CONFUCIUS
The Morals of Confucius A Chinese Philosopher, Who flourished above Five hundred Years before the Coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Being one of the Choicest Pieces of Learning Remaining of that Nation. The Second Edition
      London: Printed for F. Fayram..., 1724. . Small 8vo, 152 x 93 mms., pp. [xvi], 136, contemporary sheepskin; small portion missing from lower part of last blank leaf, with partial loss of some contemporary annotations, covers detached, spine worn. A later owner has mounted a nameless bookplate (?Howard of Essingham; with motto "virtus mille scuta" above two heraldic lions), on the front paste-down end-paper, covering up contemporary annotations. The 20th century bookplate of the bookseller John Lawson is also present on the front paste-down end-paper. ESTC notes that this work is "translated and abridged from the Latin translation of Prospero Intorcetta, Philippe Couplet, and others, or from an intervening French translation attributed to Louis Cousin or Jean de La Brune." This copy, which is extensively annotated in a contemporary hand, makes a similar comment on the title-page, noting also that it is "Badly translated" and that it is just a selection from Confucius. In his or her account of the Jesuit origins of the work, the annotator traces its Jesuit origins: "The Jesuits seem to have try'd which c'd lye most in extolling the Chinese." The notes in the text are mostly confined to the first 60 pages, but the rear end-papers are covered with notes, and a folded leaf is loosely inserted between the rear free end-paper and the rear paste-down end-paper, with quotations from various contemporary or earlier authors. Loosely inserted in the same hand is a curious note, 95 x 111 mms., with the designation, "The Real Order of the Ranks of Men," beginning with those who practice Divinity in the top rank, followed by (in rank order), Law, Physick, Mathematicks, Trades, Military, and "The Lowest of all, Sports, Operas, Plays, Races, Boxing, Wrestling, Fencing, Bowls, Dice, Tennis, Cricket, Prisoners [just below Cricket], Riding, Dancing," etc. The annotations would seem to derive from a contemporary Sinologist and would be invaluable for assessing perceptions of Confucius by early 18th century scholars. The work was first published in 1691, followed by a second edition in 1706; this second "second edition" is a re-issue of the 1706 edition (printed for T. Horne), with a cancel title-page, ESTC T140229.

MUGGLETON, LODOWICK
A TRUE INTERPRETATION OF THE WITCH OF ENDOR Spoken of in 1 Sam. XXVII. begin. at the 11th Verse. Shewing, 1. How She and all other Witches do beget or produce that Familiar Spirit they deal with, and what a Familiar Spirit is, and how those Voices are procured, and Shapes appear unto them, whereby the Ignorant and Unbelieving People are deceived by them. 2. It is clearly made appear in this treatise, that no Spirit can be raised without its Body, neither can any Spirit assume any Body after Death; For if the Spirit doth walk, the Body must walk also. 3. An interpretation of all those Scri...
      Printed by Subscription 1724, reprinted London: 1793 8vo. 4 x 6.2 inches. [iv] + 58 pp. A-G4, [H]-[H3]. Sewn without binding as issued, Some exterior griming but generally clean . Lodowick Muggleton (1609-1698), the religious thinker who gave his name to Muggletonianism, was a journeyman tailor of the City of London. At the time of the great surge of radical religious groups, including the Ranters, in the early years of the English republic in 1650-51, he and his cousin John Reeve proclaimed themselves to be the Two Witnesses of the Book of Revelation; their task was to fulfill the Third Commission of God, following those of the Old and New Testaments. After Reeve’s death in 1658, Muggleton assumed the role of the sect’s leader and began to publish and travel to meet other believers; one of these, a Kentish woman, became his third wife. Muggleton’s anti-trinitarian views and vehement opposition to Quakers led to his trial for blasphemy during the term of office of a Quaker Lord Mayor. In 1676 he was fined and sentenced to the pillory and his books were ceremonially burnt by the common hangman. His autobiography, The Acts of the Witnesses, appeared in 1699. The Witch of Endor was first published in 1669. again in 1724 and was reprinted as the third edition in 1793 (with only three copies recorded by E.S.T.C.) It sets out Muggleton’s denial of the existence of ghosts, witches and of similar grounds for fear or superstition (and because there is no all seeing eye of God, who takes no notice of his creation on a day to day basis, no reason exists for prayer, formal worship or preaching). He believed that there was no soul without a body and no interim existence of the spirit until the final resurrection: ‘For this I must tell the Reader, that there is not a quarter of an Hour’s time to the Dead to his rising again...though a Man have been dead five thousand Years, yet it is not a Minute of an Hour to him that is dead. For all time belongs to the living: for after Death there is nothing but eternity...Therefore let that vain Conceit that is in most People fall, of Spirits going to God without Bodies... for I was of that Opinion once myself, when I was zealous in Religion according to the Puritan Way.’ The Muggletonian sect survived for over three hundred years, especially in London and Derbyshire. The key texts were reissued for sect members as in this case, and a complete edition of the works of Reeve and Muggleton was published in 1832. The practice of the formal cursing of those who disparaged the sect fell into disuse, Sir Walter Scott, being one of the last to suffer this for an unwise literary reference; Charles Dickens escaping it despite his use of All-Muggleton in The Pickwick Papers. Discussion meetings and twice yearly holiday feasts to mark the major events of the Muggletonian calendar, were held in the private rooms of public houses. In 1869 a London Reading Room was established but its successor was destroyed in the Blitz. The sect did not believe in proselytising as Muggleton stated, ‘God only opens the door to those who knock themselves.’ Hence it suffered a slow attrition over the centuries until eventually no more adherents were left. The sect was beleved exticint, however an American reasearcher came to a door in Edgerton in the late 20th cantury, and on asking about the Muggletonians was astonished to find herself invited inside and because she had ‘sought the lord’ she was given an interview with a lady who was probibly the last of the Muggletonians Philip Noakes, a fruit farmer of Matfield, Kent was, if not the last Muggletonian, the last surviving trustee of the London. property. He rescued the sect’s archive of eighty eight volumes from the destroyed reading room in 1940 and left it to the British Library. After his death in 1979 (Muggleton Manuscripts BL, Add.MSS. 60158-60256), this deposit helping to revive interest in the history of the sect. Galland, M.
Les contes et fables Indiennes, de Bidpai et de Lokman. Traduites D'Ali Tchelebi-Ben-Saleh, auteur Turc.Oeuvre posthume.
      Jacques Ribou, Paris 1724 - 2 vols. 12mo. XL, (4), 390, (2); (2), 382, (2) pp. Contemporary red morocco, spine ribbed and elaborously gilt with flowers and other figures, gilt calf title-labels, triple-fillet borders on both covers, gilt inner dentelles, g.e. 9 full-page engraved plates illustrating some of the fables. The first author ever of these fables was a Brahman, or Indian wise-man by the name of Vichnolu-Sarma. It is said that he wrote the fables, then called pantcha-tantra, in order to advice the ruler of the Indian empire. And in order not to offend him, he did this in writing stories in which the malign fox and the noble lion are the protagonists. It is clear that the fox stood for the ministers and other people with power, who wanted to undermine the powers of the king, represented as the lion. The king, Dabchelim, was very contented with this work and praised both the author and his work extensively. In the 6th century King Nouchirvan of Persia sent his medic, Barzouyeh to India to obtain this famous collection of fables. Soon, people from Persia, the Ottoman Empire and the Arabic world came to read the work and translate it in their own languages. And though it is unavoidable that changes occur in these processes of translation, the basis, the real meaning or message of the fables has always been the same. In his forword to this work, Galland tells the reader that the Bidpai fables are at that time translated in every language used on the continent, and besides the translations in Arabic and Turkish he mentions translations in Greek, German, Flamish, Dutch, Hebrew, Spanish, Italian and Latin. The Greek and Latin versions, were the first "European tranlations. Siméon Seth made the Greek version already in the eleventh century, whereas the Latin version "Directorium Humanae Vitae" was written by Johannes de Capua, in the 12th or 13th century. The later one based his version on a Hebrew version, whereas Seth based his one on an Arabic text. Troughout the ages fables in general played an important role. Within this fable-tradition, the Bidpai-fables play an important role. Antoine Galland born in 1646, died in 1715. He published a lot of works, of which a considerable part postumous. It is said that of this work, he was only able to finish 4 chapters himself and that Cardonne completed the work. Splendid copy from the library of Ledru-Rollin. Cohen-De Ricci 146 ; Lewine, p. (lists an edition of 1724 with 9 plates, however 3 in the first volume and 6 in the second); Brunet 938; Graesse, p. 422.

RACINE, Jean;
Exemplaire modeste, mouillures marginales. Rahir, Bibliothèque de l'amateur, 601.

      Charles Rivington/The Bible & Crown, London 1724 - pp; [i-v] vi-xii 291-685; [686-688] 689-1068 [17]. Bound in full brown calf with raised bands, blck title piece with title in gilt to the spine. Index at the end of the second volume. Bishop Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715) was from a distinguished Scottish family. During his career he was involved in much of the history of the Scottish Church of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries. The first of his two volume (mainly autobiographical) 'History of His Own Times' appeared in 1724, eleven years after his death. This examination was published in the same year. The pagination is somewhat confusing. The numbering would lead one to believe there was at least one previous volume. A scan of the index at the end of the second volume however shows no page reference below 292, which corresponds with the pagination of the first volume. The boards are in poor condition. The joints are cracked and will not stand regular use. The leather is worn and missing at the top corner of volume one. Although intact, a fair copy only with regard to all faults, mainly with the boards. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

CONFUCIUS.
The Morals of Confucius A Chinese Philosopher, Who flourished above Five hundred Years before the Coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Being one of the Choicest Pieces of Learning Remaining of that Nation. The Second Edition.
      London: Printed for F. Fayram.,. 1724 - Small 8vo, 152 x 93 mms., pp.

      Bologna: Stampa de! Peri, 1724. This work, which deals with anonymous works runs from the Middle Ages to 1723, and includes works by or relating to St. Brigit of Sweden, Swedenborg and others.Item no. 36 is of some interest in that it describes and identifies a Swedish Americanum of 1696 (Church 760), a translation of Luther's Kleiner Catechismus into the language of the Virginian Indians together with a vocabulary and linguistic notes.This is by Johann Campanius Holm (1601-1683), who had actually served as a chaplain at Fort Christina (Wilmington, Delaware) in the 1640s and who translated the Lutheran catechism which was published posthumously by Thomas Campanius Holm his grandson(c. 1670-1702), and Stiernman gives details of the publication and who defrayed the costs (pp.26-27). Modern editions of the book were published by Collijn in 1937 and in New York in 1938 and there have been recent editions of the vocabularies.See H.Sallander Om Anders Anton von Stiernman som bibliografisk författare, Stockholm,1945, which we have not seen; KVK locates a couple of copies in Germany, and there is a copy at the Royal Library, Stockholm.. A 'Centuria secunda' was published in 1726 (copies of both in BL).From the Macclesfield Library (privately purchased) with facsimile bookplate

A TREATISE OF THE PLEAS OF THE CROWN: Or a System of the Principal Matters relating to the Subject, digested under their proper Heads.

Some light browning, contemporary annotations, nicely rebound in modern speckled calf, gilt rule edged raised bands with gilt lettered title label to spine. EST CT126275. William Hawkins (1681/2?1750), serjeant-at-law. ?. His career as a legal writer began as early as 1711 with an abridgement of Coke upon Littleton, which reached a fourth edition in 1822. He is best known in the legal profession for his Pleas of the Crown (1716?21), a copy of which he presented to Oriel. This treatise may indeed have been his principal qualification for the coif. It was the first substantial exposition of English criminal law to be printed since that by Sir Edward Coke (1552?1634), and it represented a distinct advance in terms of analysis and detail. The masterpiece by Sir Matthew Hale (1609?1676), the Historia placitorum coronae, was not published until 1736, and even then it did not supplant Hawkins, being an earlier composition. In the third edition of Hawkins, in 1739, references to Hale were inserted by G. L. Scott. Posthumous editions appeared in 1762, 1771 (by Thomas Leach), 1787, 1795, and 1824 (by John Curwood), and a summary was published in 1728 (second edition 1770) .? ANSTIS, John
Register of the Most Noble Order of the Garter
      1724. FIRST EDITION. ANSTIS, John. The Register of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, From its Cover in Black Velvet; Usually Called the Black Book!. London: John Barber, 1724. Two volumes. Folio, contemporary full brown calf rebacked, black morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers. $2200. Scarce first edition of this record of the most honored of chivalric orders, illustrated with numerous copper-engravings including a frontispiece in each volume; intricate vignettes, tailpieces and historiated initials throughout; twelve plates, including nine full-page depictions of heraldry, in Volume II; and two large, folding scenes of court life in Volume I. Founded by Edward III in 1348, the Order of the Garter is "considered the highest British honor. Legend holds that it was created after an incident in which Edward was dancing with the Countess of Salisbury, when one of her garters dropped to the floor. As bystanders snickered, Edward gallantly picked up the garter and put it on his own leg, admonishing the courtiers in French with what is now the order's motto, 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' ('Shame to him who thinks evil of it')" (Britannica). These volumes, illustrated with numerous copper-engravings including nine full-page armorial plates and two folding scenes of court life, present the history of the Order, documented with extensive membership lists, genealogies and descriptions of ceremony and ritual. A heraldic writer and Garter king of arms, Anstis was in 1715 "suspected of intriguing in the cause of the Pretender, and with other gentlemen was thrown into prison! While Anstis was in prison the office of Garter became vacant by the death of Sir Henry St. George. Sir John Vanbrugh, Clarencieux king-at-arms, was appointed to the vacancy, Anstis' claims being set aside. But Anstis would not submit to this arrangement. He cleared himself of the charge of treasonable practices, and then proceeded to prosecute his claims with the utmost vigor! After much delay the controversy was at last terminated! in favor of Anstis! Shortly before the death of George I, [Anstis] received a patent under the great seal securing the office to himself and his eldest son and the survivor of them! Anstis was a man of the greatest learning and industry! Pope alludes to Anstis in the Imitations of Horace: 'A man of wealth is dubbed a man of worth, Venus shall give him form, and Anstis birth'; and Prior mentions him in an epigram: 'But coronets we owe to crowns, and favor to a court's affection. By nature we are Adam's sons, and sons of Anstis by election'" (DNB). Lowndes, 50. Allibone, 65. Brunet I:306n. Graesse I:41. Occasional small ink marginalia. Scattered light foxing. Mild age-wear, light discoloration to contemporary calf. A near-fine copy. Scarce.

LEGRAND, Marc-Antoine;

Ramsay
(Allan) The Ever Green, being a Collection of Scots Poems, Wrote by the Ingenious before 1600.
      Edinburgh, Printed by Mr. Thomas Ruddiman..., 1724 first edition, 2 Vols., sm.8vo., orig. sprinkledcalf, spines ornamented in gilt within raised bands, red morocco labels sympathetically renewed Alston ix/88; Burns Martin 75; ECSB 158; Rothschild 1729. From the library of William Tytler (1711-1792), lawyer, historian, one of the Edinburgh literati, and editor of The Poetical Remains of James the First, King of Scotland, with his signature on the volume i front free endpaper and his marginal notes in thirteen places. These include i. an extensive note on the identity of Macduncan in “The Battle of Harlaw;” ii. a note identifying Ramsay as the author of the concluding stanzas to Dunbar’s “Tydings frae the Session;” iii. notes that “The Justing and Debate up at the Doun” is according to Lord Hailes The Jousting...at the Drum, “that is Lord Somervilles house above Dalkeith;” iv. ascribe authorship to several poems, some again with reference to Lord Hailes. Tytler would have known Ramsay well, at least by sight: the bookseller-poet did not die until 1758. He was certainly on close and friendly terms with the younger Allan Ramsay, the painter and pamphleteer. The Ever Green contains poems by Sempill, Henryson, Dunbar, James I, and others; chiefly derived from the Bannatyne manuscript and many of them published here for the first time. One political satire, "The Vision," though disguised as an earlier work, is Ramsay's own, and is his best sustained lyric. In publishing this work and The Tea-Table Miscellany, Ramsay was the main agent in the revival of vernacular poetry which was to influence the course of poetry from Ramsay himself through Fergusson and Burns.

Catalogue of the Pepys Library at Magdalene College Cambridge
      Boydell & Brewer Ltd - Pepys's library has been, as he directed, preserved intact at his old Cambridge college since 1724. Between 1978 and 1994 a complete catalogue was published for the first time. The present title, essential to all users of the firs t volume in that series, N.A. Smith's Printed Books vastly enhances the range of information available. The short-title arrangement of Printed Books is replaced by a numerical listing which follows the library's she lf-order; many entries have been extended, and where possible updated with reference to new scholarship; the location of MSS and other material treated elsewhere in the catalogue is also indicated, providing for the first time a p ublished conspectus of the whole library. Extensive indexes have been provided for authors and ancillary contributors, subjects, printers and places of publication, and references which reflect Pepys himself and his bibliophilism. Concordances identify the Pepys books covered by STC, Wing, ESTC and other bibliographies. Dr CHARLES KNIGHTON gained his Ph D from Magdalene College, Cambridge. Condition: Brand new (not pre-owned). SOLÍS Y RIBADENEYRA, Antonio de.
The history of the conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards. Done into English from the original Spanish of Don Antonio de Solis, secretary and historiographer to his Catholick majesty. By Thomas Townsend.
      London, T. Woodward, J. Hooke & J. Peele, 1724. - Folio (355 x 235 mm), pp. [xviii], 163, 252, 152, with a portrait-frontispiece of Cortés (after Titian), six plates (one double-page and one folding) and two maps; occasional dust-spotting; contemporary calf; abrasion on front cover, joints cracked but strong. First English edition. Immensely popular, both in Spain and abroad, Solís’s history ‘used the letters of Cortés and the narratives of Díaz del Castillo and López de Gómara, amongst others, but the end result was not the most accurate account of the conquest of Mexico. Solís portrayed the Cortés/Moctezuma struggle with dramatic licence and adopted the viewpoint of the militant anti-Indian school of López de Gómara and Oviedo y Valdés. The resulting English translation was produced in a large folio volume illustrated with elegant engravings. It was offered on subscription from October 1723 onwards and the list of its subscribers . . . reflected [an] affluent sector of the reading community’ (Steele p. 135). The Spanish original appeared in 1684.Alden 724/165; Hill 1601; Palau 318693; Sabin 86487; Steele 38.

Containing all the celebrated passages, soliloquies, similes, descriptions, and other poetical beauties in the body of English plays, antient and modern, digested under proper topics; with the names of the plays, and their authors, referr'd to in the margin. London: printed by Sam. Aris, for Thomas Butler, 1724. (2)x, 240; (2)358 pp. + an engraved frontispiece by Vander Gucht in each volume. Two vols., 12mo, contemporary panelled calf (some wear, one front cover detached).First edition. An anthology of poetical passages from about 175 plays; arranged alphabetically by subject, from "absence" to "youth." Shakespeare and Dryden are the dominant figures here, but there are many selections from lesser writers as well, even as unfamiliar as Mrs. Jane Wiseman, whose only play, Antiochus the Great, appeared in 1702. Further editions of this collection were published in 1737, 1756, and 1777, as The Beauties of the Stage; whether or not these reprints were updated we have not determined. Last leaf of Vol. II a bit wrinkled; aside from the loose cover, a very good copy. CBEL II, 355.

Fayram..., 1724. Horne), with a cancel title-page, ESTC T140229. scholarship sport prose literature scholarship
