THE EIGHTEEN LOHAN RUBBINGS OF CHINESE BUDDHIST TEMPLES.
SUITE OF EIGHTEEN RUBBINGS OF CHINESE BUDDHIST LOHANS.
STUNNING RUBBINS OF THE FAMOUS BUDDHIST LOHANS China n.d. Green brocade silk cloth, accordion folded, tall tall format, 22 x 38.5 cm., illustrating in b.w. the eighte- en Lohan on 6 double-page plates, no text, a pristine, clean & bright copy, mounted Chinese style on hand-made paper.RARE A very lovely album, consisting of superb and very pristine rubbings of Lohans or Buddhist arhats. These saints have been around since the T'ang dynasty [618-905 A.D.]. These stone carvings were likely done in the late Ming period [1368-1644], of stone carvings. The work depicts each of the Eighteen Lohans ["pindola"] or "The old man [men] of the Mountain."], he is attended by an acolyte and a mountain demon. Pindola was also one of the four "Great Disciples" of the Buddha, left on earth to propagate Buddhism after the Buddha's death. All four were to remainin existance to spre- ad the Budhist gospel, and not to experience Nirvana, until Buddha returned to earth in the form of Maitreya. The second rubbing shows two monks seated together, and is of the 17th Louhan ["Pu Tai"] upper right, and the 18th Louhan ["Upasaka Dharmatala"] seated below and to the left. The concept of Louhans came originally to China via Tibet, and earlier dep- ictions include only 16. The 17th & 18th Louhans illustrated in this series of rubbings are later Chinese creations. This is probably a complete set of the Louhans at the time of the stone carving. The first 12 by name are: Ka-no-ka-Fa-tso; Pin-tu-lo-Po-lo-to-she; Su-p'in-t'e; Ka-no-ka-Po-li-tou-she; Po-t'e-lo; No-ku-lo; Fa-she-lo-fuh-to-lo; Ka-li-ka; Pan-t'o- kan; Shu-po-ka; Na-ka-si-na. Lo-hu-lo; Fa-na-p'o-ssu; Yin- kie;t'e; Chu-ch'a [t'a]-Pan-t'o-ka; & A-shih-to. Each sheet has been nicely mounted with ca. 4.5 cm. top and bottom margins, and ca. 5 cm. on the sides. The actual rubbing is 32.5 x 29 cm and is with usual black background with white characters and images, and is center-folded. The last page is blank. No colophon, not text whatsoever. A lovely work, full of charm and innocence. The art work is superbly carved in stone, then a rubbing was made using wet black Sumi-type ink which was then painted on the stone, while the paper was adheared to the wet sone. Then rubs on the back side with dry grass or other soft object. Not an easy task even under the best circumstances, but done with great skill, perfectly copying the stone tablets. By now, its easy to assume that these tablets have already perished or otherwise been disfi- gured or removed from its original site. Useful and excel- lent references exist on these eighteen Lohan: T. Watters: THE EIGHTEEN LOHAN OF CHINESE BUDDHIST TEMPLES. W. Fong: THE LOHANS AND A BRIDGE TO HEAVEN. LA BIGNE, MARGUERIN
Maxima bibliotheca veterum patrum, et antiquorum scriptorum ecclesiasticorum. [28 volumes]
Anissonii - Folio. Newly rebound in black cloth with morocco labels on spines. Small library stamps on title-pages, a few spots of foxing, but overall in very good condition. A monumental work in patrology, La Bigne compiled the first extensive collection of ancient and early medieval ecclesiastical authors. Although Migne's early 19th century Patrologia Latina et Graeca was more vast, La Bigne's work is more carefully edited and more accurate. This edition of La Bigne's opus, the last printed, was completed under the Parisian doctor of theology, Philippe Despont, although a number of scholars since the time of La Bigne had contributed to it. This edition supercedes the two previous editions (1644 and 1654), which were entitled Magna Bibliotheca and which were comprised of only 17 volumes. This last edition includes more than 100 additional authors and numerous works not included in the two earlier editions. Complete in 27 volumes, plus the extensive index, volume 28, which was edited by the Augustinian scholar, Simeon a Sancta Cruce, and printed in 1707 in Genova by Antonius Scionicus.

(i.e. 96). 15ff. (1f.blanc). 2). 8ff. 188pp. (i.e. 190). 1f.

Bel exemplaire. Mario Praz, Studies in Seventeenth-Century Imagery, I, 473. - John Landwehr, French, italian, spanish and portuguese books of devices and emblems, 634. Plazzoni, Francesco
De Partibus Generationi Inservientibus...
. 184pp. 12mo, cont. calf (rubbed). Leyden: David Lopes de Haro, 1644. BOUND WITH: NYMMAN, Gregory. Dissertatio de Vita Foetus in Utero. 87pp. Leyden: David Lopes de Haro, 1644. First combined edition of 3 rare works on generation. Plazzoni's work described the organs of human generation, and is notable for its early reference to perineal tears and rectovaginal fistulae, as well as its account of the vulvovaginal ducts, of which Bartholin was apparently unaware in his classic treatment of them. The Nymann work marks the transition from theological to scientific embryology in the 17th century, and is continuously paginated with Adrian Spigel's Epistola de Incerto Tempore Partus (pp. 63-87), which in this copy is slightly wormed in margins. Spigel is best known as the author of the text of the finest anatomical atlas of the century, and for his first extensive account of malaria.

Paris: E Typographia Regia, 1644. Folio. 179 pp. Copperplate device to title-page and to head- and tailpieces. A handsome typographic edition of the satires of Juvenalis and Persius, printed very much in the style of Bodoni. Spine with six raised bands and red morocco title label, gilt lettered. Boards show some chipping at edges, as expected, though very few blemishes overall. QUARTERMASTER’S MAP, The.]
The kingdome of England & principality of Wales, exactly described whith every sheere, & the small townes in every one of them, in six mappes, portable for every mans pocket . . . Usefull for all comanders for quarteringe of souldiers, & all sorts of persons, that would be informed, where the armies be; never so commodiously drawne before this. 1644. Described by one that travailed throughout the whole kingdome, for its purpose.
[London], sold by Thomas Jenner, 1644. - Tall 8vo (220 x 85 mm), with an engraved title and six double-page folding engraved maps (hand-coloured in outline); contemporary calf, rebacked and resewn; metal clasps. Usually known as the Quartermaster’s Map, this map – pocket-sized when folded –was based on Christopher Saxton’s large wall map of 1583. Etched for the most part by Wenceslaus Hollar, it was first published in 1644, during the English Civil War, by Thomas Jenner, a printseller with strong puritan and parliamentarian sympathies: Jenner’s production, especially after 1640, ‘had a strong political bias; and his earliest cartographic works were plainly designed for the use of the armies. The need for maps in military operations doubtless accounts . . . for his commissioning of Hollar to etch a copy of Saxton’s wall-map of England and Wales, the so-called Quartermaster’s Map (1644)’ (Skelton, County atlases of the British Isles p. 235).The Quatermaster’s Map proved useful and popular for many years after its first appearance during the Civil War. ‘The wartime value of such a volume is clear, but the artist certainly had a wider purpose than military in reducing his maps to a size that would be "Portable for every man’s pocket". Despite its hazards, travel in these uneasy mid-decades of the seventeenth century was considerable, as volumes of memoirs and letters such as those of Lady Fanshawe, John Evelyn, and Dorothy Osborne Temple show. Maps of the usual size were consigned to a library, but these could accompany the traveler and would, in an age before specific guidebooks or well-marked roads, be especially welcome’ (Van Eerde p. 31). Pepys refers to the Quatermaster’s Map in his Diary for 9 June 1667: "My Lord Barkeley wanting some maps, and Sir W. Coventry recommending the six maps of England that are bound up for the pocket, I did offer to present my Lord with them, which he accepted’ (quoted by Penington, p. xliv). It was re-issued on several occasions (with various alterations, such as the addition of roads), including by Jenner in 1671, by John Garrett in 1688 and by John Rocque in 1752.BM Maps V 437; Pennington 652–657; Shirley, Early printed maps of the British Isles 537; Van Eerde, Wenceslaus Hollar pp. 30–1; Wing H2447. The compactness of the format meant that much of the sea-surface was omitted, including the Isle of Man, part of the Lincolnshire coast at Mablethorpe, and Land’s End. Extensions showing these features were printed and are occasionally found attached to the relevant sheet, as, for example, Land’s End in the present copy.

The illustrations of these plants have been largely overlooked in botanical history, because of their incidental presence in a work which might not be expected to contain anything of the sort. Tiree des Recherches & des Figures de Cesar Ripa, moralisees par I. Baudoin.
Woodcut initials, headpieces and tailpieces, some rather large and elegant. (12 ll.), 456 [i.e. 458; numbers 407–8 repeated on leaves Ll 6 and Mm1]. Pp. (pp. 391–[392, blank] bound before 389–390). The numbered pages in two columns. Folio, nineteenth–century speckled calf (very minor wear), spine gilt with raised bands in six compartments, black leather lettering piece, gilt letter, marbled endleaves, textblock edges rouged. Hole on 2N4 affecting several letters on each side. Three rectangular pieces (1 x 5.9 cm., 1.2 x 8 cm., and 1.3 x 5.4 cm.) cut from title page and repaired, apparently to remove old signatures; lower third of title page backed. Otherwise a very good to fine copy; overall a good copy. FIRST EDITION of this fundamental work on the restoration of Portuguese independence. The work was associated with the Jesuits, and was ordered suppressed by the Marques de Pombal after the expulsion of the Jesuit Order from Portugal. The engraving, signed by Cristiano Lobo, is of a Renaissance–style architectural frontispiece with broken pediment supported on each side by double Corinthian columns. In the center of the architecture is an oval cartouche with a three–quarter–length portrait of D. João IV (labeled within a frame "JOANNES IIII D.G. REX PORTVGALIÆ ET ALGARBIORVM ÆTATIS SVÆ XXXX 1644"). The ruler is shown standing in three–quarter view, wearing a suit of armor; his right hand rests on a table and clutches a baton; his helmet is placed on the same table. Directly below the portrait, in an imitation of bas–relief, is a scene of the Portuguese army facing that of Spain. Above the portrait, two putti recline on the broken pediment while holding the Portuguese royal arms topped by a royal crown and the Bragança dragon. At left and right of the portrait are the figures Mars and Minerva, who stand on pedestals bearing emblems: under Mars, one serpent bites the tail of another with the motto "Depositis novvs exvviis", while Minerva's pedestal depicts a chain with the motto "Arcerant vincula palmas". REINERUS NEUHUSIUS
POEMATA JUVENILIA LIBRI III AMSTERDAM IANSONIUM 1644
In 16 antico (14,2 x 8,5 x 2,5), tutta pergamena coeva calligrafata al dorso, nervetti, pag. (6) 22, 452 (6). Dedicatio all'"Illustribus ac Praepotentibus West-Frisiae, ordinibus nobilissimis ac Magnificis ALCMARIAE consulibusa". Testo interamente in lingua latina. Ottimo stato. Reinerus Neuhusius (Leeuwarden 13.5.1608 -Alkmaar begr.

Tomasini (Giacomo Filippo) :

THEOPHRASTUS.
De Historia Plantarum Libri Decem, Graece & Latine. In quibus Textum Graecum variis Lectionibus, emendationibus, hiulcorum supplementis: Latinam Gazae versionem nova interpretatione ad margines: totum Opus absolutissimis cum Notis tum Commentariis: item rariorum Plantarum iconibus illustravit.
Finely engraved title-page (a trifle shaved at outer edge) & 675 woodcuts in the text. 10 p.l. (incl. engr. title), 1187 (i.e. 1185), [87] pp. Folio, cont. Dutch vellum over boards (head of spine somewhat worn, foot of spine with a tear repaired), panelled in blind, central arabesque in blind to each cover, remains of green silk ties. Amsterdam: H. Laurentius, 1644. First edition to be edited by Joannes Bodaeus à Stapel; it “is one of the best and most thoughtfully prepared of all the editions of Theophrastos.”–Hunt 240. H.H. Bartlett wrote in his Fifty-five Rare Books (Ann Arbor: 1949) of this edition: “It is interesting not only because of the brilliance of the editing, but, curiously enough, to the American botanist as well, for involving in the discussion certain species from Virginia, other parts of the New World, and Asia. The illustrations of these plants have been largely overlooked in botanical history, because of their incidental presence in a work which might not be expected to contain anything of the sort. Some were merely borrowed from l’Escluse or de Lobel, but others seem to be original in this work.” A fine and crisp copy. ❧ D.S.B., XIII, pp. 328-334. See Garrison-Morton 1783.

"One of the most important sources of knowledge of events in Europe between 1235 and 1259" (Encyclopaedia Britannica).

Massa e Landi, 1644., Firenze, - In 4°; 1 c., pagg. 243, 151 (mal num.), vignette schematiche incise in legno n.t. Bell'esemplare. Riccardi II, 543. PMM 145. D.S.B. XIII, pp. 434-37: "The work [.] had intrinsic value and [.] diffused the geometry of Cavalieri [.]. In De motu gravium he continued the study of the parabolic motion of projectiles, begun by Galileo [.]. As Torricelli acquired increasing familiarity with the method of indivisibles, he reached the point of surpassing the master - as Cavalieri himself said [.]. The treatise also refers to the movement of water in a paragraph so important that Ernst Mach proclaimed Torricelli the founder of hydrodynamics [.]. He deduced the theorem that bears his name".       Antwerp, Balthasar Moretus, 1644 Folio (405 x 255 mm), pp [xxxvi] 1492 [60, index], with a beautifully handcoloured engraved title, 2 large handcoloured initials, title and initials illuminated in gold, and 1470 finely handcoloured woodcuts; a fine copy in contemporary richly gilt decorated calf binding by Albertus Magnus, upper and lower covers elaborately tooled, spine gilt in 8 compartments with red gilt morocco title-piece, monogram of Michiel van der Grijp on spine and covers, all edges gilt, a few minor repairs. £90,000 An extraordinary copy of the most important herbal in the Dutch language, bound by the most famous Dutch bookbinder of the seventeenth century for Michiel van der Grijp, a wealthy Amsterdam nobleman. Albertus Magnus (1642-1689) of Amsterdam is considered one of the finest bookbinders of the seventeenth century. The present copy was studied at great length by specialists of the Royal Library at The Hague. By comparing the tools used for this copy with other Albertus Magnus bindings it can be ascribed to Magnus with certainty. Albertus Magnus was one of the first binders to introduce and develop a Dutch variant of the French style ëà petits fersí. The present binding is very similar to the famous wedding bible Albertus Magnus gave to his wife in 1670 and now in the University Library of Amsterdam (see no 9 in Catalogue of an exhibition held in Amsterdam in 1997 for the International Association of Bibliophiles). Michiel van der Grijp was one of Albertus Magnusí best customers and a number of books with his monogram or coat of arms is known. A binding with both van der Grijpís coat of arms and his monogram is shown on page 78 of Roelof van Gelder and Jan van der Waals, Een wereldreiziger op papier. In 1660 he married Anna Haze, whose father was extremely wealthy. In June 1668 Kaiser Leopold I bestowed a noble rank on him as Michiel Ludovicus van Bergen, Lord Van der Grijp. Since Van der Grijp ordered sumptuous bindings from Magnus for both a printed edition and a sixteenth-century manuscript of the Amsterdam charters and statutes, we can conclude that he had his eyes on a career as an Amsterdam regent. In 1677 we find him in Hoorn where he remarried. Was that the end of his aspirations in Amsterdam? In 1679 he faced financial problems. A list of his creditors drawn up at that time included Albertus Magnus, whom he owed 425 guilders plus 10 guilders in surchargeí (exhibition catalogue 1997, p 32). The colouring of the Cruydt-Boeck is outstanding, using body and water colours and could be by Dirck Janz van Santen, ìthe most famous illuminator of his timeî (exhibition catalogue p 29), who illustrated several works bound by Magnus. As Van Santen did not sign his work this can only be a supposition. This is the last and most augmented edition of this monumental Dutch herbal, with additions by Joost van Ravelingen. Dodoens (1517-1585), Flemish physician and botanist, was one of the three great Flemish botanists in the second half of the sixteenth century, the others being lí…cluse and Lobel. The first edition of the present herbal was published in Antwerp by Jan van der Loe in 1554. Dodoens graduated from the University of Louvain in 1535. After working in Malines as a physician he moved to Vienna to assume the post of personal physician to Emperor Maximilian II, and later moved to Prague when Rudolf II succeeded Maximilian. In 1582 Dodoens was appointed professor of botany at the University of Leiden. The Cruydt-Boeck has been the most important and popular herbal in the Dutch language. This edition includes an appendix of New World plants. See Marja Keyser, Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Amsterdam University Library 1997; Catalogue of the Exhibition on the occasion of the First International Antiquarian Book Fair 1965; Miriam Foot, Studies in the history of bookbinding; H. de la Fontaine Verwey, Uit de wereld van het boek II pp 148-169 ëDe binder Albertus Magnus en de verzamelaars van zijn tijdí. This chapter deals at great length with Albertus Magnus and Michiel van der Grijp. Meerbeeck 11; Nissen BBI 518; Stafleu and Cowan 1492

A foundation text for kinesics and a pathbreaking work in the study of body language, gesture, sign language, rhetoric, and deafness. An early English proponent of Baconian natural philosophy, Bulwer argued here in his first two published works that gesticulation was a natural human language, the rhetoric of which he discussed in the second book. Bulwer was the first to emphasize the use of gestures in public speaking and the first to illustrate such gestures with pictures.

Dzengseo, Nicola Di Cosmo
The Diary of a Manchu Soldier in Seventeenth-Century China
Routledge/Curzon. Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. The Manchu conquest of China inaugurated one of the most successful and long-living dynasties in Chinese history: the Qing (1644-1911). The wars fought by the Manchus to invade China and consolidate the power of the Qing imperial house spanned over many decades through most of the seventeenth century. This book provides the first Western translation of the diary of Dzengseo, a young Manchu officer, and recounts the events of the War of the Three Feudatories (1673-1682), fought mostly in south-western China and widely regarded as the most serious military challenge faced by the Manchus before the Taiping rebellion (1851-1864). The author's participation in the campaign provides the close-up, emotional perspective on what it meant to be in combat, while also providing a rare window into the overall organization of the Qing army, and new data in key areas of military history such as combat, armament, logistics, rank relations and military culture. The diary represents a fine and rare example of Manchu personal writing, and shows how critical the development of Manchu studies can be for our knowledge of China's early modern history.       per Marc'Antonio Mazantini, In Urbino 1644 - Diviso in 2 parti. Manca a Vinciana, Lozzi, Bocca, Platneriana.

(Catal. Vente bibl. du Ch. de Prye, n°170).
