[Early Tea Payment Receipt 1717]:
Manuscript Receipt from William Homer [Horner?], presumed London dealer in tea, addressed to Dr [Alexander Pudsey of Magdalen College, Oxford (c.1636-1721) with letter from Horner.
London, 5 Nov. 1717. From a small archive of Twining Family Papers. One page. crumpled fold marks, spotted, minor damage with loss of a letter or two (from "Pudsey" as addressee), text clear and otherwise complete, as follows: "Dr. Pu[dsey] | Boufght of William Horner Octob. 17th 1717 | Fine Bohea Tea [S[ellin]g?] at 20 [shillings?] -10.0/ Canister 6d ----- 00.6||£0.10.6| || Sir| On ye 17th Ultimo I sent you 1/2 [?] fo ye best Bohe Tea, & yesterday 10 ounces of fine Green Tea by Bartlett's waggon, both which, I hope will come safe to hand, I had no Green Tea that was fine when I sent ye Bohee, otherwise I Had sent them both together. Ye Green Tea now sent is of this last sale, & is superfine, I give you abundance of thanks for y[ou]r late civilities to me at Oxford, & am | Y[ou]r obliged, failthful Servt, Wm Horner | London Nov. 5th: 1717." It is addressed to the Rever[en]d Dr Pudsey | att Magdalen Colledge | Oxford". Pudsey was spoetime Senior Fellow at Magdalen and joined his colleagues in resisting James II's efforts to have Samuel Parker, Bishop of Oxford (and suspected Catholic sympathiser) elected President of Magdalen in 1687. This appears to be one of the ebvents which led to the exile of James (Glorious Revolutuion in the following year). Among the many points of interest of this very early receipt for tea is the fact that the Twining Family have seen fit to preserve it; that it is revealing on the London Oxford Tea Trade; and also reveals a promotional visit to Oxford by a tea (and coffee?) dealer of whom I have yet to find a record. Thomas Twining established a tea house in 1706.

Snape, Andrew. D. D. (1675-1742)
A Second Letter to the Lord Bishop of Bangor, in Vindication of the Former. by Andrew Snape, D. D. Chaplain in Ordinary to His Majesty
London. 1717. First Edition. Full Calf Leather. 8vo. Printed for Jonah Bowyer, at the Rose in Ludgate-Street,1717. - Includes Half-title: 'Dr. Snape's second letter to the Lord Bishop of Bangor'. - The last 3 pages contain advertisements. - REFERENCE: ESTCT25853. - The Bangorian Controversy was a religious dispute in the Church of England during the early part of the reign of George I. Benjamin Hoadly, bishop of Bangor, Wales, delivered a sermon (1717) before the king in which he denied that the church had any doctrinal or disciplinary authority. Advocates of ecclesiastical authority (among them Andrew Snape and William Law) attacked Hoadly's position, and a sharp controversy ensued, in which some 50 writers participated and about 200 pamphlets were issued. Hoadly believed that the churches' authority should be limited to the Kingdom of Heaven. Andrew Snape, headmaster of Eton and like Hoadly a chaplain to the king, launched a counterattack in an open letter to Hoadly, to which Hoadly responded with "An Answer to the Reverend Dr. Snape's Accusation", which inspired this Second Letter from Snape, which in turn gave rise to numerous sequels, including "A Vindication of a Passage in Dr. Snape's Second Letter" and "Farther Remarks on the Reverend Dr. Snape's Second Letter ... By the Author of the former Remarks". ; 69,[3] pages .

Silius Italicus (Tiberius Caius)
Punicorum Libri Septendecim, . curante Arnoldo Drakenborch.
Utrecht: Apud Guilielmum vande Water. , 1717 - additional engraved title (a small reinforcement to edge) and 8 further engraved plates, title-page printed in red and black, just a few light spots, small inscription at foot of title (dated 1808), pp. [xxxii], 880, [26], 4to., contemp. speckled calf, backstrip with five gilt milled raised bands, red morocco label in second compartment, the rest with central gilt lozenge tools and elaborate corner gilt volutés, slightly rubbed at joints and corners, two bookplates and three ownership inscriptions to front endpapers, very good The important Drakenborch edition of Silius Italicus, in an attractive contemporary calf binding. ‘This is the celebrated and elaborate edition of Drakenborch, which ranks among the most sumptuous and valuable of the Variorum classics in 4to. It contains every thing worthy of perusal in the preceding editions; and, for the first time, the notes and emendations of N. Heinsius; also excerpta from an Oxford MS., and one belonging to Puteanus’ (Dibdin). This copy has a string of Swiss ownership and was perhaps bound there: the earlier bookplate is of an untraced member of the Gruner family, but later it belonged to one Thomasset Cap.(?) of Bern, whose note is dated 1770, and who gave it to his grandson George Dayrolles in 1808 (noted on the title). The later bookplate is of Karl Zeerleder, possibly the Swiss politician and mayor of Bern (1780-1851); like other books with that bookplate we have seen, there is also a collation note by ‘F.C.B.’, here dated August 1863 in Ouchy, suggesting that some or all of his collection made its way southwest to Lousanne. The front free endpaper is inscribed "James L Langleys Book Given him by his Father John Langley" The plates include representations of the Copernickan Solar System compared with the Ptolemaick and the Tychonick; Eclipses; a map of the Moon; Jupiter and Saturn; etc. The author was a student of Newton's and later succeeded Newton as Lucasian Professor. Bel exemplaire. 1). INED, 3572..

Coles, E[Lisha].
An English Dictionary, Explaining the Difficult Terms That Are Used in Divinity, Husbandry, Physick, Philosophy, Law, Navigation, Mathematicks, and Other Arts and Sciences Containing Many Thousand of Hard Words Ï¿½ Together With the Etymological...
London: printed by S. Collins, for R. Bonwick [et al. ], 1717. Tenth edition, sm. 8vo, unpaginated; some foxing, contemporary paneled calf rebacked; good and sound. Coles (? 1640-1680) was the author of a number of "useful and necessary books for the instruction of beginners, " among which were his popular A Dictionary English-Latin and Latin-English (London, 1677) which was still in use in schools even after the arrival of Ainsworth's Thesaurus in 1736; and An English Dictionary (London, 1676). "Still in the "hard words" tradition, Coles included thousands of "old words, " obsolete from Chaucer's day. His dictionary contained twenty-five thousand words, eight thousand more than the last, augmented edition of Phillips. He shortened Phillips' already brief definitions in order to include more words and more etymological information. Coles did break new ground in including cant (thieves' argot) and dialectical terms. These, taken from other specialized dictionaries, had never before been included in a general English dictionary" (Landau, Dictionaries, p.43). Alston V, 72.

PITCAIRNE, Archibald (1652 - 1713)
Archibaldi Pitcarnii medici celeberrimi Scoto-Britanni / Elementa Medicinae Physico - Mathematica, libris duobus, quorum prior theoriam, posterior praxim exhibet, in gratiam medicinae studiosorum delineata, & nunc iterum in lucem edita; item Opuscula Medica quibus postremo’ adjectus est Ratiociniorum Mechanicorum in Medicina usus vindicatus per Christianum Strom.
Prima edizione stampata in Italia. (per notizie sull’ autore cfr. John Friesen, A. Pitcairn, D. Gregory and the scottish origins of English tory Newtonianism / 1688–1715, University of Leeds; cfr.       Pp. (ii), 260. With engraved extra title, two engraved frontispieces, 14 engraved hand coloured costumes plates, one large folding hand coloured plate and two folding tables. Further more several engraved pictorial head pieces and engraved decorated initials. The second work comprises an engraved hand coloured title and 15 engraved plates depicting 90 different flags, all beautifully hand coloured. Contemporary calf, with elaborated gilt dentelles, flat spine richly decorated in gilt, expertly rebacked with original spine preserved, g.e. Both works printed at the Mechitarist press in the Armenian monastery on the island of St. Lazarus outside Venice. In 1717 St. Lazarus was given to a group of Armenian monks that had escaped from Turkish persecution. They monks - called the Mekhitarist Order - built a monastery which started to publish a vast number of Armenian historical, philological and literary works. At first it used foreign printing houses but after a few years the community bought its own press. Ghukas Inchichian published many popular almanacs and magazines at St. Lazarus, and he is considered the main precursor of the periodical press in modern Armenian. According to Nersessian other copies of the almanac are bound with the "Flags of all nations" like our copy. A beautiful work in a lovely binding, probably produced at the monastery. (28), 356, (12), 184pp. Most prof. illus. in woodcut (including 7 folding plates hors texte, 44 numbered plates mostly full-page, and two frontispiece portraits). Stout 4to. Contemporary plain heavy wraps. First collected edition of these two treatises, first published in Cremona in 1678 (as ?La nuova architettura famigliare?) and 1683 (?La nuova architettura militare?). Martha Pollak, in the Millard catalogue, points out that these two Capra's books on architecture are among the few theoretical treatises on architecture published in Italy in the seventeenth century. For the most part, his are quite practical in nature. ?Capra, typically, does not take on aesthetic philosophy, since the beautiful has already been linked to taste...and thus relativized. Capra does not consider architecture as the art of building, but as a science with a strong engineering aspect. In his work, he provides the embryonic theoretical distinction between architecture and building. The singularity of Capra's works lies in the localized quality of his references and his focus on the technical aspects of architecture; all his precepts are technological. ? The first work, ?La nuova architettura famigliare? is divided into five books, nominally devoted to the orders (including Tuscan and Composite) but actually concerned with estate management, construction costs and materials, the principles of surveying, geometry and measurement, and, most interestingly, with machinery of all kinds, featuring powerful, full-page woodcut diagrams and illustrations of mills, kneading devices, and ingenious designs for air-conditioning systems, portable perpetual fountains, and an odometer. The second work, ?La nuova architettura militare, ? is divided into three books, of which Pollak considers the second, in which Capra compares Italian and Dutch fortifications, an original contribution to the subject, particularly his scheme for an octagonal fortress. Pether, W.
‘Mr. LEVERIDGE’. Portrait of the singer and composer Richard Leveridge’,with a score in his hand.
      W. Pether, c 1717 Original mezzotint by William Pether after T Frye, from a set dated by John Faberin 1717, 37 x 26 cm. Trimmed just outside the platemark and laid on card. Good condition. Richard Leveridge (19 July 1670 – 22 March 1758) was an English bass singer of the London stage and a composer of baroque music, including many popular songs. He was born in the parish of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, in 1670, and in 1695 became the leading bass singer in the company with which Henry Purcell worked, playing roles such as the magician Ismeron in The Indian Queen, where he sang the major aria "Ye twice ten hundred deities". Two books of his songs were published in 1697 and 1699, and his popular theatre songs also appeared as single sheet music. Leveridge became involved in the new trend for operas in the Italian style from 1705. He then began a short association with Handel in 1713 to 1714, and acted in the first performances of Il pastor fido and Teseo and played Argantes in a revival of Rinaldo. Later in his career, in 1731, he played the role of Polypheme in the first public performance of Acis and Galatea, and several of Handel's Italian arias were published with English translations by Leveridge. From the 1720s he was the leading bass at Lincoln's Inn Fields and then at Covent Garden. He composed over 150 songs, and is best known for the patriotic ballad "The Roast Beef of Old England". In between engagements Leveridge ran a coffee shop in Tavistock Street near Covent Garden, but enjoyed good health and reduced his performances only in the last few seasons before retiring in 1751. He died at his lodgings in High Holborn, London, in 1758.

He was accompanied by the artist Claude Aubriet and the doctor Gundelsheimer. Pitton de Tournefort traveled extensively in the Archipelago, visiting most of the islands in the Cyclades...He also spent a considerable period in Crete before going to Constantinople and Asia Minor, the coasts of the Black Sea and then overland through Armenia to Persia. The travellers returned to Paris in June 1702....The text takes the form of letters to M. de Pontchartrain, who sponsored Pitton's mission. The very fine plates are after Aubriet's drawings, and illustrate costumes, botanical and zoological specimens, views and maps? (Leonora Navari, in the Blackmer catalogue). An elegant copy.

Gleditsch, 1723. Folio (binding 34.5 x 23 x 5.5 cm). Title-page printed in red and black with engraved vignette, five engraved vignettes in text. With the printed folio prize certificate of the Amsterdam Athenaeum Illustre (ancestor of the University of Amsterdam), with a large engraved Amsterdam coat-of-arms by Jan Goeree (engraved by Jacobus Baptist ca. 1700), with printed date 1800 but awarded to the
      - (20), 168; 632 pp. Darlow & Moule 4735; for the binding & prize certificate: cf. Coppens, De Prijs is het Bewijs 39 (Amsterdam folio prize binding and certificate awarded 1717); Spoelder, Prijsboeken, Amsterdam 12 (p. 493, same Amsterdam arms, recorded 1722-1843); for Küster: ADB XVII, pp. 438-439; for Prins: NNBW II, col. 1132. Second edition of Küster's revision of "perhaps the most famous Greek Testament of the eighteenth century" (Darlow & Moule 4725). In 1707 John Mill, principal of St Edmund Hall at Oxford, published a critical edition of the Greek New Testament following Estienne's text of 1550. He also wrote important introductions, dealing with the New Testament canon, the history of the text, including patristic citations, early editions and an outline of the plan for his own edition. The text of the "Prolegomena" is printed in two columns and numbers 1513 sections. The Greek text of the New Testament is printed in two columns in the upper half of the pages, followed by a few lines with internal references, and the critical apparatus in the lower half. The renowned German classicist, Ludolphus Küster (1670-1716), added and rearranged the apparatus. His notes are distinguished by special marks. His revision appeared in 1710 (his preface is dated 1708), followed by the present 1723 second edition and a 1746 third edition. The present copy was bound as a school prize and presented to the future Leiden professor of theology Johan Jacob Prins (1814-1898) on 26 March 1830 by the rector of the Amsterdam Athenaeum Illustre, Willem Jan Zillesen (1774-1834), himself a gifted Greek scholar. It was apparently awarded for Prins's answer to a prize question on 1 Pet III:18-22. Prins went on to take his doctorate at the University of Leiden, which appointed him professor of New Testament studies in 1856, proving the present book a most appropriate gift to this talented student. The prize certificate is dated 1800 in roman numerals at the head, and may well have been printed that early (it is set in the eighteenth-century types of Jacques Rosart and the paper is watermarked "J Honig|&|Zoonen") but it was used only in 1830, with "XXX" added to the date in manuscript. Coppens records no folio prize certificate from the Athenaeum Illustre after an undated one awarded in 1717 (which uses the same Goeree/Baptist plate for the coat of arms). In very good condition, the certificate fine. The binding with some stains, some of the gold rubbed off (mostly at the foot of the front board), and 2 of the 4 silk ties broken off (another repaired), but still generally good. Greek New Testament bound as a prize, with the printed prize certificate filled in, for a future professor of New Testament theology.

Tome I [& Tome II].
Utrecht, Antoine Schouten, 1717. - Together 3 vols, 12mo (170 x 95 mm), pp. [vi], xxiv, 400, [8], [1, errata], [1, blank]; [ii], 423, [8], [1, errata], with two frontispieces; pp. xxxiv, [x], 455, [1, avertissement], [2, errata], [1, avis au relieur], [1, blank], with two portraits and a folding allegorical plate; titles printed in red and black; lower margins of the avis (two leaves) in the first volume cut short; flaw in D1 of the third volume, with slight loss of text, contemporary calf, spines gilt; corners worn or rubbed; the first volume with a short split in upper joint, wear at head and foot of spine, and the fore-edge of its lower cover gnawed; but overall a good, attractive copy, with the early book-labels of Armand de Troisbrioux. First edition of ‘the first expression of an idea – the idea of perpetual peace – that exerted considerable influence on the way in which many Enlightenment thinkers saw international politics, especially Rousseau and Kant’ (Brown, International relations in political thought p. 380). Saint-Pierre was a member of the French delegation which negotiated the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 that ended the War of the Spanish Succession.Harking back to proposals made by Henry IV of France, Saint-Pierre’s project for everlasting peace envisaged a union of the European states (whose borders would be guaranteed), with a Senate composed of representatives from each which would resolve disputes between them; declarations of war would be the prerogative of the Union and commerce was to be free within it. He concludes that if the ‘Union had been established two hundred years ago, Europe would now be four times richer than it is. It will cost very little to establish the Union – chiefly the restitution of unjust conquests – and will cost almost nothing to maintain it, in comparison with the expense of war. Neither the balance of power nor treaties are sufficient to maintain peace; the only way is by a European Union’ (trans. Brown p. 398).‘If the post-Renaissance predicament was the corrupt interlocking of war and commerce, then Europe had to depoliticize its markets. The task was the creation of a European free trade area. In order to achieve that objective, Europe needed political-military unification. Foreign trade could then be downgraded to interregional and domestic trade and freed from the distortions of state rivalry . . . . This option was articulated most powerfully in the Abbé de Saint-Pierre’s project for perpetual peace. Saint-Pierre rejected the Roman Empire as a suitable model for European pacification. For Saint-Pierre, monarchy – that is, a state ruled from a single center – was an unstable form of governance for very large territories. The newly formed superstate had to be a confederacy, a "European Union", mixing modern sovereignty with the federal system that worked rather well in the large but fragmented German territories and in the small republican unions of Switzerland and the Netherlands. Saint-Pierre wanted to put an end to jealousy of state. He believed that by forming a European Union jealousy of trade would also disappear and commerce would become "universal, free, equal, certain, perpetual, amongst all nations". As a consequence, the European Union was bound to experience a great leap forward in economic growth and global commerce . . . ’ (Hont, Jealousy of trade: international competition and the nation-state in historical perspective pp. 27–8).Rousseau, who was commissioned by Saint-Pierre’s family to edit his works and published in 1761 an Extrait du Projet de paix perpétuelle which assured Saint-Pierre’s European reputation, was pessimistic in his assessment of Saint-Pierre’s proposals: ‘Realize his commonwealth of Europe for a single day, and you may be sure it will last forever; so fully would experience convince men that their own gain is to be found in the good of all. For all that, the very princes who would defend it with all their might, if it once existed, would resist with all their might any proposal

Mme. Boivin... le Sr. Le Clerc... et à la porte de l'Opera,1751. Small folio. Bound in modern calf and boards. ([2], 70 p. engraved music score). Minor tape repairs. Title page with ink name and large paraph across title. Light soiling. Condensed score of 13 staves, with libretto by Pierre Laujon. Gravé par Labassée Ballet "divertissement pastoral" divided into 7 scènes, with engraved music and libretto. Instructions include indications where dances are to be performed and what type: (rigodon, contredanses, rondeau, etc.). At the conclusion of the ballet is noted: "On joue la Contredanse en tournant et l'on chante le Choeur sur le Rondeau jusqu'à la conclusion du Ballet". A chronicle of the performances in Théâtre des Petits Cabinets notes in January 13, 1748 was performed les Dehors trompeurs, by Boissy, and a pastorale, Eglé, by Laujon (music by the very young Lagarde, barely twenty). On February 15 [1748], in a reprise of le Mariage fait et rompu by Dufresny, and Æglé. Pompadour appeared (for the first time) in Dufresny's piece as the hostess. De Pompadour also danced the leading role in the ballet. The duke de Luynes gave her good reviews: "Mme. de Pompadour is the only woman who acts very well... Mme. de Pompadour, who played Eglé, sang and acted superbly" (THEATER: Starring.... La Pompadour). The composer, La Garde [Lagarde, Garde] Pierre de (b nr Crécy-en-Brie, Seine-et-Marne, 10 Feb 1717; d c1792), an ordinaire de la chambre du roi, was highly regarded by Louis XV, who made him responsible for the musical training of the royal children. In 1755 he shared this duty with Mion, Maître de musique des enfants de France, and gained the title himself two years later. He was an assistant conductor at the Opéra from 1750 to 1755. "While La Garde seems to have written no compositions during the last 25 years of his life, his airs remained popular for many years. In 1780 La Borde stated that the composer's ‘charming duets and melodious songs will always be sung with pleasure by music lovers. He is, without doubt, the finest composer in this genre'" (Tunley. Ibid). La Garde's reputation as a composer was firmly established when his Æglé, a pastorale héroïque in one act, was performed at Madame de Pompadour's Théâtre des Petits Cabinets in 13 Jan 1748 and reprised in 1750 and 1751. Æglé is indebted to Rameau, particularly in its orchestral style. Two years later it was incorporated into La journée galante as the second act of that opéra-ballet; the first and last acts, of which no scores are extant, were La toilette de Vénus and Léandre et Héro. While there is no record of La journée galante being performed outside court circles, Æglé was performed at the Opéra in 1751 and continued to be played there until 1777 (Tunley). References: THEATER: Starring.... La Pompadour. Article in SUNDRIES: An eighteenth century newsletter N° 27 - April 22, 2006. The article provides an interesting note on the theatre: "In 1747, now Mme. de Pompadour and the king's mistress, in her on-going effort to entertain the king, she proposed building a small theater like that at Etiolles, inside the king's apartments at Versailles. The resulting theater was known as "The Theater of the Small Apartments" or "The Theater of the Small Cabinets"; [Fétis] pseud of Lavallier, Louis-César de La-Beaume-le-Blanc (1708-1780), Ballets, Opera et Autres Ouvrages Lyriques.
