ALBER (Erasmus)]

L'alcoran des cordeliers. Tant en Latin qu'en François nouvelle édition. Amsterdam, aux dépens de la compagnie,
      - 22 engraved plates by Bernard Picart (including two frontispieces and one folding plate), title-pages in red and black. 2 vols. 12mo. Contemporary mottled calf with gilt arms on sides of Marie-Auguste de Sultzbach (1724-1765), gilt and panelled spines, initials "B.P." (i.e. Bibliotheca Palatina) stamped at foot of spines (some minor repairs). 1734. First edition to hold the illustrations of Bernard Picart. The first part of the work was written by the reformer Erasmus Alberus who refuted the various "blasphemies" which he found in the De conformitate vitae beati Francisci ad vitam domini Jesu by Bartolomeo degli Albizzi. The work first appeared in Wittemberg, 1542, under the title Der barfusser Monche Eulenspiegel und Alcoran, with the first French version appearing in Geneva, 1556. In this well illustrated edition the large folding plate in volume one depicts the mystical tree with the 40 "conformités" of St. Francis with Jesus Christ. Provenance: Fine armorial stamp on the covers of Marie-Auguste de Sultzbach (1724-65) who married her German cousin Charles Philippe Theodore de Sultzbach (1724-99), Electer Palatin, Duke of Bavaria, prince of Mors, graf von Veldentz, also a knight of the order of St. Hubert. Voltaire addressed letters to him in his Lettres de M. Voltaire à l'electeur Palatin et au roi de Prusse (1761), after being received at his court in 1753 and 1758 (see Bengesco III, p. 32). Brunet I, 152. Rothschild II, 2024. See Guigard I, p. 122 for a very similar armorial stamp.

Tabula Indiae Orientalis Et Regnorum Adjacentium
An Original Antique Map From Jonathan Potter. Published in Amsterdam, 1724 . A copperplate engraving. Coloured. 66 x 50cms [26 x 20ins] A most attractive example of this detailed chart/map of eastern Africa, southern Asia, including Arabia, India, the Orient to Japan, south-east Asia and Australia, published in Valentyn's "Oost Indien ...". Precisely engraved the map shows Australia (or "Nova Hollandia") as far east as Carpentaria but not to include the Tasman coasts of Van Diemen's Land, consequently a good synopsis of the continent pre-Cook. A scarce map with very pleasing full hand colour. Tooley, Mapping Of Australia, 68.

SCHULTENS, ALBERT (1686-1750)

Origines Hebraeae sive Hebraeae Linguae antiquissima natura & indoles ex Arabiae penetralibus
Excudit Henricus Halma 1724, 1738, Franequerae - Schultens, a Dutch philologist, was born at Groningen. He studied for the church at Groningen and Leiden, applying himself specially to Hebrew and the cognate tongues. His dissertation on The Use of Arabic in the Interpretation of Scripture appeared in 1706. In 1713 he took the Hebrew chair at Franeker, which he held till 1729. Schultens was the chief Arabic teacher in Europe of his time and, in some sense, a restorer of Arabic studies, but he differed from J.J. Reiske and A.I. De Sacy in mainly regarding Arabic as a handmaid to Hebrew. He vindicated the value of comparative study of the Semitic tongues against those who, like Gousset, regarded Hebrew as a sacred tongue with which comparative philology has nothing to do. His principal works were Origines Hebraeae (2 vols., 1724, 1738), a second edition of which, with the De defectibus linguae Hebraeae (1731), appeared in 1761; Job (1737); Proverbs (1748); Vetus et regia via hebraezandi (1738); Monumenla vetustiora Arabum (1740), etc. Small 4to (19 x 16cm), 2 vols., [xx + 372pp] & [xiv + 264pp]. Also bound in are two Orations [1729,1732] by Schultens on the Hebrew and Arabic languages [54pp] & [58pp]. Bound in contemporary vellum.

In a note to the reader on p.[17], Bowen writes, "In this my fifth essay to serve the publick, finding the contracted limits of a single sheet of paper, not sufficient to contain all that in the revolution of a year may be very serviceable to the public; I have at the desire of some friends this year presented you with a sheet and a half." The additional pages include information on tides, the passage of the sun throughout the year, the rising of Venus, a table of distances from Boston to New York, and a description of "how to make a sun dial by which a blind man may know the hours of the days." This is one of two editions published in 1725 attributed to Bowen, the only year in which two separate editions appeared. The other edition, printed and sold in Boston by J. Franklin, was sixteen pages in length and is said to be a pirated printing, primarily of the calculations and eclipse notes. EVANS 2506. DRAKE 3013. NAIP w03634333.

      - Engraved frontispiece, title-page in red and black. Sm. 8vo. [4]ff. 352pp. Contemporary French calf, gilt and panelled back. 1724. Second edition of this work which describes an imaginary journey to the island of the hermaphrodites, published over a century after the first edition of 1605; other editions appeared in 1726 and 1744. The work is biting satire on the court of Henri II, with the author using the concept of hermaphroditism to show the effeminacy of members of the court. It is also an important example in the genre of imaginary voyages, and sets out to portray the journey like an account of a genuine voyage.

Description de l’isle des hermaphrodites.
(8) 352pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

MANOSCRITTO

A very lovely fresh copy retaining all aspects of its original production and ownership. * Third edition, Corrected. First published in 1720, Wood's Institute was the only treatise until Blackstone's Commentaries to furnish a comprehensive view of the common law. According to Holdsworth, it was "the most important and the most popular of his books. It was written, he tells us, to supply the want of a methodical book on English law, which could be put into the hands of students in the Inns of Court and the Universities. " Blackstone says "his work is undoubtedly a valuable performance; and great are the obligations of the student to him, and his predecessor Finch, for their happy progress in reducing the elements of law from their former chaos to a regular methodical science.
