Cregander [pseud.]:
Merckwürdiges Leben und Thaten Des Welt-berühmten [.] General-Lieutenants bey der Infanterie und Commendanten der Vestung Königstein, Friedrich Wilh. Frey-Herrns von Kyau. 2 Teile in 1 Bd.
Cölln [d.i. Eisenach, Wittekind], Tl. 1: 1737, Tl. 2: 1736. - kl.8°. 3 Bl., 232 S. / 224 S. Beide Teile rot u. schwarz gedruckt. Buddenbrock" in Bleistift a.d. Vorsatz. 2. Vgl. dazu Hayn/G. III,647; dort auch einige spätere Auflagen bis 1769, die die Beliebtheit dieser Biographie einer skurrilen Persönlichkeit bezeugen, Faber du Faur 1698: Kyau [1654-1733] was famous for his mad escapades and ready wit. The book [.] is interspersed with numerous poems and offers a deep insight into the behavior of the Saxon and Brandenburg courts." - Weller, Lex. Pseud. S. 236 (offenbar bis heute nicht aufgelöst). Weller, Druckorte I, S. 78. 670g [Attributes: Hard Cover]

WEINMANN, Johann Wilhelm
Coral...N. 425
Regensburg: H. Lentz and H.G. Neubauer. First. unbound. very good. Botanical. Color mezzotint with hand coloring. Page measures 16.25" x 10.5". Beautiful print from the four-volume study of flowers and plants, "Phytanthoza Iconographia" edited by Johann Weinmann between 1737 and 1745. Both accurate and beautiful, these prints were the first botanical color mezzotints, a revolutionary method that allowed for subtlety and detail. Weinmann (1683-1741) was a renowned pharmicist whose plant studies earned him scientific acclaim among botanists. He employed several botanical artists and engravers to assist with the project including Bartholomaus Seuter, Johann Ridinger, Johann Jakob Haid and most notably Georg Dionysus Ehret. Weinmann was the first to publish drawings by Ehret, but after a dispute over payment, gave him no credit. Ehret later became a dominant figure in the botanical world under the patronage of Dr. Jakob Trew. Light stain to lower left edge. Pin holes along left edge from original binding. Full original margins. Please visit our gallery for more Weinmann prints.

This interesting letter is addressed to Belcher as governor of New Hampshire and concerns the "swapping" of a horse, "a mair." Watson, R[Ichard], Bishop Of Landaff
An Apology for the Bible, in a Series of Letters, Addressed to Thomas Paine, Author of a Book Entitled, the Age of Reason, Part the Second, Being an Investigation of True and of Fabulous Theology
Printed for T. Evans, . Cadell and Davies, . et al, 1796, third edition. Small 8vo. pp. [4], 385; contemporary full calf, somewhat worn; front board loose, lacking ffep; text extremely clean; a very good copy. The author (1737-1816) was a professor of chemistry, a man of the cloth, and the bishop of Landaff. He was a prolific writer, and this work was, without doubt, the most popular of his writings. It is directed against Thomas Paine's "Second Part of the Age of Reason" (1795) and especially against the latter's treatment of the Scriptures, which Watson thought to be unworthy of Paine's great powers of reasoning. The "Apology" was eagerly read in America as well as in England, and went through several editions, abridgements, and translations.

WEINMANN, Johann Wilhelm
Coral.N. 425.
      H. Lentz and H.G. Neubauer, Regensburg - Beautiful print from the four-volume study of flowers and plants, "Phytanthoza Iconographia" edited by Johann Weinmann between 1737 and 1745. Both accurate and beautiful, these prints were the first botanical color mezzotints, a revolutionary method that allowed for subtlety and detail. Weinmann (1683-1741) was a renowned pharmicist whose plant studies earned him scientific acclaim among botanists. He employed several botanical artists and engravers to assist with the project including Bartholomäus Seuter, Johann Ridinger, Johann Jakob Haid and most notably Georg Dionysus Ehret. Botanical. Color mezzotint with hand coloring. Page measures 16.25" x 10.5".

. . Primera parte @[all published].
Coimbra, Antonio Simoens Ferreira, 1737. Title-page printed in red and black. Woodcut headpieces, tailpieces and initials. (6 ll.), 300, 78 pp. Folio, contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt, worn, spine ends chipped, light worming. Some worming, mostly marginal, but touching a letter or two in the sidenotes, and occasionally in the text, on many pages. Some light marginal dampstaining and stains. Bookseller's blindstamp in blank portion of title-page. Second edition of a historical work "of considerable interest and importance" (Bell). In the course of describing the Portuguese climate, people, religion and nobility, Sousa de Macedo mentions Portuguese activities in America, Asia and Africa. @Flores de España, written when Sousa de Macedo was only twenty-two, was composed in Spanish in order to reach a wider audience. To this edition is appended the author's @Armonia politica (second edition; first published 1651), lacking in the first edition of Lisbon, 1631. Drawing his examples from past kings of Portugal, he describes how a ruler should apply justice to himself and to his relations with God and his subjects. The work was written and first published while Sousa de Macedo was on a ticklish diplomatic mission to Holland in 1650-52, to negotiate the status of Pernambuco. Sousa de Macedo (1606-1682), a native of Porto who studied law at Coimbra, reached the highest echelons of the magistracy and diplomatic service, in part because he had played an important role in the restoration of Portuguese independence, and won the trust of D. João IV. When @Flores de España was first published he was Secretary to the Portuguese Ambassador to London (where he received a British peerage from Charles I); later he became Ambassador to the States of Holland, and Secretary of State to D. Affonso VI. A man of vast erudition, he published works in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin. Among the best known are @Ulyssipo, 1640, and @Lusitania liberata, 1645. He has also been proposed as the author of the classic @Arte de furtar (see Saraiva & Lopes, @História da literatura portuguesa [1976], pp. 401-2 @et passim). Innocêncio I, 276-8. The scarce sale catalogue of the library of one of the great woman book collectors, Jeanne Baptiste d’Albert de Luynes, Comtesse de Verruë (1670-1736), known as “la Dame de volupté.” Married at age 13, she is best remembered for her liaison with Victor-Amédée, Duke of Savoy, whose mistress she became. In 1700, she fled to Paris where she established herself as a leading member of the intellectual world. She formed a large collection of antiquities, art objects, and books. This catalogue, listing about 18,000 books, is based on the inventory made after the Comtesse’s death in November of 1736. There are only 389 lots but each contains many titles. Guigard (Vol. I, p. 206) describes her library as “surtout remarquable parmi tant de remarquables choses: un diamant serti d’or.” La Vallière acquired the works of drama and they are now at the Arsenal.

Io. Laurentii Moshenii [Johann Lorenz Mosheim]
Institutiones Historiae Christianae Antiquioris
Helmstadii: Apud Chrtistian Frid. Weygand, 1737. 2 volumes in 1 8vo. . 840 pp. Vellum binding with some staining, scuffing and rubbing to boards and spine. Dark page edges. With vignette illustrated title page. Copper engraving to first text page. Great piece of Christian history, written by the "father of Church history" (see below), Johann Lorenz Mosheim. Contains dedication and preface. In Latin. In very good condition.#11;#11;Johann Lorenz von Mosheim (1693 ! 1755), German Lutheran divine and Church historian. Born at Lubeck on the 9th of October, 1693 or 1694. After studying at the gymnasium of his native place, he entered the University of Kiel (1716), where he took his masters degree in 1718. In 1719 he became assessor in the philosophical faculty at Kiel. His first appearance in the field of literature was in a polemical tract against John Toland, Vindiciae antiquae christianorum disciplinae (1720), which was soon followed by a volume of Observationes sacrae (1721). These works, along with the reputation he had acquired as a lecturer and preacher, secured for him a call to the University of Helmstedt as professor erdinarius in 1723. The Inst itutionum historiae ecclesiasticae libri IV appeared in 1726, and in the same year he was appointed by the duke of Brunswick abbot of Marienthal, to which dignity and emolument the abbacy of Michaelstein was added in the following year.#11;Mosheim was much consulted by the authorities when the new University of Gottingen was being formed; especially in the framing of the statutes of the theological faculty, and the provisions for making the theologians independent of the ecclesiastical courts. In 1747 he was made chancellor of the university. He died at Gottingen on the 9th of September.#11;Among his other works were De rebus christianorum ante Constantinum commentarii (1753), Ketzer-Geschichte (2nd ed. 1748), and Sittenlehre der heiligen Schrift (x7~553). His exegetical writings, characterized by learning and good sense, include Cogitationes in N. T. bc. select. (1726), and expositions of I Corinthians (1741) and the two Epistles to Timothy (1755). In. his sermons (Heilige Reden) considerable eloquence is shown, and a mastery of style which justifies the position he held as president of the German Society.#11;There are two English versions of the Institutes, that of Archibald Maclaine, published in 1764, and that of James Murdock (1832), which is the more correct. Murdock's translation was revised and re-edited by James Seaton Reid in 1848, and by H. L. Hastings in 1892 (Boston), An English translation of the De rebus christianorum was published by Murdock in 1851.#11;#11;"Mosheim was not only the most learned theologian in the Lutheran Church of his day, he was also one of the first German authors and scholars of his age. His style was pure, elegant, fluent, and felicitous, whether in German or Latin. This esthetic quality was fostered by his early acquaintance with the literature of England, France, and Italy, to which was chiefly due the breadth of view which enabled him so to further the theological science of his day, especially in church history. His Institutiones historia Christiana maiores (Helmstadt, 1739) was intended to be more detailed, but Mosheim finished only the first century. The want was supplied to a certain extent by his Commentarii de rebus Christianorum ante Constantinum Magnum (Helmstadt, 1753 Eng. transl. Commentaries on the Affairs of the Christians.before Constantine the Great.) which is his most mature accomplishment in church history."--N. Bonwetsch in New Schaff-Herzog Enc. Rel.

(2), ii, xxxiv, ii, 313(1), (10); (2), 326, (10) pp. Two vols., 12mo, contemporary speckled calf, gilt, nicely rebacked, spines gilt., red morocco labels. First edition. The essential text from Nos. 1-138 of the Grub Street Journal, the most celebrated literary weekly of the day; the period covered is from January, 1730, to August, 1732. This periodical was set in motion by Alexander Pope, but the two day-to-day editors were Richard Russell ("Maevius"), a disgruntled clergyman who ran a boarding-house for the sons of nonjurors, and John Martyn ("Baevius"), an able botanist with a taste for literary squabbling. The Grub Street Journal consistently supported members of the Pope-Swift circle, and as a corollary, was ever in battle with such contemporaries as Lewis Theobald, Colley Cibber, Richard Bentley, etc., and more than anyone, Henry Fielding; for a full discussion of the quarrels included in these two volumes, see Cross, The History of Henry Fielding, I, pp. 114-141. This journal continued for another five years, but this is the only collected edition; original issues in any significant number are of great rarity. Included here are many original poems, some of them by Pope himself; the first volume has a long and quite interesting new preface. The point of this periodical was that it was literary, not political; it was in many ways the model for the Gentleman's Magazine, launched by Edward Cave in 1731. A fine set. Griffith 452; Case 414; Crane and Kaye 290; CBEL II, 1327.

Rowning, John
A COMPENDIOUS SYSTEM OF NATURAL PHILOSOPHY: With Notes Containing The Mathematical Demonstrations, And Some Occasional Remarks
London: London: Sam Harding 1737-1738, 1737. Early physics book with section on telescopes. This copy basically conforms with the Harvard second edition copy, with however the first part having a "third edition" title page of 1738. The other two parts with the second edition title pages of 1737 and 1738 as in the Harvard copy (although the Harvard copy appears to have a variant title page for the second part of Part II dated 1736!). Five separate title pages in all, plus a preliminary title page. Binding has been repaired as the book had split vertically at one time. Glue repair and clear tape reinforcement. An amateur but fairly satisfactory repair considering this is ideally a candidate for complete rebacking at some point in the future anyway. Preceding the first part title page is a general title page for the 1744 edition, but the fourth part that was part of the 1744 edition is not in this volume. This volume conforms instead with earlier volumes that had three parts ending with a section on optics. That section includes interesting material on telescopes. This volume has to be considered a working copy because of the binding, but the contents are complete and there is actually one more folding plate than the Harvard copy has. That may be because the first part of this copy is actually from the third edition according to its title page. So it may have an extra plate not in the earlier editions of the first part. There are 9 numbered folding plates in the first part, 6 numbered folding plates in the second part, and 15 numbered folding plates in the third part. Binding has five raised bands on spine. There was a fairly recent addition of a title strip in gilt printed on what appears to be brown paper as opposed to the morocco that would have been used originally. Both covers are present but have been reattached with the tape reinforcement. The leather is very worn on the covers and spine but some of the original gilt work can be seen. Leather is a dark brown. The book will look less than perfect but not exactly terrrible on the shelf. Contents are actually quite fresh and clean. Front and back original endpapers. One short old worming trail affects bottom blank margin and blank endpapers of last 20 pages. Not a serious condition problem in itself. Contents: Pt. 1. The properties of bodies, their laws of motion, and the mechanical powers -- Pt. 2. Hydrostatics and pneumatics -- Pt. 3. Optics. . Mixed State of Second and Third Editions. Full Calf. Abt Good/N/A. 3 Parts, 75, 176, 212 pp + 30 Foldout Plates . "Physics, Early Physics, Telescopes, Early Telescopes, Optics.

Amsterdam, Erven van J. Ratelband en Compagnie 1737. 8°., 8 ff., 504 pp, 4 ff., with frontispiece and 27 folding engravings. Pappe d. Zt. Third, expanded edition of this complete guide to the streets and sights of early 18th century Amsterdam, accompanied by 28 engravings - two more plates than the original. Its 504 pages attempt to detail in full the city's "eerste opkomst, vergrootingen, en tegenwoordigen staat" as well as its "Graften, Straaten, Markten, Geestelyke en Waereldlyke Gebouwen, Legen Verblyfplaatzen van Veerscheepen, Markschuiten, Boodens, Posten, enz." The engravings include cosmopolitan and harbour scenes as well as more rural aspects of Amsterdam life. Unlike Commelin's Beschryvinge van Amsterdam (1665), which was also reprinted in the early 1700s, Hoorn's guide is a distinctly 18th century record of daily life in the capital, first published 48 years after Commelin's original publication. A translated version of the present work appears to have been very popular in France, running to numerous editions between 1720 and 1772 under the title of Le Guide ou nouvelle description d'Amsterdam. - Binding rubbed and bumped, inside just minor browning, else clean.

Coimbra, Antonio Simoens Ferreira, 1737. - Title-page printed in red and black. SALLUST.
Caii Crispi Sallustii quae exstant
Venice: Giovanni Battista Paschal, 1737 - Recensuit diligentissime et adnotationibus illustravit Gottlieb Cortius accedunt Fragmenta Veterum Historicum Constantius Felicius Durantinus de Conjuratione Catilinae et index necessarius. Large paper copy of the famous edition of Sallust by the short lived Gottlieb Kortte (1698?1731), whose installation as professor of jurisprudence at Liepzig in 1726 Bach hailed in the allegorical cantata Vereinigte Zwietracht. Kortte's edition of Sallust was first published in 1724. Samuel Charles Smith (usually styling himself C. Smith, as here) was one of the most competent London binders of the early 19th century. He was born about 1790, and was active from about 1813 to probably 1840. He was one of a number of binders to earn William Beckford's displeasure and features in Beckford's letters to his bookseller, George Clarke, in 1831 as Beast Smith (see Hobson, William Beckford's binders, Festschrift Ernst Kyriss, pp. 375-81). The celebrated library of Sir John Thorold at Syston Park contained a number of books bound by Smith. Large quarto (307 × 225 mm), in two parts, with continuous pagination and register. Bound by C. Smith in early 19th-century dark green diagonal-straight-grained morocco, spine divided in six compartments by wide raised bands, gilt lettered in two, others with gilt borders, sides with four-line gilt rules and elaborate scroll tools at corners; board edges and turn-ins ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Title printed in red and black. Bookplates of Syston Park, Sir John Hayford Thorold, and William Henry Smith, founder of the stationers W. H. Smith. Extremities a little rubbed, but a fine copy handsomely bound. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[West Indies]:
REASONS FOR A WAR AGAINST SPAIN. IN A LETTER FROM A MERCHANT OF LONDON TRADING TO AMERICA, TO A MEMBER OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS. WITH A PLAN OF OPERATIONS
London. 1737.. 40pp. Modern half calf and paper boards, spine gilt. Very good. Written on the eve of another round of warfare with Spain, and chiefly concerned with the Spanish threat to British trade and commerce in the West Indies. The unknown author, identified only as "L.D.," asserts that Spanish depredations against British shipping in the "American seas" are more than enough justification for a declaration of war against Spain, and that "Great Britain reaps so many benefits from their trade to America, that there is some room to doubt whether the Kingdom can subsist without it." He contends that not only has Great Britain the right to declare war against Spain, but sufficient might to ensure victory. The final three pages contains Queen Elizabeth's speech of 1588 to her army at Tilbury, when Britain was threatened with invasion by Spain. OCLC locates only the second edition of 1738. Rare. INED, 1507, 1508, 1509, 1510, 1511, 1512. - Projet d'administration, remis à M.
