LE GRAND, Antoine
Historia naturae, variis experimentis & ratiociniis elucidata. Secundum principia stabilita in institutione philosophiae edita ab eodem authore
Gerhard for Zieger, Nuremberg 1678 - Recent calf in an antique style 8vo . Second edition (first, London; 1673) and the first published in Germany of this "comprehensive treatise on the physical and natural sciences, of chemical interest, in which the author reduced the Cartesian method to the use of the schools. The French philosopher and Franciscan friar Le Grand (d. 1699), who was born at Douai, spent most of his life in England as a priest and teacher. He was a zealous follower of Descartes . There are references to glass lenses, Galileo, telescopes, lightning, and thunder, heart and circulation, etc. (Neville, English ed. 1673 only). "His History of Nature . was in nine parts. The first argued against the existence of a vacuum. The second, on qualities, held that even occult qualities might be explained in terms of the figures of corpuscles and pores. The third was a history of the universe with Le Grand’s opinion of the influence of celestial on inferior bodies. The other six dealt with the four elements, minerals, meteors, plants, animals, and man. Le Grand denied the influence of the moon, that the basilisk killed by its glance, that the corpse bleeds at the approach of the murderer, and that wearing laurel makes one immune from lightning" (Thorndike VIII, 286). [16], 445, [18] pp. With engraved title- frontispiece and 9 schematic text woodcuts. Usual browning due to quality of paper used; small title repair and small margin repair where a piece was cut from margin of one leaf (21/22) affecting several words. § Krivatsy 6805; cf Neu 2288 (London 1680 ed.); not in Houzeau-Lancaster.

GOLTZIUS, Hubert [1526-1583] [1526-1583]
Icones Vitae Et Elogia Imperatorum Romanorum, Ex Priscis Numismatibus Ad Vivum Delineatae, Et Brevi Narratione Historica
Antwerp: Plantin Press, Hieronymus Verdussen, 1678 [engraved title dated 1645]., 1678. folio. pp. xvi, [1 leaf], 423, [3], [1 leaf]. with half-title. title in red & black with woodcut printer's device. engraved title by Cornelis Galle after Peter Paul Rubens. 144 chiaroscuro medallion portraits printed in black & ochre from woodblocks cut by Christoffel Jegher (7 are double-numbered) plus 9 blank circular frames where no medals were known or available for copying. woodcut compass device on recto of last leaf. woodcut tailpieces & initials. contemporary vellum (some offsetting from cuts as always, occasional light spotting). This study of Roman antique coins by Dutch antiquary, painter and engraver Hubert Goltz or Goltzius, was the earliest book on numismatics to be published in the Netherlands, and remained a standard reference for Roman coins until the mid eighteenth century. Illustrating the text is a series of woodcut medallion portraits of the Roman Emperors up to Charles V, printed in chiaroscuro, a method of colour printing achieved by the use of a combination of line and tone woodblocks on one subject. The chiaroscuro woodcuts for the first edition of 1557 were executed by Josse Gietleugen, and are the earliest example of the technique in the Netherlands. In 1645 a new edition of Goltzius' work was published, with important additions to the text by Jan Kaspar Gevartius, and with chiaroscuro woodcuts by Christoffel Jegher [1596-1652]. Most of Jegher's portraits were copied from the earlier cuts of Gietleugen, but ten were entirely new, the work of Jegher and Erasmus Guellinus (see Voet II p. 225). Funck describes Jegher's cuts as "plus belles and plus nettes". [BOUND WITH:] NONNIUS, Ludovicus [1555-1646]. Commentarius In Huberti Goltzius Graeciam, Insulas, Et Asiam Minorem. folio. pp. 14 p.l. (incl. 2 blanks), 326, [14]. with half-title. engraved title by Michel Lasne after Peter Paul Rubens. 64 full-page copper engravings on 32 leaves. woodcut initials. (occasional light spotting). Antwerp: Plantin Press, Balthasar Moretus, 1644. The Commentarius is a study of the Greek Empire during the reign of Alexander the Great. It contains copper-engraved representations of Greek coins followed by Nonnius' explanatory text, including discussion of allegorical personifications found on the coins. Although the original work was prepared by Goltzius in the late 1550's, it was not first published until 1618, by Nonnius and Jacob de Bie. cfBrunet II 1653. cfGraesse III 113. Funck 324. First collected edition these three fascinating dissertations on the nature of water nymphs and the daemons succubi and incubi. They first appeared at the University of Leipzig: the first, on succubi and incubi, was presented in 1671 with Johann Valentin Merbitz as praeses and Johann Gottfried Jahn as respondent; the second, "De Nymphis nobis Wasser-Nixeen" originally appeared in 1673 and the last, on the same subject, in 1675.#11;Johann Valentin Merbitz (1650-1704) produced these three dissertations while earning his Magister degree at Leipzig. Wanley, Nathaniel
The Wonders of the Little World: Or, a General History of Man in Six Books
London:: T. Basset., 1678. 653pp + 4pp. index. A highly interesting study of the enlightenment world by Wanley. He seemed especially interested in the varities of humaninty as expressed in their individual nature. Many remarkable anecdotes and descriptions of 18th century life."Bodily strength has won the admiration --I might almost say, the worship--of mankind from the days of Hercules and his ten mythical labors, to the days of Sandow with his scores of actual achievements. Each generation has produced its quota of strongmen, but almost all of them have resorted to some sort of artifice or subterfuge in order to appear superhumanly strong. That is to say, they added brain to their brawn, and it is a difficult question whether their efforts deserve to be called trickery or good showmanship". Original boards show some wear and scuffing but remarkably sound and in tact. Small unobtusive worm hole on the edge of the first few pages in no way affecting the text.. First Edition. Full Comtemporary Brown Calf. Very Good. Thick Folio.

Amsterdam, Timotheus ten Hoorn, 1678.. 12mo. Contemporary vellum. Engraved frontispiece and 10 full-page engravings. (8), 160, 45 pp.. Original and only edition of a refutation of a book that had appeared under the pseudonym Hippolytus de Vrije ('The free Hippolyte'), in the same year: De tien vermakelijkheden van het huwelijk ('The ten amusements of marriage'). The author probably was the printer Hieronymus Sweerts (1629 - 1696) who had a popular, ironic and sometimes even light erotic satire on the pleasures of marriage, which immediately had such a success that a second edition had to be printed within a couple of weeks. The ironically described 'pleasures' start with the first courting and end with the festivities around the first born baby. The booklet, which is in fact an adaption of Les quinze joies de marriage, written by De la Valle in the beginning of the 15th century, is important for our knowledge of everyday life and domestic customs in the Dutch Golden Age. In this refutation, also published under a pseudonym (Petrus de Vergenoegde (' Peter Content')), the author attacks this, to his opinion too liberal book and tries to give a moralistic answer, stressing the importance, the necessity and the real delicacies of being married and advising an early marriage: De tien delicatessen des huwelyks. Ironically enough the book is illustrated with the same engravings as in the De tien vermakelijkheden. With a seperate title-page a poem is added describing the celebration of a St. Nicolas-evening, one of the famous Dutch traditions taking place on the 5th of December. Good copy. Waller 1626; De Kempenaar 476 (both - probably wrongly - suggesting that Hieronymus Sweerts is also the author of De delicatessen); Cat Scheepers I, 460; Introduction of: H. Sweerts, De tien vermakelijkheden van het huwelijk. Toel. E.K. Grootes & R. Winkelman (Amsterdam 1988).

Two parts in one, small octavo. (The second part, with its own title-page, is Barrows' short lecture on Archimedes.) [16], 402; [2], 22 pp. Some mispagination. Illustrated with woodcut diagrams throughout. [Bound with:] Barrow, Isaac. Lectio Reverendi et Doctissimi Viri Beatae Memoriae. London: Typis J. Redmayne, 1678.Small octavo. [2], 22 pp. Contemporary calf , rebacked to style. Gilt morocco spine label, edges sprinkled red. Several ink ownership signatures on front pastedown, including an eighteenth-century one ("Digby Shuttleworth"), and one dated 1813. Two nineteenth-century bookplates, one of "Dalton Haskell Serrell, Haddon Lodge, Dorset." Additional ink ownership marks of Shuttleworth, "E. Coll. Exon:oxon," on title-page. A very good and interesting copy. Fourth edition of Barrow's Euclid, first edition of his Lectio. The text of Euclid, edited by Isaac Barrow (1630-1677) was first published at Cambridge in 1655. This posthumous edition was corrected by Isaac Newton, Barrow's pupil (and sucessor as Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge), and seen through the press by John Collins. It included additions to the 1657 edition, and had appended to it Barrow's short lecture on Archimedes, with a separate title-page. (The later was apparently sold as a separate pamphlet, and separately it brought £220 in the Honeyman sale. ) To these are added the first edition of Barrow's Lectio Reverendii, also with its separate title-page. Butler, Samuel, 1612-1680
Hudibras First, Second and Third parts. Written in the time of the late wars. Corrected and amended with several additions and annotations.
Printed by T.N. for John Martyn and Henry Herringman, at the Bell in St. Pauls Churchyard, and at the Anchor in the lower walk of the New Exchange, 1678 (Parts 1 & 2). Printed for simon Miller, at the sighn of the star at the Well end of St. Pauls., London - 3 green leather hardcover 16mo. 4.25 x 6.75 inch volumes bound in one. 202 pp., 223-412 pp., 1-285 pp. Extremely scarce. Hudibras was written between 1660 and 1680 and is a satire on the Cromwellians and on the Presbyterian church written by a confirmed Royalist and Anglican. Hudibras, a colonel in the Cromwellian army, is involved in various comic misadventures and is shown to be stupid, greedy and dishonest. The poem is very well written in Chaucerian couplets and was popular for about 150 years, as long as its political attitudes were also popular. The Nineteenth Century saw the reinvention of Cromwell in the popular imagination from usurper and tyrant to heroic upholder of English freedom, and Hudibras was out. I feel it's time for a reassessment, so here it is. We guarantee prompt shipping and complete satisfaction. Good with leather spine label lacking and one loose signature. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(BEVERLAND, Adrianus van).
Eroticism and the original sin Peccatum originale [GREEK TEXT] sic nuncupatum, philologice [GREEK TEXT] elucubratum Themidis alumno. Vera redit facies, dissimulata perit.
Eleutheropoli (=Leiden), extra plateam obscuram ... (in fine : In horto Hesperidem, typis Adami et Evae terrae filii, 1678).. 8vo. Contemporary vellum, double gilt fillets on both sides. (10), 146, (4) pp.. Rare original edition of this highly controversial and anonymously published work in which Van Beverland claims that the only sin of Adam and Eve was their 'conversatio carnalis' and that the original sin was nothing else than the erotic stimulus present in every human being. This thesis was not new and Van Beverland had borrowed it from Henricus Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim's De originali peccato (Lyon, ca. 1550). After the pantheist R. Fludd had focussed attention again on this idea in the beginning of the 17th century, Van Beverland tried to prove it with loads of citations from the Bible, Church fathers and Latin and Greek authors with the result that Church authorities in the Netherlands got furious. When a second and adapted edition appeared a year later, in 1679, with his name on the title, he was immediately arrested and banned from Holland. Van Beverland fled to England and lived there for years under the patronage of Isaac Vossiuis, who was, together with Nicolaus Heinsius, one of his best friends and protectors; he studied in Oxford, where he also brought together an important collection of rare books, paintings and prints.Van Beverland (1650-1712) was rich, gifted and learned but used his abilities to live a dissipated life and to publish a number of 'scandalous' books, among which this book on the original sin is the first and perhaps most important one. The book was dedicated to an anonymous friend, which probably is Jacobus de Goyer from Utrecht. References to the work are almost always to the second edition which appeared under his own name and which is far less rare that the first. Two French translations or adaptations appeared both in the the same year: 1714, one by J.F. Bernard ( Histoire de l'etat de l'homme dans le peche originel ) ansd the other by Fontenai ( Etat de l'homme dans le peche boriginel ); a German translation of the former was published in 1746. Good copy.- (Some browning throughout; library stamp cut out from the title). NNBW VII, cols. 126-7; P. de la Rue, Gelett. Zeeland , p. 10-1; Clement, p. 272; A. Gerbi, Il peccato di Adamo ed Eva, storia della ipotesi di Beverland . Milan 1933; W. Elias, Het Spinozistisch erotisme van Adriaan van Beverland . Fabrici, Girolamo.
L'opere chirurgiche...
Bologna: Longhi, 1678. Fabrizio, Girolamo [Fabricius ab Aquapendente]. (ca. 1533-1619). L'opere chirurgiche. . . . Folio. [12] 359 [1]pp. 9 engraved plates of orthopedic and surgical instruments, the first signed "Gio. Bettamini fece," the rest unsigned. Bologna: Gioseffo Longhi, 1678. 328 x 217 mm. Modern vellum, leather spine label. Inner margin of half-title expertly repaired, moderate browning and foxing. Very good copy. First Edition in Italian of Fabrizio's collected surgical works, first published in Latin in an unillustrated small-format edition in 1619. The plates illustrating this Italian edition first appeared in the 1647 folio Latin edition issued by Bolzetta; these were reproduced in later editions and translations. This edition of Fabrizio's collected surgical works contains Italian translations of the Pentateuchos cheirurgicum (first ed. 1592) and the Operationes chirurgicae, originally published in 1619."The five books of the Pentateuchos are primarily devoted to the description of tumors, wounds, ulcers and fistulas, fractures, and dislocations; to these the Operationes adds a description of surgical instruments (some of which are illustrated) and classic surgical techniques, including a discussion of particular technical expedients devised by Fabricius himself and emphasizing some differences between Fabrizio's technique and that of others" (DSB). Of particular interest is Fabrizio's extensive discussion of dentistry and oral surgery, in which he describes techniques for various operations such as tartar removal, treatment of dental caries, the filing and extraction of teeth, tooth replacement, and the treatment of lockjaw and jaw dislocations. "One noteworthy item, which must be regarded as progress, is that we do not find a single word in [Fabrizio's] work about loosening teeth through cauterizing agents, the treatment which was so highly cultivated by the Arabs and so eagerly incorporated in the West" (Hoffmann-Axthelm, Hist. Dentistry, p. 143; also pp. 142 & 144). Fabrizio described several dental instruments, such as the "pelican" for tooth extraction, the crow's bill forceps for removing roots, the stork's bill forceps for removing incisors, the "dog's bite" forceps, a drill, a rasper, etc. These are not shown here, but were illustrated by Scultetus, pupil of Fabrizio's successor Spigelius, in his Armamentarium chirurgicum (1655 and numerous later eds.). Also of interest is the suit of orthopedic armor designed by Fabrizio and illustrated in the first two plates; this device "was in the shape of a man, [and] designed to combine in one apparatus the principles for all existing devices for the correction of orthopedic injuries and deformities" (DSB).

LE GRAND, Antoine
Historia naturae, variis experimentis & ratiociniis elucidata. Secundumprincipia stabilita in institutione philosophiae edita ab eodem authore
Gerhard for Zieger Nuremberg 1678 Recent calf in an antique style 8vo . He was a zealous follower of Descartes ... There are references to glass lenses, Galileo, telescopes, lightning, and thunder, heart and circulation, etc. (Neville, English ed. 1673 only). "His History of Nature ... was in nine parts. The first argued against the existence of a vacuum. The second, on qualities, held that even occult qualities might be explained in terms of the figures of corpuscles and pores. The third was a history of the universe with Le Grands opinion of the influence of celestial on inferior bodies. Krivatsy 6805; cf Neu 2288 (London 1680 ed.); not in Houzeau-Lancaster.

[BOILEAU, Jacques] COOKE, Edward, trans.
A just and seasonable reprehension of naked breasts and shoulders. Written by a grave and learned papist.
London: Jonathan Edwin, 1678. 8vo. [xvi], 150 (i.e. 152), [7] pp. Contemporary polished calf, decorated in blind, spine gilt in compartments; minor spotting. First edition in English, from the original French entitled De l'Abus des Nudités de Gorge printed in 1675. Understandably, it is a bit disconcerting when you are at a ball, or even at church, and see ladies, young and old, evidencing unreasonable décolletage. Not the appropriate way to be seen, says our intrepid author, Jacques Boileau (1635-1716). He was the older brother of the more famous French poet and critic Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux (1636-1711), and in addition to the present witticism, penned works such as Historia confessionis auricularis (1683), proving the need for confession, and Historia flagellantium (1700), detailing the abusive practice of self-flagellation. This work is a diatribe against the then current fashion for women to show too much, which arose following the Restoration. The preface is by Richard Baxter (1615-1691), a chaplain in Cromwell's army, who served a year in prison for his blunt speaking. Baxter explains that even though the author was a papist, he is quite correct in his position. He takes the author's lessons a step further by proposing specific alterations of fashions, both for women in their dresses, and for men with respect to their periwigs.

London Robert Pawlet; Robert Pawlet; H. Hills et al. 1678, 1679, 1679 - 3 books bound as a single volume. First editions of each. Folio, in a binding by Weitz Coleman of full soft rose-coloured calf, the upper covers gilt paneled in regency style, the spine with gilt stippled and blind ruled raised bands, two compartments with lettering in gilt, marbled endpapers. 84; 92; 84 pp. Internally a very well preserved copy with only minor occasional spotting, a few leaves a touch thumbed, the modern binding fine but for some very minor rubbing the soft calf. THREE CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNTS OF TRIALS RELATED TO THE ÒPOPISH PLOTÓ, the fictitious Catholic conspiracy concocted by Titus Oates, one of historyÕs greatest perjurers. Oates made allegations of a vast Catholic plot to kill King Charles II which created a state of near hysteria and led to the execution of at least 15 people. The plot would not begin to unravel till 1681, after the publication of these trial accounts. Oates would eventually be convicted of purger. The first book is the trial of three men personally arrested by Titus Oates in the area of London commonly occupied by Jesuits and home to the Spanish Ambassador. William Ireland and Thomas Pickering, now Catholic Martyrs, were beatified in 1929 by Pope Pius XI. The second book is concerned with the trial for the murder Sir Edmund Godfrey. Godfrey was a member of Parliament, and a strong supporter of Protestantism. The finding of his body on October 17 of 1678 sent the Protestant population into an uproar. Many of his supporters blamed the murder on the Catholic Church. Titus Oates seized on this murder as proof that the Plot was true, and his charges were taken up by the public. To this day, no one is certain as to exactly who killed Sir Edmund Godfrey. There is some speculation that Oates himself may have committed the murder to advance his claims, but there is no known evidence to support the claim. Prior to the murder, ,much of the public paid little attention to OatesÕ claims of a ÒPopish PlotÓ but GodfreyÕs death caused a tipping point to be reached as regarded public opinion. By the time of the third trial in 1679 the hysteria had begun to die down. In the earlier trials, guilty verdicts had been handed down quite quickly, but sometime in 1679 the courts had begun to see the fragility of OatesÕ legal positions and the lack of substantive evidence. Consequent to this, many of the trials ended in not guilty verdicts being handed down. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

LA FAYETTE
La princesse de Clèves
      Claude Barbin, Paris 1678 - 4 tomes en 2 volumes in-12. Reliés en maroquin citron, triple filet doré sur les plats, dos à nerfs ornés, doublure de maroquin rouge encadrée d'une large roulette dorée, tranches dorées. Chambolle-Duru. PRECIEUSE EDITION ORIGINALE DE L'UNE DES PRINCIPALES OEUVRES LITTERAIRES FRANÇAISES DU XVIIE SIECLE. Paru le 17 mars 1678 le livre eut un immense succès oeuvre représentative de toute la nouvelle école littéraire, c'est le premier livre qui corresponde à la conception moderne du roman ; le grand mérite de l'auteur étant d'avoir su concilier dans ce roman d'analyse la subtilité romanesque de l'esprit précieux et la vérité sobre et éternelle du classicisme. L'oeuvre fait revivre également des figures historiques : Henri II, Catherine de Médicis, Diane de Poitiers, Marie Stuart, des intrigues réelles de cette fin de règne d'Henri II et du début du règne de François II. Par une transposition inconsciente l'atmosphère de la cour de Louis XIV est souvent évoquée. Précieux exemplaire de cette édition originale recherchée, grand de marges (hauteur : 154 mm) et finement relie par Chambolle-Duru en maroquin double de maroquin. BOUCHOTTE (Jean Baptiste Noël);
Journal.
Plate 14, Bala
Amsterdam - Hendrik Adriaan Van Rheede tot Draakestein A selection from Hortus Malabaricus Engravings with original hand color: 15" x 19" (23" x 27" framed). Amsterdam, 1678-1693. Hendrik Van Rheede's sumptuous Hortus Malabaricus is the oldest comprehensive printed book on the exotic plant life of Asia and of the tropics. The work was undertaken when Van Rheede was the Dutch Governor of Cochin, a princely state of India, and was published in Amsterdam from 1678 through 1693 as twelve double-folio volumes. Mentioned in these volumes are plants of the Malabar region, which in his time referred to the stretch along the Western Ghats from Goa to Kanyakumari. The ethno-medical information presented in the work was extracted from palm leaf manuscripts by a famous practitioner of herbal medicine named Itty Achuden. The publication was a massive undertaking. The work took thirty years to compile and was edited by a team of nearly a hundred contributors, including physicians, professors of medicine and botany, amateur botanists (such as Arnold Seyn, Theodore Jansson of Almeloveen, Paul Herman, Johannes Munnicks, Joannes Commelinus, Abraham Poot), Indian scholars and vaidyas (physicians) of Malabar and adjacent regions, and technicians, illustrators and engravers, together with the collaboration of company officials and clergymen. Van Rheede was also assisted by the King of Cochin and the ruling Zamorin of Calicut. The publication is of great importance today as a rare record of the rich botany of Malabar (Kerala) and curative uses of native plants, and is the only source of information about ancient Indian medicinal plants. Comprising 1,595 pages of text, the book contains descriptions in Latin and illustrations of 742 plants. Included in the plant descriptions are the medical properties of the plants, the respective diseases for which they were used for treatment and the modes of treatment as known to the ancient, renowned traditional physicians of Malabar. The plants are described under their names in the regional language of Malayalam, which was the language used by the natives of Cohin during the seventeenth century. The plates of the plants themselves are copperplate engravings with beautiful hand coloring. Additionally, the introductions, forewords, dedications, and other details given in the various volumes contain much information about the cultural, social, political, historical and linguistic conditions of India.

Popish Plot] [Stayley, William]
An Account of the Digging Up of the Quarters of William Stayley, Lately Executed for High Treason, for that His Relations Abused the Kings Mercy
Printed for Robert Pawlet at the Sign of the Bible in Chancery-Lance [sic], London 1678 - Broadside, 10 by 14.25 inches (253 x 360 mm). Imprimatur Novemb. 30th. 1678. William Scroggs. In 1678, rumors circulated in London that English Catholics, supported by the Jesuits, planned to kill King Charles II so his brother James, a Catholic, could assume the throne. In the end, nearly three dozen people were executed for treason, and William Stayley was the first unlucky soul. He was overheard in a tavern saying that Charles II "is a great Heretick, and the greatest Rogue in the World; there?s the heart and here?s the hand that would kill him." Stayley confessed and according to this broadside, was "to be drawn on a Sledge to the place of Execution, there to be hanged by the Neck, cut down alive, his Quarters to be severed and disposed of as the King should think fit, and his Bowels burnt; which sentence.was accordingly executed at the common place of Execution: And his Quarters were brought back and left at Newgate in order to be set up on the Gates of the City of London, as his Head on London Bridge, as Traytors Quarters usually are." However, Stayley was very penitent and asked for the king's mercy, who allowed the execution to take place, but agreed to give Stayley's body to his friends for a proper burial. Stayley's friends, however, "caused several Masses to be said over his Quarters, and used other Ceremonies according to the manner of the Church of Rome and.made a pompous and great Funeral" at the Church of Saint Paul, in Covent Garden. The king was not pleased and ordered Stayley's body dug up, carried to Newgate, and hung on the Gates of London. There was no sight quite like the Gates of London after a good execution and disinterment. Reference: Wing (2nd ed., 1994), A276 Old folds, paper unevenly trimmed on left edge, small spot of discoloration on last line; generally very good. [Attributes: First Edition]

It was compiled and printed by Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede tot Draakestein, the then Dutch Governor of Cochin, a princely state of India, and published in 12 volumes, double folio size, in Amsterdam from 1678 through 1693. Van Rheede’s "Hortus Malabaricus" is the result of 30 years of compiling and editing information from a team of the best of 17th century European physicians, scientest, technicians, illustrators and engravers, which collaboration of scholars from all over India. It is of great importance today as a rare record of the plant wealth of Kerala (India) and medicinal uses of those plants, and is the only source of information about ancient Indian medicinal plants. The entire text of this book is in Latin. Comprising 1,595 pages of text, the original book contains descriptions and illustrations of 742 plants. Included in the plant descriptions are the medical properties of the plants, the respective diseases for which they were used for treatment and the modes of treatment as known to the ancient, renowned traditional physicians of Malabar (Kerala). The plants are described under their names in the regional language of Malayalam, which was the language used by the natives of Cohin during the 17th century. The plates of the plants themselves are copperplate engravings with beautiful hand coloring. Additionally, the introductions, forewards, dedications and other details given in the various volumes contain much information about the cultural, social, political, historical and linguistic conditions of India.
