Hawkins, William.
A TREATISE OF THE PLEAS OF THE CROWN: Or a System of the Principal Matters relating to the Subject, digested under their proper Heads.
      E. and R. Nutt and R. Gosling. -6. 1724 - 2nd Ed. Corrected with the Addition of some References. 2 vols. in 1. Folio. T.p. + ded. [ii] + Preface [ii] + An Account of the Authors . [ii] + An Analysis of the First Book . [vi] + 266pp. + Index ([Yyy2]-Kkkk) + T.p. + ded. [ii] An Analysis [iii] + Publ. advert. [i] + 464pp. + Index (C5c-[X5x]). Some light browning, contemporary annotations, nicely rebound in modern speckled calf, gilt rule edged raised bands with gilt lettered title label to spine. EST CT126275. William Hawkins (1681/2?1750), serjeant-at-law. ?. His career as a legal writer began as early as 1711 with an abridgement of Coke upon Littleton, which reached a fourth edition in 1822. He is best known in the legal profession for his Pleas of the Crown (1716?21), a copy of which he presented to Oriel. This treatise may indeed have been his principal qualification for the coif. It was the first substantial exposition of English criminal law to be printed since that by Sir Edward Coke (1552?1634), and it represented a distinct advance in terms of analysis and detail. The masterpiece by Sir Matthew Hale (1609?1676), the Historia placitorum coronae, was not published until 1736, and even then it did not supplant Hawkins, being an earlier composition. In the third edition of Hawkins, in 1739, references to Hale were inserted by G. L. Scott. Posthumous editions appeared in 1762, 1771 (by Thomas Leach), 1787, 1795, and 1824 (by John Curwood), and a summary was published in 1728 (second edition 1770) .? ANSTIS, John
Register of the Most Noble Order of the Garter
1724. FIRST EDITION. ANSTIS, John. The Register of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, From its Cover in Black Velvet; Usually Called the Black Book!. London: John Barber, 1724. Two volumes. Folio, contemporary full brown calf rebacked, black morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers. $2200. Scarce first edition of this record of the most honored of chivalric orders, illustrated with numerous copper-engravings including a frontispiece in each volume; intricate vignettes, tailpieces and historiated initials throughout; twelve plates, including nine full-page depictions of heraldry, in Volume II; and two large, folding scenes of court life in Volume I. Founded by Edward III in 1348, the Order of the Garter is "considered the highest British honor. Legend holds that it was created after an incident in which Edward was dancing with the Countess of Salisbury, when one of her garters dropped to the floor. As bystanders snickered, Edward gallantly picked up the garter and put it on his own leg, admonishing the courtiers in French with what is now the order's motto, 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' ('Shame to him who thinks evil of it')" (Britannica). These volumes, illustrated with numerous copper-engravings including nine full-page armorial plates and two folding scenes of court life, present the history of the Order, documented with extensive membership lists, genealogies and descriptions of ceremony and ritual. A heraldic writer and Garter king of arms, Anstis was in 1715 "suspected of intriguing in the cause of the Pretender, and with other gentlemen was thrown into prison! While Anstis was in prison the office of Garter became vacant by the death of Sir Henry St. George. Sir John Vanbrugh, Clarencieux king-at-arms, was appointed to the vacancy, Anstis' claims being set aside. But Anstis would not submit to this arrangement. He cleared himself of the charge of treasonable practices, and then proceeded to prosecute his claims with the utmost vigor! After much delay the controversy was at last terminated! in favor of Anstis! Shortly before the death of George I, [Anstis] received a patent under the great seal securing the office to himself and his eldest son and the survivor of them! Anstis was a man of the greatest learning and industry! Pope alludes to Anstis in the Imitations of Horace: 'A man of wealth is dubbed a man of worth, Venus shall give him form, and Anstis birth'; and Prior mentions him in an epigram: 'But coronets we owe to crowns, and favor to a court's affection. By nature we are Adam's sons, and sons of Anstis by election'" (DNB). Lowndes, 50. Allibone, 65. Brunet I:306n. Graesse I:41. Occasional small ink marginalia. Scattered light foxing. Mild age-wear, light discoloration to contemporary calf. A near-fine copy. Scarce.

LEGRAND, Marc-Antoine;

Ramsay
(Allan) The Ever Green, being a Collection of Scots Poems, Wrote by the Ingenious before 1600.
Edinburgh, Printed by Mr. Thomas Ruddiman..., 1724 first edition, 2 Vols., sm.8vo., orig. sprinkledcalf, spines ornamented in gilt within raised bands, red morocco labels sympathetically renewed Alston ix/88; Burns Martin 75; ECSB 158; Rothschild 1729. From the library of William Tytler (1711-1792), lawyer, historian, one of the Edinburgh literati, and editor of The Poetical Remains of James the First, King of Scotland, with his signature on the volume i front free endpaper and his marginal notes in thirteen places. These include i. an extensive note on the identity of Macduncan in “The Battle of Harlaw;” ii. a note identifying Ramsay as the author of the concluding stanzas to Dunbar’s “Tydings frae the Session;” iii. notes that “The Justing and Debate up at the Doun” is according to Lord Hailes The Jousting...at the Drum, “that is Lord Somervilles house above Dalkeith;” iv. ascribe authorship to several poems, some again with reference to Lord Hailes. Tytler would have known Ramsay well, at least by sight: the bookseller-poet did not die until 1758. He was certainly on close and friendly terms with the younger Allan Ramsay, the painter and pamphleteer. The Ever Green contains poems by Sempill, Henryson, Dunbar, James I, and others; chiefly derived from the Bannatyne manuscript and many of them published here for the first time. One political satire, "The Vision," though disguised as an earlier work, is Ramsay's own, and is his best sustained lyric. In publishing this work and The Tea-Table Miscellany, Ramsay was the main agent in the revival of vernacular poetry which was to influence the course of poetry from Ramsay himself through Fergusson and Burns.

Catalogue of the Pepys Library at Magdalene College Cambridge
Boydell & Brewer Ltd - Pepys's library has been, as he directed, preserved intact at his old Cambridge college since 1724. Between 1978 and 1994 a complete catalogue was published for the first time. The present title, essential to all users of the firs t volume in that series, N.A. Smith's Printed Books vastly enhances the range of information available. The short-title arrangement of Printed Books is replaced by a numerical listing which follows the library's she lf-order; many entries have been extended, and where possible updated with reference to new scholarship; the location of MSS and other material treated elsewhere in the catalogue is also indicated, providing for the first time a p ublished conspectus of the whole library. Extensive indexes have been provided for authors and ancillary contributors, subjects, printers and places of publication, and references which reflect Pepys himself and his bibliophilism. Concordances identify the Pepys books covered by STC, Wing, ESTC and other bibliographies. Dr CHARLES KNIGHTON gained his Ph D from Magdalene College, Cambridge. Condition: Brand new (not pre-owned). SOLÍS Y RIBADENEYRA, Antonio de.
The history of the conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards. Done into English from the original Spanish of Don Antonio de Solis, secretary and historiographer to his Catholick majesty. By Thomas Townsend.
London, T. Woodward, J. Hooke & J. Peele, 1724. - Folio (355 x 235 mm), pp. [xviii], 163, 252, 152, with a portrait-frontispiece of Cortés (after Titian), six plates (one double-page and one folding) and two maps; occasional dust-spotting; contemporary calf; abrasion on front cover, joints cracked but strong. First English edition. Immensely popular, both in Spain and abroad, Solís’s history ‘used the letters of Cortés and the narratives of Díaz del Castillo and López de Gómara, amongst others, but the end result was not the most accurate account of the conquest of Mexico. Solís portrayed the Cortés/Moctezuma struggle with dramatic licence and adopted the viewpoint of the militant anti-Indian school of López de Gómara and Oviedo y Valdés. The resulting English translation was produced in a large folio volume illustrated with elegant engravings. It was offered on subscription from October 1723 onwards and the list of its subscribers . . . reflected [an] affluent sector of the reading community’ (Steele p. 135). The Spanish original appeared in 1684.Alden 724/165; Hill 1601; Palau 318693; Sabin 86487; Steele 38.

Further editions of this collection were published in 1737, 1756, and 1777, as The Beauties of the Stage; whether or not these reprints were updated we have not determined. CONFUCIUS.
The Morals of Confucius A Chinese Philosopher, Who flourished above Five hundred Years before the Coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Being one of the Choicest Pieces of Learning Remaining of that Nation. The Second Edition.
London: Printed for F. Fayram..., 1724. Small 8vo, 152 x 93 mms., pp. [xvi], 136, contemporary sheepskin; small portion missing from lower part of last blank leaf, with partial loss of some contemporary annotations, covers detached, spine worn. A later owner has mounted a nameless bookplate (?Howard of Essingham; with motto "virtus mille scuta" above two heraldic lions), on the front paste-down end-paper, covering up contemporary annotations. The 20th century bookplate of the bookseller John Lawson is also present on the front paste-down end-paper. ESTC notes that this work is "translated and abridged from the Latin translation of Prospero Intorcetta, Philippe Couplet, and others, or from an intervening French translation attributed to Louis Cousin or Jean de La Brune." This copy, which is extensively annotated in a contemporary hand, makes a similar comment on the title-page, noting also that it is "Badly translated" and that it is just a selection from Confucius. In his or her account of the Jesuit origins of the work, the annotator traces its Jesuit origins: "The Jesuits seem to have try'd which c'd lye most in extolling the Chinese." The notes in the text are mostly confined to the first 60 pages, but the rear end-papers are covered with notes, and a folded leaf is loosely inserted between the rear free end-paper and the rear paste-down end-paper, with quotations from various contemporary or earlier authors. Loosely inserted in the same hand is a curious note, 95 x 111 mms., with the designation, "The Real Order of the Ranks of Men," beginning with those who practice Divinity in the top rank, followed by (in rank order), Law, Physick, Mathematicks, Trades, Military, and "The Lowest of all, Sports, Operas, Plays, Races, Boxing, Wrestling, Fencing, Bowls, Dice, Tennis, Cricket, Prisoners [just below Cricket], Riding, Dancing," etc. The annotations would seem to derive from a contemporary Sinologist and would be invaluable for assessing perceptions of Confucius by early 18th century scholars. The work was first published in 1691, followed by a second edition in 1706; this second "second edition" is a re-issue of the 1706 edition (printed for T. Horne), with a cancel title-page, ESTC T140229. scholarship sport prose literature scholarship

GROTIUS, Hugo.
- 2 vols, 4to (255 x 195 mm), pp. [vi], xliii, [iii], 518; 519?1001, [39], with a portrait of Grotius; allegorical engraving at head of dedication; titles printed in red and black; some browning; contemporary calf, joints cracking but strong; small stamp of Dr Josef v. Schey on titles and stamped in gilt on front covers, ?Mr. Le Baron de Reischach? (eighteenth-century: this family was active in Austrian government and diplomacy). First edition of one of the most influential translations of Grotius?s De iure belli ac pacis. Barbeyrac, its editor and translator, had already published an edition in the original Latin: ?for many eighteenth-century readers the definitive version of the book had appeared in 1720, when Jean Barbeyrac issued a new edition, followed by a French translation in 1724 with elaborate notes. Barbeyrac was a leading figure in the French Protestant diaspora, the network of scholars whose families had been driven out of France following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685. He worked tirelessly to put his own version of modern natural law before the European public, and his editions of Grotius built on the success of a similarly elaborate edition of Samuel Pufendorf?s De iure naturae et gentium in 1706. The notes to these editions keyed their texts into all the relevant discussions of natural law from antiquity down to the 1720s, and the two works together quickly became the equivalent of an encyclopedia of moral and political thought for Enlightenment Europe. The French version of De iure belli ac pacis was reprinted steadily through the middle years of the century, and it found an audience beyond the French-speaking polite world in an English translation of 1738? Macintosh, William
Treatise Concerning the Manner of Fallowing of Ground, Raising of Grass-Seeds, and Training of Lint and Hemp, for the Increase and Improvement of the Linnen Manufactories in Scotland. Published for the Benefit of the Farmers in that Kingdom, by the Honour
London: The Society for Improving in the Knowledge of Agriculture; Edinburgh / Printed by Robert Fleming and Company, 1724 Good. Contemporary full calf with blind stamped decorative border tooling to boards and five raised bands to spine. Front free endpaper missing. Small neat prev` owner name to front pastedown and title page corners, a little quill testing has gone on on the rear flyleaf and free endpaper, also there are a few lines of notes to a blank recto after the last fold-out plate. The odd spot of pallid foxing. 173pp. 12mo. Published to encourage the improvement of Scotland`s agriculture and to promote the linen and hemp industries. The first three chapters expound the virtues of English agricultural methods, including dairy farming; chapters 4 and 5 are on growing flax and hemp for textiles; chapters 6 and 7 are on spinning and weaving these fibres; chapter 8 on bleaching; and an appendix prints the texts of various laws concerning linen manufacture, planting, and ferries, bridges and highways. Halkett and Laing attributed the book to the Jacobite leader William Mackintosh of Borlum, under whose name it is still often catalogued, although it now generally thought that Robert Maxwell (1695-1765), Secretary of the Society of Improvers in the Knowledge of Agriculture, under whose auspices the book was published, was largely responsible for writing it. Chapters 5-8 reprint Louis Crommelin`s Essay towards the improvement of the hempen and flaxen manufactures in the Kingdom of Ireland (Dublin, 1705), who is identified as `the Founder of the Linen-Manufactory in Ireland, about the Year 1700`. The plates are especially interesting, and lacking from a number of copies (presumably a remainder issue was put out without plates). They show the details of `A French Loom`; `A Loom call`d Estille`; a `Dutch Loom`; and `The Tools for a Flax Dresser`. Several views of the looms are shown, and the parts described in detail in the letterpress on the facing pages. ESTC shows that this work is fairly widely held in libraries, though many copies lack the plates. However Crommelin`s work is very rare, with copies of the first edition only at Folger and Huntington outside Ireland and the UK; selections were printed at Glasgow in 1725 (NLS only) and there was a Dublin reprint in 1734 (Columbia and Huntington only outside Ireland and the UK). `In the eighteenth century a number of works on flax and hemp were published in Scotland, one of the earliest of these being A treatise concerning the manner of fallowing ground, raising of grass-seeds and training of lint and hemp. This was published in Edinburgh in 1724 by the Society of Improvers in the Knowledge of Agriculture. This Society had been established in June of the previous year. It worked for practical reforms in Scottish agriculture by making known and encouraging new ideas in husbandry, and by giving advice to members on improving their lands. Its first President was Thomas Hope of Rankeillour, or Rankeillor, who had travelled widely and had studied farming methods in England, France, Flanders, Holland, and other countries.` Henrey. Literature: A.J. Durie, The Scottish Linen Industry in the 18th Century (1979) pp. 14-16; Blanche Henrey, British Botanical and Horticultural Literature before 1800 (3 vols, 1975), II, pp. 603-605.

London H Moll, T Bowles, C Rivington and J Bowles 1724. A relatively scarce Moll atlas, which appears infrequently at auction (only 5 times in the last 35 years on ABPC). Complete with 48 county maps plus two folding general maps. Bound in contemporary panelled dark brown calf. Some marginal wear and scuffs to boards. Couple of small areas of surface loss due to slight worming. Rebacked some while ago with raised bands and gilt fleurons to spine compartments. Gilt spine titles on a brown morocco spine label. Minor superficial worming to centre of top compartment. Corners a little bumped. Bookplate of Lord St. Helens to front pastedown. Maps generally very tidy and intact with no staining or foxing. VERTUE, George.
A Plan of the Great Oke call’d the Green-Dale Oke in the Lane near Welbeck in Nottingham Shire. These Draughts taken 31 August 1727.
First edition of Vertue’s delightful and rare plates recording the result of a high-spirited wager between Vertue’s patron Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford and the Duke of Portland in 1724. Oxford bet his dinner companion that he had a tree on his estate with a trunk wide enough to drive a coach and six through. Portland accepted the bet, and a steward was duly instructed to cut such an opening overnight into the Greendale Oak in Welbeck Park, Nottinghamshire. Welbeck had always been famous for its tremendous oaks, and furnished timber used in the building of St. Paul’s Cathedral and York Minster. The next morning Lord Oxford drove a coach and six through the Greendale Oak. In 1727 Lady Oxford had a cabinet made from the oak taken from the heart of the tree, which had inlaid illustrations of the Greendale Oak and its tunnel. The cabinet also displayed a quote from Ovid, and a quote from Chaucer, which Vertue reproduced on his plates no. II and no. IV respectively. The mutilated Greendale Oak survived until well into the 20th century and was thought to have been older than a thousand years.Vertue’s plates show the tree from three sides with a lone rider and a coach driving through. The first plate shows a cross section of the tree trunk recording the height of the tunnel at more than 10 feet, the width at 6 feet and the length at 12 feet. The first plate also incorporates the title lettering, Vertue’s initials, Lord Oxford’s coat-of-arms, and a map of the location.David Alexander, George Vertue as an engraver, no. 656-60 (curiously dates the set of plates as from ‘1733’, no explanation given why this should be; we would date it nearer ‘1727’ when the cabinet was made), in Walpole Society, vol. 70, 2008; COPAC record only the British Library copy. Folio, 5 engraved plates by and after Vertue (numbered I-V), measuring 355 x 210 mm, four of which are on a full sheet, while the last is on a smaller sheet, inlaid to fit the size of the other sheets (490 x 325 mm); two with a little dust spotting in the margins, but very good impressions; bound by Birdsall & Sohn, Northampton, c. 1900, in dark green half morocco and marbled side, gilt lettered spine. Bookplates of James Ward (dated 1892); and bookplate of William Allen Potter.

WOLLASTON, WILLIAM
The religion of nature delineated
London reprinted, 1724. Second edition, 4to, pp. 218; woodcut vignette on title showing a printer in a tri-cornered hat at work at a press, 5 woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials; neat early 2" tape repair in blank gutter margin of title, else good and sound in full contemporary paneled calf perfunctorily rebacked. Benjamin Franklin worked as typesetting for the third edition of this book (1725) which inspired his own "little metaphysical piece," A Dissertation on Liberty and Necessity, London, 1725. It has always been tempting, however unlikely, to ascribe the errata on the last page in this second edition to Franklin: "These [errata] are such as were collected in haste, but there are more; primarily in respect of Greek and Hebrew letters, accents, points, &c. and perhaps things of greater importance: tho it is hoped only such as a reader may easily correct or will readily forgive.

SACCHETTI FRANCO
DELLE NOVELLE. IN FIRENZE, S.N., 1724
New edition. Frontispiece; pictorial title; coat-of-arms; nine full page plates engraved by N. le Mire from drawings by Charles Eisen; text engraved by Drouot. With a bookplate. This scarce, early work which was published anonymously was inspired by the author's lover, the Marquise de Grave. It is a mildly indecent erotic fantasy which was also a satire on the court of the infant Louis XV. It originally appeared in the periodical, Bibliothèque Francaise, published in Amsterdam in 1724. Purporting to be a translation from the original Greek, the narrator describes Aphrodite's temple at Gnide as well as a visit to the Cave of Jealousy and the healthy atmosphere of the Temple of Bacchus.

? Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt, Band 2 anfangs stärker. Gutes Exemplar. ? Cioranescu 40139 (Lévesque). Barbier II 706.

CONFUCIUS.
The Morals of Confucius A Chinese Philosopher, Who flourished above Five hundred Years before the Coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Being one of the Choicest Pieces of Learning Remaining of that Nation. The Second Edition.
