Craig is perhaps best known for his 'Jus Feudal', the first systematic text on law published in Scotland. Mémoire manuscrit et anonyme sur la modernisation des Ponts et chaussées sous le règne de Louis XV. Ecrit à la première personne très certainement par l'un des proches collaborateurs de l'intendant Trudaine, il offre un tableau exhaustif de l'administration et des finances de ce corps à une période où il fut entièrement réorganisé. 1e partie : sur les différentes parties des chemins (des ponts, chaussées ou grands chemins, largeur et dimensions des chemins, fossés qui bordent les grands chemins, Plans d'arbres qui sont sur la lisière des grands chemins, Du pavé et des espaces en terre qui sont aux deux côtés du pavé, De divers travaux concernant le cours et la navigation de plusioeurs rivières). 2e partie : des fonds destinés aux dépenses des ponts et chaussées. 3e partie des règlements généraux concernant les ponts et chaussées et des maximes qu'on observe dans ce genre d'administration. 4e partie : Des officiers chargés de l'administration des Ponts & Chaussées. 5e partie Des trésoriers et controlleurs des Ponts et chaussées. 6e partie : des comptes des ponts et chaussées, De ce qui précède la reddition des comptes, De la présentation des comptes, De la recette, De la dépense du compte des Ponts & chaussées : entretien d'ouvrages, du paiement des nouveaux ouvrages, Continuation d'ouvrages, des parfaits paiements des ouvrages, d'exception des formalités, Des indemnités accordées par le roi, des matériaux provenant de démolition d'édifices publics et de maisons particulières et des collections de matériaux appartenant au roi ; Appointements frais de voiage , Gages et taxations fixes, gages et augmentations des gages des trésoriers particuliers. Après avoir occupé les charges de maître des requêtes puis conseiller d?Etat Charles-Daniel Trudaine (1703-1769) fut choisi en 1743 par le contrôleur général Orry pour diriger en qualité d?intendant des finances, le service des Ponts et chaussées, une des fonctions les plus élevées de l?administration centrale après celle de Contrôleur général des Finances, en charge de la vérification, du contrôle des Finances royales et du budget de l?Etat. En plus de cette responsabilité, l?intendant des Finances était aussi chargé avec le contrôleur général des Finances du « détail » des Ponts et chaussées, c?est-à-dire de l?administration et de l?organisation de ce corps. Instigateur du « Bureau des dessinateurs », bureau qui deviendra en 1747 « l?Ecole » du corps royal des ponts et chaussées, c?est lui qui choisit de placer Jean-Rodolphe Perronet à sa tête, qui aura d'ailleurs le titre de "premier ingénieur" des ponts et chaussées à partir de 1763. « C'est à l'administration de Trudaine que nous devons les actes, remarquables pour l'époque, rendus en matière de mines, et notamment l'arrêt du Conseil du 14 janvier 1744, qui reprit l'imprudente concession, faite, en 1698, par Louis XIV, aux propriétaires du sol, du droit d'exploiter les mines de houille dans leurs fonds; cet arrêt donna sur la conduite des travaux de ces mines les premières clauses générales de police minérale. En tant qu'administrateur des ponts et chaussées, Daniel Trudaine, économiste éclairé, fait réaliser plusieurs milliers de kilomètres de routes royales (actuelles routes nationales) reliant Paris aux frontières et aux principaux ports de mer. » (Louis Aguillon, Notice Historique de l'Ecole des Mines de Paris). Title-pages printed in red and black. 70 engraved plates, maps and plans, 2 folding and 30 double-page, book V with woodcut coats-of-arms (map of the Tower Liberty repaired on verso, a few plates misbound, last leaf of volume one with paper fault and old repair on blank verso, G1 of book VI with small marginal repair, Y3 of appendix with tear into text. ) Contemporary panelled calf, spine with gilt-ruled raised bands, morocco title and volume labels (rebacked in the 19th-century, bands rubbed, joints slightly splitting, sides scuffed, one volume label lacking). Provenance: Foljambe Collection removed from Osberton Hall. Fifth and grandest edition. John Strype was already collecting materials for the text by 1703, and an ambitious reprint "with very great Additions throughout, and illustrated with about 100 large Copper Cutts. requiring much Time and Great expence" was advertised as early as 1708. The advertisement was on the title verso of Hatton's "New View of London", a smaller and cheaper book whose popularity actually caused the postponement of Strype's more monumental work. His two folio volumes cost six guineas and the print run was probably at least 500 copies. He included what he believed to be Stow's entire original text, which had become conflated with the 1618 and 1633 editions of Anthony Munday, clearly identifying his own additions in the margins. John Kip, who had been responsible for the views of London buildings in volume one of Mortier's "Nouveau théâtre de la Grande Bertagne" (1707), is credited with about half the 28 engraved views of "eminent places". In addition there are two folding general maps of London, one showing the city as it was in Queen Elizabeth's time, 17 ward maps (books II-III) and 20 parish maps (books IV and VI). Tagli colorati a spruzzo. Fregi all'arabesco ai frontespizi, testatine e capilettera ornati su rame. Dedicatoria a Dodun, Marchese di Herbaut. Esemplare assai bello con qualche brunitura lieve. Terza edizione (la prima è del 1703) di importante trattazione di terapeutica medica, la prima a discorrere della radice sudamericana dell'Ipecacuanha come rimedio alla dissenteria (giovandosi di tale cura l'Helvetius riuscì a guarire il Delfino). "The dysentery then prevailed in that city [Parigi]; and all who applied to him are said to have been infallibly cured. His sucess was celebrated; and Louis XIV ordered him to publish the remedy which produced such certain and suprising effects. He declared it to be Ipecacuanha, and received 1000 louis-d'ors for the discovery " (Chalmers). Helvetius, che fu nonno del celebre filosofo materialista autore di "De l'Esprit" Claude-Adrien, nacque nel 1661 in Olanda da famiglia oriunda del Palatinato. Addottoratosi a Leida, godette della benemerenza della corte francese - di Luigi XIV e del suo confessore, il famoso père Lachaise - per la suddetta guarigione. Morì a Parigi nel 1727, lasciando numerosi altri lavori medici sulle patologie gastro-intestinali, sui tumori, sulle febbri, sulle emorragie, sulle pestilenze. Edizione assai poco corrente, mancante a Blake, Waller e Wellcome.

Seutter M6535, Augsburg - This map is based on the important De L'isle map of 1703, titled "Carte des environs du Mississippi". This map illustrated the routes for the gold plunders of the Incans by the Spanish. Also of note is the fact that the source of both the Rio Grande and the Mississippi are well detailed, considering the period. Later on, Seutter added four inset maps in the right depicting the bays of Cartagena (Colombia), Havana, Porto Bello (Panama), and Vera Cruz. The Porto Bello inset depicts the fleet of Admiral Vernon entering the bay during the invasion of 1739.The cartouche in top left details the scale of the map. Moderner Halblederband im Stil der Zeit mit reicher Rückenvergoldung.. Erste von Stahl besorgte Ausgabe von Bechers Hauptwerk. Es ist deshalb so berühmt, weil Stahl hier erstmals seine Phlogistontheorie entwickelt. Das Werk ist gegenüber der Ausgabe von 1682 um drei Supplemente und Stahls "Specimen Becherianum" erweitert. Der Titel ist eine Reminiszenz an A. Kirchers "Mundus subterraneus". - Becher (1635-1682), einer der einflussreichsten Chemiker seiner Zeit (besonders auf G. E. Stahl), gilt als Vorläufer und Wegbereiter der Phlogistontheorie. Er unternimmt Versuche, die Verbrennung als allgemeine chemische Reaktion zu erklären, und erkennt die Zunahme der Masse bei der Verkalkung (Oxidation) von Blei. Wie viele seiner Zeitgenossen ist auch er von der Transmutation der Metalle überzeugt. - Exlibris. Titel gering gebräunt, sonst sauber und wohlerhalten. Plein veau brun, dos a nerfs orne (coiffes elimees, epidermures). Edition Originale. Curieux ouvrage dans lequel, renvoyant dos a dos Ptolemee et Copernic, l'auteur expose sa theorie particuliere du mouvement des planetes. "Ayant compris que la Terre etoit percee par une infinite de concavitez, comme tous les corps par des pores, des fibres et des veines, et que les eaux y font une circulation continuelle: j'ay cru aussi qu'elle pouvoit estre inclinee par leur mouvement, et que ces eaux retournant par des voyes disposees de certaine maniere, pouvoient la faire retourner de l'autre coste par un mouvement periodique comme celuy de certaines Orloges". L'ouvrage est illustre de 3 planches hors-texte, dont l'une sur papier fort contient une petite piece mobile retenue en son centre par une ficelle, et de 12 petites figures gravees sur cuivre et inserees dans le texte. Cet ouvrage tres rare n'est repertorie dans les collections publiques francaises que par la Bibliotheque Nationale de France et la Bibliotheque Mejanes d'Aix-en-Provence qui conserve un exemplaire relie en maroquin rouge aux armes de Louis XIV. Fine chart of the World, showing the magnetic variations of the compass. Elegantly designed map of the oceans sailed by French navigators in the 18th century. Drawn by J. N. Bellin (1703-1772), who during his over fifty years of work in the French Hydrographic Service was appointed the first 'Ingenieur hydrographe de la Marine.' This chart extends from California to Japan and focuses on the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The French sphere of influence in the West Indies, Africa, and India would have generated this interest in compass and wind variations applied to a Mercator projection covering most of the world. By 1765 France lost most of its overseas empire following the Seven Years War (French and Indian War in America), so knowledge of the sea routes was important to holding what was left. Besides a wealth of hydrographic information including little wind heads throughout, this beautiful map features an exquisite title cartouche featuring the French crown surmounting the globe. Fine. Most exceptionnal copy. Splendid entirely gold tooled copy of the first collected edition of John Forbes' works, with the arms of Pope Pious VI (1717-1799), and with bookplate of Thomas II (1760-1843), Lord and Duke of Vargas. John Forbes, born in Aberdeen, studied at King's College there, at Heidelberg, and other continental universities. He returned to Aberdeen in 1620 to take up a post as Professor of Divinity. Due to his inclinations to episcopalism he lost his professorship in 1640, fled to Holland in 1642 , and returned back to Scotland in 1644. He refused to sign the covenant proposed by Charles I for remodelling the church in Scotland and firmly iterated his presbyterian principles. His spiritual diary, which in the above work is translated from English into Latin, is one of the more illuminating spiritual autobiographies of the 17th century. This collected edition includes Forbes capital works CInstructiones historico-theologicae, de doctrina ChristianaE (= vol. 2), and CIrenicum amatoribus veritatis et pacis in ecclesia ScoticanaE (p. 361-500 of vol. 1), a sort of apology of the episcopal systems. Although, at first sight, 8 pages seem to be missing in the first volume, it appears, after comparison with another copy, that this copy is complete anyway; the jump from 524 to 533 is simply a numeration error. Tradotte dal francese da' Leonardo Boncrisi… In Venetia, presso Girolamo Albrizzi, 1703, in-folio, pp. (4), 8, 96, legatura coeva in pergamena floscia. Al titolo impresa con monogramma "GA" sorretto da due putti entro cornice fogliacea. Interessante traduzione italiana, a cura del Boncrisi, di declamazioni e sentenze raccolte dal De Maistre (1608-1658), celebre giansenista francese, durante i suoi anni di attività come avvocato. La sua figura passò agli onori della cronaca poiché all'apice della sua carriera di successo si ritirò in seguito a una vocazione. Curiosa raccolta di interesse giuridico. Sull'ultimo f. indice ms. da mano coeva.

Charmante suite, d'une grande rarete, composee de 7 planches (dont le titre), de decors divers par Pierre Bourdon (1656-apres 1708), orfevre et habile graveur d'ornements a Paris au debut du XVIIIs. Dans les annees suivantes Bourdon publia encore 2 autres recueils, le troisieme et dernier vers 1707. Quelques taches sur le titre.

Cologne, Jean Sambix, le Jeune, 1703, pt. in-8vo, 412 p. / 534 p., quelques marges faiblement rongées, sans atteinte au texte (premières 10 pages du vol. 2), reliures d’époque en plein veau marron, dos à nerfs richement ornés, pièces de titre rouges, coiffes sup. manquantes, coins dénudés. Fils aîné de Christophe de Bassompierre et de Louise de Radeval, gentilhomme lorrain, François de Bassompierre voyage en Italie et dans le royaume de Naples; il se fixe ensuite à la cour d’Henri IV puis à celle de Louis XIII. Se distinguant dans la plupart des guerres que mèneront Henri IV puis Louis XIII, il fut nommé en 1614 colonel général des Suisses et en 1622 maréchal de France. Louis XIII l'emploiera dans diverses ambassades. Il épousera secrètement Louise Marguerite de Lorraine, fille d'Henri Ier de Guise, ce qui sera la véritable cause de sa disgrâce. Selon St-Simon, à cause de cette alliance, et malgré les services rendus, Louis XIII, cédant aux instances et conseils du cardinal de Richelieu, le fait arrêter pour complot et emprisonner à la Bastille (1631). Il y reste 12 ans et il n'en sortira qu'à la mort du roi en 1643. Pourtant, Bassompierre n'avait jamais comploté. Bravant l'adversité, il sut aménager sa captivité qui, sans être douce, ne fut point trop cruelle. Il mourut d'apoplexie, à Provins chez le duc de Vitry, en Brie, en 1646.

Ich bezweifele allerdings, daß die vorliegende Karte mit der ursprünglichen großen Karte von 1693 identisch ist - diese soll einen militärichen Charakter mit Schlachtaufstellungen etc. gehabt haben (vgl. NDB 18, S. 477 - eine Abbildung dieser Karte von 1693 konnte ich leider ich nicht heranziehen und auch kein Exemplar nachweisen), während die vorliegende Karte, abgesehen vom Titel sowie der Kennzeichnung von Festungen und Schanzen, keinerlei militärischen Charakter aufweist, sondern eher, auch durch die Aufteilung in 48 Einzelblätter, einen kleinen Reiseatlas darstellt. Es scheint sich um eine Titelauflage der als "Schauplatz des Kriegs. Oder: Geographische Vorstellung der jenigen Länder und Provinzien (.)" im Jahr 1693 ebenfalls bei Kühnen in Ulm erschienenen 1. Buchausgabe zu handeln (nur der Text des Drucktitels und das Datum wurden verändert). Die Karte bzw. der Atlas umfasst Nord-, West- und Süddeutschland, die Niederlande, Belgien, Westfrankreich, einen Teil Südfrankreichs, Österreich, Schweiz und Oberitalien. Von großer Seltenheit - ich kann nur jeweils 1 Exemplar dieser Ausgabe in der UB Erfurt/Gotha und in der Herzog-August-Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel sowie 1 Exemplar der Buchausgabe von 1693 in der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek München nachweisen. The Dedication is signed J. G. (i.e. James Gatherer). With the early ownership inscription of "Ph: Fowke, M.D.! A.D. 1703" with a six-line inscription in Latin and Greek beneath it, and a number of additional notes in his hand throughout, in the margins and on the rear blank flyleaves. Phineas Fowke (1638-1710) was a Yorkshire physician who graduated from Cambridge in 1668. He practiced in London and was admitted as a fellow in the College of Physicians in 1680. See DNB.

The map is preparedin a Portolan Sea Chart style, with only place names along the coastline, California as and island and only one of New Zealand's coastlines shown (as a single island). An outline of Compagnie Landt is shown, trailing off without a definite ending on both the east and west, with a similar depictions of the Straits of Anian above California. The coastal features of the map are quite well defined, with many early placenames, including fictional ones on the West Coast of North America and between California and the mainland. The map and it companion map of the Eastern Hemisphere can be joined to form a world map, but also appear on the market as separate sheets. Original gray rubbed silk covers, a Japanese reprint of the 1663 Chinese map, neatly rebacked,127 x 137.5 cm., a few old worm holes, mended, minor flaws, hand colored folds down to 21.5 x 34 cm. R A R E FIRST & ONLY EDITION Translation of the Chinese Title: cont. WITH THE WHOLE PICTURE OF THE PEOPLE'S HISTORY AND ALL ROADS. * A marvelous and grand size example. The work basically shows the whole country and its surrounding areas. Minor tears, most repaired, some old stains & repaired worming, actually quite nice. Remarkable in its detail and features. It shows the Great Wall at the top, or Northern orientation, geogra- phic features include: rivers, lakes, cities and villages, mountains are painted in green. With a list of foreign countries at the left margin, showing the distance in "Ri" or miles. Important administrative areas in red outline, islands named, the sea around the whole country is done in a stylistic wave pattern set in the middle of an ocean border. At the East are islands of the "Women, Long People, Hairy People" &c. Essentially a grand world map, with China occupying the center, other countries shown on the exterior of the map. With a list & explanation on Chinese cities at the bottom, with commentaries on each of the provinces to the right. European countries are shown to the West, each properly named. The whole map is hand-colored with gouache or pastel water colors. There are four marginal stamped cinnabar collector's seals. * CONDITION: The map was rebacked professionally a long time ago, there is some loss in a couple of the folds, please see the scans to observe this, else some minor old worming but mended, by and large a nice work in good plus condition. Finding maps of this enormous size and subject are difficult, it goes without saying, that we can not always fine pristine examples that have resided in Japan where insects love to eat this kind of hand-made Washi paper. Seldom found for sale anywhere these days. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: This exact map has been cited and illustrated in: T. Oda: THE WORLD IN JAPANESE MAPS UNTIL THE MID 19TH CENTURY, plate #23, on pages 50-51. Nel 1758 lavorò ad un'opera storica-critica sulle unità di misura italiane ed estere, pubblicata nel 1760, che gli valse il titolo di Capitano Ingegnere di terraferma avita presso la Serenissima. Da allora in poi fu impegnato in una vasta attività pratica di geodeta, architetto civile e militare, ingegnere addetto alla regolazione di corsi fluviali. R A R E This excellent work shows the area of North ca. 10 degrees, and South of the equator of 10 degrees, West ca. 90 degrees & East to ca. 120 degrees. Essentially showing all of Borneo to parts of Paragoa Island, down to the Combava island, all of Sumatra, Iava [Java], part of the Celebes, Malacca, Ihor [Jahore] & Capora [Singapore] and the small islands Lingren and those around the Straits of Sin & the Straits of Malacca. * Nicely done, with mountains, rivers, cities named, inset of title cartouche. A very nice example of early 18th century cartography and engraving by the celebrated cartographer and engraver. * Moll [died 1732] was of Dutch origin and an accomplished engraver, geographer and bookseller went to London in 1678. Matthieu 1820' et OMathieu 1714', reliure en cuir mouchete, dos orne a 5 nerfs, piece de titre en maroquin rouge, tranches jaspees, un coin emousse, sur toute la doublure et une partie de la premiere page de garde des remarques ms., en parfait etat. Premiere edition. Nomme en 1644 professeur de droit a l'Universite de Toulouse, Antoine Dadin de Hauteserre s'est distingue par de nombreux ecrits et sur le droit francais et sur le droit canon. A relever parmi eux, il reste notamment le present traite qui se veut une refutation de theses de Charles Fevret (1583-1661) avancees dans son oeuvre maitresse OTraite de l'abus et du vrai sujet des appellations...' (Dijon, 1653). Il s'agit la de la defense des libertes de l'Eglise Gallicane, libertes qui - au profit de la juridiction royale - pouvaient etre revendiquees a l'aide du fameux Oappel comme d'abus'. Comme nous renseigne la preface, l'Assemblee du clerge de France demanda a Hauteserre de repondre a cette apologie du gallicanisme, tache dont s'acquitta l'auteur deja en 1670. Mais la publication fut reportee du fait que M. de Hauteserre ne s'inclina point devant les prerogatives royales (et etatiques) des choses ecclesiastiques qui l'emportaient sur celles de l'Eglise (situation en France qui ne finissait qu'en 1905 lors de la separation entre l'Eglise et l'Etat). Le OJournal des savants' du 26 mars 1703 apprecie en ces termes l'oeuvre de Hauteserre: "Ouvrage estimable par la profonde erudition de son auteur, il n'est pas egalement estimable par ses sentiments et ses maximes, de maniere qu'il est plus sur de s'attacher aux faits qu'il rapporte qu'aux regles qu'il a voulu etablir" (cite d'apres R. The work includes accounts of sources of gold, its ores, impurities, its extraction, purification, famous experiments with gold, use of mercury for extraction, etc. Alchemical topics such as the Philosopher's Stone and making gold are also mentioned. The later part of the work deals with the pharmaceutical uses of gold with formulas and the ailments they can treat. The author cites, Agicola, Libavius, Geber, Becker, Marhof, Porta, Fr. Hoffmann, Kellner, Boyle, Kentmann, Glauber, Conringer, Wedel, Sennert, etc. As one would expect there is a reference to gold in the Americas (Peru and Chile). Unannehmlichkeiten zuzog... Mehrere seiner Schriften wurden zu Berlin u. Hamburg als gotteslästerlich vom Henker verbrannt." 1733 wurde er vom Lehramt suspendiert u. erhielt eine erhebliche Geldbuße u. Schreibverbot (Schröder, 884, 35). - Carsten Thode, Zögling des Hamburgischen Waisenhauses u. später Privatschullehrer, "nahm regen Antheil an den kirchenpolitischen Streitigkeiten... Auf Veranlassung [der Kayserlichen] Commission wurde [er] 1710 unter Läutung der Schandglocke der Stadt u. ihres Gebietes für ewig verwiesen. "He attempted to secure his standing with Newton by publishing a work on mathematics, Fluxionem methodus inversa (1703), a general account of Newton's method of the calculus. But Newton himself had not yet published his methods, and was not pleased to have been thus anticipated. The Huguenot mathematician Abraham de Moivre wrote a refutation of Cheyne's book in 1704, accusing him of misunderstanding Newton's methods. Cheyne replied in 1705, but his reputation had suffered and his relationship with Newton and the Royal Society ended." [ODNB]#11;"A work on the calculus of dubious mathematical validity, the 'Fluxionum' brought Cheyne more anguish than positive reputation. Quelques legeres epidermures sur les plats et/ou frottements discrets. Extremites des coiffes usees. Interieur tres frais.~~RARE EDITION DE TOULOUSE. La premiere edition de ce petit roman historique dans la veine des ouvrages du polygraphe Eustache Le Noble (1643-1711), a ete donnee a Paris par Guillaume de Luyne, en 1694. Une deuxieme edition, datee de 1696, avec le nom de l'auteur sur le titre pour la premiere fois montre bien le succes que pouvait avoir a l'epoque ce genre de petits romans pseudo-historiques. Cette impression provinciale toulousaine montre par ailleurs combien ces ecrits etaient populaire et largement diffuses dans le pays.~~Cette histoire n'est pas tout a fait une fable, l'histoire s'en trouve rapportee par Torfeus en son histoire de la Norvege au Xe siecle sous le nom d'Algerte.~~Comme presque toujours dans les ouvrages de Le Noble il faut y chercher une plus vaste portee que celle d'un petit roman. Dans la preface il insiste sur la magnanimite, l’education du fils destine a devenir roi ; il fait reference a Plutarque et conclut : « Ce n’est donc point sur la bagatelle d’une petite intrigue amoureuse que roule cette histoire, mais les politiques auront le plaisir de la voir rouler sur une intrigue de cour ou l’on voit un favori raffine tromper son maitre pour lui enlever sa couronne et sa femme, et perir ensuite en voulant executer ce detestable attentat ».~~BEL EXEMPLAIRE.~~Photographies disponibles sur simple demande. The British Library has an account of the trial printed on a single folio sheet entitled The Full Tryals, Examination and Conviction, of Hagon Swanson and Sarah Benton, which might date from 1702. There are 26 copies of this expanded version recorded on ESTC, but with some notable absentees (including Yale).

Else very good. An early New York legal imprint publishing two laws pertaining to the building and operation of Trinity Church. "An Act for the better Establishment..." provides, among other things, a larger fund from the Crown to compensate the rector of Trinity Church, William Vesey, so that the voluntary fund may be directed back toward its original goal of raising money for the erection of a steeple. The second act (pp.3-6), "granting sundry privileges and powers to the Rector and Inhabitants of the City of New-York," establishes the legal status and powers, land rights, and administration of Trinity Church as an official organ of the Church of England. Among the earliest official documents relating to one of New York's oldest congregations, printed by William Bradford, the "pioneering printer of the English middle colonies" and first printer of New York. Hinter einer stark befestigten Stadt ("Urbs Potosina Peruvii maxima & ditissima") ein riesiger, aufgeschnittener Berg, der von einer Kirche bekrönt wird (darüber das Schriftband "Omne datum optimum &omne Donum perfectum desursum est. Jac.Ap.cr."), unter der Kirche "Mons Potosimaior" und "Plures latent intra montis viscera, quam cives intra urbis Potosinae maenia Hispani & Americani". Mehrere Bergwerksszenen zeigen das überprüfen, scheiden, und den Abtransport von Silber, in einer Höhle Scheideöfen, am Hang Arbeiter beim Stollenbau usw., darüber die Inschrift "Argentum". Im Hintergrund eine Flotte von Segelschiffen, die das wertvolle Metall abtransportieren ("Classis Argentifera abit ex America"). Links vom Berg 3 feuerspeiende Berge, rechts vom Berg eine Natursteinbrücke ("Pons Lumichaca Naturae artificium grande benificium"). Vor der Stadt 2 große Windmühlen, eine Trennmühle mit großen Zahnrädern ("Hic molitur coquitz & apparatur optimum") die andere zur Zuckerherstellung ("Et in conos efformatur Saccharum"). Davor ein Gestell mit großen Zuckerhüten und ein vollbeladener Ochsenkarren mit der Aufschrift "Dulce Pondus", ebenfalls mit Zuckerhüten beladen. Ganz im Vordergrund ein vollbeladenes Lama ("Oves Americanae Cameli formes"), in der Mitte halten 2 federngeschmückte Indianer eine rocaillengeschmückte Schrifttafel mit der Inschrift "Sic vos non vobis Inquiritis, extrahitis, eruitis, effoditis, evehitis e montibus & carvernis Aurum & Argentum Smaragdos & Saphiros & idcirco inter labores aegerrimi inter delicias miserrimi inter divitias pauperrimi estis Americani; attamen felicißimi quia Christiani".Rechts davon spricht ein Europäer mit einem Indianer "Hispanis Fidem debent Americani humanam & Christianam". First edition, large paper copy, of the greatest work on the ancient Northern languages of the eighteenth century - perhaps, indeed, the most comprehensive account ever published. The present copy is in excellent condition, a crisp and clean large paper copy. Hickes' work embraces not only the grammar and vocabulary of Anglo-Saxon but all Teutonic dialects from Moeso-Gothic to Icelandic. The valuable accounts of Scandinavian manuscripts were supplied by the Swedish scholar Peringski'ld and by Thwaites' correspondents Olaus Rudbeck and Jonas Salanus. In addition the Thesaurus contains a dissertation on Anglo-Saxon law and government, a treatise on Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Danish coinage (by Andrew Fountaine) and a catalogue of manuscripts containing Anglo-Saxon (by Humphrey Wanley). The scale and breadth of Hickes' achievement has been well appreciated by contemporaries as much as modern scholars, who have always heaped it with praise. A book 'to which the learned world never yet saw anything like or comparable in this kind of literature' (Wotton in his epitome of 1708), which 'never had nor will have its equal' (Ritson in 1782) and which 'scholars will continue to use or neglect at their peril' (N.R. Ker in 1951), the Thesaurus has never lacked for admirers. 'The Thesaurus begins with grammars of the Northern languages, seeking by superbly detailed comparative philology to place Anglo-Saxon among its kindred tongues. In the supplementary treatise directed to Bartholomew Shower under the title Dissertatio Epistolaris , Hickes examines critically for the first time the foundations of the study Anglo-Saxon antiquities. 'The learning of the Dissertatio thus found expression not only in connection with its main theme, but also in numerous digressions which, even to-day, carry the full weight of the magisterial scholarship that informed them. The contributions thus made to knowledge are not to be assessed in a paragraph. Even in its main arguments the scope of the treatise was comprehensive' (Douglas p. 91). The treatment of Anglo-Saxon charters as a fundamental source for the history of the time was revolutionary: many forgeries or copies were for the first time denounced, and proper chronologies based on palaeographical fact could be established. 'It was Hickes who began the proper investigation of Anglo-Saxon charters' (Douglas p. 92). Two further portions by outside scholars were added by Hickes: a discourse on Anglo-Saxon coins by Andrew Fountaine, and a catalogue of surviving Anglo-Saxon manuscripts by Harley's librarian Humphrey Wanley. Wanley's work is of immense value today for containing the only detailed descriptions of some of the Cottonian MSS which perished in the fire of 1731. Douglas rates it thus: 'from the quality of its scholarship and the extent of its range it retains its value as an indispensable work of reference, and is to-day almost as useful as when it was written.' The book was originally intended to be bound in two volumes, but it was found that the large paper copies were too heavy and cumbersome and most of them, as well as most of those in small paper, were bound in three parts. This is an impressive exception and a survival remarkable in this condition. Only a small number of the large paper copies, sold at five guineas, were printed, intended, as in this case, 'for the libraries of princes and the private libraries of great men'. Reliure de l'epoque, petit accroc a la coiffe sup., coins frottes. (19) ff., 420 pp., (1) f., (1) f. blanc. Quelques mouillures claires dans les marges. Edition originale de la refutation de l'Histoire des Flagellants de l'abbe Jacques Boileau parue d'abord en latin en 1700 puis en francais en 1701. Jacques Boileau s'appuyait sur les passages de la Bible et sur l'Histoire de l'Eglise pour prouver le non fonde de la flagellation volontaire, consideree alors comme un moyen de mortifier la chair. En particulier, il s'insurgeait contre la « flagellation d'en bas » (sur les reins et sur les fesses) qui « excite les mouvemens impudiques a cause de la proximite des parties genitales (a) et excite au plaisir brutal de la chair » et citait a l'appui plusieurs exemples de cette deviance sexuelle. La critique de l'abbe Thiers est cinglante : il ridiculise le style latin de Boileau, puis justifie avec force arguments l'usage de la flagellation volontaire dans les differents ordres religieux. EDITION ORIGINALE. Tout petit manque en bord exterieur lateral du titre, quelques tres discretes aureoles ou petites taches sans aucune gravite, discretes et petites restaurations aux deux coiffes et aux coins, bel exemplaire. On y trouve la description des ports de Cadix, le cap Trafalgar, le petit port de Tarifa, le plus proche de l'Afrique de toute l'Europe et qui marque le plus etroit du detroit de Gibraltar, Gibraltar, Marbella, Malaga, Alicante, les Baleares, Valencia, Barcelone, Collioures, Narbonne, Cette, Martigues, Marseille, Toulon, Saint-Tropez, Nice, Monaco, Genes, etc. Tout un chapitre est consacre' a' la Corse ; toutes les petites iles sont repertoriees avec de nombreux details interessants. Il s'agit bien d'un manuel de navigation tout a' fait important, de nombreux paragraphes attirent l'attention sur tel ou tel danger. Il est precede' par quelques termes de marine cotiere et suivi du code des saluts et de tables des declinaisons et amplitudes ortives du soleil.

Hamburg, Dohm, 1703. - Sehr frühe Ausgabe des barocken Reiseführers mit allen wissenswerten Details über das damalige Reisen, Reiserouten, Wegekosten, Logis, Münzwesen usw. Ferner viel über Reisegründe, Reisegruppen, Vorkehrungen für die persönliche Sicherheit und Krankheitsfälle. Im Anhang ein Verzeichnis der Postcourse für alle größeren Städte Europas. Die Karten zeigen Mitteleuropa, das Baltikum, Frankreich und Italien. Das Buch wurde bis ins späte 18. Jahrhundert immer wieder aufgelegt. Neben den genannten Ländern werden noch zwei Reisen nach Holland geschildert und die Städte ebenfalls ausführlich beschrieben. – Unterschiedlich gebräunt, zwei Karten mit kl. Einrissen. Quesnel des Prisons de Monseigneur l'Archeveque de Malines. - Monsieur le Marquis d'Aremberg est arrete, et pris, et conduit a la Bastille, ce qui se passe dans sa prison et sortie d'icelle. - Relation abregee de la Maladie et de la mort du Pere Pasquier Quesnel, pretre de l'Oratoire decede le 2 decembre 1719. - Copie du Testament du Pere Quesnel du 14 juillet 1719. Ce manuscrit a ete publie en 1718. Petit travail de vers sur les premiers feuillets.
