. A fascinating true hist- ory of the expedition, useful primary source. The folio con- tains [102p.], 5 large folding maps, 50 finely engraved plates, large format, ca. 23 x 17 inches, 58 x 43cm., fresh, clean copy, no foxing. * IMPORTANT NOTE ! Only the FIRST EDITION of this work contains the atlas folio. Other different or later editions are as described. Beautiful views of Cochin-China, Macao, Yang-Tzw river life, many other views of China. Highly collectable title, documenting the first English Embassy to China. A most handsome addition to any great collection. This work is seldom found in its complete state, with the atlas of maps & superb copper engraved plates, with nice frontis engravings in volumes 1 & 2 of McCartney and Tchien Lung, the Great Emperor of China. * THE ATLAS OR FOLIO: Not issued until 1798: The atlas was copper etched, it contains a folded general chart of the track followed by the two ships around the world, along with 43 other fine charts, maps, plans and marvelous illustrations and views recorded for posterity. * THE PLATES: The lively and large plates illustrate coastal views, birds of an unusual character, natives and other images of signif- icance. Expertly drawn and engraved. * By and large, the CHOICE single one item done on China in the 18th century ! George Staunton [1737-1801] was a British diplomat, in 1774 Dr. Samuel Johnson met Staunton & they became life-long friends. Although the official mission to China failed, a wealth of precious information was collected and published in this first comprehensive official account. During this period of time, Great Britain was anxious to establish formal diplomatic relations with China and open usual trade relations. The unwilling Chinese resisted all Western foreign intervention in China. In the end the gifts and arguments were rejected. * NOTE: Since we have various editions, the exact copy you order will reflect which variant you will be getting. Staunton, Sir George Leonard
An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the emperor of China:
Including Cursory Observations made, and Information obtained, in travelling through that Ancient Empire, and a small part of Chinese Tartary. 1797 London First edition Three volumes, comprising the text in two volumes, quarto, pp. [ii], xxxiv, 518; xx, 626, two portraits, one plate, 26 illustrations; and the atlas, folio, 44 plates and maps. Text in contemporary russia, spines labelled 'Oriental Embassies to China'; old repairs to cracked joints. Occasional foxing. Atlas in nineteenth-century half calf, rubbed. Occasional light foxing and a few other marks, light water-stain in a few blank lower corners. Oriental Embassies Volumes I-II. [Cordier BS 2381-3; Hill 1628; Löwendahl 697; Lust 545,547.] Staunton was principal secretary to Lord Macartney's embassy, the first sent by the British to China. The embassy sought principally to improve commercial relations between Britain and China, through Canton, and to establish regular diplomatic relations between the two countries, but it also took every opportunity to gather information about China. Although Macartney and Staunton had an audience with the emperor, their proposals were rebuffed and in formal terms the embassy achieved little: 'The Chinese were not in any way inclined to make the sort of concessions required; they seem to have conceived the embassy as the representatives of a barbarian state who were bringing tribute and seeking benediction. But at least the embassy had given a number of educated Englishmen opportunities to observe China which were entirely knew' (Marshall & Williams p. 82). Macartney's journal of the mission was not published in full until 1962, but Staunton was permitted to consult it in publishing in 1797 his own, well-known account of the embassy, which went through several English editions and was translated into French and German. 'While at Rio de Janeiro, on the voyage out, Macartney wrote in his diary that "Staunton, whose curiosity and activity are seldom repressed by difficulty or fatigue, thought of little else than visiting . . . the highest pinnacle of the mountain". In China he closely observed and noted all that he saw, and during expeditions he was able to collect botanical specimens. His son, George Thomas, then just twelve years old, accompanied him to China as page to Lord Macartney, and was the only member of the mission who bothered to learn Chinese' (Oxford DNB). Staunton's account was extensively illustrated with engravings of drawings by the embassy's draughtsman, William Alexander, who later published the Costume of China (1805) and became the first keeper of prints and drawings at the British Museum: 'Alexander is best remembered for his work on China in a period in which the Chinese style greatly influenced the decorative arts in Britain' (Oxford DNB).

EDEN, FREDERIC MORTON
THE STATE OF THE POOR: OR, AN HISTORY OF THE LABOURING CLASSES IN ENGLAND
London: Printed by J. Davis, 1797. FIRST EDITION.. Faintly spotted with foxing here and there, a hint of soiling to first few leaves in each volume, but A VERY ATTRACTIVE COPY, the simple yet pleasing and entirely appropriate binding unworn, and the text in really excellent condition, the leaves fresh and mostly very clean, with only very minor defects.. An Excellent Copy of a Classic Work in Economics London: Printed by J. Davis, 1797. 279 x 225 mm. (11 x 8 7/8"). Three volumes. Folding table in Volume III. Title pages and six other leaves with a small oval area either skillfully repaired or covered over with a small patch of old paper, to remove or obscure a mark of ownership. PMM 249. Lowndes I, 712; Graesse II, 462; Kress B- As DNB says, these three volumes, published a year before Malthus' Essay on Population, form one of the classical works in economical literature, and are so rich in valuable facts, not to be found elsewhere, that they can never pass out of date. Karl Marx has said that Eden is 'the only disciple of Adam Smith during the 18th century that produced any work of importance.' In a period when social studies were yet to appear in university curricula and the Industrial Revolution was in its infancy, this pioneering work virtually created the discipline and methodology of sociology. As the extended title indicates, The State of the Poor covers the period from the Norman Conquest to the time of publication, examining the laboring classes' domestic economy, with respect to diet, dress, fuel, and habitation; and the various plans which, from time to time, have been proposed, and adopted, for the relief of the poor: together with parochial reports relative to the administration of work-houses, and the houses of industry; the state of Friendly Societies; and other public institutions; in several agricultural, commercial, and manufacturing districts. There is also a large appendix containing a comparative and chronological table of the prices of labour, of provisions, and of other commodities. Taking a stance which is both reasoned and compassionate, the author sets out to analyze the condition of the laboring classes and delineate the causes of economic hardships. Eden began his researches during the period when the battles of England with the French Republic had caused a scarcity of grain and a consequent rise in prices that made it difficult for the poor to make ends meet. Sir Frederic Eden (1766-1809) was educated at Oxford and served as the chairman of the Globe Insurance Company. This is the major work which he produced in his brief life. Very pleasing recent retrospective smooth calf, raised bands, russet and brown morocco labels on each spine, new (but not disagreeable) endpapers.

Thalestris, Queen of the Amazons. From a curious and valuable Antique.
      J. Chapman Sculpsit. London published as the Act directs Mar:10, 1797 by J. Wilkes. Stipple with etching printed in colour, 160 x 110mm. 6¼ x 4¼". The Amazons are a nation of all-female warriors in Classical and Greek mythology. Herodotus placed them in a region bordering Scythia in Sarmatia. Other historiographers place them in Asia Minor or Libya. According to the mythological Greek Alexander Romance, Queen Thalestris of the Amazons brought 300 women to Alexander the Great, hoping to breed a race of children as strong and intelligent as he. According to the legend, she stayed with the Macedonian king for 13 days and nights in the hope that the great warrior would father a daughter by her. However, several of Alexander's biographers dispute the claim, including the highly regarded secondary source, Plutarch.

PINCKNEY'S TREATY - USA TREATY OF SAN LORENZO].
- Folio (11 x 7 6/8 inches). 43 pages, sewn as issued. A FINE COPY, of a rare edition of the Real Cédula (or Royal Decree), for the 4th September 1796 which implemented the Peace Treaty of 27 October 1795, and first issued under the same title in Madrid in 1796. Variously known in English as "Pinckney's Treaty", the "Treaty of San Lorenzo", the "Treaty of Madrid", or even by its official title the "Treaty of Friendship, Limits, and Navigation Between Spain and the United States". The twenty-three Articles of the Treaty are quoted in full; the Spanish Plenipotentiary being Sr. D. Manuel de Godoy y Alvarez de Faria, Principe de la Paz, Duque de la Alcudia; the United States represented by Thomas Pinckney (1750-1828), and negotiated by George Washington. "Spanish-American affairs had deteriorated as Spain inched her territorial claims northward on the east side of the Mississippi and blocked American commerce on that river. Spain too had refused to negotiate until someone of "greater dignity" than William Short was sent to Madrid. To overcome this obvious delaying tactic and also to soothe Pinckney's pride, Washington ordered him to deal directly with the Spanish. Arriving in Madrid in midsummer 1795, Pinckney found that Spain had just made peace with France and was about to opt out of her alliance with Britain. Fearing that Jay's treaty with England could mean an anti-Spanish alliance, Spain's government was willing to improve relations with the United States. Nonetheless, Pinckney had to engage in hard bargaining and once demanded his passports to stress the seriousness of the American position. The Treaty of San Lorenzo, signed 27 October 1795, was greeted enthusiastically in the United States. It defined the American border with Spanish West Florida, extracted Spain's commitment to control Indians living within its territories, and cleared obstacles to American commerce and settlement on the lower Mississippi" (ADNB). Real Cedula were issued by the King of Spain between the 15th and 19th-centuries mainly to officials in Spanish colonies and dominions who would either have to implement them or would materially affected by them. This issue was addressed particularly to the Viceroy and Captain General of Navarra (and any other judges or officials who might have had to implement it or be affected by it), and it contains additional information relating to the publication and distribution of the Cédula and the Treaty. Hauniae, S.Trier, 1834, 4°, (2), 66 pp., 12 lith. Tafeln, Pappband der Zeit; Text etwas gebräunt, Tafeln etwas fleckig.
      - Selten - Sophus August Vilhelm Stein, "hervorragender dänischer Anatom und Chirurg, geb. 29. CALLENDER, James Thomson

Bioren and Madan, Philadelphia 1797 - [James Thomson Callender.] The American Annual Register,or, Historical Memoirs of the United States for the Year 1796. Philadelphia: Bioren and Madan, 1797. Octavo, original publisher's boards rebacked to period style. vii, 288 pp. First edition. Chapters V and VI contain the first printings of allegations later immortalized in Callender's infamous "History of the United States for the Year 1796" in which Callender set forth the charges against Hamilton of speculation in government securities. These accusations drove Hamilton to the confession of his true offense (an affair with Maria Reynolds) which he confessed to in the shocking "Reynold's pamphlet." Far from satisfied with that explanation, Callender renewed his charges with even greater vituperation in his "Sketches of the History of America." See Ford 67. Sabin 10062. Howes C69. Livius, Titus
THE HISTORY OF ROME, BY TITUS LIVIUS
      A. Strand, T. Cadell and W. Davies, London 1797 - Full leather, 6 vols. xxxviii, 526; 504; 540; 507; 475; 481pp. Can't afford the big folio edition? Hate those 19th-century 2-reelers with the microscopic print? Here is the near-perfect solution, this comfortable and readable octavo set, still an 18th century pleasureable experience, though the condeition of the bindings is precarious, with a couple of boards already severed, and a few others loosening. One interesting bonus regarding Livy--this is a good source of 2000-year-old UFO reports. These were later collected by Jules Obsequens, and were later re-collected in Lycosthenes. Here they are in English for you to study! $cheap at $599.00 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Juridical Arguments and Collections. [Two volumes.]
G.C. and J. Robinson. -99, 1797 - half-titles, endpapers spotted, pp. [viii], xv, [1], 570, [ii], liii; [viii], 391, xxiv, 4to., contemp. half russia, backstrips with four raised bands ruled in gilt and gilt lettering, marbled boards, brown endpapers, a little rubbed, joints of vol. i repaired, of vol. ii cracking but still strong, bookplate of Owen Williams, Temple House, Berks, sound Francis Hargrave was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn and was called to the bar in 1771, having presumably practised below the bar for several years. But within a year of call he attracted wide attention and admiration for his successful argument on behalf of the escaped slave James Somerset upon his application for habeas corpus. Hargrave’s learned ‘Argument in the Case of J. Somersett’ which was printed in 1772 and several times reprinted, drew upon recondite sources such as the medieval law of villeinage to persuade Lord Mansfield that no one could be a slave in England. Hargrave pioneered the editing of modern legal manuscripts, ‘which hitherto have either been confined to the small circle of those few who visit public repositories of books, or have been destined to occupy private libraries in a state nearly dormant except to the particular proprietors’ (Hargrave, Tracts, preface). Notably his copious notes on Blackstone’s manuscripts were added to the first edition of ‘Commentaries’. (ESTC T146969) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In Briefen.
Berlin, Friedrich Maurer, 1797. Gr.-8°. 2 Bl., 544 S. Mit 2 Kupfertafeln von Daniel Berger, davon 1 gefaltet: nach Hackert gemalt von A. H. Pollet, und 3 Falttabellen. Sandfarbener Pappband d. - Engelmann I, S. 435; Heeß I, 240; Griep/Luber 1535 (nur 1 Kupfer).

Abbot, John (1751-1840), And Sir James Edward Smith (1759-1828)
The Natural History of the Rarer Lepidopterous Insects of Georgia. Including Their Systematic Characters, the Particulars of Their Several Metamorphoses, and the Plants on Which They Feed. Collected From the Observations of Mr John Abbot, Many Years...
. London: printed by T. Bensley for J. Edwards, Cadell and Davies and J. White, "1797" [text watermarked 1794; plates watermarked 1820-1822]. 2 volumes, folio. (15 7/8 x 12 1/2 inches). Parallel titles and text in French and English. 104 fine hand-coloured engraved plates by John Harris after Abbot, some heightened with gum-arabic. Contemporary maroon straight-grained morocco, covers elaborately panelled in gilt and blind, the outer border with numerous fillets in gilt and blind, a wide decorative roll in gilt and a neo-classical roll in blind, the inner border with fillets in gilt and blind, a decorative roll in gilt with a zig-zag roll and a decorative arabesque roll in blind, expertly rebacked to style, the spine in six compartments with double semi-raised bands, lettered in the second and fourth compartments, the others with overall repeat decoration in gilt, gilt turn-ins, brown sugar-paper endpapers, gilt edges. A fine copy of John Abbot's masterpiece: the earliest illustrated monograph devoted to the butterflies and moths of North America. John Abbot was one of the most important and prolific of the early American natural history artists. Born in London in 1751, Abbot developed his interest in natural history and drawing as a child. His curiosity about the natural world was encouraged by his parents who were relatively wealthy (at one time the family library included copies of Mark Catesby's Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands as well as George Edwards' Natural History of Uncommon Birds and Gleanings of Natural History). Having received sponsorship from the Royal Society of London and the collectors Thomas Martyn and Dru Drury, Abbot sailed for Virginia in July 1773, with orders for both actual specimens and drawings of the local insects. For the next two years he continued to collect and paint, sending home three insect collections, although only one arrived safely. The loss of these two valuable collections at sea together with the worry over political unrest in Virginia led Abbot to move to Georgia: he settled in St. George Parish (later Burke County), Georgia in December 1775. Abbot traveled widely throughout Georgia devoting his time to the study of the natural flora and fauna. The constant flow of specimen collections and watercolours of insects, and later of birds, ensured that his name became known to many of the foremost natural scientists and collectors of the day, both in America and Europe. Sir James Edward Smith, co-founder and first president of the Linnaean Society of London, recognised Abbot's talents, and responded enthusiastically to Abbot's desire to publish an illustrated work on the butterflies and moths of Georgia, agreeing to edit the work for Abbot. Smith, in the preface to the present work, praised Abbot highly as the first author "since the celebrated Merian", to illustrate and describe the lepidoptera of the American continent scientifically, including both representations of the caterpillars and "the plants on which each insect chiefly feeds". The work is also valuable for the numerous first hand comments and observations that Abbot has added. Like the Botfield copy, this copy was issued in 1822 (the date of the watermark on some plates). Abbot's water-colours are amongst the finest natural history illustrations ever made: elegant and scientifically accurate, they rank with those of his famous contemporaries, William Bartram and Alexander Wilson. William Swainson described Abbot as one of the United States' most important natural history artists, as "a most assiduous collector, and an admirable draftsman of insects. [This] work is one of the most beautiful that this or any other country can boast of" (quoted by Sabin). Arnold Arboretum, p. 27; BM(NH) I, p. 2l; Dunthorne 287; cf.
London 1797, Bulmer. Green cloth over marbled boards, solid, 2 volulme set, 518+626p., 28 fine copper text engravings, some spine joints split but mended, head/tail & corners worn no atlas, large size 23 x 29.7 cm. FIRST EDITION * The official account of Earl McCartney's informative but un- successful mission to establish formal diplomatic & commer- cial relations with China.
