An Exposition of the Creed
|
London: , 1701. Full-Leather. Seventh Edition revised and Corrected. To hold a book of such age and beauty is a wondrous thing. The leather is worn smooth, there is wear to the corners, and hundred of years of imperfection and yet this volume remains tightly bound and handsome with its raised sections of spine, still visible embossing to the front board, and bold red and black title page. Though no publisher is evident, it states, "Printed for B. Griffin, and Sam. Keble, and are to be fold at the Turks-Head in Fleetstreet 1701." The pages are mostly quite clean, with occasional foxing, but do exhibit crinkling and waviness throughout. 398 pages. All told, it needs a good home where it will be lovingly cared for..

|
Avignon: François Sebastien Offray, 1701. Folio (12 4/8 x 8 4/8 inches). Etched frontispiece, engraved portrait of Pope Clemens XI, and 6 engraved or etched plates, including one folding, and 7 engraved vignette headpieces by Ludo[vic] David after local Avignon artist Pierre Perru and Jean Cotelle II (1642-1708) ornamental painter at the court of Louis XIII, and P.D. Bassinet-Daugard (fl. 1670-1744) (some occasional minor spotting, a few leaves with minor marginal repairs and wormholes). Modern mottle calf antique, the spine decorated in six compartments with five raised bands, red morocco lettering piece in one (a bit rubbed). Provenance: The Paul and Marianne Gourary Collection of Illustrated Fete Books "Splendid Ceremonies", with their small bookplate on the front paste-down. First edition. The entrance into Avignon in 1701 of the royal brothers Louis of France (1682-1712), Duke of Burgundy, and Charles (1686-1714), Duke of Berry. Historically a catholic enclave Avignon had ruled by Popes rather than Kings of France: during the 14th century it was the official residence of Popes Clement V to Gregory XI. During the 15th-century it became the policy of the French kings to rule Avignon as part of their kingdom, and with a garrison just across the river at Villeneuves des Avignons the French were frequent invaders and occupiers. However between 1688 and 1768 was a time of relative peace with no wars or occupations, and Avignon was able to celebrate the entry of the royal Dukes with all the expected pomp and ceremony, and dedicate this book commemorating the festivities to Pope Clement XI. Seven monuments were constructed along the processional route, designed by Cotelle and Perru, each one elaborately decorated with ornaments, emblems, inscriptions, and medals. Three triumphal arches, and an equestrian statue were also erected to welcome the two ducal princes to Avignon. This copy includes the additional engraved portrait of Pope Clement XI, but is without the engraved plate of the jewels presented to the Dukes found in some copies. Berlin Kat. 3008; Ruggieri 534; Vinet 513 (calling for frontispiece and 6 plates); Watanabe 1990. Purchased for $1,250 at Christie's 12th June 2009, lot 27. WENING Michael 1645 1718
Closter Furstenzell
|
Munich: Johann Lucas Straub, 1701-26. Hand-coloured engraving by Wening. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and minor foxing. 10 3/8 x 27 5/8 inches. 12 x 29 inches. A fascinating and very beautiful print from Wening's rare work on the towns, castles and abbeys of Bavaria: 'Historico-topographica Descriptio' This image is from Wening's only major published work, a large-scale study of Bavarian towns, churches and mansions published in four volumes between 1701 and 1726. Wening, who was born in Nuremberg, moved to Munich in 1666 and was appointed court engraver in 1669. He applied to Maximilian Emanuel, Duke of Bavaria, for a privilege (i.e the right to publish) for his proposed visual record of the four districts of Bavaria. It was granted, and Wening began to make his drawings in November 1696. By January 1697 he had completed 131 drawings. Evidently, he did not always receive the welcome he thought his due from the Bavarian noblemen whose castles he was drawing, but this only seems to have served to inspire him to make his engravings even more spectacular in order to prove his worth as an artist to his doubtful hosts. The present image has a lively immediacy that is very attractive and often lacking in the work of Wening's contemporaries.

The first claims to be translated from the Italian but all titles by the "Gran Pescatore di Chiaravalle" are in languages other than Italian! The Metoposcopia et chiromantia curiosa deals with prediction of personality and destiny based on the pattern of lines on one's forehead and via the lines in one's palm. The Vollkommene Geomantia treates of divination by way of markings on the ground or how fistfuls of dirt land when tossed. This last work is supposedly based on researches in books on the subject written in Arabic, Italian, French, and English. Vollkommene: Jantz Collection, 3334. Neither work in Coumont, Demonology and Witchcraft. Contemporary vellum over paste boards, with slightly yapp edges; all edges red. Text unmarked and untattered. A very nice pair of uncommon books.

|
Barcelona: Juan Pablo Marti for Francisco Barnola, 1701. Scarce first edition of this curious funeral fête for Carlos II, generally regarded by posterity as the most stupid and ineffective of the Hapsburg kings of Spain, whose reign (1665-1700) saw the utter dismemberment of the kingdom by Louis XIV. Needless to say, this is not how he is regarded in this account of the funeral proceedings by the Jesuit Rocaberti, which in addition to the standard description of the public ceremonies and the unusually large catafalque (pictured), contains one feature we have never encountered in a funeral publication: some of the orations, laments, hymns and other literary texts are arrayed in calligrams, labyrinths and other graphically striking configurations. For example, the text of a Latin distich Mors rapuit Carolum (Death has snatched Charles) has been scrambled in a diamond-shaped pattern. * Palau 271,658; De Backer Sommervogel VI.1928.1.. 4to. [19.8 x 14.5 cm], (12) ff., 272 pp., (14) ff., 8 folding plates (that of the catafalque oversized & signed Francisco Gazan after Jos. Vives), and 1 printed in red and black. Bound in contemporary flexible vellum, title stenciled on spine in a neat hand. Ownership inscription of Juan Ant. de Figueras on front end leaf; some foxing and small, light waterstain on title and in upper margin of scattered leaves; some repairs to blank upper margin of approximately 15 leaves. Otherwise good.

Barcelona: Editado en la Imprenta de Ivan Pablo Marti por Francisco Barnola Impressor. 1701. Old full leather. 8vo (22) + 272 + (24) pp ills Good copy. Memorial to the death of Carlos II, with extraordinary illustrations and labyrinths - possibly extra-illustrated. 8vo; 9 folded plates; contemporary calf. First edition of a beautiful book in memory of the death of Carlos II published in Barcelona. It contains poetry in Latin, Catalán, and Castilian by different authors; it is unusual for the quality of the engravings and well as the typographic experiments and labyrinths that it holds; we bring special attention to an engraving of a typographic crown in two colors that Palau does not mention. According to Palau complete copies in good condition are rare. This is a good example of early Catalán illustration. 12mo (13.5 cm; 5.25"). Frontis., [5] ff., 250, [18] ff., [30] leaves of plates. Vollkommene: Jantz Collection, 3334. Neither work in Coumont, Demonology and Witchcraft. Contemporary vellum over paste boards, with slightly yapp edges; all edges red. Text unmarked and untattered. A very nice pair of uncommon books.

Herbert George
A Priest To The Temple: Or The Country Parson's Character And Rule of Holy Life. By Mr. G. Herbert Orator of the University of Cambridge. The Fourth Edition
|
London: Printed for Benj. Tooke, at the Middle-Temple-Gate in Fleetstreet, 1701. Duodecimo, 6 x 3.6 inches. Fourth edition. A12, a4, B-G12, I8. This clean and charming copy is still bound in its original English calfskin binding. The boards are speckled, the spine is tooled in gilt, even the old label is still intact. The front hinge is starting to crack, but the boards are still firmly attached. . "We may partly distinguish two poets in Herbert. There is, first, the parish priest of early seventeenth-century England who revered his Church as a chaste mother neither 'painted' nor 'undrest; who deplored the worm of schism eating away the English rose and (to the disturbance of the Cambridge licenser in 1633) saw Religion standing on tip-toe in our land, Readie to passe to the American strand;" who celebrated with loving particularity and complete security of belief the meaning of God's temple and worship. It is this poet who can be fully appreciated, in Coleridge's works, only by 'an affectionate and dutiful child of the Church;' and it is to Herbert's writings and life that we owe much of our picture of the order, strength, and beauty of seventeenth-century Anglicanism at its best. But church-bells are heard beyond the stars, and the Anglican parish priest meres with the larger poet, with the very human saint who gives fresh and moving utterance to the aspirations and failures of the spiritual life.

Camden's Britannia Abridg'D; With Improvements and Continuations to This Present Time; [Etc., Etc] All Plates Removed
|
London. Printed by J.B. for Joseph Wild at the Elephant at Charing-Cross, 1701. Poor Camden's Britannia Abridg'd; With Improvements and Continuations to this present time; To which are added Exact lists of the Present Nobility of England, Scotland and Ireland; Also a Valuation of all Ecclesiastical Preferments at the End of each County. With many other useful additions. The whole carefully perform'd and illustrated with above Sixty Maps exactly engraven. 2 volumes. London. Printed by J.B. for Joseph Wild at the Elephant at Charing-Cross. 1701. 822 + 103 pages. [ALL PLATES AND MAPS ARE MISSING] Once bound in late 19th century green cloth with gold lettering on the spine. Now both volumes nestle in the covers but neither is attached to them. Volume 1 text block still sewn together. 466 pages. Pages 297-304 are missing (4 pages). All the rest is here + dedication, preface, list of nobility (34 pages). Text block is shaken, but pages are complete and in good condition. Pages a little foxed only at the extreme outer edges, otherwise clean and white. Volume 2, like Vol 1 is still sewn together (and this volume is ever-so-tenuously still attached to the binding). Pages numbered 472-822 + 99 more pages (numbered 1-99) about Scotland and Ireland. Pages 624-656 are missing. Pagination seems to jump from 689 to 700 (they're the front and back of a single sheet, so there are no pages missing there). Then, after page 706, pagination jumps to 657-658-659-700 and then continues on from there to 822. The only pages, in all of this, that are definitely missing are 624-656. The rest might just be printers mistakes in pagination. As in Vol 1, text block is shaken, but paper is in good shape. A couple very loose sheets. Pages 781 to the end are, for some reason, quite neat and square still. All the maps have been removed from this volume, which is no doubt why is in such a disheveled state. There should have been about 60 plates – but the market for individual, framed maps was too great for some previous owner. The text, all that remains in this set, describes each county of Great Britain in sweet detail. Individual sections are individually dedicated, usually to the Lord or Lady of that county, sometimes to Knights and Squires, as well. The first edition of this book was 1695. This 1701 edition is the 2nd edition, abridged and improved from the first. This version is also much smaller; the first edition was a large folio.

Joh. Ernst Adelbulner for Wolfgang Moritz Endter, Nuremberg 1701 - Contemporary vellum over boards.BOUND WITHKÖNIG, Samuel. 8vo . FIRST EDITION of this version which has been greatly enlarged with new text and with the plates increased from 17 to 70; also included is a supplement (pp. 1139-1195) by the editor, Protestant theologian and poet, David Nerreter (1649-1726). The work deals with comparative religion and covers, inter alia, incantations, golem, the Jesuits, old household gods, the Inquisition, Kabbalah, magic, etc. The section on Africa and America (pp. 517-696) is illustrated with four engraved plates of the gods of the Incas and two folding plates of lurid and elaborate costumed scenes of cannibalism in the Americas; there is a good deal on the native religions in Florida, Virginia and New Netherlands as well the Spanish possessions. The first German version appeared in 1665, translated from the English edition of "A view of all the religions of the world" (London; 1653) by Alexander Ross who was master of Southampton Grammar School. "Describes religion in Mexico, New Netherland, Florida, & Virginia" (European Americana). "Nerreter's own essay. Ursprung der Abgötterey, appended by him to the translation, has its own title-page . The emphasis is still placed on the adventurous and the curious, but much material has been collected here. The viewpoint is, of course, Christian, all other religions being regarded as worship of the devil." (Faber du Faur). He also included a very detailed index.Bound at the end is a very rare religious treatise unrecorded in the OCLC and the KVK.
