HEDWIG, JOHANNES
Fundamentum Historiae Naturalis Muscorum Frondosorum Concernens Eorum Flores, Fructus, Seminalem Propagationem Adiecta Generum Dispositione Methodica Iconibus Illustratis Pars I & II
|
Lipzig: : Siegried Lebrecht Crusium,, 1782. Full Leather. Very Good. 4to (24.7 x 19.7 cm). Contemporary tree calf. Collation: Pars I ! xxiii, [1] 112 + 10 copper engraved plates; Pars II ! 107 [1] + 10 copper engraved plates. Spine is tooled into panels with gilt floral borders and central image. Some loss to bottom left corner of leather title. Minor loss is evident at top of spine. Boards have minor wear to corners. Original marble end papers are free of defects or bookplate. Title page of Pars I has engraved vignette showing portrait of Hedwig in circular disc surrounded by microscope, drawings of specimens and other tools and apparatus for field research. There is a floral and grass background. Title page for Pars II does not have vignette. Minor foxing present along edges and gutter but not extending to text. Folding engraved plates in excellent condition with delineation by Hedwig and printing by Capieux 1782. The folding plates have exceptional structural and cellular detail as observed by Hedwig. The information present in the plates is truly remarkable detail for this early period. Hedwig made very fine detail examination of moss capsules as seen in the plates. II but without vignette. This is a scarce work on the classification of mosses. Hedwig was a German physician and professor of botany in Leipzig who was an authority on mosses and founder of the field of Bryology, study of mosses. The moss genus Hedwigia is named after him. Hes know to have collected plants in the morning before visiting patients and then working on these specimens in the evening. He figured out the reproductive cycle of mosses with the alternation between sexual and asexual generations. His research also yielded information to separate lichens froms mosses. (2 copies in OCLC) (Nissen, 827; Plesch, 329; Pritizel, 3878).

LACOMBE, Jacques.
Encyclopédie méthodique. Arts et métiers mécaniques.
|

Bon exemplaire.

[TRUMBULL, John]
McFingal: A Modern Epic Poem in Four Cantos
|
[TRUMBULL, John]. McFingal: A Modern Epic Poem in Four Cantos. Contemporary leather with raised spine bands and gilt-lettered red morocco spine label. Hartford, CT: Printed by Hudson and Goodwin, 1782. with GOLDSMITH, [Oliver] Dr. The Deserted Village. A Poem. Phila.: Printed for William Prichard, and William Poyntell, 1782. First complete edition; the first two cantos had first appeared in 1775 (reprinted in 1776). BAL 20539. Evans 17750. Rare. BAL lists only eight copies of this edition and OCLC only one. A satire on British blunders and cowardice during the American Revolution. Though the poem has been called anti-Tory propaganda, its appeal was mostly literary and it went through some 30 editions between 1782 and 1840. Names of several former owners on front free endpaper and title page. The inscription on the title page "Geo. Izard, 1788." George Izard served as a General in the War of 1812 and later as governor of the Arkansas Territory. In 1788 his father Ralph, who had served as a delegate to the continental Congress, was elected United States Senator from South Carolina. It is likely that he is the George Izard to whom this copy belonged. Though The Deserted Village is the second American printing (Evans 17550), it is the first printing to have a solely American imprint. The first appearance (Evans 12060) reads "London: Printed. Philadelphia: Re-printed by William and Thomas Bradford, at the London Coffee-House, 1771). Rare. OCLC lists only two copies of this edition. Minor edgewear, some wear to spine hinges, light scattered foxing to a few leaves, else a very good or better copy.

Wieland, Christoph Martin
|
Dessau: auf Kosten der Verlags-Kasse und zu finden in der Buchhandlung der Gelehrten, 1782. First edition. 2 volumes in 1. 8vo. 304pp. 261pp. Paper covered boards. Famous work on the satirical work "Horazen's Briefe", translated from the Latin by renowned German poet and novelist, C.M. Wieland (see below). Serious age wear, water marks and repair to boards, with spine missing. Binding still firm. Browning and sporadic foxing, with some underlining in red to very few pages, not affecting text. Owners' writing to inside of both boards. In German, in Gothic letters. binding in poor, book in good- condition.#11; #11;On the author:#11;Christoph Martin Wieland (1733-1813) was a German poet and novelist. He spend his boyhood in Biberach until he was sent to the school of Kloster (monestary) Bergen in 1747. When he left the school in 1749, he widely read the Latin classics and leading contemporary French writers; amongst German poets his favourites were Brockes and Klopstock. During the summer of 1750, he fell in love with Sophie Gutermann (a cousin of his), and this love affair inspired him to plan his first ambitious works, Lobgesang auf die Liebe (1751), followed by Die Natur der Dinge (1752), a didactic poem in six books of Alexandrine verse. In 1750 he went to the University of Tubingen as a student of law but his time was mainly taken up with literary studies. The poems he wrote at the university are pietistic in tone and dominated by the influence of Klopstock. They attracted the attention of the Swiss literary reformer, J.J. Bodmer, who invited Wieland to visit him in Zurich in the summer of 1752. Wieland remained in Switzerland until 1760, where he #11; spent the last year at Bern as a private tutor.Wieland, as Gotthold Lessing said, "forsook the ethereal spheres to wander again among the sons of men." [quoted from the Encyclopedia Britannica] Wieland met again his early love Sophie Gutermann, who had become the wife of Hofrat La Roche, then manager of Count Stadion's estates. The former poet of an austere pietism now became the advocate of a light-hearted philosophy, from which frivolity and sensuality were not excluded. In Don Sylvia von Rosalva (1764), a romance in imitation of Don Quixote, he held up to ridicule his earlier faiths and in the Comische Erzahlungen (1765) he gave his extravagant imagination only too free a rein. More important is the novel Geschichte des Agathon (1766-1767), in which, under the guise of a Greek fiction, Wieland described his own spiritual and intellectual growth. This work, which Lessing recommended as "a novel of classic taste," [quoted from the Encyclopedia Britannica] marks an epoch in the development of the modern psychological novel. Of equal importance was Wieland's translation of twenty-two of Shakespeare's plays into prose (8 vols., 1762-1766); it was the first attempt to present the English poet to the German people in something approaching entirety.Wieland married in 1765, and between 1769 and 1772 was professor of philosophy at Erfurt. With the exception of some years Weimar remained Wieland's home until his death. Here in 1773, he founded Der teutsche Merkur, which under his editorship (1773-1789) became the most influential literary review in Germany. Without creating a school in the strict sense of the term, Wieland had a strong influence on the German literature of his time. The verse-romance and the novel--more especially in Austria--benefited by his example, and even the Romanticism of the 19th century borrowed from him in its excursions into the literatures of southern Europe. The qualities which distinguish his work, his fluent style and light touch, his careless frivolity in contrast to poetic depth, show him to have been in literary temperament more akin to Ariosto and Voltaire than to the more spiritual and serious leaders of German poetry; but these very qualities in Wieland's poetry introduced a balancing element into German classical literature and added materially to its fullness and completeness. This is not to say, however, that Wieland shouldn't be counted among the great German poetic geniuses. Kant himself refers to Wieland in the same sentence as Homer, citing him as an example of Kant's idea of artistic genius. (Critique of Judgment, 5:309, quoted in Encyclopedia Britannica)#11;

THE FIRST EDITION OF A VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD & AMERICA ! Paris 1782, Moutard. Half calf over blueboards, 2 vol. set: 432+272p., indices, French text,1 tiny worm hole first 40+p. vol. 1, else both vols. clean, solid, 10 folding copper etc- hed maps & plates, original binding. FIRST EDITION COMPLETE Viscount de Pierre Marie Francois Pages, was a French explorer, he was born in Toulouse in 1748 & died in 1793 on Santo Domingo. * This is a famous and important circum-navigation work. The first volume begins with the great explorer voyage as he left France bound for the New World and arrived in [America] New Orleans in 1767, proceeded into the Red River to Natchitoches and on to Nacogdoches passing through Texas to San Antonio. He turned his travel South into Mexico, then pointed his vessel Westward thereby sailing across the great Pacific ocean through the Marianas and Philippine islands, South to the East Indies, visiting Batavia and then to Southern India. From there he continued his historic voyage up the forbidding Persian Gulf, even visiting Jerusalem. The accompanying maps & charts show these places. * The second volume focuses on his voyage in 1773-4 and now he was accompanied Kerguelen-Tremarec in their quest to find a Southern Continent. It was Kerguelen's second voyage and it ended in a disaster as the ship Rolland which lost its mast during a great storm resulting in Kerguelen being court- marshaled. It was at this time, that Page continued later by joining a Dutch whaler to Sptizbergen and the first plate shows the capture of a whale. * The second volume is mostly devoted to his voyage and search for a Southern Continent under the guidance of Kerguelen in 1773-4. It was Kerguelen's second voyage and it ended in a disaster of the ship Rolland which lost its mast during a great storm. resulting Kerguelen being court-marshaled. * BINDING, CONDITION: This work is bound in what we believe to be original gilt half calf, with gold decorations. Volume 1 has ca 3.5 cm split to the top front of hinge else solid, The small worm hole penetrates the first 49 pages, but is not objectionable and the print is easily read in spite of this, which begins from the inside cover. Volume 2 is solid, the leather firm, no cracks. Both volumes are half-leather over original blue paper-covered boards which shows the usual minor scuffing, the set is however solid and firm. The folding plates are bright, clean, without any tears, strong images, all folded as issued and printed on heavy stiff rag paper. By and large a nice set, with minor and usual flaws to the exterior. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: HOWES p.13 CLARK I:285 HILL 1285; English edition: 526-7p. He received his M.D. at Harderwijk in 1708, and taught anatomy and surgery at Altdorf (1711-1720) and Helmstadt (1720-1758). In addition to his influential textbooks on anatomy and surgery, Heister wrote treatises on cataract, in which he asserted the then-new doctrine that cataract is an opacification of the crystalline lens itself. See: Hirschberg, IV, pp. 1-16. PROVENANCE: Charles Atwood Kofoid (1865-1947) became a member of the zoology department of the University of California in 1901, where he was chair of the department until his retirement (1910-1936). "Anyone who has had the privilege of using the great resources of the Kofoid Collection in the Biology Library of the University of California at Berkeley is aware of the debt of the life sciences to Kofoid. His personal bookplate, which depicts the world of marine biology, protozoology, and parasitology, testifies to his wide interests and enthusiasms." DSB, VII, p. 447.

|
Paris: M. Lambert & F. J. Baudouin, 1782. Three volumes, twelemo. [2], 412; [2], 390; 423 pp Contemporary tree calf, gilt flat spines with red and brown morocco labels, edges sprinkled red. Some joints neatly repaired. A very good copy, complete with half-titles in Volumes I and II. First edition of this treatise on education, inspired by the ideas of Rousseau, cloaked in the guise of an epistolary novel. Though it has been often reprinted, the first edition is uncommon. Madame de Genlis (1746-1830) was born of a noble but impoverished Burgundian family. At the age of six she was received as a canoness into the noble chapter of Alix near Lyons, with the title of Madame la Comtesse de Lancy, taken from the town of Bourbon-Lancy. She was educated entirely at home. After she grew up, she married Charles Brillart de Genlis, marquis de Sillery, and she became determined to remedy her incomplete education and to satisfy her thirst for knowledge. Through the influence of her aunt, Madame de Montesson, who had been clandestinely married to the Duke of Orleans, she entered the Palais Royal as lady-in-waiting to the Duchess of Chartres (1770). She became governess to the daughters of the family, a role she took with great seriousness. She developed a number of ingenious educational theories, which she explained in several works, including Théatre d’education, Annales de la vertu, and the present work. She anticipated many modern methods of teaching. History was taught with the help of magic lantern slides, and botany was taught by a practical botanist during their walks. She was influenced by the educational theories of Rousseau, and she in turn influenced the Edgeworths. Cioranescu 30608. Plagnot-Dieval, Bibliographie des Ecrivains Francaise, 1975.

Stutgard: Stamp. di Cotta, (1782). First edition. 4to. 129p. Modern floral boards. Text in Italian and French. Dampstains to the first five leaves, else a very good copy. Performed for the first time in Stuttgart on September 17, 1782 with music by Johann Rudolph Zumsteeg A. Poli, C. L. Dieter, and J. F. Gauss. The libretto is after Joseph Uriot's French text rendered into Italian by Verazi. Cast list and list of important personages. Scenery and costumes by Nicolò Guibal, dances by Regneau. The masonic links to the opera are due to the fact that the composer Zumsteeg [Zum Steeg], Johann Rudolf (b Sachsenflur, nr Mergentheim, 10 Jan 1760; d Stuttgart, 27 Jan 1802) while Konzertmeister to the Württemberg court came out unreservedly for works with masonic symbolism and gave the first Stuttgart performances of Die Zauberflöte, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte. His own greatest success as opera composer came with Die Geisterinsel to Gotter's adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Joseph Uriot (1713 - 1778 or 1788) was a professor of French literature at Caroline University. His allegorical text may have masonic content since Uriot was a himself a mason. Rare: three locations, one in U.S.: Texas: HRH; Bibliotheksverbund Bayern; Bibliotheque Nationale.

The School of Raphael; or, the Student!s Guide to Expression in Historical Painting. Illustrated by Examples engraved by Duchange, and others, under the inspection of Sir Nicholas Dorigny, from his own Drawings after the most celebrated Heads in the
|
London: John Boydell, 1782. Rare, extra-illustrated second edition of an artist!s drawing manual based on the !most celebrated heads! from Raphael!s Sistine Chapel tapestry cartoons, which William and Mary had Sir Christopher Wren install in their own gallery at Hampton Court (later transferred to V & A.) Although eagerly studied by 18th century British artists as the fons et origo of academic art, the cartoons proved controversial with the advent of stronger artistic personalities. It is no accident that Sir Joshua Reynolds published an influential article during in 1759, when the first editionj of the present work appeared. "Eager to find faults in Raphael's Cartoons, Reynolds's "Connoisseur" uses them to air his familiarity with academic rules and modern art theory, citing the "Line of Beauty and Grace", the need for variety, and the virtues of pyramidal design.! (Krysmanski). The School of Raphael!s 102 plates show moods ranging from Affection (in Christ!s Charge to Peter) to Zeal (Elymas the Sorcerer). The volume also includes !THE OUTLINES of each HEAD,! (unnumbered and interleaved with plates 1-45). These Raphael heads were drawn by Nicolas Dorigny, and engraved by the best known reproductive printers of the era.. The book also included !several PLATES of the Most celebrated Antique Statues, Skeletons and Anatomical Figures, Engraved by an Eminent Artist,! (plates I-XII). This copy of The School of Raphael is extra-illustrated with four large-scale engravings of nudes in classical poses and landscapes. They were drawn and engraved by the prolific Bernard Picart (1673-1733), and likely come from a larger volume of anatomy studies (numbers 60, 62-3, 66).The present edition is known to have been in the library of Sir John Soane. OCLC: LoC, UChicago, Art Institute of Chicago, Winterthur, MMA.*Catalogue of the Library of Sir John Soane!s Museum, London, 1878, p 312; Krysmanski, "Benjamin Ralph's School of Raphael (1759): Praise for Hogarth and a Direct Source for Reynolds", British Journal for Eighteenth-Century Studies, 24 (Spring 2001), 15-32.. Folio [42.8 x 28.5 cm], [6], 21, [1] p., XI [i.e. XII], 102 leaves of plates from Dorigny!s drawings after Raphael (45 in outline), 12 on geometry, anatomy and antique sculpture, and four extra-illustrated leaves by B. Picart. Bound in nineteenth-century half calf and marbled boards with leather corners. Rubbing to spine, boards and edges, with a partial library sticker on front pastedown. Very occasional foxing to leaves and plates, a few graphite annotations in margins; order of several plates near end transposed.

|
Lione Frères Perisse 1782 8vo; Leg. coeva p. pelle bruna marmoriz., fregi in oro sul dorso, dentelle, risg. in carta marmoriz.; pp. XVI, 218, (2), leg. cart. dec. coeva.

Dionisio Longino
Trattato l'Aureo Dionisio Longino
|
Marcuzzi Piero 1782 - L?AUREO TRATTATO DI DIONISIO LONGINO INTORNO AL SUBLIME MODO DI PARLARE E DI SCRIVERE TRADOTTO DAL GRECO DA ANTON FRANCESCO GORI EDIZIONE ILLUSTRATA. Trattato ad opera di Longino, ritenuto a lungo essere Longino Cassio (213-273) filosofo e retore greco o Longino Dionisio; poich?er? paternit?i quest?opera non ?itenuta certa dalla critica moderna, l?autore ?ggi denominato Pseudo-Longino. Il Trattato noto come Del Sublime, risale iprobabilmente al primo secolo AD, in quanto ?tato scritto allo scopo di confutare le teorie di Cecilio, retore siciliano del medesimo periodo, la cui opera Longino definisce in modo dispregiativo: ?Trattatello? L?A. intende per Sublime il termine greco hypsos, vale a dire l?eccellenza nel linguaggio, l?espressione di un grande spirito e il potere di ammaliare e commuovere il lettore. Il Sublime si oppone allo stile ampolloso, alla sciocca vanit?al sentimentalismo e alla freddezza. L?A. inoltre sostiene che la grandezza del pensiero, se non ?nnata, pu?sere acquisita mediante l?emulazione dei suoi modelli, tra i quali Omero, Demostene e Platone. Le frequenti citazioni di grandi autori classici hanno anche il merito di aver preservato testi altrimenti perduti, come una delle odi di Saffo (pag. 29). Contiene anche: Discorso d?Anton Francesco Gori intorno alla sua traduzione e all?opera e alla persona di Dionisio Longino. volume in-8° piccolo, legatura d?attesa, piccola etichetta con titolo scritto a mano sul dorso. Pagine [20] + 120 Incisione in nero, in calcografia, posta in antiporta, riportante una citazione tradotta dal latino. Incisione in nero, in calcografia, sul frontespizio, raffigurante Dedalo che sta terminando l?ala destra per darla al figlio Icaro, che ?mpaziente di spiccare il volo: il motto in greco, sostiene che?tutte le cose belle sono ardue e malagevoli? - Philipp Franz von Walther (1782-1849), Chirurg und Ophthalmologe, Leibarzt König Ludwigs I. von Bayern. - (An den Generalsekretär der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften Friedrich von Schlichtegroll), der ihn wegen einer Augenerkrankung seiner Frau konsultiert hatte."Hochwohlgebohrner Herr Director! / Verehrtester Freund!Ihro Gnaden die Frau Gemahlin bitte ich, Sich von allen das Auge anstrengenden Arbeiten, besonders bei Licht eine Zeitlang gänzlich zu enthalten, niemals die Augen kalt zu waschen, und den Genuß gesalzener Speisen zu vermeiden. Mit dem hier verordneten Augenwasser wolle Dieselbe 4 mal des Tags lauwarm mittelst einer feinen Leinwand die Augen auswaschen: es darf von dem Augenwasser auch etwas in das Auge hinein kommen. Auf diese Weise wird sich das Übel bald heben.Von Ihnen, verehrtester Freund! bey dieser Gelegenheit einmal wieder einige Nachricht zu erhalten, hat mir die größte Freude verursacht. Noch größere wäre es mir gewesen, hätte ich Sie in München im Carneval besuchen können. Allein meine Geschäfte erlauben mir selten Landshut auf längere Zeit zu verlassen: und München soll man auf ganz kurze Zeit nicht besuchen"Walther, ein Anhänger von Schellings Naturphilosophie, war seit 1804 Professor in Landshut, später in Bonn und in München. RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE (Nicolas-Edme);
Les Contemporaines.
|
- Erste Ausgabe.
Bon exemplaire. Chadenat, 2096. Gephart, Revolutionary America, 7188.

George Washington
Washington to His Confidant James McHenry: "Do not my dear Doctor tease your Mistress in this manner"
|
Autograph Letter Signed, Newburgh, NY 1782 - Please inquire about receiving a copy of our Washington catalog. Summary: Washington's highly personal letter, showing a glimpse of the man behind the otherwise stolid image. Dr. James McHenry served as Washington's secretary from 1778 to 1780, as a volunteer without rank or pay. Their friendship remained strong even after McHenry left to become aide-de-camp to the Marquis de Lafayette. At this point, after victory at Yorktown, Americans were awaiting news of a final peace treaty from Paris. Washington remained at the head of the Continental Army, warily watching British General Sir Henry Clinton's army in New York City. George Washington. Autograph Letter Signed, to Major James McHenry, Newburgh, NY, August 15, 1782. 2 p. Complete Transcript: Newburgh 15.th Aug.t 1782 My dear McHenry, Let me congratulate you, and I do it very sincerely, on your restoration to health._ I was in pain for you._ I was in some for myself - and wished for my PS of M--- ; and both my P----e L----s. in J----; resolving (like a man in the last agony) not to follow the trade & occupation of a G----. any more. I attribute all the delays, & my disappointments in this business, to your sickness; for otherwise, I should denominate you an unfeeling - teasing - mortal._ In proof of it, I would assert that in March last, I committed a matter to your care of which you took no notice till July following; -and then in such a way, as to set afloat a thousand ideas; which resolved themselves into almost as many anxious questions._ These again, you acknowledge the rect. of on the 26.th of July, - and on the 3.d of August promise an answer._ When? _When? _ three or four Weeks from that date ; during this time my imagination is left on the Rack._ I remain in the field of conjecture. - unable to acct. for the causes of somethings, or to judge of their effect;_ In a word, I cannot develop some misteries, the appearance of which gave rise to those quæries, which were made the contents of a letter. Do not my dear Doctor tease your Mistress in this manner - much less your Wife, when you get one._ The first will pout, _& the other may scold - a friend will bear with it, especially one who assures you, with as much truth as I do, that he is sincere. Adieu. G:oWashington James McHenry Esq.r [autograph address leaf:] "(Private) / James McHenry Esq.r / Baltimore. [Docketing in McHenry's hand:] "Aug 15th 1782 / Washington Historical Background: The best guess at Washington's cryptic second line is: "I. wished for my [Peace of Mind] . resolving (like a man in the last agony) not to follow the trade & occupation of a G[eneral] any more." His letter of "March last" and McHenry's letters of July 26 and August 3 are not listed in the Washington Papers, so we don't know what this was really about. But we do know that Washington was eagerly awaiting the final peace treaty and the opportunity to return to his private life at Mount Vernon. To help describe this point of the war, the following excerpt is taken from another letter Washington wrote to McHenry, a month prior, on July 18, 1782: "At present, we are inveloped in darkness; and no Man, I believe, can foretell all the consequences which will result from the Naval action in the West Indies. to say no worse of it, it is an unfortunate affair. and if the States cannot, or will not rouse to more vigorous exertions, they must submit to the consequences. Providence has done much for us in this contest, but we must do something for ourselves, if we expect to go triumphantly through with it." Later, as president, Washington sought McHenry's advice and help finding candidates for important posts. In 1796, Washington selected McHenry to be the nation's third Secretary of War. James McHenry (1753-1816) was born in Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland, and educated in Dublin. He emigrated to America in 1771 and studied medicine with Dr. Benjamin Rush in Philadelphia. McHenry volunteered for military service on behalf of the colonies when hostil
