CAMPANI, Giuseppe.
"This little book is of particular interest, not on the account of the silent clocks, but because it describes the accidental invention by the author of a pendulum as applied to a clock, and adduces some evidence on the question of Huygens' priority in the application of the pendulum. (.) In trying different arrangements of balance, Giuseppe lengthened the arms of the balance and attached by wax two leaden weights at their ends. While he was watching the action, the upper weight fell off, leaving only the lower weight and, to his astonishment, the clock continued to work, with the balance out of equilibrium; further he found the going extremely regular. He then showed the clock to his brother, who remarked that it was a great invention, discovered accidentally, applicable to all kinds of clocks, and that it was in fact the pendulum discovered by Galileo Galilei for measuring accurately the time in his celestial observations. (.) I feel not doubt that Giuseppe did discover the application of a pendulum to a clock, without knowledge of Huygens' recent work." (Baillie). Weil, Catalogue 29 n°23 : "of legendary rarity" (probably this copy). Baillie, Clocks and watches, An historical bibliography pp. 59-60.

SAINCTOT (Nicolas de);
Cérémonial de Mr de Sainctot, 1660-1684.
4088 - 5 tomes en 3 volumes in-folio manuscrits de (3)-242 ff. ; (1)-213-(2)-(2)-171 ff. Bibliothèque (1918) p. 100 ; Saffroy, (I, 15114) indique 7 volumes de 1660 à 1691. Bel exemplaire.

Charles Caris. Tales and Jests of Hugh Peters
      J. Sabin and Sons, New York, London - 63 p. Includes: illustrations, index. Published originally in 1660, "Tales and Jest of Hugh Peters" was published by Peter's enemies after his imprisonment in the Tower of London and subsequent execution. The point of this little volume was to sabotage Peters' reputation. Peters was a Puritan preacher associated with Oliver Cromwell who got caught up in the English Civil War and paid the ultimate price. This volume does not have a date on it, but an ad mentions the Buckingham Street office of Sabin and Sons, which was established in 1870. The best guess is that this was published about 1875. Spine and and corners are covered in blue leather with colorful boards and end pages. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Lactantius, Lucius Caecilius Firmianus (Lactantii, Lucii Coelii Firmiani)
Opera Quae Extant
Lugduni Batavorum (Leiden): Franciscum Hackium and Petrum Leffen, 1660 [32], 938pp, [80], full contemporary vellum, title and author in manuscript to head of spine. Vellum grubby, especially spine, internally some minor browning, but generally fairly clean. Engraved title. "A Christian apologist of the fourth century ... Lactantius was born a pagan and in his early life taught rhetoric in his native place ... He well merits the designation of the "Christian Cicero" bestowed on him by the humanists, for he exhibits many of the shortcomings as well as the graces of his master" (Catholic Encyclopaedia). The authorship of the poem De Phoenice (p. 904-923) formerly much disputed, is now generally ascribed to Lactantius;a the poem De Pascha (p. 924-934) is by Venantius Fortunatus; the Carmen de Passione Domini (p. 935-938) has been wrongly ascribed to Lactantius (Notes from the Open Library). Reprint. Full Vellum. Good. 8vo.

Andreas Cellarius
Situs Terrae Circulis Coelestibus Circundatae . . .
Striking old color celestial chart, showing a Ptolemaic model of the Universe, with the earth in its relation to the plane of the ecliptic,  from Cellarius' Harmonia Macrocosmica seu Atlas Universalis et Novus. The map is centered on Australia and the Pacific, and extends to the Indian Ocean in the West and California as an Island in the East.  The map also shows the zodiac band and horizon lines.  Andreas Cellarius Harmonia Macrocosmica (first published in 1660) is generally regarded as one of the most spectacular cosmographical atlases that was published in the second half of the seventeenth century. The atlas was published in 1660 and 1661 by the Amsterdam publisher Johannes Janssonius (1588-1664), as a cosmographical supplement to his Atlas Novus. Andreas Cellarius had already started working on this atlas before 1647 and intended it to be a historical introduction for a two-volume treatise on cosmography but the second part was never published.  The plates of his Harmonia Macrocosmica were reprinted (without the Latin commentary) in 1708 by the Amsterdam publishers Gerard Valk (1651-1726) and Peter Schenk (1660-1711).     (Amsterdam, 1703) [color: Hand Colored, size: 20 x 17 inches, condition: VG]

JONSTON, John.
Amsterdam, J.J. Schipper, 1660.. 6 parts in 1 vol. Folio. Contemporary vellum with six raised bands and title and author's name in manuscript on spine. With 4 richly engraved titles, and 250 full-page fine engraved plates, showing all kinds of animals, birds, fishes, reptiles, etc., including legendary ones. (10), 194; (8), 179, (1), 56; 181, (3); (8), 152; 39, (1) pp.. First and only, very important Dutch edition of a curious and comprehensive zoological work by John Jonston (1603-1675), richly illustrated with excellent copper-engravings. The work is divided into 4 main parts. The first part is devoted to the mammals and illustrated with numerous beautifully designed animals on 80 plates, including a unicorn. The second part treats the fishes with numerous illustrations of all kinds of fishes on 48 plates, one more than in the first Latin edition, depicting the sea unicorn, with an extra leaf of explanatory text added as well. To this part a sub-part on other sea-animals, like shell-fishes, polyps, etc. is added, with 20 plates. The third part is devoted to the birds, beautifully illustrated on 62 plates. The fourth and last main part then treats insects, including butterflies, with numerous specimen depicted on 28 plates, and to this part again a sub-part is added on snakes and dragons, illustrated on 12 plates. The Dutch edition was presented to the Japanese ruler Shogun Yoshimune, and it became the only source of knowledge of western zoology in Japan, until in 1750 Jonston was succeeded by an extensive twelve volume compilation, made by the Japanese physicians from a variety of Dutch sources. Even that compilation, according to Boxer, still heavily leaned on Johnston's magnum opus. Good copy.- (Small tear in title page, tear restored plate 29). Nissen, ZBI , 213; Nissen, Schöne Fischbücher, 82 (Latin ed. with 47 plates); Nissen, Illustr. Vogelbücher , 481 (Latin ed.); Anker, Bird Books , 234-235 (Latin ed.); Wood 1657 (idem); Dean III, 265; Boxer, Jan Compagnie in Japan , p. 50.

"ARETIN, Piétro Aretino, dit l';"
Capricciosi e piacevoli Ragionamenti. Nuova editione.
Willems, Les Elzevier, 858. "

Early Emblems of Divine Love)
Amoris Divini Emblemata (Emblems of Divine Love).
      - Antwerp: Christopher Plantin and Balthasar Moretus, based on the work of Otho van Veen (Vaenius, the Latinized version of the name), 1660. Second edition (first edition was 1615Ñthey sure waited a long time for the second edition; this 1660 edition is highly important and is found in institutions and major collections). 4to. All edges tinted red. Bound in full leather (relatively recentÑat least relative to 1660) with color leather paste label on spine with title and translation. 128 numbered pages plus added endpapers from the binding project. The pages are in clean, lovely condition (some faint marginal water staining on a few pages at the back) and the full page pictures are just stunning. There are sixty full-page engravings and an additional engraving on the title page. There is a long and rich history to emblem books that goes back mostly to the 16thÐ18th centuries and this is one of the best known examples of the genre. The text is in Latin, Dutch, French, and Spanish This particular set of emblems is organized around the relationship between the individual and their soul, both represented as children (hence the omnipresent cherubs throughout the images). We tend to think that we moderns have a unique perspective and wisdom about the big questions of the universe but in fact, that is hubris as many great thinkers and artists struggled with these same issues long ago. The engravings are beautiful with a delicate harmony reflective of van VeenÕs style which was certainly classically inspired. Otho van Veen (1556Ð1629) was the professor of P. P. Rubens and was highly regarded in his time, especially for works of an allegorical nature, and he had several highly prestigious appointments and positions during his lifetime. A striking book from another era that serves to underscore the continuity of lives and views of the universe. First Edition.

4to. pp. 127, [1]. engraved title vignette & 60 full-page engravings. woodcut ornaments & initials.text in Latin, Spanish, Dutch, & French. contemporary calf, gilt back (joints partly cracked, head of spine worn, scattered light foxing). Antwerp: ‘Ex Officina Plantiniana’, Balthasar Moretus, 1660. Second Edition (first: 1615) of this popular Dutch emblem book on divine love. The work is dedicated to the Infanta Isabella of Spain, at whose suggestion the emblems were composed. Dutch artist Van Veen studied for seven years under Federigo Zuccari at Rome. Settling in Antwerp in 1593, he began painting for the churches and public buildings. For several years, from 1596 to 1600, he numbered Rubens among his pupils. His work attracted the admiration and patronage of the Archduke Albert, who succeeded the Prince of Parma in the government of the Low Countries. Lactantius, Lucius Caecilius Firmianus (Lactantii, Lucii Coelii Firmiani)
Opera Quae Extant
Franciscum Hackium and Petrum Leffen, Lugduni Batavorum (Leiden) 1660 - [32], 938pp, [80], full contemporary vellum, title and author in manuscript to head of spine. Vellum grubby, especially spine, internally some minor browning, but generally fairly clean. Engraved title. "A Christian apologist of the fourth century . Lactantius was born a pagan and in his early life taught rhetoric in his native place . 935-938) has been wrongly ascribed to Lactantius (Notes from the Open Library) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Mark S. Dawson
Gentility and the Comic Theatre of Late Stuart London
Cambridge University Press. Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. Where Adam delved and Eve span Who was then the gentleman? Mark Dawson's approach to this riddle is not to study the lives of those said to belong to early modern England's gentry. He suggests we remain skeptical of all answers to this question and consider what was at stake whenever it was posed. We should conceive of gentility as a mutable process of social delineation. Gentility was a matter of power and language; cultural definition and social domination. Neither consistently defined nor applied to particular social groups, gentility was about identifying society's elite. The book examines how gentility was portrayed through plays at London's theatres (1660? ? ? 1725). Employing a rich assembly of sources, comedies with their cits and fops, periodicals, correspondence of theatre patrons and polemic from its detractors, Dawson revises several of social history's conclusions about the gentry and offers new interpretations to students of late Stuart drama. (10), 194; (8), 179, (1), 56; 181, (3); (8), 152; 39, (1) pp.
Paris:: Antoine Bertier. 1660. hardcover. 2. Large 4to. [20], 628, [26] pp. Engraved frontis., red and black title-page with large printer!s device. Contemporary full brown mottled calf, raised bands, gilt-stamped spine panels and title; front hinge beginning to split, cords holding firm, extremities scratched, corners showing. Contemporary ink ownership marks on title-page. Very good. . FIRST EDITION. This history of Cardinal Richelieu is by the French historian Antoine Aubery. The son of a Parisian landlord, Aubery became a lawyer in the French Parliament. Very scholarly, he was one of the official writers and apologists to the Court of France in the 18th century. Aubery was the author of many historical works, including Histoire generale des cadinaux (1642) and Memoires pour servir a l!histoire du cardinal duc de Richelieu (1660). The fine, large (305 x 218 mm) engraved frontispiece of Richelieu was executed by Aegid [Giles] Rousselet (1610-1686). The Cardinal de Richelieu was often known by the title of the King!s !Chief Minister! or !First Minister!. As a result, he is sometimes considered to be the world!s first Prime Minister, in the modern sense of the term. He sought to consolidate royal power and crush domestic factions. By restraining the power of the nobility, he transformed France into a strong, centralized state. His chief foreign policy objective was to check the power of the Austro-Spanish Habsburg dynasty. Although he was a cardinal, he did not hesitate to make alliances with Protestant rulers in attempting to achieve this goal. His tenure was marked by the Thirty Years! War that engulfed Europe. Richelieu was also famous for his patronage of the arts; most notably, he founded the Academie Francaise, the learned society responsible for matters pertaining to the French language. Richelieu is also known by the sobriquet l!Eminence rouge (!the Red Eminence!), from the red shade of a cardinal!s vestments and the style !eminence! as a cardinal. CAMPANI, Giuseppe.
"This little book is of particular interest, not on the account of the silent clocks, but because it describes the accidental invention by the author of a pendulum as applied to a clock, and adduces some evidence on the question of Huygens' priority in the application of the pendulum. (...) In trying different arrangements of balance, Giuseppe lenghtened the arms of the balance and attached by wax two leaden weignts at their ends. While he was watching the action, the upper weight fell off, leaving only the lower weight and, to his astonishment, the clock containued to work, with the balance out of equilibrium; further he found the going extremely regular. He then showed the clock to his brother, who remarked that it was a great invention, discovered accidentally, applicable to all kinds of clocks, and that it was in fact the pendulum discovered by Galileo Galilei for measuring accurately the time in his celestial observations. (...) I feel not doubt that Giuseppe did discover the application of a pendulum to a clock, without knowledge of Huygens' recent work." (Baillie). Weil, Catalogue 29 n°23 : "of legendary rarity" (probably this copy). Baillie, Clocks and watches, An historical bibliography pp. 59-60. Josef Köstlbauer: Quellenautopsie "Martin Meyer (1659)", in: Europabegriffe und Europavorstellungen im 17. Jahrhundert. Interneteintrag].

Baxter, Richard (1615-1691)
TREATISE ON SELF-DENYALL.
London Printed for Robert White, for Nevil Simmons Bookseller in Kederminster 1660, First Edition Hardcover Poor condition [lxviii], 339 pages of text. Full leather binding in poor condition: Inexpertly rebacked, with cracked and peeling to boards with several pieces of leather lacking. The first 28 pages (14 leaves) of the un-numbered preliminary section are damaged at the top edge with loss. About 15% of the title page is lacking, and the percentage reduces with each page; it appears to be some sort of gouging, or it could be old vermin damage. With the exception of one page with an illegible name written in the margin, the remainder of the text is quite clean and attractive.

Cioranescu, XVII, 42386.
