Proceedings of the first session of the Assemblée provinciale of Berri, the very first to be held as planned by Turgot and created by Necker. Sessions were held also in November 1783 and in October 1786. - Copy from the library of Laussat, with bookplate.

The chemistry of cement is very complex and was only fully understood in the mid-19th century. This work, by the great geologist Faujas (1741-1819), describes the chemical properties of pozzolana, similar to cement, which was known to and utilized by the ancient Roman builders and engineers. Faujas also discusses its uses in civil engineering works in modern times. !In 1775 he discovered a rich pozzolana mine on Mount Chenavary, which was used by the French government for building the port of Toulon. The use of pozzolana (a volcanic ash containing silica, alumina, lime, etc.) for the preparation of mortars and hydraulic cements is covered in this work, as is the chemistry of these materials.!!Neville, I, p. 447. SHAW (William)
An Analysis of the Galic Language. The Second Edition.
Edinburgh: Printed by W. and T. Ruddiman; For R. Jamieson.,. 1778 - Tall 8vo, pp. [iii] - 171 [172 blank], early 19th century calf, gilt spine, morocco label; front joint very slightly rubbed and slightly cracked at top, but a good copy. Shaw (1749 - 1831) published two editions of this work in 1778 (the first was a quarto), and he was the first to compile a grammar of the Gaelic language. He was friendly with Dr. Johnson, of whom he wrote a life and memoirs in 1785. Johnson spoke highly of this work and wrote proposals for publishing the work in 1777. In 1976, Dr. K. D. MacDonald said that it was "a rudimentary grammar, with no claim to distinction beyond its being the first published work of its kind." Still, it was the first of its kind and perhaps made possible the improved grammar published by Alexander Stewart in 1801, Elements of Gaelic Grammar. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Thick 8vo, cont. boards (corners a bit worn, light foxing). Nuremberg: J.E. Zeh, 1778.p First edition. This is a wonderful and detailed record of the art and book treasures of Nuremberg and Altdorf. He describes here the most important art works of the churches, museums, private art collections, natural history cabinets, and public and private libraries of these two cities. Murr has provided really useful accounts of many collections now dispersed or destroyed, including the famous Wunderkammern of Paul von Praun (1548-1616) and Johann George Volckamer (1616-93). The final chapter describes the city of Altdorf, the university library, medical garden, and the chemical laboratory, as well as the museum of Christoph Jacob Trew which boasted a magnificent Chinese book on natural history, acquired by a Russian in Peking in 1742. It is described here in 35 pages with a facsimile of the Chinese title. !This guidebook contains a reference, in its chronological section to the Ulman Stromer mill and to Stromer!s diary, as well as to von Murr!s earlier Journals in which he discusses Germany!s first papermaker at greater length.!!Schlosser, An Exhibition of Books on Papermaking (1968), no. 7. Harris, Moses (1730-C.1788)
Plate XXXVIII Fromthe Aurelian. a Natural History of English Moths and Butterflies [XXXVIII]
. London: 1778 [plates watermarked 1810]. Hand-coloured engraving. Loss to right margin skilfully restored. 11 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches. 15 x 10 1/2 inches. A fascinating plate depicting several butterflies and moths and their pre-winged forms from 'a timeless classic' and the 'most celebrated of all the early books about butterflies and moths' (Salmon) in exceptionally bright and fresh condition. Lisney held that Harris was 'one of the most outstanding authors of entomological literature during the eighteenth century. ' The present work is en example and displays a beautiful balance between accurate and innovative observation and the highest artistic merit. 'Harris began to take an active interest in entomology about the age of twelve and...was an accurate and original observer. He was, it is believed, the first to draw attention to the importance of wing neuration [the arrangement or distribution of nerves] in the classification of lepidoptera and upon this principle he arranged the species in his published works, illustrating them in colour with a high degree of accuracy. Harris certainly contributed much to the knowledge of the science and was one of the leading entomologists of his century. He was also a miniature painter of no mean accomplishment' (Lisney p.156). 'Moses Harris did much to encourage entomology at a time when the original dynamism of the age of Ray and the first Aurelian Society was waning. He was probably the prime mover in founding the second Aurelian Society...and in the unsurpassed plates of The Aurelian he left a timeless classic to future generations' (Salmon p.117). Sheet size: 10 3/4 x 15 1/8 inches. This is a stunning pair of mezzotints of two hunting dogs catching their quarry, by John Watts after paintings by Abraham Hondius. Watts was a successful printmaker and publisher who was active in London during the second half of the eighteenth century. He was famed for his rich mezzotints, which he exhibited in London between 1766 and 1778. Watts scraped mezzotints after some of the most renowned artists of his day, but he had a special penchant for works by the Dutch masters, such as this handsome pair after Abraham Hondius, the celebrated Dutch animal painter. These rich mezzotints are a superb example of Watts's luxurious style of engraving, translating the energy and fluidity of Hondius's beautiful paintings into a dramatic example of superior mezzotint engraving. Carver, Jonathan:
TRAVELS THROUGH THE INTERIOR PARTS OF NORTH- AMERICA, IN THE YEARS 1766, 1767, AND 1768.
London: Printed for the author, . 1778 - [20],xvi,543,[1]pp. plus two folding maps and four plates. Recent three- quarter calf and marbled boards in antique style. Minor worming to top left front corner of textblock, neatly repaired, not affecting text or map. First two leaves dampstained. Some foxing and offsetting. A good, solid copy. Carver went farther west than any British explorer before the Revolution. He was seeking a transcontinental waterway, but mainly explored tributaries of the Mississippi. His book, however, is often given credit for being a catalyst for further exploration, influencing Mackenzie and Lewis and Clark. "A Plan of Captain Carver's Travels in the Interior Parts of North America" shows the headwaters of the Mississippi, lakes Michigan and Superior, and the land as far west as the Dakotas. The text contains the first mention of the word, "Oregon." Includes material relating to the languages of a number of Indian tribes. A cornerstone early western travel narrative.

Russell, William:
THE HISTORY OF AMERICA, FROM ITS DISCOVERY BY COLUMBUS TO THE CONCLUSION OF THE LATE WAR. WITH AN APPENDIX, CONTAINING AN ACCOUNT OF THE RISE AND PROGRESS OF THE PRESENT UNHAPPY CONTEST BETWEEN GREAT BRITAIN AND HER COLONIES.
London: Fielding and Walker, . 1778 - Two volumes. iv,596; 629,[1]pp., plus forty- six (of fifty-one) maps and plates (some folding). Quarto. Three-quarter calf and marbled boards, rebacked in calf in a contemporary style. Some scattered foxing and off- setting from plates. Last leaf of first volume torn and repaired. Still, a good copy. A comprehensive history of America for the time, issued in the midst of the American Revolution, covering the period from the conquest through the settlement and division of America. It is likely that the book was inspired by the war, and the second half of the second volume is devoted to events from the French and Indian War up to the American treaty with France in February, 1778. Illustrated with a profusion of nicely engraved maps, plans, portraits and plates depicting South American Indians, scenes of European conquest, Florida Indians, Esquimaux, seaport views, and the like. While some of the views seem to have been cribbed from the usual sources such as De Bry's GRAND VOYAGES, many seem unique to this work. The early maps are after Bellin, the later ones after Jeffreys.

Under his leadership the Townshend Act was passed which imposed taxes on lead, paint, paper, glass and tea imported into the American colonies. These taxes, like the Stamp Act, were passed without colonial input--"Taxation Without Representation". This and other disputes erupted into open violence in 1770 with the Boston Massacre. In an attempt to cool the situation, the British repealed all the Townshend taxes with the exception of that on tea. In 1773, in yet another ill advised move, Parliament passed the Tea Act. This permitted the British East India Company to sell tea to the British colonies in North America without the usual colonial tax, enabling them to undercut legitimate merchants and smugglers. While the Tea Act did not add additional taxes to tea, it did cause a furor in the colonies where local merchants and smugglers rallied the colonists to boycott tea. The boycott culminated in the Boston Tea Party. We come to 1778 and the Revolutionary War. With the current act, Parliament repealed the remaining tax on tea as one means of trying to quell the rebellion. A move Too Little, Too Late..

Beatson, Robert
A Narrative of the Battle Fought at Sea, July 27, 1778
Privately Printed, England 1778 - No Publication Date Stated, but most probably issued within a short time of the battle, with no mention of the personal and political storm that resulted involving the actions of both Sir Hugh Palliser and Admiral the Honourable Augustus Keppel during the engagement. A finely produced pamphlet in regards to the First Battle of Ushant. Consists of a seven page Preface, a two-sided fold-out chart of the ships involved in the battle- the English Line of Battle on the front side, with the French Line of Battle on the back, with a full list of the killed and wounded on both sides, and a thirty page narrative of the action that took place. In the Preface, the author stresses the immediate need for the British Admiralty to test and arrive at a more suitable and uniform method of signalling between ships during naval engagements, where he clearly places the blame for the British fleet's failure to close with the French and force a decisive second battle. He also apologizes for this work (the pamphlet) causing the delay of the publication of "the remaining Volumes of the Naval and Military Memoirs. Condition: No covers present. Bound by hand-stitching via two holes two inches apart, centered from top to bottom, and neatly tied. Page edges chipped and tattered, but not near to affecting text. Paper lightly tanned, but very clean and sound, with no sign whatsoever of brittleness. Numerous corner creases. Text remains very clear and easily legible throughout. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
