REYNARD THE FOX].
The most delectable history of Reynard the Fox. Newly Corrected and Purged, from all grossness in Phrase and Matter. Augmented and Enlarged with sundry Excellent Morals and Expositions upon every several Chapter. To which may now be added a Second Part of the said History: As also the Shifts of Reynardine the Son of Reynard the Fox, Together with his Life and Death, &c.
and T.J. for Edward Brewster, and Thomas Passenger, 170116811684, London, T. Ilive for Edward Brewster, A.M. and R.R. for Edward Brewster, - 3 parts in 1 vol. Sm.4to. Contemp. mottled calf, spine ribbed and gilt, with red title-label, red mottled edges. With large woodcut of King Lion's court on title and 61 large woodcuts in text, all signed EB, in the first part; and 15 large woodcuts, mostely repeats, in the second part. (160); (112); (4), 160 pp. One of the rare collected editions of three parts of the English Reynard the Fox. The first part, "The Most delectable History of Reynard the Fox", is here in the newly corrected younger English tradition with morals, in modernised language and divided into 25 chapters. This version was first published at London by Edward Alde in about 1620. Ours is dated 1701, and has a general title, comprising the two other parts as well. The second part, Containing Much Matter of Pleasure and Content. Written For the Delight of young Men, Pleasure of the Aged, and Profit of all. To which is added many Excellent Morals, was already promised by Alde in 1620, but only first appeared in 1672. Here dated 1681, it contains 32 chapters. The third part is published here for the first time. Dated 1684, the title reads: The Shifts of Reynaldine, the Son of Reynard the Fox, Or a Pleasant History of his Life and Death. Full of Variety, &c. And may fitly be applied to the Late Times. Now Published for the Reformation of Mens Manners. This part is unillustrated. The woodcuts, all signed EB, were probably cut by the publisher Edward Brewster. They are rather primitive but very charming and illustrative. The 62 woodcuts in the first part are printed from 39 differend blocks. The second part contains 15 woodcuts, of which five are repeated, but all are repeats from the first parts as well. Collected editions with two or three parts were only published between 1672 and 1701 in various combinations as all parts were published separately as well. Good copy, with the bookplate of L.H. Dorreboom.- (Binding very sl. rubbed). Menke V, B, c, and 35 (1st part), 29, (2nd part), and 30 (3rd part); Kirmse 15; not in Prien; Ebert II, 18879; Graesse VI, 85; Brunet IV, 1228. HOOGHE, Romain de
Esopus in Europa
1701 HOOGHE, Romeyn de. "Esopus in Europa." [26 Political Pamphlets]. [208] pp. A collection oftwenty six separate pamphlets, each with 4 leaves and an engraved frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe. Small square 4to., 198 x 154 mm, bound in contemporary quarter calf with original boards showing, spine with gilt. [Amsterdam: Sebastian Petzold], 1701-1702. First Edition of this rare collection of twenty-six satirical "fables," written and illustrated by Romeyn de Hooghe between 1701 and 1702. Esopus in Europa is the general name given to his collection of political pamphlets, each of them satirizing European politics by means of caricature based on Aesop's Fables. An engraved frontispiece by de Hooghe introduces each satirical "fable." De Hooghe's fables are especially critical of the colonial exploitation of South America and East India, with the attendant cruelties to native populations often the butt of the satire. A satirical book like the Esopus in Europa was expectedly subject to censorship. The total number of pamphlet numbered forty, but copies with all forty are very rare. Overall good impressions. Binding worn. Landwehr, R. de Hooghe as Book Illustrator 95 (for a list of the complete 40 parts). Hollstein IX, 204-43. Brunet I, 103. Muller 3017.

[HOOGHE, Romeyn de].
De Tyger voor Themis vierschaar.
Volgens de Romeinse Copy. (Amst., Sebastiaan Petzold), 1701.. 4to. Modern half blue cloth, with inside wrappers. With large engraving on title, showing Themis, or 'Lady Justice', sitting blind-folded and holding scales next to the 'Dutch Lion' in judgment over the 'French Tiger', with an Eagle as prosecutor. 8 pp.. First edition of one of the separately published political fables, published under the pseudonym of "Esopus" by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), famous Dutch artist and book illustrator. Published in 1701-1702 the fables sharply comment upon the political situation in Europe just before and after the death of Charles II of Spain. Each fable was illustrated with a large engraving on the title-page, and after they reached a total of 40, they were published collected, under the title "Esopus in Europa" (Aesop in Europe), and later also republished at the Hague in 1738-1739, both separately and collected. As depicted on the engraved plate, in the present fable the "Tiger", that is Louis XIV of France, is brought before the court of Themis (Justice), but the Dutch "Lion" gives the final verdict. Although the present pamphlet is exemplary for the genre, described in "Fabula Docet" as "Fabelbild auf politischem Flugblatt", no De Hooghe fables were present at the exhibition or listed in the catalogue "Fabula Docet". Fine copy, with the bookplate of F. Eickhoff. We have not been able to ascertain the correct number of plates for these two works but the first work has one folding plate of definitions and the second work a single plate and two folding plates including the impressive plate of mathematical instruments mentioned above. This third edition appears to be very scarce and we have only been able to find one auction result in the last twenty years or so, and that for a copy sold by Sotheby's, London on the 14th April 2005 for £1,800. (Wing M3008; Taylor, Tudor and Stuart 540) . Third Edition. Half Calf. Very Good. 12mo (11 x 17.0cm).

SERGARDI, Lodovico, psued.] ?Q[uinto]. SECTANI?
Satyrae. nunc primum in lucem editae.
?Apud Trifonem Bibliopolam in foro Palladio? [?Rome], 1701 - 12mo (141 × 78 mm), pp. [iv], lxxxxv, [1]. Woodcut vignette to title and various ornaments throughout. Closely-cut throughout with pagination, catchwords, signatures and footnotes shaved, one small old repair (D10) not affecting text. Eighteenth-century polished calf, gilt panelled spine with 5 raised bands, black morocco label, red edges. Slight abrasion to lower cover, label just chipped. A pretty copy. Quinto Sectani was the pseudonym used by Sienese born poet and papal official Lodovico Sergardi. His fourteen Latin satires mocked contemporary Roman society and, more particularly, the poet and jurist Giovanni Vincenzo Gravina. In 1690 Gravina was intrumental in creating the Accademia degli Arcadi, founded with the intention of reforming Italian poetry. Gravina?s writing was steeped influences from in the classical past, resulting in part from his researches into Roman law and history, which was an attitude quite in tune with the intentions of the Arcadians return to classical perfection in poetry. The Academy, however, soon found itself reverting to fashionable baroque style, a tendency deplored by Gravina, who tried to suppress any such backsliding. He alienated many of his former friends and colleagues and was the butt of frequent satires.Despite the claim of the title page (?nunc primum in lucem editae?) the Satyrae first appeated at Rome, with the same false imprint, in 1696 There seem to have been several pirated early pirated editions, as might be expected for a scurrilous work, which accused Gravina of both pedantry and paedophilia (Susan Dixon, Between the real and the ideal: the Accademia degli Arcadi and its garden in eighteenth-century Rome, 2006). Worldcat lists a single copy of this edition (Wake Forest University, NC). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Eigtved, Nicolai: Palace of Christian VII, Amalienborg, the (2 Volumes). Vol. I: Moltke House 1749-1794. Vol. II: the Royal Mansion 1794-1996
Denmark 1999. Described as one of the world's most perfect works of architecture, the Palace of Christian VII forms part of a unique architectural solution consisting of four identical mansions surrounding a square. Here, the work of architect Nicolai Eigtved (1701-1754) reached its culmination. With his richly varied yet carefully controlled style, Eigtved was among the foremost representatives of the Rococo in European architecture. The palace was built for the lord high chamberlain Adam Gottlob Moltke who demanded several refinements that helped make the mansion the most impressive private residence in Denmark. Gorgeously illustrated and comprehensive, these books share a detailed account of the process of building and furnishing the mansion in the 1700s, as well as presenting all later changes, concluding with the recent restoration and redecoration. Reynard the Fox.]
History, the most Delectable- of Reynard the Fox.
      T. Ilive for Edward Brewster, A.M. and R.R. for Edward Brewster, and T.J. for Edward Brewster, and Thomas Passenger, 1701, 1681, 1684, London - 3 parts in 1 vol. Sm.4to. (160); (112); (4), 160 pp. Contemporary mottled calf, spine ribbed and gilt, with red title-label, red mottled edges. With large woodcut of King Lion's court on title and 61 large woodcuts in text, all signed EB, in the first part; and 15 large woodcuts, mostely repeats, in the second part. The second part, "Containing Much Matter of Pleasure and Content. Written For the Delight of young Men, Pleasure of the Aged, and Profit of all. To which is added many Excellent Morals", was already promised by Alde in 1620, but only first appeared in 1672. Here dated 1681, it contains 32 chapters. The third part is published here for the first time. Dated 1684, the title reads: "The Shifts of Reynaldine, the Son of Reynard the Fox, Or a Pleasant History of his Life and Death. Full of Variety, &c. And may fitly be applied to the Late Times. Now Published for the Reformation of Mens Manners".

VIVIANI, Vincenzo (1622-1703) – LORENZINI, Giovanni Antonio (engr., 1665-1740)
De locis solidis secunda divinatio geometrica in quinque libros iniuria temporum amissos tristaei senioris geometrae
Florence: Typis regiae Celesitudinus, apud Petrum Antonium Brigonci, [1701]. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio (330 x 238mm). [24], 164, 128pp., 3 leaves of engraved plates by Giovanni Antonio Lorenzini (2 are double leaves) depicting one of Galileo’s bust, 2 double-page of Galileo’s house, woodcut diagrams throughout. Later mottled calf, spine gilt (lightly spotted; rubbed). First Edition of Vincenzo Viviani’s first written but last published work. Viviani was an Italian mathematician and scientist. In 1639, at the age of 17, he was an assistant of Galileo Galilei in Arcetri. Viviani remained there as his disciple until Galileo’s death in 1642. Throughout his life, one of Viviani’s main interests was in ancient Greek mathematics. As early as 1646, while collaborating with his mentor Evangelista Torricelli, Viviani was working on a project to restore the work of Aristaeus the Elder (c.370-c.300 B.C.). Aristaeus’ work is believed to have been the first methodical exposition of the curves discovered by Menaechmus, and was entitled Five Books concerning Solid Loci (Solid Loci is the Greek term for conic sections). The book had entirely been lost; however, Pappus of Alexandria (c.290-c.350) later indicated propositions from the work which aided Viviani in reconstructing the contents. It was a project that Viviani worked on for most of his life. In 1673 he published an edition of his restoration but he continued to work on it and his final effort, this copy, De locis solidis secunda divinatio geometrica… was published in 1701, only two years before his death. [Mackworth, Humphrey]:
A VINDICATION OF THE RIGHTS OF THE COMMONS OF ENGLAND. BY A MEMBER OF THE HONOURABLE THE HOUSE OF COMMONS
London:: Printed, and are to be sold by J. Nutt,. 1701. [12], 40pp. Folio, disbound. Light waterstains, a few small old ink spots on outer leaves, else text quite clean. Very Good. Mackworth argues that the Commons "have a discretionary power in the prosecution of impeachments" that is inviolable by the House of Lords and the Crown and essential to the protection of English liberties. A Whig, concerned that the "Happy Constitution of the Establish'd Government" be protected from encroachments by King and Lords, urges "a Prudent Distribution of Power, in the Original Frame and Constitution of the Government," among "Three Branches of the Supreme Authority." This constitutional essay on separation of powers, and limitations on the authority of rulers, expresses the Whig ideology that would, later in the century, influence colonial American thinking in the direction of independence. [REYNARD THE FOX].
London, T. Ilive for Edward Brewster, A.M. and R.R. for Edward Brewster, and T.J. for Edward Brewster, and Thomas Passenger, 1701, 1681, 1684. 3 parts in 1 vol. Sm.4to. Contemp. mottled calf, spine ribbed and gilt, with red title-label, red mottled edges.

Protestantisme
Recueil Des Edits, Declarations, Et Arrest Du Conseil, Rendus Au Sujet De La Religion Pretendue Reformée. Depuis 1679 Jusqu'À Present
A Paris: chez Charles Saugrain, 1701. Very good in very good dust jacket. -chez Charles Saugrain, A Paris _1701, in 8 (19, 5x12, 5cm), (20) 475 pp. (1) et 8, 4, 12, 8 pp., Un Vol. relié. -Edition originale.

"Perhaps inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, Lamy distinguishes between 'perspective aerienne' (aerial) and 'perspecitve lineale' (linear), which was not very common in his day. He mainly concerned himself with linear perspective. In his practice of perspective Lamy concentrated upon the construction of the image of a grid of squares by means of a distance point method. He then used the perspective grid for various procedures, such as determinging the perspective image of a plane configuration, constructing images on a vault, and creating an anamorphosis . " (K. Andersen). Bereits im folgenden Jahr (1702 und erneut 1710) erschien eine englische Uebersetzung, die zweifellos den britischen Mathematiker Book Taylor (1685-1731) und dessen Linear Perspective or a New Method von 1715 beeinflusste. Vagnetti EIVb1; Girbal, Bernard Lamy. Étude biographique et biliographique (1964), 99f. und 133; Kemp, Science of Art, 158, 236; Andersen, The Geometry of an Art (2007), 471f. First edition. "Perhaps inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, Lamy distinguishes between 'perspective aerienne' (aerial) and 'perspecitve lineale' (linear), which was not very common in his day. He then used the perspective grid for various procedures, such as determinging the perspective image of a plane configuration, constructing images on a vault, and creating an anamorphosis . " (K. Andersen). The following year an English translation was published and certainly influenced Book Taylor's 'Linear Perspective or a New Method' of 1715. - Contemporary vellum. In lucem altera vice editi à Johanne Nicolai.
Lugduni Batavorum, apud Cornelium Boutestein, 1701. - in-4. 8ff. 712pp. (i.e. 688). Bon exemplaire.
