Gibeon, gedruckt und verlegt bey Kasimir Lauge (d. i. Berlin, Vieweg), o. Sammlung meist satirischer Charakterbilder zeitgenössischer Schriftsteller, u. a. Signatur. Sauberes Exemplar. Goed. IV 1, 823, 61a. Jacob/Majakowski 371. Köhring 71. Walker's ideas on elocution continued to be influential throughout the 19th century, especially when set out in 545 rules prefixed to his authoritative Critical Pronouncing Dictionary (1791), and by the end of the 19th century his name had become a byword for linguistic correctness. 2 volumes, octavo (218 × 133 mm). Contemporary tree calf, smooth spines gilt in compartments, red and green morocco labels, sides and turn-ins with gilt roll border, marbled endpapers, pale yellow edges. 3 folding engraved plates. Later ownership inscriptions to early blanks. Corners bumped, one neatly repaired, a very handsome set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

ALBERT
(Prince, 1819-1861, Consort of Queen Victoria) ALS !Your devoted nephew Albert!, in German with translation, to his father!s sister Grand Duchess ANNA FEODOROVNA ,
|
(1781-1860, born Princess Juliane [Julie] of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, wife of Constantine, elder brother of Tsar Nikolai I) at La Boissiere, Geneva, saying he is !horrified to see that I still owe you an answer to your last kind letter. It is very good of you to suggest candidates for the post of tutor to our children ! (Vicky and Bertie), that he and the Queen need to choose soon but !I hardly believe we would appoint someone from abroad. Today we go back to Windsor which will be a cold sort of pleasure ... Good Alexander Mensdorff !, (1813-1871, his cousin and son of the Grand Duchess! sister Princess Sophie, !is now back in Lisbon, where he has not been made welcome, and where they would like to be rid of Colonel Wylde !, Albert!s equerry. !A certain Herr Dietz of ancient memory would rather see the Rhone dry up than his influence diminish. Ferdinand !, (1816-1885, King Consort of Portugal from 1837 and another cousin and nephew), !is thirty years old and is not supposed still to have a tutor!, 4 sides 8vo., with original autograph envelope, annotated in German by the Grand Duchess !Albert. View of Lisbon and Dietz! and ! Verbrennen ! (! to be burnt ), Osborne, 18th December 1846 The Queen and Prince Albert had first occupied Osborne, with its modern comforts designed by the Prince, in 1845. His difficulties in getting a single officer of state responsible for heating at Windsor are well known. For the search for a tutor, see especially Robert Rhodes James, !Albert Prince Consort!, 1983, which draws on the Royal Archives. Victoria had been much struck by her cousin Alexander Mensdorff, shortly before Albert!s second visit in 1839. He was then a young cavalry officer in the Austrian army, later ambassador to Russia. In Portugal, Ferdinand!s reactionary policy in the face of civil war caused mixed feelings in Great Britain. Albert tried to counsel him by sending Mensdorff, then Wylde, but as this letter shows had little thanks for his pains. No doubt Herr Dietz is Ferdinand!s tutor from Coburg days. A most interesting letter in Albert!s firm clear hand with the German form of his signature. See SD9234, Anna Feodorovna.

PRESTEL, Maria Catherine
The Holy Family, after a design by Hans Brosamer.
|
: Prestel, 1781 - N.P. Print (7 3/4 x 6 inches) mounted on a contemporary bordered frame by the artist (13 1/4 x 10 inches). Maria Catherine Prestel was the daughter of Holl, the engraver. She was a student of Prestel's and later became his wife. This print is in the manner developed by Prestel. It is an aquatint print done in the chiaroscuro manner look like an old master drawing. This example, because of its intricate engraving, was done with two plates but looks like many more were used. Mari separated from her husband in 1786 and moved to London with her daughter wher she continued in her trade. She died in 1794. Only seventy-three signed pla are attributed to her. Voss. The poem, an important reference for the Eleusinian Mysteries, was discovered in a medieval manuscript in 1777, and edited by Ruhnkenius for publication in 1780. A printing error omitted 21 lines, so that edition was withdrawn (vide Richardson) and replaced by this 1781 printing. Most often seen is the reissue later in the same year, with a new title page (dated 1782) and a reprint of two long critical letters by Ruhnkenius added at the end. CONTINENTAL CONGRESS
Instructions for Privateers
|
1781. (CONTINENTAL CONGRESS). Instructions for Privateers. By the United States in Congress Assembled, April 7, 1781. Be it ordained, and it is hereby ordained by the United States in Congress assembled, that the following Instructions be observed by the captains or Commanders of private armed vessels, commissioned by letters of marque or general reprisals, or otherwise by the authority of the United States in Congress, assembled. [Philadelphia: Printed by David C. Claypoole, 1781]. Broadside, single sheet of laid paper measuring 8 by 13-1/2 inches, printed on recto, uncut. $3800. Scarce original 1781 resolution by the Continental Congress, America's conclusive and completely amended response to the Prohibitory Act of 1775, outlining America's decision to call for armed seizure of British ships by private vessels, an action first formulated by the Congress in March 1776 and reaffirmed in the Declaration of Independence's refusal to obey a king who "has plundered our seas! cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world." In August 1775 the British Crown labeled the American colonies "in open and avowed rebellion"-the first official recognition of imminent revolution. Within months Parliament passed the Prohibitory Act of 1775, creating a final irredeemable fracture between Britain and America. The act prohibited all trade and commerce with the colonies, identifying all trading vessels as "the ships and effects of open enemies" and encouraging enforcement by granting British warships the right to "seize and take" the property of trading vessels and their goods. News of the royal proclamation and November's Prohibitory Act did not reach American shores until the first months of 1776. Delegates of the Continental Congress responded on March 23rd by stating that "whereas the parliament of Great Britain hath lately passed an Act, affirming these colonies to be in open rebellion, forbidding all trade and commerce with the inhabitants thereof! [It is] resolved, that the inhabitants of these colonies be permitted to fit out armed vessels to cruize [sic] on the enemies of these United Colonies. Resolved that all ships and other vessels! belonging to any inhabitant or inhabitants of Great Britain, taken on the high seas ! shall be deemed and adjudged to be lawful prize." John Adams, in a letter sent to General Horatio Gates that same day, praised the action of Congress, writing, "I know not whether you have seen the Act of Parliament called the restraining act, or prohibitory act, or piratical act, or plundering act, or act of independency, for by all these titles is it called. I think the most apposite is the act of independence, for king, Lords and Commons have united in sundering this country from that, I think forever. It is a complete dismemberment of the British Empire. It throws 13 colonies out of the royal protection, levels all distinctions, and makes us independent" (Douglas IX:864). The initial March 23rd resolution was printed in the Pennsylvania Gazette on March 27, 1776. When Congress later made revisions on May 2, 1780, that document was presumably not printed until almost one year later, as its first issue contains a printed one-line addendum dated March 17, 1781. Thus the 1780 amended "Instructions for Privateers" that was published, like this, by Philadelphia printer David Claypool, presumably gives it an issue "date of 1781, or later" (Evans 17021). According to the Library of Congress, the 1780 "Instructions for Privateers" was likely printed at the end of April 1781. It was in the same month, on the 7th, that the Continental Congress acted on further revisions, incorporating the proposed amendments of a three-member committee into this resolution, including "instructions for the masters of letters of marque"-documents commonly used to commission privateers. Ultimately the Continental Congress commissioned over 1,000 privateering vessels to assist the Revolutionary War effort. This is the scarce printing of the April 7, 1781 "Instructions to Privateers," the defining document by Congress that contains conclusive revisions to all earlier resolutions. Signed in type by Charles Thomson as Secretary of Congress. Evans 17384. See Evans 17021. See Ford 276. Very faint foldlines not affecting text. An exceptional uncut, fine Revolutionary document.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

(CAPELLEN TOT DEN POLL, Joan Derk van der).
Aan het volk van Nederland.
|
One of the first editions of the most famous Dutch pamphlet of the 18th century (Lingen, in the house of Prof. F.A. v.d. Marck?), 1781. 8vo. Modern paper wrappers, with the title photocopied on front cover. 76 pp. (Collation: A-I4, K2). (1) One of the first editions of this famous pamphlet Aan het Volk van Nederland [To the People of the Netherlands], dated Ostende, 3rd of September 1781, vigorously opposed to the House of Orange in general and to Stadholder William V in particular, while advocating the establishment of a Dutch Republic independent of the House of Orange, a take over by independent burghers and a free press. In the night of 25 to 26 September 1781 the pamphlet was distributed from blinded coaches in many Dutch cities. Soon the Dutch people became acquainted with this anonymous pamphlet, which immediately made a profound impression and would go down in history as the leading programme of the Dutch patriots. The States-General promptly banned it and issued a reward of 14,000 guilders for anyone who would name the author or printer. Other authorities followed suit. However, another 110 years were to pass before the author was unmasked: Joan Derk van der Capellen tot den Pol (1741-1784). The pamphlet was soon translated into English, German and French. It is not completely clear yet which edition (of the three or four earliest editions can be regarded the first. Our copy has the same collation (A-I4, K2), fingerprint(A2: ely; K1: e), and variant on p. 2 (A1v), line 21 'Lieden, die onder ...') as in the first copy listed in the catalogue of teh Royal Library, The Hague. The variant on p. 42, line 5 ('landggenoten') is identical with Knuttel 19865. On the first page (p.2, A1v) an indentation of 3 lines at the beginning (for the initial 'I') in stead of 2 in the available reproductions of the first edition.Extra added are three works relating to Johan Derk van der Capellen: (2) A panegyric for Joan Derk van der Capellen pronounced on 16 August 1784 in the Bethlehem Church at Zwolle during a commemorative service on the occasion of Van der Capellen's death by the French minister at Zwolle Isaac du Puy; (2) a translation by Joan Derk van der Capellen from the French into Dutch of a religious treatise on Psalm 5 by the same Isaac du Puy; and (3) a pamphlet, probably written by Joan Derk van der Capellen directed to the burghers of the Province of Overijssel. Good copy.- (Some pages misbound).- ((3) and (4) unbound, (3): first leaf loose). (1) Knuttel 19865; Loosjes, Een krachtig libel. CAPELLEN TOT DEN POLL, Joan Derk van der).
One of the first editions of the most famous Dutch pamphlet of the 18th century, Aan het volk van Nederland.
|
in the house of Prof. F.A. v.d. Marck?), 1781., (Lingen, - 8vo. 2 (A1v), line 21 'Lieden, die onder .') as in the first copy listed in the catalogue of teh Royal Library, The Hague. BARRINGTON, Daines (1727-1800)
Miscellanies
|
- London: Printed by J. Nichols, 1781. Quarto. (10 1/2 x 8 inches). Two engraved portraits, two engraved maps (one folding), and five tables (one folding). Contemporary tree calf, spine in six compartments with raised bands, the bands flanked by gilt fillets, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, red-stained edges. A very fine copy of the first edition of this fascinating compilation of articles, including an important early work on navigation to the North Pole, a narrative of a voyage to the Northwest coast of America and one of the earliest English accounts of Mozart. "Contains a curious collection of articles, including Mourelle's Journal of a voyage in 1775, to explore the coast of America, northward of California, by the second pilot of the fleet, Don Francisco Antonio Mourelle, in the King's schooner, called the Sonora, and commanded by Don Francisco de la Bodega. This is the first edition of the only contemporary account in English of this important voyage fitted out by the Viceroy of Mexico to explore the northwest coast of America. Mourelle served as secretary to the Viceroy and later wrote another work relating to the voyage of the frigate Princessa to the Pacific Ocean, in 1780-81. His account was used by Captain James Cook on his third Voyage. Also included is Tracts on the possibility of approaching the North Pole, in which are laid down the results of numerous inquiries addressed to whaling captains, especially to those who frequented the coasts of Labrador and Greenland. The whole comprises a compilation of extraordinary value for the geography of the northern regions, including Alaska" (Hill). This fascinating assemblage also contains natural history essays (with one on the Linnaean system) and four essays on geniuses of the day, including one of the first accounts in English of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with a fine oval portrait of the young prodigy. "Daines Barrington presented a particularly vivid picture of the childhood genius to his colleagues at the Royal Society in London [first published in book form here]. He described Mozart's ability to improvise operative music, singing and accompanying himself at the keyboard, to imaginary Italian texts on the subjects of love and betrayal. He also placed before the boy an unfamiliar duet: without the slightest hesitation the lad assigns the alto part to his father, sings the soprano himself, realizes the figured bass and throws in the violin parts as necessary. This feat involves reading several different clefs simultaneously, the difficulty of which Barrington attempted to explain to his musically untrained colleagues by comparing it to the simultaneous reading of several poems, each possessing its own character, expression, and declamatory rules, and each written in a different alphabet. Barrington's report illustrates the fascination that the young boy engendered not only in concert audiences, but also in the scientific world" (Mozart and the Keyboard Culture of His Time, an online exhibit by the Cornell University Library Division of Rare Books and Manuscripts (Ithaca, New York: 2002)). Hill (2004) 56; Howes B177; Lada-Mocarski 34; Sabin 3628; Streeter Sale 2445. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Cioranescu, 39501..

The Siege of Sinope. A tragedy. As it is acted at the Theatre-Royal in Covent Garden.
|
Dublin : Printed for Sam. Price, Wm. Watson … (and ten others), 1781 ?FIRST IRISH EDITION, pp viii,(2), 61,(1, blank), 12mo, recent wrappers : very good. Stratman 522 : he also lists a similar edition, same imprint, of 71-pp - presumably in error. Mrs. Frances Brooke (1724-89), friend of Samuel Johnson and Fanny Burney, chiefly remembered as Canada's first novelist for her works, The History of Julia Mandeville (1763) and The History of Emily Montague, written while she and her chaplain-husband were in Quebec. Her tragedy, based on Santi's opera Mitridate a Sinope, received mixed reviews. Perhaps, the most telling comment on the play was recorded by Hannah More in an anecdote about Samuel Johnson : Mrs. B. having repeatedly desired Johnson to look over her new play … before it was acted, he always found means to evade it ; at last she pressed him so closely that he actually refused to do it, and told her that she herself … would be able to see if there was anything amiss as well as he could. ‘But, sir,’, said she, ‘I have no time. I have already so many irons in the fire.’ ‘Why then, Madam’, said he (quite out of patience), ‘the best thing I can advise you to do is, to put your tragedy along with your irons.’ (ODNB).

Johnson Samuel
LIVES OF THE MOST EMINENT ENGLISH POETS; With Critical Observations on Their Works
|
London: for C. Bathurst, et al, 1781. 4 volumes. The First London edition, first authorized edition, first seperate edition. Portrait of Johnson by Joshua Reynolds as frontispiece in the first volume. 8vo, contemporary tree calf with gilt fillet lines surrounding the covers, the sines with plain calf backs. vii, 480; iii, 471; iii, 462; iii, 505. A very good, handsome and honest copy, rehinged incorporating the original spine panels and without labels, the text block clean and sound throughout.. FIRST LONDON EDITION, FIRST AUTHORIZED EDITION, FIRST SEPERATE EDITION of this masterwork of literature. It took Johnson four years to write these lives, and much of their charm lies in the anecdotes and reminiscences which the author was able to provide. He spent much time in the company of men of letters and his retentive memory preserved many of the facts and criticisms which fell from their lips. The work, Johnson's last great labor, was suggested by the Martins at Edinburgh. "The first conception of the booksellers was to begin with the works of Chaucer, but that project was too vast for them, and the first author in their edition was Cowley. The diminution of the scheme is not greatly to be regretted. The poets before Cowley were not so well know to Johnson, and he had no special information on their lives" (Courtney and Smith, p. 130).
