First edition of Jean Barbeyrac's esteemed translation of Grotius' great book, the foundation of modern international law. The first French translation was done by Antoine de Courtin and published for the first time in 1687, and republished in 1688 and 1703. Umfangreiche Sammlung von Cantatilles, die separat in einem Zeitraum von mehreren Jahren erschienen. - Sehr selten, in RISM ist nur 1 Exemplar bekannt (L 1724; Washington, Library of Congress - genau in dieser Zusammenstellung; Einzelhefte sind ebenso selten). - Nach der kurz währenden Mode der französischen Solokantate feierte die Gattung in Form der "Cantatille" Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts noch einmal eine Blütezeit, wobei der aus Tours stammende Louis Lemaire (ca. 1693-1750) der bedeutendste Komponist dieses Genres war. Wie der Name "Cantatille" schon andeutet, handelt es sich dabei um eine knappere, beschränktere Erscheinungsform der Kantate, aus zwei oder drei rezitativisch verbundenen, meist in Rondoform gehaltenen, Arien bestehend, die beim damaligen Publikum sehr beliebt war. Zwar bleibt manches in seinen ca. 66 Cantatilles stereotyp, jedoch zeigt Lemaire in formaler Hinsicht "ziemliche Gewandtheit; namentlich die Art, wie er die knappen ariosen und rezitativischen Sätzchen zu einem Ganzen verbindet, ist nicht ohne originelle Züge (...)." (Schmitz, Geschichte der Kantate, S. 205). - Vorliegender Sammelband enthält folgende Titel: Endimion, Le Sacrifice d'Amour, La Constance, Le Retour du Printemps, Ariane, L'Este, Boree, Iris, L'Automne, L'Hyver - L'Aurore, La Bergere impatience, Acis, Hebe, Le Sommeil de Climene, L'Amante persuadee. - Gelegentlich leicht fingerfleckig, im hinteren Teil fehlt möglicherweise ein Anzeigenblatt, Vorsätze mit eltem Papier erneuert, gut erhalten. - RISM L 1724 - nicht bei Hirsch u. With 2 engr. title vignettes, 3 (one armorial) head-pieces, 3 engr. initials, and 70 copper plates, all engr. by Bernard Picart. XXI, (1), 97, (1) pp. Small folio. Contemp full calf over six raised bands. Spine richly gilt, with label. Covers framed by gilt stamped floral fillet. Outer edges gilt.. First and only edition, dedicated to Emperor Charles VI, King of Spain (1685-1740). From the library of the Duke of Sachsen-Teschen (ms. note on flyleaf) with his shelfmark on first paste-down. Though not mentioned at any place in the book, the Latin text was mostly written by Francesco Valesio and was translated into French by Henri-Philippe de Limiers. The great diplomate and antiquarian Philippe de Stosch (1691-1757) travelled much around Europe, was received by Emperor Charles VI in Vienna and lived in Rome, where he worked for Pope Clement XI and where he edited the present "tour d'horizon" around the most famous European gem collections of his time, a work which greatly promoted the public renown of antique art work. After the death of Stosch, Winckelmann edited a catalogue of the personal collection of this passionate and erudite antiquarian. - Cohen/de Ricci 959; Lewine 516; Sander 1553; Brunet V, 552 ("Ouvrage assez recherche"); Querard, La France litteraire IX, 273; Ebert 21801; Cicognara 3016; Hoefer XLIV, 525 ("ouvrage d'un grand merite"); Sinkankas 6379. - First inner hinge loose. Augsburg, (1724).. Folio.. ** Großformatige Kupferstiche mit Uhrendarstellungen. "Die künstlerisch reizvollen Blätter" (Maurice) stellen barocke Entwürfe von prunkvollen Standuhren mit meist komplizierten Indikationen dar. Jeder Kupferstich zeigt eine Uhr innerhalb eines barocken Zimmers, beleuchtet durch seitlichen Lichteinfall. Von besonderem Belang bei dieser Kupferstichfolge ist die Abbildung der astronomischen Uhr, die "durch den berühmten P. Kicherum (Athansius Kircher) zu Rom vorgestellt worden (ist)" (aus der Bildbeschreibung). Der Architekt und Mathematiker J.J. Schübler (1689-1741) aus Nürnberg "verfügte über reichste Erfindungskraft" und schuf sich einen klangvollen Namen durch seine Bücher zu Architektur, Sonnenuhrkunst und Ornamentik. Der Nürnberger Kupferstecher J. Wolff unterhielt einen bedeutenden Kupferstichverlag, war aber auch "laut Stetten Uhrmacher" (Thieme-B.) - Ornamentstich-Slg. Berlin # 98 - Thieme-B. 30, 309 bzw. 36, 206f. - Maurice, Dt. Räderuhr I, Abb. 119-122.* Größe der Darstellung (Plattengröße): 29,5 x 19 cm; Blattgröße: 41 x 24 cm. Im äußeren, weißen Rand eine Ecke mit leichtem Wasserrand. Sehr breitrandig, Büttenrand noch allseitig vorhanden. Schöne, saubere Blätter, zumal in dieser Erhaltung selten.

Pergamentbände der Zeit mit hs. Rückentitel. Folio (220:315 mm). Erste Ausgabe. Die Chronik des Zisterzienserstifts Zwettl von seiner Gründung 1083 bis zum Jahre 1700 bildet das Gegenstück zur Melker Klosterchronik von 1702. Bernhard Linck, "seit 1646 Abt von Zwettl, hatte bei Lebzeiten das Werk nicht herausgegeben; lange Zeit nach seinem Tod wurde das Manuskript aufgefunden, ergänzt und mit Stichen von Matthäus Vischer gedruckt". Tatsächlich gehören zu dem Werk 15 Stemmata und nur ein Stich: die schöne, oft fehlende Karte, die das Stiftsgebiet aus der Vogelschau zeigt (hier darin winziger Einriß). So komplett: Die teils angegebene Zahl von 16 Tafeln beruht offenbar auf Zuzählung der Karte; ein Vergleichsexemplar mit 16 Stammtafeln nirgends nachweisbar. - Titel mit zeitgenöss. Besitzvermerk der Wiener Unbeschuhten Augustiner; am vorderen Innendeckel späterer hs. Signaturvermerk; Rücken mit entspr. Signaturschildchen. Noch im Jahr der Fertigstellung als Geschenkexemplar des Stifts Zwettel an die Augustinerbibliothek übergeben; beide fliegenden Vorsätze mit eigenh. Schenkungsvermerk des Zwettler Abtes Melchior: "Reverendissmus, Perillustris ac Amplissimus D[omi]nus D[omi]nus Alchior Abbas Zwetlensis Bibliothecae FF. Eremitarum Discalc. S. P. Augustini Annales hos benefice donavit Anno Christi 1724". - Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt bzw. braunfleckig, teils auch schwach wasserrandig. "With his 'Experiments concerning the Degrees of Heat' Fahrenheit perfected the modern instrument, his principal innovation being a 'fixed point' of departure, namely the temperature to which water can be cooled when mixed with ice and salt. This he called zero. At the ends of his scale were normal human blood-heat-which he took as 96°-and normal freezing point of water, 32°. Nach Frankreich zurückgekehrt, trat V. im Jahr 1677 in den Benediktinerorden (Congrégation de S.Maur) ein und absolvierte sein Noviziat in der Abtei Saint-Florent-de-Saumur. Anschließend studierte er humanistische Wissenschaften unter der Leitung von Jacques Lopin im Kloster Saint-Martin von Marmoutier sowie Theologie unter Michel Piette im Kloster Saint-Vincent-du-Mans. Im Jahr 1682 legte er Profeß ab und kam in die Abtei von Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Unzufrieden mit seinem Prior A. de Loo, der gegen die wissenschaftlich arbeitenden Mönche eingestellt war, weil sie durch die Studien von ihren religiösen Pflichten abgelenkt wurden, verließ V. Ende Februar 1696 heimlich die Abtei und versteckte sich in Paris im Haus eines protestantischen Freundes namens Groddek. Anfang Mai 1696 begab sich V. nach Basel. John Colet (c.1467 - 1519) anticipated Protestantism in that he attacked abuses and idolatry in the Church, believing that the study of the Bible was the only route to holiness. A case of heresy was brought against him by the Bishop of London but this was dismissed. He went on to become Dean of St Paul's. A leading exponent of Humanism and friend and patron of Erasmus, he included among his other achievements the endowment of St Paul's school in 1509-12 using the fortune he inherited from his father. Erasmus Smith was born in Leicestershire in 1611. An alderman of the City of London, he became an army contractor in 1650 at the height of the Cromwellian wars (1649-53) in both Scotland and Ireland. Like many others like him, Smith was awarded land in Ireland under the Settlement of Ireland Act of 1653. He expanded his holdings and eventually held estates in counties Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, Sligo, Louth, Westmeath and Dublin. Unlike his counterparts who exploited the native population, Smith was driven by his Christian ideals and the belief that ignorance made the Irish unruly. It was with these motives that in 1669 he founded The Erasmus Smith Trust, confirmed by Charter of Charles II, which appointed, "governors of the schools founded by Erasmus Smith Esq".According to the Erasmus Smith Archive in Dublin, the Charter states that there should be 32 Governors, including several bishops and archbishops and the Provost of Trinity College Dublin. Their task was to use the money raised from the estates to establish five grammar schools and schools for the children of tenants of the estates. Revenue was also put to other charitable uses including scholarships to Trinity College Dublin. Grammar schools were established in Tipperary, Galway, Drogheda and Ennis. In addition to the children of tenants on Smith's estates, 20 poor children could also be admitted. Catholics were encouraged to attend these schools but were required to receive instruction in the Doctrines of the Established Faith. The students were taught Latin, Greek and French grammar as well as algebra, arithmetic and literature. The children of the poor tenants were provided with at least the rudiments of reading, writing and counting. William Hawkins (1681/2?1750), serjeant-at-law. ?. His career as a legal writer began as early as 1711 with an abridgement of Coke upon Littleton, which reached a fourth edition in 1822. He is best known in the legal profession for his Pleas of the Crown (1716?21), a copy of which he presented to Oriel. This treatise may indeed have been his principal qualification for the coif. It was the first substantial exposition of English criminal law to be printed since that by Sir Edward Coke (1552?1634), and it represented a distinct advance in terms of analysis and detail. The masterpiece by Sir Matthew Hale (1609?1676), the Historia placitorum coronae, was not published until 1736, and even then it did not supplant Hawkins, being an earlier composition. In the third edition of Hawkins, in 1739, references to Hale were inserted by G. L. Scott. Posthumous editions appeared in 1762, 1771 (by Thomas Leach), 1787, 1795, and 1824 (by John Curwood), and a summary was published in 1728 (second edition 1770) .? "An adherent of the iatro-mathematical school that developed under the aegis of Newtonianism during the early eighteenth century, Tabor attemped to incorporate medical animism into a mathematical framework in his Exercitationes Medicae (1724). He accepted the rational soul or anima, which presumably induced and controlled the activities of living organisms, as the fundamental cause of physiological processes. Because the anima manifested itself through the movements of bodily parts and fluids according to the established laws of physical motion, however, Tabor held that the primary task of medical theory was the calculation of the size, shape, and movement of organic structures While maintaining that the anima was the primary force preserving organic systems against decay, Tabor followed John Friend and James and John Keill in admitting physical attraction as an independent force capable of affecting physiological activity. He construed disease, for example, as the process of which the anima, through muscular spasms, fevers, and similar means, restored bodily equilibrium by counteracting the attractive force of foreign and deleterious particles." A Amsterdam chez Humbert 1724 2 tomes en 1 vol. in-4 de (4)-LIII-366 pp. ; 327-(30) pp., maroquin bleu, dos à nerfs orné de filets dorés, double filet doré encadrant les plats, armes au centre, dentelle intérieure, tranches dorées (reliure de l'époque). Bel ouvrage orné de 16 planches, dont une représentant les médailles avec les portraits des papes d'Avignon et 15 portraits (la Reine de Prusse, Jacques Lenfant, Charles VI, etc.) Le Concile de Pise (1409), devait régler le conflit entre le pape de Rome et celui d'Avignon, mais en fait, la situation s'aggrava car les prélats décidèrent de déposer les deux papes et d'en nommer un troisième, Alexandre V, alors que les deux autres refusèrent de démissionner. Il faudra attendre le concile de Constance pour que la question du Grand Schisme soit réglée. Bel exemplaire relié aux armes de François-Louis de Pesme.

Marbled endpapers. Full brown calf or the era, raised bands, gilt in compartments, old library label at foot of spine. Binding very slightly rubbed, a very good tight, clean copy. An interesting early 18th century French philosophical work and a lovely example of early 18th century French publishing and binding. The main text appears to start on page 3 but the sequence of gatherings and arrangement of the text suggest that there is nothing missing.
