| The Storm: or, a Collection of the most remarkable Casualties and Disasters which happen'd in the late dreadful Tempest, both by Sea and Land.
|
Printed for G. Sawbridge in Little Britain, and sold by J. Nutt near Stationers-Hall. 1704 - [16], 272pp., folding table; 8vo. Paper rather browned throughout, some pages quite heavily, others with sl. 'tide-mark' from waterstain. Fresh contemp. e.ps. Most handsome contemp. sprinkled calf, dec. blind panels to both boards in lighter shade of calf with cat's paw mottling. Expertly rebacked to match, raised & blind ruled bands, red gilt morocco label. ESTC T70849; Furbank & Owens 59(P). An early example of a book hastily cobbled together to cash in on a recent event, and the use of newspapers to promote it. The storm occurred on the night of the 26th November 1703, and was estimated to have killed 8,000. Earlier that month Defoe had been released from prison and, desperate for cash to pay creditors, he had the idea of writing a work to commemorate the storm and placed an advertisement in the London Gazette for December 6th, 1703 appealing for eye witness accounts, which eventually filled over two thirds of his book.

- Leyden, Pieter vander Aa, 1704.4to. Modern marbled boards. With engraved frontispiece and 5 folding engraved plates. 86 (=89),(11) pp.*The first part is a translation of Girolamo Benzoni's (1518/19-1570) La Historia del mondo nuovo, Venice, 1565. Benzoni went in 1541 as a soldier in the Spanish army at an age of 22 from Milan to the New World. He spent the next 15 years stationed at various posts throughout America. 'It is valuable as an early record of the establishment of Europeans in America written from a non-Spanish standpoint. The woodcuts are of particular interest: engraved from the author's own drawings, they illustrate the daily life of the Indians and some of the natural resources of the country' (Howgego p.107). He describes vividly the Spanish cruelties committed against the Indians. The second part contains the voyages of Amerigo Vespucci (1451-1512). The account of Hennepin called for on the title-page is not present, it was also issued separately. - ( Age-browned; upper outer corner occasionally waterstained).Tiele 88; Cat. NHSM I, p.263; Muller, America, p.12; European-Americana V, 704/16; Sabin 4806. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

- 0 Chez George Gallet, 1704. Sphere on title. (8), 191, (1) pp. 12mo. Contemporary calf, spine gilt with raised bands and gilt letering, a bit rubbed and spotted. Goldsmiths 4038; Einaudi 1626n; cf.: Kress 2421; Alden & Landis, 704/53; Echeverria & Wilkie 705/4; cf. Sabin 98172n; not in Howes; not in Leclerc; not in Muller; not in JFBL; not in Mattioli. Originally published in 1703, this is one of at least 7 different editions published in 1704. Name cut off from top margin of title. As a matter of fact there never was an English edition, but the author apparently preferred to pass it off as such to avoid problems with the authorities, since he represented the French court as an ambassador in The Hague. AntiBritish work that surveys British trade and commerce in Europe and that with the American colonies and the Indies predicting that the Navigation Acts will result in revolt and independence for the British North American colonies. The last of his comedies had been produced 30 years before the appearance of the present volume and Wycherley had in the meanwhile contracted a fever with permanent debilitating consequences. He had also spent seven years in prison for unpaid debts being released only when James II was seized by magnanimity after seeing an enjoyable performance of the playwright's The Plain Dealer. In any case the present book especially when in the Large Paper format seen here is a noble piece of work suitable for a literary celebrity and it contains what Pforzheimer says is one of the most famous of literary mezzotints a portrait that is often lacking. Mostly written a decade before publication generally ribald and without special merit these pieces did not cause a great stir in the literary world but they did attract the attention of the 16-year-old Alexander Pope who began a correspondence with Wycherley as a result. (According to DNB this correspondence was published afterward by Pope in a self-serving version elaborately altered so as to convey a sense of his own superiority as a lad over the older writer.) Our copy comes from the first state of the text which ends with the words The End of the First Volume an indication that a further volume was planned; most copies have these words obscured by a paste-over reading The End. The Bradley Martin copy of any book will always be distinguished as having been a part of a library chosen by one of the most discriminating of modern collectors. | OPTICKS: OR, A TREATISE OF THE REFLEXIONS, REFRACTIONS, INFLEXIONS AND COLOURS OF LIGHT. ALSO TWO TREATISES OF THE SPECIES AND MAGNITUDE OF CURVILINEAR FIGURES.
|
London: Printed for Sa,. Smith and Benj. Walford 1704 - 4to, rebound in period style 3/4 calf with raised bands and red morocco label. Lacks half title as usual, title printed in red and black with several small stamps of the Inner Temple Library at lower margin and on several other leaves. Scattered foxing. Next to the PRINCIPIA, this FIRST EDITION of OTICKS stands as Newton's greatest work. Much of the OPTICKS was written thirty years earlier and finally put into print in 1704, just a few months after Newton assumed the chair as President of the Royal Society. It summarized his discoveries and theories concerning light and color, the spectrum of sunlight, the degrees of refraction associated with different colors, the color circle (where red and violet at the extreme ends of the straight spectrum are linked and twisted into a circle), the invention of the relecting telescope, the first workable theory of the rainbow, and experiments on what later would be called interference effects in conjunction with Newton's rings. It expounds his corpuscular or emission theory of light. At the end of the book as appendices are two mathematical treatises in Latin, DE QUADRATURA and ENUMERATIO LINEARUM TERTII ORDINIS, which Newton specifically added to establish his priority over Leibniz in the invention of the calculus. A Berlin Jean Wessel 1704 - fort volume in-12 broché, couverture grise muette, entièrement non rogné.
