Willis, John
Mnemonica, or The art of memory : drained out of the pure fountains of art & nature. Digested into three books. Also a physical treatise of cherishing natural memory; diligently collected out of divers learned mens writings
|
London : printed and are to be sold by Leonard Sowersby, at the Turn-stile, near New-market, in Lincolns-Inn fields, 1661.. Octavo, . First edition of the Sowersby translation. A-M8 One full page woodcut of a (memory) theater . This copy is bound in full contemporary, sheep with blind ruled borders and spine. It exhibits light browning but is, otherwise, clean and free of defect. . Mnemonica is interesting chiefly because of its use of the Elizabethan theater as a memory locus. Dividing a theater in half, lengthwise, Willis produces what he terms a memory repository having two rooms, designed for very simple mnemotechnic, such as shopping lists or prices. The importance of Willis' work lies in its probable influence on Robert Fludd (1574-1637). In the second part of his Utriusque Cosmoi Maioris scilicet et Minoris, Metaphysica, Physica atque Technica Historia (Oppenheim, 1619), Fludd develops this use of the theater as a memory locus along Hermetic-cabalist lines. Frances Yates points out that Fludd uses as his model locus the famous Globe Theater in London. Willis may also be the inspiration behid Fludd's theaters of Night and Day in the zodiac, parts of an occult memory system. Mnemonica was translated into English by Leonard Sowersby in 1661.

Paris: Estienne Loyson, 1661. - 12mo (140 × 88 mm), pp. [xii] (including engraved title), 406, [2] (privilege), several mispaginations. Very lightly browned. Contemporary limp vellum, spine lettered in early manuscript "Poësies Heroiques". Binding soiled and lightly loose, front pastedown defective. A good, unsophisticated copy. First appearance of many of these verses and songs and of an important musical comedy acted before the King at Issy in April 1659: considered "le premier essai de ce genre de spectacle en France" (Gay). The collection also includes the words for motets sung at the marriage of the King?s brother Philippe to Henriette d?Angleterre (Charles I of England?s youngest daughter) in March 1661.Pierre Perrin was a central figure in musical and theatrical life at the court of Louis XVI, and was indeed an originator of the great French tradition of musical comedy. He founded the Académie Royale de Musique, which was to eventually become the Opéra de Paris but after a series of disastrous financil dealings he was imprisonned for debts and had to sell his privilege to his powerful and better remembered contemporary, Jean-Baptiste Lully. Perrin died in poverty. Cioranescu 4467; Gay III, 519.

|
Fair leather. A Paris, Chez Noel Charles, M.DC.LXI [1661]. Hardcover. 17th century calf; front board detached & rear board lacking, endpapers missing, pages clean, light foxing to title page, leather worn, pages clean with light age toning. Spine in 6 compartments. 1078 numbered pages plus the title, preliminaries and tables. Thick 8vo (octavo). LES EPISTRES SPIRITUELLES DU BIEN-HEUREUX FRANCOIS DE SALES, Evesque et Prince de Geneve, Fondateur de lOrdre de la Visitation de Saincte Marie. Divise en Sept Livres. I. Contenant celles quil a escrit aux Papes, Cardinaux, Eveques, Roys, & Princes. II. Plusiers beaux enseignemens touchant la Devotion, lOraison, Meditation, Confession & Communion ... These letters were never intended for publication, but the authors saintly reputation led to a demand for them, and his cousin facilitated their publication. About a third of the letters relate to personal matters, but the majority concern spiritual direction. There are two elements in the spiritual life: first, a struggle against our lower nature; secondly, union of our wills with God, in other words, penance and love. St. Francis de Sales looks chiefly to love. In this volume we find the major themes of Salesian spirituality. [Publisher: Chez Noel Charles]

PEREFIXE DE BEAUMONT (Hardouin de);

Brunet, IV, 491 ; Willems, 1272 ; Rahir, 1309.

ROGERS, GEORGE.:
THE HORN EXALTED OR ROOME FOR CUCKOLDS.
|
Publisher: London, 1661.Being a treatise concerning the reason and original of the word Cuckold, and why such are said to wear horns. Very proper for these times, when men are butting, and pushing, and goring, and horning one another. Also an appendix concerning women and jealousie. FIRST EDITION, London, printed for J. Cadwel, 1661. Small 8vo, 165 x 100 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, LACKING FRONTISPIECE SUPPLIED IN MODERN FACSIMILE, and lacking a blank leaf at beginning and end, and the leaf following the title page, most likely the Dedication, colophon leaf is present, pages (12), 84, (2), signatures: *1-*8 (-*1, *3), A-E8, F4 (-F4), catchword on *7v is a printer's mistake, pagination irregular but text collated and guaranteed complete, bound in early full leather, blind rules to covers, gilt rules and small gilt heraldic motif to spine, gilt lettered morocco label. Binding worn, a few tiny chips to covers and small chip to leather at lower corner of upper cover, 25 mm (1¼ inch) missing from head of spine, tiny chip and pinhole to tail of upper hinge, front inner paper hinge cracked, small note on front endpaper, rear free endpaper missing, 2 lines written in Latin at top of colophon page. Binding tight and firm. A good copy. ESTC R209943 locates only 2 copies in U. K. libraries. Wing attributes authorship to George Rogers (1618-1697) a medical man who trained in Padua and then went into practice in London, eventually becoming the president of the College of Physicians. However the ODNB does not list this amongst his works. In the Preface to this serio-comic work, published to coincide with the celebrations for the restoration of the monarchy (and in an act of remarkable prescience about what would notoriously prove to be one of the major preoccupations of that new anti-puritan era), seeing ‘the general verge of the people to merryment’, the author expresses the hope that ‘this piece of drollery’ on the subject of cuckoldry might prove ‘acceptable’ to his readers. The first part runs to page 35, The Appendix on Women and Jealousy is slightly larger occupying page 37 to 84. Wing (2nd ed.) R1802. Images sent on request.

Milano, Stampa Archiepiscopale 1661, Second Edition, Hardcover. Good with no dust jacket. woodcuts, Engravings; Folio 13" - 23" tal; (xii) 406 (vi) pages; {Architettura Civile Demostrativemente Proportionata et Accresciuta di Nuove Regole. } Contemporary plain vellum backed with plain paper, later hand-lettered spine title, pages, complete with elaborate engraved extra allegorical title but lacking frontis engraved portrait, text with several hundred geometricals worked into the text plus scattered engraved decorations and some partial-page plates. Lacking top 2" of spine with chipping and partial tears to remaining spine and front hinge section, cover panels with minor wear, text still quite solid and clean, brief aging, several leaves folded at fore-edge margin to incorporate engraved designs which extend into margins. Berlin Katalog 589. Riccardi II, 222. Graesse V, 58. Not in Fowler and many other standard references. Quite scarce contemporary publication of Osio's simplified method for the construction of the orders of architecture through angles alone, without arithmetic divisions and without modules. Initially published in Milan in 1641 (of the greatest scarcity). In fact, any early editions are excessively difficult to encounter, for Osio represents a Neanderthal line of architectural reasoning. He was a principal source for the writings of Guarini, but his approach ultimately proved to be unproductive as architecture developed according to strict measured drawings based upon mathematics and other sciences. Imagine the Hoover Dam built in the method of the pyramids, with a guy standing on an adjacent hill and giving instructions based on what he saw instead of relying on the physics of poured concrete, knowledge of the pressure of water, and an understanding of the geological features. WorldCat locates 6 copies. AE locates none at auction. Architecture -- Architectural drawing. Architecture -- Domestic. Drawing -- TechniqueArchitectural orders. Geometry and geometrical drawing. Drawing -- Technique -- Materials. Proportion. Treatises , watermark (anchor? ) ; printed marginalia ; ill. Iter Boreale. Together with some other select poems, not heretofore printed.
|
London: Printed for L.F. 1661. First edition thus. 8vo., pp. 63 [i]. Margins cut close (but never affecting text), lightly toned throughout. Early 20th-century mid-brown calf, spine vertically gilt-lettered, just very lightly rubbed and scratched. Ownership inscription of ‘Chaundy’ dated 29-04-1932 to rear pastedown. The second edition of satirical poet and nonconformist minister Robert Wild’s ‘Iter Boreale’, and the first edition of the other included poems (some 2/3rds of the volume). The Iter Boreale was very popular, being first published on 23rd April, 1660, and seeing several issues and at least two continuations by other hands in the same year. This edition appeared the next year, and there were a total of eight by 1674, with this one among the rarest, ESTC showing holdings for only eight copies (four US, four UK). Pepys read the Iter Boreale, and ‘like[d] it pretty well but not so as it was cried up’ (quot. in ODNB). Most of the additional poems in this edition are elegies for the Earl of Essex and several puritan ministers, although also included are ‘The Norfolk and Wisbech Cock-Fight’ and a poem ‘Upon some bottles of Sack and Claret’. A True Gentlewomans Delight. Wherein is contained all manner of Cookery: [with] A Choice Manuall, or Rare and Select Secrets in Physick and Chyurgery:
|
W. G. Gent, London 1661 - A True Gentlewomans Delight. Wherein is contained all manner of Cookery: Together with Preserving, Conserving, Drying, and Candying. Very necessary for all Ladies and Gentlewomen bound together with: A Choice Manuall, or Rare and Select Secrets in Physick and Chyurgery: Collected, and practised by the Right Honourable, the Contelsse of Kent, late deceased. Whereto are added several Experiments of the Virtue of Fascon pounder, and Lavis contra Yarvam, by a Professor of Physick. [by Elizabeth Grey, Countess of Kent] issued London: 1661, by W. G. Gent. pp. 233 (plus index), 140. The Thirteen Edition. Period full calf binding, spine blind-ruled into compartments, boards blindruled in outline, engraved portrait frontis. Fascinating, charming and rare mid 17th century reference on home remedies for a wide range of conditions and illnesses, using tradional recipes, bound with the first cookbook written by a woman. Both works appear to have been written by the author mentioned in the preliminary title, and whose finely-engraved portrait faces the frontis. In Good+ mostly clean, tight, sound condition. Leather lightly scuffed and rubbed in spots, joint leather rubbed and splitting a tiny bit (both boards very firm & tight), some hand-written notes to bottom of frontis, light scattered spotting or foxing to textblock, few scattered leaves with short edge tears, lacks blank endpapers, etc. Volume remains tight & sound, showing.light signs of age and usage. A book which is normally found either disbound or heavily used. Lacking 8 leaves scattered throughout the first work (of 174 leaves). Second work on cookery is complete. It would appear that long ago someone needed the cure or remedy described on each of these leaves. Book does retain, however, the engraved portrait frontis which is typically lacking when one encounters this work (only 3 examples have been auctioned in the past approximate 15 years, all lacking the frontis portrait). Given the intended setting and purpose of use, and how poor the known extant examples are, remaining a nice survival overall. A fascinating and rare pocket sized volume written by and intended for a woman about domestic arts, for use in a domestic setting. Measures c. 2 1/4" W x 4 1/2" H Wing, K310-317 (not noting this 1661 edition) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Wherein Their Pretended Sanctity is Refuted, and a Further Inspection Made Into the lives and Practices of Those Unhappy and Trayterous Politicians. By a Person of Quality
|
London By the Several Booksellers in London and Westminster 1661 - First Edition. With an engraved frontispiece featuring portraits of the ten subjects of the book surrounding a portrait of Cromwell. Small 8vo, in antique calf probably of the 18th century, the boards are double ruled in gilt, the spine with blind tooled compartments between gilt ruled raised bands. [iii], 139 pp. A well preserved copy, internally with only expected toning, the plate remounted and inserted as a frontispiece, the binding with some age-wear and with some tenderness to the upper hinge and a bit of loss to the leather of the spine, without labels to the spine. A SCARCE FIRST EDITION AND QUITE IMPORTANT PRINTED PROPAGANDA FROM THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR. This collection is reputed to be speeches, letters and prayers written or spoken by ten Regicides among the first to be executed during the Restoration. It is by some, regarded as spurious. The collector, Òa person of qualityÓ, initials his introduction to the reader as ÒW.S.Ó but much of the work is an exact reprint of material published in 1660 under a different title and, also spuriously, credited to Thomas Harrison. There were a great number of forged speeches and prayers printed after the Restoration, and countless accounts of purges during the trials. But they were all, for a time, a significant force in the swaying of public opinion back to the side of the Royalists. The Regicides whose pretended speeches, letters and prayers are here supplied are; Thomas Harrison, John Carew, John Cook, Hugh Peters, Thomas Scott, Gregory Clement, Adrian Scroope, John Jones, Francis Hacker and Daniel Axtell. All of whom were hung and drawn and quartered from October 13th to 19th of 1660. Harrison was the first of the Regicides to be found guilty and to be formally executed, but many, many more would follow. Samuel Pepys wrote an eyewitness account of HarrisonÕs execution, in which he said Harrison, Òlooked as cheerful as any man could do in that conditionÓ. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Ulm 1661 - Johann Bayer (1572-1625) Uranometria, omnium asterismorum continens schemata, nova methodo delineata, aeris laminis expressa Hand-colored copperplate engraving by Alexander Mair (later color) Vlmae: Suptibus Iohannis Gorlini, 1661 12 x 16; 24 x 27 3/4 framed Though he was a lawyer and not an astronomer by profession, Johann Bayer created one of the most memorable seventeenth-century guides to the constellations, entitled Uranometria in honor of Urania, the muse of astronomy. First published in Augsburg in 1603, the Uranometria included celestial maps that were not only highly appealing on a visual level, but also significant in the history of astronomy. They were the first charts to identify astral magnitude (brightness) with a lettering system, using Greek characters for the brighter stars and Roman letters for the fainter. Although the Italian cartographer Alessandro Piccolomini had earlier used a somewhat similar system, it was not until Augustin Royer used the Bayer letters in 1679, followed shortly by John Flamsteed, that the system gained currency among celestial chartmakers. Bayers atlas also added twelve new constellations, in the southern sky, to the forty-eight of Ptolemy. Bayers stellar lettering system, which we still use for stars visible to the naked eye, and his presentation of the recently discovered constellations were significant contributions to celestial cartography. Ironically, it may be that his work on the atlas had an ulterior motive. Bayer, by profession a lawyer, was really an amateur astronomer. He dedicated his atlas to the city council and to two leading citizens of Augsburg, who rewarded him with an honorarium and, later, a seat on the council as legal adviser. In any event, these are important star charts of considerable charm from the early seventeenth century. The hand-coloring showcased in this work is outstanding and unsurpassed. All of the maps feature rich, dark blue backgrounds and gold or silver leafing.

A TREATISE OF THE SIBYLS,
|
London, 1661. so highly celebrated, as well by the antient heathens, as the holy fathers of the church; giving an accompt of the names, and number of the Sibyls, of their qualities, the form and matter of their verses; as also of the books now extant under their names, and the errours crept into Christian religion, from the impostures contained therein, particularly, concerning the state of the just, and unjust after death. ... Englished by J. Davies. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, translated by J. Davies, printed by T(homas) R(oycroft) for the author, 1661. Folio, 285 x 185 mm, 11¼ x 7¼ inches, pages (4), 293, (7), head-pieces and decorated initials to chapter headings, bound in full contemporary calf, blind tooled border to covers, rebacked in lighter leather, gilt rules and original gilt lettered label to spine, new endpapers. Covers slightly marked, small scrape to leather on lower cover, engraved armorial bookplate preserved on front pastedown (Thomas Fuller M.D. (1634-1734) physician and preacher who published a compilation of proverbs entitled Gnomologia), 1 page has small pale ink stain, just affecting 1 word, 1 small corner tip torn off, otherwise text clean and binding tight and firm. A very good copy.DAVID BLONDEL (1591-1655), was a French Protestant clergyman, historian and classical scholar. In 1650 he succeeded G. J. Vossius in the professorship of history at Amsterdam. His works were very numerous; in some of them he showed a remarkable critical faculty, as in his dissertation on Pope Joan (1647, 1657), in which he came to the conclusion, now universally accepted, that the whole story is a mere myth. Considerable Protestant indignation was excited against him on account of this book. His work on the Sibyls of classical times was first published in French in 1649. Images sent on request.

Della Bella, Stefano. [Entreé du Prince di Toscane, Représentant Hércul]. Etching, 1661. The first of three etchings from the festival book Il mondo festeggiante: balletto a cavallo, fatto nel teatro congiunto al palazzo del sereniss. gran duca, per le reali nozze de' serenissimi principi Cosimo Terzo di Toscana, e Margherita Luisa d'Orleans. In Firenze: Nella Stamperia di S.A.S., 1661. (Etching on paper 17 1/8 x 9 1/16", with margins. Mounted on laid paper. An excellent impression, in very good and clean condition, with slight chipping and some minor repairs). By Stefano della Bella after G.A. Moniglia. The most arresting of the three Della Bella etchings taken from the festival book Il mondo festiggiante (1661), which describes the marriage festival, entries and equestrian ballets composed in honor of the marriage of Cosimo II Grand Duke of Tuscany to Margherita Luisa d'Orleans, June 1661. This plate pictures a backdrop constructed for the huge half-oval behind the Pitti Palace. A circle of obelisks is placed at the center. Groups of decorated coaches are surrounded by foot soldiers and a circle of riders. Atlas with the heavens on his shoulders is most visible in the center of the etchings, having come to tell those on earth that Hercules, along with the sun god Apollo and the goddess of the moon Diana, has descended from heaven to attend these nuptials. Dudley, Robert (1574-1649)
[California & the Pacific Northwest] Carta Particolare Dello Stretto Di Iezo Fra L'America E L'Isola Iezo
|
. [Florence: Guiseppi Cocchini, 1661]. Copper-engraved map, in excellent condition. 21 3/8 x 16 7/8 inches. The rare chart of California and the Pacific Northwest from the second edition of Dudley's 'Arcano del Mare, ' the first sea atlas by an Englishman; and the first atlas with all the charts based on Mercator's Projection. Sir Robert Dudley was the son of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, the paramour of Queen Elizabeth I. His desire to marry the Queen led the elder Dudley to have his marriage declared invalid, and his children, thus, illegitimate. The younger Dudley was nevertheless one of the richest men in England when James I came to the throne. A prolonged quarrel in court led to Dudley's leaving for Florence, where he spent the rest of his life as a leading member of the Medici court. It was in Florence over a twelve year period that he prepared his great Arcano del Mare. This chart of the Pacific Northwest is typical of the high quality of the work in the atlas. The quality of the engraving and lettering is of the highest order. The chart shows all of the American Pacific coast from San Francisco Bay north to the Arctic. Several of the California place names, such as Po(r)to di Nueva Albion for San Francisco, are taken from the voyage of Sir Francis Drake. C. Mendocino is clearly marked. Further north, much of the detail is conjectural, as these regions were little-known in Dudley's day. Costa Brava di Quivera is shown. Nevertheless, the chart is a fascinating look at 17th century geographical thought concerning the present areas of Oregon, Washington State, British Columbia, and Alaska.

Books of Kells (Das Book of Kells) Fine Facsimile Illuminated Edition of 8th Century
|
Faksimile Verlag Luzern. New Book of Kells, 8th century-Trinity College Library, Dublin, Ms. 58 (A. I.6) One of the Most Mysterious Art Treasures Mystical Testimony to Early Irish Christendom Irish monks, once the storms of the mass migrations had quietened down, took to spread the Christian faith all over Europe by their dedicated mission during the 5th, 6th and 7th centuries. The age-old Irish-Celtic culture began to fuse with the impressions gathered by the monks during their extended dangerous travels. At that time, also called The Time of Scholars and Saints, the Irish monasteries were influential cultural and spiritual centres of Europe. At the height of Irish monasticism its most precious work was created, the Book of Kells. A Masterpiece Created 1200 Years Ago Soon after that the manuscript was found buried at Kells. And it would remain there until, during the reign of Cromwell, it was brought to Dublin for safety reasons. Around 1661 Henry Jones, bishop of Meath, donated it to the library of Trinity College where it is kept to this day. The Pinnacle of Early Medieval Bookmaking There are very few other works which express a similar symbolic power and magical radiation as this magnificent Gospel Book. Its mysticism lies in its rich and complex decoration. The impression of the holiness of the text is enhanced by its decorative apparatus which seems truly supernatural. Analysts examining the style of the decorative elements used in the Book of Kells have come to ascribe it to an artistic tradition which is also found in other works of art of the same period. However, too little information survives to exactly localise and date the manuscript according to its geographical or historical background. Letters Evolve into Pictures and Pictures into Letters The Book of Kells contains mainly the Four Gospels. However, other texts were also included in the book; at the beginning of the book, the canonical tables which contain the concordance compiled by Eusebius of Caesarea, and a number of prope

The completed design surveys the four orders of created things, each book confining itself to a single province" (Manning, The Emblem, S. 120). "Diese Ordnung nach natürlichen Sachgebieten weist Camerarius als Naturwissenschaftler aus, der . jedem dieser Lebewesen eine bzw. mehrere emblematische Deutungen beilegt. In diesem Sinne handelt es sich . um einen naturwissenschaftlichen Katalog emblematischer Art, der nach Gattungen geordnet ist" (Ingrid Müller). |
Rome: sons of Jacobus Feius Andreas for Joannes Casonus, 1661. 1 part only, of 8. Folio (349 x 225mm). Vignette arms of Pope Alexander VII on title. Contemporary Roman olive morocco gilt by Gregorio Andreoli for Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi (later Pope Clement IX), tooled to a post-fanfare design incorporating azured lozenges derived from the Rospigliosi arms and fan corner ornaments, shaped compartments with a sem! of tiny stars or flames, backstrip with central flower tool and arabesques, gilt edges. Slight wear at extremities, backstrip lightly faded and with minor repair at head, a few wormholes at tail, and slight wear in top compartment; lacking 2 index leaves, supplied in manuscript, 1 leaf torn with loss, toned. Previously named only for its main patron, the Rospigliosi bindery was identified by Jos! Ruysschaert as the bindery of Gregorio and Giovanni Andreoli. It was one of the most active and celebrated Roman shops in the 17th century and counted among its patrons not only Giulio Rospigliosi, for whom the present binding was commissioned, but several other popes, noble families, such as the Medici and Borghese, and royalty, such as GiulioOs close friend, Queen Christina of Sweden. An identically bound copy of another part of this work was formerly owned by Major J.R. Abbey (see sale, SothebyOs, 22 June 1965, lot 321, described as black morocco); it was reproduced in Hobson, French and Italian, no. 75, and listed as no. 40 in FootOs list of the work of this bindery in Davis Gift, I, pp.326-336. Even before acceding to the papal throne, Giulio Rospigliosi was a renowned patron of the arts and author of operatic libretti. His library remained largely intact until 1933, when 60 books were offered for sale by the Roman bookshop, Il Bibliofilio (cf. Hobson, op. cit.). Provenance: Giulio Rospigliosi (Pope 1667, binding); John Hely-Hutchinson (bookplate, sale SothebyOs 13 March 1956, lot 279, !180 to Foyle); Foyle sale July 2000, lot 171.
