Delizioso, graffiante pamphlet attribuito a Gregorio Leti (cfr. Librinlinea, Biblioteche Piemontesi On Line), nonchè anche al terribile Ferrante Pallavicino (1615-1644). Sei esemplari censiti in SBN. Willems, Les Elzevier, p. 479, n. 1774; 596. Murray, Catalogue, 1452.

E[VELYN], J[OHN]
PUBLICK EMPLOYMENT AND AN ACTIVE LIFE PREFER'D TO SOLITUDE, AND ALL ITS APPANAGES, SUCH AS FAME, COMMAND, RICHES, CONVERSATION, &C
London: Printed by J.M. for H. Herringman, 1667. FIRST EDITION, First Issue (without the errata slip found below the imprimatur in the second issue).. Thin diagonal crack across spine in one place, lower joint with one-inch crack at bottom, corners rather worn and paper covers rather chafed, as expected, but the fragile binding still solid and really quite appealing as a remarkable survival. Final leaf a trifle foxed in upper margin, but AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY INTERNALLY, unusually fresh, clean, and bright, and with deep impressions of the type.. London: Printed by J.M. for H. Herringman, 1667. 154 x 95 mm. (6 x 3 3/4"). Front pastedown with with small embossed armorial stamp of the Macclesfield Library and front pastedown with matching armorial Macclesfield bookplate. Front flyleaf with three-line annotation in an early hand. Keynes 85; Wing E-3510. Best known as a diarist and as founder of the Royal Society, Evelyn (1620-1706) published a number of important books (either original works or translations from the French) on architecture, arboriculture, gardening, and navigation. The present work is a cordial attack, made without passion, on George Mackenzie's A Moral Essay Preferring Solitude to Publick Employment, published in 1665. As Keynes indicates, Evelyn and Mackenzie were congenial adversaries in the debate over the best way to lead one's life, partly because Evelyn was of two minds about the matter. Keynes says, Evelyn's advocacy of an active life might seem at variance with his known delight in country solitude and pursuits, and in truth his attack upon Mackenzie is but a half-hearted affair. In any case, the book is worth reading, if only for the amusing caricatures of country pleasures and types. Surprisingly, ABPC lists just two copies of this work other than ours at auction during the past 20 years. The internal condition here is remarkably fine, as is typical of many books from the library of the Earl of Macclesfield. Early (probably 18th century) inexpensive (perhaps even temporary) vellum-backed marbled paper boards, small paper label at bottom of spine.

Thomas Matthias Götzens, Franckfurt 1667 - Modern full morocco gilt in an antique style of the period 8vo . FIRST EDITION of this very rare collection of three alchemical texts. "Contains some very curious pictorial symbols" (Duveen). The Opera Vegetabilia (pp. 161-316) and the tract by Sendivogius' servant (pp. 319-381) have separate title-pages. "The 'Philosophical Hand,' engraving and name, was adopted by a certain Justus Simplicius Hortulanus for a tract on the philosopher's stone, which see [verso of title-page]. The difference is that while Hollandus uses certain pictorial symbols of his own in the engraving, he gives the ordinary chemical symbols for the salts intended in the text, and it is these which are used by Hortulanus" (Ferguson). The second work is attributed to Michal Sedziwój (ca. 1556-ca. 1646.) and has its own title: Ein überauss Kostlicher Philosoph. Tractat which deals with various alchemical processes including transmutation. The preface to the Opus vegetabile purports to be from a manuscript written by Hollandus himself (p. 170). It is believed that the works attributed to Holland actually belong to two people; a father and son named Johann Isaac and Isaac. Ferguson in his Bibliotheca Chemica was uncertain as to the period and authorship of the Hollandus literature, however, more recent historians of early chemistry have ascertained that the works attributed to the supposed father and son are post-Paracelsan (see Stillman's History of Alchemy and Partington for a detail discussion). The Hollandus works were highly praised by Boyle, Glauber, Kunckel, and Boerhaave. He was said to have been skillful in enameling and in imitating precious stones with Antonio Neri, in his treatise on glassmaking of 1612, referring to "this method of imitating gems which I received (or obtained) from Isaac Hollandus when I was in Flanders." Ben Johnson, in the Alchemist (London; 1610), states: "The spirit of dead Holland, living Isaac you'ld swear were in him." This suggests that Johann Isaac was still living in 1610. The OCLC locates only two copies (one is the Duveen-Neu copy = University of Wisconsin). Beautifully illustrated with text engravings of alchemical instruments (full-page illustration on verso of title) and symbols as well as some woodcuts 384 (i.e. 382) pp. With 16 text woodcuts and 12 engravings (2 full-page) of alchemical equipment and symbols. § VD17 39:116939A; Ferguson I, 413; Duveen 301; Bolton I, 993-94; Gmelin I, 129; Neu 2075; Partington II, pp. 203-208; Stillman pp. 368 ff.; not in Neville Collection. MERRETT, Christopher
Pinax rerum naturalium britannicarum, continens vegetabilia, animalia, et fossilia in hac insula reperta inchoatus.
typis T. Roycroft,, London 1667 - Modern calf in an antique style 8vo . Second edition, first issue (& first available) of "The earliest attempt at a classification of the animals, plants, and minerals of Great Britain. Merrett (1614-1695), physician, writer, and original member of the Royal Society, was the first curator of the museum and library given by William Harvey to the Royal College of Physicians. He contributed to some of Robert Boyle's works and in 1662 translated into English Neri's great book of 1612 on the manufacture of glass. The Pinax, Merrett's main work, was written because William How's Phytologia Britannica (London, 1650) was out of print. The botanical section (165 pp.) lists over 1,400 species arranged alphabetically, with synonyms from Gerard, Parkinson, Turner, et al. The section on birds (pp. 170-184) is the first detailed list of British birds ever published. The 'Pinax will always rank as one of the most important milestones . of the natural history of this country as if was the first attempt to provide a catalogue of the native species' (Lisney, Bibliop. British Lepidoptera, 43). In the Epistola Merrett discusses chemical principles and condemns alchemy. Almost all copies of the first edition (printed Aug. 1666) were destroyed in the Great Fire of London (2-6 September 1666). The author corrected the first edition and had it reprinted (as here) with the date in Roman numerals. Some copies were reissued later in 1667 with a cancel title, dated in Arabic numerals, and 'Editio secunda' added" (Neville Collection II, 165-6). [32], 223, [1] pp. Tiny repair to blank margin of title-page. 2 woodcut folding plates. § DSB, IX, 313; Ferchl, 353-4; Henrey 98-100; Keynes, 3233; Krivatsey, 7831; Partington II, 368; Thorndike, VIII, 69; Wing M1840.

(Leti, Gregorio)
Melzi, Vol. I, p. 238; NUC vol. 118, p. 434; Bruni-Evans, Italian 17th Century Books in Cambridge Libraries, p. 185, n. 2935.

House of Commons. Committee to Enquire into the Burning of London.
A True and Faithful Account of the Several Informations Exhibited To the Honorable Committee appointed by the Parliament To Inquire into the late Dreadful Burning Of the city of London, together With other Information touching the insolency of ...
1667 House of Commons, London. 34pp (last leaf missing resulting in "A Warning to Protestants" on p34 truncated); 12mo pamphlet with victorian hardcover binding: marbled boards with end-papers and flyleafs added, gilt lettered glazed purple cloth spine; bookplate of Armorial William Allen Potter to front paste-down. Pamphlet is neatly bound with fore-edges of leaves uniformly trimmed, some leaves were trimmed right up to the text. Binding is very neat and tidy with sharp corners and miniscule wear to extremities; spine has bright gilt, light spine fade and a light bump to head of spine. Kircher, Athansius.
China monumentis qua Sacris qua Profanis, Nec von variis Naturae et Artis spectaculis, Aliarumque rerum memorabilium Argumentis illustrata ...
Amsterdam,Apud Joannem Janssonium a Waesberge et Elizeum Weyerstraet,1667.. Folio. 9 Blatt, 237 Seiten, 5 Blatt.

Amsterdam, Apud Joannem Janssonium à Waesberge et Elizeum Weyerstraet 1667. Folio. 9 Blatt, 237 Seiten, 5 Blatt.

Referencias: Palau 57910; Retana 15; Retana, Epítome, 49; Medina, Filipinas, 193; Robertson 120 EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT BOOK ON THE SOUTHERN PHILIPPINE ISLANDS with the first ethnographic description of its people, languages and natural history by the Jesuit Procurator of the Philippines from 1638. This elegantly written work remained the authority on the region for two centuries; Combes personally visited most of the localities described here, and of particular importance are his notices of the Negritos, then common on Mindanao but who had almost entirely disappeared today. "Exceedingly rare first edition" (Maggs). Title page and first leaf restored, minimal restoration to four leaves at the upper corner no affecting, some browning.

?ICT?E / BOILEAU, GILLES.
La Vie d'Epictete, et a Philosophie. Troisiéme Edition. Reveue & augmentée.
Paris, Guillaume de Luyne, Librairie Iuré, 1667. 12°. 297, 16 nn. pages. Reliure originale. Original leather. Some damages to upper and lower hinges - boards bumped. Binding firm and strong. Few markings in text. (Wikipedia) Gilles Boileau (Paris, 22 October 1631 – 18 March 1669), the elder brother of the more famous Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux, was a French translator and member of the Académie française. He was well regarded as a classicist by his contemporaries and published a verse translation of the fourth book of the Aeneid and prose translations of writings of Diogenes Laertius and of Epictetus, whose life he wrote. He received a royal sinecure as contrôleur de l’argenterie du roi, and though his poetry is generally accounted mediocre, he was elected to the Académie française in January 1659, an event that gave rise to an incident that proved divisive in the French world of letters. The elder Boileau (who alone carried the name during his lifetime, the brother, with whom he was on ill terms in later years, being called "Despréaux") had attacked in print Mlle de Scudéry and the grammarian and lexicographer Gilles Ménage, two friends of Paul Pellisson, who mounted a campaign against the election of Gilles Boileau. In the affair Jean Chapelain, whose disastrous epic La Pucelle had been severely criticised by Pellisson, nevertheless came to defend him; doubtless, his own enmity for Boileau was affected by the satiric parody of Le Cid, Le Chapelain décoiffé (1665), jointly written by the brothers Boileau and occasioned by Chapelain's selection by Colbert to oversee the choices of authors to receive royal pensions. After the election of Gilles Boileau, pressed by Pierre Séguier, Pellisson avoided meetings of the Académie for a decade, until after Boileau's death. (Source of all articles: Wikipedia)

Small folio. Woodcut city arms on title printed in red and black, full-page engraved allegorical frontispiece, full-page engraved dedication to the government of Delft, and 21 engraved plates, comprising 2 folding maps, 1 large folding panoramic view, 17 folding architectural views and 1 full-page plate of city seals. Contemporary calf, spine richly gilt, red morocco title-label.
. 22, 804 [=812], (14, 2 blank) pp. Nijhoff & V. Hattum 34 .First and only edition of the classic eighteenth-century history and description of Delft, adapting and updating Dirk Evertsz. van Bleyswijk's 1667 description and ca. 1680 supplement. Many of the beautiful plates, and the map engraved for Van Bleyswijk were used here again. The state of Holland had opened a new munitions magazine in 1692, so Boitet added a plate to show the new building in addition to the old. The frontispiece and dedication engraving, and apparently the two maps (showing Delft in 1560 and 1672) were also newly engraved for this edition. The present folio format served the engraved illustrations better than the quarto of 1667-ca. 1680, so that the splendid large panoramic view of Delft (44 x 124 cm) originally designed to appear above Van Bleyswijk's separately published map could be included, along with the large map of Delft in the year 1672 (41,5 x 53.5 cm). The architectural views taken from Van Bleyswijk (mostly etched by Coenraet Decker, also responsible for the panorama), are also better served. While much of the text inevitably followed Van Bleyswijk, the revisions and additions were made by several hands. The bookseller Reinier Boitet, who published the book, played a leading role, with contributions by Hugo van Heussen, Hendrik van Rijn and others.Good copy, text underlined in red & blue pencil on several pages, tear in the bottom of p. 281, few pencil notes in the margins. COMBES, Francisco

COMBES, Francisco

TESAURO (Emanuele).
Patriarchae sive Christi Servatoris Genealogia, per Mundi Aetates traducta.
Rothomagi, apud Richard Lallemant, 1667.. in-12. 4ff. 175pp. 3ff. Paris 1790". Trous de vers marginaux. Rousseurs. Papier bruni. Manque a Brunet et a Graesse..

[THE COMPANY OF THE ROYAL FISHING]
To the Kings most excellent Matie: The humble petition of the Governor & Company of the Royall ffisheing.
n.d. [ca.1667-8] Manuscript on paper, folio (305 x 195 mm) on two conjugate leaves with a total of 56 lines of text, blank[?] piece torn away from 2nd leaf but almost certainly not affecting text, unbound. A few very minor edge nicks but overall in good, legible, state of preservation. The petitioners prayed for a Royal grant to the Company of the 'sole power of coyneing & uttering of farthings' for such time as the King thinks fit. A proposal to the Company to this effect had been made by Sir Edward Ford (1605-1670), the royalist soldier and inventor. The farthings were 'not to be counterfeyted without present discovery to give satisfactory securety to prevent the exportacion of the silver and gould of the nation by the importation of counterfeits, and the People from having such [kept] putt uppon them to their preiudice By retakeing all farthings he utters at the same rate he vents them And all other farthings that doe imitate his at the same rate To give 21s. in farthings for 20s. in sterling silver And 5s. out of every 20s. to the Royall Fisheing'. The conjugate leaf sets out further supposed advantages which would accrue to the King himself, to the state, and to the Company. 'Lastly', the petitioners declare, 'the sum that the making of these tokens will (in all probabilety) produce for ye fisheing (is humbly conceived) will be suffycyent to lay a foundation to that great worke, (whereby in few yeares) Twenty times more bullion will really be brought, or kept yearly in this Kingdome for ever, than can be pretended to be expected by your Maiesties alloweing the proposed tokens'. Related papers occur in the State Papers under date 4 Jan. (1667?), commencing with an Order at a general meeting of the Company, approving the proposal of Sir Edward Forde and the petition founded on it. They appointed a Committee to present it to Charles II, prepare arguments in its favour, and attend the Council to speak in its defence. The other papers are a copy of the petition, and a statement of the inconveniencees and losses resulting from the issue of tradesmen's tokens (Calendar of State Papers Domestic, 1666-67, p.439). The subject reappears in the State Papers of 1668. The petition had been delayed by the Dutch war; the Commissioners for Fishing had agreed with Forde for 5s. in the pound for 80,000 to be made in one year, and he urged the completion of the proposal, as the only way to support the fishery. The King had declared himself against private individuals having liberty to coin - if any such were permitted, the great labours of the company would come to nought. (Calendar of State Papers Domestic, 1668-69, p.137). Nothing more has been found in the State Papers to 1670. Charles II was already interested in the national currency of farthings issued in 1672. Forde obtained a patent for coining farthings in Ireland, but died there before he could carry it into execution.

Index Librorum Prohibitorum et Expurgantodum Novissimi, Hispanicus et Romanus. Ill. Ac. R. D. D. Antonii a Sotomaior.
Ex Typographaeo Didaci Diaz,, Madrid: 1667 - 3 hojas+XXXI+52 hojas+992 páginas. [Junto con:] Index librorum prohibitorum Alexandri VII. Roma: Typographia Rev. Cam.

Jules Renouard - Tillemont was a French historian and priest. He received his education at Port Royal in the Petites Écoles and then at Beauvais in the seminary. Later, in 1667, he again resided at Port Royal and, though a member of the Jansenist community, he avoided the controversies associated with it. During these times, he collaborated with others on several historical projects, including an edition of patristic texts. He eventually relocated to Tillemont when the Port Royal community was dispersed in 1679, spending his time there in pious practices and in the study of history. Thus he spent two years putting together notes on Saint Louis for Lemaistre de Lacy, who, however, did not live long enough to use them. It was only later, in 1847, that these notes were published under the auspices of the Socià tà de l'histoire de France and the editorship of J. De Gaulle (though a pirated edition was made in 1688 by Filleau de la Chaise). Tillemont is generally regarded as a most thorough and accurate historian. 8vo (15.5cm x 23.5cm). Bound in full red morocco, gilt-stamped emblem to both boards with blind decorative fillet and inside dentelles. 5 compartments to spine, gilt title and volume numbers. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Bookplate of Joseph M. Gleason on front paste-down endpapers. Library numbers in black on spines. Light foxing throughout. A beautifully bound set in very good condition.

(Ford, Simon)
Londini Quod Reliquum or Londons Remains : In Latin and English
London Sa. Gellibrand 1667. A scarce work of poetry lamenting the losses in the Great Fire, in a splendidly pompous and overblown style. If William McGonagall had been around in the 1660s and read rather more classical authors this would surely have been the result. Take his verse on St. Paul's Cathedral (the old one) for example 'This was said some, Pauls reverend edifice / The World did not its like comprise / A Carved roof its marble pillars crown'd / And these to that, vast Arches bound / It's monstrous length to that unlearned sight / The Floor and Cieling did unite'. Add to that the fact that the whole thing is also printed in Latin, and you have a marvellous, sprawling would-be epic, top-heavy with classical allusions and purple prose. Bound in modern orange paper wraps. The title page and final leaf a little dustsoiled. Minor slight loss to corners of first couple of leaves not affecting text. Latin and English on opposite pages in duplicate. Followed by 'Actio in Londini Incendiarios'. (3), 16 (actually 32), (1) ; 16 pages. Collated complete. Repaired closed tear to D3. We can send images of this book on request. First Edition No Jacket Paper Wraps 4to - 7.75 Inches; First Edition. Good

Sulzbach: Abraham Lichtenthaler, 1667., 1667. 12mo. pp. 17 p.l., 107, [1]. engraved title by F.Franck & 36 engraved plates. contemporary vellum (some light foxing & browning). First Edition. An interesting work on the physiology of speech and the instruction of deaf-mutes by Belgian alchemist Franciscus Mercurius Van Helmont. Helmont maintained that Hebrew was the simplest and most natural language and the easiest for a deaf person to learn, the Hebrew characters for letters representing exactly the motions and configurations of the tongue and mouth which were required to produce the sounds of the letters. Letters and configurations are shown on the thirty-six engraved plates. Using these images Helmont claimed to have successfully taught deaf-mutes to articulate the alphabet on first sight. "An extraordinary book.you will praise the man who first shewed how the human mouth and its organs are adjusted in the pronunciation of each letter, and who also (though not the first) taught the deaf to speak." HOLLAND, Johann Isaac
Item:
Franckfurt: Thomas Matthias Götzens. 1667. Modern full morocco gilt in an antique style of the period 8vo . 368 ff.; not in Neville Collection

GUALDO PRIORATO (G.)]
Dos frotté, or effacé.

With portrait of the author, the fine engraved title page and the folding table. (16), 744, (64) pp. 8vo. Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine, a very good copy. Macdonald & Hargreaves 47a; Knuttel, Verboden Boeken, 185; PMM 138 (for the first edition). The very rare reprint of the 1667 edition: this copy carries the title-page with the date 1667, but the engraved title is dated 1672 and the first line under the portrait of Hobbes is different from the first line under the portrait in the 1667 edition. Collation and content are identical, either edition is very rare. The political events in England in the latter part of the first half of the century provided a fitting prelude to the publication of Leviathan. Charles I was executed in 1649 and, until 1653, when Cromwell was made Protector, there was constant discussion and experimentation to find an appropriate form of government. Leviathan, published in 1651, was therefore very topical. It came out strongly in favor of absolute and undivided sovereignty, without the usual arguments from divine right. Indeed, Hobbes conceded popular representation but, by an ingenious twisting of the social contract theory, showed that it logically implied the acceptance of undivided sovereignty. 'Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury is a unique figure in the history of English political thought. His defense of absolutism, unpopular from the day it was published to the present, is based on expediency. The individual (except to save his life) should always submit to the State, because any gouvernment is better than the anarchy of the natural state. Though his ideas have never appealed to proponents of the individual rights of man or to the modern totalitarians with their mystical vision of Volk, the fundamental nature of Hobbes's speculation has stimulated philosophers from Spinoza to John Stuart Mill' (PMM exhibition catalogue, 272). The book was forbidden in the Netherlands and condamned on 19 July 1674. The translation of the most horrible book of those days in the Netherlands is most likely due to Lambert van Velthuysen. - Binding slightly loosening, leaf Z2 with a small hole causing loss of a few letters.

      - 22, 804 [=812], (14, 2 blank) pp. Nijhoff & V. Hattum 34.First and only edition of the classic eighteenth-century history and description of Delft, adapting and updating Dirk Evertsz. van Bleyswijk's 1667 description and ca.
