The Stabat mater for two solo voices and strings, his most famous work, was evidently written in competition with Alessandro Scarlattis Stabat mater for the same voices and instruments. Medicinisch Chirurgische und Anatomische Wahrnehmungen. Nebst Kupfern und gedoppelten Registern. 2 Bde.
|

London. 1753.. 138pp. plus two plates. Quarto. Contemporary three quarter calf and marbled boards, neatly rebacked, leather label. Dampstain on endpapers and in gutter of several leaves, else very good. Cox notes this as the second, corrected edition, while Blackmer calls it the first edition, listing the other as simply another edition published the same year. The first part of the book consists of a translation of the journal of a Franciscan friar who travelled to Mount Sinai in 1722, where he viewed the undeciphered hieroglyphics on nearby monuments. Clayton used the hieroglyphics in theorizing on the possibility that they contained a key to the ancient Hebrews. Subsequent visits to the monuments by worthies such as Wortley Montagu, however, led to the conclusion that the hieroglyphics were relatively insignificant. COX I, p.226. BLACKMER 367.

Gray, Thomas
Designs by Mr. Bentley, for Six Poems by Mr. T. Gray
|
For R. Dodsley. Rothschild 1065, London 1753 - Six full-page engraved plates, engraved vignette on the title, twelve vignettes in the text, and six engraved initials by Muller and Grignon. 4to (in half-sheets). [2], 35, [3] ff. Bound in contemporary tree calf, smooth spine divided into six panels by gilt fillets, lettered in the second on a red goatskin label and with a gilt crest at the foot, plain endleaves, light yellow edges. (Joints cracked, worn). The first issue of the first edition, with the half-title reading "Drawings, &c". This was corrected to "Designs, &c" in subsequent issues. The four page "Explanation of the Prints", written by Horace Walpole (who was responsible for publishing the work), precedes the text. Occasional light spotting, ff.25-30 browned, and a few minor marks or stains, but a good copy. The poem "A Long Story" was printed here for the first time, but the other pieces had been previously published, and Gray was averse to the whole project. He was insistent that "Designs" should precede "Poems" in the title, and informed Dodsley: "I desire it to be understood (w'ch is the truth) that the verses are only subordinate & explanatory to the Drawings, & suffer'd be me to go out thus only for that reason.". Walpole tried to persuade Gray to leave out "the Mr. before your names; it is a barbarous addition. one of the Gothicisms I abominate", but "Mr." they remained, and Gray also had his way in suppressing the frontispiece portrait. Whatever Gray may have felt, the work is "by far the most sophisticated example of English rococo book-illustration" and "perhaps, the finest English illustrated book of the century" (Harthan, The History of the Illustrated Book, pp.154-5). Some of the designs, including the famous frontispiece to "Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard", have Gothic features, while "the others display an eclectic melange of currently fashionable decorative motifs, caryatid-draped frontispieces, rococo scrolls and strapwork, an occasional intrusion of chinoiserie, and nude or lightly-clad figures which simultaneously look back to Poussinesque prototypes and forward to Neo-Classicism". Richard Bentley (1708-1782), the son of the great Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, was a protege and friend of Horace Walpole, and a chief designer of Strawberry-Hill. Bookplate of Edward, Lord Suffield (1781-1835).

s.l., s.d. .. H 38.4 x L 25.8 cm, oban tate-e, signed Utamaro hitsu, under glas and ancient black lacquered wood frame.Geisha and attendant (shinzo) on a rainy night sheltering beneath an umbrella, as they hurry throught the rain at night, the attendant carrying a lantern and a shamisen box. Uniformly browned. Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1808) is regarded as one of the foremost painters of beauty, or the 'bijinga' genre. The original name of Utamaro is Ichitaro Kitagawa. It is generally agreed that he started his career as a pupil of the painter Toriyama Sekien. His early known works are actor portraits and theater programs, published under the name of Utagawa Toyoaki. In 1781/82 he changed his name to Kitagawa Utamaro. About this print see Shibui, Kiyoshi, Utamaro, Tokyo 1952.-------------------------, H 38,4 x L 25,8 cm, oban tate-e, signe Utamaro hitsu, sous verre et encadrement encien en bois laque noir.

|
