Richter, Joseph).
ABC-Buch für große Kinder. 103 S. Mit gestoch. Titelvignette. Orig.-Interimsbroschur (fleckig).
Wien 1782.

Bon exemplaire. Chadenat, 2096. Gephart, Revolutionary America, 7188.

George Washington
Washington to His Confidant James McHenry: "Do not my dear Doctor tease your Mistress in this manner"
Autograph Letter Signed, Newburgh, NY 1782 - Please inquire about receiving a copy of our Washington catalog. Summary: Washington's highly personal letter, showing a glimpse of the man behind the otherwise stolid image. Dr. James McHenry served as Washington's secretary from 1778 to 1780, as a volunteer without rank or pay. Their friendship remained strong even after McHenry left to become aide-de-camp to the Marquis de Lafayette. At this point, after victory at Yorktown, Americans were awaiting news of a final peace treaty from Paris. Washington remained at the head of the Continental Army, warily watching British General Sir Henry Clinton's army in New York City. George Washington. Autograph Letter Signed, to Major James McHenry, Newburgh, NY, August 15, 1782. 2 p. Complete Transcript: Newburgh 15.th Aug.t 1782 My dear McHenry, Let me congratulate you, and I do it very sincerely, on your restoration to health._ I was in pain for you._ I was in some for myself - and wished for my PS of M--- ; and both my P----e L----s. in J----; resolving (like a man in the last agony) not to follow the trade & occupation of a G----. any more. I attribute all the delays, & my disappointments in this business, to your sickness; for otherwise, I should denominate you an unfeeling - teasing - mortal._ In proof of it, I would assert that in March last, I committed a matter to your care of which you took no notice till July following; -and then in such a way, as to set afloat a thousand ideas; which resolved themselves into almost as many anxious questions._ These again, you acknowledge the rect. of on the 26.th of July, - and on the 3.d of August promise an answer._ When? _When? _ three or four Weeks from that date ; during this time my imagination is left on the Rack._ I remain in the field of conjecture. - unable to acct. for the causes of somethings, or to judge of their effect;_ In a word, I cannot develop some misteries, the appearance of which gave rise to those quæries, which were made the contents of a letter. Do not my dear Doctor tease your Mistress in this manner - much less your Wife, when you get one._ The first will pout, _& the other may scold - a friend will bear with it, especially one who assures you, with as much truth as I do, that he is sincere. Adieu. G:oWashington James McHenry Esq.r [autograph address leaf:] "(Private) / James McHenry Esq.r / Baltimore. [Docketing in McHenry's hand:] "Aug 15th 1782 / Washington Historical Background: The best guess at Washington's cryptic second line is: "I. wished for my [Peace of Mind] . resolving (like a man in the last agony) not to follow the trade & occupation of a G[eneral] any more." His letter of "March last" and McHenry's letters of July 26 and August 3 are not listed in the Washington Papers, so we don't know what this was really about. But we do know that Washington was eagerly awaiting the final peace treaty and the opportunity to return to his private life at Mount Vernon. To help describe this point of the war, the following excerpt is taken from another letter Washington wrote to McHenry, a month prior, on July 18, 1782: "At present, we are inveloped in darkness; and no Man, I believe, can foretell all the consequences which will result from the Naval action in the West Indies. to say no worse of it, it is an unfortunate affair. and if the States cannot, or will not rouse to more vigorous exertions, they must submit to the consequences. Providence has done much for us in this contest, but we must do something for ourselves, if we expect to go triumphantly through with it." Later, as president, Washington sought McHenry's advice and help finding candidates for important posts. In 1796, Washington selected McHenry to be the nation's third Secretary of War. James McHenry (1753-1816) was born in Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland, and educated in Dublin. He emigrated to America in 1771 and studied medicine with Dr. Benjamin Rush in Philadelphia. McHenry volunteered for military service on behalf of the colonies when hostil

The author, a native of Tomar (1739-1796), wrote of a number of biographical works, the present one being his most important and most interesting. Luís de Loureiro was a notable Portuguese captain who fought in Morocco against the Moors for over 40 years. He appeared for the first time in Morocco in 1510, serving under Nuno Fernandes de Ataíde. He was at the seige of Safim in December of that year. In 1511 he was Adaíl of that North African city. In 1515 he took part in an expedition to Mamora, and in the following year was among the defenders of Arzila during a seige by the King of Fez. In 1534 he obtained his first captaincy. After a brief rest in Portugal, he returned to Morocco in 1537 as governor of Mazagão. D. João III decided to abandon some of the Portuguese forts in Morocco and concentrate his forces at Mazagão, where Luís de Loureiro remained until 1548. He died fighting near Tanger in 1553. The present work is a crucial source for the history of the Portuguese in Morocco during the first half of the sixteenth century. It contains transcriptions of a number of letters written from this theater of warfare to the Portuguese king. Innocêncio V, 194 (calling this the author's most important work): "Todos as obras d'este nosso biographo são pouco vulgares no mercado, talvez porque d'ellas se imprimissem oucos exemplares." Figaniere 1175. Avila Perez 4961. Sousa da Câmara 1932. On Luís de Loureiro, se @Grande enciclopédia, XV, 494-5. Porbase locates two copies, both in the Biblioteca Nacional, Lisboa (but with only 5 preliminary pp.). WorldCat cites the work twice, but does not provide any locations. Library of Congress Online Catalog cites the 1946 edition only. Hollis locates a copy in the Houghton Library. Not in Orbis. Melvyl cites the 1946 edition only, in a single copy at the NRLF.

Rousseau, Jean Jacques.
Bekenntnisse. 2 Teile in 1 Band. 2 Bl., 282 S.; 1 Bl., 172 S. Mit 2 Titelvignetten. Guter Halblederbd d. Z. mit RSchild und etwas RVergoldung.
Berlin, Johann Friedrich Unger, 1782.
Coimbra, Universidade, 1782. Woodcut initials and headpieces. xvi, 445, (1) pp. 8º, recent antiquecalf, spine gilt, double gilt fillet border on each cover. Light spotting to first few leaves, very minor marginal worming to first and last few leaves, otherwise crisp and clean. Uncut and partly unopened. Overall a fine copy. FIRST & ONLY EDITION, rare, of Correia's only published poetical work. Written in 10 cantos, this ambitious epic poem is a Christian allegory in the style of Voltaire's @Henriade. The @Joanneida chronicles Portuguese history from the earliest times to the acclamation of D. João I in 1385, concluding with the Portuguese victory over Castilian forces at Aljubarrota which secured the Portuguese throne for D. João and ushered in a new royal dynasty. Correia was born in Coimbra, educated at its university and, after attempting a military career, retired to his @quinta outside Coimbra. He published several short works in his capacity as a member of the Academia Liturgica de Coimbra, and was a Correspondent of the Academia Real das Sciencias, Lisbon, until his expulsion for unknown reasons in 1798. Innocêncio IV, 297: noting the work's great rarity because few copies were sold. Monteverde 1843. Not in Ameal, Azevedo-Samodães, Avila-Perez or Palha. NUC: DLC, PU, MH.

BARSANTI Pier Vincenzo

8vo, pp. 120; some light marginal staining (more prominent in the latter part of the work), with some minor foxing and soiling, small worm trail affecting upper margins of last couple of leaves (not touching text); some neat contemporary marginal annotations in ink; uncut in modern wrappers with facsimile of title-page on upper cover. Not in Grulee; see Blake p. 49; not on OCLC; KVK locates a copy at the Royal Library of Denmark and Switzerland, with a 1781 Liege imprint on ABES.. Apparently the fifth edition (though we have been unable to trace the first) of this scarce French edition based upon the principle works of the physician William Blakey (b. 1712). Divided into three parts, the first discusses the care and hygiene of new-born infants, focusing upon diet and clothing. Section two provides 'Instructions pour connoitre les descentes ou ruptures, & leurs effets dangereux, ainsi que pour s'en defendre, les traiter & les guerir', with the final part highlighting the treatment of some the common conditions affecting later life, notably gout and digestive afflictions due to the excesses of too much food and drink.Presumably English, though described here as being a member of the 'College Royal de Chirurgie a Paris', Blakey first published his short treatise 'Instructions pour prevenir et guerir les descentes ou hernies' in 1760, with the English edition 'Observations concerning ruptures' appearing in 1764. KVK cites a 1781 Liege edition of the present work. Of his paediatric work, the first cited edition on both OCLC and ESTC is the 1792 fifth edition of 'Essay on the manner of preserving children and grown persons from ruptures. In four parts. I. on the manner of bringing up children. II. How to know ruptures. III. Examples of divers cures, among others that of the gout, by no means than those of pleasant and easy regimen. IV. Reflexions and remarks on our knowledge of the animal structure'. A note on OCLC states that earlier editions of this were published under the title 'Method for bringing up children ... and necessary observations for fathers and mothers', but we have been unable to trace any.

In barbe, ottimamente conservato. INED, 299. Weller, Druckorte, II, 216; Hayn / Got., VII, 402. Levot, I, 853. 1782 newspaper GEORGE WASHINGTON s DENTIST 1st illustrated AD
Continental Journal, Boston, MASSACHUSETTS 1782 - COMPLETE ORIGINAL American Revolutionary War newspaper, the Continental Journal (Boston, MA) dated June 27, 1782. Inside page essay that refers to the recent defeat of British General Cornwallis by American General George Washington. This battle ended the American Revolution for all practical purposes. There is also news of the negotiations going on over the ending of the Revolutionary war and the recognition of the Independence of the United States by Great Britain. There is also a back page, 6" x 4" ILLUSTRATED AD placed by a Revolutionary War era American dentist, ISAAC GREENWOOD, the father of the FIRST AMERICAN BORN DENTIST, John Greenwood who was the dentist for GEORGE WASHINGTON. This is the FIRST and earliest illustrated dental ad in a US newspaper !! Great newspaper to frame and hang in a present day dental office. The Siege of Yorktown or Battle of Yorktown in 1781 was a decisive victory by a combined assault of American forces led by General George Washington and French forces led by General Comte de Rochambeau over a British Army commanded by General Lord Cornwallis. It proved to be the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War, as the surrender of Cornwallis’s army (the second major surrender of the war) prompted the British government to eventually negotiate an end to the conflict. Dr. John Greenwood (1760-1819) was George Washington's personal dentist, often called the Father of Modern Dentistry, was responsible for designing Washington's famous dentures, which were not wood but carved from hippopotamus tusk. He invented the first known "dental foot engine" in 1790. He was the son of Isaac Greenwood, the first native-born American dentist. Good-Very Good condition. There are two light brown stains on the newspaper. This listing includes the complete entire original newspaper, NOT just a clipping or a page of it.

Steuben, Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin, Baron von:
REGULATIONS FOR THE ORDER AND DISCIPLINE OF THE TROOPS OF THE UNITED STATES. PART I [all published].
Hartford: Printed by Hudson and Goodwin, [?] 1782 - 138,[6]pp. plus eight folding plates. Contemporary calf. Binding rubbed and worn. Rear hinge separating along bottom half of joint. Contemporary ownership inscriptions on titlepage and rear pastedown. Light foxing and tanning. Most of plate one lacking; plate two significantly torn along fold, but intact; last section of plate seven lacking, about two inches; small tear to plate eight along fold. Still, a relatively good copy in a contemporary binding. A comparatively nice copy of this important military manual, which was written expressly for the use of American troops during the Revolutionary War and first published in 1779. The German-born Steuben, well-trained in the highly disciplined military system developed under Frederick the Great, served as inspector general of the Continental Army. In this capacity he wrote his REGULATIONS FOR THE ORDER AND DISCIPLINE OF THE TROOPS OF THE UNITED STATES on orders from the Continental Congress. First published in 1779, the work became the standard text for the Continental Army and the United States Army into the early 19th century. Fifty editions, abridgements, extracts, and adaptations were printed before 1800. Steuben's contribution to American independence can not be underestimated. "He was unrivaled among the citizens of the new nation as an expert on military affairs. His introduction of European military concepts to the Continental army marks the beginning of a truly professional military tradition in the United States" - ANB. This edition was published three years after the first edition, and is one of two editions printed in Hartford circa 1782 by Hudson and Goodwin. While most references cite this imprint as having a date of 1782, the American Antiquarian Society asserts a publication date of 1787 based on an advertisement in the Connecticut Courant in March of that year. A good copy, in a contemporary binding, of an early printing of the first military manual devised for the Continental Army, a foundation work for American military history and the Revolutionary War. Octavo, contemporary half brown calf, burgundy morocco spine label, marbled boards: pp. (5), 2-163, (1); (2), 3-20; (3), 2-72; (3), 2-47, (1); (3), 4-88; (3), ii-xxvii, (2), 2-191. $2200. First edition, a scarce collection of major essays (1782-1793) on Catholic emancipation in a period of revolution, featuring Burke's powerful essay declaring Catholic exclusion from constitutional rights "a serious evil" and over ten additional writings, including the influential works of Irish leaders such as Napper Tandy and Wolf Tone, scarce in contemporary marbled boards. In the late 1780s the governments of Ireland and England "steadily regained confidence following the end of the American war! [but] after the collapse of the ancien regime in France, nothing would ever be the same! The controversy over the new French regime provided the central dividing issue in Irish politics" (McBride, Scripture Politics, 165-7). With Britain entering a long war with France, "the American Revolution, and especially the Declaration of Independence, had made an impact upon Ireland! [as] Irish leaders began to acquire popular support for their attempts to widen the sphere of toleration" (O'Gorman, Edmund Burke, 82). This major contemporary collection of influential writings on religious freedom and, specifically, on the rights of Roman Catholics, contains a seminal essay by Edmund Burke, essays by Thomas Potts and Jean Francois de La Marche, several anonymous writings, and a key series of Tracts that speak to progress signaled by the Parliament's Quebec and Catholic Relief Acts of 1774 and 1778, and the Catholic Relief Act of 1829. Burke's Letter to Sir Hercules Langrishe offers one of his finest writings in its argument for the enfranchisement of Roman Catholics. He firmly states that their exclusion from constitutional rights "seems to me a serious evil! This way of proscribing men by whole nations! I can never believe to be politic or expedient, much less necessary for the existence of any state or church in the world" (19, 37). Interestingly, just as "Burke was preaching with unrivalled power the danger of tampering with the framework of the existing British Constitution, he argued that the Constitution of Ireland could not but be better strengthened by introducing gradually and carefully a Catholic element of property and education into political life" (Lercky, 135). As his biographer Cruise O'Brien notes, Burke "did more than anyone else to secure legislative redress for the benefit of Irishmen." Burke's essay is aided here by an especially scarce assemblage of Tracts that includes writings by James Napper Tandy, colorful leader of the United Irishmen, together with Theobold Wolf Tone's 1791 Argument on Behalf of the Catholics of Ireland, which "made many converts to the Catholic cause (McBride, 169). This scarce collection of largely first editions features the first London edition, first printing, of Burke's Letter, the preferred edition with Burke's corrections of errors in the Dublin edition printed several weeks earlier. Lettre (1793) with title-page vignette displaying the badge of the Order of the Garter. Address to the President (1782) and Tracts (1792) without half titles. Goldsmith I:15432. ESTC T90019, T123892, N29418, T037951, T210850. Armorial bookplate. Contemporary marginalia. Text fresh with light foxing, mainly to preliminaries, slight edge-wear and rubbing to contemporary marbled boards, contemporary calf expertly restored. An extremely good copy of this historic collection.

Joachin Ibarra, Madrid 1782 - lii+315 pages. Octavo (8" x 5 3/4") bound in full leather with gilt lettering to spine. Translated with notes by Pedro Varela y Ulloa. First Spanish edition. A text that engaged the well-studied debates about the natural history of the Americas and Spain’s colonial history. In 1780, in Venice, Juan Nuix published Riflessioni imparziali supra l'umanita degli spagnuoli nell' Indie contro i pretersi filosofi e politici. Nuix, a Catalan living in Italy since the expulsion of the Jesuits, wrote the book to defend Spanish colonialism and historiography against the attacks of Robertson and Raynal. It sailed by the censors in the Council of the Indies, and two separate translations appeared in succession, one in 1782, edited by a member of the Royal Council, Pedro Varela y Ulloa, and another in 1783, by Joseph Nuix, Juan's brother. The Spanish edition sponsored by the crown opened with an essay by Varela y Ulloa, in which he first offered a searing Critique of traditional forms of colonialism, not unlike that put forth by Raynal. After describing military campaigns in foreign lands, from Alexander the Great to Genghis Kahn, as butcheries, Varela y Ulloa went on to claim that the Spanish colonialism was unique. The crimes attributed to Spain in the Indies had been committed by private individuals, who did not represent the nation as a whole, and who had acted as they did while surrounded by hungry cannibals. Moreover, compared with the atrocities committed by other European colonial powers, the actions of the Spaniards looked like misdemeanors. Varela y Ulloa's effort to portray Spanish colonialism as unique benign captured the essence of Nuix's thesis well. Nuix's defense of the record of Spanish colonialism opened with passages that sought to bolster his credibility by stressing that he was a Catalan, and that Catalans had not really participated in the Spanish colonization of the Indies, so that he could not be accused of being partisan. He then articulated a five-pronged defense of Castilian colonial behavior in America, seeking to demonstrate the unreliability of the sources used by Robertson and Raynal, and of their interpretations. Nuix First set out to prove that charges of Spanish cruelty to Amerindians were exaggerations, originally put into circulation by writers such as Las Casas, whose reports on the destruction of the Indies were at the root of most foreign criticisms of Spain. According to Nuix, Las Casas was of Flemish origin, which explained why he had sought to undermine Spain. Las Casas also often contradicted himself, Nuix argued no impartial jury could trust such "an inept" witness. Foreign historians who had echoed Las Casas's allegations were not credible either, not Robertson, whose moderation had prompted him to dismiss Las Casas. Robertson had selected and reinterpreted the testimony of Spanish witnesses when recounting various colonial massacres. Instead of quoting them, moreover, Robertson had manipulated the testimony of witnesses to depict the Amerindians as passive victims of Spanish cruelty. History was not a matter of interpretation, however, but of faithfully presenting the testimony of witnesses, and in that respect, Robertson lacked credibility. In order to prove that Spaniards in America had not behaved like greedy barbarians, Nuix argued that the alleged depopulation caused by the Conquest was the product of factors outside human control. The infantile susceptibility of the natives to disease, for example, was why epidemics had wiped them out. The barrenness of the Americas and the idleness of the originally small number of natives had moved the conquerors to create economies based on mining and large estates. Such economies along with the foreign monopoly on colonial trade, not Spanish cruelty and greed, Nuix contended, were responsible for having slowed both markets and population growth. Condition: All extremities rubbed, corners bumped some old signatures to title and occasionally in margins el [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

SIEGE OF GIBRALTAR, 1780.]
A view of Gibraltar, with Sir George Brydges Rodney coming to its relief, & bringing with him five men of war, part of Don Juan de Langara’s fleet, captured off St Vincent in his way to that garrison, on the 16th of January 1780. To his Royal Highness Prince William Henry, Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, this plate, representing a scene the result of an action so advantageous and honorable to his country, and in which signal service his Royal Highness sustained so a glorious a share, is, by permission, most humbly and respectfully dedicated, by Robert Wilkinson and Robert Pollard.
London, R. Wilkinson & R. Pollard, 1 June 1782. - 570 x 770 mm, engraving; a fine example with wide margins. A fine view of Gibraltar, drawn by the marine painter Dominic Serres and engraved by Robert Pollard. It depicts the British garrison, with Rodney’s squadron at anchor and several of Admiral Langara’s Spanish fleet, which had been captured during the celebrated ‘Moonlight battle’.In 1779, Spain had entered the American War of Independence against Britain with the direct aim of capturing Gibraltar and had soon sent an army to besiege the British garrison there. The following year it was decided that a naval squadron under Rodney should be sent to relieve Gibraltar. ‘Though some ministers (Sandwich in particular) were sceptical, the British public was deeply persuaded of the value of Gibraltar (and Minorca which depended on it), and the ministry felt obliged to give it a high priority’ (Rodger, Command of the ocean p. 343). The expedition was an outstanding success. ‘On 7 January 1780, off Finisterre, Rodney largely captured a convoy of sixteen Spanish ships and a few days later, off Cape St Vincent, he met and, in the famous Moonlight battle, comprehensively defeated Admiral Langara, the Spanish commander. Rodney’s force was much superior to Langara’s but the nature of the battle, a night attack in heavy seas with an immediate order by Rodney to chase, marked the aggressive approach that Rodney habitually brought to his actions. Six of the nine Spanish ships were captured and one was blown up’ (Oxford DNB). Gibraltar was relieved and Britain’s sea command in the Mediterranean was secured.

Pocket diary: Yorkshire
The Yorkshire memorandum book
[Pocket diary: Yorkshire.] The Yorkshire memorandum book; or new daily journal, for the year of our Lord, 1782. Containing one hundred and four pages of ruled writing paper, for the purpose of keeping accounts of receipts, disbursements, appointments, &c. York: printed by W. Blanchard and Co., for the booksellers of York; sold by Richardson and Urquhart (London); and all other booksellers, n.d. (1781). xvi, (106), 59(1) pp. 8vo, contemporary sheep (edges worn), rebacked, black morocco label, later plain paper title-label on upper cover. First edition. The first attempt to create a pocket diary designed specifically for use in Yorkshire; the notion was sufficiently successful that publication continued on an annual basis through the 1790's, though records of surviving copies are sparse. The opening pages provide information about local fines, transport, postal services and rates, etc. The section at the end contains an account of the city of York, and of Yorkshire as a whole, along with the names of local officials, etc., and a particularly full list of the results of horse races throughout Great Britain during the whole of 1781. Of particular interest is a closely-printed three-page description of the entertainments of York (signed "N. S."), with critical remarks on the performances of various actors and actresses who appeared on the York circuit. Few of these pocket diaries appear to have survived. The ESTC (01/03) lists one copy only for this first year (L, lacking 10 pp. from the diary section), along with single copies for 1793 (NcD, imperfect), and 1796 (LEu). Title-page trimmed a trifle close at the top (touching "The"), but generally in very good condition.

THE FIRST EDITION OF A VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD & AMERICA ! Paris 1782, Moutard. Half calf over blueboards, 2 vol. set: 432+272p., indices, French text,1 tiny worm hole first 40+p. vol. 1, else both vols. clean, solid, 10 folding copper etc- hed maps & plates, original binding. FIRST EDITION COMPLETE Viscount de Pierre Marie Francois Pages, was a French explorer, he was born in Toulouse in 1748 & died in 1793 on Santo Domingo. * This is a famous and important circum-navigation work. The first volume begins with the great explorer voyage as he left France bound for the New World and arrived in [America] New Orleans in 1767, proceeded into the Red River to Natchitoches and on to Nacogdoches passing through Texas to San Antonio. He turned his travel South into Mexico, then pointed his vessel Westward thereby sailing across the great Pacific ocean through the Marianas and Philippine islands, South to the East Indies, visiting Batavia and then to Southern India. From there he continued his historic voyage up the forbidding Persian Gulf, even visiting Jerusalem. The accompanying maps & charts show these places. * The second volume focuses on his voyage in 1773-4 and now he was accompanied Kerguelen-Tremarec in their quest to find a Southern Continent. It was Kerguelen's second voyage and it ended in a disaster as the ship Rolland which lost its mast during a great storm resulting in Kerguelen being court- marshaled. It was at this time, that Page continued later by joining a Dutch whaler to Sptizbergen and the first plate shows the capture of a whale. * The second volume is mostly devoted to his voyage and search for a Southern Continent under the guidance of Kerguelen in 1773-4. It was Kerguelen's second voyage and it ended in a disaster of the ship Rolland which lost its mast during a great storm. resulting Kerguelen being court-marshaled. * BINDING, CONDITION: This work is bound in what we believe to be original gilt half calf, with gold decorations. Volume 1 has ca 3.5 cm split to the top front of hinge else solid, The small worm hole penetrates the first 49 pages, but is not objectionable and the print is easily read in spite of this, which begins from the inside cover. Volume 2 is solid, the leather firm, no cracks. Both volumes are half-leather over original blue paper-covered boards which shows the usual minor scuffing, the set is however solid and firm. The folding plates are bright, clean, without any tears, strong images, all folded as issued and printed on heavy stiff rag paper. By and large a nice set, with minor and usual flaws to the exterior. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: HOWES p.13 CLARK I:285 HILL 1285; English edition: 526-7p.
