Philadelphia: 1782. Copper engraving, with original hand-colouring. A "References to the British Lines" is set within a scroll in the upper right-hand corner. At lower center is a lengthy key or "Explanation" of the battlefield, which identifies and describes eighteen key locations on the battlefield. The explanation is set within a rococo frame, which in turn is enclosed by the flags of the United States and France, cannon, arms, and other spoils of battle. Some minor creases on verso from previous folding, restoration to margins beyond platemark. 25 1/2 x 17 7/16 inches. 27 x 18 7/8 inches. "A cornerstone document of our national heritage" (Nebenzahl, Atlas, p. 184.) Within three days of the British surrender on October 19, 1781, Major Sebastian Bauman, an American artillery officer, took the field and carefully surveyed the terrain and battle positions at Yorktown. A native of Germany, Bauman had emigrated to America after service in the Austrian army. During the Revolution, he served in the campaigns in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and was in command of the artillery at West Point, before joining Washington at the siege of Yorktown. Bauman spent six days surveying the battlefield at Yorktown. His manuscript draft was quickly sent to Philadelphia where it was engraved by Robert Scot to be sold by subscription. The map was advertised in The New York Packet and the American Advertiser in March 1782: Major Bauman of the New York, or Second Regiment of Artillery, Has Drawn a Map of the Investment of York and Gloucester, in Virginia. Shewing how those posts were besieged in form, by the allied army of America and France; the British lines of defence, and the American and French lines of approach, with part of York River, and the British ships as they then appeared sunken in it before Yorktown; and the whole encampment in its vicinity./ This Map, by desire of many gentlemen, will shortly be published in Philadelphia, in order that the public may form an idea of that memorable siege. Those gentlemen who incline to become subscribers will apply to the printer hereof; where the conditions will be shewn, and subscription money be received. This was the only detailed battle plan of Yorktown published in America. As a participant for the winning side, Bauman was able to spend more time surveying the field than the British engineers who were bottled up in Yorktown. Thus he was able to include an extensive area to the south of the town that does not appear on the best British plans, such as those published by Faden and Des Barres. The location of the French and American positions is necessarily more detailed and informed. As it appeared in print before the British plans, it was the first survey of the Siege of Yorktown made available to the American public. Margaret Pritchard notes that the plan was also an effective piece of propaganda: "In addition to providing substantial detailed military information, this map is also interesting for its artistic composition. Yorktown, Gloucester Point, and troop positions are confined primarily to the top half of the map. The lower half is dominated by the explanation that is embellished with ornaments of war. The shape of the scrollwork cartouche surrounding the explanation, with flags and banners that thrust upward from both sides, force the eye to the center of the image. Here, in an open space, is the very heart of the map, "The field where the British laid down their Arms." It is this field that is omitted from all of the British battle plans of Yorktown. Bauman's plan is a legendary rarity which almost never appears on the market. It's scarcity is due to the fact that it was separately-published by subscription only. Relatively few sheets were printed, and very few of those survived. Wheat & Brun locate eight institutional copies, but not one in Virginia. To these, we can add four copies known to us in private American collections. Perhaps Nebenzahl summarized the importance of the map best: "Bauman's splendid map, dedicated to General Washington, reflects his formal European training in topographical engineering. It is the only American survey of the culmination of the great struggle for independence and a cornerstone document of our national heritage." Alexander O. Aliments and goodies of the hall wide world; garment, games, animals human's, superstition and many more. Volume 2 is subdivided in 15 segments and focused the oddities of the earth, springs, winds, tornados, the first breeding of humans, the care of the female gender, "Rites by defunct, rites by match, hunting and many more. The texts allude in the focus of the peoples of Asia, America and Africa. Titlepages lightly blotched, in other respects almost stainless. All over in good condition. Rare.

Rebound in half-calf and marbled paper over boards, raised bands, leather title label to spine. Internally some light browning, first gathering of volume 1 has a light stain to top third of page, second volume has a light stain to head of pages throughout. "Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, Comte de Mirabeau (9 March 1749-2 April 1791) was a French writer, popular orator and statesman...Later during his confinement, he wrote Des Lettres de Cachet et des prisons d'état, published after his liberation (1782). It exhibits an accurate knowledge of French constitutional history skillfully applied in an attempt to show that the system of lettres de cachet was not only philosophically unjust but also constitutionally illegal. It shows, though in a rather diffuse and declamatory form, the application of wide historical knowledge, keen philosophical perception, and genuine eloquence to a practical purpose which was the great characteristic of Mirabeau, both as a political thinker and as a statesman" (Wikipedia)

Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments with red and black morocco labels, red edges, marbled endpapers. The black labels rubbed, small hole near top of spine of vol. 2, but a fine set. Small stamp on versos of half-titles. FIRST EDITION. This was Fourcroy’s first major publication. It is a résumé of the course of seventy lectures that he gave each winter in his laboratory and contains a comprehensive account of all parts of chemistry, including recent work on gases. Fourcroy also included sections concerned with the analysis of animal fluids and solids and their application to medicine. In this first edition Fourcroy did not yet adopt Lavoisier’s theories completely, and he included unbiased accounts of rival theories. Only in the preliminary discourse to the second edition of 1786 did he renounce the phlogiston theory. The book became very popular, running to several later editions and translations. Cole 459. A superb copy in completely original condition of the scarce French version of Rickman's surreptitious account of Cook's third voyage, published the year after the English original. The frontispiece to the first volume is a re-engraved image of Cook's death, entitled "Mort du capitaine Cook a Owhy-hee, Fevrier 1779", one of the earliest representations of Hawaii. Rickman's account is one of the the most significant of the surreptitious accounts of Cook's voyages - the unauthorised accounts published anonymously to avoid repercussions from the Admiralty, who had embargoed the publication of private narratives before the appearance of the official version. Rickman scooped the official version by a full three years, and even this translation, by J.N. Demounier, reached the public a long time before any version of the official narrative was published. This surreptitious account of the third voyage was published anonymously, but was conclusively shown by Judge Howay (Zimmermann's Captain Cook, Toronto, 1930) to have been the work of John Rickman, a lieutenant on the voyage. His description of the voyage, as well as predating the official account, differs from it in many respects - particularly regarding the death of Cook, for which this is a prime source. Edition Originale dédiée au Grand-Duc de Toscane Pietro Leopoldo, de ce recueil de textes du mathématicien italien Pietro Ferroni (1744-1825). L'ouvrage est divisé en 10 chapitres traitant de différents sujets mathématiques ("De Binomio Neutoniano", "Applicatio Calculi Infinitesimalis", "Paradoxon Calculi Summatorii", "De Radicibus Unitatis", "De Logarithmis", etc.). Il est illustré de 2 planches dépliantes hors texte. Pietro Ferroni "mathematico regio" était professeur de mathématiques à Pisa et à Florence. Le Grand-Duc de Toscane, Pietro Leopoldo, s'assura son concours pour la réalisation d'importants travaux d'ingénierie et d'hydraulique. On lui doit entre autres des travaux sur le pont S. Trinita de Florence. Il s'intéressait également à l'économie politique. Ferroni a publié un autre ouvrage de mathématiques ("De Calculo Integralium"- 1792) et quelques mémoires parus dans des recueils périodiques, dont un texte économique ("Essame di alcuni passi della meditazione sulla economia politica del Conte P. Exceptionnel exemplaire avec : - la véritable deuxième édition en très grande partie originale en deux parties : les tomes I à IV, datés 1782, reprennent la quasi-totalité de la première édition parue en 2 vol. en 1781 en y intercalant des textes nouveaux ; les tomes V à VIII, datés 1783, donnent une très grande majorité de textes nouveaux. Cette deuxième édition contient ainsi au total 674 chapitres contre 264 pour la première. - le complément en 4 tomes IX à XII, daté de 1788, à l'adresse (fictive) d'Amsterdam. Des contrefaçons nombreuses existent et l'édition originale n'a pas été formellement identifiée ; mais notre exemplaire est identique à celui de la BnF décrit dans l'édition moderne de référence publiée en 1995 au Mercure de France et établie sous la direction de Jean-Claude Bonnet (Cf. pp. CLXV à CLXVIII) ; cette édition à 24 lignes à la page, au nombre important de pages par vol. (384, 366, 376, 368), avec une erreur de pagination à la p. 241 du tome XII, a toutes les apparences d'une toute première édition, sinon la première.

Bien avant Claude Bernard, il attribuait un rôle prépondérant à l'art d'observer dans la recherche scientifique. Ses recherches expérimentales et sa philosophie ont exercé une influence profonde sur les naturalistes des XVIIIème et XIXème siècles. Des pages brunies, deux coiffes élimées, mais bon exemplaire.

J'ai l'honneur de vous envoier, Monsieur, un mémoire pour lequel le Sieur Teurterie Descerisiers négociant à Grandville, réclame une somme de 87 500 h (?) pour divers secours tant en vivres qu'en effets de marine que son père a procurés dans des tems difficiles à l'isle Royale et à l'isle St Jean. Il y a joint les certificats qui constatent sa réclamation. M. de Sartine, auquel il s'adressa en 1776, crut qu'il étoit juste de le dédommager, au moins en partie, des pertes que son père avoit essuiées, quoiqu'elles ne fussent pas occasionnées directement par le Service du Roy ; et il écrivit à M. de Clugny, en lui demandant, pour ce négociant, l'entrepôt du tabac à Grandville. Cette place aiant été donnée a un autre particulier, le Sieur Teurterie m'a prié de vous adresser, de nouveau son mémoire et de vous recommander la demande qu'il fait d'une indemnité, soit en contrats, soit en une pension reversible à sa mère. Il m'a paru susceptible de faveur ; mais je ne puis que m'en remettre à ce que vous jugerés convenable de décider. Lassone (1717-1788), nommé premier médecin en 1775 auprès de la reine et de Louis XVI, pensa que le poids des attributions dont il était alors investi, telles que l'examen des remèdes secrets, la surveillance des eaux minérales, la police sanitaire, l'étude des épidémies, était trop importante pour être examinées et jugées par un seul homme ; il provoqua la formation de la Société Royale de médecine (1776), puissant organisme essentiellement chargé d'enquêter sur les épidémies survenant dans le royaume, de les identifier et de les étudier, et surtout de proposer un plan de lutte pour les combattre et à cette fin de composer et de distribuer une trousse de remèdes adéquats. Les prescriptions de ces remèdes sont décrits dans cette ouvrage. L'Arrêt se trouve relié en tête. 1 coiffe usée.

Suite à l'expulsion des Jésuites en 1762, les parlements s'emparèrent de la direction de l'instruction publique. Nommé président de la Chambre des Enquêtes, Rolland d'Erceville fut un des commissaires chargés de la réorganisation et de l'administration des collèges de l'Université. Son Compte-rendu des papiers trouvés chez les Jésuites fit grand bruit tandis qu'il publiait dans le même temps un Plan d'Etudes (1769), où il entend réformer l'enseignement secondaire : enseignement spécifique de l'histoire, enseignement élargi de la langue nationale, distinction des sciences de la philosophie, remplacement des ecclésiastiques par des professeurs laïques, création d'un séminaire pour la formation des maîtres. Enveloppé dans la proscription du Parlement, Rolland d'Erceville mourut sur l'échafaud en 1794 à l'âge de soixante ans avec plusieurs de ses collègues. First edition: a lovely copy in a well preserved contemporary binding. This important narrative account of Cook's third voyage was an unauthorised publication which landed its author Ellis in trouble. Surgeon's mate and talented amateur artist, William Ellis sailed first on the Discovery and later on the Resolution. Despite the prohibition by the Admiralty of the publication of any unauthorised account of the voyage, Ellis, in financial straits, sold his narrative to a London publisher for fifty guineas, thus earning the condemnation of Sir Joseph Banks, who wrote to him in January 1782 that 'I fear it will not in future be in my power to do what it might have been, had you asked and followed my advice'.Ellis' narrative is particularly detailed on Alaska, the Northwest Coast, and Hawaii, and the attractive engraved plates, after Ellis' own drawings, include eight of Hawaii, two of Alaska, and three of the Northwest Coast, among the earliest published of these areas; Choris' famous views did not appear until almost forty years later. Berne, 1782 Octavo; a lovely untrimmed copy in stiff paper boards, with manuscript spine label, some wear and minor worming to upper board. An attractive copy of the first French edition, and extremely scarce. 'Both French editions are of great rarity and are of interest not only on that account but because of the additional matter which they contain...' (Holmes).
In any early edition, Zimmermann's narrative of Cook's third voyage is one of the scarcest of all the Cook voyage accounts. It was the first description of the third voyage to appear on the continent, and as one of two accounts published three years before the official account it may be the first description of the voyage. It includes an eye-witness account of Cook's death, and his account is 'valuable for his lower-deck impressions of the character of Cook...' (Beaglehole).
'Zimmermann, a native of Speyer, was coxswain in the Discovery. From the start of the voyage he determined to keep a shorthand journal of the voyage and to retain it, despite the instructions... demanding the surrender of all logs and journals... His account is by no means free from errors, but it has an ingenuousness and charm which differentiate it from the other accounts. His appreciation of Cook's character deserves to rank with that of Samwell' (Holmes). Four pages in this edition contain Zimmermann's long description of the Tasmanian Aborigines, with an interesting note in passing suggesting how many copies of the "Resolution and Adventure" medal, minted for distribution on the second voyage, were actually still available for distribution during the third voyage: on one day alone, Cook gave copies to eight or nine Aborigines, 'which had such a good effect that the next day 49 more came to visit... some of whom received the same presents as their earlier compatriots, but none of whom was willing to come aboard the ships...'.
First published in German the previous year, the first French edition is significantly expanded with the inclusion of the "Abrégé de la Vie du Capitaine Cook" (pp. 118-172) and the "Notes" (pp. 173-200). As this section of the French edition attests, the work was written with the active assistance of Georg and Johann Forster, who had spent the year following the first news of Cook's death producing articles on their former Captain, including four substantial contributions to the Göttingisches Magazin (which Georg edited with his compatriot Georg Christoph Lichtenberg). Johann was also heavily involved in preparing the German-language edition of another surreptitious account of the third voyage, John Rickman's Journal.

Carlos IV, en vista de los servicio de Valladares, le otorga el puesto de notario público en Madrid y en todo el reino, con todos los poderes del puesto. Obedecimiento en Madrid el 17 de junio de 1783. Interesante documento demostrando el procedimiento de registro de un nombramiento real de menor rango. Algún desgaste en los dobleces. A ROYAL ORDER IN FAVOR OF LEANDRO DE VALLADARES OF THE VILLA OF MAYORGA, THIRD MAGISTRATE, FROM CARLOS IV, EL PARDO, 19 FEBRUARY 1782. Manuscript, 1 l., double folio, woodcut signature stamp of the king and certification by the secretaries; on the verso, the appropriate obediences. Some wear at folds. Charles IV, in light of the services of Valladares, grants him the post of notary public in Madrid and throughout the realm. The order was obeyed in Madrid on 17 June 1783. An interesting document demonstrating the procedure for registration of a lower rank appointment.

One leaf has a lower corner torn out effecting 9 lines of text. The binding's clasps have worn the preliminary and end leaves, without loss of text. Early full leather binding; with remains of the original clasp mountings. Slight loss to top 1" of spine. Early pencil ownership of Abraham P. Moyers. August Gottlieb Spangenberg (1704-1792) was Count Zinzendorf's successor, and bishop of the Moravian Brethren. In 1728 Count Zinzendorf visited Jena, and Spangenberg made his acquaintance. In 1730 he visited the Moravian colony at Herrnhut. A "Collegium Pastorale Practicum" for the care of the sick and poor was in consequence founded by him at Jena, which the authorities at once broke up as a "Zinzendorfian institution." Later, his free lectures in Jena met with much acceptance, and led to an offer from Gotthilf Francke of the post of assistant professor of theology and superintendent of schools connected with his orphanage at Halle. He accepted the offer, and took up his duties in September 1732. But differences between the Pietists of Halle and himself soon became apparent. He found their religious life too formal, external and worldly, and they could not sanction his comparative indifference to doctrinal correctness and his incurable tendency to separatism in church life. After some false starts Spangenberg went to Herrnhut and found amongst the Moravians his life-work. He became its theologian, its apologist, its statesman and corrector, through sixty long years. For the first thirty years (1733-1762) his work was mainly devoted to the superintendence and organization of the extensive missionary enterprises of the body in Germany, England, Denmark, the Netherlands, Suriname, Georgia and elsewhere. During the second half of this missionary period of his life he superintended as bishop the churches of Pennsylvania. There he defended the Moravian colonies against the Indians, became their apologist against the attacks of the Lutherans and the Pietists, and did much to moderate the mystical extravagances of Count Zinzendorf. In 1777 Spangenberg was commissioned to draw up the Idea Fidei Fratrum, or "Compendium of the Christian Faith of the United Brethren" , which became the accepted declaration of the Moravian belief. As compared with Zinzendorf's own writings, this book exhibits the finer balance and greater moderation of Spangenberg's nature, while those offensive descriptions of the relation of the sinner to Christ in which the Moravians at first indulged are almost absent from it. - From Wiki. Volume 2 still has it's red title block, which is missing on the other three volumes. The leather shows wear on all edges and volume one has the front board loose, volume three has both boards loose and volume four has the back board loose. The text blocks are all sound and the pages clear and clean. A bookplate in the front of volumes 3 and 4 bears the name David Campbell. A very good candidate for rebinding.. Leather. Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society London: 1782 FIRST EDITION of one of several scientific treatises by Benjamin Thompson, a native of Massachusetts who fought on the British side in the War of Independence and was knighted by George III. He later joined the court of the Elector of Bavaria and rose to become head of the elector’s army. “Professionally, Thompson was a soldier of fortune. His first serious scientific study was to determine the optimal position of firing vents in cannon and to measure the velocity of the shot as a function of the composition of gunpowder. He used a ballistic pendulum method first introduced by Benjamin Robins. Thompson’s long paper on this subject, published in 1781, won him fellowship in The Royal Society of London. Throughout his life he intermittently pursued his studies on the force of gunpowder. In 1797 he published the description of a device for proving gunpowder, which was generally accepted as the standard method by both the British and the Bavarian armies. It was during his investigations of cannon that he was impressed by the large amount of heat generated in cannon barrels by the explosion of gunpowder even when no ball was being fired. Edition Originale (exemplaire de seconde émission à la date de 1782) de cet ouvrage très rare du musicographe lyonnais C. R. Brijon (né vers 1720) qui présente "plusieurs aperçus intéressants et curieux" (Larousse). L'auteur y développe sa théorie pédagogique selon laquelle la musique participe au développement de l'intelligence, avec de nombreuses observations physiologiques sur le cerveau, la voix et l'oreille rédigées avec l'aide d'un médecin, le docteur Julien. Il avait notamment inventé un appareil appelé "Aurillette" servant à favoriser l'apprentissage des notes de musique, et qu'il vendait chez lui. Conçu initialement pour être accompagné d'un volume d'exercices gravés en taille douce, l'ouvrage semble également avoir été diffusé sous forme de texte seul comme c'est le cas ici. Relié à l'époque sans mention de tomaison, notre exemplaire présente un collationnement identique à celui de la plupart des exemplaires que nous avons pu localiser dans les bibliothèques publiques. Exemplaire de seconde émission, avec le faux-titre et le titre réimprimés à la date de 1782. Quelques rousseurs et brunissures. Mention manuscrite d'appartenance à "Baussand professeur de musique à Lyon rue Lanterne (an 1868)".

FIRST EDITION of one of several scientific treatises by Benjamin Thompson, a native of Massachusetts who fought on the British side in the War of Independence and was knighted by George III. He later joined the court of the Elector of Bavaria and rose to become head of the elector?s army. "Professionally, Thompson was a soldier of fortune. His first serious scientific study was to determine the optimal position of firing vents in cannon and to measure the velocity of the shot as a function of the composition of gunpowder. He used a ballistic pendulum method first introduced by Benjamin Robins. Thompson?s long paper on this subject, published in 1781, won him fellowship in The Royal Society of London. Throughout his life he intermittently pursued his studies on the force of gunpowder. In 1797 he published the description of a device for proving gunpowder, which was generally accepted as the standard method by both the British and the Bavarian armies. It was during his investigations of cannon that he was impressed by the large amount of heat generated in cannon barrels by the explosion of gunpowder even when no ball was being fired. LAF 2 pagine in 4 con indirizzo anch'esso autografo in quarta pagina. Datata Roma 9 ottobre 1782 e diretta a Fortunata Fantastici a Firenze. Nel 1782 Monti, mentre si trova a Firenze in casa di Fortunata Sulgher Fantastici, incontra una giovane donna di nome Carlotta della quale si innamora immediatamente, comincia cosi' a scrivere struggenti lettere che testimoniano il suo sentimento. In questa confidenziale missiva il poeta non perde occasione per sottolineare ancora una volta il suo amore per Carlotta: -... non ho passato per cosi' dire un momento senza ricordarmi di voi, e di lei. Oh se vi fossero note le tempre del mio cuore... Non le intendo neppure io. Intendo solo che Carlotta mi e' necessaria, e che io l'amo incredibilmente. Custodisco il cerchietto ch'ella mi diede come la cosa piu' preziosa ch'io m'abbia e quando son solo lo bacio come la reliquia d'un qualche Santo...-.

Les planches sont très belles et présentent diverses étapes de l ' élevage des moutons : tonte , accouchement , soins divers ... Ce collaborateur de Buffon est né en 1716 à Montbard . Son travail sur les moutons débute dès 1766 . La France est alors tributaire de l ' Espagne pour la laine . Daubenton crée lui - même une race française qui rivalise rapidement avec les mérinos d ' Espagne . Son " Instruction " était destinée aux paysans un peu instruit , et il prit soin de mettre à leur portée la partie de ses travaux qui leur serait le plus utile . On l ' appelait " le Berger Daubenton " .
