Printing and the Mind of Man, 155 : ""The first modern encyclopaedia""."

|
(Juan Malo) [1732], (Colophon: Zaragoza) - Unbound pamphlet Small 4to . Fascinating and rare account of the succesful siege of Oran in Algeria by Spain with many details of the participation of Arab cavalry and artillery against the Spanish. The Spanish lost a general and a colonel along with 1500 men were either killed or wounded. Oran was founded in 903 by Moorish Andalusian traders but was captured by the Spanish under Cardinal Cisneros in 1509. Spanish sovereignty lasted until 1708, when the city was conquered by the Ottomans. After the battle described here Spain recaptured the city in 1732. Oran's value as a trading post would later decreased to such an extent that King Charles IV would later sell city to the Turks in 1792. A very rare news letter and unrecorded in OCLC which locates a Seville edition published the same year at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Germany. The BL has Madrid and Seville editions [8] pp. Light browning; faint dampstain; inner margins reinforced § Not in Palau.

Manoscritto in buone condizioni, carta vergellata e filigranata, italiano e talvolta in latino entro stupenda copertina in carta coeva in rosso ed oro.

GENSOLLEN (J. L.)
Franc-aleu de Provence.
|
- Aix, David, 1732. 1 volume in 4 relié en plein veau marbré, dos lisse orné, étiquette de titre en maroquin rouge. 295 pp. Très bel exemplaire. Ce livre est un véritable plaidoyer pour le maintien du franc-aleu "de nature" ou "sans-titre" en Provence. Le franc-aleu est un héritage qui ne relève d'aucun seigneur et qui est exempt de tous droits et devoirs féodaux. Ouvrage de circonstance puisque la jouissance du franc-aleu dans cette province a toujours été contestée par les souverains français et plus particulièrement en 1730. Il est divisé en 5 parties : 1) usage du franc-aleu depuis les Romains jusqu'en 1730 - 2) dissertation sur les droits seigneuriaux - 3) droits appliqués en Provence depuis les Romains jusqu'au rattachement de cette province au royaume de France sous Louis XI - 4) l'auteur prouve aux fermiers que les comtes de Provence ont toujours fait appliquer le franc-aleu - 5) édits & lettres patentes servant de preuve à l'ouvrage. Die durch Pierre Aubert erweiterte Ausgabe, in schönem Druck von dem bedeutendem, historisch und stilistisch ausgerichtetem Wörterbuch des französischem Lexikographen César-Pierre Richelet (1626-1698). Das Werk, das als das erste Definitionswörterbuch der französischen Sprache gilt, war modellbildend und erschien erstmals 1680 bei Widerhold in Genf und wurde bis 1840 immer wieder aufgelegt. R.'s Wörterbuch musste zunächst außerhalb Frankreichs erscheinen, da die 'Academie' von 1674 bis 1714 das königliche Privileg für die Veröffentlichung einsprachiger Wörterbücher besaß. Obwohl als reines Sprachwörterbuch konzipiert, enthält es einen nicht unbeträchtlichen Teil an Fachlexik (vgl. dazu: Hoffmann u.a, Fachsprachen. Ein internationales Handbuch zur Fachsprachenforschung. S.1685). Bei seinem Erscheinen soll das Werk wegen der darin enthaltenen Obszönitäten und gegen ungeliebte Zeitgenossen (namentlich Amelot de La Houssaye, Furetière und Varillas) gerichteten Beleidigungen, großes Aufsehen erregt haben. Die Legende, wonach das Wörterbuch zunächst in Frankreich verboten gewesen sein soll ist allerdings nicht belegbar. - Mit der vorangestellten 'Bibliotheque des Auteurs', einem alphabetisch nach Autoren geordneten, bio-bibliographischen Quellenlexikons. AN EXCELLENT AND EARLY GUIDE TO ALL OF THE TOKYO AREA [Edo 1732, Yorozu-ya]. Blue stitched wrs., very good, covers worn, scuffed, contents clean, 6 volume set, complete, [208] double-folded leaves, 21 maps, 5 illustrations, entirely woodblock printed on hand-made paper, 16 x 23 cm., unusual. This is an excellent guide to old Edo by sections, each vol- ume is devoted to several areas. They include Asakusa, Shin Yoshiwara, Sakamoto, Koishikawa, Ootsuka, Ueno, Yotsuya, Akasaka, Shibuya, Okubo, Ichigaya, Aoyama, Mita, Shinagawa, Oii, &c., only to mention a few. Japanese commentaries guide the reader to the sights and places of interest, using the maps and illustrations to emphasize. The author was a Haiku poet who wrote essays an Edo citizen. See JAPAN BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA AND WHO'S WHO p.591 under Kikuoka Mitsukuni his nephew. This elusive work is not found in Toda, Brown, Edgr- en, Dawson, Dawes or Hickman. Found in H. Kerlen: CATALOGUE OF PRE-MEIJI JAPANESE BOOKS & MAPS IN PUBLIC COLLECTIONS IN THE NETHERLANDS p.90 #230. This entry shows a 1732 preface date and continues through 8 volumes ending in 1772. Ours is likely an earlier edition complete in 6 volumes, the 1772 is a later expanded version. A famous work on Edo typography. PHELIPEAUX, Abbé Jean;

Franois-Marie Arouet (16941778) better known by the pen name Voltaire, was a French Enlightenment writer, essayist, and philosopher known for his wit and his defence of civil liberties, including both freedom of religion and free trade. Voltaire was a prolific writer and produced works in almost every literary form including plays, poetry, novels, essays, historical and scientific works, more than 20,000 letters and more than 2,000 books and pamphlets. He was an outspoken supporter of social reform, despite strict censorship laws and harsh penalties for those who broke them. ?
Manoscritto in buone condizioni, carta vergellata e filigranata, italiano e talvolta in latino entro stupenda copertina in carta coeva in rosso ed oro.

4to. Bound. With woodcut on title, and 7 woodcuts in text. (24) pp. Rare early chapbook edition of the account of the destruction of the city of Jerusalem, based on "De Bello Judaico" by Flavius Josephus. The version popular in the Northern Netherlands however, entirely differs from the version popular in the Southern Netherlands, at least after 1621 when the old version was forbidden in the Southern Netherlands. After 1621 the version in the Southern Netherlands was titled "De verderffenisse of destructie van Jerusalem" and edited by the famous Flemish historian Adriaen van Meerbeeck (1563-1627). In the Northern Netherlands the old version remained in use, still unexpurgated of wild anecdotes and curious legends, like Pilatus together with the Jews defending Jerusalem, and during the siege the starved women ate their children, and gave Pilatus a quarter of each child to eat. Or the story that after the Romans had conquered the city, Pilatus was brought to trial, but all the Jews were slaughtered by the Romans who searched for gold in their stomachs. The present chapbook is one of the rarest, both in the Northern and Southern Netherlands. Rather used and worn, but acceptable copy.- (Sl. cut short; spine frayed, split in the middle, just touching the text; stained and dust-soiled). This ed. not found recorded; cf. Waller 725-729 (Northern Netherlands ed. ca. 1780-1880); Boekenoogen L 18174-18181 (idem, ed. 1762 - ca. 1870); Muller 721-724* (idem, ed. ca. 1650-1850); De Vries 121-122 (ed. ca.-1840-1845); Van den Bergh p. 65 ff. Petrarca or Petrarch (1304-1374) Italian scholar and poet, often considered the "first humanist".He was widely traveled and became the first great Alpinist. His famous series of poems to Laura, the Canzoniere, are still considered some of the greatest poems ever written. "Not only did this culture hero gain an ardent welcome or these ideas and practices (antiquarianism, study of elegant Latin, study of Greek, etc.), but he shaped them into a single movement that came to dominate the culture of the age: to have established the vogue and ideology of classical antiquity and humanistic studies was Petrarch's most significant achievement. In this sense he was 'the founder of the Renaissance." Wedeck & Schweitzer, Dictionary of the Renaissance.Born in the Tuscan city of Lucca, Vellutello was active in Venice during the early part of the century. Vellutello first made a name for himself by publishing a commentary on Petrarch in 1525 and an edition of Virgil's works in 1533. By the time he turned to Dante, the Petrarch commentary had been twice reprinted and was well on its way to becoming one of the great editorial successes of the period. ÒAlessandro Vellutello...considered the whole of the Canzoniere as a single poem whose exordium was contained in thefirst sonnet, its narration in the sonnets and other poems following, its conclusion (in the form of a prayer) in the final canzone.Ó [Dict. of the History of Ideas.] EDIT 16 CNCE 32899 (5 only). |
(Colophon: Zaragoza): (Juan Malo). [1732]. Unbound pamphlet Small 4to . Oran's value as a trading post would later decreased to such an extent that King Charles IV would later sell city to the Turks in 1792.A very rare news letter and unrecorded in OCLC which locates a Seville edition published the same year at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Germany. The BL has Madrid and Seville editions [8] pp. Light browning; faint dampstain; inner margins reinforced § Not in Palau

Wallis 321.1 'Reid, Andrew (d. 1767?), editor and author, was probably a member of the Reid family of Fife, although details of his birth and upbringing are unknown. He is thought to have moved to London about 1720, and from 1728 he edited the Present State of the Republick of Letters, a periodical which appeared annually in two volumes under Reid's control until it ceased publication in 1736. In 1732 he published an Abstract of Sir Isaac Newton's Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms and in the following year edited, with John Gray, an abridgement of the Philosophical Transactions and Collections, covering the twelve years from 1720. His later studies on scientific subjects included An Account of some Experiments on Tar-Water (1747); An Essay on Logarithms (1767), dedicated to his long-standing friend John Gray; and Elements of the Theory and Practice of Chymistry (3rd edn, 1775), a translation of a work by Pierre Joseph Macquer. In 1767 he was employed to edit for press the first two editions of History of the Life of Henry II by George, first Baron Lyttelton. It was in connection with this, Reid's last literary project, that he was described by Samuel Johnson as 'a man not without considerable abilities, and not unacquainted with letters and with life', who convinced Lyttelton, 'as he had persuaded himself, that he was master of the secret of punctuation' (Johnson, 1.453). The dates of Reid's death and burial are not known, although the Dictionary of National Biography suggests that he probably died in 1767, the third edition of Lyttelton's History (1768) being corrected by another editor'. - Philip Carter, ONDB.
