Maria Sibylla Merian
Soursop with Owlet Moth
|
Amsterdam 1705 - Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) Watercolor transfer print Paper size: 20 x 14 31 x 24 framed This spectacular examples of Maria Sibylla Merians work are from one of a very few transfer-print watercolor volumes known to exist. Merian herself prepared the volume. After an uncolored print was made, she applied dampened paper to it, pressing by hand to create an image of the print in reverse. In this volume she chose to block out the plate numbers and then add by hand, to some images, numbers and notations. Merian then painstakingly watercolored the dried paper herself, ensuring that the colors were true to the specimens she had seen in South America, and also allowing her style to emerge with greatest clarity. The volume was not meant for sale, and its intended purpose cannot be known with any certainty. Perhaps it was created as a gift for a wealthy and important patron, perhaps Merian meant to keep it herself. What can be stated without a doubt is that these splendid images represent a unique opportunity to acquire original works by an artist who broke barriers as a woman, as a scientist and artist, and whose accomplishments are no less impressive today than they were in her time.

Philips, John
The splendid shilling
|
[Philips, John.] The splendid shilling. An imitation of Milton. Now first correctly published. London: printed for Thomas Burnet, 1705. (4), 8 pp. Folio, recent wrappers. First authorized edition. A mock-heroic poem, depicting the miseries of a debtor, in fear of duns, who no longer has a shilling in his purse with which to buy tobacco, wine, food, or clothes. Addison called it "the finest burlesque poem in the British language," and Johnson was also an admirer. For a good discussion of the poem's merits, and of its enormous popularity and influence throughout the 18th century, see Richmond P. Bond, English Burlesque Poetry, 1700-1750, pp. 100-110. Philips was reluctant to publish his verse. A version of this poem first appeared without his consent in the 1701 edition of the "Temple of Death" miscellany, from which it was copied a number of times soon afterwards. The appearance of a corrupt folio text early in 1705 prompted the present edition, which is accurate. Foxon distinguishes two printings, with variant settings of sheet B only, but it has not been possible to determine which came first; this one has the correct reading "Eclips'd" in line 31. Some light browning of the half-title, last page a bit dust-soiled, otherwise a good copy. Foxon P247; Bond 7; CBEL II, 563.

Rochester, John Wilmot Earl of
Poems on Several Occasions : With Valentinian ; a Tragedy.
|
London Jacob Tonson 1705. A rare early edition of this famously lewd poet. His work has nevertheless achieved some high praise from the highbrow. Referring to Rochester's perspective, Hazlitt wrote that "his contempt for everything that others respect almost amounts to sublimity." Bound in quarter red morocco with marbled paper-covered boards of c. 1900 with stamped and gilded bands to spine and gilt spine titles. Ends of spine a bit scuffed and worn and joints beginning to split from head. Some wear to corners. Marbled endpapers with bookplate of Ernest Stone Stubing to front pastedown. Would benefit from rebinding. Coupel of minor marginal chips to title page. Paperflaw to bottom margin of A2, not affecting text. (10), xvi, (6), 208, 177-223, (1) pages. Pp.177-208 repeated in pagination; but text and register are continuous. Collated complete. Few tiny chips to margins of a couple of preliminary leaves and final leaf, with no loss of text. Slightly close-cropped but not affecting text, aside from a couple of question marks which are slightly shaved in Valentinian. Some minor toning. Overall a presentable copy of a rare early edition of Rochester's poems. We can send images of this book on request. Early Edition No Jacket Quarter Morocco 8vo - 7.5 Inches; Early Edition. Good

Echard, Laurence
Terence's Comedies, Made English; with his Life; and some Remarks at the End
|
London: J. Print et.al., 1705. Third edition. 8vo. xxxii, 359pp. Full contemporary leather binding with ornamental gilt decoration and gold lettering to spine. Raised bands. Copper plate engraved half-title page. Illustrated title page with red and black lettering. English translation of the works of renowned Latin writer Terence, a.k.a. Publius Terentius Afer (185 B.C.E.-159 B.C.E., see below), including biography. Age wear to binding. Ex-libris plate and owner's writing to inside of front board. Browning throughout, with sporadic foxing. Very minor worming to very few pages, not affecting text. Otherwise clean and tight. In English. Very good condition. On Terence (Source: Enotes):#11;Terence C. 195/185 b.c.-159 b.c. Most of what is known about Terence's life is very uncertain and comes from a second-century biographical sketch by the Roman imperial biographer Suetonius, preserved in a commentary by Donatus, a fourth-century grammarian.Terence's exact date of birth is not known, but he was probably born in Carthage, North Africa, and brought to Rome as a slave when he was very young. He was then purchased by Terentius Lucanus, a Roman senator, who allowed Terence to be educated and eventually emancipated him: according to custom, Terence took his former owner's name upon being freed. He was quickly accepted into the circle of Scipio Aemilianus!a group of wealthy, well-placed young Roman aristocrats enamored of Greek culture and literature. In 159 b.c. Terence sailed for Greece, either to escape criticism at home or to become more familiar with the country. Some biographers claim that he was lost at sea on the way back, but the circumstances of his death remain unknown.#11;Terence is best known for the elegant language, symmetrical plots, and complex, sympathetic characterizations exhibited in his six comedies. Though he has for the most part been viewed as a respected and influential author, Terence has also been criticized by commentators from his own time onward for closely basing his plays on earlier Greek models!a practice some reviewers have interpreted as imitation or even plagiarism. Today most scholars agree that although Terence used the forms and themes of Greek New Comedy, he created a new type of play that transcended its antecedents. Gilbert Norwood, for example, has praised Terence for his "splendid principle of accepting the traditional framework and evolving from it a thoroughly serious, permanently interesting, type of drama.

CHOU, P'ei-ch'un.
BAMBOO PAINTED ALBUM ORIGINAL BY CHOU P'EI-CH'UN, DATED 1705
|
A VERY LARGE ACCORDION FOLDED BAMBOO PAINTING ALBUM [Beijing Kangxi 44: = 1705]. Wood covers, large 37.5 x 39.5 cm., silk over paper title slip with former collector or the compiler's name on title slip reads: Wang Yu, contains 48 fine Sumi ink paintings on fine paper.A STUNNING MANUSCRIPT A superb example of fine Chinese traditional bamboo painting in tones of black, gray [Sumi] ink and off white. The whole work is beautifully painted with several varieties of bamboo painted in the four seasons of the year, including some stunning and poignant snow scenes. * Showing the great variety of bamboo in the wind, rain, snow and other weather conditions. Painted on hand-made Chinese native papers, with traditional wood covers and title slip. Each painting has a pair of two different seals on each, all have the same set of double red seals or chops throughout. . * CONDITION: The work is in remarkably clean and nice condition, each page is clean, no foxing at all. Each painting/page is with pale beige paper border material with the normal wear expected of an item from this period. A good number of page hinges been reinforced with hand-made Washi paper and rice glue to strengthen, still an exceptionally nice example of a collectable and unusual original art work. * RARITY: Most albums of this age, subject and quality have been pulled apart and sold as single art works. By and large a wonderful album in from an early period, complete as the artist issued it, done in a Deluxe large size and impressive style. A treasure for any collector. * TRANSLATION OF THE CHINESE FOREWORD CARTOUCHE BY THE ARITST: This is a direct English translation of the artist's comments found at the beginning of the album: * "I have been drawing this kind of painting in Peking for more than 50 years. Each of my paintings has been very accurately drawn by me and my price for my paintings has been quite fair. I have never quoted two different prices to my clients. My paintings have been quite popular abroad. Recently some shameless people have tried to imitate my paintings and have damaged my reputation by selling imitation copies to my clients. In order to clarify the ambiguity of real vs. imitation copies, I have made a special [second] seal to be put on each of my paintings. * Please note from now on that paintings without a six-character seal denoting [my name] "Pei-Ching Chou P'ei-chu'un hua" are considered imitations. I hope this note will warn all of my clients. * Signed Chou P'ei-chu'n of Peking, Residing outside of Hsuan-Wu gate." * ABOUT THE SEALS: Each painting is nicely cinnabar sealed with two of the artist's authentic seal impressions per the artist's statement above. An original, genuine work of art, properly sealed by the artist, a rare work in excellent condition. * Color scans can be sent by email.Images displayed may not be the actual copy in stock for sale at any given time; if you want to see the exact image of the book or edition in stock, please request this by email and an image will be returned to you by attachment. !! Late 19th c. 1/2 calf over cloth, gilt rules, spine banded, extra gilt; t.e.g, joints and corners rubbed; bookplates of Frank L. Hadley & Alfred M. Hellman; signature of "Geo[rge] Putland" on general t.p., signature of "Donum Annae Salt" on first t.p., Folding frontis.,folding map of Egypt with decorative cartouche,13 full-page plates, some folding by Sturt, Kip, Van Gucht,Nuting, & Platt. Fold repairs to frontis & map, one plate trimmed, 3 plates mave small mold spots. Greenhill, Thomas (fl. 1698Ð1732), surgeon and author. "Greenhill's reputation as an author is entirely based upon his Nekrok deia. Greenhill's central purpose was to reverse the decline of embalming by advocating its restoration within aristocratic burial practices, and by making it the exclusive preserve of surgeons, rather than undertakers and quacks. He proceeded as an antiquary, making his theological, historical, and anthropological arguments with extensive reference to classical texts, patristics, and the scriptures. The work is dedicated to Thomas, eighth earl of Pembroke, who was the dedicatee of John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690). Paid for by subscription, the essay enjoyed the patronage of notable dignitaries, including the archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Tenison. London's medical men also gave the project crucial support; from 217 subscribers, 34 were surgeons, 18 physicians, and 12 apothecaries. The book is divided into three letters. The first is addressed to Charles Bernard, serjeant surgeon to Queen Anne, on the rites of burial and funeral customs. The second, which is addressed to John Lawson, a former president of the Royal College of Physicians and accomplished orientalist, discusses Egyptian embalming techniques within a rich cultural and geographical account of the country. The last letter, addressed to Hans Sloane, a leading physician and secretary to the Royal Society, is Ôa succinct Account of the Pyramids, Subterranean Vaults and Lamps of the EgyptiansÕ (Greenhill, 308). Occasional antiquarian interest aside, embalming continued to decline profoundly despite Greenhill's efforts; no other book was published explicitly on the subject in English during the eighteenth century. Greenhill himself had recognized that the practice had become deeply unpopular. Aristocrats were favouring night-time funerals which avoided embalming, probably from a mixture of religious concerns, fears of live dissection, and, in the case of women, scruples about erotic impropriety. Nekrok deia is a lovely object, the illustrations are fine, and Greenhill's scholarship is impressive. It offers rich evidence on attitudes to death, of early eighteenth-century antiquarianism and Egyptology, and the medical politics of the day, in an accessible and interesting blend." [ODNB]There are two states of this book, this is the one with "printed for the author on the t.p. ESTC T68902. Hilmy I,227. Blake 185. Wellcome III,160.

Signaturschildchen. - Ebert 8868. Brunet II, 1724. Graesse III, 150.

|
!! Adam Christian Thebesius (1686-1732) und die Entstehung derr Vasa Cordis Minima: Biographie, Textedition, Medizinhistorische Wurdigung und Rezeptionsgeschichte ... Archiv - Beihefte (SAr-B)) (German Edition)
|
Franz Steiner Verlag. Hardcover. Zeitschrift für Ostmitteleuropa-Forschung "à a meticulous dossier à Mettenleitner offers historians a detailed look at the world of eighteenth-century medicine and its practitioners." ISIS. Augsburg, Johann Ulrich Kraus, and Johann Christoph Wagner, ca. 1705. Folio, pp. [iv], 22, withfour large allegorical engravings (81 x 161 mm), and numerous type specimens, partly engraved; light browning, and faint dampstaining to upper blank margin of last two leaves; contemporary half vellum over sprinkled boards, from the convent library of the Augustinian Hermits of Vienna, with manuscript note to head of title page. First and only edition of this very rare type specimen by the Augsburg engraver Johann Ulrich Kraus and Johann Christoph Wagner - printing the Lord's Prayer in more than one hundred different languages. In all there are 123 examples of different languages and typefaces, amongst them 23 Asian languages, 6 African, 18 eastern European and 3 from America (Mexian, Poconchi, and Virginian). As is noted in the preface, the work was clearly inspired by Benjamin Motte's Oratio Dominia (1700), and aims to make this more widely available. A list of earlier polyglot versions of the Lord's Prayer is also included. Especially attractive are the large unsigned engravings, in particular one showing putti removing script rolls from shelves and reading them . § § § § Photos sur www.edition-originale.com Ex libraria Gulielmi Broedelet Trajecti ad Rhenum _1717 pet. in 8 (10x15,5cm) (56) 272pp. (42) 2 parties en un Vol. relie

Rochester, John Wilmot Earl of
Poems on Several Occasions : With Valentinian ; a Tragedy
|
London: Jacob Tonson, 1705. We can send images of this book on request. . Early Edition. Quarter Morocco. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - 7.5 Inches.

TRAVEL], [JESUITS], [LITERARY HOAX], PSALMANAAZAAR, George
An Historical and Geographical Description of Formosa, An Island Subject to the Emperor of Japan. Giving an Account of the Religion, Customs, Manners &c of the Inhabitants. Together with a Relation of What Happened to the Author in his Travels.
|
Printed for Mat. Wotton, Abel Roper, and B. Lintott, London 1705 - [56], 288pp, [8]. Lacks map and plate 6, but with the other 14 plates and folding alphabet table. Bound in victorian calf, elaborately stamped in blind and gilt, contrasting red morocco title label. Rubbed, with wear to extremities, chipping to head and tail of spine, some cracking to joints. Marbled endpapers and edges. Bookseller's description of another by the same author tipped to verso of FFEP. Some staining to prelims, occasional ink inscription and marking to text. Repair to edge and verso of alphabet table, plates 1 and 2 shaved. George Psalmanazar (1679?-1763), author and Eastern imposter, claimed to be the first inhabitant of Formosa (present day Taiwan) to visit Europe. Although his true origins have remained unknown, it is thought he was a French peasant and according to his own biography taught first at a Franciscan school and subsequently a Jesuit academy. Travelling in Europe under various guises, including that of an Irish pilgrim en route to Rome, he finally settled upon the Far Eastern identity that was to fascinate London society. Claiming to have converted to Anglicanism, and fabricating an entire cultural tradition for his ficticious homeland, he tapped into prevailing English fashions for exotic travel narratives and anti-Jesuit feeling. This work, his magnum opus, provides geographic, political, cultural and what we would now consider anthropological details - and are a real feat of literary imagination. Basing much of the grisly details of human sacrifice on Aztec and Inca civilizations, he also used embellished accounts of Japan as source material. The 'alphabet' he describes was entirely invented, it was nevertheless recorded as genuine in books of alphabets well into the eighteenth century. Native 'Formosan' men wore no clothing except metal plates to cover genitals, were polygamous, and furthermore entitled to eat their adulterous wives. Dwellings were located underground, with the main source of food being a serpent hunted with sticks. Despite protestations from Jesuit missionaries and learned suspicion from scientific luminaries at the Royal Society, Psalmanazar's hoax was accepted until the posthumous publication of his memoirs in 1764. |
D. Browne et al, London 1705 - Hardcover, 8vo, (xvi) 400 pp. Original blind-stamped eighteenth century calf boards with sympathetic later reback. Raised bands, leather title label with gilt rules and titling and to spine. Marbled endpapers, frontispiece. The full title is 'An Historical, Physiological and Theological Treatise of Spirits, Apparitions, Witchcrafts, and other Magical Practices Containing an Account of the Genii or Familiar Spirits, both Good and Bad, that are said to attend Men in this Life; and what sensible Perceptions some Persons have had of them; (particularly the Author's own Experience for many Years.) Also of Appearances of Spirits after Death; Divine Dreams, Divination, Second Sighted Persons, etc. Likewise the Power of Witches, and the reality of other Magical Operations, clearly asserted. With a Refutation of Dr. Bekker's "World bewitch'd"; and other Authors that have opposed the Belief of them.' This is the scarce first issue, with the author's first name mis-spelled on the title page. The author's personal belief in spirits and other ethereal beings which he perceived around him clearly influenced the composition of this work - which he drew from a wide variety of earlier sources. John Beaumont (c. 16501731) was a English physician with a passion for exotic plants and underground caverns, and a great interest in the occult. The DNB describes Beaumont somewhat unkindly as "a man of considerable reading, of excessive credulity, and a firm believer in supernatural agency. His principal and cer-tainly most curious performance, 'An Historical, Physiological, and Theological Treatise of Spirits, Apparitions, Witchcrafts, and other Magical Practices,' is written in an amusing, gossiping style, and abounds with grotesque tales and illustrations from little-known authors. His personal experience of spirits, good and bad, was long and varied; but he innocently contrives to lessen the effect of his narration by adding that in their frequent visitations 'all would disswade me- from drinking too freely.' Beaumont was convinced of the existance of spirits and was a firm believer in the objective reality of witchcraft, and one of his main aims in writing the work was to refute the work of Balthasar Bekker, whom he suggested "laughs at all these things of this Nature as done by Humane contrivance." His work found some favour amongst those with a similar perspective and a German edition was published in 1721. Early armourial bookplate on front endpaper, more recent personal bookplate on front free endpaper. Contemporary previous owner's name on title page, and name and date (1706) on the first leaf of the text. Another early owner has written her name on the final blank "France Tooker Hear [sic] Book" above the inscription in Latin "hic nomen pono quia librum perdere nolo" ("I place this name as I do not wish to lose this book.") The book has obviously been well read - pages are darkened, corners rounded, and there are one or two old repairs to the pages. Still an attractive in a solid pleasant binding. Overall VG+. Scarce. Rochester, John Wilmot Earl of
Poems on Several Occasions : With Valentinian ; a Tragedy.
|
Jacob Tonson, London 1705 - A rare early edition of this famously lewd poet. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Historical, Physiological and Theological Treatise of Spirits, Apparitions, Witchcrafts
|
1705. FIRST EDITION. BEAUMONT, John. An Historical, Physiological and Theological Treatise of Spirits, Apparitions, Witchcrafts, and Other Magical Practices. London: D. Browne et al., 1705. Octavo, contemporary full brown paneled calf rebacked, raised bands. $2700. First edition of this early account of the supernatural, with wonderful engraved frontispiece of an "Evil Genius," "Good Genii" and "Jews Going Out in the Moonshine" by Michael vander Gucht. John Beaumont was a geologist and physician who lived a retired life at Stone-Easton, Somersetshire, where he practiced surgery. "He was a man of considerable reading, of excessive credulity, and a firm believer in supernatural agency. His principal and certainly most curious performance, An Historical, Physiological, and Theological Treatise of Spirits, Apparitions, Witchcrafts is written in an amusing, gossiping style, and abounds with grotesque tales and illustrations from little-known authors. His personal experience of spirits, good and bad, was long and varied (pages 91-4, 393-7); but he innocently contrives to lessen the effect of his narration by adding that in their frequent visitations 'all would disswade me from drinking too freely'" (DNB). In the preface he acknowledges that "the subject is abstruse, and treated of by few, and that sparingly. If I have more enlarg'd my self upon it, it is that some extraordinary visitations having happened to me, in which I have had a converse with those Genii I treat of, have made so strong an impression on my mind." The last chapter is a "Refutation of Dr. Bekker's World Bewitch'd; and other Authors that have opposed the Belief of [Witches]." Early owner signature of Mary Strode on the title page. A bit of embrowning. Small torn corner from one of the later endpapers. A very good copy.

He is said to have left England at once and to have passed through Germany, making a short stay at Frankfort, where he conversed with Job Ludolphus, who suggested to him several points of topography in the Holy Land which required elucidation. His friends at Richmond, where his uncle, Sir Charles Hedges, had a house on the Green, were left with regret, but he found at Aleppo an English colony, about forty in number, whom he highly praises, and he performed daily service every morning to a devout and large congregation. His celebrated journey to Jerusalem was begun, with fourteen other residents from the settlement, on 26 Feb. 1696-7. They arrived in the holy city on 25 March, the day before Good Friday in the Latin style, and left on Easter Monday (29 March) for Jordan and Bethlehem, but returned again on 2 April. Their second departure from Jerusalem was on 15 April, and the day of their return to the factory was about 20 May. He died, presumably of fever, at Aleppo early in 1701." DNB#11;"Bishop Newton observes of the work and its author," whom it is a pleasure rto quote as well as read, and whose Journal from Aleppo to Jerusalem, though a little book, is yet worth a folio, and is so accurately and ingeniously written, that it might serve as a model for all writers of travels." CHOU, P'ei-ch'un.
|
!! ' This is the scarce first issue, with the author's first name mis-spelled on the title page. The author's personal belief in spirits and other ethereal beings which he perceived around him clearly influenced the composition of this work-which he drew from a wide variety of earlier sources. John Beaumont (c. 1650?1731) was an English physician with a passion for exotic plants and underground caverns, and a great interest in the occult. The DNB describes Beaumont somewhat unkindly as "a man of considerable reading, of excessive credulity, and a firm believer in supernatural agency. His principal and

Raveneau de Lussan, a young Frenchman who whished to see the world, sailed from France for San Domingue in 1679. His indebtedness led him to join the buccaneers in search of his fortune. Raveneau spent several months raiding in the West Indies, and several years raiding the Pacific coast between Guatemala and Chile. He details both the romantic and the bleak sides of the buccaneering profession, interwoven with colorful descriptions of the natives of the regions and a clear picture of the Spanish colonies on the Pacific".
