Madrid, Juan Garcia Infanzon, 1704.

[CHURCHILL, AWNSHAM and JOHN, comps.]
A COLLECTION OF VOYAGES AND TRAVELS.
[CHURCHILL, AWNSHAM and JOHN, comps.]  A COLLECTION OF VOYAGES AND TRAVELS, Some now first Printed from Original Manuscripts.  Others Translated out of Foreign Languages, and now first Publish’d in English  . . .  In Four Volumes . . . .  London: Printed for Awnsham and John Churchill, 1704.  Four volumes.  Folio.  Contemporary paneled calf, stamped in blind.  Text in double-column format.  Two frontispieces, two engraved titles, seventy-eight engraved plates (five double page, forty-eight folding), twenty-three folding maps and plans, numerous illustrations in the text.  Expertly rebacked, preserving most of the original spines, corners bumped and showing, some wear to covers, to preliminaries in Vol. I and to head of spine on Vol. IV, various minor paper flaws throughout (most not affecting text or images).  A very good set of an important early collection of first-hand travel accounts.FIRST EDITION, complete as originally issued in four volumes.  After the death of Awnsham Churchill, the set was reprinted in 1732 with two volumes added, and again in 1744 with two more volumes added by Thomas Osborne.  Unlike other contemporary collections of travels and voyages which were heavily edited and re-written by their compilers, Churchill’s Collection of Voyages and Travels preserves the unadulterated firsthand accounts, and it includes works which are now virtually unobtainable as separate first editions.  “This is a very valuable collection, both for its range and for the fact that it gives the original accounts.  It well lives up to the claims made for it by its editors” (Cox). To view the full description of this item, please contact us.

Cfr. Krivatsy, nn. 576 e sgg. e Olschki, Choix, 8320 sgg. Wellcome, II, p. 85. Hirsch, VI; 438-39. Brunet, I, 610: Ouvrage estimé. PHAEDRUS.
Educating the young regent's mother, Ezopische Fabelen.
      F. Halma,, Amsterdam, 1704 - 4to. Contemporary vellum. With engraved printer's device on title, engraved armorial head-piece and large engraved historiated initial to the dedication, 2 fine engraved head-pieces, 2 large engraved historiated initials, and 2 large engraved tail-pieces to the preface and the "Life of Phaedrus", and 6 large historiated initials, 5 large engraved tail-pieces, 5 additional engravings, including 2 portraits of the poet, and 104 engravings by J. van Vianen to the fables in text. (34), 198, (10) pp. First edition, second issue with the proper date 1704, of the Dutch counterpart to the Latin Phaedrus by David van Hoogstraten, produced for the young Dutch Prince of Nassau, published by Halma in 1701. The present Dutch edition is dedicated to the young stadtholder's mother, Princess Amelia, who reigned for her under-age son from 1696 to 1707, and was obviously meant for the mother to further the education of her son. Van Hoogstraten changed his comments to the text accordingly. Instead of the philological digressions of the Latin edition, historical, mythological and poetical examples are now given to explain the moral of the fables. The index also is considerably shortened. As for the illustrations, the richly engraved head- and tail-pieces, as well as the historiated initials came from the Latin edition, but the plates by J. van Vianen, which originally consisted of several medaillon scenes to one plate, were now cut up into single medaillon illustrations and put at the head of each fable separately. The present Dutch edition and its Latin counterpart are among the most interesting as well as the most beautiful and richly illustrated Phaedrus editions in The Netherlands. Rather used copy, lacking the frontispiece and portrait.- (Binding sl. rubbed and stained, recased with new endpapers, heavily browned; tear in one leaf rep.; sl. waterst.). Landwehr, Emblem & Fable Books, F178; Fabula Docet 69; Geerebaert CXXV, II; The Fox and the Grapes, Checklist Aesopic Fables Pierpont Morgan Library, 1704; this Dutch ed. not in Buijnsters, BNK; cf. Buijnsters, BNK, 1282 (undated Latin-Dutch ed., erroneously stated not to be listed in Geerebaert, but is Geerebaert CXXV, II b). [Attributes: First Edition]

Harris, John.
Lexicon technicum: Or, an universal English dictionary of arts and sciences. 2 vols., 1704-10.
London: Dan Brown, Tim. Goodwin, John Walthoe [etc.], 1704. Harris, John (1666?-1719). Lexicon technicum: Or, an universal English dictionary of arts and sciences: Explaining not only the terms of art, but the arts themselves. 2 vols., folio. Unpaginated; collation available on request. Engraved portrait frontispiece by G. White after R. White in Vol. I, 14 engraved plates, text woodcuts. London: Dan Brown, Tim. Goodwin, John Walthoe [etc.], 1704-1710. 320 x 205 mm. Paneled calf ca. 1704-10, rebacked, endpapers renewed. A few plates toned, but a fine copy. Armorial bookplate of John Manley, Esq. in Vol. II. First Edition. The first English dictionary of arts and sciences, and the earliest modern encyclopedia of science. Harris was the first to make the distinction between "word-books" (dictionaries) and "subject-books (encyclopedias), and his Lexicon Technicum is the first English encyclopedia to be arranged in alphabetical order. Harris relied heavily on the writings of Isaac Newton as a source, quoting lengthy excerpts from them under such headings as "Attraction," "Colour," "Fluxions," "Gravity," "Light," and "Motion." The introduction to Vol. II contains the first printing (in Latin and English) of Newton's "De natura acidorum," his only published work on chemistry; and the articles "Quadrature" and "Curves" give the first English translations of the "Two treatises" from Newton's Opticks. The subscription list in Vol. II has Newton down for a large paper copy of the Lexicon. Complete sets of the Lexicon Technicum are extremely rare on the market. Babson Supplement, p. 55.
Madrid, Juan Garcia Infanzon, 1704. Little is known about Luykens who apprenticed for the painter Martinus Saeghmolen; he appears to have abandoned his early libertine ways and former associates after a religious conversion at the age of 26.

Barlaam und Josaphat - The History of the five Wise Philosophers: Or, the Wonderful Relation of the Life of Jehosaphat the Hermit, Son of Avnerian King of Barma, in India. The Manner of his Conversion to the Christian Faith, and the Horrid Persecutions he suffer'd for the same. With the Miracles he wrought: And how, after his turning Hermit, he Liv'd in a Cell in the Desart Thirty Six Years. A Treatise both pleasant, profitable & pious. By N(icholas) H(errick) Gent. 6 Bl., 128 S. 12°. Titel in doppelter Einrahmung. Hübscher Lederbd im Stil d. Z. auf 5 Bünden (sign. G. v. Hahn) mit Rückenschild und Rückenvergoldung. Marmorpapiervorsätze.
London, Eben. Tracy, 1704. – Mit dem Anzeigenblatt (Bl. 6), das nicht Bücher ankündigt, sondern "a most Excellent Natural Balsam . to excel that of Peru and Tolu, in Curing of divers Diseases". Durchgehend stärker gebräunt, Ränder teils fragil mit kleinen Randdefekten. – Nicht im ESTC.

Contemporary notes. Text in fine condition. . J. Hughs for R. & J. Dodsley,. With a frontispiece and an illustration in each volume. Dodsley, Robert (1704Ð1764), bookseller and writer. "The advertisement to Dodsley's second major contribution to English literary history, A Collection of Poems by Several Hands, showed similar intent and foresight: Ôto preserve to the public those poetical performances, which seemed to merit a longer remembrance than what would probably be secured to them by the Manner wherein they were originally publishedÕ (Collection of Poems, 1748, vol. 1.iiiÐiv). Given the extensive circle of poets Dodsley had cultivated by 1747, he had no trouble filling the first three volumes of the Collection, which appeared on 15 January 1748. Four editions were called for by March 1755 when Dodsley added a fourth volume, and, three years later, he completed the set with volumes 5 and 6. Although the earlier volumes showed many changes by their 1758 edition, the Collection set the canon for mid-eighteenth-century poetry, passing through several editions and supplements by other editors through the rest of the century. Although the earlier volumes show a disproportionate number of contributions by Dodsley's friends Shenstone and Akenside, except in the case of perhaps a half-dozen figures (including Swift and Young), its pages reflect the work of most major and minor practising poets of Dodsley's era."
Madrid, Juan Garcia Infanzon, 1704. Ehret; 3 engraved t.p. vignettes, head-piece, text cut. Pococke, Richard (1704Ð1765), traveller and Church of Ireland bishop of Ossory, of Elphin, and of Meath. ÒPococke's ... most ambitious journey, from 1737 to 1740, was to the Near East, then virtually unknown to western travellers. On 29 September 1737 he reached Alexandria, and went to Rosetta, where he visited Cosmas, the Greek patriarch. In December he left for Upper Egypt and on 9 January 1738 reached Dendereh. He visited Thebes but did not go up the Nile beyond Philae. In the Nile valley he briefly met the Danish artist Frederik Ludvig Norden. Pococke reached Cairo in February 1738. He next visited Jerusalem, and bathed in the Dead Sea to test a statement of Pliny's about the specific gravity of the water. He travelled in northern Palestine, and explored Balbec. He also visited Cyprus, Crete, where he climbed Mount Ida, parts of Asia Minor, and Greece. He made a thorough survey of the coast of the Troad on horseback in 1740 and made a good guess at the location of Troy (Hissarlik). After leaving Cephalonia, Pococke made an extensive tour of Europe. He landed at Messina in November 1740. He visited Naples and twice climbed Vesuvius. He travelled through Germany and on 19 June 1741 with an armed party explored the Mer de Glace in the valley of Chamonix. The Savoy Alps at this time were neither frequently visited nor safe and it was typical of the indomitable Pococke that he reached the Mer de Glace. As the travellers stood on the ice they drank the health of Admiral Edward Vernon to celebrate his recent victory at Porto Bello in the West Indies. This event (described by P. Martel in An Account of the Glaciers or Ice Alps in Savoy, 1744) together with his ascents of Mount Ida and Vesuvius cemented his reputation as a pioneer of mountaineering. Pococke returned to England in 1742 and his Description of the East appeared in two volumes in 1743 and 1745. The second volume was dedicated to Philip Dormer Stanhope, fourth earl of Chesterfield, then lord lieutenant of Ireland, to whom Pococke was domestic chaplain. The work was acclaimed at the time, and Gibbon in the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire described it as of Ôsuperior learning and dignityÕ (ch. 51, n. 69) though he objected that its author too often confounded what he had seen with what he had heard. Pococke did take some licence in his observations, perhaps most famously in his depiction of the sphinx which he shows with a nose that had been missing for some hundreds of years by the time of his observation. None the less the quality and particularly the earliness of his observations and their record in prose, maps, and diagrams make him one of the most important near eastern travellers, ranking with Frederik Ludvig Norden and Carsten Niebuhr, in stimulating an Egyptian revival in European art and architecture, and recording much that has subsequently been lost... Pococke was one of the foremost travellers of his day and, though it has taken some 150 years for all the records of his journeys to be published, his accounts are a valuable and in many cases unique record of the areas he visited.Ó [ODNB] ESTC t31684. His political theory, which derives from Sir Robert Filmer’s Patriarcha and the Anglican Royalist ideology of jure divino monarchy and passive obedience, is expounded in The Rehearsal and in such works as The Case of the Regale and of the Pontificat Stated (1700) , The New Association, Part II (1703) , Cassandra (1704) , The Best Answer (1709) , Best of All (1709) , The Constitution, Laws and Government, of England, Vindicated (1709) and The Finishing Stroke (1711). An extreme proponent of patriarchal monarchy, Leslie nevertheless made clear that the purpose of kingly government was to secure the Church. - Original Stitched binding as issued on thick laid papers. ; 98, [2] pages; Reference ESTCP2833 [Attributes: First Edition]

      - A Amsterdam, Chez George Gallet, 1704. Sphere on title. (8), 191, (1) pp. 12mo. Contemporary calf, spine gilt with raised bands and gilt letering, a bit rubbed and spotted. Goldsmiths 4038; Einaudi 1626n; cf.: Kress 2421; Alden & Landis, 704/53; Echeverria & Wilkie 705/4; cf. Sabin 98172n; not in Howes; not in Leclerc; not in Muller; not in JFBL; not in Mattioli. Originally published in 1703, this is one of at least 7 different editions published in 1704. As a matter of fact there never was an English edition, but the author apparently preferred to pass it off as such to avoid problems with the authorities, since he represented the French court as an ambassador in The Hague. Anti-British work that surveys British trade and commerce in Europe and that with the American colonies and the Indies predicting that the Navigation Acts will result in revolt and independence for the British North American colonies. "Sets out the advantages and disadvantages of the Spanish War of Succession to Great Britain's commercial interests, together with the advantages to Spain of free trade in her colonies. This work is remarkable as containing a distinct prophecy of the revolt of the American colonies from Great Britain" (Encyclopaedia Britannica Online). - Name cut off from top margin of title, first 15 pages with a faint stain in the upper blank margin. NEWTON, Isaac
Opticks: or, a Treatise of the Reflexions, Refractions, Inflexions and Colours of Light. Also two Treatises of the Species and Magnitude of Curvilinear Figures.
London, printed for Sam. Smith, and Benj. Walford, Printers to the Royal Society, 1704 4tof(235 x 185 mm) pp [iv] 144; 211 [recte 213] [1, errata], title in red and black, with 19 folding engraved plates; a fine, crisp copy in contemporary panelled sprinkled calf calf, rebacked, spine with gilt ornaments and red morocco label. £40,000 First edition, first issue, an outstanding copy of 'one of the supreme productions of the human mind' (Andrade). The Opticks is Newton's mature statement of the nature of light, based on his original discovery that white light is a compound of pure elementary colours. In the Principia Newton had shown himself the consummate master of theoretical physics: the Opticks shows him no less the master of experimental method. The work concludes with a set of 'Queries', startling speculations on the nature of matter which had a profound influence on eighteenth-century and later thought. The two mathematical papers in Latin, appended to the work and published here for the first time, expressly assert Newton's priority over Leibniz in his third major contribution to science, the invention of the calculus. Provenance: this copy has extensive annotations in a neat contemporary hand to the first two parts of Book I, comprising marginal notes, underlining, emendations to the text, and highlighting of certain passages. CRAUSE, Rudolf Wilhelm
Dissertatio medica inauguralis de philtris, Quam . Præside Rudolffo Gvilielmus Cravsio . Pro Licentia . Simon Pavlvs Hilscher, Altenb. Misn. . A. D. Octobr. A. C. MDCCIV
Typis Christoph. Krebsii, Jena 1704 - Unbound pamphlet 4to . FIRST EDITION of this alchemical dissertation on love potions or "philters" delivered under the praesis of Rudolf Wilhelm Crause (1642-1718). "Dissertations under R.G. Crausius, dean of the medical faculty at Jena, included alchemical subjects, the universal medicine in 1679, the principles and transmutation of metals in 1686; denial of fermentation in the blood, in 1682; mental disease or bordering thereon, such as incubus in 1683, [etc.] . These dissertation sujbects did not become any less magical in the first decode of the next century, when enchanted persons were discussed in 1701, philters in 1704, and the spirit of the world in 1707" (Thorndike VII, p. 357). A fascinating treatise on philters with descriptions of their use and abuse, how to cure and defend against. The later part has extensive alchemical formulas for their creation. Appended to the work is a letter addressed to the eminent German physician, botanist and chemist, Georg Wolffgang Wedel, who also has an interest in the subject of alchemy 51, [1]] pp. Woodcut headpiece. § Ferchl, Chemish-Pharm. PSALMANAAZAAR, George.
An historical and geographical description of Formosa, an island subject to the Emperor of Japan. Giving an account of the religion, customs, manners, &c. of the inhabitants. Together with a relation of what happened to the author in his travels; particularly his conferences with the Jesuits, and others, in several parts of Europe ...
London, printed for Dan. Brown, a.o., 1704.Contemporary panelled calf (hinges weak but holding). With engraved folding map, engraved folding plate showing the 'Formosan Alphabet' (with tear), and 15 (of 16) engraved plates (margin of folding plate sl. dam.; plate 12 missing) showing costumes, money, buildings, boats etc. XIV,(56),327,(9) pp.*First edition. - One of the most fantastic literary forgeries of all times. Psalmanazar (N.F.B. de Rodes ?), a native from the south of France, led the life of a adventurer. Being instructed by Jesuit tutors in the history and geography of Japan he pretended to be a native of Japan, under influence of chaplain William Innes, to render the story more plausible, this was changed into being a native of Formosa. In London he attracted at once popular interest. Psalmanazar invented his own 'Formosan' language etc., and he wrote his fictitious narration. What was not due to his own imagination he borrowed from the accounts of Varenius and Candidius. Doubt at once arose over the authenticity of his narrative, and after Innes was sent as chaplain-general to the English forces in Portugal, he felt incompetent to sustain his imposture unaided. (D.N.B.). - Slightly foxed, otherwise fine.Alt-Japan-Katalog 1222; Cordier, B. S., col. 281-282; Cordier, B.J., col. 408; Lust 236; Löwendahl 290 (2nd edition); Hill 1398.

WYCHERLEY, W[ILLIAM]
MISCELLANY POEMS: AS SATYRS, EPISTLES, LOVE-VERSES, SONGS, SONNETS, &C
London: Printed for C. Brome, J. Taylor, and B. Tooke, 1704. FIRST EDITION, First State (without correction slip on page 428).. Lower cover with cracks and discoloring along a one-inch vertical strip (the result of rebacking), upper cover with slight darkening for same reason, back cover with a number of scratches and abrasions, one raised band with loss of leather, but the binding absolutely sound, and the elaborately gilt spine still quite pleasing. Frontispiece just a bit foxed and with minor horizontal crease, one prefatory leaf wrinkled in bottom margin (with short tear), leaves with occasional faint foxing in margins, a dozen instances of light marginal printer's smudges, but all of the faults quite minor. A VERY FRESH, BRIGHT, AND CLEAN COPY INTERNALLY, WITH VAST MARGINS.. Very Fresh Large Paper Bradley Martin Copy London: Printed for C. Brome, J. Taylor, and B. Tooke, 1704. 356 x 229 mm. (14 x 9"). Mezzotint frontispiece portrait of Wycherley at age 28 by Smith after Sir Peter Lely. A Large Paper copy. Front pastedown with old engraved armorial bookplate of James Norman and modern bookplate of H. Bradley Martin, rear pastedown with early 20th century bookplate of William Marchbank. Pforzheimer 1101; Foxon, p. 907; Wither to Prior, Wycherley (1640?-1716) is best known for his plays, four fine comedies that established a place for him among the three great practitioners of the Restoration comedy of manners (the others being Etherege and Congreve). The last of his comedies had been produced 30 years before the appearance of the present volume, and Wycherley had in the meanwhile contracted a fever with permanent debilitating consequences. He had also spent seven years in prison for unpaid debts, being released only when James II was seized by magnanimity after seeing an enjoyable performance of the playwright's The Plain Dealer. In any case, the present book, especially when in the Large Paper format seen here, is a noble piece of work suitable for a literary celebrity, and it contains what Pforzheimer says is one of the most famous of literary mezzotints, a portrait that is often lacking. Mostly written a decade before publication, generally ribald, and without special merit, these pieces did not cause a great stir in the literary world, but they did attract the attention of the 16-year-old Alexander Pope, who began a correspondence with Wycherley as a result. (According to DNB, this correspondence was published afterward by Pope in a self-serving version elaborately altered so as to convey a sense of his own superiority as a lad over the older writer.) Our copy comes from the first state of the text, which ends with the words The End of the First Volume, an indication that a further volume was planned; most copies have these words obscured by a paste-over reading The End. The Bradley Martin copy of any book will always be distinguished as having been a part of a library chosen by one of the most discriminating of modern collectors. Once very handsome lavishly gilt 19th century speckled calf, indifferently rebacked, using original backstrip, lower corners renewed, boards with three concentric panels, the central panel formed by pretty rose and foliate roll, obliquely set cornerpieces composed of elegant urn and floral stamps, raised bands, spine compartments quartered diagonally with dotted rules, floral tools at cardinal points, scrolling floral cornerpieces, decorative rolls at head and foot of spine, red morocco labels, all edges gilt.

PSALMANAAZAAR, George.
An historical and geographical description of Formosa, an island subject to the Emperor of Japan. Giving an account of the religion, customs, manners, &c. of the inhabitants. Together with a relation of what happened to the author in his travels; particularly his conferences with the Jesuits, and others, in several parts of Europe .
      - London, printed for Dan. [Attributes: First Edition]

Monteith, Robert
Theatre of Mortality or, the illustrious inscriptions extant upon the several monuments, erected over the dead bodies, (of the sometime Honourable Persons) buried within the Gray-Friars church-yard; and other churches and burial-places within the city of Edinburgh and suburbs: collected and Englishe by R. Monteith, M.A
Printed by the Heirs and Successors of Andrew Anderson, Edinburgh 1704 - Looks to be Re-bound in full leather, not recently (probably mid/late Victorian). The binding is in poor condition. The binding is heavily surface worn and rubbed, and the extremities and spine, rather chipped and worn with loss, thus the boards are cracking and shaky. There is some decorative cutting of leather to the board corners which is chipped. Internally, the endpapers (not original) are very grubby, foxed and stained. There is a previous owners name and address to the reverse of the front blank. There is a leaf from another work (unknown, looks to be Victorian) also an Edinburgh Epitaph tipped in to the rear endpapers. The first original leaf present, is the title page, which has been stuck at the inner edge. There is a chip to the top of the title page, with loss, and the slight remains of a hand written name to top margin. The contents are cracking after the first couple of leaves, which are a little torn at the bottom inner edge. The leaves throughout are darkened, browned, foxed and grubby throughout (in varying degrees). There is a small paleish mark to one leaf. There are a couple of small corner chips, page edge nicks, and some minor creasing.Title page, Order-to-print on verso of title page beginning - 'Edinburgh. September. 6. 1704', Dedication (3 pages), To the Reader and Advertisement (3 pages), pages 1-78, Index (2 pages). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
