Antoine Sartine
Carte Reduite des Cotes Orientales De L'Amerique Septentrionale Contentant Partie du Nouveau Jersey, la Pen-sylvanie, le Mary-land, la Virginie, la Caroline Septentrionale, la Caroline Meridionale et la Georgie . . . 1778
First edition of Sartine's map of the the Atlantic Coast, from the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays to the mouth of the St. John River. The map was prepared by the French Depot De La Marine at the outset of the American Revolution and included in the Neptune americo-septentrionale and was intended for use by the French Navy during the Revolutionary War. While at first blush, the map appears to be a coast chart, in fact, its charm lies as much for what it shows in the interior parts of the Carolinas. The map includes dozens of early roads, forts and towns, as well as excellent detail in locating the various Indian Lands east of the Appalachians. The map includes a tremendous amount of coastal and inland detail, including the location of dozens of churches, with denominations. Annotations include an Assembly of Non-conformists in western North Carolina (Franklinites?), and many other interesting notes. Along the coast, the islands, capes, soundings and other coastal details are provided in tremendous detail. (Paris, 1778) [color: Uncolored, size: 33 x 22 inches, condition: VG+]

Improvements in Education as It Respects the Industrious Classes of the Community, Containing, Among Other Important Particulars, an Account of the Institution for the Education of One Thousand Poor Children, Borough Road, Southwark; and of the New...
Darton and Harvey. Second Hand Joseph Lancaster (25 November 1778-23 October 1838) was an English Quaker, and public education innovator. In 1801 he founded a free elementary school using a variant of the monitorial system. His ideas though were not original as Dr. Andrew Bell had been using a very similar system in Madras referred to as the Madras System of Education. The method of instruction and delivery is recursive, as one student learns the material he or she is rewarded for successfully passing on that information to the next pupil. This method is now commonly known as peer tutoring but the economics of Lancaster's or Bell's methodology is not widely discussed. Lancaster wrote Improvements in Education and later travelled to the United States to lecture and promote his ideas. His headstrong ways and poor money management made for rough times on himself and his schools. One of Lancaster's original schools, funded by royals, still runs under the name of The British and Foreign School Society but it is not known if the same methods used at the founding of the school, under the name The Royal Lancasterian Institution, are still in use today [wikipedia]. 8vo, xvi + 211pp. + list of subscribers + advertisements. Rebound in fine green cloth with paper label on spine, contemporary owner's inscription of title-page, very small library stamp on dedication page, untrimmed, wide margins.

A History of Hypnotism
Cambridge University Press. New Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. Franz Anton Mesmer arrived in Paris from Austria in February 1778 and established a medical practice which hailed him as one of the most remarkable men of his time. His skill lay in his theories and in his use of 'animal magnetism' to cure disease. Mesmer began a school of thought which spread across Europe and America, and enjoyed, at various stages, favour as a respected scientific and medical therapy, and disrepute as the tool of occultists, mystics and charlatans. Dr. Gauld has created a detailed and scholarly history of the phenomena, practice and theory of mesmerism, hypnotism and multiple personality disorder. The book traces the course of the mesmeric and hypnotic movements and gives special attention to the ideas and influence of certain leading figures. It considers the theories which developed to explain the phenomena and the uses and shortcomings of the technique in medical practice. Throughout the book, case histories and anecdotal accounts provide a fascinating insight into this controversial subject. The book also touches on the social and intellectual issues which influenced the progress and development of mesmerism and hypnotism. The work is extensively annotated and referenced. In his epilogue, Gauld discusses modern approaches to hypnotism and multiple personality disorder, and the role of hypnotism in clinical practice, and offers some ideas for understanding these intriguing phenomena. A History of Hypnotism is a wide-ranging and detailed history of the mesmeric and hypnotic movements and is an essential work of reference and scholarship in this field. A fascinating account, this important work will be of interest to psychiatrists, psychologists and medicalhistorians, as well as to the general reader who wishes to learn more about this absorbing topic. Smith, Adam:
An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. Second Edition.
London, printed for W.Strahan; and T.Cadell, in the Strand, 1778.. (8), 510; (8), 589, (1) SS. 4°. Zeitgenössische Ganzldr.bde.mit roten Rückenschildchen.. Goldsmith 11663; Grolier 100; Kress B 154; PMM 221. - Full English description upon request.

Nouvelle Description du Cap de Bonne-Esperance
1778. BRINK, Carol Fredrik. Nouvelle Description du Cap de Bonne-Esperance. Two parts in one volume. [8], 130, [2], 100 pp. With 16 folding plates, of which 15 depict African game and 1 of an African tree. 8vo., 205 x 123 mm, bound in contemporary Dutch mottled calf, spine gilt, marbled edges and endpapers. Amsterdam: J.H. Schneider, 1778. |~||~||~||~||~||~| |~| First Edition in French. The original Dutch edition was published by the same printer in the same year. A fascinating account of the Cape of Good Hope which features an historical journal of an expedition into the interior of Africa undertaken by 85 men who were "diligent observers, and one of them had the advantage of being conversant with the Hottentot language. This document is therefore not only highly interesting, but of great permanent worth" (Theal). The work is illustrated with 16 fine engraved plates of African game; moreover, it contains insightful notes compiled by J.S.N. Allamand (a Leiden professor), M. Klockner (an Amsterdam physician) and other members of the expedition. The journal is based on the diary kept by Carol Fredrik Brink (or Brinck), who served as a land-surveyor on the expedition. There is much information on the African tribes, fauna and flora, and minerals that the caravan encountered during their tour to Namaqualand, which lasted from 16 July 1761 until 27 August 1762. Corners bumped, headcap worn, but a very good copy in unsophisticated condition. Theal, History of South Africa, 1691-1795 (erroneously calling for 13 plates).

WATTS, John after Abraham HONDIUS (circa 1625-1691)
A Pair: [Morning], [Evening]
London: Published by J. Watts, Dealer in Prints & Drawings opposite the Mews Gate Charing Cross, 1 June 1778. Mezzotints. Printed on laid watermarked paper. In excellent condition. [Morning] Image size: 9 1/2 x 13 7/8 inches. Plate mark: 10 x 13 7/8 inches. Sheet size: 10 5/8 x 14 7/8 inches. [Evening] Image size: 9 3/8 x 13 7/8. Plate mark: 9 7/8 x 13 7/8. Sheet size: 10 3/4 x 15 1/8 inches. This is a stunning pair of mezzotints of two hunting dogs catching their quarry, by John Watts after paintings by Abraham Hondius. Watts was a successful printmaker and publisher who was active in London during the second half of the eighteenth century. He was famed for his rich mezzotints, which he exhibited in London between 1766 and 1778. Watts scraped mezzotints after some of the most renowned artists of his day, but he had a special penchant for works by the Dutch masters, such as this handsome pair after Abraham Hondius, the celebrated Dutch animal painter. These rich mezzotints are a superb example of Watts's luxurious style of engraving, translating the energy and fluidity of Hondius's beautiful paintings into a dramatic example of superior mezzotint engraving.
