COLBERT, Nicolas, abbé.
LAS à un prélat.
|
Pontoise, 8 juillet 1660. In-4, 4 pages.

Merian, Matthaeus (1593-1650) And
Topographia Galliae; Dat Ist Een Algemeene En Naeukeurige Lant En Plaets-Beschrijvinghe Van Het Machtige Koninckrijk Vranckryck
|
. Amsterdam: Joost Broersz, Caspar Merian, 1660-1661-1662-1663. 4 volumes, small folio. (12 3/8 x 8 inches). Engraved titles and 325 plates and maps (some folding, some double-page) by Matthaeus Merian and others. Contemporary speckled calf, covers with the gilt-blocked armorial of Ralph Sneyd, expertly rebacked to style, spines with raised bands in 7 compartments richly tooled in gilt, red morocco lettering pieces in the second comparment. A fine Dutch-language edition of the most comprehensive illustrated guide to seventeenth century France. Merian (1593-1650), the father of engraver Matthäus the younger, and the grandfather of the painter, engraver and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian, was born in Basel Switzerland. After a period when he visited and lived in Nancy (France), Paris and Stuttgart, and after working for Theodore de Bry for a while, he married in 1618 and settled in Frankfurt. From here he issued a great many engravings including various topographical series accompanied by text by Martin Zeiler, which together form an invaluable record of Europe during the first half of the sixteenth century. The present work, published in Amsterdam at the time of and shortly after Merian's death, is a Dutch-language version of Zeiler and Merian's Topographia Galliae, oder Beschreibung und Contrafaitung der vornehmbsten und bekantisten Oerter in...Frankreich. first published in Frankfurt between 1655 and 1661. The work, containing over 300 plates, is the most comprehensive illustrated guide to the cities and structures of seventeenth century France. The finely engraved pictures are of great importance, as they preserve many details of buildings, roadways, and cities that no longer exist or have been significantly altered. Cf Brunet V, 1530; cf. C. Schuchhard Die Zeiller-Merianschen Topographien bibliographisch beschrieben (Hamburg: 1960).

KIRCHER, Athanasius
Iter Extaticum Coeleste...hac secundâ editione Praelusionibus & Scholiis illustratum...a P. Gaspare Schotto...Accessit...Iter Exstaticum Terrestre, & Synopsis Mundi Subterranei
|
Added engraved title, finely engraved arms on verso of printed title, & 12 engraved plates. 12 p.l. (incl. added title), 689, [18] pp. Thick 4to, cont. sheep-backed speckled boards (minor foxing), spine richly gilt. Wurzburg: Heirs of J.A. & W.J. Endter, 1660.pSecond edition, enlarged and edited by the author's friend and disciple Gaspar Schott, of Kircher's only work devoted entirely to astronomy; the first edition was published in 1656 with the title Itinerarium exstaticum. "Itinerarium exstaticum is one of Kircher's most curious works. He wrote the treatise in the form of a narrative in which a certain Theodidactus -- Kircher himself -- is caught up in a dream-vision or an ecstatic journey and is guided through the heavens by a spirit named Cosmiel...In the first dialogue, Kircher recounts the journey to the moon, which he finds scarred with mountains and craters, contrary to the Aristotelian view. He flies on to Venus, which he discovers is made of the four elements, and so on to each of the other planets and through the region of the fixed stars. The sun itself has blemishes, Kircher proclaims. He himself had seen sunspots through a telescope several years earlier... "Kircher rejected the Aristotelian and Ptolemaic cosmologies in favor of that of Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), who argued that the sun orbits the earth and is in turn orbited by the planets and the fixed stars. The Tychonian system was adopted by most of Kircher's fellow Jesuits, since it allowed them to maintain geocentric orthodoxy while espousing, at least in part, the new, more scientific heliocentricity advocated by the Copernicans. Kircher broaches this subject more directly in the second dialogue, where he deals with the creations of the earth, its position in the universe, its various characteristics and limitations, and finally, its eventual destruction. To support his views Kircher cites scriptural and scientific authorities in his conclusion. Among the latter are the astronomer Johannes Hevelius, the influential astronomer and meteorologist Gottfried Wendelin, Galileo, and other less-orthodox scientists of his day. This scientific, religious, and semi-mystical work testifies to Kircher's dubious poise at the juncture of two ages."-Merrill, Athanasius Kircher, pp. 26-27. Fine copy. Engraved armorial stamp of "Bibliotheca Raschkiana" on title. Merrill, Athanasius Kircher, 12.. First Edition. Hard cover.

[MUSÉE DU LOUVRE (PARIS). POUSSIN,

L'Esté. 48 x 62 cm, 1st state (W. 175). L'Automne. 47.5 x 62 cm, 1st state (W. 176). L'Hiver. 48 x 62 cm, 1st state (W. 177). Inscription varies. Text in French and Latin. Small blind embossed stamps in lower margin. Pencilled numbers in margin; paper somewhat dusty; very light spotting in gutter of Le Printemps and on top edge and gutter of L'Esté; small ink blot outside print mark on one plate; but images clean and sharp. Wildenstein, Georges: "Les Graveurs de Poussin au XVIIe Siècle", Paris 1957, 174-177. The remarkable collection of engravings known as the Cabinet du Roi originated with Louis XIV's minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683), who commissioned engravers to create designs for the King's tapestries and furniture. Colbert set up a workshop and repository called the Chalcographie du Louvre to employ engravers and printers, and to conserve the copperplates produced for the engravings. As early as 1662, engravings were made to record special celebrations given by the King at Versailles. They were well-received, and by an order in council in 1667, an enormous artistic endeavour was undertaken to record the King's collections of paintings, sculpture, and coins, as well plans for gardens and buildings, and the interior decoration of the royal residences. Beginning in 1670, these engravings were published in volumes and presented as gifts to visiting dignitaries. To offset the cost of production, Colbert offered restrikes of them for sale, and in 1727, the first complete set of the Cabinet du Roi engravings was published in 23 volumes. Nicolas Poussin was born and educated in Normandy, and at the age of 18 left for the art studios of Paris. Inspired by the Italian masters, he eventually went to Rome, where patrons such as Cardinal Francesco Barberini encouraged him to produce a range of canvases with classical and biblical themes. He returned to Paris under Louis XIII and painted large tableaux for the royal homes, patterns for Gobelins tapestries and many works for the Louvre. The lion's share of engravings made for the Tableaux volume of the Cabinet du Roi series were from Poussin's paintings, reproduced by prominent engravers Audran, Baudet, Pesne, Rousselet and Claudine Stella, among others. This set, in the 1st state, according to Wildenstein, is scarce.

REYNOLDS, Edward & others]
A seasonable exhortation of sundry ministers in London to the people of their respective congregations.
|
London, printed by E.M. for Samuel Gellibrand a the golden Ball in Pauls Church-yard; and Robert Gibbs at the golden Ball in Chancery Lane. 1660 - 4to., title printed within a typographical border, (4) + 24pp., minor soiling a staining in several leaves, but a good copy preserved in modern wrappers with printed title label on upper cover. First edition. Wing R.1276. After the death of Oliver Cromwell (Sept. 1658), Reynolds was recognised as the leader of the moderate presbyterian divines or 'reconcilers'. He and other presbyterians sought an accommodation with Richard Cromwell, and in October 1658, on the behalf of himself and other London presbyterian ministers, delivered an oral address to the new Protector. He preached at the opening session of Parliament in 1659, and throughout 1659 and 1660 his sermons to Parliament and London notables became increasingly pointed about the need for peace, unity, and moderation, codes for the restoration of the monarchy and accommodation with episcopalians. He was the prime mover behind A seasonable exhortation in January 1660, which condemned sectaries and urged an understanding with Anglicans. Throughout the summer and autumn of 1660 Reynolds continued to push for a moderate episcopacy acceptable to presbyterians and Anglicans, and he helped to draft the King's Worcester House declaration that October. He was about then made Bishop of Norwich. [Ian Atherton in ODNB]. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

He also made the valid observation that the mood of the obsessional is fundamentally sad even though he does not appear so, because an obsessive-compulsive neurosis is a means of warding off expected or dreaded evil or punishment. In the account of William Oseney [quoted later], the illness began with overscrupulosity in religious matters, sometimes an early symptom of impending mental breakdown with which priests are more familiar than psychiatrists. AN EXACT AND MOST IMPARTIAL ACCOMPT OF THE INDICTMENT, ARRAIGNMENT, TRIAL,AND JUDGMENT (ACCORDING TO LAW) OF TWENTY NINE REGICIDES, THE MURTHERERSOF HIS LATE SACRED MAJESTY OF MOST GLORIOUS MEMORY...
|
London: Printed for Andrew Crook...and Edward Powel, 1660. [2],287pp. [actually 297pp.]. Lacks pp. 149-152. Turn-of-the-century gray boards, paper spine label. Light wear to edges and joints. Bookplate on front pastedown. Minor old paper repairs to title page and last leaf. Generally very good internally, with very little tanning or foxing and no trimmed text. This important compilation of court records, etc., relating to the regicide of Charles I was published immediately following the presentation of the cases at the beginning of the Restoration. Aside from their obvious importance to English monarchical and legal history, the regicide trials have particular significance to New Haven history since three of the "murtherers" fled to New Haven following the restoration of Charles II, becoming namesakes of the three central avenues: John Dixwell, Edward Whalley, and William Goffe.

Collection of the militant Roman Catholic writings by the Jesuit priest Cornelius Hazart (1617-1688), born at Oudenaarde and a popular preacher at Antwerp. All the present pamphlets are polemical, devoted to defend and explain questions rejected by the Dutch Protestants, like the devotion of Saints, relics and pilgrimage to Saints, the interpretation of the Last Supper, etc. They were mainly intended for the Jesuit Mission into the Northern Dutch Republic. Special attention was given to the Southern Provinces, Dutch Brabant and Limburg, which were at the time more or less second-grade provinces within the Dutch Republic, and in these provinces Roman Catholicismwas still strong among the common people. Thus the polemics of the third and fourth work were addressed to Schuler, and Van Renesse, both ministers of the Protestant Church at Breda. Written in the vernacular and intended for the general public these pamphlets were rather popular. Good copy, with the bookplates of the Jesuit College at Culemborg, and of Jean Grand Jean Perrenod Comtesse.- (Ms. index on first free endpaper). English Science: Bacon to Newton
|
Cambridge University Press. Seventeenth-century England witnessed an unprecedented flourishing of natural philosophy, inspired by Francis Bacon's call for a new science based on observation and experiment, to be carried out in collective research projects, whose findings would be communicated in clear language. This anthology documents the effect of Bacon's ideas in the remarkably fruitful period following 1660. It includes his sketch of a scientific research institute in the New Atlantis (1627), which inspired the founding of the Royal Society in 1662, as acknowledged by Thomas Sprat in its History, excerpted here. Bacon's plea for an appropriate language for science also affected the Royal Society, as Sprat records, and gave birth to a number of schemes for man-made artificial languages, represented here by John Wilkins's Essay Towards a Real Character and a Philosophical Language (1668). This reader gives full coverage to the dramatic understanding of nature achieved through experiments using newly developed scientific instruments: Robert Boyle's investigation of air pressure; Hooke and Henry Power's mastery of the microscope; and Isaac Newton's use of the prism to show that light is not homogeneous but composed of many different colours. The selections are accompanied by a general introduction, extensive notes, contemporary illustrations, a glossary of obsolete and technical terms and an updated bibliography. ISBN10: 0521316839.

HORTENSIUS, L.
Dutch edition of the famous description of the rebellion of the Mennonites Oproeren der wederdoperen; geschiet tot Amsterdam, Munster, en in Groeningerlandt.
|
Amsterdam, Samuel Imbrechts, 1660.. Contemporary vellum. With engraved illustration on title, and 16 full-page engraved plates in text, one repeated. 168, 11 (1) pp.. Dutch edition of the famous description of the rebellion of the Mennonites by Lambertus Hortensius from Montfoort (1500-1574), rector of the Latin school at Naarden. First edition with a separate part on the mennonites in Groningen, the northern part of the Low Countries Oproer in Groeningerlandt . First published in Latin, under the title Tumultum anabaptistarum liber unus , at Basel in 1548, the book presents, after a short survey of the origins of the Anabaptist movement, a detailed account of the events in Munster, written in a fluent and skillful style, without divisions into chapters. The result is a graphic and impressive description, which gave the book its great fame and longliving influence. The author had dedicated the book to the burgomasters and council of Amsterdam, praising them for their wisdom and vigorousness in mastering the Anabaptist attempt at a coup d'etat. The author compared their wisdom to the hesitancy and foolishness of the government of Munster. The plates vividly show the excentric behaviour of the Mennonites and their final defeat and execution. The one repeated plate must have been a cancel, but the replacement is not present here. The paintings after which the engravings were made were burned in 1652.signed I.M.P. Good copy.- (Few wormholes). Cf. Simoni H 186 (first Dutch ed. 1614); Knuttel, Ned. Bibliogr. Kerkgeschiedenis , p. 150-151; Mennonite Encyclopedia II, p. 816; Boekenoogen, p. 53 (not this ed.).

ARISTOTELES -
I. Commentarius in opera moralia Aristotelis. II. Commentarii in opera Ar(istote)lis physica.

Howell, James
Lexicon Tetraglotton, an English-French-Italian-Spanish Dictionary? With Another Volume of the Choicest Proverbs?
|
printed by J.G. for Samuel Thomson, 1660-[59]. First edition, folio, engraved frontispiece after W. Faithorn, title printed in red and black, text primarily in triple column; entry words in English throughout; a pleasing copy in full contemporary calf, unrestored; gilt spine, red morocco label; with the half-title (also printed in red and black); some cracking of joints at the extremities, the whole a bit scuffed and rubbed, sections of the text significantly spotted, but generally a good, sound copy. In addition to the proverbs, the book contains prefatory poems on language, a 6-p. note "To the tru philologer, " and many separate sections at the back giving terminology in a number of specific jargons: i.e. anatomy, horsemanship, hunting and venery, military, nautical, architecture and "household stuff", among others. Howell (? 1594-1666) was an accomplished linguist and historiographer to Charles II (see DNB for a long description of his sometimes checkered career). Besides being one of the first Englishmen to earn a livelihood out of literature, he possessed a rare mastery of the modern languages, including his native Welsh. In addition to this polyglot, Howell issued a revised edition of Cotgrave's French-English Dictionary in 1650; A New English Grammar for Foreigners (1662); and a posthumously published French grammar (1673). Alston II, 110 (noting 2 other issues of the same year); Wing H3088.

Attractively rebound in later 20th century calf-backed marbled boards with morocco spine label and raised spine bands. Lacks the last leaf of the table-of-contents at the rear, else an attractive copy in a pleasant modern binding. Uncommon. Translated into English in 1665 as The Art How to Know Men. Wellcome II, p. 419; Caillet 2728. 10.0 ounces = 285 grams. 5.9 x 3.6 x 1.0 inches = 14.8 x 9 x 2.5cm. An important 17th century French work on character. Both this and La Chambre's Les caracteres des passions (Amsterdam: 1658-63) are significant period contributions to psychology. Writing in an age when science and pseudoscience still weren't separate, La Chambre wrote works on the passions, chiromancy, light and rainbows, and animal rationality. La Chambre was physician to Chancellor Seguier, as well as to Louis XIII & Louis XIV. He was one of the early members of the French Academy in 1635, and later in 1666 one of the first members of the Academy of Sciences. He had been a protoge of Cardinal Richelieu, who approved the fact that as early as 1634 he chose to publish in French rather than Latin. .

Stahl, Georg Ernst: =
VII, pp. 254-260; Dict. hist. IV, pp. 204-213; Lasegue, in Conferences histor. faites a la Fac. de med. de Paris 1865: Hoffniann et Stahl, p. 33; auch in Union med. 1865, p.38,41; Poggendorff, II, p. 979.

*Dekkers p.186, 2 & 3. May, Robert
The Accomplisht / Accomplished Cook Or the Art and Mystery of Cookery [ London: Printed for Obadiah Blagrave, 1685, Restoration Cookery ]
|
Obadiah Blagrave 1665 / 1685 / Facsimile Bound Reprint Edition. C: Cookbook, Recipes, Kitchen. Facsimile Bound Reprint Edition. 509 pages. Paperback: soft cover edition in good or better condition, some slight wear to edges, as normal for age of book. Overall good copy of this title. Excellent read. A good book to enjoy and keep on hand. Or would make a great gift for the fan / reader in your life. Editorial Book Description: This is a facsimile edition of the masterpiece of Restoration cookery by Robert May, first published in 1660-but this is a reproduction of the last revision made in the author's lifetime. It was the most important cookery book of its time: straddling the period of the Civil War and Restoration, when English cookery was for the first time influenced by the high cooking of the French court and aristocracy. Robert May was a professional cook (most recipe books of the period were from the pens of amateurs, or women, or reproduced household collections). He had trained in Paris. He had worked for a succession of noble families, mostly (like him) of the Catholic faith. As well as a matchless collection of recipes, the original book also contained a memoir of the author. There is a modern introduction which offers new facts about May's life and work; and there is a useful glossary of words, terms and materials. This book was described by Elizabeth David as 'a most beautiful piece of cookery literature'. The modern writer Frances Bissell repeatedly claims that it is her 'favourite cookery book of all time'. John Lanchester wrote of the original hardback edition (published in 1994) that it was 'the oddball food book of the year'.
