GLASSE, Hannah (1708-1770)].
The Art of Cookery, Made Plain and Easy; Which far exceeds any Thing of the Kind yet published.
      - 8vo (220 x 138 mm). Titel, [6] S., [10] Bl., 397, [24] S. Moderner Halblederband, mit Rückenschild. London, Printed for W. Strahan, J. Rivington and Sons etc., 1778. Exlibris Franz Pollack-Parnau. Bitting 186f.; Vicaire 48; Horn/Arndt 261; Davidson, The Oxford Companion to Food (2006), 340f.; Willan, Kochkünste aus 7 Jh. (1979), 89f. The most famous English cookbook from the Age of Enlightenment in an early edition. Some of the receipes of the book which was written for the common cook to help in the preparation of economical meals were borrowed from other collections. First published in 1747 'The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy' was reissued about twenty times until the end of the century alone. As Hannah Glass did not claim authorship of her book a certain John Hill was suggested the true author until Glasse's identity was finally confirmed by the historian Madeline Hope-Dodds in 1938. - Title and final leaf rather browned and dust-soiled, text slightly browned throughout, minimal stained here and there. - Modern calf, with label on spine.

Revolutionary War
A woman's remarkable Revolutionary War-dated caretaker's journal including the hiring out of slaves to such notables as a wounded Benedict Arnold, Francis Lightfoot Lee, Gouverneur and/or Robert Morris.
From a clearly penned journal kept by Miss Faney Clifton, 14 loose pages, 4.25" x 6.5", some front and verso. On laid paper. [Philadelphia], 1778-1781. Fine condition. On June 19, 1778, the day after the British withdrew from Philadelphia for New York, General George Washington, wrote a letter to General Benedict Arnold beginning, "You are immediately to proceed to Philadelphia and take the command of the troops there..." On July 8, 1778, from Philadelphia, Gen. Arnold wrote to Gen. Washington, in part, "My extreme illness has prevented my writing as often as I wished; at present I am entirely free from the disorder in my stomach; my wound is in a promising way and pretty free from pain..." He was still recovering from the severe leg wound suffered at Saratoga nine months earlier. Arnold was not well enough to return to the field, so Gen. Washington put him in command of Philadelphia. Entry for July 13, 1778: "Hired Jenny to General Arnold at £4-15 pr month hard money." Arnold was living in one of the largest houses in Philadelphia. Built in 1767, it had been the home of Richard Penn, the Lieutenant-Governor of the colony, and a grandson of Pennsylvania's founder, William Penn. From ushistory.org "Arnold lived in the house for about a year beginning in June 1778. He married Philadelphia belle Peggy Shippen the following April, and the two lived here for a few months. It has been established that Shippen was involved in Arnold's treason, and may have encouraged him to betray his country. Arnold hired Joseph Stansbury to redecorate the dining room of the house. According to Stansbury's testimony after the Revolutionary War, he was the courier who carried the messages between Arnold in Philadelphia and Major Andre in New York City." Jenny, identified by first name, was most probably a slave. Slaves and indentured servants , who would usually be listed with their full names, were frequently hired out during wartime to help in homes temporarily occupied by the military, politicians, or businessmen staying in Philadelphia. A receipt is present, Autograph Document Signed "Daedesqui," on verso of a page of entries. In full "Received of Miss Faney Clifton Two Half Joes to Purchase one Barril of muscarde Suggar and a Barril of Coffee which Suggar & Coffee I will send to Miss Faney Clifton by the first opportunity when I shall be arrived in the west indias. Philadelphia March the 30th 1780." A Half Joe was a Portuguese coin worth about £3. One page, possibly the first, begins "Begun houskeeping [sic] December the 10 at which time I had in the house £97-15.10 in hard Money - About 1 hundred and forty dollars Continental. December changed a half Joe..." Other entries include: "July 7 [1778] Bot 3 Pounds of Bohea Tea 19.6 - 3 Pounds of Green Tea 5,5. [July] 10. 1 Barrell of flour." "Recd January 9 1779 of Emanuel Eyres One hundred and Twenty five Pounds for a half years rent due the first of January." Eyres was a shipbuilder. "1779 ... Febry 15 Recd of Mr Lee 102-26 for two Months rent. March 29 recd of Mr Biddle for Muslin 7.11.10½." "1780 Feb 1 hired Jenny to Don Marelles [sic] at 4 Pound pr Month - March 3 Recd of Don Mirelles [sic] one Months Wages for Jenny due the first of March . 4.00" Juan de Miralles was an agent of Spain sent to the United States during the American Revolution to observe the Continental Congress. He became a partner in the trading firm of Robert Morris and Thomas Willing and became a personal friend of Gen. Washington. He was in Philadelphia from August 1777 until his death in May 1780. "July 19. Sam Return'd from Genl Thomson [July] 21 hired Sam to Mr. Hasenclever at 8 pound pr Month Cloaths shoes and stockings." "April 10 hired Jenny to Mr Morris at the rate of 3 Pound hard money to be paid in Continental Money." Possibly Gouverneur Morris. A signer of the Articles of Confederation in 1778 and a Member of the Continental Congress in 1778 and 1779, he moved from New York to Philadelphia in 1779. Possibly Robert Morris, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Member of the Continental Congress 1775-1778. "May 13 Recd of Mr Morris one Months wages for Jenny due the 12. £3.00. June 16 recd one months wages of Mr Morris for Jenny Due the 12." "April ... 15 Recd of Mr. F. Lee one hundred and twenty Pounds for the rooms &c" Undoubtedly, Francis Lightfoot Lee, Member of the Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia, 1775-1779, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. "Dec ... 15 Let the rooms furnished and use of the servants to Mr & Mrs Lee & Mr Smith at the rate of Seven hundred and forty pounds pr year." Both Francis Lightfoot Lee and his wife Rebecca lived in Philadelphia while he served in Congress.

The imprint is false; printed for Merkus's widow in Leipzig Leipziger Messkatalog".

A less than good copy. Third edition of this eighteenth–century masterpiece of prose and forerunner of the modern novel of ideas. This edition was edited by Silva de Eça's son, who made many changes. It is the first to contain the "Carta sobre a fortuna" (pp. 326-68), which Silva de Eca had left in manuscript. A native of Sao Paulo, Silva de Eça spent most of his adult life in Portugal. This work on the themes of Ecclesiastes is his principal work, and one of the few notable prose works written by a Brazilian in the latter half of the 18th century. In 1920 Solidonio Leite published a facsimile of the first edition (1752), calling the public's attention to the literary significance of this forgotten classic and re-establishing Silva de Eça's reputation as a man of Brazilian letters. Silva de Eça was the brother of Brazil's first female novelist, Teresa Margarida da Silva e Orta, author of @Aventuras de Diofanes (1752). Borba de Moraes, I, 240; (rev. ed., 1983) I, 283-4; @Período colonial, p. 127. Blake VI, 259. Innocêncio VI, 159. De Jong @400 years of Brazilian literature p. 54. Not located in NUC. Fleury (Joseph)
Tagli policromi a spruzzo. Titolo entro bordura tipografica, testatine e culs-de-lampe istoriati. Bonino, Biografia Medica Piemontese, I, p. 330. Dessaix, La Savoie historique, p. 154.

Andrew Van Rymsdyk John Van Rymsdyk
Museum Britannicum, Being an Exhibition of a Great Variety of Antiquities and Natural Curiosities, Belonging to That Noble and Magnificent Cabinet, The British Museum Illustrated with Curious Prints
[30 full page engravings] [4] [i] ii-xvi, [1] pp 2-84 John van Rymsdyk's lavishly illustrated account of the holdings of the British Museum. Rymsdyk focuses on objects such as the intricate Taylor-Birds' Nest, an Incrustated Scull and Sword, a group of Eggs and a more sinister grouping in the Flagello, Bastinado, and Spanish Dagger. Each full page engraving is accompanied by explanatory text with a dedication and introduction setting out the book's scope. This copy is formerly from the Cardinal Hayes Library, Rare Book Divison via a private collection. The only sign of library ownership is a bookplate on the front paste-down. The book is bound in crimson buckram with gilt lettering on the spine. The binding is very clean and in good order. The illustrations and text are complete but show some wear. The last half dozen plates and the first three are stained. There is offsetting from the images onto the opposite pages. The paper is browned throughout. The title page is missing the top inch - above the words 'Museum Britannicum' and there are tape repairs at the foot of the page where the paper has become delicate. The last page of text is missing a triangle from the bottom corner. This is a wide margined copy and fortunately there is no resultant loss of text, Overall a VERY GOOD binding with GOOD contents. Please contact Modernfirsteditions if you would like more information about this uncommon book. [Publisher: I Moore for The Authors]

Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, in excellent condition on a full, untrimmed sheet. 27 7/8 x 21 7/8 inches. Very rare, one of the finest maps of Dominica ever produced, depicting the French invasion of the island during the Revolutionary War This very finely engraved map depicts the French invasion of Dominica during the Revolutionary War, and captures the nature of this rugged Caribbean isle in great detail. Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful islands of the Caribbean, its intensely mountainous topography and fierce Carib inhabitants long resisted European settlement. The present map shows the island divided into ten parishes, each outlined with its own colour. The old capital of Portsmouth, with its streets laid out, is depicted in the north of the island, while the new captial, Roseau, and the nearby town of Charlotteville appear in the southwest. This area also features numerous fortifications, most notably Fort Cachacrou, that had been hastily built by the British to repel the expected French invasion. The map details anchorages, churches, villages and roads, and the mountains that dominate the island are expressed by finely engraved hactures. The Carib native reservation, which still exists to this day, is depicted on the northeast coast. Importantly, the large inset on the lower left of the map details the French naval invasion of the island which occurred on September 7th, 1778. France had recently declared hostilities on Britain, joining the Revolutionary War, and very much desired to capture Dominica in order to avenge the loss of the island to Britain in 1763. The French dispatched a massive invading force from Martinique under the Marquis de Bouillé, that consisted of almost 5,000 troops. The British line of fortifications that ran from just north of Roseau to Fort Cachacrou is portrayed here in detail. A key explains how the invasion unfolded, and indicated that the British commander, Major Bruce, stood no chance against the overwhelmingly superior force. The British were soon forced to capitulate, and the French, with the support of the mainly Gallic citizenry, remained in firm possession of the island for the next few years. Then, on April 12th, 1782 British Admiral George Romney decisively defeated the main French Caribbean fleet under the Comte de Grasse at the Battle of the Saints, within sight of Dominica's northern tip. While Romney did not land on Dominica, the French defeat ensured that they would be forced to relinquish Dominica to the British in 1784, at the end of the war. Jean Nicolas Buache, the Premier Géographe to Louis XVI, based this map on two works printed in London during the English occupation of the island. As stated on this map, he consulted John Byres's 1766 map which was the first to chart the interior of the island. He also consulted Thomas Jefferys's fine 1775 map of Dominica, which benefited from the results of the first triangulated surveys of the island conducted by the British from 1765 to 1773. RELATION ABRÉGÉE D'UN VOYAGE FAIT DANS L'INTÉRIEUR DE L AMÉRIQUE MÉRIDIONALE. DEPUIS LA COTE DU BRÉSIL & DE LA GUIANE, EN DESCENDANT LA RIVIÈRE DES AMAZONES.
JeanEdme Dufour & Philippe Roux, MAESTRICHT 1778 - 8vo, Front. + XVI + 379 p.+1 (N#) + 1 folding plate and 1 folding map on frontispiece both engraved by J.B.P. Tardieu, some false vertical. folds in map, browning, marbled paper on covers (slight rubbing), green leather title label on spine( some lacks) with gold tooling. Good copy. New curiously augmented edition, containing 60 pages of previously unpublished material, including the important letter from Godin to La Condamine. According to Borba de Moraes this Maastricht edition is more difficult to find than the Paris first edition of 1745. After last fold there is view of a plaza de toros in the town of Cuenca, Peru, where Semiergues, the surgeon of the expedition, was murdered during a popular upheaval against him and against the landmesurers of the Academy of Science. This plate is of special interest in the viewpoint of tauromachy. The most important members of this French expedition were the geographer Charles de La Condamine, the mathematician Louis Godin, the medical doctor and naturalist Joseph de Jussieu, and the mathematician and astronomer Pierre Bouguer. It had as its purpose the measurement of the size of the earth at the equator.Borba de Moraes says: This mission became famous not only for its scientific findings, but also for a series of tragic and picturesque circumstances which attended it, some attributable to chance and others to the conflicting temperaments of the participants . La Condamine's «Relation .» is of great importance, because for the first time the long course of the Amazon was traversed by a man of science capable of making astronomic observations, and determining longitudes.Written in a very lively and picturesque style, the Relation is full of interesting and curious observations. One of La Condamine's preoccupations was to verify the existence of the women known as 'Amazons'.
London Printed for John Stockdale 1794 A New, Much Expanded Edition ADAMS, John. A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America, Against the Attack of M. Turgot in his Letter to Dr. Price, Dated the Twenty-Second Day of March, 1778. In Three Volumes. A New Edition. London: Printed for John Stockdale, 1794. A new, much expanded edition. Three octavo volumes (8 1/4 x 5 1/8 inches; 209 x 130 mm). 8, xxxii, [3]-392, [2, blank]; [2], [1]-451, [1, directions to the binder]; [2], [1]-528, [36, index] pp. Frontispiece portrait in volume I. Full contemporary tree calf, rebacked. Two red morocco spine labels on each volume, lettered in gilt. Boards decoratively ruled in gilt. Top edges brown, others speckled brown. Marbled endpapers. A 2 1/2 inch closed tear to leaf C2 of volume I. Front board of volume III with some slight scuffing. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown of each volume. Some light scattered foxing. Overall a very good, clean set. In 1785 Adams was appointed first U.S. minister to Britain. His three years in London were fruitless in winning trade concessions or putting Anglo-American relations on a friendly basis. Adams used his time to good purpose, however, by getting well acquainted with Thomas Jefferson, U.S. minister to France, and writing A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States (1787). Like Adams' other writings, this work was unpolished and somewhat polemical, but it contained a wealth of information on constitutional theory and was often cited in the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Adams strongly approved of balanced government and praised the British parliamentary system as the "most stupendous fabric of human invention." Sabin 235. HBS 65006. $4,500

Luther, Martin. (1483-1546) - Battier, Friedrich - Theodor Gernler - Biblia Germanica
Biblia, Das ist: Die Gantze Heilige Schrift, Alten und Neuen Testaments, Verteutschet durch Doct. Martin Luther. Herausgegeben durch Friedrich Battier und Theodor Gernler.
Emanuel Thurneysen, Basel 1778 - Handsomely bound in contemporary ornate blind-stamped calf over bevelled wooden boards with decorative brass corner hardware. Thick (4") spine has five raised bands with gilt lettered label. Huge Folio binding contains the Old and New Testaments, Apocrypha, Registers, Commentaries and Notes, with text of the general title printed in red and black, separate New Testament title, double-column text, and adorned throughout with (10) Ten full page engraved Copper Plates. --- The basis for Luther's version of the Old Testament was the Massoretic text as published by Gerson Ben Mosheh at Brescia in 1494. He used also the Septuagint, the Vulgate of Jerome, the Latin translations of the Dominican Sanctes Pagnini of Lucca (1527), and of the Franciscan Sebastian Münster (1534), the "Glossa ordinaria" (a favorite exegetical vade-mecum of Walafried Strabo from the ninth century). The basis for the New Testament was the second edition of Erasmus, published at Basel in Switzerland in 1519. His first edition of the Greek Testament had appeared in 1516, just one year before the Reformation. He derived the text from a few mediaeval MSS. Luther's version is an idiomatic reproduction of the Bible in the very spirit of the Bible. It brings out the whole wealth, force, and beauty of the German language. It is the first German classic, as King James's version is the first English classic. ; [17],688,120,280 pages [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
